This work focuses on the evolution of lubrication wedge shaping in internal combustion piston engines, taking into account liquid microflows on curved surfaces and coating microgeometries. It introduces a new approach to the analysis of friction losses by simulating the microflow of lubricating oil between the surfaces of piston rings cooperating with the cylinder surface. The models used take into account three types of microgeometry and material expansion. Key results indicate that microirregularities with a stereometry of 0.1–0.2 µm significantly influence the distribution of oil film thickness in the phase of maximum working pressure, which is critical for the functioning of the seal ring. The innovation of the work consists of demonstrating that, despite small changes in the friction force and power in the piston rings, changes in the minimum values of the oil film thickness are significant. The work highlights the failure to take into account microgeometry parameters in friction models, which leads to significant errors in the simulation results, especially in terms of oil film continuity and the contribution of mixed friction. The simulations also indicate that advanced geometric models with high mesh resolution are necessary only for the assessment of changes in oil film thickness during the highest pressure increase in the combustion chamber and taking into account various mixed friction conditions. Reducing fuel consumption to decrease CO2 emissions has become a key development factor in the automotive industry. An effective way to decrease fuel consumption is to reduce the influence of various sources of energy loss. One way to increase engine efficiency is to use low-viscosity engine oils to reduce friction losses in the engine's tribological systems. The aim of the article was to analyze the relationship between the type of engine oil and fuel consumption in a group of 12 passenger cars. This was a homogenous group of identical cars, equipped with the same engine, operated under very similar conditions. Three groups of engine oils (Revline, Total, Orlen) were tested in vehicles and stressed with comparable workloads. The experiment was conducted over two years (two stages of research). The collected results were presented using graphs and compared using statistical tests, split into two stages of research, with four seasonal temperature groups. The study provides a detailed description of fuel consumption differences taking into account variations in ambient temperature. The analyses were focused on finding answers to two research questions: does the type of engine oil affect the variation in combustion levels, and what is the variability of fuel consumption in different seasons due to the ambient temperature variability? Briefly, in both stages of the study, vehicles using Revline oil attained the highest average fuel consumption throughout the study period. Vehicles using Total oil showed similar results to those using Revline oil, with the difference in fuel consumption not as noticeable during warmer months. To reduce the friction loss and the piston-knocking noise from the perspective of the design of the cylinder bore profile, the piston-ring cylinder bore (PRCB) dynamic model of an L6 diesel engine was developed using AVL-Excite-Piston & Rings. Based on the full-scale test method, the effects of bore taper, starting height of tapered profile, and ellipticity on the friction power and knocking energy of the PRCB system were investigated, and the optimization of the design of the bore profile was carried out with the objectives of minimizing the system's friction power and the peak knocking kinetic energy. The results showed that the taper of the cylinder bore has the greatest influence on the system's friction power and the peak knocking kinetic energy, followed by the starting height of the conical profile. For the peak knocking kinetic energy of the piston, there was an obvious interaction between the taper and the starting height of the conical profile. When the taper was 35 μm and 45 μm, the peak knocking kinetic energy showed a decreasing and then increasing trend with the increase in the starting height of the profile, and when the taper was 55 μm the peak knocking kinetic energy monotonically was decreased with the increase in the starting height of the conical profile. The optimization results showed that the system's friction power was decreased by 15.05% and the peak knocking kinetic energy was decreased by 21.41% for a taper degree of 55 μm, a tapered profile starting height of 31 mm, and an ellipticity of 50 μm compared to the initial cylindrical cylinder bore. In the rotating machinery sector, active magnetic bearing (AMB) has drawn great attention due to its benefits over the conventional bearing system. The high-speed technology is enhanced by AMBs, which also reduce maintenance costs and eliminate friction loss. This paper presents a unique, simpler, efficient design and hardware implementation for high-speed applications using two-coil I-type active magnetic bearings. To maintain the 10 mm air gap between the actuator and the rotor, two categories of controllers have been designed for the proposed system to control the position and another for detecting the coil current through the power amplifier. The AMB system is incorporated