Modular-integrated Construction (MiC) is an emerging construction technique promoted in the building sector for high productivity and low waste emission in the construction phase; yet, the standardized modules also bring new challenges, such as balancing passive energy efficiency and spatial daylight autonomy, to the operational phase. This paper proposes a Symmetric Skeleton Grammar-based Multi-Objective Optimization (SSG-MOO) method to formulate parametric MiC envelopes and detailed layout, with the two objective functions being energy efficiency and interior daylight performance in the operational phase. Pareto optima of the SSG-MOO, computed by the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, are generally verified and analyzed in three levels, i.e., MOO's solution space, SSG layout, and MiC design parameters. A case study of MiC residential building in Hong Kong demonstrated the SSG-MOO method through five new passive MiC designs (i.e., spatial reorganization of three architectural modules, and parameter tuning of the envelops and corridors), achieving up to 0.42% energy savings and 9.71% spatial daylight autonomy improvement compared to the baseline design. The contribution of this paper is two-fold, including a novel and sound SSG-MOO formulation for parametric MiC designs, and offering time-efficient and evidence-based design tactics for MiC designers and industrial practitioners to push boundaries of MiC. Buildings are responsible for about 92% of the total energy end-use in Hong Kong, of which above 70% is from the commercial sector. Most of the buildings in Hong Kong are high-rise, and approximately 15% of the total building stock is commercial buildings. Despite the considerable improvement in the understanding of the life cycle energy use of office buildings, there is still a lack of research into the life cycle energy demand of high-rise office buildings. Such knowledge is however essential for facilitating building energy conservation in the high-rise urban environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the life cycle energy use of high-rise office buildings. The research was carried out through a critical literature review and case studies of ten real-life high-rise office buildings in Hong Kong. Results show that the life cycle energy consumption is 51.78–73.64 GJ/m 2 over the 50-year study period. Building operation consumes 78–89% and the rest (i.e. 11–22%) is taken by the embodied energy. Despite the distinction in terms of the amount of embodied energy between high-rise buildings and low-rise counterparts, no clear correlation is found between building height and embodied energy intensity. Moreover, energy use for material manufacturing and transport should be prioritised in reducing the embodied energy, of which the transport energy needs to be taken into extra consideration for the case of Hong Kong. The findings should inform construction industry participants of the significant potential in reducing the embodied energy of high-rise office buildings. The paper profiles the life cycle energy use of high-rise office buildings and should be important for the policy formulation towards the holistic energy conservation in high-rise buildings over their lifespans. Whilst designing cool small neighborhoods (called 'cool spots' in this paper) remains an enormous technical challenge, clients and their designers are also confronting with the perpetual burden of the financial sphere. This research aims to develop a novel methodological approach for designers to search for affordable cool spots in dense urban areas. It does so by conducting genetic combinatorial optimizations augmented by Random Forest (RF) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithms. What is particularly innovative is to develop a mass-based generative design approach to produce neighborhood options for the subsequent combinatorial optimization. The methodology is tested in a real-world urban renewal project in Hong Kong, which is epitomized by high density and hot and humid weather in the summer. The results show that the design approach can automatically identify high-performance schemes of cool spot design, reducing the daily average thermophysiological equivalent temperature from averagely 29.76 °C to at lowest 29.59 °C, and decreasing the construction cost by 82.57%. With proper translation, the approach can serve as a useful and robust design assisting tool for designing and developing cool and cost-aware buildings and neighborhoods in urban areas. Energy consumption of lift systems is one key issue in modern high-rise buildings, drawing property owners' attention and accounting for 6% of total electricity consumption by end-use in Hong Kong. A Benchmarking Energy Performance Indicator (BEPI), , measured in J.kg−1.m−1 and proposed by the first author of this paper for lift installations is mentioned in the Technical Guidelines of the Building Energy Code , as one emerging good engineering practice. BEPI is a fair parameter for comparing energy performance of lifts irrespective of their brand, model, travel, speed, capacity and control. It considers energy performance due to both the motor drive efficiency and traffic control intelligence. However, one main obstacle to make it statutory is the lacking of a generic monitor able to retrieve three sets of real time data (normally unavailable on an existing lift) to compute the BEPI, namely energy consumption, instantaneous car load and traveling distance, and to collect ample data statistically reliable enough to determine an acceptable threshold value. This paper describes the