Although there are opportunities to reduce electrical energy demand in unit processes of mechanical pulp-based paper and paperboard production, this may not be financially beneficial. This is generally because energy optimization opportunities connected to reduced refiner electricity demand in mechanical pulping systems also results in less steam available for the drying of the paper. As modern high consistency refiner systems produce approximately one ton of steam for each MWh of electricity when producing one ton of pulp, a reduction in electric energy demand leads to increased fuel demand in steam boilers to compensate for the steam shortage. In this study, we investigated what the financial and environmental situation would look like if we were to expand the system border from a paper mill to a larger system consisting of a mechanical pulp-based paper or paperboard mill, a district heating system with an incineration boiler and a chemical pulp mill. Mechanical pulp production has a wood to product yield of >90%, a high electric energy demand to separate woodchips to pulp and is a net producer of heat and steam while chemical pulp-based production has a wood to product yield of 50%, a low electric energy demand and is a net heat and electricity producer due to the combustion of dissolved wood polymers. The aim of this research is to create useful and robust models of how to use excess heat from certain industry sites to cover the steam shortage in other industry sites by means of utilizing and optimizing the district heating systems connecting these sites. For this purpose, we used a simulation tool which dynamically allows us to evaluate different scenarios. Electricity consumption in buildings is one of the major causes of energy usage and knowledge of this can help building owners and users increase energy efficiency and conservation efforts. For Pacific Island countries, building electricity demand data is not readily accessible or available for constructing models to predict electricity demand. This paper starts to fill this gap by studying the case of schools in Fiji. The aim of the paper is to assess the factors affecting electricity demand for grid-connected Fijian schools and use this assessment to build mathematical models (multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN)) to predict electricity consumption. The average grid-connected electricity demand in kWh/year was 1411 for early childhood education schools, 5403 for primary schools, and 23,895 for secondary schools. For predicting electricity demand (ED) for all grid-connected schools, the stepwise MLR model shows that taking logarithm transformations on both the dependent variable and independent variables (number of students, lights, and air conditioning systems) yields statistically significant independent variables with an R2 value of 73.3% and RMSE of 0.2248. To improve the predicting performance, ANN models were constructed on both the natural form of variables and transformed variables. The optimum ANN model had an R2 value of 95.3% and an RMSE of 59.4 kWh/year. The findings of this study can assist schools in putting measures in place to reduce their electricity demand, associated costs, and carbon footprint, as well as help government ministries make better-informed policies. Behind the meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, have experienced significant growth in residential locations. Accurate load forecasting is crucial for the efficient operation and management of these resources. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art technologies and models employed in the load forecasting process of BTM DERs in recent years. The review covers a wide range of models, from traditional approaches to machine learning (ML) algorithms, discussing their applicability. A rigorous validation process is essential to ensure the model's precision and reliability. Cross-validation techniques can be utilized to reduce overfitting risks, while using multiple evaluation metrics offers a comprehensive assessment of the model's predictive capabilities. Comparing the model's predictions with real-world data helps identify areas for improvement and further refinement. Additionally, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has recently announced its plan to collect electricity consumption data from identified U.S.-based crypto mining companies, which can exhibit abnormal energy consumption patterns due to rapid fluctuations. Hence, some real-world case studies have been presented that focus on irregular energy consumption patterns in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs. These abnormal activities underscore the importance of implementing robust anomaly detection techniques to identify and address such deviations from typical energy usage profiles. Thus, our proposed framework, presented in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs, considering smart meters (SMs). Finally, a thorough exploration of potential challenges and emerging models based on artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs) is suggested as a promising approach. Demand response management (DRM) plays a crucial role in the prospective development of smart grids. The precise estimation of electricity demand for individual houses is vital for optimizing the operation and planning of the power system. Accurate forecasting of the required components holds significance as it can substantially impact the final cost, mitigate risks, and support informed decision-making. In this paper, a forecasting approach employing neural networks for smart grid demand-side management is proposed. The study explores various enhanced artificial neural network (ANN) architectures for forecasting smart grid consumption. The performance of the ANN approach in predicting energy demands is evaluated through a comparison with three statistical models: a time series model, an auto-regressive model, and a hybrid model. This paper addresses the optimization of contracted electricity demand (CD) for commercial and industrial entities, focusing on cost reduction within the Brazilian time-of-use electricity tariff scheme. Leveraging genetic algorithms (GAs), this study proposes a practical approach to determining the optimal CD profile, considering the complex dynamics of energy demand on a city-like load. The methodology is applied to a case study at the Federal University of Pará, Brazil, where energy efficiency and demand response initiatives as well as renewable energy projects are underway. This paper offers a theoretical and experimental examination of the concurrent production of electricity and heat using photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) technology. The efficiency performance of the PV/T system is meticulously analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink software environments. Notably, the proposed PV/T system shows reliable performance, and its validity is confirmed through experimental validation on a test stand with a single PV/T panel positioned at a 45-degree angle to the horizontal and a 0-degree azimuth angle. The measurements were conducted during the summer season, and two models were suggested to calculate the overall efficiency of the PV/T system. The variance between the results obtained from the two models was minimal, below 5%. Over time, several relationships have been defined between electricity consumption and a region's social and economic variables, with income as the main factor. This paper uses multiple correspondence analysis to identify the categories of dwellings and, from a graphical point of view (positioning maps), the effects of the different characteristics that influence the electricity consumption of households in rural areas of Cundinamarca, Colombia. In this analysis, the consumption of residential users responded mainly to what they can afford or acquire based on their income, consumption habits, and the characteristics of the technology. Furthermore, this study highlights the implications of these findings for policymakers and energy providers, providing valuable insights for developing targeted strategies to promote energy efficiency and sustainability in rural areas. With the rapid development of smart grids and distributed energy sources, the home energy management system (HEMS) is becoming a hot topic of research as a hub for connecting customers and utilities for energy visualization. Accurate forecasting of future short-term residential electricity demand for each major appliance