into a 3D finite element model for determining magnetic properties. The magnetic analysis is then carried out under various situations, and the attractive force characteristics have been evaluated for this suggested system to check the performance of the multicoil AMB system along with the stability analysis. The system is designed and simulated in MATLAB Simulink and implemented in hardware to validate the different outputs viz. position response and current response. Finally, an AC magnet is designed to rotate the rotor after the levitation, and a higher speed of 19,643 rpm is achieved in comparison to conventional bearings, which can be utilized in different industrial applications. Recently, high-speed motors are receiving a lot of attention in the industrial field. When driving a motor at high speed, the advantages include high power density, high efficiency, and miniaturization. However, the disadvantages of the high-speed operation of motors are mechanical and structural safety. This is because the bearings used in high-speed motors require characteristics such as precision and low friction. There are two prominent types of bearings mainly used in high-speed motors: rolling bearings and magnetic bearings. A feature of rolling bearings is that they reduce frictional resistance by contacting points or lines between the shaft and the bearing. However, the disadvantages of rolling bearings are high mechanical friction losses due to the need for contact with the lubrication system. Maintenance costs are high. For this reason, a lot of research on bearings is being conducted to reduce the frictional loss of bearings and increase their efficiency and reliability. Bearings that are advantageous for high-speed operation are magnetic bearings that do not require lubricants, have no friction loss, and have low maintenance. However, magnetic bearings have disadvantages such as high cost and difficulty in miniaturization. In this paper, a stator with a separated teeth structure was used to compensate for these disadvantages. Using this, a model with miniaturization, light weight, and high manufacturability was proposed. The model name proposed in this study is called the STMB (separated teeth magnetic bearing). There are also disadvantages of the STMB model proposed in this paper. A model that compensates for this drawback is called the HSTMB (hybrid separated teeth magnetic bearing). The HSTMB reduces the weight by removing the back yoke of the stator and has advantages of a high filling rate and high productivity in the form of a module. The cooling circuit is an important component of the magnetic drive pump because it prevents demagnetization of the permanent magnet and damage to the containment shell owing to a high temperature increase. In this paper, the flow field and losses of the cooling circuit of the magnetic pump are discussed and experimentally verified based on numerical simulation methods. Five different lengths of magnetic couplings were designed, and the flow field distribution, cooling flow rate, and loss variation laws of the cooling circuit were analyzed. The results show that the pump flow rate and magnetic coupling length have a minimal effect on the velocity distribution in the cooling circuit. When the magnet length increases from 30 mm to 55 mm, the temperature rise of the cooling circuit and the pressure drop at the gap increase by 23.1% and 25.3%, respectively. When the length of the magnetic coupling remains constant, the cooling flow rate of the cooling circuit falls with an increasing pump flow rate, and it reduces by 8.4% when the pump flow rate increases from 0.7 Q to 1.3 Q. The water friction loss and eddy current loss of the cooling circuit increase with an increase in the magnetic coupling length, while the cooling flow rate decreases. When the magnet length increases from 30 mm to 55 mm, the eddy current losses in the coupling circuit and the water friction losses in the cooling circuit increase by 45% and 35%, respectively, while the cooling flow rate decreases by 13%. Decreasing production and rising prices of cars, especially those with electric drive, lead to longer use of cars with internal combustion engines. It can be assumed that in the future, more and more cars powered by such engines with high mileage and therefore high wear will be used. Engine wear leads to reduced efficiency and increased emissions. This paper analyzes the impact of wear of the piston–rings–cylinder system components on energy losses associated with gas leakage from the combustion chamber and friction of the rings against the cylinder liner in a car spark-ignition engine. A ring pack model was used for the analyses. The input data for the simulation were gained in measurements made on the engine test stand and measurements of the wear of the engine components used in the car. The energy losses associated with blow-by in an unworn engine ranged from 1.5% of the indicated work at high load to almost 5% at low load. In the engine after 300,000 km, these losses increased to 2.