Abstract Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are sized using design conditions, conditions that occur only a small percentage of time each year. As a result, HVAC systems frequently operate at part-load conditions since their capacity is larger than necessary except in the most extreme weather conditions. Most HVAC systems for residential and small commercial buildings in the U.S. use on/off controls, however, most energy modeling software tools do not simulate the on/off nature of this type of HVAC controls. This paper presents the development and validation of an on/off controller for residential applications in EnergyPlus using a custom EMS (energy management system). This controller is validated using minute-level field data collected for a house located in Sacramento, California with simulated occupancy and internal loads. The results obtained from EnergyPlus with and without the use of the developed on/off controller are also compared. The application of the developed on/off controller improves the HVAC energy use results accuracy around 19% in terms of the Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE) at the one-minute level compared to the results without the application of the on/off controller. It also makes the nature of operation and associated energy use signal of the HVAC system more realistic in terms of the on/off nature of the residential direct expansion coils. Furthermore, in this paper, the accuracy improvement of the results dominated by the internal loads is investigated by applying the one-minute schedule compared to the usual hourly schedules for the internal thermal loads. Numerous cost-optimal studies have been undertaken by EU member states to define minimum energy performance requirements for buildings within that member state in accordance with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. As few of these studies have examined the effect of heating and ventilation system parameters on life cycle cost (LCC) and energy use in detail, this paper analysed 84 HVAC solution-sets, including parameters for the heating supply system, heating distribution system and ventilation system, for a case study in Norway. The choice of heating supply system was the dominant parameter, with ground source heat pump solutions offering the lowest purchased energy use and LCC. Electric water heating and district heating systems had low capital costs which make these options more attractive to property developers looking for a good return on investment. Using an exhaust ventilation system with an exhaust air heat pump lowered LCC and capital costs for ground source heat pump and district heating systems but does not meet current Norwegian energy regulations. Despite using more energy, a constant setpoint schedule resulted in a lower LCC than a variable setpoint system due to the variation in hourly energy pricing and the dominant role of monthly pricing based on peak load. The choice of yearly heating strategy and heat emitter had a relatively small impact on energy use, capital cost and LCC. With all the parameters combined, there was variation within each heating system of up to 21 kWh/(m2∙year) in energy use, 78 Euro/m2 in capital cost and 236 Euro/m2 in LCC. Concerning the building environment HVAC facilities, even if a great effort has been made in developing components and systems with high nominal efficiencies, less attention has been paid to the problem of system maintenance. The main objective of the thermoeconomic diagnosis is to detect possible anomalies and their location inside a component of the energy system. The second objective, and indeed the one to be achieved in this paper, is indicated as inverse problem. It is associated with the quantification of the effects of anomalies in terms of thermoeconomic quantities. Its rigorous application in building thermal installations has some difficulties relating to the strong interrelation between the different components and the fact that energy supply facilities are continuously changing with time. The way to deal with dynamic circumstances is thoroughly explored in this article. Likewise, this paper’s main goal is to demonstrate an application of two thermoeconomic diagnosis methodologies in the building sector, one based on the malfunction and dysfunction analysis and the other one based on the characteristic curves of the components. HVAC systems in buildings are composed of many subcomponents which consume energy in huge amounts. In recent years, energy consumption becomes very important aspect due to the lack of energy resources and environmental reasons. In terms of energy consumption, the components of HVAC systems account for large portion of total energy used in buildings. Therefore optimization of energy consumption in HVAC applications is an essential requirement in terms of thermodynamic and economic point of views. Besides, the efforts for decreasing energy consumption turn into economic recovery. It also provides benefits for human health and cleaner environment. In this paper, as originality, thermodynamic and economic analyses of an existing social and cultural building which has a heating and cooling area of 8852 m 2 are presented by comparing of a conventional HVAC and a VRF system. A novel contribution is given to the open literature by comparing two systems with actual data measured from the existing system. The other originality is to apply and test a VRF system to a complex-structured building. This study is a rare one which contains insulation, heating and cooling accounts of a building together. In this paper, VRF system is modelled to the existing building for the comparison of the conventional HVAC system. Both systems have been compared in terms