is a key part of the energy management system. This paper aims to explore the current research status of household-level short-term load forecasting, summarize the advantages and disadvantages of various forecasting methods, and provide research ideas for short-term household load forecasting and household energy management. Firstly, the paper analyzes the latest research results and research trends in deep learning load forecasting methods in terms of network models, feature extraction, and adaptive learning; secondly, it points out the importance of combining probabilistic forecasting methods that take into account load uncertainty with deep learning techniques; and further explores the implications and methods for device-level as well as ultra-short-term load forecasting. In addition, the paper also analyzes the importance of short-term household load forecasting for the scheduling of electricity consumption in household energy management systems. The purpose of this paper is to uncover how the process of managing electricity in buildings based on the Internet of Things occurs. In particular, the work seeks to depict the factors affecting electricity consumption and management, as well as the application of the Internet of Things in energy management. A systematic literature review is used to examine the breadth of the electric energy management literature, encompassing bibliometric and thematic analysis based on an established procedure. The findings show the evolution of this field within key research networks with a few papers covering important elements of energy management, such as energy use, consumption and monitoring, assessment, and planning, in an integrative manner. Within this field, lacking in theory and practice, the originality of the work is the assembly of electric energy management into a conceptual framework based on real-time consumption and the Internet of Things (IoT). Indeed, the framework brings together the breadth of factors affecting consumption, energy use, and improvements that have been dispersed across the literature into one place. This framework, therefore, represents a stage towards an integrative view of IoT electric energy management and subsequent enhancement of theory and energy efficiency adoption. This paper explores the potential of rooftop solar PV to meet the electricity demand in the urban areas of Abha city, Saudi Arabia (KSA), minimising imports from the grid. A localised energy system for Abha is proposed that considers two types of loads: (i) residential loads with a monthly aggregated energy consumption of 172,440 MWh and an electric demand of 239.5 MW, and (ii) commercial loads with a monthly aggregated energy consumption of 179,280 MWh and an electric demand of 249 MW. The grid currently supplies this load. This paper proposes a PV development planning tool for residential and commercial areas to calculate the total PV production for each type of load to achieve a balanced energy area, considering (i) the number of buildings, (ii) the type of load, (iii) the peak load, and (iv) the total PV array area in m2 per building. The results of the modelling study using real data demonstrate that the anticipated total PV production in residential and commercial areas is sufficient to meet local peak demand, and there is an excess of power that can either be stored locally or exported to the grid. Global energy consumption is growing rapidly, with the frequency and intensity of extreme events constantly increasing, posing a long-term threat to power supply and consumption. Therefore, analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of electricity consumption and quantitatively assessing the impact of extreme events on electricity consumption are of great significance. Based on fine-grained electricity consumption data from Europe for the years 2019–2022, this paper employs a data mining perspective and four methods including Z-score, Isolation Forest, Local Outlier Factor, and Autoencoder to detect abnormal electricity consumption during extreme events. Additionally, it combines indicators such as elastic loss, vulnerability, and duration to measure the impact of extreme events on electricity consumption. It is found that low temperatures could lead to abrupt changes in electricity consumption, with Northern Europe being more significantly affected by low temperatures. The COVID-19 pandemic had the most significant impact on electricity consumption in Europe, with the middle part of Europe being the hardest hit during the first wave of the pandemic. Electricity anomalies during the pandemic period were related to national pandemic control policies and exhibited some lag. Fruit and vegetable processing comes 6th in terms of energy consumption in the agri-food industry. At the same time, 88.4% of the industry's final energy consumption structure is thermal energy, which depends heavily on electricity consumption. In addition, fruit and vegetable processing has a significant impact on the environment due to consumption of significant amounts of water. Reducing these three indicators simultaneously would increase the efficiency of the process while improving environmental protection. This paper proposes neural models of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption for selected major fruit- and vegetable-processing plants in Poland. These models were the basis for formulating a multi-criteria optimization task. Optimization of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption was carried out using genetic algorithms. As the scale of electricity consumption grows, the peak electricity consumption prediction of campus buildings is essential for effective building energy system management. The selection of an appropriate model is of paramount importance to accurately predict peak electricity consumption of campus buildings due to the substantial variations in electricity consumption trends and characteristics among campus buildings. In this paper, we proposed eight deep recurrent neural networks and compared their performance in predicting peak electricity consumption for each campus building to select the best model. Furthermore, we applied an attention approach capable of capturing long sequence patterns and controlling the importance level of input states. The test cases involve three campus buildings in Incheon City, South Korea: an office building, a nature science building, and a general education building, each with different scales and trends of electricity consumption. The experiment results demonstrate the importance of accurate model selection to enhance building energy efficiency, as no single model's performance dominates across all buildings. Over the last decade, a constantly growing trend of the popularization of self-service automated stores has been observed. Vending machines have been expanded into fully automated stores, the offer of which is comparable to small, conventional stores. One of the basic reasons for the popularization of modern automated stores is the reduction in a store's energy consumption while ensuring a comparable range of products offered. The research into possibilities of reducing greenhouse gases emission is important in terms of the environment and climate protection. The research presented in the paper concerns the development of a model for determining electricity consumption, operating costs and CO2 emission of an automated store designed and developed by Delfin company. In the developed model, the potential location of the store, prevailing climatic conditions and expected product sales are taken into account. Estimated energy demand for the store is the information of key importance for the potential investors and the manufacturer of the automated store. It is worth emphasizing that the average annual electrical energy consumption evaluated for a grocery store of an area of 70 m2 amounted to approximately 38.4 MWh, while for an automated store of an area of 9 m2 and a comparable product range, the electricity consumption was approximately 10.1 MWh, i.e., 74% smaller. Energy efficiency is one of the most powerful strategies to mitigate the impacts of climate change by reducing energy demand, which in turn reduces the emissions of Green House Gases (GHG), as well as reducing the burden on the supply side renewable generation expansion. Because electric motors systems represent such a large share of the overall electricity consumption (over 50%), large savings potential could be made available by the use of energy-efficient motor