development of a proof-of-concept prototype BEPI monitor by giving full technical details on the rationale and history of development, the hardware components, software framework, and updated numerical results of one implementation inside the headquarters of Electrical & Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of HKSAR. Experiences in installing and calibrating those external sensors that make the whole system non-disturbing to normal lift operation, as well as the procedures in computing the BEPI, are discussed in greater details. It has been shown that the BEPI is traffic dependent but the weekly average of it is relatively stable, confirming it may be robust enough for benchmarking purpose. Inter-building effect (IBE), which refers to the shading effect from surrounding buildings, plays an important role in building energy use in high-density cities. However, it is customary to neglect the IBE during energy simulation. Four issues are observed on previous research: 1) it has been controversial whether the IBE significantly affects energy consumption, 2) most studies used low-rise or medium-rise residential buildings as references, 3) most studies were conducted with hypothesised buildings, 4) most studies did not consider window blinds effect on IBE. These issues inhibit the theoretical understanding of high-rise building energy performance in cities and jeopardise the achievement of accurate simulation. This paper thus aims to investigate the IBE on the energy use of high-rise office buildings in Hong Kong as a typical high-density city. The IBE of ten selected real-life office buildings in their real-life communities was analysed. Four scenarios were compared, namely, simulation of building with both IBE and window blinds (base case), simulation of building with IBE but no window blinds, simulation of isolated building with window blinds, and simulation of isolated building without window blinds. The results show that the IBE influences the total energy use by up to 13.1%. Compared with the base case, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) and the lighting consumption deviation with different scenarios fluctuated largely, ranging from −11.8% to 18.8% in HVAC consumption, and from 0.1% to −27.6% in lighting consumption. An offset effect was found between the decreased lighting consumption and the increased HVAC consumption. From the floor-level analysis, with real communities, lighting energy use decreased with height among all the buildings generally. A multi-variant regression model was established to evaluate the relationship between IBE variables and building energy deviation caused by IBE. In addition, the results conclude that shading blinds cannot be overlooked when examining IBE on building energy use. Semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) windows, which can not only admit daylight into space but also generate electricity, have been widely used as a part of building components in recent years. This paper compares the overall energy performance between STPV windows and commonly used energy-efficient windows, viz. double-pane and Low-E windows, in Hong Kong. A new type of see-through amorphous silicon (a-Si) photovoltaic (PV) module was adopted, and this PV module has higher efficiency compared with other commercialized a-Si PV modules with the same visible transmittance. First, a series of testing were carried out to get the technical parameters of this PV module. Second, the simulation models were developed theoretically, and power, thermal and daylighting performance of different windows were analyzed by EnergyPlus accordingly together with the input weather data of typical meteorological year (TMY) in Hong Kong. Then, based on the simulated energy uses of the air-conditioning and the artificial lighting of the room, as well as the power generation of the STPV windows themselves, the overall energy performance was evaluated. The results indicate that STPV glazing can save up to 18% and 16% total electricity per year respectively in comparison with the clear single and double-pane glazings in cooling dominated areas like Hong Kong. The overall energy performance of Low-E glazing and STPV glazing is very close to each other, which means that STPV glazing is quite energy-efficient. In Hong Kong, southwest is the best orientation for power generation for STPV windows and south is the optimum orientation for STPV window installation in terms of achieving the best overall energy performance. Increase in cooling energy usage of the residential sector in Hong Kong has been moderate in the most recent ten years (2004–2013). Factors and drivers responsible for this are of interest to policy makers in search of performance improvement but such information is not available in extant literature. This paper reviews the policy instruments introduced in Hong Kong during this period of time and examines the different engineering factors contributing to improvements in cooling energy efficiency. Whether the policy instruments have been instrumental in bringing about changes in engineering design and thus improvement in cooling energy efficiency is evaluated on the basis of the equipment and building envelope characteristics of 64 residential developments in Hong Kong. Different statistical analyses reveal that the use of more energy efficient room air-conditioning units (COP), smaller window-to-wall ratios (WWR) and walls with higher U-values are the engineering factors (WallU) that have contributed to moderation of growth of energy consumption; these were driven by policies introduced by the Hong Kong