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Ring friction losses in an unworn engine ranged from 1.5% at high load to 9% at low load. The experimental examination of local heat transfer, thermal intensification, friction factors, and thermal performance factors (TPF) in a rectangular channel with square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) are presented in this paper. The purpose of this study is to modify the typical transverse baffles (TB) into square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) in order to improve the thermal performance and heat transfer rate of the channel. The effects of SW-TBs with various wing attack angles and Reynolds numbers on the heat transfer performance characteristics were examined using a thermochromic liquid crystal sheet. In the experiments, the SW-TBs were attached to the bottom wall of the channel, which had an aspect ratio (W:H) of 3.75:1. The SW-TBs had a width (w) of 150 mm, a square perforated cross-sectional area (a × b) of 8 × 8 mm2, and attack angles (θ) of 0° (solid transverse-baffle), 22.5°, 45°, 67.5°, and 90°. The bottom wall of the channel was evenly heated, while the other walls were insulated. The temperature contours on the heated surface were plotted using temperatures obtained through using the thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) image-processing method. Experimental results revealed that the SW-TBs created multiple impinging jets, apart from the recirculation. At the proper attack angles (θ = 22.5° and 45°), the SW-TBs offered greater heat transfer rates and caused lower friction losses, resulting in higher TPFs than the solid transverse baffles. In the current work, channels where the SW-TBs display a θ = 45° presented the greatest TPF, as high as 1.26. The multiple impinging jets issuing by the SW-TBs suppressed the size of the recirculation flow and allowed better contact between the fluid flow and channel wall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reviews the state of the knowledge and technology in the field of friction-loss measurements in internal combustion piston engines. The dependencies that describe the loss of energy in combustion engines and injection apparatus are presented. Currently, very little can be found in the literature on the study of frictional forces in injection apparatus, but mainly in the piston–cylinder group, so this work significantly fills that gap. The aim of this article is to construct a device and to develop a method for assessing the technical state of injector nozzles to minimize friction losses in internal combustion engines at the stages of evaluation, design, production and operation. This article presents a stand for determining the maximum friction forces due to gravity loading by water-jet control. This article also presents test results on the maximum friction force between a needle and a body of injector nozzles in piston combustion engines on a designed and purpose-built stand outside of the combustion engine. Various designs and injector nozzles are made from various types of alloy steel for marine and automotive piston internal combustion engines fueled with distillation or residual fuels, and are tested. The research concerned conventional elements for the injection apparatus as well as electronically controlled subsystems. Precision pairs of injection equipment are selected for the tests: new ones are employed after the storage period and operated in natural conditions. The elements dismantled from the internal combustion engines are tested in the presence of fuel or calibration oil of similar properties. The maximum static frictional forces under the hydrostatic loading are measured, alongside the parameters for the dynamic movement of the nozzle needles from bodies of the injector nozzle as time, speed, acceleration and dynamic force. The influence of the angular position of the needle in relation to the bodies of the precision pairs conventional internal combustion engines, the diametral clearance between the nozzle body and needle, and the surface conditions on the values of the maximum friction force are also presented. Errors in shape and position result in the uniqueness of the friction force at the mutual angular position of the needle in relation to the nozzle body, and the decrease in diametral clearance and deterioration of the surface state increase the friction losses. Magnetic gears (MGs) have gained increasing attention due to their sound performance in high torque density and low friction loss. Aiming to maximize the torque density, topology design has been a popular issue in recent years. However, studies on the optimization comparisons of a general MG topology pattern are very limited. This paper proposes a Taguchi-method-based optimization method for a general MG topology pattern, which can cover most of the common types of radially magnetized concentric-surface-mounted MGs (RMCSM-MGs). The Taguchi method is introduced to evaluate the influence of each parameter in MGs. Moreover, the parameter value range is re-examined based on the sensitivity analysis results. The rotor overtemperature caused by losses is one of the important issues for the high-speed electrical machine. This paper focuses on the rotor loss analysis and CFD-thermal coupling evaluation for 105 kW, 36,000 r/min HSPMSM. Three types of sleeve materials as carbon-fiber, Titanium alloy, and stainless steel are introduced in this paper, researching the effects of sleeve conductivity, thickness and rotational speed on rotor eddy current loss, balancing rotor mechanical strength. The sleeve made