of heating and cooling capacity, initial, operation and maintenance costs. It is found that the VRF system is more economic and efficient such that the VRF system is found to have 44% cost profit when compared with the conventional HVAC system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Understanding occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort is essential to defining the operational settings for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings. Due to the continuous impact of human and environmental factors, occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort level can change over time. Thus, to dynamically control the environment, thermal comfort should be monitored in real time. This paper presents a novel non-intrusive infrared thermography framework to estimate an occupant's thermal comfort level by measuring skin temperature collected from different facial regions using low-cost thermal cameras. Unlike existing methods that rely on placing sensors directly on humans for skin temperature measurement, the proposed framework is able to detect the presence of occupants, extract facial regions, measure skin temperature features, and interpret thermal comfort conditions with minimal interruption of the building occupants. The method is validated by collecting thermal comfort data from a total of twelve subjects under cooling, heating and steady-state experiments. The results demonstrate that ears, nose and cheeks are most indicative of thermal comfort and the proposed framework can be used to assess occupants’ thermal comfort with an average accuracy of 85%. A critical element of assessing a building's suitability for Demand Side Response (DSR) is understanding its turndown potential to ensure that DSR participation will be financially viable. While research has been undertaken on site level DSR estimation methods, there is currently no research that compares the outcomes of these methods. This paper compares four non-domestic energy estimation methods used for understanding the DSR potential of electrical appliances in a building to provide insights about uncertainty levels based on input requirements. Each method is deployed to estimate the DSR potential of HVAC chiller assets at two UK hotels over two years. The results show the methods have a range of error levels from the highest Mean Average Percentage Error (MAPE) of 159% to the lowest MAPE of 39%. The input requirements followed a general trend of more complex informational inputs resulting in lower error values. The outcomes of this research enable users to make informed decisions in selecting DSR estimation methods based on information availability and acceptable estimation error levels. Assessment methods to assess smart ventilation, in most countries focus only on comfort as criteria for the indoor air quality (IAQ) (Guyot et al., 2019). This is an issue as in doing so, pollutants that are known to cause harm to the human health are not taken into consideration while the exposure to VOCs will be elevated if the smart ventilation system lowers the ventilation flowrates to save energy (De Jonge & Laverge, 2021). This research addresses the question of what the impact of changing family sizes would be on the individual exposure to unhealthy pollutants for a smart ventilation system that only uses comfort related parameters to control the ventilation system. By introducing sources of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into a Modelica building energy and IAQ model of a typical Belgian apartment the occupant-dependent (CO 2 and RH) smart ventilation can be assessed for non-occupant dependent pollutants (VOCs). For three given smart ventilation systems, ten different households, with varying sizes and occupants are simulated. The results show that the presence of other family members influences the exposure to VOCs of an individual. One of the three smart ventilation systems is analyzed in detail, for this system, the minimum DALY count is 14.75 yr and maximum is 17.72 yr. They also show that the energy use of the building can be quite different although the only changing parameter in the simulation are the occupants. For the different simulated households, the minimum yearly energy use is 731kwh and maximum yearly energy use is 1319kwh. Similar results are obtained for the other two cases. Overall, the three smart ventilation systems show significant energy savings compared to the continuous nominal reference system but the expected impact on health increases. When designing a simulation-based assessment framework for residential ventilation, the occupant's behavior will always be an unknown factor to consider. The results indicate that in developing a simulations-based assessment framework, it is recommended to not assume just one household as in doing so, the system performance is not properly checked with regards to health and energy use during the lifetime of the system and the related expected variation in household types and sizes. The results in this paper confirm that a stochastic approach for assessing residential smart ventilation systems based on health-related pollutants (VOCs) should be investigated further. This paper investigates experimentally the cooling performance of a concept, where the radiant ceiling is suspended from the hollow-core concrete slab and by ventilation supply in the plenum and the perforations of the ceiling tiles, ventilation air is distributed without ducts and air terminals to the occupied zone. Literature has proven that this concept allows for more streamlined installation procedures and excellent performance in terms of thermal comfort and draught. The paper reports experimental results from a climate chamber, where