Government. Regarding the sensitivity of the three engineering factors, it was found that COP was the highest amounting to 0.455, followed in descending order by WallU and WWR. Nearly 60% of electrical energy use in Hong Kong is for space conditioning during summer months. The paper investigates the impact of design-related variables on outdoor micro level daytime heat island effect in residential developments in Hong Kong. The paper hypothesizes that the differences in outdoor temperatures within and between residential developments can be explained by the impact of design-related variables on the overall environment. Case studies of three large housing estates reveal urban heat island effect (UHI) in the order of 1.5 °C within an estate, and 1.0 °C between estates. The results indicate that energy efficient designs can be achieved by manipulating surface albedo, sky view factor and total height to floor area ratio (building massing) while maximizing cross ventilation. Hong Kong suffers from an intense urban heat island (UHI) effect of up to 4 °C as a result of compact urban form and highly urbanized land cover. Enhancing the cooling efficiency of urban greenery is essential for improving the microclimate in high-density cities. This paper aims to delineate design strategies for urban greenery to maximize thermal benefits and mitigate the daytime UHI effect. Two site-specific design strategies for tree planting in the urban environment are proposed. The sky view factor (SVF)-based design approach and the wind-path design approach are evaluated in the neighbourhood scale in two climate-sensitive areas with different urban morphologies. Observed data and simulation results indicated that the cooling effect of urban trees is highly associated with SVF. Air temperature reduction (a 1.5 °C reduction) is the most profound for the high SVF scenario, whereas substantial radiation shading ( T mrt reduced to 34 °C) is detected in areas with medium-low SVFs. The modelling study also showed that the cooling of air temperature and sensible heat were twice as high for vegetation arranged in wind corridors than those for leeward areas. This paper presents a combined daylight, airflow network and building energy simulation of a Public Rental Housing (PRH) development in Hong Kong to fulfil the requirement of the local green building guidance. The numerical modelling results are partly validated by on-site measurements during the period with the highest monthly average outdoor temperature. Different ventilation control strategies are simulated to optimize natural ventilation performance. The simulation results show that the full-day ventilation strategy contributes to a lower average and peak indoor temperatures compared to the non-ventilation and night-ventilation scenarios. The indoor operative temperature of a worst-case vacant flat lies under the upper 80% acceptability limits in ASHRAE 55 during 67.5% of the modelled period in July. On the other side, at least 95.6% of the habitable area in the case buildings is predicted to experience a higher average daylight factor of 1% compared with the local green building guidance. Furthermore, the energy saving potential of the combined natural ventilation and daylight strategies is anticipated to be 51.9% for air-conditioning and 8.3% for lighting compared to a baseline building, respectively. • A POE-integrated simulation method is proposed to address energy occupant behavior. • Opening windows and operating AC were found to co-exist which affects simulation accuracy. • The new method improves energy simulation accuracy by 14% for domestic areas. • The method improves energy simulation accuracy by 16% for total building areas. Occupant behavior plays a critical role in building energy consumption, particularly in residential buildings. However, occupant behavior is complicated and varies significantly from case to case. Also, energy modeling of high-rise buildings is far less explored than that of low- or medium-rise buildings. This paper aims to improve accuracy in building energy simulation by utilizing Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) data to calibrate energy model. Drawing on a review of the literature of occupant behavior and building energy modeling, the paper provides a calibration method of integrating POE data into an energy model, which is demonstrated using a real-life typical 40-storey residential building in Hong Kong. The developed method addresses seven updated input parameters, namely, schedule, devices, air-conditioners, windows, lights, domestic hot water, and cooking. By comparing the two energy modeling processes, i.e. with and without POE input, and their resultant estimated energy consumption, the paper quantifies the impact of occupant behavior on building energy consumption. Annual metered data together with energy bills obtained from the POE were utilized to validate the models. The results show that the use of the developed POE-integrated method helped to improve accuracy in energy consumption prediction by 14% for the total building floor area and by 16% for the total residential area. From examining the impacts of the seven input parameters, the paper reveals the key energy use sensitive occupant behaviors within high-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong. These include: the number of residents in each unit; adoption of window type and split type of air-conditioners; window and air condition operation modes; cooking time on weekdays and weekends; and time spent on hot water showering. The developed method can assist building designers and services engineers