systems both in new installations and by accelerating the replacement of old inefficient motors. Since electric motors are very reliable, their lifetime is long (according to recent studies it may exceed 20 years) which translates into a very inefficient existing stock despite worldwide policy efforts. This paper analyzes the current efficiency of the installed stock and the causes for its low efficiency, possible policy options to increase its the efficiency, the role of new technologies and improvements possible by targeting the entire motor system at the time of motor replacement. The paper presents an innovative analysis of the estimated impact of increasing the uptake of high-efficiency motors and motor systems; effective policies could translate into 100 TWh/year in the European Union if additional measures, such as addressing oversizing, proper controls (VSDs) and digitisation, are also implemented. The energy use of residues from agriculture, forestry, and solid waste can foster the transition towards a more renewable energy supply. This paper analyzes the energy potential of the above-mentioned sources for energy applications in Kosovo. The analysis is based on statistical data from different studies and reports, analyzing and calculating them to determine the theoretical and energy biomass potential. Kosovo can increase its self-sufficiency by taking advantage of its rich but under-utilized potential of biomass energy sources. This is a novelty study in this area, considering Kosovo lignite-dominated heat energy and electricity consumption and the available special literature. According to our estimates, the theoretical potential is 6.13 million tons/year, while the biomass energy potential should be around 4.57 million tons/year, including approximately 74.6% of biomass, which can be used for energy needs (heating and electricity). Based on the data and calculations, the available and usable potential shows biomass as an energy source with high potential in Kosovo; its share is very low, but it is reasonable to grow for both environmental and economic reasons. Driving a tram in city traffic is a challenging task. It is especially difficult to drive smoothly (without unnecessary jerks) when the route runs through streets with many other vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic lights. A smooth driving style of the tram driver not only has a significant impact on the comfort of passengers being transported, but also affects the energy consumption of the tram. The paper focuses on the analysis of the tram driver's way of driving and the resulting energy savings. The energy consumption of the tram was measured depending on the driver's driving technique. For the analysis of the driving technique, an innovative electronic device was proposed to be installed on the tram. It detects jerks in the lateral and longitudinal directions. Based on vibration analysis, it evaluates the driver's driving technique on an ongoing basis and displays the result of this assessment. The device is cheap and uses a popular minicomputer, a GPS system receiver, an IMU accelerometer, and a screen. It is independent of the electronic systems of the tram. Due to this, it is possible to increase passenger comfort and reduce electricity consumption. It can be useful when learning to drive a tram. Carbon reduction programs are being introduced for carbon neutrality and energy transition to clean energy sources in various sectors, such as energy, buildings, transportation, and agriculture. In the residential electricity energy of the energy sector, the time-of-use (TOU) rate plan, which employs dynamic rates depending on energy usage times based on the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), is being implemented for efficient electricity energy consumption. For broad expansion of the TOU rate plan, customers need information about its benefits, such as potential savings on electricity bills. In this paper, we first analyze the statistical characteristics of electricity energy usage using the metering data collected from 10 apartment complexes through AMI and develop a model to calculate the electricity bill savings. We next introduce examples of major home appliances, of which usage times can be shifted, and offer projected bill savings from the developed model. We analyze the examples from both the perspectives of households and apartment complexes. The information from this analysis is helpful in practically investigating customers' willingness to shift the usage time for a successful implementation of the demand response program. In the face of ongoing climate changes and the current geopolitical situation, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are continuously gaining popularity in many countries. Objectives related to environmental protection and the use of RES set by different countries all over the world, as well as by the European Union (EU), are becoming priorities for many. The increase in the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems has been growing steadily for several years, leading to the creation of new systems accompanying PV installations; this phenomenon has also been observed in Poland. This paper presents a photovoltaic system in the form of a bicycle shed next to a school building as an example of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) without connection to the power grid. It was shown that the energy consumption profile should be properly correlated with the production profile, otherwise significant losses occur. Alternative methods to improve the correlation of production and energy consumption by using SCADA systems or building automation to properly manage the electricity generation and consumption installation were also proposed. Furthermore, it was shown that adopting a fixed discount rate in financial analyses can distort the picture of real profits. The development of renewable energy in China has made remarkable achievements, but the problem of renewable energy consumption has become increasingly prominent. This paper establishes a power market trading system for renewable energy, with the aim of promoting large-scale renewable energy consumption and increasing the enthusiasm of renewable energy producers and users to participate in market transactions. First, according to the power generation cost, the backup cost of renewable energy power plants and the possible quotation strategies of other renewable energy producers, a quotation model of renewable energy producers is established. In the clearing of the spot market by renewable energy producers, the independent market operator conducts the first-stage clearing of the electricity market with the goal of maximizing social welfare. After the announcement of the clearing results, the renewable energy producers that did not win the bid will revise their quotations and carry out the second stage clearing to realize the consumption of renewable energy. In this paper, the particle swarm algorithm combined with the CPLEX solver is used to solve the problem, and finally, different scenarios are analyzed through example analysis. The results show that, compared with the conventional power market trading mechanism, the energy abandonment rate of the power market trading mechanism for renewable energy proposed in this paper drops from 8.2% to 2.1%, and the profit margin of renewable energy producers increase by 6.6%. It is demonstrated that the proposed electricity market mechanism can effectively promote the consumption of renewable energy and increase the income of renewable energy producers. The increasing use of high shares of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the current electricity network introduces challenges to the design and management of the electricity network due to the variation and uncertainty nature of the RESs. Some existing energy infrastructures, such as heat, gas, and transport, all have some level of inbuilt storage capacity and demand response (DR) potentials that can be exploited in an energy system integration to give the electricity network some level of flexibility and promote an efficient transition to a low-carbon, resilient, and robust energy system. The process of integrating different energy infrastructure is known as multi-vector energy systems (MESs). This paper reviews different studies on the planning of MESs using the energy hubs (EHs) approach. The EHs model used in this paper links different energy vectors such as gas, electricity, and heat energy vectors in its planning