Highlights • To design building's controls and setup strategies for personal behaviours, factors related to behaviours are studied. • Adaptive behaviours can create balance between indoor quality, comfort and energy use (ICE factors). • A design framework is proposed to facilitate environmental and personal adaptive behaviours. Abstract Adaptive behaviour has a significant impact on the quality of indoor environment, comfort, and energy consumption. Therefore, facilitating positive occupant behaviours will improve these three factors. The aim of this paper is to develop a design framework that can be used as part of the design process to facilitate adaptive behaviours. This paper reviews studies that focus on reasons behind adaptive behaviours, and implication of these adaptive behaviours on the built environment. This paper highlights that 'Context', 'Occupant', and 'Building' (COB) have the most influence on adaptive behaviours. However, in most cases their influence is not considered holistically. This study also illustrates that adaptive behaviour has implications for the quality of Indoor environment, level of Comfort, and Energy consumption (ICE). This paper introduces a framework consisting of three stages: (1) Evaluate the relation between COB and ICE factors with adaptive behaviours holistically; (2) Design building's controls for 'environmental behaviours', set-up strategies for 'personal behaviours', and find a balance between these two; 3) Monitor the performance of adaptive behaviours through Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE). This paper aims to review the boundary conditions (B/C) in specific categories (energy, building use, and lighting) within non-residential buildings to pave the way to a better understanding of users' requirements and needs of the built environment. For this paper, B/C are understood as unique preconditions, specific characteristics for use, determining specific features of buildings, enabling an accurate understanding of non-residential spaces concerning energy use, user behaviour, and lighting. This paper describes the results of an overall quantitative (1st method) review and a systematic review (2nd method) of boundary conditions and their factors within different types of non-residential buildings from the users' perception. Followed by a qualitative experts' literature review (3rd method) on B/C within offices, schools, and hospitals chosen by a team of international experts working together on Subtask A: User perspective and requirements, Task 61 IEA (International Energy Agency): Solutions for daylighting and electric lighting. The first review method led to the selection of 21 papers. The second method resulted in the selection of 7 papers out of 93,143 found in Scopus; during the 3rd review, experts collectively chose 74 additional papers focussing on the users' factors contributing to specific B/C. The scope of this paper is limited only to offices, schools, and hospitals. Based on the findings, the authors recognise a broad definition of boundary conditions from specific values, and conditions to interconnected factors, user profiles, functions of the building types, and operating hours. This paper is an overview of B/C factors found in the literature that can help explain the occupants' behaviour and the use of spaces. B/C are often type of building/user/location/situation/simulation input-values and method-specific. Therefore, they cannot be widely applicable but offer patterns and help to understand the correlations between various factors shaping the built environment. A better comprehension of the reasons for identifying B/C and their factors can help in developing a deeper knowledge of how we use buildings to find optimal ways to design them. This paper investigates factors associated with variation in daily total (electricity and gas) energy consumption in domestic buildings using linked pre-COVID-19 smart meter, weather, building thermal characteristics, and socio-technical survey data covering appliance ownership, demographics, behaviours, and attitudes for two nested sub-samples of 1418 and 682 British households selected from the Smart Energy Research Laboratory (SERL) Observatory panel. Linear mixed effects modelling resulted in adjusted R2 between 63% and 80% depending on sample size and combinations of contextual data used. Increased daily energy consumption was significantly associated (p -value < 0.05, VIF < 5) with: households living in buildings with more rooms and bedrooms, that are older, more detached, have air-conditioning, and experience colder (more heating degree days) or less sunny weather; households with more adult occupants, more children, older adult occupants, higher heating temperature setpoints, and that do not try to save energy. The results demonstrate the value of smart meter data linked with contextual data for improving understanding of energy demand in British housing. Accredited UK researchers are invited to apply to access the data, which has recently been updated to include over 13,000 households from across Great Britain. Abstract: The success of modeling the sustainable performance of the residential building envelope will be to a great extent associated to the sustainable energy performance indicators used. The sustainable energy performance indicators that these building assessment models are developed around should be chosen by taking into account the targeted objectives. However, it is