The increasing demand for wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for electric vehicles (EVs) has necessitated advancements in charging solutions, with a particular focus on speed and efficiency. However, power transfer efficiency is the major concern in static and dynamic wireless charging (DWC) design. Design consideration and improvements in all functional units are necessary for an increase in overall efficiency of the system. Recently, different research works have been presented regarding DWC at the power converter, coil structure and compensators. This paper provides a comprehensive review of power converters incorporating high-order compensation topologies, demonstrating their benefits in enhancing the DWC of EVs. The review also delves into the coupling coil structure and magnetic material architecture, pivotal in enhancing power transfer efficiency and capability. Moreover, the high-order compensation topologies used to effectively mitigate low-frequency ripple, improve voltage regulation, and facilitate a more compact and portable design are discussed. Furthermore, optimal coupling and different techniques to achieve maximum power transfer efficiency are discussed to boost magnetic interactions, thereby reducing power loss. Finally, this paper highlights the essential role of these components in developing efficient and reliable DWC systems for EVs, emphasizing their contribution to achieving high-power transfer efficiency and stability.

DC microgrids have become a prevalent topic in research in part due to the expected superior efficiency of DC/DC converters compared to their AC/DC counterparts. Although numer-ous side-by-side analyses have quantified the efficiency benefits of DC power distribution, these studies all modeled converter loss based on product data that varied in component quality and operating voltage. To establish a fair efficiency comparison, this work derives a formulaic loss model of a DC/DC and an AC/DC PFC boost converter. These converters are modeled with identical components and an equivalent input and output voltage. Simulated designs with real components show AC/DC boost converters between 100 W to 500 W having up to 2.5 times more loss than DC/DC boost converters. Although boost converters represent a fraction of electronics in build-ings, these loss models can eventually work toward establishing a comprehensive model-based full-building analysis.

Microgrids are designed to connect different types of AC and DC loads, which require robust power controllers to achieve an efficient power transfer. However, the effects of both AC and DC disturbances in the same type of controller make achieving stability a design challenge, especially in coupled systems where disturbances affect both the upstream and downstream in the microgrid. This paper presents an analysis of a second-order sliding-mode control (SOSMC) applied to a microgrid with direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) power converters. The aim is to simulate the second-order sliding-mode control with buck converters that feed constant DC–DC and DC–AC power loads. The controller was tested in consideration of a unique sliding surface facing external disturbances, such as variations in the frequency of AC converters, sudden changes in upstream voltages, and constant power loads (CPL). The influence of the gain values (K) on the controller was also analyzed. The results show that the controller is robust regarding its sensitivity to external disturbances and steady-state error. However, the importance of the constant “K” in the model states that there exist K-limit values where if “K” is too low, a slowdown is presented, and the response against disturbances can be critical, and if is too high, an overshoot is presented in the output voltage.

A three-phase multilevel inverter (MLI), synthesized with 31 levels in regard to its output voltage, is used to provide the AC supply to a three-phase, squirrel cage induction motor. The gating angles required for the 30 power switches on the MLI are optimized using both the genetic algorithm (GA) and the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), in which the optimal angles are determined through solving the trigonometric equations taken from Fourier analysis to target the minimum total harmonic distortion (THD) at the MLI output. A simulation model and an experimental prototype are developed for performance analysis and validation. The results demonstrate that the MLI is effectively able to produce 31 levels of three-phase AC output voltage, with the THD not exceeding 5% when loaded with a resistive load and a three-phase induction motor. The voltage and current are measured and recorded for different loads and operating conditions, including the amount of energy consumed by the load. The results of the frequency analysis demonstrate that most of the triple harmonics, which can harm the efficiency of the inverter, are cancelled.

