Forecasting has extreme importance in industry due to the numerous competitive advantages that it provides, allowing to foresee what might happen and adjust management decisions accordingly. Industries increasingly use sensors, which allow for large-scale data collection. Big datasets enable training, testing and application of complex predictive algorithms based on machine learning models. The present paper focuses on predicting values from sensors installed on a pulp paper press, using data collected over three years. The variables analyzed are electric current, pressure, temperature, torque, oil level and velocity. The results of XGBoost and artificial neural networks, with different feature vectors, are compared. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. Electricity consumption in buildings is one of the major causes of energy usage and knowledge of this can help building owners and users increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. For Pacific Island countries, building electricity demand data is not readily accessible or available for constructing models to predict electricity demand. This paper starts to fill this gap by studying the case of schools in Fiji. The aim of the paper is to assess the factors affecting electricity demand for grid-connected Fijian schools and use this assessment to build mathematical models (multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN)) to predict electricity consumption. The average grid-connected electricity demand in kWh/year was 1411 for early childhood education schools, 5403 for primary schools, and 23,895 for secondary schools. For predicting electricity demand (ED) for all grid-connected schools, the stepwise MLR model shows that taking logarithm transformations on both the dependent variable and independent variables (number of students, lights, and air conditioning systems) yields statistically significant independent variables with an R2 value of 73.3% and RMSE of 0.2248. To improve the predicting performance, ANN models were constructed on both the natural form of variables and transformed variables. The optimum ANN model had an R2 value of 95.3% and an RMSE of 59.4 kWh/year. The findings of this study can assist schools in putting measures in place to reduce their electricity demand, associated costs, and carbon footprint, as well as help government ministries make better-informed policies. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. This paper presents a model for determining the availability of continuous systems at open pits using the neuro-fuzzy system. The concept of availability is divided into partial indicators (synthetic indicators and sub-indicators). The presented model in relation to already existing models for determining availability uses a combination of the advantages of artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. The case study addressed the I ECC (bucket wheel excavator–conveyors–crushing plant) system of the open pit Drmno, Kostolac. In this paper, in addition to the ANFIS model for determining the availability of continuous systems, a simulation model was developed. The obtained results of the ANFIS model were verified with the help of a simulation model that uses certain assumptions about the distribution of failures. This paper was created as a result of several years of field and theoretical research into the availability of continuous systems in open pits, and completes a cycle that consists of several published articles on the subject of modeling the behavior of these systems in real time using a time picture of the state, expert assessment, simulation and AI models, while respecting the multidisciplinarity of the problem (mining technological, mechanical, and information technological aspects). The developed ANFIS model is a key instrument for improving operational efficiency and resource management in the mining sector. ANNs have become a cornerstone in efficiently managing building energy management systems (BEMSs) as they offer advanced capabilities for prediction, control, and optimization. This paper offers a detailed review of recent, significant research in this domain, highlighting the use of ANNs in optimizing key energy systems, such as HVAC systems, domestic water heating (DHW) systems, lighting systems (LSs), and renewable energy sources (RESs), which have been integrated into the building environment. After illustrating the conceptual background of the most common ANN architectures for controlling BEMSs, the current work dives deep into relative research applications, thereby exhibiting their methodology and outcomes. By summarizing the numerous impactful applications during 2015–2023, this paper categorizes the predominant ANN-based techniques according to their methodological approach, specific energy equipment, and experimental setups. Grounded in the different perspectives that the integrated studies illustrate, the primary focus of this paper is to evaluate the overall status of ANN-driven control in building energy management, as well as to offer a deep understanding of the prevailing trends at the building level. The life expectancy of power transformers is primarily determined by the integrity of the insulating oil and cellulose paper between the conductor turns, phases and phase to earth. During the course of their in-service lifetime, the solid insulating system of windings is contingent on long-standing ageing and decomposition. The decomposition of the cellulose paper insulation is strikingly grievous, as it reduces the tensile strength of the cellulose paper and can trigger premature failure. The latter can trigger premature failure, and to realize at which point during the operational life this may occur is a daunting task. Various methods of estimating the DP have been proposed in the literature; however, these methods yield different results, making it difficult to accurately estimate a reliable DP. In this work, a novel approach based on the Feedforward Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network has been proposed to predict the amount of DP in transformer cellulose insulation. Presently, no ANN model has been proposed to predict the remaining DP using 2FAL concentration. A databank comprising 100 data sets—70 for training and 30 for testing—is used to develop the proposed ANN using 2-furaldehyde (2FAL) as an input and DP as an output. The proposed model yields a correlation coefficient of 0.958 for training, 0.915 for validation, 0.996 for testing and an overall correlation of 0.958 for the model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles, energy storage power stations, and many other applications. Accurate and reliable monitoring of battery health status and remaining capacity is the key to establish a lithium-ion cell management system. In this paper, based on a Bayesian optimization algorithm, a deep neural network is structured to evaluate the whole charging curve of the battery using partial charging curve data as input. A 0.74 Ah battery is used for experiments, and the effect of different input data lengths is also investigated to check the high flexibility of the approach. The consequences show that using only 20 points of partial charging data as input, the whole charging profile of a cell can be exactly predicted with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of less than 19.16 mAh (2.59% of the nominal capacity of 0.74 Ah), and its mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is less than 1.84%. In addition, critical information including battery state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) can be extracted in this way to provide a basis for safe and long-lasting battery operation. Using multiple input power sources increases the reliability of electric vehicles compared to a single source. However, the inclusion of other sources exhibits complexity in the controller system, such as computing time, program difficulty, and switching speed to connect or disconnect the input power to load. To ensure optimal