the concept was tested under both steady-state and quasi-steady conditions. The steady-state conditions were chosen to map the cooling performance with different air change rates, and different ventilation and water supply temperatures. The results showed that for air change rates of 3 h−1 in the occupied zone and water supply temperature of 17 °C, the cooling output from the ceiling increased by 10 %. The concept was also tested under quasi-steady conditions in a 48 h cycle to quantify the thermal buffering effect of the exposed upper concrete slab when subjected to ventilation supply air. The effect amounted to 11–12 % increased cooling capacity at the end of the working day when the driving temperatures between air, water and thermal zones were at their maximum. The very low heating load of deep renovated buildings following standards such as EnerPHit, and the limited space in renovation create the need for compact heating systems. An innovative heating and ventilation system - consisting of an exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a heat recovery ventilation unit, both integrated into a prefabricated timber frame façade - was developed and installed in a flat during the renovation of a multi-family house in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The system and the flat were monitored for the complete heating season 2016/2017. This paper presents: (a) an analysis of the monitoring data, (b) the development and validation of the models of the system and the flat, and (c) the results of the dynamic simulations that were performed for further system optimisation. Inside the flat, good thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions were achieved. The monitored SPF of the system was 2.8. Simulation results showed that with the optimised system and control, there can be an electricity savings of 25%. The developed system has the potential to be cost-effective due to prefabrication and low heating capacity. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. Abstract: Design engineers commonly oversize HVAC systems with the justification of needing a reasonable safety factor to manage periods more extreme than the specific design conditions. Unfortunately, the safety factor easily becomes excessive. The design engineers minimize their professional risk, and by doing so they are actually asking the building owner to pay an immediate penalty due to increased first cost of equipment and an ongoing penalty due to maintenance and energy use implications. The penalties associated with excessive safety factors are often not communicated to the client. This paper presents the results of a study of “rightsizing” rooftop HVAC systems. The study included intensive interviews with HVAC designers investigating the design process and extensive field measurement of rooftop units (RTUs) during peak cooling conditions. This paper focuses on defining the signature of oversizing, i.e. how to use the physical measurements to quantify the degree of oversizing of an RTU and how to estimate the penalty of oversizing in terms of energy consumption and peak electricity demand. Utility companies incentive programs have not yet identified mechanisms for incentivizing rightsizing of HVAC system. Abstract: Building energy regulations, also referred to as building energy codes, emerged in the 1970s as an essential tool for improving energy efficiency and minimising energy consumption in buildings. Basically they aim at setting minimum energy efficiency requirements to achieve energy efficient design in new buildings. This paper analyses the development of building energy codes concerning Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) energy efficiency, along with their scope and compliance paths. The paper focuses on the synthesis of energy efficiency requirements on HVAC systems of non-residential buildings in different regulations. Critical issues for the development of prescriptive and performance regulatory paths for this type of systems in non-residential buildings are discussed in order to improve the understanding of HVAC energy efficiency topics and to provide policy makers with a menu of options to strengthen the HVAC section of building energy codes. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. Combined air heating and ventilation systems are often used in low energy buildings. However, operating these systems in the heating mode increases vertical air temperature gradient in rooms and can have negative effect on indoor air quality. The effectiveness of ventilation and personal exposure of the occupants to airborne pollutants generated at the floor level in rooms with the combined air heating and mixing ventilation was analyzed in this paper. The dispersion of pollutants was evaluated under three air distribution methods (in-ceiling four-way and one-way air supply, and high level wall grille air supply) and under three air change rates (1, 2, and 3 ach). Each of these cases were tested at the supply air temperature of +20 °C and +25 °C by performing CFD simulations and experiments in the full-scale test chamber. The results of the experiments showed higher inhaled concentration of the contaminants under the heating mode. The inhaled-to-ambient pollutant concentration ratio varied in the range of 1.05–1.41 under the ventilation mode and it rose up to 1.14–1.78 under combined air heating and ventilation mode. CFD predictions confirmed that pollutants generated at the floor level are entrained into convective boundary layer of the occupant in cases when vertical air temperature gradient was present. The personal exposure to pollutants released at the floor level can increase significantly when a HVAC system runs in the combined