very common to find building performance assessment models that do not take into account these considerations and therefore have a limited capability and scope. This leads to inadequate aggregate indicators for the actual assessment of the sustainable performance of the building envelope for a sustainable energy efficient building. The focus of this paper is to investigate the principal sustainable energy performance indicators for modeling the sustainable performance of the residential building envelope and develop an approach for determining the most appropriate sustainable energy performance indicators. In doing that, this paper provides an overview of previous research on sustainable energy performance indicators and discusses conceptual framework for developing sustainable energy performance indicators. In order to identify these indicators that influence the capability of building performance assessment models, a comprehensive survey of construction industry professionals was conducted using questionnaire survey technique while the data was analyzed using correlation analysis techniques. The construction sector has grown to have the second-highest energy consumption in China, smaller only than the industrial sector. The objective of this paper is to explore whether compactness is sustainable city form from aspects of urban household energy use carbon emission (UHEUCE). To eliminate social influence as much as possible, we designated a standard family whose social conditions represent the entire city average. Normalized compactness index, connectivity of green space (GS) and water bodies (WB), and accessibility to GS and WB by households were selected as quantitative indicators related to urban sprawl. These indicators were quantified using remote sensing and geophysical information system methods. Urban sprawl aspects of compactness were positively correlated with UHEUCE. The other urban sprawl form indicated by GS and WB connectivity had the same positive correlations with UHEUCE. The greater the GS and WB accessibility, the less UHEUCE. This indicates that designing cities to be compact with less accessibility to GS and WB may increase household energy consumption. Substantial use of GS and WB, even if they are fragmented, will reduce carbon emission from residential energy use. The principal aim of our study is to investigate the contribution and/or the influence of Foreign Trade (FT), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and Financial Development (FD) on the Energy Consumption (EC)-Environmental Pollution (EP)-Economic Growth (EG) link for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) over the period 1971–2019. To realize the study aim, we develop an augmented growth model to examine the long-run relationship between the mentioned variables by applying the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) procedure and the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to capture direction causality. The empirical results suggest that the variables concerned are cointegrated. Further, the coefficients estimated are mixed across countries. In the long-run, EC, FT (except Kuwait), and FDI (except Oman and KSA) are related to a rise in EG for all countries. Besides, the findings support that EC generates EG in the short-run for all GCC countries, implying economic expansion. Moreover, the major conclusion of this research paper has an impressive value for the policymakers to advance comprehensive trade, investment, financial, and energy policies that enable to achieve sustainable development. Abstract: In this paper, the energy and exergy utilizations in Jordan are analyzed by considering the energy and exergy flows for the year 2010 in the transportation, residential, and industrial sectors which represent more than 82% of total energy demand in Jordan. Detailed end-use models for the different sectors are established. For the transportation sector, the end-use model is constructed using scattered data from different governmental agencies. Due to lack of information for residential and industrial sectors, surveys covering 200 households and 180 industrial facilities were conducted and energy consumption data was gathered to establish detailed end-use models for the Jordanian residential and industrial sectors. Exergy analysis of Jordan indicates a less efficient picture than that obtained by the energy analysis. Energy and exergy efficiencies of Jordan were found to be equal to 48.2 and 23.2% respectively. It was found that the industrial sector is the most efficient energy and exergy sector. The study emphasizes the usefulness of the current methodology for analyzing sectoral energy and exergy utilization. This study will also provide an insight to energy analysts and policy makers in Jordan when considering the process of implementing energy policy measures such as energy efficiency standards in Jordan. Abstract: This paper discusses the issue of selecting the design solution that best accords with an articulated preference of multiple criteria with an acceptable performance band. The application of a newly developed multi-criteria decision-making tool called RR-PARETO2 is presented. An example of HVAC design is used to illustrate how solutions could be selected within a multi-criteria optimization framework. In this example, five criteria have been selected, namely, power consumption, thermal comfort, risk of airborne infection of influenza and tuberculosis and