This article introduces a single-phase five-level multilevel inverter based on six switches and two transformers. The proposed converter requires a single dc input source with low voltage. The disposition of switches makes it possible to build the converter with a transistors six-pack module off-the-shelves, traditionally used to build three-phase inverters, which simplifies the manufacturing process. The converter increases the voltage with two transformers; for that reason, it does not require an auxiliary step-up converter. The use of transformers (with the transformer’s turns ratio) allows for using the same topology for several input voltage levels. To verify the operation of the proposed multilevel inverter, a computer-based simulation was performed with PSIM, a software that considers parasitic components. The results show that the proposed converter can work properly.

This paper presents the study of air-core transformers for electric vehicles, developing them for medium-power (tens of kWs) converter applications specifically used at a high frequency. Air-core transformers have the advantage of lacking magnetic saturation and iron losses, making them suitable for high-frequency applications. We designed and manufactured a transformer for a determined frequency and inductance value. The design of this passive component aims to both keep the magnetic field inside the transformer and manage the thermal energy efficiently. The electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties are simulated and then verified by experiments with a specific test bench. The transformer reaches high performances for a higher frequency than usual for an equivalent power transfer in automotive applications.

To provide ancillary services in HVDC applications, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with integration of energy storage systems are a promising solution as they take advantage of the modularity and the controllability of the stored energy. In these solutions, an energy storage system is connected to the DC capacitor of a submodule (SM) to make an energy storage submodule (ES-SM). An MMC with partial integration (MMC-PIES) is an MMC with each arm made of a mix of SMs and ES-SMs. In this paper, we propose a novel design methodology for these converters considering they are built based on existing prebuilt submodules, while design methodologies in the literature consider the SM and ES-SM characteristics to be degrees of freedom. Therefore, the proposed approach is closer to an industrial standpoint and computes the minimum number of ES-SMs to comply with requirements. We also include a new optimization method for the circulating currents needed to balance the energy in the SM and ES-SM capacitors. Design scenarios are presented. The results show that the value of the DC capacitance and the current limitation of the switches highly influence the design, restricting the possible operating points. In addition, half-bridge ES-SMs seem to be a more promising solution than full-bridge ES-SMs, reducing the number of ES-SMs.

Increasing wind generation insertion levels on electrical grids through power converters may cause instabilities in the AC grid due to the intermittent wind nature. Integrating a Battery Electric Energy Storage System (BESS) in wind generation can smooth the power injection at the Common Coupling Point (PCC), contributing to the power system voltage and frequency stability. In this article, it is proposed to analyze the operation of a lithium-ion battery technology based 1 MW/1.29 MWh BESS connected in parallel with wind generation with a capacity of 50.4 MW. The main characteristics investigated are power smoothing and power factor correction. Experimental results show that BESS contributes to smoothing the active power and correcting the power factor of wind generation, improving the quality of electrical energy at the PCC.

The design of a fully superconducting wind power generator is influenced by several factors. Among them, a low number of pole pairs is desirable to achieve low AC losses in the superconducting stator winding, which greatly influences the cooling system design and, consecutively, the efficiency of the entire wind power plant. However, it has been identified that a low number of pole pairs in a superconducting generator tends to greatly increase its output voltage, which in turn creates challenging conditions for the necessary power electronic converter. This study highlights the interdependencies between the design of a fully superconducting 10 MW wind power generator and the corresponding design of its power electronic converter.

Due to environmental concerns, governments around the world are taking measures to decarbonise railway transport by replacing diesel traction systems with cleaner alternatives. While the electrification of railway systems is spreading rapidly, it is unlikely that all routes will be electrified as the volume of passengers will not justify the high infrastructure costs. Therefore, it is expected that, for several lines, a combination of hydrogen and electric traction will be used, with the latter partly provided by fixed infrastructure and partly by batteries. Railway traction drives will then need to change to accommodate these new types of power supply. A detailed review of the available traction motors and drives is provided with this review, given application to the new hybrid-electric systems. In particular, permanent magnet synchronous motors with multiphase windings are evaluated in comparison with traditional three-phase machines. Additionally, low and medium-voltage multisource power converters have been reviewed, taking into account the introduction of wide band-gap semiconductor devices.

