Carbon storage services play an important role in maintaining ecosystem stability. Land use/cover change (LUCC) is the main factor leading to changes in ecosystem carbon storage. Understanding the impact of LUCC on regional carbon storage changes is crucial for protecting regional ecosystems and promoting sustainable socio-economic development. This paper selects Shanxi province as the study area and explores the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of carbon storage in Shanxi province based on the InVEST model and univariate spatial autocorrelation. The results show that the total carbon storage in Shanxi Province in 2000, 2010, and 2020 is 513.51 × 104 t C, 513.46 × 104 t C, and 509.29 × 104 t C, respectively. High carbon storage areas are distributed in forest and grassland land types, while low carbon storage areas are widely distributed in building land in urban metropolitan areas. Shanxi Province is mainly dominated by farmland, which has decreased by 3448.60 km2 in the past 20 years. Grassland has decreased by 1588.31 km2 and the area of building land has increased by 4205.73 km2. Due to the influence of carbon conversion among different land use types, the total carbon storage loss of Shanxi Province in the past 20 years was 4.21 × 104 t C. The transfer of farmland resulted in an increase in carbon stock of 14.46 × 104 t C. The transfer of grassland resulted in an increase of 17.15 × 104 t C, while the transfer of forest resulted in a decrease of 41.44 × 104 t C. The increase in land use types with low carbon density and the decrease in land use types with high carbon density led to the decrease in carbon storage in Shanxi Province. Furthermore, social factors were more likely to influence the carbon storage than natural factors, and the influence of social factors was often negative. On this basis, regional development countermeasures were proposed for the current situation of carbon storage in Shanxi Province and provide a scientific basis for Shanxi Province to achieve the carbon neutrality target. Under the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goal, Shanxi Province adjusts the power supply structure and promotes the development of a high proportion of new energy, which has a certain impact on the demand for thermal coal. Therefore, constructing a reasonable forecasting model for thermal coal demand can play a role in stabilizing coal supply and demand. This paper analyzes various factors related to coal demand, and uses Pearson coefficient to screen out six variables with strong correlation. Then, based on the scenario analysis method, combined with the "14th Five-Year Plan" of Shanxi Province, different scenarios of economic development and carbon emission reduction development are set. Finally, a multi-scenario GA–LSSVM forecasting model of thermal coal demand in Shanxi Province is constructed, and the future development trend of thermal coal demand in Shanxi Province is predicted. The results show that the demand for thermal coal is the largest in the mode of high-speed economic development and low emission reduction, and the demand for thermal coal is the lowest in the mode of low-speed economic development and strong emission reduction, which provides a scientific basis for the implementation of Shanxi Province's thermal coal supply policy. To address the severity of the wind and light abandonment problem and the economics of hydrogen energy production and operation, this paper explores the problem of multi-cycle resource allocation optimization of hydrogen storage systems for coal–wind–solar power generation. In view of the seriousness of the problem of abandoning wind and photovoltaic power and the economy of hydrogen production and operation, the node selection and scale setting issues for hydrogen production and storage, as well as decision-making problems such as the capacity of new transmission lines and new pipelines and route planning, are studied. This research takes the satisfaction of energy supply as the basic constraint and constructs a multi-cycle resource allocation optimization model for an integrated energy system, aiming to achieve the maximum benefit of the whole system. Using data from Inner Mongolia, where wind abandonment and power limitation are severe, and Beijing and Shanxi provinces, where hydrogen demand is high, this paper analyzes the benefits of the hydrogen storage system for coal–wind–solar power generation, and explores the impact of national subsidy policies and technological advances on system economics. Solar energy is considered one of the most hopeful alternative sources to avoiding dependence on fossil fuels, and it does not cause any air pollution. GIS-based solar energy potential evaluation is mainly focused on regional scale; further, more solar energy potential evaluation with building scale is calculated through observation data and mathematical model. Therefore, in this paper, a GIS-based joint solar energy potential evaluation is developed to evaluate the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential. Shanxi province in China, which has abundant coal resources, is used as the study area. The raster grid scale is used as the minimum research scale, which could not only deal with the distributed photovoltaic potential but could also calculate the centralized photovoltaic potential. The obtained results indicate that the developed method could effectively deal with problems associated with the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential in the raster grid scale. As an important energy base in China, Shanxi Province, in its economic development, has depended heavily on coal resources. However, enormous coal consumption produces a large amount of carbon dioxide and an aggravated ecological problem. In this paper, the super efficiency slack-based measure and data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) model and Malmquist index were used to calculate the energy