Low or even zero carbon dioxide emissions will be an essential requirement for energy supplies in the near future. Besides transport and electricity generation, industry is another large carbon emitter. Hydrogen produced by renewable energy provides a flexible way of utilizing that energy. Hydrogen, as an energy carrier, could be stored in a large capacity compared to electricity. In Sweden, hydrogen will be used to replace coal for steel production. This paper discusses how the need for electricity to produce hydrogen will affect the electricity supply and power flow in the Swedish power grid, and whether it will result in increased emissions in other regions. Data of the Swedish system will be used to study the feasibility of implementing the hydrogen system from the power system viewpoint, and discuss the electricity price and emission issues caused by the hydrogen production in different scenarios. This paper concludes that the Swedish power grid is feasible for accommodating the additional electricity capacity requirement of producing green hydrogen for the steel industry. Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) are intended to improve the range of battery electric vehicles and thus eliminate drivers' concerns about running out of energy before reaching the desired destination. This paper gives an insight into EREV's performance operating according to the proposed control strategy over various driving cycles, including the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Test Cycle Class 3b (WLTC 3b), Federal Test Procedure (FTP-75), and China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC-P). Simulation runs were performed in Matlab-Simulink® for different cases of drive range, electricity mix, and vehicle mass. The control strategy goal was to aim at a specified value of battery state of charge at the targeted range value. The obtained test results included: pure electric drive range, acceleration times, EREV range tests, control strategy range errors, Range Extender (REX) utilization metric and distribution of its engagement instances, fuel consumption, total equivalent CO2 emission, powertrain efficiency, and specific energy consumption. The control strategy operated on average with a range error of −1.04% and a range mean square error of 2.13%. Fuel consumption (in range extension mode) varied between 1.37 dm3/100 km (FTP-75) and 6.85 dm3/100 km (WLTC 3b Extra-High 3). CO2eq emission was 95.3–244.2 g/km for Poland, 31.0–160.5 g/km for EU-27, and 1.2–147.6 g/km for Sweden. This paper introduces a new concept of comparative carbon advantage as a potential climate mitigation tool. According to the concept, welfare gains in terms of reduced global CO2 emissions can be achieved by exploiting cross-country sectoral differences in carbon intensity and decarbonized electricity system. The paper empirically tests the concept by utilizing annual data of Sweden between 1995 and 2008. Overall, the results show that Sweden contributed nearly 590 million tons of potential CO2 emissions savings through its exports by having an efficient and low-carbon production and electricity system. This total amount of 590 million tons of CO2 emissions relates to the total savings made if the same amount and composition of Swedish exports was produced using the world average technology. Furthermore, the contribution of Sweden's low carbon electricity generation was over 34% of the total savings, of which some 20% were direct exports of electricity and 80% was electricity embodied in exported products. This research provides a critical understanding of the impact of efficient production and low carbon electricity in generating relative comparative carbon advantage—a policy relevant aspect for the increasingly globalized, and carbon-constrained, world. Carbon emissions significantly contribute to global warming, amplifying the occurrence of extreme weather events and negatively impacting the overall environmental transformation. In line with the global commitment to combat climate change through the Paris Agreement (COP21), the European Union (EU) has formulated strategies aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050. To achieve this goal, EU member states focus on developing long-term national strategies (NLTSs) and implementing local plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in alignment with EU objectives. This study focuses on the case of Sweden and aims to introduce a comprehensive data-driven framework that predicts CO2 emissions by using a diverse range of input features. Considering the scarcity of data points, we present a refined variation of multi-task learning (MTL) called weighted multi-task learning (WMTL). The findings demonstrate the superior performance of the WMTL model in terms of accuracy, robustness, and computation cost of training compared to both the basic model and MTL model. The WMTL model achieved an average mean squared error (MSE) of 0.12 across folds, thus outperforming the MTL model's 0.15 MSE and the basic model's 0.21 MSE. Furthermore, the computational cost of training the new model is only 20% of the cost required by the other two models. The findings from the interpretation of the WMTL model indicate that it is a promising tool for developing data-driven decision-support tools to identify strategic actions with substantial impacts on the mitigation of CO2 emissions. Transport of ore and overburden in open-pit mines is often performed with large haul trucks. Battery-electric operation of haul trucks can significantly reduce the CO 2 emissions and the fossil fuel dependence of open-pit mining. This simulation study investigates the feasibility and economy of operating large haul trucks battery-electrically, charging from an electric road system in the form of overhead trolley lines. The used simulation model is verified against measurements on diesel-electric haul trucks in normal operation. The simulation model is then tested with five drive cycles representing typical operations in the Aitik copper mine in northern Sweden. This simulation study shows that battery-electric operation with an electric road is feasible. It is shown that battery-electric operation is much cheaper than diesel-electric operation under reasonable assumptions. Studies of carbon emissions typically focus on price and tax effects or technology. We argue that the two are closely linked within an economy in disequilibrium. Our goals are twofold: (1) to examine the combined role of: low CO2 technology, fuel taxes and CO2 tax on taming CO2 emissions and (2) to build a counterfactual analysis by capturing anything else that causes emissions to diverge from the trend such as renewable energy, energy laws and the state of the economy. The equilibrium correction model (EqCM) suggests that emissions have a long-term relationship with economic growth, fossil fuel use, taxes and clean power sources. Both oil and gas extraction and economic growth raise Norway's emissions, offsetting the mitigating effect of taxes. Sweden´s carbon fuel tax elasticity is 20%, a value far above Norway´s elasticity, even though these carbon taxes were phased-in under a period of macroeconomic instability, weakening their effectiveness. The income elasticity of emissions is negative for Norway and positive for Sweden. Emission cuts require (a) de-growth, (b) a higher tax on transport fuels and (c) electrification of transport. The effects of tax, technology, economic growth and those for the pre- and post-carbon tax era differ strongly in the two nations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