The component count for the multilevel inverter has been a research topic for the last few decades. The higher number of power semiconductor devices and sources leads to a higher power loss with the complex control requirement. A new multilevel inverter topology employing the concept of half-Bridge modules is suggested in this paper. It requires a lower number of dc sources and power components. The inverter is controlled using a fundamental frequency switching scheme. With the basic unit being able to produce 13 level voltage waveforms with three dc voltage sources, higher-level inverter configuration has also been discussed in the paper. The performance of the topology is analyzed in the aspects of circuit parameters and found better when compared to similar topologies proposed in recent literature. The comparison provided in the paper set the benchmark of the proposed topology in terms of lower component requirements. The topology is also optimized with two voltage fixing algorithms for maximizing the number of levels for the given number of IGBTs, drivers and dc sources, and the observations are presented. The efficiency analysis gives the peak efficiency as 98.5%. The simulations were carried out using the PLECS software tool and validated using a prototype rated at 500 W. The results with several test conditions have been reported and discussed in the paper.

An accurate definition of a system model significantly affects the performance of model-based control strategies, for example, model predictive control (MPC). In this paper, a model-free predictive control strategy is presented to mitigate all ramifications of the model’s uncertainties and parameter mismatch between the plant and controller for the control of power electronic converters in applications such as microgrids. A specific recurrent neural network structure called state-space neural network (ssNN) is proposed as a model-free current predictive control for a three-phase power converter. In this approach, NN weights are updated through particle swarm optimization (PSO) for faster convergence. After the training process, the proposed ssNN-PSO combined with the predictive controller using a performance criterion overcomes parameter variations in the physical system. A comparison has been carried out between the conventional MPC and the proposed model-free predictive control in different scenarios. The simulation results of the proposed control scheme exhibit more robustness compared to the conventional finite-control-set MPC.

This paper investigates an energy-harvesting system that uses of vibration energy at a shock absorber for electric vehicles. This system mainly comprises a linear electromagnetic generator and synchronous buck converter. To obtain the electrical energy through a linear electromagnetic generator, the perturb and observe maximum power point tracking (P&O MPPT) scheme is applied at the converter. The power converter circuit is designed with a diode rectifier and synchronous buck converter. The generated electric power is able to transmit to the battery and the damping force of the shock absorber is adjusted by the controlled current of generator. The linear electromagnetic generator was designed as a single phase eight-slot eight-pole tubular permanent magnet machine. The performance of the proposed energy-harvesting system was verified through simulations and experiments.

The paper presents a power electronic conversion system and its control for a fuel cell and a battery-based hybrid drive system for a motor glider. The energy conversion system is designed in such a way that the fuel cell gives power equal to the electric drive power demand for horizontal flight, whereas during motor glider take-off and climbing, the fuel cell is supported by the battery. The paper presents the power demand related to the assumed mission profile, the main components of the hybrid drive system and its holistic structure, and details of power electronics control. Selected stationary experimental test results related to the energy conversion and drive system are shown. Some results related to the aircraft tests on a runway are presented.

With the introduction of the more electric aircraft, there is growing emphasis on improving overall efficiency and thus gravimetric and volumetric power density, as well as smart functionalities and safety of an aircraft. In future on-board power distribution networks, so-called high voltage DC (HVDC, typically +/−270VDC) supplies will be introduced to facilitate distribution and reduce the associated mass and volume, including harness. Future aircraft power distribution systems will also very likely include energy storage devices (probably, batteries) for emergency back up and engine starting. Correspondingly, novel DC-DC conversion solutions are required, which can interface the traditional low voltage (28 V) DC bus with the new 270 V one. Such solutions presently need to cater for a significant degree of flexibility in their power ratings, power transfer capability and number of inputs/outputs. Specifically, multi-port power-scalable bi-directional converters are required. This paper presents the design and testing of such a solution, addressing the use of leading edge wide-band-gap (WBG) solid state technology, especially silicon carbide (SiC), for use as high-frequency switches within the bi-directional converter on the high-voltage side.

