Load forecasting is a research hotspot in academia; in the context of new power systems, the prediction and determination of load reserve capacity is also important. In order to adapt to new forms of power systems, a day-ahead automatic generation control (AGC) reserve capacity demand prediction method based on the Fourier transform and the attention mechanism combined with a bidirectional long and short-term memory neural network model (Attention-BiLSTM) optimized by an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) is proposed. Firstly, based on the response time, Fourier transform is used to refine the distinction between various types of load reserve demand, and the power of the AGC reserve band is calculated using Parseval's theorem to obtain the reserve capacity demand sequence. The maximum mutual information coefficient method is used to explore the relevant influencing factors of the AGC reserve sequence concerning the data characteristics of the AGC reserve sequence. Then, the historical daily AGC reserve demand sequences with relevant features are input into the Attention-BiLSTM prediction model, and the improved whale algorithm is used to automatically find the optimal hyperparameters to obtain better prediction results. Finally, the arithmetic simulation results show that the model proposed in this paper has the best prediction performance with the upper (0.8810) and lower (0.6651) bounds of the coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) higher than the other models, and it has the smallest mean absolute percentage error ( M A P E ) and root mean square error ( R M S E ). The pursuit of achieving total power network observability in smart grids using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) carries a significant promise of real-time Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control (WAMPAC). PMU applications eliminate periodical measurements, thereby increasing accuracy through a high sampling rate of the measured power systems quantities. The high costs of installation of PMUs for total power system observability presents a challenge in the implementation of PMUs. This is due to the expensive costs of PMU devices. This has led to a prominent optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem that researchers tirelessly aim to solve by ensuring a complete power network observability while using the least installed PMU devices possible. In this paper, a novel Binary Firefly Algorithm (BFA) based on the node degree centrality scores of each bus is proposed to minimize PMU installations. The BFA solves the OPP problem in consideration of the effect of Zero Injection Buses (ZIBs) under normal operation and single PMU outage (SPO). The robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE-approved test systems and visualized with a force-directed technique on an undirected power network graph. The proposed BFA yields the same but better optimal PMU numbers, obtained by existing meta-heuristic optimization techniques found in the literature for each of the IEEE test cases, as well as highlighting the cost–benefit of having a robust system against single PMU loss while considering the ZIB effect for an improved system measurement availability. Accurate and effective wind power prediction plays an important role in wind power generation, distribution, and management. Inthis paper, a hybrid algorithm based on gradient descent and meta-heuristic optimization is designed to improve the accuracy of prediction and reduce the computational burden. The hybrid algorithm includes three steps: in the first step, we use the gradient descent algorithm to get the initial parameters. Secondly, we input the initial parameters into the meta-heuristic optimization algorithm to search for the "best parameters" (high-quality inferior solutions). Finally, we input optimized parameters into the RMSProp optimization algorithm and conduct gradient descent again to find a better solution. We used 2021 wind power data from Guangxi, China for the experiment. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants are known as efficient technologies to reduce environmental emissions, balance energy costs, and increase total energy efficiency. To obtain a more efficient system, various optimization methods have been employed, based on numerical, experimental, parametric, and algorithmic optimization routes. Due to the significance of algorithmic optimization, as a systematic method for optimizing energy systems, this novel review paper is focused on the meta-heuristic optimization algorithms, implemented in CHP energy systems. By considering the applied objective functions, the main sections are divided into single-objective and multi-objective algorithms. In each case, the units' combination is briefly detailed, the objective functions are introduced, and analyses are conducted. The main aim of this paper is to gather a database for the optimization of CHPs, demonstrate the effect of the applied optimization methods on the objective functions, and finally, introduce the most efficient methods. The most significant feature of this paper is that it covers all types of CHP optimization issues including scheduling, sizing, and designing problems, finding the extent of each optimization issue in the relevant papers in the last decade. Based on the findings, in the single-objective problems the combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) issue