performance and avoid overloading issues, the EV system needs sophisticated control. This work introduces a machine-learning-based controller using an artificial neural network to solve these problems. This paper describes the detailed power management control methodology using multiple sources like solar PV, fuel cells, and batteries. Novel control with an instantaneous reference current scheme is used to manage the input power sources to satisfy the power demand of electric vehicles. The proposed work executes the power split-up operation with standard and actual drive cycles and maximum power point tracking for PV panels using MATLAB Simulink. Finally, power management with a machine learning technique is implemented in an experimental analysis with the LabVIEW software, and an FPGA controller is used to control a 48 V, 1 kW permanent-magnet synchronous machine. In order to improve the reliability and life of the wind turbine, this paper takes the rolling bearing in the experimental platform of the wind turbine as the research object. In order to obtain the intrinsic mode function (IMF) of each fault type, the original signals of different fault states of the rolling bearing on the experimental platform are decomposed by using the overall average empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD) and the wavelet packet decomposition method (WPD), respectively. Then the energy ratio of the IMF component of the different types of faults to the total energy value is calculated and the eigenvectors of different types of faults are constructed. The extreme learning machine (ELM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) are used to learn fault types and eigenvector samples to identify the faults of the rolling bearing. It is found that the bearing fault characteristics obtained by the WPD method are more obvious, and the results obtained by the same recognition method are ideal; and the PNN method is obviously superior to the extreme learning machine method in bearing fault recognition rate. Accurate quantification of uncertainty in solar photovoltaic (PV) generation forecasts is imperative for the efficient and reliable operation of the power grid. In this paper, a data-driven non-parametric probabilistic method based on the Naïve Bayes (NB) classification algorithm and Dempster–Shafer theory (DST) of evidence is proposed for day-ahead probabilistic PV power forecasting. This NB-DST method extends traditional deterministic solar PV forecasting methods by quantifying the uncertainty of their forecasts by estimating the cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of their forecast errors and forecast variables. The statistical performance of this method is compared with the analog ensemble method and the persistence ensemble method under three different weather conditions using real-world data. The study results reveal that the proposed NB-DST method coupled with an artificial neural network model outperforms the other methods in that its estimated CDFs have lower spread, higher reliability, and sharper probabilistic forecasts with better accuracy. Demand response management (DRM) plays a crucial role in the prospective development of smart grids. The precise estimation of electricity demand for individual houses is vital for optimizing the operation and planning of the power system. Accurate forecasting of the required components holds significance as it can substantially impact the final cost, mitigate risks, and support informed decision-making. In this paper, a forecasting approach employing neural networks for smart grid demand-side management is proposed. The study explores various enhanced artificial neural network (ANN) architectures for forecasting smart grid consumption. The performance of the ANN approach in predicting energy demands is evaluated through a comparison with three statistical models: a time series model, an auto-regressive model, and a hybrid model. Power quality improvement and Power quality disturbance (PQD) detection are two significant concerns that must be addressed to ensure an efficient power distribution within the utility grid. When the process to analyze PQD is migrated to real-time platforms, the possible occurrence of a phase mismatch can affect the algorithm's accuracy; this paper evaluates phase shifting as an additional stage in signal acquisition for detecting and classifying eight types of single power quality disturbances. According to their mathematical models, a set of disturbances was generated using an arbitrary waveform generator BK Precision 4064. The acquisition, detection, and classification stages were embedded into a BeagleBone Black. The detection stage was performed using multiresolution analysis. The feature vectors of the acquired signals were obtained from the combination of Shannon entropy and log-energy entropy. For classification purposes, four types of classifiers were trained: multilayer perceptron, K-nearest neighbors, probabilistic neural network, and decision tree. This paper presents a new approach for the online estimation of stator and rotor resistance of induction motors for speed sensorless vector-controlled drives, using feed-forward artificial neural networks with advanced adaptive learning rates. For the rotor resistance estimation, a neural network model based on rotor speed and stator currents is developed. The rotor flux linkages acquired from the voltage model are compared with the neural network model. The feed-forward neural network employs an adaptive learning rate as the function of the obtained error during training for quick convergence with minimal estimation error. A two-layered neural network model based on the stator voltage and current equations is developed for the stator resistance estimation. The d-q axes stator currents obtained from the developed model are compared with the acquired d-q axes stator currents. For the fast convergence with minimal estimation error, an adaptive learning rate as the function of error is adopted during training. Furthermore, the neural network estimates the induction motor's speed. The simulation and experimental results justify that the developed algorithms track variation in the resistances quickly and precisely along with the speed as compared with the conventional constant learning rate algorithm, leading to reliable operation of the drive. The investigation of the ignition delay of hydrocarbon fuel is highly valuable for enhancing combustion efficiency, optimizing fuel thermal efficiency, and mitigating pollutant emissions. This paper has developed a BP-MRPSO neural network model for studying hydrocarbon fuel ignition and clarified the novelty of this model compared to the traditional BP and ANN models from the literature. The model integrates the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with MapReduce-based parallel processing technology. This integration improves the prediction accuracy and processing efficiency of the model. Compared to the traditional BP model, the BP-MRPSO model can increase the average correlation coefficient, from 0.9745 to 0.9896. The R2 value for predicting fire characteristics using this model can exceed 90%. Meanwhile, when the two hidden layers of both the BP and BP-MRPSO models consist of 9 and 8 neurons, respectively, the accuracy of the BP-MRPSO model is increased by 38.89% compared to the BP model. This proved that the new BP-MRPSO model has the capacity to handle large datasets while achieving great precision and efficiency. The findings could provide a new perspective for examining the properties of fuel ignition, which is expected to contribute to the development and assessment of aviation fuel ignition characteristics in the future. Drying processes are among the most energy-intensive industrial processes. There is a need for development of the efficient methods needed for estimating, measuring, and reducing energy use. Different machine learning algorithms might provide some of the answers to these issues in a faster and less costly way, without the