consumption and carbon emission efficiency of 11 prefecture-level cities in Shanxi in the period from 2000 to 2020. The results were as follows: (1) The primary form of energy consumption in Shanxi Province is the burning of coal, and the carbon emission efficiencies of the 11 prefecture-level cities are quite different. The technical efficiency, technological progress, and total factor productivity of Taiyuan and Shuozhou were found to be greater than 1 compared to other cities in Shanxi. (2) On the whole, although the carbon emission rate of Shanxi Province has slowed down, it still faces the problems of a large total emission base, high carbon emission intensity, and low efficiency of the unit carbon emission output. Industrial structure is the key factor restricting improvements in the efficiency of carbon emissions in Shanxi Province. (3) From the spatial and temporal evolution of the carbon emission efficiency in Shanxi Province, we can see that the carbon emission efficiency of the whole province gradually dispersed and improved from the central and northern regions to the southern regions during the period of 2000–2020. In order to achieve a low-carbon economy, Shanxi Province must optimize its industrial structure, accelerate research and development in low-carbon technologies, adjust the energy structure, and promote the construction of an energy supply system with clean low-carbon energy as the main source. To address the support difficulties caused by the dynamic pressure from the adjacent working face in gob-side entry driving, this study, taking the 8103 working face of the Jinhuagong Coal Mine in Shanxi Province as an example, adopted methods such as theoretical analysis, physical experiments, numerical simulations, and field practices to explore roof-cutting and pressure-relieving techniques to control the surrounding rocks in gob-side entry driving with small coal pillars under dynamic pressure. Fractures of the lateral roof, stresses on the surrounding rock, and deformations with different cutting-roof parameters were analyzed to determine the reasonable parameters for applications. The following results have been obtained. The longer the lateral cantilever length of the roof, the greater the load borne by the surrounding rock. Therefore, the key to reducing the confining pressure in a roadway is reducing the lateral cantilever length of the roof. After roof cutting, the roof of the gob area collapsed more completely. The stress on both sides of the coal pillar and that on the ribs of the solid coal dropped by 7.72 MPa and 4.16 MPa, respectively. The key roof-cutting parameters were analyzed by the UDEC numerical software, and the reasonable roof-cutting angle and height were determined to be 12° and 14 m. A support scheme combining "steel strip + bolt + anchor cable + roof cutting" was proposed. With the scheme applied, the displacement of both sides of the coal pillar was 61 mm shorter than that in the non-test section, and the duration in which the roadway was affected by mining was 11 days shorter. Therefore, the rationality of the selected roof-cutting and support parameters in this study is verified. As a key state parameter of high-voltage cables, conductor temperature is an essential determinant of the current carrying capacity of cables, but in practice, this is difficult to measure directly during the operation of high-voltage cables. In this paper, the electromagnetic-thermal coupling analysis model of a 110 kV high-voltage cable is established using the finite element analysis software COMSOL. By analyzing the temperature distribution law of high-voltage cables under different load currents and ambient temperatures, the relationship between the change in the high-voltage cable surface temperature and the conductor temperature is deduced, which allows the monitoring of the high-voltage cable conductor temperature. Taking the 110 kV cable of the Yanzhong line in Shanxi Province as an example and using the electromagnetic-thermal coupling temperature field analysis method, the conductor temperature of the high-voltage cable can be measured using the data obtained from the cable surface temperature, which is measured by the self-developed Raman Distributed Temperature Sensor (RDTS) system with a maximum measurement error of about 2 °C. The unique structure and physical properties of perovskite-type catalysts make them highly promising for catalyzing efficient coal combustion. Mesoporous perovskite LaNixFe1−xO3 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) coal combustion catalysts were synthesized using the sol–gel method. The effects of the doping amount of B-site doped nickel on both the crystal structure and catalytic performance were investigated. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption tests were used to characterize the catalyst samples. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and activation energy (Ea) calculations were used to assess the catalyst's activity for the catalytic combustion of anthracite coal (JF coal, originating from Shanxi, China). Results revealed that nickel doping created lattice distortion and Ni-Fe alloy interactions. The difference in nickel doping significantly affects the morphology and catalytic activity of perovskite. The addition of LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3 (NI6) with a mass fraction of 5% resulted in the highest average burning rate value (va = 4.52%/min) of JF coal among all synthesized catalysts. The Ea of JF coal catalytic combustion, calculated using the Coats–Redfern method and the Doyle method, showed a good agreement with the TG curves. The LaNixFe1-xO3 series catalysts were found to significantly decrease the Ea of JF coal combustion, with a maximum reduction of 42% compared to the case without any catalyst added. Among the synthesized catalysts, NI6 exhibited a favorable catalytic combustion performance and is thus a promising candidate for the