as a subcategory of the scheduling problems is introduced as the most paid topic; the designing issue is known as the lowest paid topic. In the multi-objective problems, working on various types of CHP optimization problems has been conducted with an almost similar share. The combined heat and power economic emission dispatch (CHPEED) problem with the most share, and the sizing issue with the lowest share. The CHP designing and sizing optimization issues could be introduced as topics to work on more in the future. This scientific paper aims to increase the voltage source converter (VSC) control efficiency in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) network during dynamic operations. In the proposed study, the Mayfly algorithm (MA) is used to modify the control parameters of VSC stations. Traditional strategies that modify VSC control settings using approximate linear models fail to produce optimal results because VSCs are nonlinear characteristics of the MTDC system. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) may produce optimal outcomes, but it is prone to becoming stuck in a local optimum. To modify the proportional-integral (P.I.) control parameters of the VSC station, the Mayfly algorithm, a modified form of PSO, is used. The suggested algorithm's objective function simultaneously optimizes both the outer and inner control layers. A four-terminal MTDC test system is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC to assess the benefits of the proposed algorithm. For VSCs, a comparison of classical, PSO, and proposed MA-based tuned parameters is carried out. The integral of time multiplied by absolute error (ITAE) criterion is used to compare the performance of classical, PSO, and a proposed algorithm for VSC controller parameters/gains. With an ITAE value of 6.8521 × 10−6, the MA-based proposed algorithm computes the optimal values and outperforms its predecessor to adjust the VSCs controller gains. For (i) wind farm power variation, (ii) AC grid load demand variation, and (iii) ultimate permanent VSC disconnection, steady-state and dynamic performances are evaluated. The optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem represents a fundamental concern in the efficient and reliable operation of power systems, based on the proper coordination of numerous devices. Therefore, the ORPD calculation is an elaborate nonlinear optimization problem that requires highly performing computational algorithms to identify the optimal solution. In this paper, the potential of metaheuristic methods is explored for solving complex optimization problems specific to power systems. In this regard, an improved salp swarm algorithm is proposed to solve the ORPD problem for the IEEE-14 and IEEE-30 bus systems, by approaching the reactive power planning as both a single- and a multi- objective problem and aiming at minimizing the real power losses and the bus voltage deviations. Multiple comparison studies are conducted based on the obtained results to assess the proposed approach performance with respect to other state-of-the-art techniques. In recent years, with the growing popularity of smart microgrids in distribution networks, the effective coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) has presented a significant challenge for power system operators due to the intricate and nonlinear nature of their optimization model. Hence, this study proposes a hybrid GA-SQP algorithm to enhance the coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) in radial and non-radial interconnected distributed power networks. The proposed approach combines the advantages of both the genetic algorithm (GA) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) methods to optimize the objective function of relay coordination in the best manner. Thus, the proposed hybrid techniques improved the convergence of the problem and increased the likelihood of obtaining a globally optimal solution. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, it was tested through three case studies involving the IEEE 3-Bus, 8-Bus, and modified 30-Bus distribution networks. In addition, the results were compared to those obtained using previous methods. The results obtained from the comparison of the proposed method and recent advanced research indicate that the proposed optimization approach is preeminent in terms of accuracy and total operating time as well as the continuity of the minimum margin time requirements between the primary/backup relay pairs. This paper introduces a novel metaheuristic approach of sooty terns optimization algorithm (STOA) to determine the optimum parameters of model predictive control (MPC)-based deregulated load frequency control (LFC). The system structure consists of three interconnected plants with nonlinear multisources comprising wind turbine, photovoltaic model with maximum power point tracker, and superconducting magnetic energy storage under deregulated environment. The proposed objective function is the integral time absolute error (ITAE) of the deviations in frequencies and powers in tie-lines. The analysis aims at determining the optimum parameters of MPC via STOA such that ITAE is minimized. Moreover, the proposed STOA-MPC is examined under variation of the system parameters and random load disturbance. The time responses and performance specifications of the proposed STOA-MPC are compared to those