of titanium alloy material with a thickness of 3.5 mm is chosen to effectively suppress the rotor eddy current loss in high-speed motors in the paper. The air friction loss becomes significant based on the PM motor at high rotational speed. The roundness error of the rotor sleeve has the important impact on the air friction loss of the rotor and the rotor temperature of the motor, which leads to the over temperature of the rotor. Therefore, based on the CFD fluid model, the influence of roundness error, cooling parameters, rotational speed and temperature boundary on the air friction loss is studied in detail, and the expression is summarized to provide reference for estimating the air friction loss. According to the rotor structure in this paper, the optimal cooling air inlet velocity is 10 m/s. Finally, the loss separation method is used to obtain the air friction loss measurement results. The accuracy of the finite element calculation results of air friction loss is verified through the experimental data. The temperature rise of the HSPMSM was also measured with 5.5% error. The subject of the research was limestone hydromixture consisting of particles of a mean size of 45.5 μm conveyed by water in a pipeline of a total length of 632 m. In the paper, the results of rheological measurements of tested hydromixtures after the application of deflocculant consisting of waste product from the lime production process in the form of mineral particles and commonly known dispersant were presented. Calculations of pressure drop including hydromixtures with volume concentrations in the range of 21.30–50.00%, and density ranging from 1140–1410 kg/m3 in a pipeline of 200 mm diameter are presented. A decrease in friction losses in the flow in the pipeline of hydromixtures with different mass concentrations after the addition of deflocculant was observed. The study revealed that the addition of deflocculant resulted in a reduction of friction in the pipeline, enabling the pumping of hydromixtures with twice higher solids concentrations than originated from industrial installation, with a lower volumetric flow rate. This resulted in a decrease of the power consumption of the motor driving the pump, and obtained significant energy savings in the hydromixture transport process. Rolling-element bearings play vital roles in the dynamic vibration performance of the whole machinery. Hence, accurate modeling and assessment of the rolling-element bearing are beneficial for the well understanding of the vibration response of rolling-element bearing. However, cage slip is usually ignored in the traditional rolling-element bearing modeling methods, which has a direct influence on the rotating speed and friction force of the rolling elements. To settle the modeling problem of rolling-element bearing with cage slip, in this study, a nonlinear dynamic model with multiple degrees of freedom of the roller bearing is established. The cage slip, the motion of each roller, nonlinear contact, damping, and friction are taken into consideration. With the proposed method, a nonlinear traction model is presented to describe the friction forces induced by cage slip. Furthermore, both the friction force acting on rolling elements and the effects of cage slip on the vibration response are investigated based on the established model. Some comparisons between the proposed modeling method with cage slip and the classical method without cage slip are made. The results show that the friction force applied to the balls increases with the cage slip, friction coefficient, rotational speed, and radial load. A slight cage slip could be beneficial for reducing the vibration energy of rolling-element bearing; however, it will result in more friction loss and impact components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the chemical and petroleum industry, the axial flow pump is widely used for the circulation pipeline system, and most of the transportation mediums are the shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluids. However, previous investigations on axial flow pumps are focused on water, which leads to a considerable deviation between the actual application and the research finding. In this work, shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluid (CMC solution) and viscous Newtonian fluid (the viscosity equals the apparent viscosity of CMC solution as the flow index is 1) are selected as the working medium. Based on the research output, lower apparent viscosity occurs in the near-wall and rotor–stator interaction region due to the larger velocity gradient. The shear-thinning property results in an increased tip leakage flow rate, and a sharp decline in friction loss. Compared to the viscous Newtonian fluid, the head and efficiency of the pump improves substantially for the shear-thinning fluid. The discrepancy is observed to increase with a higher flow rate. The comprehensive analysis of flow field and energy performance reveals that friction loss is still the main part of the total loss in the shear-thinning fluid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The operating costs of breaking coal particles into fine powder, to achieve optimum combustion for the boilers in a power plant, are made up of power input to carry on an energy intensive comminution mechanism and to