model, as opposed to planning each energy vector independently, in order to provide more flexibility in the system, minimise total planning cost, and encourage high penetration of renewable energy source for future energy demands. In addition, different uncertainty modelling and optimization methods that have been used in past studies in planning of EH are classified and reviewed to ascertain the appropriate techniques for addressing RESs uncertainty when planning future EH. The electric power sector plays a central role in changing the EU's energy landscape and establishing Europe as the first climate-neutral continent in the world. This paper investigates fundamental shifts in the EU's electric power sector by carrying out its logarithmic mean Divisia index decomposition by stages of electricity flows on a large-scale basis (for both the entire EU and its 25 member states) for the period 1995–2021 and identifies the individual contribution of each EU member state to these shifts. In this study, four decomposition models were proposed and 14 impact factors (extensive, structural, and intensive) affecting the development of the EU electric power sector were evaluated in absolute and relative terms. It was found that the wind–gas transition, which took place in the EU's electric power sector, was accompanied by an increase in the transformation efficiency of inputs in electricity generation and a drop in the intensity of final energy consumption. The non-industrial reorientation of the EU's economy also resulted in a decrease in the final electricity consumption. At the same time, this transition led to negative shifts in the structure and utilization of its generation capacities. The fundamental shifts occurred mainly at the expense of large economies (Germany, France, Spain, and Italy), but smaller economies (Romania, Poland, Croatia, the Netherlands, and others) made significant efforts to accelerate them, although their contributions on a pan-European scale were less tangible. Dissipated energy can be converted into electricity using regenerative energy recovery systems and put to various uses. This study tenders a thorough examination into energy recovery technologies which could be applied to the various types of energy dissipated in electric vehicles. The paper investigates the possible sources of energy recoverable from an electric vehicle, as well as the various types of energy dissipated. It also examines the energy recovery technologies most frequently used in vehicles, categorizing them according to the type of energy and application. Finally, it determines that with further research and development, energy harvesting holds considerable potential for improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles. New and innovative methods for capturing and utilizing wasted energy in electric vehicles can be established. The potential benefit of applying energy recovery systems in electric vehicles is a vital issue for the automobile industry to focus on due to the potential benefits involved. Electric vehicles are growing in popularity as a form of transportation, but are still underused for several reasons, such as their relatively low range and the high costs associated with manufacturing and maintaining batteries. Many studies using several approaches have been conducted on electric vehicles. Among all studied subjects, here we are interested in the use of machine learning to efficiently manage the energy consumption of electric vehicles, in order to develop intelligent electric vehicles that make quick unprogrammed decisions based on observed data allowing minimal electricity consumption. Our interest is motivated by the adequate results obtained using machine learning in many fields and the increasing but still insufficient use of machine learning to efficiently manage the energy consumption of electric vehicles. From this standpoint, we have built this comprehensive survey covering a broad variety of scientific papers in the field published over the last few years. Off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems represent the most modern and flexible solutions that can cover a wide range of energy efficiency needs for household consumers. In the current context, these systems must be taken into account by most household consumers, given the fact that the price of energy has increased. This paper proposes an experimental analysis of the behavior of such a system, in real operating conditions, considering two renewable energy sources, wind and photovoltaic sources, using an experimental stand. It can be considered a testing platform for hybrid energy production systems, in that the power installed in the two sources can be scaled up. The platform has the advantage of allowing the implementation of different load and wind curves through a programmable logic controller; in this way, it is possible to evaluate the degree of coverage of the energy consumption produced from renewable sources, in the north-east of Romania, in the Suceava County region. The experimental study also involves an analysis of the storage capacity in relation to the consumption and the electricity produced by the two renewable sources. In this regard, three scenarios differentiated by the state of charge (30%, 50% and 70%) have been established. The results indicate that, for each of the imposed scenarios, the energy required to cover consumption is produced by renewable energy sources (42%, 47% and 53%), to which the energy stored in batteries (39%, 28% and 18%) is added. The estimation of electric power utilization, its baseload, and its heating, light, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) power component, which represents a very large portion of electricity usage in commercial facilities, are important for energy consumption controls and planning. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is the analytical method used to monitor the energy and disaggregate total electrical usage into appliance-related signals as an alternative to installing multiple electricity meters in the building. However, despite considerable progress, there are a limited number of tools dedicated to the problem of reliable and complete energy disaggregation. This paper presents an experiment consisting in designing an electrical system with electrical energy receivers, and then starting NILM disaggregation using machine learning algorithms (MLA). The quality of this disaggregation was assessed using dedicated indicators. Subsequently, the quality of these MLA was also verified using the available BLUED data source. The results show that the proposed method guarantees non-intrusive load disaggregation but still requires further research and testing. This paper investigates the relationship between geothermal energy consumption, economic growth, and foreign direct investments in countries where geothermal energy production is possible. Panel Fourier Granger causality and panel Fourier Toda–Yamamoto causality tests (2020–2021) were applied, which can take into account smooth transitional structural breaks with trigonometric functions using quarterly data for the period 2016 Q1–2020 Q3. Data were obtained from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), and the OECD official website. According to the results obtained based on panels, there is one-way causality from economic growth to geothermal energy and one-way causality from geothermal energy consumption to foreign direct investments. The results obtained based on individual countries indicate that one-way causality from foreign direct investment to geothermal energy consumption was found for Mexico and Portugal, and one-way causality from geothermal energy consumption to economic growth was found for Italy and Mexico. On the other hand, causality from economic growth to geothermal energy consumption was observed for Germany, Japan, and USA. No significant results were found for Turkey and New Zealand, and it is understood that the macroeconomic structures of these countries are not affected by geothermal energy. Electricity is used in educational buildings, and there are now numerous attempts to reduce consumption, achieve sustainability, and protect the environment. This paper aims to study energy consumption, identify opportunities to rationalize energy consumption, and propose solutions at Sulaiman Al-Rajhi University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in order for the university campus to become sustainable. The results showed that total annual electrical