obtained with MPC optimized via differential evolution, intelligent water drops algorithm, stain bower braid algorithm, and firefly algorithm. Furthermore, a practical case study of interconnected system comprising the Kuraymat solar thermal power station is analyzed based on actual recorded solar radiation. Transmission expansion planning (TEP), the determination of new transmission lines to be added to an existing power network, is a key element in power system planning. Using classical optimization to define the most suitable reinforcements is the most desirable alternative. However, the extent of the under-study problems is growing, because of the uncertainties introduced by renewable generation or electric vehicles (EVs) and the larger sizes under consideration given the trends for higher renewable shares and stronger market integration. This means that classical optimization, even using efficient techniques, such as stochastic decomposition, can have issues when solving large-sized problems. This is compounded by the fact that, in many cases, it is necessary to solve a large number of instances of a problem in order to incorporate further considerations. Thus, it can be interesting to resort to metaheuristics, which can offer quick solutions at the expense of an optimality guarantee. Metaheuristics can even be combined with classical optimization to try to extract the best of both worlds. There is a vast literature that tests individual metaheuristics on specific case studies, but wide comparisons are missing. In this paper, a genetic algorithm (GA), orthogonal crossover based differential evolution (OXDE), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), moth–flame optimization (MFO), exchange market algorithm (EMA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA) optimization and imperialistic competitive algorithm (ICA) are tested and compared. The algorithms are applied to the standard test systems of IEEE 24, and 118 buses. In the last few years, the integration of renewable distributed generation (RDG) in the electrical distribution network (EDN) has become a favorable solution that guarantees and keeps a satisfying balance between electrical production and consumption of energy. In this work, various metaheuristic algorithms were implemented to perform the validation of their efficiency in delivering the optimal allocation of both RDGs based on multiple photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) and wind turbine distributed generation (WTDG) to the EDN while considering the uncertainties of their electrical energy output as well as the load demand's variation during all the year's seasons. The convergence characteristics and the results reveal that the marine predator algorithm was effectively the quickest and best technique to attain the best solutions after a small number of iterations compared to the rest of the utilized algorithms, including particle swarm optimization, the whale optimization algorithm, moth flame optimizer algorithms, and the slime mold algorithm. Meanwhile, as an example, the marine predator algorithm minimized the seasonal active losses down to 56.56% and 56.09% for both applied networks of IEEE 33 and 69-bus, respectively. To reach those results, a multi-objective function (MOF) was developed to simultaneously minimize the technical indices of the total active power loss index (APLI) and reactive power loss index (RPLI), voltage deviation index (VDI), operating time index (OTI), and coordination time interval index (CTII) of overcurrent relay in the test system EDNs, in order to approach the practical case, in which there are too many parameters to be optimized, considering different constraints, during the uncertain time and variable data of load and energy production. Large-scale grids have gradually become the dominant trend in power systems, which has increased the importance of solving the challenges associated with large-scale economic dispatch (LED). An increase in the number of decision variables enlarges the search-space scale in LED. In addition to increasing the difficulty of solving algorithms, huge amounts of computing resources are consumed. To overcome this problem, we proposed a surrogate-assisted adaptive bat algorithm (GARCBA). On the one hand, to reduce the execution time of LED problems, we proposed a generalized regression neural network surrogate model based on a self-adaptive "minimizing the predictor" sampling strategy, which replaces the original fuel cost functions with a shorter computing time. On the other hand, we also proposed an improved hybrid bat algorithm (RCBA) named GARCBA to execute LED optimization problems. Specifically, we developed an evolutionary state evaluation (ESE) method to increase the performance of the original RCBA. Moreover, we introduced the ESE to analyze the population distribution, fitness, and effective radius of the random black hole in the original RCBA. We achieved a substantial improvement in computational time, accuracy, and convergence when using the GARCBA to solve LED problems, and we demonstrated this method's effectiveness with three sets of simulations. This article presents a new method based on meta-heuristic algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in photovoltaic systems. In this new method, the SALP Swarm Algorithm (SSA) is used instead of classic methods such as the Perturb and Observe (P&O) method. In this method, the