effective differential temperature (Δt eq) of body parts. The goal is to select the optimal air exchange rate that makes reasonable trade-offs among all the objectives. Two scenarios have been studied. In the first scenario, there is an influenza outbreak and the important objective is to prevent the spread of infection. In the second scenario, energy prices are high and the primary objective is to reduce energy. In both scenarios, RR-PARETO2 algorithm selects solutions that make reasonable trade-offs among conflicting objectives. The example illustrates how objectives such as reduction of airborne disease transmission and maximizing thermal comfort can be incorporated in the design of a practical, full-scale HVAC system. Abstract: In this paper, a CCHP cycle that operates on a micro-steam turbine is introduced to provide the energy requirements of a residential building. The heating and cooling systems are a steam and air heat exchanger (SAHE), and a steam ejector condenser (SEC), respectively. A parametric study is presented to observe the effect of some parameters such as the turbine inlet pressure and temperature on the evaluation criteria of the cycle and its components. The cycle is also optimized by the genetic algorithm to find the maximum overall efficiency. The exergy analysis reveals that the biggest exergy destruction takes place in the steam generator for both summer and winter seasons. The fuel energy saving ratio is achieved more than 69% in the summer and up to 25% for the winter time. The daily load analyses are shown that the CCHP can save energy when it compared to a system which produce cooling, heating and power separately, except for the time when the required heating load is lower than 150kW. Furthermore the overall efficiency of the CCHP at the maximum working load in the summer and the winter reaches to 25% and 61%, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study to meet the building heating/cooling and power demand through a sustainable operation. We integrated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and triple effect absorption refrigeration system (TEARS) for space cooling/heating and water heating applications in buildings. The analysis is carried out to observe the effects of different operating conditions on the efficiency of the fuel cell, output of the fuel cell and TEARS, and the utilization factor of the system. It is found that the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water increases from 36% to 48.8%, 49% to 86%, and 14K to 23K, respectively when the temperature of the cell is increased for different cooling loads and membrane thicknesses. In addition, the increase in membrane thickness affected the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water in a negative way and they were found to be decreasing from 47.3% to 42%, 85% to 49%, and 23K to 12K, respectively for different cooling loads. The water supplied to the house is obtained from a geothermal water source which makes the system more sustainable. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Window design, especially glazing choices, is a critical factor for determining the effectiveness of passive solar design. Windows are like a knife has two side; one is useful and the other is harmful. In this paper the effects of windows’U-value, window orientation and windows size on annual heating and cooling energy demand is studied considering the both energy and investment costs. The study has been performed for three different climate zones; Amman, Aqaba and Berlin. Four types of windows have been studied; single glazed, double glazed L, double glazed H and triple glazed. The results show that heating load is highly sensitive to windows size and type as compared with cooling load. Also, it is shown that with a well-optimized glazed window energy saving can be reached up to 21%, 20% and 24% for Amman, Aqaba and Berlin, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: Private and public sectors own and operate an array of office buildings that consume energy and contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). Energy demands can be reduced by applying energy retrofit measures (ERMs) to existing buildings. The choice of ERMs involves evaluation of applicability, energy end uses and cost of application versus energy savings. This paper describes a methodology developed to screen office buildings for their current level of energy consumption and potential for retrofit application. Selection of an optimal set of ERMs is influenced by climate, occupancy, heating and cooling systems, envelope properties and building geometry. When assessing the implications of applying ERMs to a large building stock it is vital to screen the complete building set for optimal retrofit opportunities. This can be accomplished by characterizing office building stock into a manageable set of archetypes and simulating building operation using energy simulation software. Using regression analyses, a model was developed for estimating the energy consumption. Present value analysis was used to optimize the evaluation of the various ERMs. The methodology developed can be used to simplify the ranking of buildings for retrofit; to select and combine ERMs, and to plan energy and GHG reduction activities. Abstract: This paper reviews the annual energy and water performance of an aspiring low energy/carbon affordable housing development in southern UK, comprising 25 houses heated by a