to estimate building energy use more accurately and provides a scenario analysis tool for clients and facility managers to develop effective energy conservation strategies. Abstract: This paper presents a simplified energy performance assessment method for existing buildings in cooling season, which is based on energy bill disaggregation and energy performance analysis. This method requests very limited building energy data and can effectively assess the energy performance at building and system levels, and disaggregate the whole-building consumption into consumptions of three groups of end-uses. This method is based on two basic energy balance principles, i.e., the electricity consumption balances at building level and the cooling energy balances between demand side and supply side of HVAC systems. An optimization algorithm is developed to establish best possible cooling energy balances by minimizing the balance residuals and therefore to disaggregate the energy consumption of different users. The performance of the proposed method was validated in two existing buildings in Hong Kong and Beijing. The results, including the disaggregated energy consumptions and the key energy performance indicators of HVAC system, agreed well with the “measured” data in mechanical cooling months. Abstract: In sub-tropical city of Hong Kong where summer is hot and humid, the usage of outdoor spaces is often hindered due to thermal discomfort. In order to improve the thermal comfort of the outdoor environment and to make urban outdoor spaces delightful places for people to use and enjoy, better understanding of the thermal perception of people is needed. This paper presents the results of an outdoor thermal comfort study conducted in Hong Kong. The findings of the study reveal that air temperature, wind speed and solar radiation intensity are influential factors in determining the thermal sensation of people outdoor. Based on our analysis, the neutral physiological equivalent temperature (PET) in summer in Hong Kong is around 28°C. Under shaded condition, a wind speed of 0.9–1.3m/s is needed for a person in light clothing to achieve neutral thermal sensation in an urban environment. This understanding can contribute towards establishing wind performance standards for thermal comfort in hot and humid tropical and sub-tropical cities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In Hong Kong, conventional air-conditioning (AC) systems cause a high energy consumption and poor indoor thermal comfort. This paper investigated the AC load profiles of three typical local commercial buildings, i.e. office, hotel and retail, and examined the energy consumption of liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) for these buildings. Simulation results showed that the cooling load contributed to more than 98% of total annual load, with high latent load proportion from March to September. The high reheating ratio, i.e. from 60% to 90%, is found to be the main reason for the poor thermal comfort. Therefore, the LDCS which could handle sensible and latent loads separately was proposed. However, the electricity-driven LDCS was found not suitable for local commercial buildings. significant energy saving could be achieved by the solar-assisted LDCS system with thermal storage, when the installation area for solar collectors is larger than the minimum required one, i.e. 9.7m2/(kWm−2) for office and 12.7m2/(kWm−2) for hotel buildings. Energy saving of different system types with different installation areas was also studied. The solar-assisted LDCS shows more energy saving in winter but less in summer. Abstract: Evacuated tube solar water heaters are increasingly in use in Hong Kong because of their good thermal efficiency and high water temperature achievable as compared to the flat-plate solar water heaters. But so far their thermal performance has not been systematically evaluated and therefore not well known to the users. This paper reports our experimental and numerical works on evaluating the performance of the two common types of evacuated tube solar water heaters for domestic hot-water applications. These are the single-phase open thermosyphon system and the two-phase closed thermosyphon system. Our results show that the daily and annual thermal performance of the two-phase closed thermosyphon solar collector is slightly better than the single-phase open thermosyphon design. But the payback periods of the two are relatively the same because of the higher initial costs of the two-phase closed thermosyphon collector system. Although economically they are less attractive than the flat-plate type collector system, they are suitable for applications in advanced systems with higher temperature demands. Abstract: The concern on climate change leads to growing demand for minimization of energy use. As building is one of the largest energy consuming sectors, it is essential to study the impact of climate change on building energy performance. In this regard, building energy simulation software is a useful tool. A set of appropriate typical weather files is one of the key factors towards successful building energy simulation. This paper reports the work of developing a set of weather data files for subtropical Hong Kong, taking into the effect of future climate change. Projected monthly mean climate changes from a selected General Circulation Model for three future periods under two emission scenarios were integrated into an existing typical meteorological year weather file by a morphing method. Through this work, six sets of future weather files for subtropical Hong