clean and efficient utilization of coal resources. With the majority of coal mines in uncovered and semi-covered coal strata now explored and developed, most of the undiscovered coal-bearing strata are concealed. Compared with expensive drilling, deep targets such as concealed coal-bearing strata can be more efficiently and cost-effectively discovered through geophysical methods. We designed an integrated geophysical exploration approach to detect coal-bearing strata in the Yangjiazhangzi (YJZZ) area. Large-scale magnetotellurics (MT) is used to describe the geological structure along with its profile through the YJZZ area. An aeromagnetic survey was used to delineate the spatial distribution characteristics of the YJZZ syncline, a coal-bearing prospect tectonic unit. Localized exploration with controlled-source audio magnetotellurics (CSAMT) and MT reveals coal-bearing targets for drilling. Drilling results verified the targets identified through the integrated geophysical approach. Coal-bearing strata in the Benxi formation, the Taiyuan formation, and the Shanxi formation of the Permo-Carboniferous age are found between 630 and 770 m. This case study demonstrates that the multidisciplinary geophysical strategy can provide reliable results and credible data interpretation for deep coal seam resources exploration. Energy supply bases (ESBs) are vital regions, intended to satisfy global energy demands and secure global energy supplies, which provide large amounts of energy products to their host countries (and even the world through trade). However, due to long-term dependency on energy trade, ESBs are facing the dual pressure of reaching emission reduction targets and securing energy supplies and have become one of the main obstacles for host countries trying to reach emission reduction targets. (1) Methods: We used the EEBT model, SDA model, and CR model to explore the spatio-temporal features and mechanisms of embodied carbon emissions in inter-provincial trade (ECEs-PT) in Shanxi. (2) Results: The spatio-temporal development characteristic of net ECEs-PT outflow in Shanxi is "from expanded coverage to enhanced agglomeration". A total of 98% of the net ECEs-PT is highly concentrated in coal mining and washing (Coalmin), metal smelting and rolling processing (MetalSmelt) and petroleum processing, coking, and nuclear fuel processing (RefPetraol). Moreover, the ECEs-PT driving forces were technology, structure, and scale. While trade expands, the pressure of CEs reduction is increasing. We discussed optimization for different types of sectors. Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion technology is the second generation of oxy-fuel combustion technology and has low energy consumption and low cost. In this research, a visual pressurized flat-flame reaction system was designed. A particle-tracking image pyrometer (PTIP) system based on a high-speed camera and an SLR camera was proposed. Combining the experimental system and data-processing method developed, the ignition and combustion characteristics of a single coal particle between 69 and 133 μm in size were investigated. The results indicated that at atmospheric pressure, the ignition delay time of ShanXi (SX) anthracite coal was longer than that of ShenHua (SH) bituminous coal, while that of PRB sub-bituminous coal was the shortest. As the pressure rose, the ignition delay time of the PRB sub-bituminous coal and SX anthracite coal showed a continuous increasing trend, while the ignition delay time of SH bituminous coal showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. Moreover, pressure also affects the pyrolysis process of coal. As the pressure increases, it became more difficult to release the volatiles produced by coal pyrolysis, which reduced the release rate of volatiles during the ignition stage, and prolonged the release time and burning duration time of volatiles. This study provides empirical evidence of the impact of recentralized governance on environmental performance by examining the implementation of a clean heating transition. It investigated the impact of a centralized clean heating transition on sulfur dioxide (SO2) levels in Shanxi province from January 2015 to March 2021. Using a difference-in-differences approach, this study found that the centralized clean heating transition led to a significant improvement in air quality; however, the excessive response of Shanxi province prevented adequate heating supply for residents. As a result, the Chinese government had to reverse its initial plans for a coal ban and the promotion of gas plants. This outcome implies that recentralization cannot control the autonomy of local governments in responding to and achieving the central targets, even though it may provide incentives to prioritize environmental issues. Numerous room-and-pillar mining goaf are apparent in western China due to increasing small coal mining activities, which causes the collapse of the overlying coal pillars and the occurrence of strong ground pressure on the longwall face and surface subsidence. In this study, Yuanbao Bay Coal Mine, Shuozhou, Shanxi, was selected to study the collapse of the overlying coal pillars on the longwall face and reveal the mechanism of the pillar collapse and the disaster-causing mechanism caused by strong ground pressure. Results show that the dynamic collapse process of coal pillars is relatively complicated. First, the coal pillars on both sides of the goaf are destroyed and destabilized, followed by the adjacent coal pillars, which eventually cause a large-scale collapse of the coal pillars. This results in a large-scale cut-off movement of the overlying strata, and the large impact load that acts on the longwall face causes an unmovable longwall face support. Moreover, the roof weighting is severe when strong ground pressure occurs on the longwall face, causing local support jammed accidents. Furthermore, the data of each measurement point of the strata