overcome friction losses within pulverising machines. The operating costs also include the cost of the replacement of the processing system's components due to wear. This study presents the development and application of an attrition test machine that enables an investigation of the factors that influence pulverizing efficiency. The attrition tester simulates grinding conditions in real vertical spindle mills. In this kind of mill, as with the tester, the size reduction process results from a shearing action during the redistribution of the coal particles. The redistribution and attrition within the coal bed are forced by movement of the rollers (or by a disc rotation, in the case of the tester). The testing method was oriented toward mechanical properties, i.e., internal friction shear strength, abrasiveness and grindability. The development of a sustainable powertrain requires improved thermal efficiency. Reducing frictional power losses through the use of ultra-low viscosity oil is one of the most effective and economical ways. To assess the potential for efficiency enhancement in a new generation of future engines using low-viscosity oils, a technical analysis was conducted based on numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. This study proposes a numerical method coupling the whole multi-dynamics model and lubrication model under mixed lubrication regimes. Then, load distribution was calculated numerically and verified experimentally. Finally, this paper compares the bearing load and frictional energy loss of the main bearings when using The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 15W40 and SAE 0W20 oil. The results indicate that the application of ultralow-viscosity lubricant can reduce the hydraulic friction loss up to 24%, but the asperity friction loss would increase due to the reduction in load capacity. As a result, the design of a new generation of high efficiency internal combustion engines requires careful calculation and design to balance the trade-off relations between hydraulic friction and asperity friction. The overturning and eccentric abrasion of the slipper worsens the lubrication characteristics and increases the friction power loss and kinetic energy consumption of the slipper/swashplate interface to reduce the axial piston pump efficiency. A coupling lubrication numerical model and algorithm and a micro-chamfering structure are developed and proposed to predict more precisely and improve the lubrication characteristics of the slipper/swashplate interface. The simulation results reveal that the slipper without micro-chamfering overturns and contacts with the swashplate, while the one with micro-chamfering forms a certain oil film thickness to prevent this contact effectively. The minimum total power loss of the slipper/swashplate interface has to be effectively ensured under the worst working conditions, such as the high pressure, the low speed, the maximum swashplate inclination angle and the minimum house pressure. The optimal micro-chamfering width and depth are 1.2 mm and 3.5 μm or C1.2-3.5, the simulation average oil film thickness of which is approximately equal to the optimal analytical value. The experimental friction power loss of the slipper/swashplate interface is basically consistent with the simulation one, confirming the correctness and effectiveness of the coupling lubrication numerical model, and the optimization method and providing the further design direction of axial piston pumps. The paper critically reviews the current state of the art in flow inside sidewall gaps of hydraulic pumps and turbines. It describes the consequences of the presence of this type of flow in turbomachinery and then relates it to other physical phenomena that determine the behavior, operating characteristics, and overall performance of the machine. Despite the small dimensions of the rotor-stator spaces, the flow in these regions can significantly affect the overall flow field and, consequently, efficiency. The circulation of the fluid inside the gaps and secondary flow that is caused by rotating elements influences the disk friction losses, which is of great importance, especially in the case of low specific speed pumps and turbines. The flow pattern affects the pressure distribution inside a machine and, thus, generates axial thrust. The presence of secondary flow also significantly changes the rotordynamics and can bring about undesirable vibrations and acoustics issues. This article aims to review and summarize the studies that were conducted on the mentioned phenomena. Experimental and numerical studies are both taken into consideration. Aerodynamic drag and bearing friction are the main sources of standby losses in the flywheel rotor part of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS). Although these losses are typically small in a well-designed system, the energy losses can become significant due to the continuous operation of the flywheel over time. For aerodynamic drag, commonly known as windage, there is scarcity of information available for loss estimation since most of the publications do not cover the partial vacuum conditions as required in the design of low loss energy storage flywheels. These conditions cause the flow regime to fall between continuum and molecular flow. Bearings may be of mechanical