Low insulation strength at the oil–gas surface due to oil leakage and partial discharge of oil-immersed power equipment is a major threat to the safe and reliable operation of power systems. This paper investigates the initiation and development of the oil–gas surface discharge. The oil–gas surface discharge test platform was established, and discharge tests were carried out at different gap distances (1–2.5 mm). By coupling the electric field and flow field, the multi-layer dielectric discharge streamer model was built, and the characteristics of charge and electric field distribution at different gap distances were studied. The test results show that the liquid surface between the electrodes rises during the discharge process. Furthermore, the surface discharge voltage exceeds the air gap discharge voltage. With the simulation analysis, the oil–gas surface discharge is a typical streamer development process. Under 50 kV applied voltage and 2.5 mm gap distance, the average development speed of the streamer is 12.5 km/s. The larger the gap distance is, the greater the average streamer development speed is. The recording and numerical simulation of the discharge process are of great significance for exploring the mechanism of oil–gas surface discharge, optimizing the discharge process, and diagnosing partial discharges. The insulation property at high voltage frequencies has become a tough challenge with the rapid development of high-voltage and high-frequency power electronics. In this paper, the electrical treeing behavior of silicone rubber (SIR) is examined and determined at various voltage frequencies, ranging from 50 Hz to 130 kHz. The results show that the initiation voltage of electrical trees decreased by 27.9% monotonically, and they became denser when the voltage frequency increased. A bubble-shaped deterioration phenomenon was observed when the voltage frequency exceeded 100 kHz. We analyze the typical treeing growth pattern at 50 Hz (including pine-like treeing growth and bush-like treeing growth) and the bubble-growing pattern at 130 kHz. Bubbles grew exponentially within several seconds. Moreover, bubble cavities were detected in electrical tree channels at 50 Hz. Combined with the bubble-growing characteristics at 130 kHz, a potential growing model for electrical trees and bubbles in SIR is proposed to explain the growing patterns at various voltage frequencies. The recognition of the creepage discharge development process of oil–paper insulation under AC–DC combined voltage is the basis for fault monitoring and diagnosis of converter transformers; however, only a few related studies are available. In this study, the AC–DC combined voltage with a ratio of 1:1 was used to develop a recognition method for the creepage discharge development process of an oil–paper insulation under a cylinder–plate electrode structure. First, the pulse current method was used to collect the discharge signals in the creepage discharge development process. Then, 24 characteristic parameters were extracted from four types of creepage discharge characteristic spectra after dimensionality reduction. Finally, based on the online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) algorithm, these characteristic parameters were used to recognize the development stage of the creepage discharge of the oil–paper insulation. The results showed that when the size of the sample training set used in the OS-ELM algorithm is close to the number of hidden layer neurons, a high recognition accuracy can be obtained, and the type of activation function has little influence on the recognition accuracy. Four stages of the creepage discharge development process were recognized using the OS-ELM algorithm; the trend was the same as that of the characteristic parameters of the entire creepage discharge development process. The recognition accuracy was 91.4%. The algorithm has a high computing speed and high accuracy and can train data in batches. The reactive current can be reduced effectively by decreasing the frequency of the voltage in partial discharge (PD) test, especially for equipment with large capacitance. Thus, the cost and volume of the test power supply can be economized. To figure out the difference of PD characteristics in transformer oil between rated alternating-current (AC) frequency (50 Hz) and low frequency, tests are conducted from rated AC frequency to very low frequency (0.1 Hz) based on impulse current method. The results show that with the decrease of frequency, the inception voltage increases. The maximum and mean magnitude of discharge and pulse repetition rate first increase slightly, then decrease obviously. The main features of the variation of phase resolved PD (PRPD) patterns, discharge statistical patterns (phase distribution of maximum and mean discharge magnitude, pulse repetition rate qmax–φ, qmean–φ, n–φ; and number distribution of discharge magnitude n–q), and their characteristic parameters (skewness Sk+, Sk−; kurtosis Ku+, Ku−; asymmetry Asy; and correlation coefficient Cc) are depicted in detail, which should be paid attention to when using low frequency voltage. The inner mechanism for these variations is discussed from the aspects of the influence on electric field distribution and discharge process of frequency. Additionally, the variation trend of PD characteristics with the decrease of frequency can provide more information about insulation defect, which can be the supplement for discharge mode recognition.