need for time-consuming and expensive experiments done at different scales of the dryers. The aim of this paper was to provide a comprehensive overview of machine learning applications for addressing energy-related challenges by exploration of different energy types and energy reduction opportunities. Also, the analysis of the applied algorithms, their specific applications and a critical evaluation of the obtained results are provided. The paper is based on the necessity of the improvements in energy use needed for drying related on the existing data. The overview of the ways for such achievements, and a general classification of machine learning algorithm are the background of the paper. The methods used are the machine learning techniques employed in different energy-related issues for drying processes. The paper focuses on the applications of artificial neural networks and other machine learning algorithms and models for different energy-related issues, including different energy types applications, challenges associated with energy consumption, and opportunities for energy reduction. Not only the applied algorithms, but also their specific applications, and the statistical analysis of the obtained results are also overviewed. Finally, a critical evaluation of the findings highlighting the potentials of machine learning algorithms in addressing energy-related challenges (such as estimation of energy consumption, opportunities for energy reduction, and use of different energy sources) is provided. Electrical drive systems are commonly applied for the mechanisms of precise movement, where having a high-quality position and high-quality speed control is especially valuable. Very often, the mechanical part of these systems reveals resonant properties that are related to the limited stiffness of the interconnection between subsequent parts of the mechanism. In most cases, this sort of system may be described as a model of several linked masses. If only the structure of the mechanical part is known and the corresponding parameters are constant and identified, the demanded control quality may be obtained using a properly tuned ADRC or PID controller equipped with appropriate anti-resonance filtration. However, if the parameters of the mechanical part are variant, adaptive control may be considered as a solution. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) is considered to be a speed controller and its training method assures adaptation to the unknown mechanical parameters. The paper is particularly focused on a three-mass system, which possesses, due to its structure, two resonant frequencies. The unique property of the analyzed system is the application of drive units at both ends of the system, so that the controller has the ability to influence the resonant system from both sides. The coordination of the drive unit is performed by the aforementioned ANN, from which two outputs affect the drive units independently. The derivation of the mathematical model is followed by its implementation in a computer simulation and finally the evaluation in a dedicated laboratory setup, the construction of which is also presented in the paper. With the rapid growth in the proportion of renewable energy access and the structural complexity of distributed energy systems, traditional microgrid (MG) scheduling methods that rely on mathematical optimization models and expert experience are facing significant challenges. Therefore, it is essential to present a novel scheduling technique with high intelligence and fast decision-making capacity to realize MGs' automatic operation and regulation. This paper proposes an optimal scheduling decision-making method for MGs based on deep neural networks (DNN). Firstly, a typical mathematical scheduling model used for MG operation is introduced, and the limitations of current methods are analyzed. Then, a two-stage optimal scheduling framework comprising day-ahead and intra-day stages is presented. The day-ahead part is solved by mixed integer linear programming (MILP), and the intra-day part uses a convolutional neural network (CNN)—bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi LSTM) for high-speed rolling decision making, with the outputs adjusted by a power correction balance algorithm. This paper presents a novel approach to estimating short-term production of wind farms, which are made up of numerous turbine generators. It harnesses the power of big data through a blend of data-driven and model-based methods. Specifically, it combines an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for immediate future predictions of wind turbine power output with a stochastic model for dependability, using Hybrid Reliability Block Diagrams. A thorough state-of-the-art review has been conducted in order to demonstrate the applicability of an ANN for non-linear stochastic problems of energy or power forecast estimation. The study leverages an innovative cluster analysis to group wind turbines and reduce the computational effort of the ANN, with a dependability model that improves the accuracy of the data-driven output estimation. Therefore, the main novelty is the employment of a hybrid model that combines an ANN with a dependability stochastic model that accounts for the realistic operational scenarios of wind turbines, including their susceptibility to random shutdowns This approach marks a significant advancement in the field, introducing a methodology which can aid the design and the power production forecast. The research has been applied to a case study of a 24 MW wind farm located in the south of Italy, characterized by 28 turbines. Optimal power flow (OPF) is a crucial tool in the operation and planning of modern power systems. However, as power system optimization shifts towards larger-scale frameworks, and with the growing integration of distributed generations, the computational time and memory requirements of solving the alternating current (AC) OPF problems can increase exponentially with system size, posing computational challenges. In recent years, machine learning (ML) has demonstrated notable advantages in efficient computation and has been extensively applied to tackle OPF challenges. This present review explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods in analysing the prediction of thermophysical properties of nanofluids. Nanofluids, colloidal solutions comprising nanoparticles dispersed in various base fluids, have received significant attention for their enhanced thermal properties and broad application in industries ranging from electronics cooling to renewable energy systems. In particular, nanofluids' complexity and non-linear behaviour necessitate advanced predictive models in heat transfer applications. The AI techniques, which include genetic algorithms (GAs) and machine learning (ML) methods, have emerged as powerful tools to address these challenges and offer novel alternatives to traditional mathematical and physical models. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and other AI algorithms are highlighted for their capacity to process large datasets and identify intricate patterns, thereby proving effective in predicting nanofluid thermophysical properties (e.g., thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity). This review paper presents a comprehensive overview of various published studies devoted to the thermal behaviour of nanofluids, where AI methods (like ANNs, support vector regression (SVR), and genetic algorithms) are employed to enhance the accuracy of predictions of their thermophysical properties. The reviewed works conclusively demonstrate the superiority of AI models over the classical approaches, emphasizing the role of AI in advancing research for nanofluids used in heat transfer applications. To reduce the energy consumption of domestic hot water (DHW) production, it is necessary to reasonably select a water supply plan through early predictions of DHW consumption to optimize energy consumption. However, the fluctuations and intermittence of DHW consumption bring great challenges to the prediction of water consumption. In this paper, an ANN-LSTM-A water quantity prediction model based on attention mechanism (AM) enhancement is improved. The model includes an input layer, an AM layer, a hidden layer, and an output layer. Based on the combination of artificial neural network (ANN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) models, an AM is incorporated to address the issue of the traditional ANN model having difficulty capturing the long-term dependencies, such as lags and trends in time series, to improve the accuracy of the DHW consumption prediction. Through comparative experiments, it was found that the root mean square error of the ANN-LSTM-A model was 15.4%, 13.2%, and 13.2% lower than those of the ANN, LSTM, and ANN-LSTM models, respectively. The corresponding mean absolute error was 17.9%, 11.5%, and 8% lower than those of the ANN, LSTM, and ANN-LSTM models, respectively. The results showed that the proposed ANN-LSTM-A model yielded better performances in predicting DHW consumption than the ANN, LSTM, and ANN-LSTM models. Insulation resistance (IR) is an essential metric indicating insulation conditions of extruded power cables. To deliver reliable IR simulation as a reference for practical cable inspection, in this paper, four IR degradation models for cross-linked polyethylene-insulated cables under thermal ageing are presented. In addition, the influences of methodologies and temperature profiles on IR simulation are evaluated. Cable cylindrical insulation is first divided into sufficiently small segments whose temperatures are simulated by jointly using a finite volume method and an artificial neural network to model the thermal ageing experiment conditions. The thermal degradation of IR is then simulated by dichotomy models that randomly sample fully degraded segments based on an overall insulation (layer) ageing condition estimation and discretization models that estimate the gradual degradation of individual segments, respectively. Furthermore, uniform and non-uniform temperature profiles are incorporated into dichotomy and discretization models, respectively, for a comparison. This paper designs a multi-variable hybrid islanding-detection method (HIDM) using signal-processing techniques. The signals of current captured on a test system where the renewable energy (RE) penetration level is between 50% and 100% are processed by the application of the Stockwell transform (ST) to compute the Stockwell islanding-detection factor (SIDF) and the co-variance islanding-detection factor (CIDF). The signals of current are processed by the application of the Hilbert transform (HT), and the Hilbert islanding-detection factor (HIDF) is computed. The signals of current are also processed by the application of the Alienation Coefficient (ALC), and the Alienation Islanding Detection Factor (AIDF) is computed. A hybrid islanding-detection indicator (HIDI) is derived by multiplying the SIDF, CIDF, AIDF, and an islanding weight factor (IWF) element by element. Two thresholds, designated as the hybrid islanding-detection indicator threshold (HIDIT) and the hybrid islanding-detection indicator fault threshold (HIDIFT), are selected to detect events of islanding and also to discriminate such events from fault events and operational events. The HIDM is effectively tested using an IEEE-13 bus power network, where solar generation plants (SGPs) and wind generation plants (WGPs) are integrated. The HIDM effectively identified and discriminated against events such as islanding, faults, and operational. The HIDM is also effective at identifying islanding events on a real-time distribution feeder. The HIDM is also effective at detecting islanding events in the scenario of a 20 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is established that the HIDM has a small non-detection zone (NDZ). The effectiveness of the HIDM is better relative to the islanding-detection method (IDM) supported by the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), an IDM using a hybridization of the slantlet transform, and the Ridgelet probabilistic neural network (RPNN). An IDM using wavelet transform multi-resolution (WT-MRA)-based image data and an IDM based on the use of a deep neural network (DNN) were used. Building automation systems installed in large commercial buildings record sub-hourly measurements from hundreds of sensors. The use of such large datasets are challenging because of missing and erroneous data, which can prevent the development of accurate prediction models of the performance of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment. The use of the transfer learning (TL) method for building applications attracted researchers to solve the problems created by small and incomplete datasets. This paper verifies the hypothesis that the deep neural network models that are pre-trained for one chiller (called the source chiller) with a small dataset of measurements from July 2013 could be applied successfully, by using TL strategies, for the prediction of the operation performance of another chiller (called the target chiller) with different datasets that were recorded during the cooling season of 2016. With the rapid growth of power demand and the advancement of new power system intelligence, smart energy measurement system data quality and security are also facing the influence of diversified factors. To solve the series of problems such as low data prediction efficiency, poor security perception, and "data islands" of the new power system, this paper proposes a federated learning system based on the Improved Hunter–Prey Optimizer Optimized Wavelet Neural Network (IHPO-WNN) for the whole-domain power load prediction. An improved HPO algorithm based on Sine chaotic mapping, dynamic boundaries, and a parallel search mechanism is first proposed to improve the prediction and generalization ability of wavelet neural network models. Further considering the data privacy in each station area and the potential threat of cyber-attacks, a localized differential privacy-based federated learning architecture for load prediction is designed by using the above IHPO-WNN as a base model. A fuel cell is an energy conversion device that utilizes hydrogen energy through an electrochemical reaction. Despite their many advantages, such as high efficiency, zero emissions, and fast startup, fuel cells have not yet been fully commercialized due to deficiencies in service life, cost, and performance. Efficient evaluation methods for performance and service life are critical for the design and optimization of fuel cells. The purpose of this paper was to review the application of common machine learning algorithms in fuel cells. The significance and status of machine learning applications in fuel cells are briefly described. Common machine learning algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, support vector machines, and random forests are introduced, and their applications in fuel cell performance prediction and optimization are comprehensively elaborated. The review revealed that machine learning algorithms can be successfully used for performance prediction, service life prediction, and fault diagnosis in fuel cells, with good accuracy in solving nonlinear problems. Combined with optimization algorithms, machine learning models can further carry out the optimization of design and operating parameters to achieve multiple optimization goals with good accuracy and efficiency. Short-term load forecasting (STLF) is critical for the energy industry. Accurate predictions of future electricity demand are necessary to ensure power systems' reliable and efficient operation. Various STLF models have been proposed in recent years, each with strengths and weaknesses. This paper comprehensively reviews some STLF models, including time series, artificial neural networks (ANNs), regression-based, and hybrid models. It first introduces the fundamental concepts and challenges of STLF, then discusses each