value of the duty cycle is optimally determined in an optimization problem by SSA in order to track the maximum power. The objective function in this problem is maximizing the output power of the photovoltaic system. The proposed method has been applied on a photovoltaic system connected to the load, taking into account the effect of partial shade and different atmospheric conditions. The SSA method is compared with the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm and P&O methods. Additionally, we evaluated the effect of changes in temperature and radiation on solving the problem. The results of the simulation in the MATLAB/Simulink environment show the optimal performance of the proposed method in tracking the maximum power in different atmospheric conditions compared to other methods. Hand-in-hand with the smart-grid paradigm development, power converters used in high-power applications are facing important challenges related to efficiency and power quality. To overcome these issues, the pre-programmed Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) methods have been extensively applied to reduce the harmonic distortion with very low power switching losses for high-power converters. Among the pre-programmed PWM techniques, Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) has been the prevailing solution, but recently, Selective Harmonic Mitigation (SHM) stands as a superior alternative to provide further control of the harmonic spectrum with similar losses. However, the large computational burden required by the SHM method to find a solution confines it as an off-line application, where the switching set valid solutions are pre-computed and stored in a memory. In this paper, for the first time, a real-time implementation of SHM using an off-the-shelf mid-range microcontroller is presented and tested. The Exchange Market Algorithm (EMA), initially focused on optimizing financial transactions, is considered and executed to achieve the SHM targets. The performance of the EMA-based SHM is presented showing experimental results considering a reduced number of switching angles applied to a specific three-level converter, but the method can be extrapolated to any other three-level converter topology. Photovoltaic (PV) arrays are gaining popularity for electricity generation due to their simple and green energy production. However, the power transfer efficiency of PV varies depending on the load's electrical properties, the PV panels' temperature, and the insolation conditions. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is a method formulated as an optimization problem that adjusts the PV output voltage to deliver maximum power to the load based on these criteria (maximum power in the P-V curve). MPPT is a convex optimization problem when the Sun's rays completely cover the PV surface (full insolation). Several power points are formed in the Power vs. Voltage (P-V) curve, rendering MPPT as a non-convex problem during incomplete insolation (partial shadowing) on the PV surface due to barriers such as passing clouds or trees in the path of the Sun and the PV's surface. Unfortunately, mathematical programming techniques, such as gradient ascent and momentum, are not good optimization candidate algorithms because they cannot distinguish between the local and global maximum of a function (the case of non-convex problems). On the other hand, metaheuristic algorithms have better search space exploration capability, making it easier to discern the P-V curve's local and global power peaks. However, due to their pseudorandom search space exploration (random with some intuition), there is plenty of room for improving their performance. In this work, we elaborate on the Advanced Limited Search Strategy (ALSS), a technique we proposed in one of our previous works on MPPT. We prove its universal usefulness by applying it to other MPPT algorithms to enhance their performance. The ALSS first finds the direction where it is most probable to discover the MPP using the finite difference between two candidate duty cycles and then computes a duty cycle between two bounds designated by the previous direction. After that, the resulting duty cycle is further updated according to the metaheuristic update equation. The research proposes a new oppositional sine cosine muted differential evolution algorithm (O-SCMDEA) for the optimal allocation of distributed generators (OADG) in active power distribution networks. The suggested approach employs a hybridization of the classic differential evolution algorithm and the sine cosine algorithm in order to incorporate the exploitation and exploration capabilities of the differential evolution algorithm and the sine cosine algorithm, respectively. Further, the convergence speed of the proposed algorithm is accelerated through the judicious application of opposition-based learning. The OADG is solved by considering three separate mono-objectives (real power loss minimization, voltage deviation improvement and maximization of the voltage stability index) and a multi-objective framework combining the above three. OADG is also addressed for DGs operating at the unity power factor and lagging power factor while meeting the pragmatic operational requirements of the system. The suggested algorithm for multiple DG allocation is evaluated using a small test distribution network (33 bus) and two bigger test distribution networks (118 