Energy efficiency plays an important role in energy systems all over the world, representing the most available and cheapest source of energy. Progress in energy efficiency translates into reduced consumption, reduced dependency on external suppliers of fossil fuels, mitigation of climate change, and improvement of quality of life. Given its tremendous importance for energy systems and national economies, this paper aims to offer salient insights on the performance of the countries of the European Union (EU-27) towards an energy-efficient future, bearing in mind the quantitative milestones of sustainable development goal 7 (SDG7) of the Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations. The current research offers a new perspective and delivers a comprehensive, robust, and succinct model which provides insights on the performance of EU-27 member states based on appropriate quantitative key performance indicators related to energy efficiency. The results show that about 19% of EU-27 member states are in a leading position, while about 41% of EU-27 member states have modest performance, and about 14% are still lagging. The findings of this paper may open discussions to find better ways to valorise energy efficiency, and may offer support for legislators and other stakeholders in energy systems. Moreover, by benchmarking different types of national practices, the countries which are still struggling to use energy-efficiency measures may find suitable ways to accelerate transition to a more energy-efficient future. The paper evaluates the rural development (RD) contribution of local economic activities (LEAs), whether generated or affected by the proximity of renewable energy plants (REPs). The study also informs about LEAs' role as co-players in the fight against climate change. Semi-structured research interviews have been applied to identify LEAs' BM (business model) in Andalusia, Murcia, and Catalonia, autonomous communities of Spain. Most LEAs present a BM based on the RE plant, and others do not, but they still contribute to RD, rural communities' well-being and global sustainability. Results show, first, that certain LEAs, due to their inter-connection with large REPs, can innovate and create a significant number of stable jobs. Second, land leasing to REPs allows for temporary farms' diversification, which is conditioned to its bargaining power. Third, advice on integration RE projects in RD strategies should be provided. The motive for the functioning of enterprises in the market economy is the maximization of benefits by achieving positive financial results with the minimum possible involvement of capital. The positive results achieved are perceived very positively by the stakeholders. To achieve this, it is necessary to carry out reorganization processes (mergers and acquisitions) within capital groups, which are perceived as necessary (positive) measures. These phenomena have been observed in the energy sector for many years, and the years 2010–2021 were adopted as the research period. The aim of this article is to attempt to answer the question of whether the multi-energy concern is the result of activities carried out in light of the 2030 Agenda. The effect of merging the entities is capital concentration. This fact has been verified by reviewing changes in the structures of capital groups in the energy sector against the background of the largest mergers and acquisitions in Poland in terms of value. The theoretical part presents the differences in the terminology of mergers and acquisitions and the motives for their creation and operation, with an emphasis on energy groups. Therefore, the authors undertook research aimed at identifying and assessing the main premises and effects of capital concentration through mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector in Poland. The contribution of the energy sector to human development (HD) is one of the aspects that requires measuring growth of the overall sustainability of HD. The UN program, Agenda 2030, has defined the vision of advanced development by introducing a sustainable HD paradigm, the balanced integrated development paradigm, in three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. The overall performance of countries is not currently assessed; there are several proposals for measuring sustainable HD level, but none have become widely accepted due to their weaknesses. The selected indirect measurement method reflects the interlinkage of development dimensions in real cases of low data availability. By combining the strengths of existing proposals and eliminating their weaknesses, the measuring methodology has been created and an appropriate tool—the Advanced Human Development Index (AHDI)—has been designed, which ensures unity and concordance of all included comprehensive dimension indices. The calculations confirm the accuracy and simplicity of the measurement. The proposed methodology and AHDI, as a simple, balanced index that is based on result-oriented headline indices, provide the big picture, which will be transparent, acceptable and usable for experts, politicians and the global community to assess the achieved development levels and to make strategic decisions for the coming period.