model class's main features and assumptions. The paper compares the models in terms of their accuracy, robustness, computational efficiency, scalability, and adaptability and identifies each approach's advantages and limitations. Although this study suggests that ANNs and hybrid models may be the most promising ways to achieve accurate and reliable STLF, additional research is required to handle multiple input features, manage massive data sets, and adjust to shifting energy conditions. NOx is one of the main sources of pollutants for motor vehicles. Nowadays, many diesel vehicle manufacturers may use emission-cheating equipment to make the vehicles meet compliance standards during emission tests, but the emissions will exceed the standards during actual driving. In order to strengthen the supervision of diesel vehicles for emission monitoring, this article intends to establish a model that can predict the transient emission characteristics of heavy-duty diesel vehicles and provide a solution for remote online monitoring of diesel vehicles. This paper refers to the heavy-duty vehicle National VI emission regulations and uses vehicle-mounted portable emission testing equipment (PEMS) to conduct actual road emission tests on a certain country's VI heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Then, it proposes a new feature engineering processing method that uses gray correlation analysis and principal component analysis to eliminate invalid data and reduce the dimensionality of the aligned data, which facilitates the rapid convergence of the model during the training process. Then, a double-hidden-layer BP (Back propagation) neural network was established, and the improved gray wolf algorithm was used to optimize the threshold and weight of the neural network, and a heavy-duty diesel vehicle NOx emission prediction model was obtained. Through the training of the network, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the improved model on the test set between the predicted value and the true value is 1.9144 (mg/s), and the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.87024. Compared with single-hidden-layer network and double-hidden-layer BP neural network models, the accuracy of the model has been improved. This paper presents an approach to estimate demand in the Polish Power System (PPS) using the historical electricity usage of 27 thousand commercial customers, observed between 2016 and 2020. The customer data were clustered and samples as well as features were created to build neural network models. The goal of this research is to analyze if the clustering of customers can help to explain demand in the PPS. Additionally, considering that the datasets available for commercial customers are typically much smaller, it was analyzed what a minimal sample size drawn from the clusters would have to be in order to accurately estimate demand in the PPS. The evaluation and experiments were conducted for each year separately; the results proved that, considering adjusted R2 and mean absolute percentage error, our clustering-based method can deliver a high accuracy in the load estimation. Continual learning has recently become a primary paradigm for deep neural network models in modern artificial intelligence services, where streaming data patterns frequently and irregularly change over time in dynamic environments. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of studies on computing cluster management for the processing of continual learning tasks, particularly in terms of the timeliness of model updates and associated energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a novel timeliness-aware continual learning management (TA-CLM) system aimed at ensuring timely deep neural network model updates for continual learning tasks while minimizing the energy consumption of computing worker nodes in clusters. We introduce novel penalty cost functions to penalize quantitatively deep neural network model update latency and present the associated optimization formulation to ensure the best task allocation. Additionally, we design a simulated annealing-based optimizer, which is a meta-heuristic technique and easy to implement, to solve the non-convex and non-linear optimization problem. We demonstrate that the proposed TA-CLM system improves both latency and energy performance over its competitors by an average of 51.3% and 51.6%, respectively, based on experimental results using raw data from well-known deep neural network models on an NVIDIA GPU-based testbed and a large-scale simulation environment. Energy systems around the world are going through tremendous transformations, mainly driven by carbon footprint reductions and related policy imperatives and low-carbon technological development. These transformations pose unprecedented technical challenges to the energy sector, but they also bring opportunities for energy systems to develop, adapt, and evolve. With rising complexity and increased digitalization, there has been significant growth in the amount of data in the power/energy sector (data ranging from power grid to household levels). Utilization of this large data (or "big data"), along with the use of proper data analytics, will allow for useful insights to be drawn that will help energy systems to deliver an increased amount of technical, operational, economic, and environmental benefits. This paper reviews various categories of data available in the current and future energy systems and the potential benefits of utilizing those data categories in energy system planning and operation. This paper also discusses the Big Data Analytics (BDA) that can be used to process/analyze the data and extract useful information that can be integrated and used in energy systems. More specifically, this paper discusses typical applications of BDA in energy systems, including how BDA can be used to resolve the critical issues faced by the current and future energy network operations and how BDA contributes to the development of smarter and more flexible energy systems. In this paper, a set of best practice data sharing guidelines for wind turbine fault detection model evaluation is developed, which can help practitioners overcome the main challenges of digitalisation. Digitalisation is one of the key drivers for reducing costs and risks over the whole wind energy project life cycle. One of the largest challenges in successfully implementing digitalisation is the lack of data sharing and collaboration between organisations in the sector. In order to overcome this challenge, a new collaboration framework called WeDoWind was developed in recent work. The main innovation of this framework is the way it creates tangible incentives to motivate and empower different types of people from all over the world to share data and knowledge in practice. In this present paper, the challenges related to comparing and evaluating different SCADA-data-based wind turbine fault detection models are investigated by carrying out a new case study, the "WinJi Gearbox Fault Detection Challenge", based on the WeDoWind framework. A total of six new solutions were submitted to the challenge, and a comparison and evaluation of the results show that, in general, some of the approaches (Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithm for constructing health indicators, performance monitoring using Deep Neural Networks, Combined Ward Hierarchical Clustering and Novelty Detection with Local Outlier Factor and Time-to-failure prediction using Random Forest Regression) appear to exhibit high potential to reach the goals of the Challenge. However, there are a number of concrete things that would have to have been done by the Challenge providers and the Challenge moderators in order to ensure success. This includes enabling access to more details of the different failure types, access to multiple data sets from more wind turbines experiencing gearbox failure, provision of a model or rule relating fault detection times or a remaining useful lifetime to the estimated