Power quality is a pressing concern and of the utmost importance for advanced and high-tech equipment in particular, whose performance relies heavily on the supply’s quality. Power quality issues like voltage sags/swells, harmonics, interruptions, etc. are defined as any deviations in current, voltage, or frequency that result in end-use equipment damage or failure. Sensitive loads like medical equipment in hospitals and health clinics, schools, prisons, etc. malfunction for the outages and interruptions, thereby causing substantial economic losses. For enhancing power quality, custom power devices (CPDs) are recommended, among which the Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is considered as the best and cost-effective solution. DVR is a power electronic-based solution to mitigate and compensate voltage sags. This paper provides a thorough discussion and comprehensive review of DVR topologies based on operations, power converters, control methods, and applications. The review compares the state-of-the-art in works of literature, and comparative study on power quality issues, the DVR principle along with its operation modes, the DVR components, the DVR topologies based on energy storage, the DVR topologies based on single-/three-phase power converters, and the DVR topologies based on control units that have different control processing stages. Furthermore, modified and improved configurations of the DVR, as well as its integration with distributed generations, are described. This work serves as a comprehensive and useful reference for those who have an interest in researching DVRs.

If electric vehicles have to be truly sustainable, it is essential to charge them from sustainable sources of electricity, such as solar or wind energy. In this paper, the design of solar powered e-bike charging station that provides AC, DC and wireless charging of e-bikes is investigated. The charging station has integrated battery storage that enables for both grid-connected and off-grid operation. The DC charging uses the DC power from the photovoltaic panels directly for charging the e-bike battery without the use of an AC charging adapter. For the wireless charging, the e-bike can be charged through inductive power transfer via the bike kickstand (receiver) and a specially designed tile (transmitter) at the charging station, which provides maximum convenience to the user.

This paper proposes a computationally efficient and robust direct model predictive control (DMPC) technique with enhanced steady-state performance for power converters tied to the electric utility. The discrete space vector modulation (DSVM) method is considered in the design of the suggested DMPC, where virtual voltage vectors (VVs) besides the real ones are utilized for improving the steady-state response of the proposed controller. Furthermore, for averting the high computational burden and making the proposed control technique simple, a deadbeat (DB) function is employed for calculating the reference VV based on the required reference current. Subsequently, a discrete-time integral term is combined with this DB function to enhance the robustness of the suggested DMPC technique against variations of the model parameters. Finally, the best virtual or real VV is chosen by a certain quality function, which will be applied to the power converter in the next sample. The suggested technique is verified by simulation results and its performance is compared with the classical DMPC and voltage-oriented control (VOC).

Power density is one of the most significant issues in designing electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters for power electronic-based applications. Therefore, an effective EMI filter design should consider both its capability to ensure the compliance with the related EMI standard limits and the possibility to build it by suitable components leading to the most compact configuration as well. To fulfill the above requirements, in this paper, an automatic procedure to get an improved design of EMI filters is proposed. Specifically, according to the proposed method, the values of filter parameters for both common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) sections are selected by a genetic algorithm (GA) exploiting the in-circuit insertion loss, thus obtaining a more effective design. Besides, the components that set up the filter are selected by a rule-based procedure searching through a suitable database of commercial components to identify those allowing for the maximum power density. Experimental tests were performed using an inverter-fed induction motor drive as a case study, and the obtained results have demonstrated the validity of the proposed approach.

A phase-shift pulse-width modulation converter is studied and investigated for railway vehicle or solar cell power converter applications with wide voltage operation. For railway vehicle applications, input voltage range of dc converters is requested to have 30−40% voltage variation of the nominal input voltage. The nominal input voltages of dc converters on railway vehicles applications may be 37.5 V, 48 V, 72 V, 96 V and 110 V. Therefore, a new dc converter with wide input voltage operation from 25 to 150 V is presented to withstand different nominal input voltage levels such as 37.5−110 V on railway power units. To realize wide input voltage operation, an auxiliary switch and auxiliary transformer windings are used on output side of conventional full-bridge converter to have different voltage gains under different input voltage values. Phase-shift pulse-width modulation is adopted in the developed dc converter to accomplish soft switching operation on power switches. To confirm and validate the practicability of the presented converter, experiments based on a 300 W prototype were provided in this paper.