or magnetic type and in this paper the former is considered, typically hybridized with a passive magnetic thrust bearing. Mechanical bearing loss calculations have been extensively addressed in the open literature, including technical information from manufacturers but this has not previously been presented clearly and simply with reference to this application. The purpose of this paper is therefore to provide a loss assessment methodology for flywheel windage losses and bearing friction losses using the latest available information. An assessment of windage losses based on various flow regimes is presented with two different methods for calculation of windage losses in FESS under rarefied vacuum conditions discussed and compared. The findings of the research show that both methods closely correlate with each other for vacuum conditions typically required for flywheels. The effect of the air gap between the flywheel rotor and containment is also considered and justified for both calculation methods. Estimation of the bearing losses and considerations for selection of a low maintenance, soft mounted, bearing system is also discussed and analysed for a flywheel of realistic dimensions. The effect of the number of charging cycles on the relative importance of flywheel standby losses has also been investigated and the system total losses and efficiency have been calculated accordingly. This contribution is focused on the fuel economy improvement of the Miller cycle under part-load characteristics on a supercharged DI (Direct Injection) gasoline engine. Firstly, based on the engine bench test, the effects with the Miller cycle application under 3000 rpm were studied. The results show that the Miller cycle has different extents of improvement on pumping loss, combustion and friction loss. For low, medium and high loads, the brake thermal efficiency of the baseline engine is increased by 2.8%, 2.5% and 2.6%, respectively. Besides, the baseline variable valve timing (VVT) is optimized by the test. Subsequently, the 1D CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model of the Miller cycle engine after the test optimization at the working condition of 3000 rpm and BMEP (Brake Mean Effective Pressure) = 10 bar was established, and the influence of the combined change of intake and exhaust valve timing on Miller cycle was studied by simulation. The results show that as the effect of the Miller cycle deepens, the engine's knocking tendency decreases, so the ignition timing can be further advanced, and the economy of the engine can be improved. Compared with the brake thermal efficiency of the baseline engine, the final result after simulation optimization is increased from 34.6% to 35.6%, which is an improvement of 2.9%. The deformation and failure of coal and rock materials is the primary cause of many engineering disasters. How to accurately and effectively monitor and forecast the damage evolution process of coal and rock mass, and form a set of prediction methods and prediction indicators is an urgent engineering problems to be solved in the field of rock mechanics and engineering. As a form of energy dissipation in the deformation process of coal and rock, microseismic (MS) can indirectly reflect the damage of coal and rock. In order to analyze the relationship between the damage degree of coal and rock and time-frequency characteristics of MS, the deformation and fracture process of coal and rock materials under different loading modes was tested. The time-frequency characteristics and generation mechanism of MS were analyzed under different loading stages. Meanwhile, the influences of properties of coal and rock materials on MS signals were studied. Results show that there is an evident mode cutoff point between high-frequency and low-frequency MS signals. The properties of coal and rock, such as the development degree of the original fracture, particle size and dense degree have a decisive influence on the amplitude, frequency, energy and other characteristic parameters of MS signals. The change of MS parameters is closely related to material damage, but has no strong relation with the loading rate. The richness of MS signals before the main fracture depends on the homogeneity of materials. With the increase of damage, the energy release rate increases, which can lead to the widening of MS signals spectrum. The stiffness and natural frequency of specimens decreases correspondingly. Meanwhile, the main reason that the dominant frequency of MS detected by sensors installed on the surface of coal and rock materials is mainly low-frequency is friction loss and the resonance effect. In addition, the spectrum and energy evolution of MS can be used as a characterization method of the damage degree of coal and rock materials. The numerical method on a double-channel sewage pump was studied, while the corresponding experimental result was also provided. On this basis, the influence of wall roughness on the pump performance was deeply studied. The results showed that there was a critical value of wall roughness. When the wall roughness was less than the critical value, it had a great influence on the pump performance, including the head, efficiency, and shaft power. As the wall roughness increased, the head and efficiency were continuously reduced, while the shaft