Kong were produced. A typical office building and a residential flat were modeled using building simulation program EnergyPlus. Hourly building energy simulations were carried out. The simulated results indicate that there will be substantial increase in A/C energy consumption under the impact of future climate change, ranging from 2.6% to 14.3% and from 3.7% to 24% for office building and residential flat, respectively. Abstract: It becomes popular to use computer simulation technique to evaluate the performance of energy utilizations in buildings. The hourly weather data as simulation input is a crucial factor for the successful energy system simulation, and obtaining an accurate set of weather data is necessary to represent the long-term typical weather conditions throughout a year. This paper introduces a stochastic approach, which is called the first order multivariate Markov chain model, to generate the annual weather data for better evaluating and sizing different energy systems. The process for generating the weather data time series from the multivariate Markov transition probability matrices is described using 15-years actual hourly weather data of Hong Kong. The ability of this new model for retaining the statistical properties of the generated weather data series is examined and compared with the current existing TMY and TRY data. The main statistical properties used for this purpose are mean value, standard deviation, maximum value, minimum value, frequency distribution probability and persistency probability of the weather data sequence. The comparison between the observed weather data and the synthetically generated ones shows that the statistical characteristics of the developed set of weather data are satisfactorily preserved and the developed set of weather data can predict and evaluate different energy systems more accurately. Abstract: Urban heat island can significantly increase the demand for cooling of buildings in cities. This paper investigates one of the main causes of the urban heat island phenomenon, i.e. reduced city ventilation. Two simple Hong Kong city models with relatively complex terrain were considered here under different atmospheric conditions. A 3D RNG k–ɛ turbulence model was used for modeling turbulence effects. The simulation results showed that the influence of thermal stratification can be significant on city ventilation driven partially by thermal buoyancy. When the wind speed is relatively large, the impact of thermal stratification on air flow in city street canyons is minor. When the wind speed is small relative to the buoyancy force, the airflow in the street canyons is dependent on thermal stratification. When there is an adverse vertical temperature gradient, the greater the instability, the stronger the vertical mixing and the greater the flow rate caused by turbulence. The heat and pollutants can easily accumulate under stable atmospheric conditions when there is only a weak background wind or none at all. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The purposes of this paper are to analyze winter energy use of residential buildings in different cities of China, and to figure out the influence factors of winter residential energy use. The investigated residences were located in seven typical cities of five architectural thermotechnical design zones. Questionnaire surveys revealed building characteristics, household characteristics, the utilization of domestic appliances, and thermal environment in winter. Winter energy consumption in different cities bears obvious regional characteristics. In south China, Hong Kong has the largest mean household energy use amount, and Changsha and Chongqing follow Hong Kong; Kunming in the warm zone has the small energy use. In north cities, if district space heating is excluded from total energy use, Urumqi and Xi’an have the energy use at the smallest level, but space heating use is very huge. The energy use amounts of space heating of Tangshan, Urumqi and Xi’an are several times as large as the amounts of all the end uses in the southern cities. The analysis on influence factors of winter energy use are made for Chongqing and Hong Kong, respectively, by Quantification Theory I, and the results show there exist obvious differences in influence factors between the two cities. Abstract: The provision of balcony to the living room of a residential flat offers a number of merits including improved view enjoyment, enhanced ventilation and increased planting space. In addition, a balcony can act as an overhang and provide solar shading as well as electricity saving of the air-conditioning system. This paper reports the findings on the energy and environmental impact due to the provision of a balcony. In this study, a typical residential flat with balcony constructed at the living room was modeled and the energy performance was investigated with the use of the typical weather data set of a subtropical city, Hong Kong. The effects of balcony''s orientation and glazing material of window were also evaluated. It was found that the residential flats facing various orientations (N, E, S, W, NE, SE, SW and NW) can offer substantial energy saving in air-conditioning system due to the shading effect of balcony. The building case with southwest facing balcony and clear glass glazed window gave the highest saving percentage of 12.3% in annual air-conditioning consumption. In terms of cost payback period, the values were estimated as 25.9 years (based on extra construction cost of a balcony) and over 100 years (based on extra purchasing cost), respectively. On the other