Thermal energy storage integration using phase change materials (PCMs) in buildings has great potential for energy conservation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. Cutting-edge research and innovative ideas are required when using multilayered PCMs within typical construction materials to take advantage of their heat storage capability over a wide temperature range within buildings. This current study was carried out to experimentally test the efficacy of using dual PCMs RT28HC and RT21HC with different melting temperature ranges (28 °C and 21 °C) under variable thermal loading. The transient thermal response of various PCM-based configurations of concrete and cement blocks at different temperature inputs was obtained to determine the effectiveness of dual PCMs and their optimized configuration under experimental laboratory conditions. The range of the temperature input was varied from 22 °C to 50 °C, suitable for hot climatic conditions such as those in Pakistan. Laboratory ambient temperatures remained at ~17 °C for all experimental tests. Moreover, the results were compared using two parameters, i.e., decrement factor (DF) and time lag (TL). With DF and TL values of 0.10 and 5.72, respectively, in the high-temperature heating (HTH) regime and a low DF value of 0.08 and high TL of 5.17 in the moderate-temperature heating (MTH) regime, the RT28HC–RT21HC combination proved to be the most effective. The application of the RT28HC–RT21HC combination provided up to a 54.3% reduction in indoor temperatures in the HTH regime. This paper explored the energy–environment–economy (EEE) causal nexus of Pakistan, thereby reporting the causal determinants of the EEE nexus by employing the newly developed modified Peter and Clark (PC) algorithm. The modified PC algorithm was employed to investigate the causal ordering of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and economic growth across Pakistan's domestic, industrial, transportation and agricultural sectors. An empirical comparison, i.e., following Monte Carlo simulation experiments demonstrates that the proposed modified PC algorithm is superior to the original PC proposition and can differentiate between true and spurious nexus causalities. Our results show that significant causality is running from energy consumption in industrial and agricultural sectors towards economic growth. There is no causal association between energy consumption and economic growth in the domestic and transportation sectors. On the other hand, causality runs from energy consumption in the transportation, domestic and industrial sectors towards CO2 emissions. It is concluded that energy consumption in industrial and agricultural sectors leads to economic growth alongside the associated CO2 emissions. On the other hand, the contribution of domestic and transportation sectors in economic growth is trivial with significant CO2 emissions. This paper provides novel empirical evidence of impacts of energy mismanagement at sectoral levels, economic output and environmental consequences; alongside policy recommendations for sustainable energy-based development on the national scale. Phase change materials (PCMs) have a large number of applications for thermal energy storage (TES) and temperature reduction in buildings due to their thermal characteristics and latent heat storage capabilities. The thermal mass of typical brick walls can be substantially increased using a suitable PCM primarily based on phase change temperature and heat of fusion for different weather conditions in summer and winter. This study proposed a novel dual-layer PCM configuration for brick walls to maintain human comfort for hot and cold climatic conditions in Islamabad, Pakistan. Numerical simulations were performed using Ansys Fluent for dual PCMs layered within a brick wall for June and January with melting temperatures of 29 °C and 13 °C. This study examined and discussed the charging and discharging cycles of PCMs over an extended period (one month) to establish whether the efficacy of PCMs is hindered due to difficulties in discharging. The results show that the combined use of both PCMs stated above provides better human comfort with reduced energy requirements in Islamabad throughout the year than using a single PCM (29 °C) for summer or winter (13 °C) alone. The generation and use of energy are significant contributors to CO2 emissions. Globally, approximately 30% to 40% of all energy consumption can be directly or indirectly linked to buildings. Nearly half of energy usage in buildings is linked to maintaining the thermal comfort of the inhabitants. Therefore, finding solutions that are not only technically but also economically feasible is of utmost importance. Though much research has been conducted to address this issue, most solutions are still costly for developing countries to implement practically. This study endeavors to find a less expensive yet straightforward methodology to achieve thermal comfort while conserving energy. This study takes a broader view of multiple habitat-related CO2 emission issues in developing regions and describes a hybrid solution to address them. New technologies and innovative concepts are being globally examined to benefit from the considerable potential of PCMs and their role in thermal energy storage (TES) applications for buildings. The current study numerically investigates the thermal response of a hybrid building envelope consisting of PCM and local organic waste materials for low-cost low-energy buildings. The local organic waste materials used are those whose disposal is usually done by burning, resulting in an immense amount of greenhouse gases. In the first phase, different waste materials are characterized to determine their thermophysical properties. In the second phase, a low-cost, commonly available PCM calcium chloride hexahydrate, CaCl2·6H2O, is integrated with a brick and corn husk wall to enhance the thermal storage in the building envelope to minimize energy consumption. Temperature distribution plots are primarily used for analysis. The results show a marked improvement in thermal comfort by maintaining a maximum indoor temperature of 27 °C when construction is performed with a 6% corn husk composite material embedded with the PCM, while under similar conditions, the standard brick construction maintained a 31 °C indoor temperature. As non-renewable conventional fossil fuel sources are depleting day by day, researchers are continually finding new ways of producing and utilizing alternative, renewable, and reliable fuels. Due to conventional technologies, the environment has been degraded seriously, which profoundly impacts life on earth. To reduce the emissions caused by running the compression ignition engines, waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel is one of the best alternative fuels locally available in all parts of the world. Different study results are reviewed with a clear focus on combustion, performance, and emission characteristics, and the impact on engine durability. Moreover, the environmental and economic impacts are also reviewed in this study. When determining the combustion characteristics of WCO biodiesel, the cylinder peak pressure value increases and the heat release rate and ignition delay period decreases. In performance characteristics, brake-specific fuel consumption increases while brake-specific energy consumption, brake power, and torque decrease. WCO biodiesel cuts down the emissions value by 85% due to decreased hydrocarbon, SO2, CO, and smoke emissions in the exhaust that will effectively save the environment. However, CO2 and NOx generally increase when compared to diesel. The overall economic impact of production on the utilization of this resource is also elaborated. Ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) systems under hierarchical connection schemes (HCSs) linked to AC grids with different voltage levels (500 and 1000 kV) have been a great concern for power utilities to transfer bulk power. They have some operating issues like cascaded commutation failures and longer fault recovery time under certain fault conditions. Since STATCOM has the ability to effectively regulate AC busbar voltages, thus it is considered in this paper to improve the operating characteristics of UHVDC-HCS systems. To further improve the operating characteristics, a coordinated control between an UHVDC-HCS system and STATCOM is presented. To validate the effectiveness of coordinated control, the comparison between different control modes such as reactive power control (Q-control) and voltage control (V-control) in the outer loop control of STATCOM are conducted in detail. Various indices like commutation failure immunity index (CFII) and commutation failure probability index (CFPI) are also comprehensively evaluated in order to investigate robustness of the adopted coordinated control. An UHVDC-HCS system with multiple STATCOMs on the inverter side (500 kV bus) is developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The impact of coordinated control on commutation failure phenomena and fault recovery time during single and three phase AC faults is analyzed. The analysis shows that coordinated control with V-control mode of STATCOM exhibits better performance in enhancing the operating characteristics of UHVDC-HCS system by improving the CFII, effectively reducing the CFPI and fault recovery time under various AC faults.