power was continuously increased. Otherwise, the opposite was true. The effect of wall roughness on the head and hydraulic loss power was much smaller than that on the efficiency and disk friction loss power, respectively. With the increase of wall roughness, mechanical efficiency and hydraulic efficiency reduced constantly, leading to the decrement of the total efficiency. With the increase of flow rate, the effect of wall roughness on the head and efficiency gradually increased, while the influence on the leakage continuously reduced. A crank-rocker engine is a new invention used to convert oscillating motion from the curve-piston into the rotary motion of the crankshaft. The configuration of this new engine is different from the normal slider-crank engine, so the existing model used to calculate the combustion characteristic is not appropriate for this new engine. A fundamental thermodynamic model of a single curved-cylinder spark-ignition crank-rocker engine is presented. The model was simulated in MATLAB to predict the combustion characteristics at different operating conditions. The friction losses, residual gas fraction and combustion efficiency were introduced into the combustion model to improve the overall accuracy of the model. The developed model was used to analyze and evaluate the in-cylinder pressure, fuel burn rate, and heat release under various crank angle positions. To validate the predictions of the model, experimental tests were conducted on a single-cylinder crank-rocker engine at an engine speed of 2000 rpm, spark timing of 8.60 CA BTDC, full load and wide-open throttle (WOT) condition. Finally, the results were plotted and compared with the simulation results. The findings obtained from the current study have shown the ability of the simulation model to predict the combustion characteristics under different operating conditions. The agreement between the results of the present model and experimental data was reasonably good. This research work proposes a new model which can predict the behavior of the crank-rocker engine. Fluidic signals transferred between mutually communicating components of fluidic circuits are nowadays still often in the format of continuously varied value of pressure or flow rate. Especially when transported over longer distances, these simple signals may easily deteriorate due to varying properties they meet in the transmission. An example are friction losses dependent on local temperature. A solution to this signal corruption problem is to encode the signals into flow pulses. Their parameters (such as the number of pulses in a delivered pulse cluster) much less deteriorating during transfer are derived from the time delays generated in delay circuits and oscillators. This paper proposes and describes a model for evaluating the hydro-mechanical efficiency of external gear machines. The model is built considering and evaluating the main friction losses in the machines, including the viscous friction losses at the tooth tip gap, at the bearing blocks-gears gaps, at the journal bearings, and the meshing loss. To calculate the shear stress at each gap interface, the geometry of the gap has to be known. For this reason, the actual position of the gears inside the pump casing and consequent radial pressure distribution are numerically calculated to evaluate the gap height at the tooth tips. Moreover, the variation of the tilt and reference height of the lateral gaps between the gears and the pump bushings are considered. The shear stresses within the lateral gaps are estimated, for different lateral heights and tilt values. At the journal bearings gaps, the half Sommerfeld solution has been applied. The meshing loss has been calculated according to the suggestion of the International Standards. The hydro-mechanical efficiency results are then discussed with reference to commercial pumps experimentally characterized by the authors in a previous work. The average percentage deviation from experimental data was around 2%, without considering the most critical operating conditions (high delivery pressure, low rotational speed). The limits of this approach are also explained. Finally, the role of each source of loss is discussed, considering different operating conditions and two values of fluid viscosity. Lateral gap losses and meshing loss are much more relevant in determining the hydro-mechanical efficiency variation in the pump's operating range, especially at a low delivery pressure. Moreover, while lateral gap losses increase with the rotational speed, the meshing loss shows the opposite behavior. The tooth tip gap losses are never as relevant, but they increase at high pressure. The journal bearings losses become comparable with the lateral and meshing ones at high delivery pressure values. Considering the pumps analyzed and the operating range of delivery pressure values and rotational speed values, the meshing loss made the mechanical efficiency vary in a percentage range of ±7%, with lateral losses in the range of about the ±15%, when also considering the extreme operating points (low speed, high pressure; high speed, low pressure). The weight of the lateral losses slightly reduced when we analyzed the higher temperature results, while the meshing losses slightly increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