hand, the energy payback period was 22.4 years for this building case. The provision of balcony to the living room of residential flat was found environmentally feasible in Hong Kong. Abstract: The shading-type building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) claddings can act as power generators as well as external shading devices of a building, which reduce the energy consumption of the building. However, there is little information about energy impacts of different tilt angles of the shading-type BIPV claddings. By considering the typical meteorological conditions of Hong Kong, the energy performance of the shading-type BIPV claddings, in terms of the electricity generation and the cooling load reduction, is analyzed in this paper. The optimum tilt angle of PV modules for maximum electricity generation is found to be 20° instead of local latitude. Combining electricity generation and cooling load reduction, it can be concluded that the optimum tilt angles for the first type of the shading-type BIPV claddings vary from 30° to 50°, while the optimum tilt angle for the second type is 0°. Abstract: Double skin façade can be defined as a building façade covering one or several stories with multiple skins. The skins may be air tight or ventilated. With sophisticated study and design, buildings constructed with double skin façade can have better thermal performance than the conventional single skin façade. This paper reports the findings on the energy performance of double skin façade applied to a typical office building under the climatic condition in Hong Kong. An experimental setup was established and the measured data were used to verify the theoretical model developed via the EnergyPlus simulation program. The validated model was then used to evaluate the energy performance of double skin façade with various configurations including glazing type (clear, absorptive or reflective glass), glazing position (inner or outer pane) and glazing layers (single or double glazing material). The results indicate that a double skin façade system with single clear glazing as the inner pane and double reflective glazing as the outer pane can provide an annual saving of around 26% in building cooling energy, as compared to a conventional single skin façade with single absorptive glazing. However, the long payback period of 81 years makes the double skin façade system economically infeasible. Support and motivation are needed from the local government in order to foster successful and widespread application of the double skin façade system in buildings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A benchmark study of the energy efficiency of private office buildings in Hong Kong was conducted in 2002 because energy efficiency was declining. In the study, private office buildings were divided into five user groups. For each group, a multiple regression model was developed to find the relationship between Energy Use Intensities (EUIs) and other factors, such as operating hours, for normalization and benchmarking purposes. In this paper we make use of the regression results to study the energy efficiency of private office buildings by different grades. In Hong Kong, office buildings are divided into three grades (A, B, and C) based on the quality of the facility, which is reflected in rental values; a Grade A office building denotes expensive luxury. We found that the EUI of Grade A office buildings is the highest, consuming over 50% of the total energy used in office buildings. Recently, the annual EUI of office buildings has improved even though Grade A floor space is increasing. This may be due to the promotion of the energy efficiency program launched in the last decade. Abstract: Mandatory energy codes to curb energy use of residential buildings have been formally launched in China for more than two decades but little has been publicized in literature. Similar codes are not available for residential buildings in Hong Kong, but most residential buildings in Hong Kong, especially public housing estates, are HK-BEAM certified to demonstrate their compliance with regulatory and basic design requirements. Given HK-BEAM is internationally recognized and there are doubts about the effectiveness of the China codes, how the energy efficiency of the HK-BEAM certified buildings compare with buildings in compliance with the China codes is of interest to most building designers and policy makers. This paper describes how the energy efficiency of a case study building in compliance with the China codes compare with the one in compliance with HK-BEAM. The energy simulation by HTB2 and BECRES reveal that the case study building in compliance with the China codes is 51.1% better in energy use. In the study, the relative impact of each compliance criterion on energy use and cooling load has been quantified by sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity values indicate that energy use is most sensitive to air-conditioning operation hours, indoor design temperature, coefficient of performance (COP) of the room air-conditioners (RAC) units, and the envelop characteristics. The results of this study indicate that a HK-BEAM certified building cannot satisfy the China codes requirements. This provides good reference to the policy makers, the building owners, and to the China and Hong Kong Governments when considering reciprocal recognition of building energy codes. In this paper, we construct a unique database for 1228 residential buildings in Hong Kong to investigate how the spatial features of these residential buildings affect the electricity consumption