The pore structure parameters of coal have an important influence on the exploration and development of coalbed methane. In this study, a series of pore structure parameters, including porosity, pore radius, pore throat radius, pore coordination number, pore throat ratio, and specific surface area, are identified, extracted, and calculated in the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of coal reservoir samples using algorithms and application programs in MATLAB. Constant rate-controlled mercury injection and low-temperature N2 adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the accuracy of the SEM image-based processing analysis results. Characterization results show that the distribution of pore radius in the target coal samples of different organic matters range from 15 nm to 500 μm with porosity of 1.87–8.31% and radius distribution of 12.7 nm to ~100 μm. A noise-reduction system was constructed to eliminate the optical noise of non-porous features and repair the space affected by binarization noise. It is suggested that the characterization processing in this study is suitable for coal or other organic-rich porous materials with porosity > 2% and pore radius > 15 nm.

The operating conditions of axial flow fans are closely related to the thermo-flow characteristics of the mechanical draft direct dry cooling system. Moreover, the uneven distribution of cooling air driven by axial flow fans may lead to the deterioration of the heat transfer capacity of air-cooled condensers (ACCs). Therefore, developing energy-saving operating methods for axial flow fans is very meaningful. In this work, two kinds of adjustment strategies to make the flow field more uniform are proposed for a 2 × 300 MW direct dry cooling power-generating unit. The performance of ACCs in the prevailing wind direction is predicted with the help of the macro heat exchanger model. It is found that the inlet air temperatures of fans are significantly reduced by proposed strategies, especially at high wind speeds. Moreover, the minimum cooling air can meet the cooling demand of ACCs for the strategy which made the air flow rates of all fans consistent. Compared with the case without adjustment of fans, the total power consumption of the fan array was cut down effectively, up to 13.94% at the wind speed of 12 m/s. In conclusion, the energy efficiency of ACCs can be improved by the uniform flow field.

Axial flow fans play key roles in the thermo-flow performance of direct dry cooling system under windy conditions, so the energy efficiency of a power generating unit can be improved by optimizing the operation strategies of the axial flow fans. In this work, various measures based on the partition adjustment of axial flow fans with constant power consumption of a 2 × 660 MW power plant are studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The results show that increasing the rotational speed of the windward fans is beneficial to reduce the inlet air temperature and increase the mass flow rates of the fans, which enhance the heat rejections of the air-cooled condensers, especially at high wind speeds. Moreover, the turbine back pressures for the optimal and original cases are achieved by iterative methods, with the largest drop of 2.77 kPa at the wind speed of 12 m/s for 110-case 3 in the wind direction of −90°. It is recommended to adopt 110-case 1 and 110-case 3 at low and high wind speeds, respectively, in the wind directions of 90° and −90°, while 110-case 2 is always the best choice in the 0° wind direction.

The detailed characteristics and formation mechanisms of organic-rich clasts (ORCs) in the Upper Paleozoic tight sandstone in the northeastern margin of the Ordos Basin were analyzed through 818-m-long drilling cores and logging data from 28 wells. In general, compared with soft-sediment clasts documented in other sedimentary environments, organic-rich clasts in coal-bearing tight sandstone have not been adequately investigated in the literature. ORCs are widely developed in various sedimentary environments of coal-bearing sandstone, including fluvial channels, crevasse splays, tidal channels, sand flats, and subaqueous debris flow deposits. In addition to being controlled by the water flow energy and transportation processes, the fragmentation degree and morphology of ORCs are also related to their content of higher plants organic matter. The change in water flow energy during transportation makes the ORCs show obvious mechanical depositional differentiation. Four main types of ORC can be recognized in the deposits: diamictic organic-rich clasts, floating organic-rich clasts, loaded lamellar organic-rich clasts, and thin interlayer organic-rich clasts. The relationship between energy variation and ORCs deposition continuity is rarely studied so far. Based on the different handling processes under the control of water flow energy changes, we propose two ORCs formation mechanisms: the long-term altering of continuous water flow and the short-term water flow acting triggered by sudden events.

To investigate the effect of siliceous cementation on the densification of sandstone and the forming process of tight sandstone, based on cathodoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy and thin section analysis, the growth mechanism and characteristics of quartz particles in tight sandstone formations are explored. Meanwhile, combined with conventional core analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments, the factors affecting the crystallization of quartz particles, including the chlorite content, grain size and clay mineral, are analyzed, respectively. The entire siliceous cementation is divided into two processes. The first part is the process in which the weathered and rounded particles in the formation are restored to the hexagonal dipyramid crystal by siliceous cementation. The second part is the process of coaxial growth that the hexagonal dipyramid crystal continues to increase with the form of micro-quartz film. As siliceous cements continue to increase, the petrological characteristics of sandstones are constantly changing. The tight sandstone developed in the study area is composed of lithic sandstone and quartz lithic sandstone. Based on the analysis results, 2D and 3D evolution models are established for densification of two different lithic sandstones. When the content of siliceous cement in the study area is less than 17%, the porosity of tight sandstone increases with the increase of cement. When the content of cement is more than 17%, the porosity of tight sandstone is negatively correlated with the content of cement. When the cement content is greater than 10%, the reservoir permeability is negatively correlated with it. Furthermore, the particle size mainly affects the permeability of reservoir, and the particle size is negatively correlated with the permeability of tight sandstone. The most high-quality tight sandstone reservoir in the study area is in the first cementation stage when siliceous cements are distributed in porphyritic texture with the content of 10⁻15% and a grain size of 0.2⁻0.3 mm. In addition, the relatively high-quality reservoir is the one developing clay mineral film with a content of cementation about 5⁻12%.
