Abstract Packaged air-conditioning units are widely used in commercial buildings. Most packaged units in the field are equipped with constant-speed supply fans and constant-speed compressors. Many efforts have been made to increase the operational efficiency of packaged air conditioners by retrofitting existing units with improved controls or developing innovative products with advanced designs. This paper evaluates the energy performance of a packaged unit with all variable-speed components, including the supply fan, the compressor, and the condenser fan. Both a field test and energy simulation are used to quantify the potential of energy savings from the variable-speed unit (VSU) against reference units. In the field test, the reference is a six-year-old existing unit. It was determined through monitoring for one year that the VSU had a 31% higher cooling efficiency than the reference unit. In the simulation, a retail building model was used to compare the performance between the VSU and two reference units—one representing existing units in the field and the other representing units meeting the latest energy code requirements by ASHRAE Standard 90.1. Simulation results showed that depending on the climate, the VSU can save electricity consumption (including both cooling and fan) by 45%–54% relative to the first reference and by 22%–29% relative to the second reference. This paper investigates application potential of the maisotsenko cycle (M-Cycle) evaporative air coolers in air conditioning systems in moderate climate (Poland is used as an example). Cross-flow M-Cycle heat and mass exchanger (HMX) was chosen as the most representative unit for this type of application. Analysis is based on the computer simulations performed during the peak day in summer (day when the highest cooling loads occur) and assumptions used in Polish standards for air conditioning systems. The obtained results show that evaporative cooling through Maisotsenko cycle has high application potential and allows to generate significant energy savings in compare to the systems equipped with standard heat recovery devices. The most favorable application for the M-Cycle in moderate climate is displacement ventilation, where proposed unit is able to cover almost all energy required by the air conditioning system. Most current building thermal codes impose upper limits to the predicted annual building energy demand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In the building design phase these predictions are obtained using thermal simulations with variable complexity. The simplest approach uses a single lumped thermal capacitance to model the high thermal mass building elements, combined with five thermal resistances (known as the 5R1C model proposed in EN ISO 13790 standard). This model is used by many European countries as the reference simplified methodology to assess overheating risk and calculate yearly building energy demand. This paper presents a successful extension of this model that allows for its application to the prediction of the internal air temperature of free-running buildings with double skin façades. The extension consists in an increased number of thermal resistances used to model the double skin façade zone. The extended model is validated using a set of detailed thermal measurements obtained in a free-running double skin test cell. For the case analysed the simplifications used in the RC model do not reduce the overall accuracy: the mean absolute error for room air temperature is approximately 1 °C, the same order of magnitude of more detailed EnergyPlus simulations (1.2 °C). Most of the state-of-the-art building simulation programs implement models in imperative programming languages. This complicates modeling and excludes the use of certain efficient methods for simulation and optimization. In contrast, equation-based modeling languages declare relations among variables, thereby allowing the use of computer algebra to enable much simpler schematic modeling and to generate efficient code for simulation and optimization. We contrast the two approaches in this paper. We explain how such manipulations support new use cases. In the first of two examples, we couple models of the electrical grid, multiple buildings, HVAC systems and controllers to test a controller that adjusts building room temperatures and PV inverter reactive power to maintain power quality. In the second example, we contrast the computing time for solving an optimal control problem for a room-level model predictive controller with and without symbolic manipulations. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. In tropical countries such as India, increasing the roof albedo helps to reduce the heat ingress through the roof. This further reduces air-conditioning energy consumption in conditioned buildings and increases comfort in unconditioned buildings. In order to help users determine the benefits of high albedo roofs under varying conditions, a simple calculator has been developed. Parameters such as location, building type, roof area, and surface properties of the roof are taken as inputs. Annual EnergyPlus simulations are performed for the given parameters and the results are displayed in both graphical and tabular formats. It also calculates the simple payback by comparing a given base case roof albedo with the proposed roof albedo. The calculator can perform comfort simulations for unconditioned buildings and simulates measures including a radiant barrier system and under deck roof insulation. The calculator also runs a parametric simulation between insulation thickness and roof albedo to find an optimum roof insulation thickness based on incremental internal rate of return. In this paper, measures such as planting urban greenery and using high-albedo paint to mitigate the urban heat-island effect, conserve energy, and reduce CO 2 emissions were assessed. As a typical energy-saving method for buildings, reducing the internal heat sources and increasing the insulation are also assessed. We used a coupled urban canopy and building energy model to predict the heat loads of buildings in city districts, the effects of air-conditioning on energy consumption, and air temperature changes. In this model, a vertical one-dimensional local atmospheric model is coupled with an air-conditioning load calculation model for buildings, making it possible to assess the interaction between anthropogenic heat release due to air-conditioning usage and the outside thermal environment. In this study, we selected a target study region in the city of Kawasaki, Japan. When typical city districts were assessed, planting greenery or increasing albedo achieved temperature reductions of 0.6–1.0 °C and 0.1–0.5 °C, respectively, and energy savings of 40–80 and 70–90 kJ/m 2 /day (per unit floor area) on a typical summer day. The results from the large-scale assessment show that urban greening or albedo increases achieved the highest energy savings, of up to 400 t-CO 2 /day, in the entire target study region. Solar-ground source heat pump system (SGSHPS) is a new type of high efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection air-conditioning technology. In this paper, experimental studies and numerical simulation on the performance of a SGSHPS operated in different heating modes were carried out. The experimental system was installed in Nanjing of China and solar collectors were coupled with ground heat exchangers (GHE) through an insulated water tank. Four operation modes including ground source heat pump (GSHP), combined operation mode, day and night alternate operation mode and solar U-tube feeding heat alternate operation mode were investigated during winter season. The heat pump performance, solar