Evaluating the heat losses of linear Fresnel concentrator (LFC) receivers is crucial for determining plant efficiency and managing the flow rate in solar lines. This becomes particularly significant when operating in direct steam generation to manage the steam quality at the line outlet. In general, the LFC receiver heat losses are determined experimentally on prototype systems to control the inlet condition or numerically using 3D computational fluid dynamics models or 1D mathematical models. The originality of this work is in reporting the study of heat losses of a commercial 9 MWe solar Fresnel power plant without impacting its electricity production. The experimentally measured receiver's linear heat losses were found to be well represented by a second-degree polynomial function of the difference between the inlet/outlet fluid temperature average and the ambient temperature. Finally, to express the strong influence of wind speed on the receiver heat losses, a 1D single-phase model was developed and adapted to include the current receiver degradation. To conclude, the model was validated by comparing the experimental and theoretical results. Based on this comparison, it can be concluded that the model accurately predicts experimental heat losses with an acceptable uncertainty of ±30%, regardless of the wind velocity. Today, application of cavity receivers in solar concentrator systems is suggested as an interesting and novelty research subject for increasing thermal performance. In this research, a parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) with a rectangular cavity receiver was energetically investigated. The cavity receiver was studied with smooth and corrugated tubes. Different solar heat transfer fluids were considered, including water, air, and thermal oil. The effect of different operational parameters, as well as structural parameters, was investigated. The results showed that the linear rectangular cavity receiver with corrugated tube showed higher amounts of the absorbed heat and energy performance compared to the smooth tube as the cavity tube. Thermal performance of the rectangular cavity was improved using the application of water as the solar heat transfer fluid, which was followed by thermal oil and, finally, air, as the solar heat transfer fluid. Finally, it could be recommended that the rectangular cavity receiver with smooth tube using air as the solar heat transfer fluid is more appropriate for coupling this system with a Bryton cycle, whereas the rectangular cavity receiver with the corrugated tube using water or oil as the solar heat transfer fluid is recommended for achieving higher outlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid. Numerical calculations are performed to determine the potential of using one-dimensional transparent photonic crystal heat mirrors (TPCHMs) as transparent coatings for solar receivers. At relatively low operating temperatures of 500 K, the TPCHMs investigated herein do not provide a significant advantage over conventional transparent heat mirrors that are made using transparent conducting oxide films. However, the results show that TPCHMs can enhance the performance of transparent solar receiver covers at higher operating temperatures. At 1000 K, the amount of radiation reflected by a transparent cover back to the receiver can be increased from 40.4% to 60.0%, without compromising the transmittance of solar radiation through the cover, by using a TPCHM in the place of a conventional transparent mirror with a In2O3:Sn film. For a receiver operating temperature of 1500 K, the amount of radiation reflected back to the receiver can be increased from 25.7% for a cover that is coated with a In2O3:Sn film to 57.6% for a cover with a TPCHM. The TPCHM that is presented in this work might be useful for high-temperature applications where high-performance is required over a relatively small area, such as the cover for evacuated receivers or volumetric receivers in Sterling engines. The thermal enhancement of parabolic trough collectors is a critical issue and numerous ideas have been applied in the literature on this domain. The objective of this paper is to investigate some usual thermal enhancement techniques for improving the performance of evacuated and non-evacuated receivers of parabolic trough solar collectors. More specifically, the use of twisted tape inserts, perforated plate inserts, and internally finned absorbers are compared with the reference case of the smooth absorber. The analysis is conducted with a developed and validated thermal model in Engineering Equation Solver. The collector is investigated for a typical flow rate of 100 L/min and for inlet temperatures between 50 °C and 350 °C with Syltherm 800 as working fluid. According to the final results, the use of internally finned absorber leads to the highest thermal efficiency enhancement, which is up to 2.1% for the non-evacuated collector and up to 1.6% for the evacuated tube collector. The perforated plate inserts and the twisted tape inserts were found to lead to lower enhancements, which are up to 1.8% and 1.5%, respectively, for the non-evacuated collector, while they are up to 1.4% and 1.2%, respectively, for the evacuated collector. Moreover, the pressure drop increase with the use of the thermal enhancement methods is investigated and the use of internally finned absorber is found again to be the superior technique with the performance evaluation criterion to be ranged from 1.5 to 1.8 for this case.