consumption totaled 13,859 MWh in 2021. The air conditioning system, other devices, and lighting have the percentage of consumption 79, 14, and 7% of the total, respectively. Electricity consumption intensity was approximately 145–155 kWh/m2, and the per capita intensity was approximately 12,987–16,351 kWh, in the period 2017–2021. The price of the electrical energy generated on the university campus ranged between 0.3 and 0.53 SR/kWh in 2021, while the electricity tariff from the grid for educational buildings was 0.18 SR/kWh. This means that the public grid was 50% cheaper than campus-generated electricity. At the price of energy generated by generators, the total simple payback time (SPBT) for the suggested energy conservation measures (ECMs) is 4.13 years, whereas the SPBT is 8.96 in the case of the consumption of the electricity supplied by the national grid. Negawatt trading is expected to improve energy efficiency via the prediction of peak demands and power-saving requests. However, the amount of power saved by consumers is not stable. The accurate prediction of demands and making appropriate requests with respect to power saving are difficult obstacles that need to be overcome in order to attain useful negawatt trading processes. To increase the accuracy of predictions and requests, earlier research suggests some methods or linear problems. On the other hand, the investigation of factors that affect consumption is important for correcting the current instability. In this research study, weather changes including temperature, time passing, and the consciousness of consumers are considered as important factors against electricity demands. In this paper, we propose a behavioral model of consumers using weather data. By using this behavioral model, the effectiveness of the suggested methods in earlier research for improving negawatt trading and the uncertainty of negawatts caused by weather changes is investigated. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) can obtain fine-grained electricity consumption information of each appliance by analyzing the voltage and current data measured at a single point on the bus, which is of great significance for promoting and improving the efficiency and sustainability of the power grid and enhancing the energy efficiency of users. NILM mainly includes data collection and preprocessing, event detection, feature extraction, and appliance identification. One of the most critical steps in NILM is signature extraction, which is the basis for all algorithms to achieve good state detection and energy disaggregation. With the generalization of machine learning algorithms, different algorithms have also been used to extract unique signatures of appliances. Recently, the development and deployment of the voltage–current (V-I) trajectory signatures applied for appliance identification motivated us to present a comprehensive review in this domain. The V-I trajectory signatures have the potential to be an intermediate domain between computer vision and NILM. By identifying the V-I trajectory, we can detect the operating state of the appliance. The introduction of the new round of electricity reform policies has made the electricity sales companies' trading environment increasingly complex. In the medium- and long-term market and spot market, following the new policy-oriented optimization of trading decisions is the focus of electricity sales companies. The main objective of this study is to consider the impact of the latest policies of China's current electricity reform on each subject of electricity trading and to propose a method for electricity sales companies to make optimal decisions on renewable energy source (RES) power and conventional energy source (CES) power mixed with power trading in the medium- and long-term and spot markets to improve the efficiency of electricity market trading, promoting the consumption of renewable energy and helping the synergistic development of the electricity market and the tradable green certificate (TGC) market. This paper first discusses the impact of the new electricity reform policies on the transactions of various subjects in the electricity market and constructs the model of the consumer utility function, the profit model of an electricity sales company, and the profit model of power generators with energy storage. Considering the complex power supply and demand relationship among the various subjects of the electricity market, a game model is established for the decision on mixed trading between the medium- and long-term market, the spot market, and the tradable green certificate market to minimize the comprehensive power purchase cost of an electricity sales company. To reduce the decision-making risk caused by the uncertainty of spot price, the prophet model is used to predict the spot price; finally, through the analysis of the decision-making model of the electricity sales companies, the optimal transaction decisions of the electricity sales companies in different trading periods and different scenarios are solved. The test results show that the proposed model can significantly improve the profitability of the electricity sales companies and provide a decision-making reference for electricity sales companies to participate in the medium- and long-term market and spot market. The analyses presented in the publication allowed, on the basis of the data collected, development of an econometric model for the Polish steel industry from the point of view of the relationship between heat and energy management in the steel production process. The developed model is the main novelty of the paper. The main objective of the study was to develop an econometric model of Poland's heat and energy economy. The following research questions were raised: Is there an econometric model describing heat consumption (intensity) in the steel industry in Poland in relation to steel production and the energy economy? What are the relations between heat intensity and energy prices and steel production in Poland? How might the current energy crisis affect steel production? In the analysis we used data of energy and heat management in the Polish steel industry. An econometric model was developed of the dependence of heat consumption (Yt) on electricity prices (X1t) and steel production (X2t) in Poland. The authors took advantage of open access to data. Annual volumes of heat consumption in steel production processes in Poland were analysed as a function of the annual volume of steel production and the prices of electricity, which are consumed in technological processes in steel mills. We analyzed data for years 2004–2020. The analyses carried out showed that there is an inversely proportional relationship between electricity prices and the intensity of heat consumption by the steel industry. Research shows that rising energy prices lead to lower steel production. This is a dangerous phenomenon for the steel industry in the context of the current energy crisis caused by the pandemic and war in Ukraine. We think that the significance of our results is connected with the fact that the developed model is a useful analytical tool, as it not only allows the analysis of historical data, but can also be used to predict how steel industry parameters will change in the future under the influence of changes in external factors, such as energy prices. Reducing the consumption of electricity by computing devices is currently an urgent task. Moreover, if earlier this problem belonged to the competence of hardware developers and the design of more cost-effective equipment, then more recently there has been an increased interest in this issue on the part of software developers. The issues of these studies are extensive. From energy efficiency issues of various programming languages to the development of energy-saving software for smartphones and other gadgets. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has reported an analysis of the impact of cache optimizations on computing devices' power consumption. Hence, this paper aims to provide an analysis of such impact on the software energy efficiency using the original software design procedure and computational experiments. The proposed Software Cache Optimization (SCO)-based Methodology was applied to one of the key linear algebra transformations. Experiments were carried out to determine software energy efficiency. RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) was used—an interface developed by Intel, which provides built-in counters of Central Processing Unit (CPU) energy consumption. Measurements have shown that optimized software versions reduce power consumption up to 4 times in relation to the basic transformation scheme. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the SCO-based Methodology used to reduce energy consumption and the applicability of this technique for software optimization. To achieve the goal of achieving carbon-neutral by 2060, the government of China has put forward higher requirements for energy conservation and consumption reduction in the energy industry. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce energy consumption in the process of transporting oil. In this paper, an optimization model that minimizes the total energy consumption of the entire pipeline system is proposed and the squirrel search algorithm (SSA) is used to solve the optimization model. Meanwhile, to improve the performance of the SSA, two strategies are proposed. One is the adaptive inertia weight strategy, and the other is the multi-group co-evolution strategy. The adaptive inertia weight can adjust the step size of the flying squirrels according to the difference of the objective function value and multi-group co-evolution is introduced to improve population diversity. The improved SSA is named multigroup coevolution-adaptive inertia weight SSA (MASSA). A total of 20 benchmark functions are used to test the performance of MASSA, including unimodal functions and multimodal functions. Compared with the other four algorithms, MASSA has better performance and convergence capabilities. In the case study experiment, an optimization model of the oil pipeline is built, which takes the minimum energy consumption of the whole pipeline as the objective function. Compared with the actual operating conditions, the electricity consumption optimized by MASSA decreases by 399,018.94 kgce, and the thermal energy dissipation decreases by 113,759.25 kgce. The total energy consumption is reduced by 512,778.19 kgce, which is 9.62%. Conventional construction materials which rely on a fossil-based, nonrenewable extractive economy are typically associated with an entrenched linear economic approach to production. Current research indicates the clear interrelationships between the production and use of construction materials and anthropogenic climate change. This paper investigates the potential for emerging high-performance biobased construction materials, produced sustainably and/or using waste byproducts, to enable a more environmentally sustainable approach to the built environment. Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is employed to compare three wall assemblies using local biobased materials in Montreal (Canada), Nairobi (Kenya), and Accra (Ghana) vs. a traditional construction using gypsum boards and rockwool insulation. Global warming potential, nonrenewable cumulative energy demand, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, and freshwater consumption (FWC) are considered. Scenarios include options for design for disassembly (DfD), as well as potential future alternatives for electricity supply in Kenya and Ghana. Results indicate that all biobased alternatives have lower (often significantly so) life-cycle impacts per functional unit, compared to the traditional construction. DfD strategies are also shown to result in −10% to −50% impact reductions. The results for both African countries exhibit a large dependence on the electricity source used for manufacturing, with significant potential for future decarbonization, but also some associated tradeoffs in terms of acidification and eutrophication. Renewable energy communities are catalysts of social innovation, the citizens' engagement in energy actions, and the exploitation of local resources. Thus, this paper defines a model for analyzing and optimally sizing energy systems serving renewable energy communities. Then, the proposed and replicable model was tailored to the economic feasibility analysis of a renewable energy community in the municipality of Tirano (Northern Italy). An energy audit was carried out to identify the electricity production and consumption within the perimeter of the primary substation and the thermal energy demand of the existing district heating network. The technical features of the energy conversion systems serving the renewable energy community were determined: an organic Rankine cycle biomass-based cogeneration plant, a mini-hydro plant, and a distributed photovoltaic system. Moreover, several different scenarios have been identified, in terms of cogeneration operating mode, photovoltaic penetration, and thermal energy economic value. The results show that, moving from 4.22 MW to 5.22 MW of photovoltaic peak power, the annual renewable electricity production increases by 10.1%. In particular, the simple pay back ranges between 4.90 and 4.98 years and the net present value between EUR 12.4 and 13.3 M for CHP operating at full power mode, considering that thermal energy available from the cogeneration unit is sold at EUR 49.2/MWh. These outcomes demonstrate the economic feasibility of wood-biomass-based renewable energy communities, which may help to enlarge the contribution of renewable technologies other than photovoltaic. Shifting from heating using fossil fuel combustion to electrified heating, dominated by heat pumps, is central to many countries' decarbonisation strategy. The consequent increase in electricity demand, combined with that from electric vehicles, and the shift from non-renewable to renewable generation requires increased demand flexibility to support system operation. Demand side response through interrupting heating during peak demands has been widely proposed and simulation modelling has been used to determine the technical potential. This paper proposes an empirical approach to quantifying a building's potential to operate flexibly, presenting a metric based on measured temperature drop in a dwelling under standard conditions after heating is switched off, using smart meter and internal temperature data. A result was derived for 96% of 193 homes within a test dataset, mean temperature drop of 1.5 °C in 3 h at 15 °C inside-outside temperature differential. An empirical flexibility metric may support decision making and decarbonisation. For households it may support the transition to heat pumps, enabling time of use costs and tariffs to be better understood and system to be specified by installers. As a crucial factor in the improvement of energy efficiency for power-using electromechanical products, the flow, conversion and distribution of energy are closely related to design variables of products. Simultaneously, performance is the constraint of energy efficiency and is strongly affected by design variables. In order to improve a product's energy efficiency without compromising performance, an energy flow model with a basic energy flow element (EFE) was built on a functional basis and its modelling procedure is presented in this paper. Containing function, design variable and characteristic energy in EFEs, as well as the interface parameters between EFEs and environment, the model contributes to logically clarifying the relationship between design variables and performance. With the refrigerator as an example, the effectiveness of the energy flow model is verified by a comparison between simulation, based on an energy flow model, and experimentation. Furthermore, five critical design variables of a 265 L refrigerator were screened with the model. Test results of the improved prototype meet the requirements of operating rate and temperature uniformity, and the daily electricity consumption was reduced by about 9%. Comparison between the design results of the energy flow model and the testing results of the prototype demonstrates that the energy efficiency improvement method based on energy flow model is effective. It is critical to address energy issues as we move through the first half of the twenty-first century, as societies become firmly aware of the consequences of resource scarcity and the disastrous consequences of climate change from human activity (especially heavy industry). We need new systems at the power supply and energy conversion levels, new approaches and solutions for transforming energy usage across manufacturing plants and new energy-efficient, greener technologies in companies across industries (particularly from those intensively consuming energy). Incremental changes in industry, across energy-consuming sectors and on all the