This paper compares the differences in economic feasibility and dynamic characteristics between underground (U/G) cable and overhead (O/H) line for low-voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution. Numerous low loaded long-distance distribution networks served by medium-voltage alternative current (MVAC) distribution lines exist in the Korean distribution network. This is an unavoidable choice to compensate voltage drop, therefore, excessive cost is expended for the amount of electrical power load. The Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is consequently seeking a solution to replace the MVAC distribution line with a LVDC distribution line, reducing costs and providing better quality direct current (DC) electricity. A LVDC distribution network can be installed with U/G cables or O/H lines. In this paper, a realistic MVAC distribution network in a mountainous area was selected as the target model to replace with LVDC. A 30 year net present value (NPV) analysis of the economic feasibility was conducted to compare the cost of the two types of distribution line. A simulation study compared the results of the DC line fault with the power system computer aided design/electro-magnetic transient direct current (PSCAD/EMTDC). The economic feasibility evaluation and simulation study results will be used to select the applicable type of LVDC distribution network.

This paper introduces a control algorithm for soft-switching series LC converters. The conventional voltage-to-voltage controller is split into a master and a slave controller. The master controller implements constant current, constant voltage (CCCV) control, required for demanding applications, for example, lithium battery charging or laboratory power supplies. It defines the set-current for the open-loop current slave controller, which generates the pulse width modulation (PWM) parameters. The power supply achieves fast large-signal responses, e.g., from 5 V to 24 V , where 95% of the target value is reached in less than 400 s . The design is evaluated extensively in simulation and on a prototype. A match between simulation and measurement is achieved.

Power converters are among the most frequently failing components of wind turbines. Despite their massive economic impact, the actual causes and mechanisms underlying these failures have remained in the dark for many years. In view of this situation, a large consortium of three research institutes and 16 companies, including wind-turbine and component manufacturers, operators and maintenance-service providers has joined forces to identify the main causes and driving factors of the power-converter failures in wind turbines to create a basis for effective remedial measures. The present paper summarizes and discusses the results of this research initiative, which have been achieved through the evaluation of converter-specific failure and operating data of a large and diverse worldwide wind-turbine fleet, field measurements as well as post-mortem investigation of returned converter components. A key conclusion of the work is that the thermal-cycling induced fatigue of bond-chip contacts and die-attach solder, which is a known issue in other fields of power-electronics applications and which has been widely assumed to be the principle damage mechanisms also in wind turbines, is no relevant contributor to the observed converter failures in this application. Instead, the results indicate that environmental factors such as humidity and contamination but also design and quality issues as well as human errors play an important part in the incidence of these failures.

A laboratory-scale passive hybrid power system for transportation applications is constructed and tested in this study. The hybrid power system consists of a fuel cell stack connected with a diode, a lithium-ion battery pack connected with a DC/DC power converter and another diode. The power converter is employed to regulate the output voltage of the battery pack. The dynamic responses of current and voltage of the stack to the start-up and acceleration of the load are experimentally investigated at two different selected output voltages of the DC/DC converter in the battery line. The power sharing of each power source and efficiency are also analyzed and discussed. Experimental results show that the battery can compensate for the shortage of supplied power for the load demand during the start-up and acceleration. The lowest operating voltage of the fuel cell stack is limited by the regulated output voltage of the DC/DC converter. The major power loss in the hybrid power system is attributed to the diodes. The power train efficiency can be improved by lowering the ratio of forward voltage drop of the diode to the operating voltage of the fuel cell stack.

