In this paper, a heat generator with fluid agitation is developed and experimentally studied. This heat generator can convert kinetic energy from a wind turbine directly to thermal energy through the process of viscous dissipation—a process achieved through the agitation of the working fluid inside a container. In the experimental study, an electric motor (instead of a wind turbine) was used to provide the kinetic energy input to the heat generator. The torque, rotational speed, and temperature rise in the fluid were measured. Using the measured quantities, the efficiency of kinetic energy to sensible heat conversion was calculated. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different impellers, rotational speeds, and working fluids, including distilled water, ethylene glycol (EG), and their respective nanofluids, with A l 2 O 3 nanoparticles at different concentrations. The study also found that the temperature rise in fluids due to viscous dissipation was influenced by the specific heat of the fluid, suggesting that the heat generator can be optimized for energy storage with high-specific-heat fluids, such as water, or for achieving a higher temperature rise with low-specific-heat fluids, such as ethylene glycol. The experimental results indicated that the heat generator was up to 90% efficient in converting kinetic energy to thermal energy. The study revealed that, for constant power input, the heat dissipation rate depends solely on the vessel's geometry, not the fluid properties. Optimizing the impeller design and baffles within the vessel is crucial for maximizing power input. Natural gas hydrate (NGH) is a potential future energy resource. More than 90% of NGH resources exist in the pore medium of seafloor sediments. During the development of deep-sea oil and gas fields, wellbore pipelines are often clogged due to the synthesis of gas hydrates, and the addition of thermodynamic inhibitors is a common solution to prevent hydrate synthesis. In this paper, the effects of two single inhibitors, sodium chloride and ethylene glycol, as well as hybrid inhibitors combining these two inhibitors on the synthesis of methane hydrates were investigated using the self-developed one-dimensional gas hydrate exploitation simulation test apparatus. The effects of single and hybrid inhibitors were investigated in terms of the hydrate synthesis volume and gas–water two-phase conversion rate. The results show that the hybrid inhibitor has a better inhibitory effect on hydrate synthesis with the same initial synthesis driving force. When the concentration of inhibitors is low, salt inhibitors can have a better inhibitory effect than alcohol inhibitors. However, in the mixed inhibitor experiment, increasing the proportion of ethylene glycol in the mixed inhibitor can more effectively inhibit the synthesis of hydrates than increasing the proportion of sodium chloride in the mixed inhibitor. Solar concentrator collectors have the potential of meeting the medium- and high-temperature thermal energy demands of the world. A heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a vital component of a concentrating system to transfer and store thermal energy. This paper presents the design development of a solar paraboloidal dish concentrator (SPDC) and a study of selected HTFs using the storage receiver system of the concentrator. The locally designed SPDC (diameter 1.21 m and height 0.20 m) has features like light weight, effortless tracking, convenient transportation along with high optical and thermal performance. Three HTFs, silicone oil (SO), engine oil (EO) and ethylene glycol (EG), are selected based on their favorable properties for medium temperature (150–300 °C) applications. The characteristic parameters of HTFs, heating rate (Rh), instant thermal efficiency (ηith) and the overall heat loss coefficient (UL), are illustrated and determined experimentally. A new characteristic parameter, the normalized maximum fluid temperature (Tnf), is also introduced in the paper. In the heating test, the maximum attained temperatures by fluids, SO, EO and EG are found to be 240 °C, 180 °C and 160 °C, respectively. The thermal efficiencies of SO, EO and EG are determined to be 45, 36 and 31%, respectively. The heating rate of 6.56 °C/s is found to be the maximum for SO. Through the cooling test, the overall heat loss coefficient (UL) is computed to be 14 W/mK, which is the least among the three fluids compared. The high thermal performance, environmental safety and chemical stability of silicone oil make it suitable for use in concentrators for medium-temperature heat transfer and storage applications. The current paper proposes a novel multi-generation system, integrated with compound parabolic collectors and a biomass combustor. In addition to analyzing the comprehensive system in a steady state, the feasibility of using nanofluids as heat transfer fluids in the solar cycle and their effect on the overall performance of the system was studied. The multi-generation system is generally designed for generating electricity, cooling, freshwater, drying, hot water, and hydrogen, with the help of six subsystems. These include a double stage refrigeration system, an organic Rankine cycle, a steam Rankine cycle, a dryer, a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, and a multistage flash distillation system. Two types of nanoparticles (graphene, silver), which have various high-quality properties when used within ethylene glycol, were