in the communal area. We choose Hong Kong for this analysis as the city owns a large number of standard-type residential buildings managed by the public institution, which could be affected strongly by environmental policies. Both the machine learning method, based on the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO), and econometric regressions are adopted to analyse the data. We first utilize the machine learning LASSO technique to identify the most relevant factors for the subsequent econometric analysis. Our results show that the electricity demand for relatively low consumption building types, such as Twin Tower, is 6% lower than that of the high consumption building types. Newly constructed buildings usually belong to the medium consumption types, with the estimated monthly electricity consumption per apartment in communal areas to be around 50.2 kWh on average in 2020. These findings shed light on the nexus between spatial features and energy use for complex buildings, potentially contributing to the better crafting of energy-saving policy and the improvement of residential building programmes. The zero carbon building (ZCB) approach has been adopted in many cities and regions as an important government strategy for addressing climate change, achieving a low carbon economy, and uplifting the quality of people's life. However, there is yet a lack of uptake of ZCB in high-rise high-density contexts, and mystery exists about its feasibility and societal acceptance. This paper aims to demystify ZCB development in high-rise high-density cities by identifying and examining the drivers, barriers and strategies within Hong Kong as a typical case. Based on the systems theory that addresses ZCBs as complex systems, the research was conducted through a questionnaire survey with 219 effective responses from and six follow-up focus group meetings with industry stakeholders. Key drivers and barriers were systematically identified, covering economic, legislative, cultural, supply chain, geographical, and skill and knowledge aspects. Specifically, economic drivers and barriers were found most significant. A novel multi-level framework of strategies was further derived, integrating micro-level measures, meso -level initiatives and macro-level visions for achieving ZCBs in high-rise high-density cities. Abstract: PV ventilated glazing technology for application in warm climate provides energy saving opportunities through the reduction in air-conditioning load, the daylight utilization, and the green electric power generation. In a working environment, the use of semi-transparent a-Si glazing is deemed better than the one with non-transparent c-Si solar cells. This paper reports an evaluation of its integrated performance using a small office room in Hong Kong as an example. An energy model of a PV ventilated window system is first introduced. Based on this together with the TMY weather data of Hong Kong and the daylight simulation capability of the EnergyPlus program, the overall performance analysis have been executed for different window orientations. It was found that a solar cell transmittance in the range of 0.45–0.55 could achieve the best electricity saving. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Near-extreme outside dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are essential for the design of building HVAC systems. Coincident design temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE may not fully allow engineers to design an HVAC system that can match a risk level desired for the problem at hand. A rational method is therefore presented in this paper for the proper selection of coincident climate design conditions, which is based on the theory of probability. An average statistic risk level has been proved to be approximately equal to the annual percentile of coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures for HVAC systems whose thermal time constant is less than 1h. An algorithm is also developed to determine the contours of equal risk. Representative coincident design dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are obtained through statistic analysis of the 15 years of weather records in Hong Kong. These rationally derived outside design temperatures are compared with the coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper firstly presents a case study on analyzing the electrical load profiles recorded in a Hong Kong hotel over a period of 12 months to examine the potential energy saving opportunities (ESOs) in its building services installations. The case study is followed by a report of the survey results of energy and water use in 36 quality hotels in Hong Kong. Finally, a regression analysis where the surveyed energy and water use data were correlated to a number of hotel background or operational parameters to search for suitable energy and water use performance explanatory indicators is presented. The survey results depict a diversified energy and water use situation in Hong Kong’s hotels, but the regression analysis indicates that, while some of the correlations obtained are weak, there do exist a few strong energy and water explanatory indicators. By designing and carrying out in-situ monitoring campaigns respectively in Cambridge, Hong Kong and Shanghai, we present in this paper a cross-regional analysis of actual building envelope performance in these three climatic regions that operate under different energy efficiency policies. Compared with conventional tabulated data, information gleaned from the method of in-situ monitoring shows lower uncertainty and higher