costs for repairs, replacements and inspections, provision of a clear strategy for training and test periods in advance, as well as provision of a pre-defined template or requirements for the results. This paper presents a model for determining fuzzy evaluations of partial indicators of the availability of continuous systems at coal open pits using a neuro-fuzzy inference system. The system itself is a combination of fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. The system availability is divided into partial indicators. By combining the fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks, a model is obtained that has the ability to learn and uses expert judgment for that learning. This paper deals with the ECC system (bucket wheel excavator-conveyor-crushing plant) of the open pit Drmno-Kostolac, which operates within the Electric Power Company of Serbia. The advantage of a model of this type is that it does not rely on the historical experiences of experts and usual predicted values for the fuzzy evaluation of partial indicators, which are based on the assumption that similar systems affect availability in a similar way. The fuzzy evaluation of partial indicators is based on historical data for the specific system for which the model was created. As such, it can more accurately predict continuous systems availability on the basis of expert evaluations in the appropriate time period. Another advantage of this model is that the availability is estimated on a quarterly basis, which gives a more accurate view because it uses a smaller time period with more similar characteristics and, thus, includes certain external influences which are related to the quarterly meteorological conditions. A chilled water system transports cooling functionality from refrigerators to users via heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This paper investigated an optimal control strategy to regulate the volume flow rate of each user branch in a chilled water system, considering the minimum resistance operation to reduce energy consumption. An artificial neural network (ANN) was adopted to establish the nonlinear relationship between the volume flow rate of each user branch, pump frequency, and valve opening of each user branch. An optimal control strategy for a chilled water HVAC system is proposed in this article, according to the pump-valve combined control (PVCC) principle and an ANN model, i.e., pump-valve combined control using an artificial neural network model (PVCC-ANN). A series of tests were conducted to collect data to train the ANN model and analyze the performance of the PVCC-ANN in an experimental chilled water system. The results show that the trained ANN model has good prediction performance. A minimum resistance operation can be achieved to control the volume flow rate of each user branch independently by using the PVCC-ANN model. Moreover, the proposed PVCC-ANN method shows good energy-saving performance in chilled water systems, which can be attributed to the minimum resistance operation. Taking the energy consumption of the pump's constant frequency operation as the reference, the energy saving rate using the PVCC-ANN is between 14.3% and 58.6% under 10 operating conditions, as reported in this paper. Increasing connection rates of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems to electricity distribution networks has become a major concern for the distribution network service providers (DNSPs) due to the inability of existing network infrastructure to accommodate high levels of PV penetration while maintaining voltage regulation and other operational requirements. The solution to this dilemma is to undertake a hosting capacity (HC) study to identify the maximum penetration limit of rooftop PV generation and take necessary actions to enhance the HC of the network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of two topics: HC assessment strategies and reinforcement learning (RL)-based coordinated voltage control schemes. In this paper, the RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes are identified as a means to enhance the HC of electricity distribution networks. RL-based algorithms have been widely used in many power system applications in recent years due to their precise, efficient and model-free decision-making capabilities. A large portion of this paper is dedicated to reviewing RL concepts and recently published literature on RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes. A non-exhaustive classification of RL algorithms for voltage control is presented and key RL parameters for the voltage control problem are identified. For equivalent modeling of mixed wind farms (WFs), existing clustering indicators cannot consider the complex coupling characteristics between different types of wind turbines (WTs). In this paper, a refined equivalent modeling approach based on artificial intelligence technology is proposed. Firstly, the electromechanical transient performance of mixed WFs is analyzed. The WT type, wind speed and direction, and voltage dip are considered the dominant factors affecting the external dynamic response of mixed WFs. Secondly, the equivalent node model is established, including the selection of independent and dependent variables. Then, the multiple artificial neural networks (ANNs) are trained one by one based on small sample data, to fit the nonlinear relationship between the dependent variables and the independent variables. Finally, the dynamic response of the power systems with a mixed WF is simulated in the MATLAB platform. A comparison of the errors in electromechanical phenomena demonstrates that the proposed model can reflect the external characteristics of the test mixed WF in different wind conditions and voltage dips. Confronted with the climate crisis, the world is making tremendous efforts in energy transition, such as expanding renewable energy that does not emit carbon. The importance of virtual power plant (VPP) operation technology has emerged to secure grid flexibility in response to the expanding renewable energy implemented due to these efforts. Accordingly, VPPs, which include photovoltaics, wind turbines, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), load, and EV, have been constructed. HVAC, one of the component resources, is a system that controls and regulates temperature, humidity, and airflow. Since it responds sensitively to the building's heat capacity and changes in the external environment, it requires continuous and stable control. In this paper, we used data-based modeling to implement the HVAC required for the optimal operation of VPP. Since accurately creating an equation-based HVAC model was difficult considering building information modeling and external environment variables, we used historical HVAC operation data to perform data-based modeling. The model was implemented using nonlinear regression and machine learning, such as a support vector machine and artificial neural network. Then, the data-based HVAC and the actual HVAC operation results were comparatively analyzed based on a case study, and the model's goodness-of-fit was evaluated based on performance metrics. This paper presents a methodology that allows for the detection of the state of a sheet-metal-forming press, the parts being produced, their cadence, and the energy demand for each unit produced. For this purpose, only electrical measurements are used. The proposed analysis is conducted at the level of the press subsystems: main motor, transfer module, cushion, and auxiliary systems, and is intended to count, classify, and monitor the production of pressed parts. The power data are collected every 20 ms and show cyclic behavior, which is the basis for the presented methodology. A neural network (NN) based on heuristic rules is developed to estimate the press states. Then, the production period is determined from the power data using a least squares method to obtain normalized harmonic coefficients. These are the basis for a second NN dedicated to identifying the parts in production. The global error in estimating the parts being produced is under 1%. The resulting information could be handy in determining relevant information regarding the press behavior, such as energy per part, which is necessary in order to evaluate the energy performance of the press under different production conditions. The automotive production sector plays a significant role in the energy consumption of all the industrial sphere, which currently represents approximately 38% of the total global energy use. Especially in production sites with several manufacturing lines working in parallel, the occurrence of failures and anomalies or sudden changes in the production volume may require a re-scheduling of the entire production process. In this regard, a digital twin of each phase of the process would give several indications about the new re-scheduled manufacture in terms of energy consumption and the control strategy to adopt. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to propose different modeling approaches to a degreasing tank process, which is a preliminary phase at automotive production sites before the application of paint to car bodies. In detail, two different approaches have been developed: the first is a physics-based thermodynamic approach, which relies on the mass and energy balances of the system analyzed, and the second is machine learning-based, with the calibration of several artificial neural networks (ANNs). All the investigated approaches were assessed and compared, and it was determined that, for this application and with the data at our disposal, the thermodynamic approach has better prediction accuracy, with an overall mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.30 °C. Moreover, the model can be used to optimize the heat source policy of the tank, for which it has demonstrated, with historical data, an energy saving potentiality of up to 30%, and to simulate future scenarios in which, due to company constraints, a re-scheduling of the production of more work shifts is required. Lithium-ion batteries are a key technology for the electrification of the transport sector and the corresponding move to renewable energy. It is vital to determine the condition of lithium-ion batteries at all times to optimize their operation. Because of the various loading conditions these batteries are subjected to and the complex structure of the electrochemical systems, it is not possible to directly measure their condition, including their state of charge. Instead, battery models are used to emulate their behavior. Data-driven models have become of increasing interest because they demonstrate high levels of accuracy with less development time; however, they are highly dependent on their database. To overcome this problem, in this paper, the use of a data augmentation method to improve the training of artificial neural networks is analyzed. A linear regression model, as well as a multilayer perceptron and a convolutional neural network, are trained with different amounts of artificial data to estimate the state of charge of a battery cell. All models are tested on real data to examine the applicability of the models in a real application. The lowest test error is obtained for the convolutional neural network, with a mean absolute error of 0.27%. Due to their substantial energy density and economical pricing, switching-mode power supplies (SMPSs) often utilize electrolytic capacitors. However, their ability to function at low temperatures is essential for dependable operation in several sectors, including telecommunications, automotive, and aerospace. This study includes an experimental evaluation of how well standard SMPS electrolytic capacitors operate at low temperatures. This paper investigates the suitability of standard electrolytic capacitors used in switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs) for low-temperature applications. The experimental evaluation exposed the capacitors to temperatures ranging from −5 °C to −40 °C, assessing capacitance (Cp), impedance (Z), dissipation factor (DF), and equivalent series resistance (ESR) at each temperature. The capacitor's time-domain electrical signals were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient to extract discriminative features. These features were input into an artificial neural network (ANN) for training and testing. The results indicated a significant impact of low temperatures on capacitor performance. Capacitance decreased with lower temperatures, while the ESR and leakage current increased, affecting stability and efficiency. Impedance was a valuable diagnostic tool for identifying potential capacitor failure, showing a 98.44% accuracy drop at −5 °C and 88.75% at the peak temperature, indicating proximity to the manufacturer's specified limit. The study suggests further research and development to improve the performance of electrolytic capacitors in SMPS systems under cold conditions, aiming to boost efficiency and reliability. Analyzing and investigating the impact of implementing an environmental policy mix on carbon emission from private cars and social welfare holds significant reference value. Firstly, based on vehicle trajectory big data, this paper employs reverse geocoding and artificial neural network models to predict carbon emissions from private cars in various provinces and cities in China. Secondly, by simulating different scenarios of carbon tax, carbon trading, and their policy mix, the propensity score matching model is constructed to explore the effects of the policy mix on carbon emission reduction from private cars and social welfare while conducting regional heterogeneity analysis. Finally, policy proposals are proposed to promote carbon emission reduction from private cars and enhance social welfare in China. The results indicate that the environmental policy mix has a significant positive impact on carbon emission reduction from private cars and social welfare. Furthermore, in the regional heterogeneity analysis, the implementation of the policy mix in eastern regions has a significant positive effect on both carbon emission reduction from private cars and social welfare, while in central and western regions, it shows a significant positive impact on social welfare but has no significant effect on carbon emission reduction in the private car sector. Blade icing seriously affects wind turbines' aerodynamic performance and output power. Timely and accurately predicting blade icing status is crucial to improving the economy and safety of wind farms. However, existing blade icing prediction methods cannot effectively solve the problems of unbalanced icing/non-icing data and low prediction accuracy. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes a wind turbine blade icing prediction method based on the focal loss function and CNN-Attention-GRU. First, the recursive feature elimination method combined with the physical mechanism of icing is used to extract features highly correlated with blade icing, and a new feature subset is formed through a sliding window algorithm. Then, the focal loss function is utilized to assign more weight to the ice samples with a lower proportion, addressing the significant class imbalance between the ice and non-ice categories. Finally, based on the CNN-Attention-GRU algorithm, a blade icing prediction model is established using continuous 24-h historical data as the input and the icing status of the next 24 h as the output. The model is compared with advanced neural network models. The results show that the proposed method improves the prediction accuracy and F1 score by an average of 6.41% and 4.27%, respectively, demonstrating the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. The well-known dispatcher training simulator (DTS), as a good tool to train power system dispatchers, has been widely used for over 40 years. However, with the high-speed development of the smart grid, the traditional DTSs have struggled to meet the power industry's expectations. To