chosen as absorbing fluids in the solar cycle. The performance parameters of the base case thermodynamic analysis and some of the variable parameters were calculated, and their effect on system performance was determined. According to the results, a spike in solar irradiation, ambient temperature, output temperature of biomass combustor and nanofluids' concentration positively affected the overall system performance. In the current paper, a novel technique is represented to control the liquid petrochemical and petroleum products passing through a transmitting pipe. A simulation setup, including an X-ray tube, a detector, and a pipe, was conducted by Monte Carlo N Particle-X version (MCNPX) code to examine a two-by-two mixture of four diverse petroleum products (ethylene glycol, crude oil, gasoline, and gasoil) in various volumetric ratios. As the feature extraction system, twelve time characteristics were extracted from the received signal, and the most effective ones were selected using correlation analysis to present reasonable inputs for neural network training. Three Multilayers perceptron (MLP) neural networks were applied to indicate the volume ratio of three kinds of petroleum products, and the volume ratio of the fourth product can be feasibly achieved through the results of the three aforementioned networks. In this study, increasing accuracy was placed on the agenda, and an RMSE < 1.21 indicates this high accuracy. Increasing the accuracy of predicting volume ratio, which is due to the use of appropriate characteristics as the neural network input, is the most important innovation in this study, which is why the proposed system can be used as an efficient method in the oil industry. Currently; the transfer of new technologies makes it necessary to also control heat transfer in different industrial processes—both in practical and research—applications. Not so long ago water and ethylene glycol were the most frequently used media in heat transfer. However, due to their relatively low thermal conductivity, they cannot provide the fast and effective heat transfer necessary in modern equipment. To improve the heat transfer rate different additives to the base liquid are sought, e.g., nanoadditives that create mono and hybrid nanofluids with very high thermal conductivity. The number of scientific studies and publications concerning hybrid nanofluids is growing, although they still represent a small percentage of all papers on nanofluids (in 2013 it was only 0.6%, and in 2017—ca. 3%). The most important point of this paper is to discuss different ways of stabilizing nanofluids, which seems to be one of the most challenging tasks in nanofluid treatment. Other future challenges concerning mono and hybrid nanofluids are also thoroughly discussed. Moreover, a quality assessment of nanofluid preparation is also presented. Because of its potential to directly transform solar energy into heat and energy, without harmful environmental effects such as greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid nanofluid is an efficient way to improve the thermal efficiency of solar systems using a possible heat transfer fluid with superior thermo-physical properties. The object of this paper is the study the latest developments in hybrid applications in the fields of solar energy systems in different solar collectors. Hybrid nanofluids are potential fluids with better thermo-physical properties and heat transfer efficiency than conventional heat transfer fluids (oil, water, ethylene glycol) with single nanoparticle nanofluids. The research found that a single nanofluid can be replaced by a hybrid nanofluid because it enhances heat transfer. This work presented the recent developments in hybrid nanofluid preparation methods, stability factors, thermal improvement methods, current applications, and some mathematical regression analysis which is directly related to the efficiency enhancement of solar collector. This literature revealed that hybrid nanofluids have a great opportunity to enhance the efficiency of solar collector due to their noble thermophysical properties in replace of conventional heat transfer working fluids. The paper presents the investigation of a prototype cold accumulator using water–ice latent heat for the cold storage process. The concept of the cold accumulator was based on a 200-L-capacity cylindrical storage tank in which spherical capsules filled with water were placed. Beds of polypropylene capsules with diameters of 80 mm, 70 mm, and 60 mm were used in the tests. The cold accumulator operated with a water–air heat pump. Based on the test results, the following parameters were calculated: the cooling capacity, cooling power, energy efficiency of the cold storage, and energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the accumulator. The obtained measurement results were described with mathematical relationships (allowing for measurement error) using criterial numbers and the developed "Research Stand Factor Number" (RSFN) index. It has been found that, for the prototype cold accumulator under investigation, the maximum values of the cooling capacity (17 kWh or 85.3 kWh per cubic meter of the accumulator), energy efficiency (0.99), and EER (4.8) occur for an RSFN of 144 · 10 − 4 . The optimal conditions for the operation of the prototype cold accumulator were the closest to laboratory tests conducted for a bed with capsules with a diameter of 70 mm and a mass flow of the water–glycol