precision, especially when the wall has good thermal properties. By comparing practices in different regions and with accurate post-occupancy thermal data, the analytical results further show that the effectiveness of building-related policies on energy performance varies across regions. The application of passive design strategies is crucial at the early architectural design stage for building energy use minimization. However, the time-varying effectiveness of passive design strategies in responding to future climate change in hot and humid climates are rather limited in the literature. This paper aims to examine the dynamic effectiveness of passive design strategies for residential buildings in Hong Kong under the context of future climate change. Using the newly developed hourly weather data and adaptive comfort standard model, the dynamic effectiveness of viable passive design strategies for residential buildings are evaluated over time in the 21st century by plotting Givoni building bio-climatic charts (BBCC) and simulation-based sensitivity analyses in a validated EnergyPlus model. Results show that solar protection strategies are still the highly sensitive strategies for building energy performance and the effectiveness of external windows' airtightness is expected to increase up to 329% by the end of this century, whereas the cooling potential of ventilation utilization will significantly decrease over time. When the different combination of sensitive passive design parameters is implemented onto the baseline residential building model for different climate scenarios, the annual and peak cooling load can be reduced up to 56.7% and 64.5%, respectively. The climate changes for solar radiation, temperature and wind speed were summarised, and their daily total, average, extreme, and/or deviation values were presented. The typical weather data developed by the ground measurements of different times and period lengths (within the 37 years) determined the cooling load of a representative building in the Hong Kong, and the outcomes were compared to that of the yearly data. As urban green space, green roof has been increasingly installed in cities mainly for amenities, temperature regulation and energy conservation. Nevertheless, in subtropical urban setting and during winter, the thermal and radiation behaviours of green roofs, especially the intensive type, have remained poorly understood. This paper examined the effect of a woodland-type intensive green roof (IGR) on the roof-level microclimate by comparing temperature and radiation parameters against a reference bare roof (BR). In-situ microclimatic monitoring was conducted on an IGR and BR pair in subtropical Hong Kong throughout a winter. Using objective selection criteria, 30 sampled days with representative winter weather, namely sunny, cloudy and rainy conditions, were identified for statistical analyses of interactions among key factors. The results showed that the woodland canopy intercepted about 90% of incoming solar radiation regardless of weather, thus substantially suppressing the energy source of passive warming, and instead creating undesirable cooling of ground surface and canopy-enclosed air. Surface and air temperatures on IGR were lower than BR, with the highest mean difference reaching 2.77 °C and 2.27 °C respectively in sunny daytime. The vegetation canopy retained some but insufficient outgoing thermal radiation to counteract the observed cooling. Limited solar inputs could only slightly warm the soil which experienced heat loss in cloudy weather to raise indoor heating load. The empirical findings provided the basis to recommend changes in landscape and soil designs to allow IGR to yield thermal benefits in winter and to improve building energy efficiency. The energy performance of a building in a dense city depends to some extent on its surroundings. The impact of the built form, together with anthropogenic heat gains from traffic and building HVAC exhaust, determines external environmental conditions at the Urban Canopy Layer. Existing building energy models are limited in accounting for micro-scale variations of the urban microclimate, which may significantly modify a building's energy performance in density cities. This paper presents the Urban Building Energy and Climate (UrBEC) model, a coupled urban microclimate model (UMM) and building energy model (HTB2) developed to assess the time varying energy performance of a cluster of buildings and the combined heat gains to the external space from direct and reflected solar radiation, traffic and the exhaust from HVAC systems in a high-density city. The simulation results were evaluated by comparison with field measurement data collected from the Sai Ying Pun neighbourhood in Hong Kong, on a summer and winter day. Predicted and measured air and surface temperature at the four locations were found to be in reasonable agreement. Simulation results indicate an average of 1-3 ºC of temperature rise in street canyons compared with the ambient air in summer. Street level air is predicted to be 0.6 ºC warmer than those at higher levels (20m +). Anthropogenic heat from traffic and building HVAC exhaust are the dominant contributors to temperature rise in street canyons in summer, exceeding the contribution from urban surfaces. The predicted building cooling demand is expected to increase up to 15 % in summer due to the warming effect in street canyons. The UrBEC model runs significantly faster than current CFD-based approaches. Therefore, the model has the potential to support early stage design and planning decisions in a dense city.