levels - from industry policies to operational processes in companies - seem to be indispensable. Globally, some industries are large electricity purchasers, yet the consumption of energy greatly differs between countries, (i.e., the energy unit consumption in the pulp and paper industry noticeably varies among the 27 countries of the EU by a factor of 2-3 [[3]], with one of the primary reasons being production methods). This paper analyzes the changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to energy consumption in the Polish agricultural sector between 2000 and 2019. Based on the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI), the changes in agricultural CO2 emissions are viewed in the context of changes in six factors, i.e., CO2 emission intensity, substitution of fossil fuels, penetration of renewable energies, energy intensity, labor productivity and number of employees. The analysis demonstrated that total energy consumption declined over the study period; this was related to a reduction in the intake of energy derived from solid fossil fuels (−1.05%), crude oil (−1.01%), electricity (−4.89%), and heat (−1.37%), and to an increased consumption of natural gas (5.78%) and biofuels (0.82%). Furthermore, it follows from the analysis that changes in CO2 emissions witnessed in that period were consistent with changes in energy consumption levels; this resulted from a negligible transformation of the energy mix (largely determined by fossil fuels). Generally, CO2 emissions declined over the study period at a rate comparable (−0.9%) to that of the reduction in energy consumption (−1.03%). In light of the LMDI method, the reduction in CO2 emissions from fuel consumption in the Polish agricultural sector was mainly driven by a reduction in energy intensity and in employment. Conversely, rapid growth in labor productivity was the key factor in increasing carbon dioxide emissions. Compared to these impacts, changes in other factors (i.e., emission intensity, energy mix and penetration of renewable energies) had an extremely small or marginal effect on the variation in CO2 emissions. The EU has several directives aiming toward carbon neutrality and is attempting to promote and encourage individual electricity consumers to participate in this endeavor. The key idea behind consumer awakening and activation is to push consumers to become aware of their electricity consumption behavior. The purpose of this paper was to examine the current consumption behavior of Finnish electricity consumers and their intention to support the goals of carbon neutrality through energy efficient consumption. The aim was to reveal how far the consumption behavior of people was from the intention to tackle climate change. To reach this goal, a qualitative research method was applied to evaluate the consumer awareness and intentions. A consumer survey was conducted to enable standardized and consistent data collection. The research utilized a key performance indicator (KPI) approach to evaluate the results: the social KPIs connected with qualitative values provide a comprehensive approach. According to the results, the awareness of consumers of their consumption behavior was not very high, and some data needs can be identified. In addition, clear intentions can be detected among the residents to support the environment and to save energy. However, the consumers did not seem to be aware of the available data and existing services that could help them to improve their energy efficiency. Since no solutions have been proposed in Colombia that seek to reduce the consumption of electricity at the residential level, this paper describes the design and implementation of a simple prototype of a low-cost home energy management system (HEMS). The objective of this platform is to monitor the energy consumption of typical household devices so that users can access the consumption of each device separately and then establish the strategy that allows them to reduce energy consumption at home. In order to demonstrate that our system is viable, the system has been evaluated by measuring weekly energy consumption with the on-line and off-line HEMS using a test bench with typical household devices in a Sincelejo typical household. The evaluation has shown that with the installation of this HEMS, consumption is reduced by 27%. This shows that it is possible to achieve a good reduction percentage with a low-cost system. Due to the high share of industry in total electricity consumption, industrial demand-side management can make a relevant contribution to the stability of power systems. At the same time, companies get the opportunity to reduce their electricity procurement costs by taking advantage of increasingly fluctuating prices on short-term electricity markets, the provision of system services on balancing power markets, or by increasing the share of their own consumption from on-site generated renewable energy. Demand-side management requires the ability to react flexibly to the power supply situation without negatively affecting production targets. It also means that the management and operation of production must consider not only production-related parameters but also parameters of energy availability, which further increase the complexity of decision-making. Although simulation studies are a recognized tool for supporting decision-making processes in production and logistics, the simultaneous simulation of material and energy flows has so far been limited mainly to issues of energy efficiency as opposed to energy flexibility, where application-oriented experience is still limited. We assume that the consideration of energy flexibility in the simulation of manufacturing systems will amplify already known pitfalls in conducting simulation studies. Based on five representative industrial use cases, this article provides practitioners with application-oriented experiences of the coupling of energy and material flows in simulation modeling of energy-flexible manufacturing, identifies challenges in the simulation of energy-flexible production systems, and proposes approaches to face these challenges. Seven pitfalls that pose a particular challenge in simulating energy-flexible manufacturing have been identified, and possible solutions and measures for avoiding them are shown. It has been found that, among other things, consistent management of all parties involved, early clarification of energy-related, logistical, and resulting technical requirements for models and software, as well as the application of suitable methods for validation and verification are central to avoiding these pitfalls. The identification and characterization of challenges and the derivation of recommendations for coping with them can raise awareness of typical pitfalls. Energy-environmental planning for road transportation involves a vast investigation of vehicles' technologies and electricity production. However, in developing countries where the public transportation sector is growing quickly, energy-environmental planning is urgently needed. This paper evaluates the future electricity demand, as well as fuel consumption and CO2 emissions reduction, due to the operation of an expected increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan. The planning of EVs up to 2040 is performed with the ePop simulator that calculates the future EVs' electricity demand, while EnergyPLAN® assesses the expected new power capacities. Two scenarios are investigated by penetrating 30% and 90% of 2/3 electric wheelers and cars by 2030 and 2040 compared to 2020, respectively. To fulfill the expected energy demand, PV in the daytime and the national electric grid at nighttime are here considered. Finally, a 9 GW of PV capacity is needed to satisfy the EVs' electricity demand of 14.7 TWh/year, and a 0.7 GW power plants capacity is needed to fulfill 4.7 TWh/year by 2040. Consequently, EVs' charging scenarios at daytime and nighttime are assessed. Results indicated a total reduction of 10.4 Mtonnes of CO2 emissions and 9.1 Mtoe of fuel consumption by 2040 in the transportation sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses electricity consumption management in manufacturing enterprises. The research aims to provide manufacturing enterprises with an effective tool to control electricity costs. Recently, some factors have been observed to affect the rapid changes in the operating conditions of enterprises. These include the transformation of the power sector toward renewable energy, the disruption of supply