movement inside the ground borehole significantly increases, and the position of the borescope peeping error holes in the ground drill hole rise steeply. The range of movement of the overlying strata increases instantaneously, and the entire strata begin to move. Mercury (Hg) is a toxic trace element emitted from coal conversion and utilization. Samples with different coal ranks and gangue from Ningwu Coalfield are selected and investigated in this study. For understanding dependence of mercury distribution characteristics on coalification degree, Pearson regression analysis coupled with Spearman rank correlation is employed to explore the relationship between mercury and sulfur, mercury and ash in coal, and sequential chemical extraction method is adopted to recognize the Hg speciation in the samples of coal and gangue. The measured results show that Hg is positively related to total sulfur content in coal and the affinity of Hg to different sulfur forms varies with the coalification degree. Organic sulfur has the biggest impact on Hg in peat, which becomes weak with increasing the coalification degree from lignite to bituminous coal. Sulfate sulfur is only related to Hg in peat or lignite as little content in coal. However, the Pearson linear correlation coefficients of Hg and pyritic sulfur are relatively high with 0.479 for lignite, 0.709 for sub-bituminous coal and 0.887 for bituminous coal. Hg is also related to ash content in coal, whose Pearson linear correlation coefficients are 0.504, 0.774 and 0.827 respectively, in lignite, sub-bituminous coal and bituminous coal. Furthermore, Hg distribution is directly depended on own speciation in coal. The total proportion of F2 + F3 + F4 is increased from 41.5% in peat to 87.4% in bituminous coal, but the average proportion of F5 is decreased from 56.8% in peat to 12.4% in bituminous coal. The above findings imply that both Hg and sulfur enrich in coal largely due to the migration from organic state to inorganic state with the increase of coalification degree in Ningwu Coalfield. The combination of coal precise mining and information technology in the new century is one of the important directions for the future development of coal mining. Taking the fully mechanized top coal caving condition of a thick coal seam in the 90,101 working face of Baoshan Yujing Coal Mine in Shanyin City, Shanxi Province as an example, the intelligent identification method of section coal pillar stability was studied. The load transfer law of overlying strata in the upper part of coal pillar was analyzed, and the coal pillar values of each index were obtained by using an empirical formula, mean impact value-genetic algorithm-BP neural network (MIV-GA-BP) simulation experiment, and finite difference algorithm. The Delphi index evaluation system was used to calculate the optimal value of the coal pillar. The results showed that the non-contact cantilevered triangle on the two wings of the coal pillar in the goaf reduced the stress on the coal pillar; according to the width of the coal pillar at 10 m, 14 m, 16 m, and 20 m, combined with the relationship between the plastic zone and the core zone of coal pillar, and the relationship between the stress field and the ultimate strength of coal pillar, the numerical simulation value of the coal pillar was determined. The MIV (mean impact value) characteristics screened out the influencing factors of coal pillar width in the section near the horizontal fully mechanized top coal caving face order of importance; the relative error between the predicted value and the expected value of the MIV-GA-BP simulation experiment was less than 5%, which has good stability for the multi-factor nonlinear coupling prediction problem; and the optimal value of the coal pillar was 16.03 m by the intelligent identification method of the coal pillar. When the 16 m pillar was used, the surrounding rock deformation of the roadway was small, and the control effect was good. The uncertainties between reservoir quality and gas migration and accumulation in tight sandstone gas reservoirs are intrinsically attributed to complex microscopic pore structures. Integrated analysis including the physical simulation experiment of gas migration and accumulation, X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), and casting thin section (CTS) were conducted on core plug samples collected from the Upper Paleozoic Permian Lower Shihezi and Shanxi tight sandstone of the Daniudi area in the Ordos Basin to investigate the impacts of pore structure on the gas migration and accumulation. Physical simulation suggested that the gas flows in migration in tight sandstone reservoirs were characterized by deviated-Darcy linear flow and non-linear flow regimes. Minimum and stable migration pressure square gradients determined by application of apparent permeability were employed as key parameters to describe gas flow. Pore structure characterization revealed that the tight sandstone reservoir was characterized by wide pore and throat size distributions and poor pore-throat connectivity. The pore–throat combinations could be divided into three types, including the macropore and coarse throat dominant reservoir, full-pore and full-throat form, and meso-small pore and fine throat dominant form. Comparative analyses indicated that pore and throat radii determined the gas flow regimes by controlling the minimum and stable migration pressure gradients. Gas accumulation capacity was dominated by the connected effective porosity, and the gas accumulation process was controlled by the cumulative effective porosity contribution from macropores to micropores. Variations in pore structures resulted in differences in gas migration and accumulation of tight sandstone reservoirs. The macropore and coarse throat-dominant and the full-pore and full-throat reservoirs exhibited greater gas migration and accumulation potentials than the small pore and fine throat dominate form.