bus and 136 bus). The results are also compared to recent state-of-the-art metaheuristic techniques, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed method for solving OADG, particularly for large-scale distribution networks. Statistical analysis is also performed to showcase the genuineness and robustness of the obtained results. This paper proposes the application of a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the social behavior of chimps in nature, called Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA), for the maximum power point tracking of solar photovoltaic (PV) strings. In this algorithm, the chimps hunting process is mathematically articulated, and new mechanisms are designed to perform the exploration and exploitation. To evaluate the ChOA, it is applied to some fixed dimension benchmark functions and engineering problem application of tracking maximum power from solar PV systems under partial shading conditions. Partial shading condition is a common problem that appears in the solar PV modules installed in domestic areas. This shading alters the power developed by the solar PV panel, and exhibits multiple peaks on the power variation with voltage (P-V) characteristic curve. The dynamics of the solar PV system have been considered, and the mathematical model of a single objective function has been framed for tuning the optimal control parameter with the suggested algorithm. Implementing various practical shading patterns of solar PV systems with the ChOA algorithm has shown improved solar power point tracking performance compared to other algorithms in the literature. This work deals with metaheuristic optimization algorithms to derive the best parameters for the Gaussian Adaptive PID controller. This controller represents a multimodal problem, where several distinct solutions can achieve similar best performances, and metaheuristics optimization algorithms can behave differently during the optimization process. Finding the correct proportionality between the parameters is an arduous task that often does not have an algebraic solution. The Gaussian functions of each control action have three parameters, resulting in a total of nine parameters to be defined. In this work, we investigate three bio-inspired optimization methods dealing with this problem: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The computational results considering the Buck converter with a resistive and a nonlinear load as a case study demonstrated that the methods were capable of solving the task. In response to climate change and environmental issues, many countries have gradually optimized carbon market management and improved the carbon market trading mechanism. Carbon price prediction plays a pivotal role in promoting carbon market management when investors are guided by prediction to conduct rational carbon trading. A novel carbon price prediction methodology is constructed based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition, improved bat algorithm, and extreme learning machine (EEMD-IBA-ELM) in this study. Firstly, the carbon price is decomposed into multiple regular intrinsic mode function (IMF) components by the ensemble empirical mode decomposition, and partial autocorrelation analysis (PACF) is used to find IMF historical data affecting the current value of IMF. Secondly, the improved bat algorithm (IBA) is used to heighten extreme learning machine (ELM) while adaptive parameters are obtained. Finally, EEMD-IBA-ELM was established to predict carbon price. Simultaneously, energy price fluctuation is introduced into the carbon price prediction model. As a consequence, EEMD-IBA-ELM carbon price prediction ability is further improved. In the empirical analysis, the historical carbon price of European Climate Exchange (ECX) and Korea Exchange (KRX) markets are used to examine the effectiveness and stability of the model. Errors of carbon price prediction in ECX and KRX is 2.1982% and 1.1762%, respectively. The results show that the EEMD-IBA-ELM carbon price prediction model can accurately predict carbon price when prediction effect shows strong stability. Furthermore, carbon price prediction accurateness was significantly enhanced by using energy price fluctuation as an influencing factor of carbon price prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microgrids have been popularized in the past decade because of their ability to add distributed generation into the classic distribution systems. Protection problems are among several other problems that need solutions in order to extract the full capability of these novel networks. This research follows the branches of two major solutions, namely adaptive protection and protection optimization. Adaptive protection implementation with a novel concept of clustering is considered, and protection setting optimization is done using a novel hybrid nature-inspired algorithm. Adaptive protection is utilized to cope with the topology variations, while optimization techniques are used to calculate the protection settings that provide faster fault clearances in coordination with backup protection. A modified IEEE 14 bus system is used as the test system. Validation was done for the fault clearing performance. The selected algorithm was effective than most other algorithms, and the clustering approach for adaptive overcurrent protection was able to reduce the number of relays' setting groups.