mixture flowing between the accumulator and the heat pump of 0.084 kg/s. Glycol dehydration is the most common and economical water removal method from natural gas streams. However, dehydration of low-pressure natural gas requires the use of higher concentration TEG (Triethylene Glycol) or TREG (Tetraethylene Glycol). This article describes how the ejector can be used to create a vacuum in the glycol reboiler to achieve a higher concentration of L-TEG/L-TREG (Lean Triethylene Glycol/Lean Tetraethylene Glycol). Process simulations of the gas dehydration and glycol regeneration units were carried out in Chemcad software. Simulations were performed for decreasing values of gas working pressure and TEG/TREG regeneration pressures. Dehydration unit efficiency was tested for two values of glycol flow rates. Ejector performance simulations were executed for two positions in the process flow line. The influence of pressure reduction in the glycol reboiler on the concentration of L-TEG/L-TREG and the water dewpoint of natural gas has to be found significant. The increase in glycol flow rate has a greater impact on TREG than for TEG. Creating a vacuum with an ejector in a TEG/TREG reboiler has been shown to be an attractive way to improve the efficiency of natural gas dehydration. Currently, great importance has been assigned to designing cutting-edge materials for oxygen and hydrogen generation from hybrid water electrolysis as an ideal fuel alternative in energy-conversion devices. This work reports on the electrochemical organic molecule oxidation in alkaline media, intending to promote water electrolysis at early onset potential with more current densities using Sn-Cu oxidized heterostructures. The electrocatalysts were easily and rapidly synthesized by the microwave-heated synthesis process in the presence of a small quantity of ethylene glycol. The X-ray diffraction and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses confirm the presence of CuO and SnO2 phases, which significantly improves the electrochemical activity of the composite toward the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) in alkaline media in the presence of 1.0 mol L−1 ethanol, yielding 8.0 mA cm−2 at 1.6 V. The charge transfer resistance (Rct) was determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the result shows that the Rct of SnO2/CuO drastically decreased. The findings in this work highlight that the designed oxidized heterostructures with non-noble metals are promising candidates for energy conversion devices and sensors. Furthermore, this work confirms the advantages of using an assisted microwave heating process to develop an advanced SnO2/CuO composite with the potential to be used in electro-oxidation processes. The life and efficiency of electric vehicle batteries are susceptible to temperature. The impact of cold climate dramatically decreases battery life, while at the same time increasing internal impedance. Thus, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) is vital to heat and maintain temperature range if the electric vehicle's batteries are operating in a cold climate. This paper presents an induction heater-based battery thermal management system that aims to ensure thermal safety and prolong the life cycle of Lithium-ion batteries (Li-Bs). This study used a standard simulation tool known as GT-Suite to simulate the behavior of the proposed BTMS. For the heat transfer, an indirect liquid heating method with variations in flow rate was considered between Lithium-ion batteries. The battery and cabin heating rate was analyzed using the induction heater powers of 2, 4, and 6 kW at ambient temperatures of −20, −10, and 0 °C. A water and ethylene glycol mixture with a ratio of 50:50 was considered as an operating fluid. The findings reveal that the thermal performance of the proposed system is generally increased by increasing the flow rate and affected by the induction heater capacity. It is evident that at −20 °C with 27 LPM and 6 kW heater capacity, the maximum heat transfer rate is 0.0661 °C/s, whereas the lowest is 0.0295 °C/s with 2 kW heater capacity. Nano fluids are widely used today for various energy-related applications such as coolants, refrigerants, and fuel additives. New coolants and design modifications are being explored due to renewed interest in improving the working fluid properties of heat exchangers. Several studies have investigated nanofluids to enhance radiator and heat exchanger performance. A new class of coolants includes single, binary, and tertiary nanoparticle-based hybrid nano-coolants using ethylene glycol/deionized water combinations as base fluids infused with different nanoparticles. This review article focuses on the hydrothermal behavior of heat exchangers (radiators for engine applications) with mono/hybrid nanofluids. The first part of the review focuses on the preparation of hybrid nanofluids, highlighting the working fluid properties such as density, viscosity, specific heat, and thermal conductivity. The second part discusses innovative methodologies adopted for accomplishing higher heat transfer rates with relatively low-pressure drop and pump work. The third part discusses the applications of mono and hybrid nanofluids in engine radiators and fuel additives in diesel and biodiesel blends. Concentrator photovoltaics have several advantages over flat plate systems. However, the increase in solar concentration usually leads to an increase in the solar cell temperature, which decreases the performance of the system. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the performance and temperature limits of a high concentration photovoltaic Thermal system (HCPVT) based on a 1 cm2 multi-junction solar cell subjected to a concentration ratio from 500× to 2000× by using three different types of cooling fluids (water, ethylene glycol and water mixture (60:40), and syltherm oil 800). The results show that, for this configuration, the maximum volumetric temperature of the solar cell did not exceed the manufacturer's recommended limit for the tested fluids. At 2000× the lowest solar cell temperature obtained by using water was 93.5 °C, while it reached as high as 109 °C by using syltherm oil 800, which is almost equal to the maximum operating limit provided by the manufacturer (110 °C). Overall, the best performance in terms of temperature distribution, thermal, and electrical efficiency was achieved by using water, while the highest outlet temperature was obtained by using syltherm oil 800. Nanoparticles are useful in improving the efficiency of convective heat transfer. The current study addresses this gap by making use of an analogy between Al 2 O 3 and γ -Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles in various base fluids across a stretched sheet conjunction with f. Base fluids include ethylene glycol and water. We address, for the first time, the stagnation-point flow of a boundary layer of γ -Al 2 O 3 nanofluid over a stretched sheet with slip boundary condition. Al 2 O 3 nanofluids employ Brinkman viscosity and Maxwell's thermal conductivity models with thermal radiations, whereas γ -Al 2 O 3 nanofluids use viscosity and thermal conductivity models generated from experimental data. For the boundary layer, the motion equation was solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method and the shooting approach. Plots of the velocity profile, temperature profile, skin friction coefficient and reduced Nusselt number are shown. Simultaneous exposure of the identical nanoparticles to water and ethylene glycol, it is projected, would result in markedly different behaviors with respect to the temperature profile. Therefore, this kind of research instills confidence in us to conduct an analysis of the various nanoparticle decompositions and profile structures with regard to various base fluids. Barocaloric cooling is classified as environmentally friendly because of the employment of solid-state materials as refrigerants. The reference and well-established processes are based on the active barocaloric regenerative refrigeration cycle, where the solid-state material acts both as refrigerant and regenerator; an auxiliary fluid (generally water of water/glycol mixtures) is used to transfer the heat fluxes with the final purpose of subtracting heat from the cold heat exchanger coupled with the cold cell. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effect on heat transfer of working with nanofluids as auxiliary fluids in an active barocaloric refrigerator operating with a vulcanizing rubber. The results reveal that, as a general trend, adding 10% of copper nanoparticles in the water/ethylene-glycol mixture carries to +30% as medium heat transfer enhancement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an attempt to explore the heat transfer features of the steady three-dimensional rotating flow of magneto-hydrodynamic hybrid nanofluids under the effect of nonlinear radiation over the bi-directional stretching surface. For this purpose, two different nano-particles, namely silver (Ag) and molybdenum di-sulfide (MoS2), were selected. Three different conventional base fluids were utilized to form desired hybrid nanofluids such as water (H2O), engine oil (EO), and ethylene glycol (EG). We obtained steady three-dimensional highly nonlinear partial differential equations. These highly nonlinear partial differential equations cannot be solved analytically, so these equations were handled in MATLAB with the BVP-4C technique with convergence tolerance at 10−6. The graph depicts the effect of the magnetization effect, thermal radiation, and stretching ratio on rotating hybrid nanofluids. Additionally, the impact of thermal radiation on the heat coefficient of three different hybrid nanofluids is being investigated. The augmentation in magnetization decreases the primary velocity, whereas the increment in radiation enhances the primary velocity. The stretching ratio and the presence of higher magnetic forces increase the temperature profile. The concentration profile was enhanced with an increment in the magnetic field, stretching, and rotation ratio. The maximum Nusselt number was achieved for the Ag-MoS2/EO hybrid nanofluid. It was concluded that augmentation in nonlinear radiation enhances the heat transfer coefficient for the examined cases (I) and (II) of the hybrid nanofluids. The Nusselt number doubled for both the examined cases under nonlinear radiation. Moreover, it was discovered that Ag-MoS2/water produced the best heat transfer results under nonlinear radiation. Therefore, the study recommends more frequent exploration of hybrid nanofluids (Ag-MoS2/water) when employing nonlinear radiation to analyze the heat transfer coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the global warming and resulting problems, attention has been paid to greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere since the 1980s and 1990s. For this