The list of photovoltaic (PV) applications grows longer every day with high consideration for system efficiency. For instance, in spite of many recent PV aircraft designs, aircraft propulsion was mainly reserved for nonelectric motors. Lately, the Solar Impulse flight across the world shows the possibilities of larger PV powered electric aircraft. In order to obtain this goal efficiency of flight, PV conversion, power converters and electric drives have to be maximized. These demands led to a 63.4 m wingspan. The purpose of this paper is to present that PV power could be used for improving the performance of fixed-wing radio-controlled aircrafts with smaller wingspans (1 m). In order to improve the performance of battery powered electric unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), a model without PV cells (commercial Li-ion battery powered UAV) was compared with UAV powered both from battery and PV modules. This work shows details about Boost DC/DC converter and PV system design for small size fixed-wing electric UAVs, investigating the possibility of the application of PV powered drones, as well. Theoretical findings involving efficiency improvements have been confirmed by measurements combining the improvements in electrical engineering, microcontroller application and aerodynamics.

Multiple power converters based on the droop controllers have been used widely in the microgrid (MG) system. However, owing to the different response time among several types of power converters such as grid-feeding and grid-forming converters, low frequency oscillation occurs with high overshoot in the transient state. This paper proposes a novel control strategy based on the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) for improving transient response of parallel power converters during large disturbance in the stand-alone microgrid. The proposed VSG control, which inherits the transient state characteristic of the synchronous generator, can provide inertia virtually to the system. The transient response of voltage and frequency is improved, while the total system inertia response is compensated. Thus, the system stability can be enhanced by using the proposed VSG control. Additionally, the small signal analysis of the conventional VSG controller and the proposed VSG controller are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed VSG controller. The derivation of frequency, which is used to evaluate the inertia support of the VSG controller to the MG system, is discussed. The simulation result demonstrates that the overshoot of the transient response can be reduced, and the system stability is improved when the proposed VSG controller is applied. The MG system based on the real-time simulator OP5600 (OPAL-RT Technologies, Montreal, QC, Canada) is carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed VSG controller.

To efficiently supply wide-range DC voltage from a pulse-width modulation (PWM) rectifier, this paper presents a single-phase, full-wave, diode-bridge, single-ended primary-inductor converter-type (SEPIC-type) power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifier in continuous conduction mode with a sliding surface-regulated current-mode PWM controller. According to the switched-mode operation of the rectifier, a fourth-order switch model of the SEPIC is derived. From the fourth-order model, a simplified state-averaged model which approximately describes the dynamic behaviors of both the output voltage and inductor current is proposed. Then, from the simplified state-averaged model, the sliding surface-regulated current-mode PWM controller for the SEPIC-type PFC rectifier is proposed. The sliding surface-regulated current-mode PWM controller comprises a sliding-mode voltage controller in outer loop for robust control of the output DC-voltage and a sliding-mode current controller in inner loop for phase-synchronized control of the inductor current. For experimental studies, implementation of the proposed control algorithm in a DSP controller and a laboratory prototype of the SEPIC-type rectifier with the DSP-based PWM controller were carried out. Experimental results from the DSP controller-applied SEPIC-type rectifier are illustrated to confirm the validity of the proposed controller for practical applications.

Although Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind turbines (WTs) mitigate gearbox impacts, they requires high reliability of generators and converters. Statistical analysis shows that the failure rate of direct-drive PMSG wind turbines’ generators and inverters are high. Intelligent fault diagnosis algorithms to detect inverters faults is a premise for the condition monitoring system aimed at improving wind turbines’ reliability and availability. The influences of random wind speed and diversified control strategies lead to challenges for developing intelligent fault diagnosis algorithms for converters. This paper studies open-circuit fault features of wind turbine converters in variable wind speed situations through systematic simulation and experiment. A new fault diagnosis algorithm named Wind Speed Based Normalized Current Trajectory is proposed and used to accurately detect and locate faulted IGBT in the circuit arms. It is compared to direct current monitoring and current vector trajectory pattern approaches. The results show that the proposed method has advantages in the accuracy of fault diagnosis and has superior anti-noise capability in variable wind speed situations. The impact of the control strategy is also identified. Experimental results demonstrate its applicability on practical WT condition monitoring system which is used to improve wind turbine reliability and reduce their maintenance cost.