biomass fueled district heating network. Electrical, heat and water consumption data was collected for all dwellings and more detailed data logging was conducted on a sample of four. The data was analysed to benchmark the overall site performance and compare the individual dwellings. The individual dwellings performed efficiently in terms of electricity, heat and water consumption. Significant variation was identified between maximum and minimum consumers, even when typical performance correlates (i.e. number of occupants, floor area) were accounted for. Water consumption varies by a factor of > 7 and heat and electrical consumption by > 3 which, given the homogeneous design and specification of the buildings, suggested that occupant behaviour was important. Site-wide energy consumption and losses (over and above individual dwelling use) reduced energy and carbon emissions performance by 85% and 70% respectively. Although energy consumption in UK homes can be substantially reduced, the challenge for zero-carbon design is to address issues of total system performance, occupant behaviour and whole-building energy performance. Abstract: Energy usage and energy efficiency are of increasing concern in Mexico, electricity generation principally depends upon fossil fuels. On one hand, the stocks of these fuels have been confirmed to be critically limited. On the other hand, in process of electricity generation by means of these fuels, a number of poisonous by-products adversely affect the conservation of natural eco-system. This paper focuses on estimation of energy consumption, energy savings, reduction of emissions of CO2 for use of urban and rural household appliances in Mexico between 1996 and 2021. The analysis concentrates on six major energy end uses in the residential sector: refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, TV set, iron and heater. It is estimated that by 2021 there will be a cumulative saving of 22,605GWh, as a result of the implementation of government programs on energy efficiency that represents a cumulative reduction of CO2 emissions of 15,087TgCO2. It means that Mexico can reduce in 5650MW the generation capacity of national electricity system, which is to avoid burning 40.35MM barrels of oil. Abstract: The general methodology for estimating energy consumption in buildings, in accordance with the EN ISO 13790, needs the use of constants that are valid for each set of climatic conditions. Furthermore, there are variables other than building structure and weather conditions that have an influence. In this sense, recent research works showed the real effect of permeable coverings on indoor environmental conditions, by controlling indoor moisture. The effect of the associated heat and mass transfer on heating or cooling energy consumption is evident during the initial hours of building occupation. In the present paper, the general methodology of building heat demand calculation is modified to consider different levels of permeability of internal coverings, in order to obtain a more accurate model. Results showed that permeable coverings are related with a higher building utilisation factor, and that the value of this factor is higher in summer than in winter season. Consequently, despite the fact that the sensibility of energy consumption to internal coverings may be lower than to building envelope, new constants are proposed to express a relationship between building permeability and energy consumption, in order to apply the certification equation. Abstract: Simav is one of the most important 15 geothermal areas in Turkey. It has several geothermal resources with the mass flow rate ranging from 35 to 72kg/s and temperature from 88 to 148°C. Hence, these geothermal resources are available to use for several purposes, such as electricity generation, district heating, greenhouse heating, and balneological purposes. In Simav, the 5000 residences are heated by a district heating system in which these geothermal resources are used. Beside this, a greenhouse area of 225,000m2 is also heated by geothermal. In this study, the working conditions of the Simav geothermal district heating system have been optimized. In this paper, the main characteristics of the system have been presented and the impact of the parameters of heating circuit on the system are investigated by the means of energy, exergy, and life cycle cost (LCC) concepts. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. In addition, over-cooling outdoor air (OA) flow couples the OA flow with the indoor heat removable needs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents an application of an exergoeconomic model, through exergy and cost accounting analyses, to the Gonen geothermal district heating system (GDHS) in Balikesir, Turkey for the entire system and its components. This exergoeconomic model is used to reveal the cost formation process and the productive interaction between components. The exergy destructions in the overall Gonen GDHS are quantified and illustrated for a reference temperature of 4°C. The results indicate that the exergy destructions in the system occur primarily as a result of losses in the cooled geothermal water injected back into the reservoir, pumps, heat exchangers, and pipelines. Total exergy destruction and reinjection exergy of the cooled geothermal water result in 1010kW (accounting for 32.49%), 320.3kW (accounting for 10%) of the total exergy input to the Gonen GDHS, respectively. Both