reason, the Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol have tightened regulations on the use of gaseous refrigerants in both HVAC systems and industrial refrigeration. Gradually, new generations of gaseous refrigerants, that theoretically have much less negative environmental impact than their predecessors, are introduced into the market. The key parameter describing environmental impact is the GWP index, which is most often defined on a time horizon of 100 years. The long-term use of new generations of gaseous refrigerants in HVAC systems reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere; however, given that new generation gases often have a short lifetime, it seems that the adopted assessment may not be applicable. The aim of the article was to show how emissions of CO2 equivalent to the atmosphere differs in the short and long time horizon. The article presents the results of calculations of equivalent CO2 emissions to the atmosphere caused by the operation of compressor cooling devices used in HVAC systems, where cooling is done with the use of water or a water-glycol solution. The analysis was carried out for 28 commonly used devices on the world market. The analyzed devices work with refrigerants: R513A, R454B, R290, R1234ze, R32, R134a, R410A. The equivalent emissions values for GWP 100 and GWP 20 were analyzed in relation to the unit power of the devices depends on refrigerant mass and number of fans. The study showed that in the case of new generation refrigerants with a very short lifetime, the use of GWP 100 indicators is misleading and does not fully reflect the effects of environmental impact, especially in the area of refrigeration equipment application. Entropy generation is always a matter of concern in a heat transfer system. It denotes the amount of energy lost as a result of irreversibility. As a result, it must be reduced. The present work considers an investigation on the turbulent forced convective heat transfer and entropy generation of Al2O3-Ethylene glycol (EG) nanofluid inside a circular tube subjected to constant wall temperature. The study is focused on the development of an analytical framework by using mathematical models to simulate the characteristics of nanofluids in the as-mentioned thermal system. The simulated result is validated using published data. Further, Genetic algorithm (GA) and DIRECT algorithm are implemented to determine the optimal condition which yields minimum entropy generation. According to the findings, heat transfer increases at a direct proportion to the mass flow, Reynolds number (Re), and volume concentration of nanoparticles. Furthermore, as Re increases, particle concentration should be decreased in order to reduce total entropy generation (TEG) and to improve heat transfer rate of any given particle size. A minimal concentration of nanoparticles is required to reduce TEG when Re is maintained constant. The highest increase in TEG with nanofluids was 2.93 times that of basefluid. The optimum condition for minimum entropy generation is Re = 4000, nanoparticle size = 65 nm, volume concentration = 0.2% and mass flow rate = 0.54 kg/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A good design of the ice rink floor could save a great deal of capital and operational costs for hockey arenas. This ice rink floor design focuses on a cost-effective tube arrangement and an optimal concrete coverage over the tubes that could provide sufficient heat transfer rate between the coolant and the freezing ice. This paper reports a theoretical model to simulate the heat transfer characteristic of a different tube diameter, spacing distance, and thickness of the concrete coverage of the tubes of an ice rink. In addition, calcium chloride and ethylene glycol with water solutions are compared to figure out the pros and cons of these two secondary coolants. Latent heat storage units for refrigeration processes are promising as alternatives to water/glycol-based storage due to their significantly higher energy densities, which would lead to more compact and potentially more cost-effective storages. In this study, important thermophysical properties of five phase change material (PCM) candidates are determined in the temperature range between −22 and −35 °C and their compatibility with relevant metals and polymers is investigated. The goal is to complement existing scattered information in literature and to apply a consistent testing methodology to all PCMs, to enable a more reliable comparison between them. More specifically, the enthalpy of fusion, melting point, density, compatibility with aluminum, copper, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), neoprene and butyl rubber, are experimentally determined for 1-heptanol, n-decane, propionic acid, NaCl/water mixtures, and Al(NO3)3/water mixtures. The results of the investigations reveal individual strengths and weaknesses of the five candidates. Further, 23.3 wt.