chains resulting from a coronavirus pandemic, political crises, and process automation. A method for the analysis and management of electricity consumption in enterprises based on simulation modeling is proposed. The simulation model contains predefined objects representing physical system elements and the data processing algorithm. The production order execution time, energy consumption, employee overtime, and machine load are included in the model. The results show that it is possible to determine the level of power available for the process completion and its influence on the production volume and realization time. In the studied case, when the available power was reduced by half, there was an increase in order execution time of nearly 25 percent and an increase in energy consumption of nearly 15 percent. The residential sector is a major contributor to the global energy demand. The energy demand for the residential sector is expected to increase substantially in the next few decades. As the residential sector is responsible for almost 40% of overall electricity consumption, the demand response solution is considered the most effective and reliable solution to meet the growing energy demands. Home energy management systems (HEMSs) help manage the electricity demand to optimize energy consumption without compromising consumer comfort. HEMSs operate according to multiple criteria, including electricity cost, peak load reduction, consumer comfort, social welfare, environmental factors, etc. The residential appliance scheduling problem (RASP) is defined as the problem of scheduling household appliances in an efficient manner at appropriate periods with respect to dynamic pricing schemes and incentives provided by utilities. The objectives of RASP are to minimize electricity cost and peak load, maximize local energy generation and improve consumer comfort. To increase the effectiveness of demand response programs for smart homes, various demand-side management strategies are used to enable consumers to optimally manage their loads. This study lists out DSM techniques used in the literature for appliance scheduling. Most of these techniques aim at energy management in residential sectors to encourage users to schedule their power consumption in an effective manner. However, the performance of these techniques is rarely analyzed. Additionally, various factors, such as consumer comfort and dynamic pricing constraints, need to be incorporated. This work surveys most recent literature on residential household energy management, especially holistic solutions, and proposes new viewpoints on residential appliance scheduling in smart homes. Demographic factors, statistical information, and technological innovation are prominent factors shaping energy transitions in the residential sector. Explaining these energy transitions requires combining insights from the disciplines investigating these factors. The existing literature is not consistent in identifying these factors, nor in proposing how they can be combined. In this paper, three contributions are made by combining the key demographic factors of households to estimate household energy consumption. Firstly, a mathematical formula is developed by considering the demographic determinants that influence energy consumption, such as the number of persons per household, median age, occupancy rate, households with children, and number of bedrooms per household. Secondly, a geographical position algorithm is proposed to identify the geographical locations of households. Thirdly, the derived formula is validated by collecting demographic factors of five statistical regions from local government databases, and then compared with the electricity consumption benchmarks provided by the energy regulators. The practical feasibility of the method is demonstrated by comparing the estimated energy consumption values with the electricity consumption benchmarks provided by energy regulators. The comparison results indicate that the error between the benchmark and estimated values for the five different regions is less than 8% (7.37%), proving the efficacy of this method in energy consumption estimation processes. This paper aims to provide the smart grid research community with an open and accessible general mathematical framework to develop and implement optimal flexibility mechanisms in large-scale network applications. The motivation of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, flexibility mechanisms are currently a hot topic of research, which is aimed to mitigate variation and uncertainty of electricity demand and supply in decentralised grids with a high aggregated share of renewables. On the other hand, a large part of such related research is performed by heuristic methods, which are generally inefficient (such methods do not guarantee optimality) and difficult to extrapolate for different use cases. Alternatively, this paper presents an MPC-based (model predictive control) framework explicitly including a generic flexibility mechanism, which is easy to particularise to specific strategies such as demand response, flexible production and energy efficiency services. The proposed framework is benchmarked with other non-optimal control configurations to better show the advantages it provides. The work of this paper is completed by the implementation of a generic use case, which aims to further clarify the use of the framework and, thus, to ease its adoption by other researchers in their specific flexibility mechanism applications. This paper frames itself in the realm of smart energy technologies that can be utilized to satisfy the electricity demand of consumers. In this environment, demand response programs and the intelligent management of energy consumption that are offered by utility providers will play a significant role in implementing smart energy. One of the approaches to implementing smart energy is to analyze consumption data and provide targeted contracts to consumers based on their individual consumption characteristics. To that end, the identification of individual consumption features is important for suppliers and utilities. Given the complexity of smart home load profiles, an appliance-based identification is nearly impossible. In this paper, we propose a different approach by grouping appliances based on their rooms; thus, we provide a room-based identification of energy consumption. To this end, this paper presents and tests an intelligent consumption identification methodology, that can be implemented in the form of an ensemble of artificial intelligence tools. The ensemble, which comprises four convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and four k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms, is fed with smart submeter data and outputs the identified type of room in a given dwelling. Results obtained from real-world data exhibit the superiority of the ensemble, with respect to accuracy, as compared with individual CNN and KNN models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent decades, European countries have developed concepts, definitions, and construction technologies for Zero Energy Building (ZEB) that are effective and correspond to their specific climates. Latin American countries are still trying to find adequate solutions which respond to the local climatic, cultural, social, technical, and economic context. As such, this paper aims to establish the basis of the minimum energy efficiency and the renewable threshold for the definition of ZEB in order to better understand the application in Panama, based on assessing the energy regulations implemented in Panama. To achieve this aim, a review concentrated on the concept-definition and implementation adopted by Latin American countries is presented first before the paper converges into defining a framework for application in Panama. Finally, a case-study-based theoretical framework proposing a ZEB definition for Panama is discussed. The results of this study showed a net primary energy balance, of which the range falls into a plus energy building definition, indicating that all of the cases studied could supply their electricity needs using Photovoltaic generation. All dwellings studied have the potential to become a plus energy building, depending on the available roof surface area. Finally, a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis is presented in order to assess and support the introduction of such a ZEB definition and framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