air heating and ventilation mode; this effect will not necessarily dissolve with the increase of the air change rate. In buildings, HVAC systems consume a high amount of energy to provide thermal comfort for occupants. A methodology is presented in this paper to control thermostat operation of the buildings considering the effects of indoor and outdoor boundary conditions and phase change material (PCM) characteristics. EnergyPlus v8.1 building energy simulation software was used to analyze the energy performance of the PCM incorporated building models and to implement Fanger model to control HVAC thermostat operation according to BS EN 15251:2007 thermal comfort categories. Three types of building HVAC schedule, PCM with different melting points and layer thicknesses were studied for Madrid climate zone. Moreover, the impact of occupants clothing on the energy consumption was investigated. Furthermore, payback analysis was conducted to find out the economic benefits of PCM integration into the building envelopes. Application of PCM improved the cooling and heating energy performances except for the office model in winter (heating period). Additionally, higher energy savings and lower payback periods were observed when PCM with higher melting point was applied to the buildings. In order to reduce energy consumption in buildings, a solution using phase change materials (PCMs) as thermal energy storage (TES) is presented. During summer nights, cold is stored and delivered during the day to reduce cooling load, whereas in winter, heat from solar air collector is stored for heating during morning and evening hours. Proposed is a stand-alone unit suitable for offices, which consists of plates filled with paraffin RT22HC. The objective of the paper is to examine the functioning of the suggested TES system on an annual basis and to explore the feasibility of using it for both, cooling and heating. First numerical model is set up, which assumes 2D geometry and evaluates thermal response, calculations are carried out in Fluent. Phase Change Materials (PCM) technology can be used for thermal storage and peak load shaving. This paper presents the optimization study of a PCM-Air heat exchanger as well as the development of load shifting solutions which take into account the thermal comfort of the occupants and the indoor air quality. The exchanger contains macroencapsumated PCM (paraffin) and is conceived in a way that facilitates its integration in a ventilation system. It is aimed to shift space heating electrical consumption from peak to off-peak period. The study is performed using an experimentally validated numerical model based on the heat balance approach and the apparent heat capacity method. Several parameters were investigated during the optimization processes, including heat exchanger dimensions, PCM quantity and properties, seeking the configuration with the optimal compromise between stored heat and the time needed for the charging/discharging process. The numerical model was coupled to a building simulation model with several control strategies investigating different scenarios over a one- month winter period. The scenarios vary with increasing complexity, first considering load shifting and thermal comfort, then adding the final price of electricity consumption and finally taking into account the indoor air quality. Artificial intelligence techniques have been successfully applied to control dynamic systems looking for an optimal control. Among those techniques, reinforcement learning has been shown as particularly effective at reducing the dimensionality of some real problems and solving control problems by learning from experience. The use of thermal energy storage active systems in the building sector is identified as suitable option to reduce their energy demand for heating and cooling. However, these systems might be expensive and require appropriate control strategies in order to improve the performance of the building. In this paper a ventilated facade with PCM is controlled using a reinforcement learning algorithm. The ventilated facade uses mechanical ventilation during nighttime to solidify the PCM and releases this cold stored to the inner environment during the peak demand period. It is crucial to decide correctly the schedule of charge and discharge process of the PCM according to the weather and indoor conditions. An experimentally validated numerical model is used to test the performance of the control algorithm under different weather conditions. The damper used for the control of airflow in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems can constructively be adapted to measure the air velocity with its moment characteristic. It is a device that indirectly determines the air velocity by measuring the position of the blades and the air stream moment acting on it. The subject of this paper is energy consumption of the air torque position damper depending on its structure. The aim is to compare the energy consumption of four possible types of dampers with non-cascading blades: with one blade, with two cross-guided blades, with two parallels-guided blades and with two blades, one of which is a measuring blade and the other remains fixed in horizontal position. The case when there is a straight section of a duct both in front of and behind the damper was considered. Adequacy of the existing mathematical model and energy consumption for all four types of dampers was determined experimentally. The paper presents the results of the analysis of the impact of various ventilation systems on the energy consumption performed for one Polish museum building that was built in 1929–1930. Simulations were carried out with the use of two computer codes: CONTAM and ESP-r. Multi-zone models including the exhibition rooms and the staircase were prepared. The simulations were made of synthetic weather data for one of the Polish towns for two months of the heating season. Twenty-four hour variability of internal heat gains was taken into account. The results show clearly that the natural ventilation system (which is currently used in the building) enables the air exchange with fresh air on the first floor only. The air infiltration on the upper levels is close to zero. Rebuilding the ventilation system generates changes in the energy demand of the building. It is presented how the heat demand increases with the increase of the ventilation air flow and what is the impact of the air infiltration on the heat demand for different variants of ventilation. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. The results confirm our analysis of global datasets and show that humidex is a good predictor of indoor thermal comfort at high humidity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Integrating passive systems such as cross and stack ventilation, a solar chimney, a wind tower or an earth-air tunnel into a building envelope has the potential to significantly reduce the ventilation and air-conditioning demand on buildings. However the application of combination of these features in low rise contemporary buildings is limited. Among the major reasons, is the lack of simple building modelling techniques preventing effective integrated passive systems. Existing coupled multi-zone airflow and thermal modelling software such as COMIS-TRNSYS, CONTAM-TRNSYS or TRNFLOW do not include the passive airflow components which require simultaneous prediction of temperature and airflow rate in the components such as solar chimneys and wind-induced earth-air tunnels. This paper develops an integrated model incorporating these passive airflow components into a coupled multi-zone ventilation and building thermal model. The model is validated against COMIS-TRNSYS software for a lightweight building with large openings. The prediction of each passive airflow component is validated with available published analytical and experimental findings. The solar chimney model is able to predict reverse flow and accurately predicts the air temperature in the chimney. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: New Zealand has a temperate maritime climate. Despite mild winters compared to nations with continental climates, New Zealand houses have been reported to often be at temperatures below internationally recommended levels. Sources of additional heating are therefore of interest to many New Zealand home occupants. Roof space solar gains have been identified as one possible source of heating. This paper investigates the energy gains available in New Zealand homes from ventilation systems drawing air from the roof cavity. Three New Zealand houses were monitored and a computer-based thermal building simulation developed to quantify the heating and cooling energy that might be transferred by home ventilation systems. The computer model simulating the temperature in the roof space and occupied spaces was constructed using MATLAB, and used publicly available weather station data as the inputs. A good match between measured and modelled results was obtained. Small heating and cooling benefits are possible at certain times from pumping roof space air into the living areas of some New Zealand houses. The magnitude of these benefits, however, is not significant compared with the space heating required to maintain reasonable indoor temperatures over the New Zealand winter. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: According to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) all new European buildings (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.) must since 2006 have an energy declaration based on the calculated energy performance of the building, including heating, ventilating, cooling and lighting systems. This energy declaration must refer to the primary energy or CO2 emissions. The European Organization for Standardization (CEN) has prepared a series of standards for energy performance calculations for buildings and systems. This paper presents related standards for heating systems. The relevant CEN-standards are presented and a sample calculation of energy performance is made for a small single family house, an office building and an industrial building in three different geographical locations: Stockholm, Brussels, and Venice. The additional heat losses from heating systems can be 10–20% of the building energy demand. The additional loss depends on the type of heat emitter, type of control, pump and boiler. Abstract: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. Based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model''s parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Abstract: In this paper, we propose a vision-based system for human detection and activity analysis in indoor environment. The developed presence sensor is based on video analysis, using a static camera. Composed of three main steps, the first one consists in change detection using a background model updated at different levels to manage the most common variations of the environment. Second, a moving objects tracking, based on interest points, is performed. Third, in order to know the nature of the various objects that could be present in the scene, multiple cascades of boosted classifiers are used. The validation protocol, defined by the industrial partners involved in the CAPTHOM project focusing among other things on “Energy Management in Building”, is then detailed. Three applications integrated into the CAPTHOM project