% NaCl in water stands out for its very high volumetric energy density and n-decane follows with a lower energy density but better compatibility with surrounding materials and supercooling performance. The results of free convection heat transfer investigation from a horizontal, uniformly heated tube immersed in a nanofluid are presented. Experiments were performed with five base fluids, i.e., ethylene glycol (EG), distilled water (W) and the mixtures of EG and water with the ratios of 60/40, 50/50, 40/60 by volume, so the Rayleigh (Ra) number range was 3 × 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 1.3 × 106 and the Prandtl (Pr) number varied from 4.4 to 176. Alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticles were tested at the mass concentrations of 0.01, 0.1 and 1%. Enhancement as well as deterioration of heat transfer performance compared to the base fluids were detected depending on the composition of the nanofluid. Based on the experimental results obtained, a correlation equation that describes the dependence of the average Nusselt (Nu) number on the Ra number, Pr number and concentration of nanoparticles is proposed. The article presents an original and innovative technical solution for the exploitation of low-temperature excess heat from hot water boilers that use gas or liquid fuel for the needs of high-temperature heating in buildings or in industry. The primary fuel efficiency used for hot water boilers can be significantly increased by utilizing the excess low-temperature heat of flue gases that are discharged into the environment and thus also reduce CO2 emissions. Hot water systems usually operate at higher temperatures of the heating water, which is transported to the heat consumer via supply pipe, and the cooled heating water is returned to the hot water boiler via the return pipe. For the excess low-temperature heat exploitation of the flue gases from hot water boiler, it is necessary to install a condenser in the flue gas discharge pipe, where condensation of water vapour present in the flue gas heats water or a mixture of water and glycol. The heating water, which is cooled and returned from the heat consumer via the return pipe, is led to the condenser of the high-temperature heat pump, where it is preheated and then led to the hot water boiler, where it is heated to the final temperature. A computer simulation with the Aspen plus software package for the series or parallel connection of high-temperature heat pump to a hot water heating system and the economic analysis of the excess heat exploitation from the flue gases are also performed. To understand the molecular mechanisms of hydrocarbon gas formation in biomass gasification, gasification of simple polyalcohols (glycerol, propylene glycol, and ethylene glycol) were studied at 400, 600, and 800 °C (residence times: 0.9–1.4 s) from the viewpoint of dehydration reactions that form aldehydes with various substituents as intermediates to produce hydrocarbon gases. The results were also compared with those of glyceraldehyde and dihydroxyacetone, which are reported to produce syngas (H2 and CO) selectively. All polyalcohols became reactive at 600 °C to form condensable products in 15.7–24.7% yields (C-based), corresponding to 33.9–38.4% based on the amounts of reacted polyalcohols. These condensable products, mostly aldehydes, act as gas-forming intermediates, because the polyalcohols were completely gasified at 800 °C (hydrocarbon gas contents: 20.3–35.3%, C-based). Yields of the intermediates bearing alkyl groups at 600 °C were proportionally correlated to the yields of hydrocarbon gases at 800 °C, suggesting that the alkyl groups are further converted into hydrocarbon gases via the fragmentation of acyl radicals. Dehydration reactions were suggested to occur in both heterolytic and radical mechanisms by theoretical calculations. Glyceraldehyde tended to fragment directly into CO and H2, instead of forming a dehydration intermediate. Renewable energies are often subject to stochastic resources and daily cycles. Energy storage systems are consequently applied to provide a solution for the mismatch between power production possibility and its utilization period. In this study, a solar integrated thermo-electric energy storage (S-TEES) is analyzed both from an economic and environmental point of view. The analyzed power plant with energy storage includes three main cycles, a supercritical CO2 power cycle, a heat pump and a refrigeration cycle, indirectly connected by sensible heat storages. The hot reservoir is pressurized water at 120/160 °C, while the cold reservoir is a mixture of water and ethylene glycol, maintained at −10/−20 °C. Additionally, the power cycle's evaporator section rests on a solar-heated intermediate temperature (95/40 °C) heat reservoir. Exergo-economic and exergo-environmental analyses are performed to identify the most critical components of the system and to obtain the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), as well as the environmental indicators of the system. Both economic and environmental analyses revealed that solar energy converting devices are burdened with the highest impact indicators. According to the results of exergo-economic analysis, it turned out that average annual LCOE of S-TEES can be more than two times higher than the regular electricity prices. However, the true features of the S-TEES system should be only fully assessed if the economic results are balanced with environmental analysis. Life cycle assessment (LCA) revealed that the proposed S-TEES system has about two times lower environmental impact than referential hydrogen storage systems compared in the study. Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEn) are frequently discussed as alternative diesel fuels, with various synthesis routes considered. OME3–5 syntheses demand significant amounts of thermal energy due to the complex separation processes that they entail. Therefore, innovative process designs are needed. An important tool for the development of new processes is process simulation software. To ensure sound process simulations, reliable physico-chemical models and component property data are necessary. Herein we present the implementation of a state-of-the-art thermodynamic model to describe the component systems of formaldehyde-water and formaldehyde-methanol using Microsoft® Excel (2010, Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA, USA) and Aspen Plus®, (V8.8, Aspen Tech, Bedford, MA, USA) determine the deviation between the calculated results and experimental literature data, and minimize the deviation by means of parameter fitting. To improve the accuracy of the estimation of the missing property data of hemiformals and methylene glycols formed from formaldehyde using group contribution methods, the normal boiling points were estimated based on molecular analogies. The boiling points of OME6-10 are determined through parameter regression in accordance with the vapor pressure equation. As an application example, an optimization of the product separation of the state-of-the-art formaldehyde synthesis is presented that helps decrease the losses of methanol and formaldehyde in flue gas and wastewater. In this study, the 3ω method was used to determine the thermal conductivity of nanofluids (ethylene glycol containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)) with temperature gradients. The thermal modeling of the traditional 3ω method was modified to measure the spatial variation of thermal conductivity within a droplet of nanofluid. A direct current (DC) heater was used to generate a temperature gradient inside a sample fluid. A DC heating power of 14 mW was used to provide a temperature gradient of 5000 K/m inside the sample fluid. The thermal conductivity was monitored at hot- and cold-side 3ω heaters with a spacing of 0.3 mm. Regarding the measurement results for the hot and cold 3ω heaters, when the temperature gradient was applied, the maximum thermal conductivity difference was determined to be 3% of the original value. By assuming that the thermo-diffusion of MWCNTs was entirely responsible for this difference, the Soret coefficient of the MWCNTs in the ethylene glycol was calculated to be −0.749 K−1. This study reviewed and summarized the literature regarding the use of alcohols during hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of algal biomass feedstocks. The use of both pure alcohols and alcohol-water co-solvents were considered. Based upon this review, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the impacts of different alcohol co-solvents (ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol) on the HTL treatment of a specific saltwater microalga (Tetraselmis sp.) at two temperatures: 300 °C and 350 °C. Based on their performance, two co-solvents, isopropanol and ethylene glycol, were selected to explore the effects of varying solvent concentrations and reaction temperatures on product yields and biocrude properties. The type and amount of added alcohol did not significantly affect the biocrude yield or composition. Biocrude yields were in the range of 30–35%, while a nearly constant yield of 21% insoluble products was observed, largely resulting from ash constituents within the algal feedstock. The benefits of using alcohol co-solvents (especially isopropanol) were the reduced viscosity of the biocrude products and reduced rates of viscosity increase with biocrude aging. These effects were attributed mainly to the physical properties of the co-solvent mixtures (solubility, polarity, density, etc.) rather than chemical processes. Under the reaction conditions used, there was no evidence that the co-solvents participated in biocrude production by means of hydrogen donation or other chemical processes. Recovery and recycling of the co-solvent present various challenges, depending upon the type and amount of the co-solvent that is used. For example, glycol solvents are recovered nearly completely within the aqueous product stream, whereas simple alcohols are partitioned between the biocrude and aqueous product streams. In commercial applications, the slight benefits provided by the use of co-solvents must be balanced by the challenges of co-solvent recovery and recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a subclass of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), was dispersed in a water-glycol solution to form a porous slurry. Using this porous slurry, a tail gas mixture containing hydrogen/propylene was separated. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of using only the solid ZIF-8 material, a ZIF-8/water slurry, a ZIF-8/glycol slurry, or a ZIF-8/water-glycol slurry on the selectivity of the separation. The experimental results show that the slurry made from ZIF-8/water-glycol (20%) achieves good gas separation. The respective influences of the solid content, initial pressure, and temperature on the separation performance were also investigated in detail. We found that lower temperature, a ZIF-8 mass fraction of 20 wt %, and a higher operation pressure are suitable for the recovering of hydrogen from a H2/C3H6 mixture. The selectivity of C3H6 over H2 reaches 128 at 680 kPa initial pressure. The slurries were completely reusable for at least three cycles. The structure of the ZIF-8 material was not altered after repeated separation, meaning the material can likely be reused more than three times on an industrial scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