enhance the effectiveness of dispatcher training, technical innovations in DTSs are becoming more and more demanding. Meanwhile, the ever-advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technology provides the basis for the design of intelligent DTSs. This paper systematically reviews the traditional DTS in terms of its origin, structure, and functions, as well as limitations in the context of the smart grid. Then, this paper summarizes the AI techniques commonly used in the field of power systems, such as expert systems, artificial neural networks, and the fuzzy set theory, and employs them to develop intelligent DTSs. Regarding a less studied aspect of DTSs, i.e., intelligent training control, we introduce the Adaptive Learning System (ALS) to develop a personalized training program, which will also be an important aspect of future research. The paper conducts a literature review of applications of autoregressive methods to short-term forecasting of power demand. This need is dictated by the advancement of modern forecasting methods and their achievement in good forecasting efficiency in particular. The annual effectiveness of forecasting power demand for the Polish National Power Grid for the next day is approx. 1%; therefore, the main objective of the review is to verify whether it is possible to improve efficiency while maintaining the minimum financial outlays and time-consuming efforts. The methods that fulfil these conditions are autoregressive methods; therefore, the paper focuses on autoregressive methods, which are less time-consuming and, as a result, cheaper in development and applications. The prepared review ranks the forecasting models in terms of the forecasting effectiveness achieved in the literature on the subject, which enables the selection of models that may improve the currently achieved effectiveness of the transmission system operator. Due to the applied approach, a transparent set of forecasting methods and models was obtained, in addition to knowledge about their potential in the context of the needs for short-term forecasting of electricity demand in the national power system. The articles in which the MAPE error was used to assess the quality of short-term forecasts were analyzed. The investigation included 47 articles, several dozen forecasting methods, and 264 forecasting models. The articles date from 1997 and, apart from the autoregressive methods, also include the methods and models that use explanatory variables (non-autoregressive ones). The input data used come from the period 1998–2014. The analysis included 25 power systems located on four continents (Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia) that were published by 44 different research teams. The results of the review show that in the autoregressive methods applied to forecasting short-term power demand, there is a potential to improve forecasting effectiveness in power systems. The most promising prognostic models using the autoregressive approach, based on the review, include Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Neural Networks, Wavelet Artificial Neural Networks, Adaptive Neurofuse Inference Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy Regression, and Data Envelope Analysis. These methods make it possible to achieve the efficiency of short-term forecasting of electricity demand with hourly resolution at the level below 1%, which confirms the assumption made by the authors about the potential of autoregressive methods. Other forecasting models, the effectiveness of which is high, may also prove useful in forecasting by electricity system operators. The paper also discusses the classical methods of Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Big Data, and the state of research in short-term power demand forecasting in power systems using autoregressive and non-autoregressive methods and models. In the extremely competitive environment of shipping, minimizing shipping cost is the key factor for the survival and growth of shipping companies. However, stricter rules and regulations that aim at the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions published by the International Maritime Organization, force shipping companies to increase the operational efficiency of their fleet. The prediction of a ship speed in actual seas with a given power by its engine is the most important performance indicator and thus makes it the "holy grail" in pursuing better efficiency. Traditionally, tank model tests and semi-empirical formulas were the preferred solution for the aforementioned prediction and are still widely applied. However, currently, with the increased computational power that is widely available, novel and more sophisticated methods taking into consideration computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and machine learning (ML) algorithms are emerging. In this paper, we briefly present the different approaches in the prediction of a ship's speed but focus on ML methods comparing a representative number of the latest data-driven models used in papers, to provide guidelines, discover trends and identify the challenges to be faced by researchers. From this comparison, we can distinguish that artificial neural networks (ANN), being used in 73.3% of the reviewed papers, dominate as the algorithm of choice. Researchers mostly rely on physical laws governing the phenomena in the crucial part of data preprocessing tasks. Real-time and accurate state-of-charge estimation performs an important role in the smooth operation of various electric vehicle battery management systems. Neural network theory represents one of the most effective and commonly used methods of SOC prediction. However, traditional neural network methods are disadvantaged by such issues as the limited range of application, limited generalization ability, and low accuracy, which makes it difficult to meet the increasing safety requirements on electric vehicles. In view of these problems, an ensemble learning algorithm based on the AdaBoost.Rt is proposed in this paper. AdaBoost.Rt recurrent neural network model is purposed to ensure the accurate prediction of lithium battery SOC. Relying on a chain-connected recurrent neural network model, this method enables the correlation adaptability of sample data in the spatio-temporal dimension. The ensemble learning method was adopted to devise a method of multi-RNN model integration, with the RNN model as the base learner, thus constructing the AdaBoost.Rt-RNN strong learner model. According to the results of simulation and experimental comparisons, the integrated algorithm proposed in this paper is applicable to improve the accuracy of SOC prediction and the generalization performance of the model. The production of high-performing thermoelectrics is limited by the high computational energy and time required by the current finite element method solvers that are used to analyze these devices. This paper introduces a new concentrating solar thermoelectric generator made of segmented materials that have non-uniform leg geometry to provide high efficiency. After this, the optimum performance of the device is obtained using the finite element method conducted using ANSYS software. Finally, to solve the high energy and time requirements of the conventional finite element method, the data generated by finite elements are used to train a regressive artificial neural network with 10 neurons in the hidden layer. Results are that the power and efficiency obtained from the optimized device design are 3× and 2× higher than the original unoptimized device design. Furthermore, the developed neural network has a high accuracy of 99.95% in learning the finite element data. Finally, the neural network predicts the modified device performance about 800× faster than the conventional finite element method. Overall, the paper provides insights into how thermoelectric manufacturing companies can harness the power of artificial intelligence to design very high-performing devices while saving time and cost.