illustrate how the developed system can help in collecting useful information for the building management system. Occupancy detection and people counting as well as activity characterization and 3D location extend to a wide variety of buildings technology research areas such as human-centered environmental control including heating adjustment and demand-controlled ventilation, but also security and energy efficient buildings. Abstract: In this paper numerical transient simulations were used to investigate the air flow patterns, distribution and velocity, and the particulate dispersion inside an existing typical hospitalization room equipped with an advanced Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), with Variable Air Volume (VAV) primary air system designed for immune-suppressed patients never modelled before. The three-dimensional models of the room consider different, most typical, positions of the patients. Results indicate the best conditions for the high induction air inlet diffuser and the scheme of pressures imposed in the room to provide the effective means of controlling flows containing virus droplets. We believe that our work exemplifies the usefulness of numerical investigations of HVAC performances in real situations and provides important recommendations towards disease control and careful design and optimization of ventilation in hospital settings. Abstract: This paper is concerned with the development of a mathematical model, capable of describing the quasi-steady state performance of an integrated ground source heat pump, which is used for heating and cooling of an institutional building located in a Mediterranean climate. The model is structured on functional basis according to the heat pump vapour compression or primary circuit, a secondary ground loop circuit and a secondary building loop circuit. Heat pump heating and cooling capacities, as well as COP, are considered to be dependent variables and are estimated in the model using performance fitted maps. Independent variables include: compressor speed, circulation pump speeds, ground loop return temperature and building circuit return temperature. The model is validated using data from a full-scale ground source heat pump installation. The validated model is used to examine system capacity and performance sensitivity to different control optimisation strategies, including set-point control of room air temperature, room air bandwidth temperature, building loop return water temperature and building loop return bandwidth temperature. Abstract: In heating mode, fresh air is still essential for a chilled panel system in order to ensure the indoor air quality. In this paper, a chilled ceiling panel system was designed and built in a typical office room. The thermal environment and thermal comfort in the room were fully measured and evaluated by using the Fanger''s PMV–PPD model and the standard of ISO 7730 respectively, when room was heated in two modes, one of which is the chilled panel heating mode and the other of which is the combined heating mode of chilled panel and supply air. The research results indicate that in the combined mode, ceiling ventilation improves the general thermal comfort and reduces the risk of local discomfort. Under the condition of same general thermal comfort, the heating supply upper limit of chilled panel can be increased by 12.3% because of air mixing effect caused by introduction of air ventilation. Abstract: The significant and continuous increment in the global electricity consumption is asking for energy saving strategies. Efficient control for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) is the most cost-effective way to minimize the use of energy in buildings. In this framework, an energy management and control system (EMCS) has been developed to schedule electricity end-uses in the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. This paper presents an evaluation performed by using the EMCS of different control strategies for HVAC split systems. It analyzed the effect of different schedules for a common air-conditioning device and demand response strategies are tested in several situations. The economic saving is calculated taking into account the electricity contract clauses. Finally, a test is made for the control of a group of similar devices in order to reduce the maximum peak power in consumption and to obtain a flexible load shape with the HVAC loads. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: The Kyoto protocol binded the developed countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at least by 5% by 2008–2012 in order to tackle global warming and climate change. Some of the measures of the governments to achieve this goal are to promote new buildings construction and to retrofit existing buildings while satisfying low energy criteria. This means improving energy efficiency of buildings and energy systems, developing sustainable building concepts and promoting renewable energy sources. The design of a low energy building requires parametric studies via simulation tools in order to optimize the design of the building envelope and HVAC systems. These studies are often complex and time consuming due to a large number of parameters to consider. Hence, this paper aims to set up a methodology that simplifies parametrical studies during the design process of a low energy building. The methodology is based on the Design of Experiments (DOE) method which is a statistical method widely used in industry to perform parametric studies that reduces the required number of experiments. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. Abstract: This paper analyses the ventilation airflow pattern in a two-bedded hospital room. The whole space of the room is divided in modules by means of curtains and internal partition walls. This configuration has many advantages from the point of view of comfort and medical assistance, but it implies an important restriction as far as ventilation is concerned. The ventilation system consists of an induction unit placed inside the hall ceiling blowing into the room and an exhaust fan in the bathroom. Numerical model solves mass, momentum and mean age of air equations assuming isothermal and stationary flow. Ventilation is evaluated analysing the age of air and the velocity fields inside the room. The results with the initial architectural design of the room show a very deficient ventilation at the patients site. Alternative configurations have been studied, allowing for correct ventilation without renouncing to the assistance advantages. Finally, the optimum configuration of the room is provided, regarding both the comfort of the patients and the cost of execution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the last decade a lot of research effort has been spent on identifying the effect of the urban climate on the energy performance of buildings and HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) systems. In this paper a methodology is proposed to assess that effect by the exclusive use of modeled data. Particularly, by using a downscaling modeling procedure a process for the generation of weather files for energy calculations is achieved. From a non-hydrostatic weather model the urban climate of the city of Lisbon is simulated and via a weather generator climatic data files for the buildings’ simulation software are derived. Abstract: As a high-efficiency air-conditioning scheme, the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air-conditioning system is finding its way in office buildings. However, there is no well-known energy simulation software available so far which can be used for the energy analysis of VRF. Based on the generic dynamic building energy simulation environment, EnergyPlus, a new VRF module is developed and the energy usage of the VRF system is investigated. This paper compares the energy consumption of the VRF system with that of two conventional air-conditioning systems, namely, variable air volume (VAV) system as well as fan-coil plus fresh air (FPFA) system. A generic office building is used to accommodate the different types of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The work focuses on the energy consumption of the VRF system in the office buildings and helps the designer''s evaluation and decision-making on the HVAC systems in the early stages of building design. Simulation results show that the energy-saving potentials of the VRF system are expected to achieve 22.2% and 11.7%, compared with the VAV system and the FPFA system, respectively. Abstract: Among the different existing methods to characterise the aerodynamic sealing effect provided by an air curtain device placed over the opening between two contiguous compartments, infrared thermography has revealed to be a very useful tool. Besides allowing the capture, in an expedite way, of instantaneous images of the temperature field in the neighbourhood of the door, the technique hereon described has other advantages, in terms of quick and easy setup, low intrusive character and liability of obtained results. To apply this method, a large sheet of paper was stretched in the direction perpendicular to the opening where the air curtain device has placed to allow the registration of pictures or video sequences with an infrared camera setup in its maximum sensitivity. Good concordance between the thermographs obtained with this technique and the temperature fields measured for the same plane with a rack of 16 low velocity omni-directional thermal anemometer probes allowed its validation. Various elucidative examples of the use of this technique as a complementary tool for analysis and visualization of the complex physical phenomena occurring for the studied flow are presented in this article. Abstract: Ground heat exchanger (GHE) coupled heat pumps constitute an alternative system for the air conditioning of buildings, with the vertical U-tube type being the most popular. The installation cost and the overall performance of the system strongly depends on the designing and dimensioning, which however present significant difficulties. The critical parameter in designing vertical systems is the thermal power per meter of borehole that the GHE can handle. Abstract: Solar air collectors are important components for solar energy utilization in green houses. In this paper, experimental studies were carried out regarding to a solar air collector (SAC), for which the length of air channel is 1500mm, the width is 500mm, and a variable air channel gap ranges from 100 to 500mm. In the experiment, the uniform heat flux along the air channel is effected by three electric heating plates, which play a role as solar radiation. It is found that the temperature distribution of air and the induced natural air-flow rate are highly dependent on heat input, inclination angle, channel gap, etc. Experimental results indicate that the optimum inclination angle for the SAC is 45°, under which a maximum natural ventilation rate can be created. Also found is that there exists an appropriate channel length, about 1m in this study, beyond which the obtained heat and the natural ventilation rate cannot be increased drastically. Higher the volume of air-flow rate through the SAC, lower the temperature difference between inlet and outlet, consequently, it should be balanced between the air temperature rise and a suitable mechanical air-flow rate in order to obtain maximum heat.