energy and exergy efficiencies of the overall Gonen GDHS are also investigated to analyze the system performance, as these efficiencies are determined to be 42% and 50%, respectively. It is found that an increase of the load condition leads to a decrease in the overall thermal costs, which will result in more cost-effective energy systems for buildings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A two-storey rammed earth building was built on the Thurgoona Campus of Charles Sturt University in Albury-Wodonga, Australia, in 1999. The building is novel both in the use of materials and equipment for heating and cooling. The climate at Wodonga can be characterised as hot and dry, so the challenge of providing comfortable working conditions with minimal energy consumption is considerable. This paper describes an evaluation of the building in terms of measured thermal comfort and energy use. Measurements, confirmed by a staff questionnaire, found the building was too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Comparison with another office building in the same location found that the rammed earth building used more energy for heating. The thermal performance of three offices in the rammed earth building was investigated further using simulation to predict office temperatures. Comparisons were made with measurements made over typical weeks in summer and winter. The validated model has been used to investigate key building parameters and strategies to improve the thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption in the building. Almost in all the major cities in Asian countries, residential buildings are characterized with high-rise and high density. Under this circumstance, achieving comfortable and healthy indoor environment with minimized energy consumption becomes a very challenging engineering and societal issue. While the wide use of air-conditioning helped to improve thermal comfort, health problems associated with poor indoor air qualities have appeared more frequently. The increased energy consumption is also a great concern in view of its impact on the energy economics of the region. Drawn from some of the onsite measurements and survey, and also the author’s personal observation, some of the key issues are discussed in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Data-centric methods include computational modelling, monitoring and statistics. • Dwelling retrofit research in North Western Europe has been dominated by energy efficiency. • More parameters in the home environment can be monitored, informing retrofit impacts. • Monitored data with agent-based modelling or property passports can inform retrofit practice. • Data on retrofit impact could increase the low retrofit rates (typically 0.4–1.2% per year). Data-centric innovation can inform the development of effective retrofit strategies through novel methods of collecting, analysing and sharing data. This bibliometric review uses a text-mining tool to identify research trends in dwelling retrofit research across North Western Europe. The review identifies a major focus on energy efficiency, with sub-themes on: 1) energy performance, 2) heat, power and control technologies, 3) indoor environment quality and 4) retrofit practice. In dwelling retrofit, there is now an established research tradition of using data-centric methods in monitoring and modelling energy performance to inform and learn from energy efficiency interventions. Building on the state-of-the-art, our analyses suggest opportunities for data-centric methods to consider the indoor environment quality and material impacts resulting from energy performance improvements. This information can then be openly communicated across the supply chain. • The DSHP is a valid alternative to both the air and the ground source HP. • A significant reduction in the BHE length can be obtained by the DSHP. • The DSHP has a higher performance leading to a lower electric energy consumption. • The electric energy mix consumption during use plays a key role. Using all phases of a life cycle assessment (LCA), this paper analyses the environmental impact of a dual-source heat pump (DSHP) system that uses either the air or the ground as external heat sources. Data on the production were provided by the manufacturer of the heat pump prototype. The use phase was considered by evaluating the seasonal and annual energy performance of the system, using dynamic simulations. The system maintenance and end-of-life were modelled in accordance with the current regulations and statistical data in this sector. The Ecoinvent database was used as a reference for background data. The ReCiPe, CED and IPCC 100a impact methods were used to assess the environmental impact categories. The results were compared with those of conventional air and ground source heat pump systems. A sensitivity study on the influence of the energy in the use phase was carried out in terms of a variation in energy use and for different energy mixes, including photovoltaic energy. The results demonstrated the environmental validity of the technology in comparison with the two conventional heat pumps used for residential applications in different conditions. The results could be used by heat pump manufacturers to improve the design and performance of their products, by designers in the selection of thermal technologies, and by researchers involved in the study of similar emerging renewable energy technologies.