collecting performance and borehole wall temperature variations were analyzed and compared for various modes. The experimental results indicate that for the combined operation mode, the system operation efficiency during day can be improved by the assistance of solar energy, and the excess solar energy collected during day can be stored in ground by the GHE to improve the operation performance of GSHP during night. The proportions of heat source burdened by solar and geothermal energy are 43.3% and 50.2% respectively. For the alternate operation modes, the temperature resumption of ground surrounding the GHE can be well achieved due to the intermittent heat extraction of GHE or feeding solar heat into ground and thus the overall utilization efficiency of solar and geothermal energy can be improved greatly. During the whole experimental period, the average COPs are 2.37 and 2.72 for GSHP and SAHP operation mode respectively, and the corresponding parameters are 2.69, 2.65 and 2.56 for the combined operation mode, day and night alternate operation mode and solar U-tube feeding heat alternate operation mode, respectively. The average solar collecting efficiency are 43.6%, 47.3% and 38.8% for the combined operation mode, SAHP operation mode and solar U-tube feeding heat operation mode, respectively. Based on the unit modeling, a dynamic simulation program was constructed to investigate the seasonal performance of the SGSHPS operated in different heating modes, the simulation results show that the seasonal average COP are 3.67, 3.64, 3.52 and 3.48 for the combined operation, day and night alternate operation, solar U-tube feeding heat and GSHP mode, respectively. Abstract: In this paper, we outline a framework and the algorithms that will enable a home controller to accomplish occupancy-moderated multi-zone, multi-inhabitant space-conditioning under a demand-driven pricing scheme for electricity. We investigated the effects that influencing factors such as the number of zones and inhabitants, randomness of occupancy patterns and thermal mass of the residence can have on the efficacy of occupancy-moderated zonal space-conditioning (OZS) under different scenarios. Simulations driven by real data and highly realistic proxy data reveal that OZS can achieve improvements averaging 23% over the case without under certain settings. Our investigations also revealed that a house with heavier thermal mass stands to gain as much as 15% from OZS with pre-conditioning than a lighter one. We further offer a few pointers on reducing the cost of space-conditioning using OZS under a demand-driven pricing scheme to the average homeowner based on our findings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Many parameters have been used to evaluate the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs, most of them for air-conditioned buildings. In this paper, the interest is focused on parameters to assess the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs for non air-conditioned buildings. Five groups of parameters, some previously used and some newly proposed, have been analyzed. To test the evaluation parameters, numerical simulations of the periodic heat transfer through five different roof configurations have been carried out. This research shows the suitability of the energy transferred through the wall/roof during a day, the decrement factor, the discomfort degree hours, and the hot (or cold) thermal performance index to be used for thermal evaluation of wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. The sensitivity of these parameters with climatic conditions and with the outdoor surface solar absorptance is analyzed. Additionally, it has been shown that the steady-state thermal transmittance, the thermal admittance modulus, the periodic thermal transmittance modulus, and the surface decrement factor, calculated with surface temperatures, are not suitable parameters to evaluate wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. Abstract: Presently the essential research trend for sustainable buildings is the use of renewable energy sources and the development of new techniques of energy storage. Phase change materials (PCMs) may store latent heat energy in addition to the typical sensible energy capacity of current building materials, allowing to store significantly more energy during the phase change process (solid to liquid and vice versa). The incorporation of PCMs into building envelope solutions takes advantage of solar energy, contributing to the overall reduction of energy consumption associated to use of the air conditioning systems. This paper presents and discusses research developed in two main components: experimental testing and numerical simulation of a building component with PCM incorporation. The main goal of the experimental testing carried out was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of PCM macro encapsulated into a typical Portuguese clay brick masonry enclosure wall. It is evaluated the influence of the phase change process of the PCM over the attenuation and time delay of the temperature fluctuations for indoor spaces. The experimental results allowed the calibration and validation of the numerical model, enabling to carry out parametric studies with different PCMs quantity analysing consequent temperature damping and time delay. Abstract: This paper explores the potential of reducing the annual energy consumption of a central air-conditioned building through advanced evaporative cooling systems. The building considered is a typical three floor library building of a University. The regenerative evaporative cooling technology is coupled with the liquid cooled water chiller system to accomplish the energy conservation objective. Comparisons of the regenerative evaporative cooling are made with simple evaporative cooling to bring out the importance such a system. The well-known building simulation software, TRNSYS is used to carry out the heat load calculations and the dynamic simulations of the building. Annual energy consumptions of different components of the air-conditioning system are estimated for the existing water chiller system as well as for both coupled evaporative cooling systems (simple and regenerative). The annual energy consumptions, the indoor temperature, the relative humidity and the thermal comfort index ‘PMV’ are compared for all the three different air-conditioning systems. The coupling of direct and regenerative evaporative cooling technologies with water chiller system has shown, respectively, 12.09% and 15.69% savings in annual energy consumption of the building, while maintaining PMV between −1 and +1 for most of the hours in the year. Abstract: A glazed gallery in most old buildings is a space located on the first floor (and/or higher floors), facing south and almost fully glazed. As a result of the large glazed area and the orientation of the gallery, its temperature is warmer than the exterior and, in cold weather, it is used both as a space to insulate the adjacent rooms and as a leisure area, among other applications. In the framework of the ARFRISOL project (Bioclimatic Architecture and Solar Cooling), a demonstration container has been constructed in northern Spain (Asturias) which includes, among other bioclimatic elements, a glazed gallery. This gallery is considered as an element of Bioclimatic Architecture that enables solar radiation to be collected and the energy obtained to be used to support the building''s air conditioning system. It consists of a south-facing glazed exterior wall, an intermediate space or passage and a partially glazed interior wall. Dampers located in the floor and ceiling of the intermediate space and connected to the air ducts enable the air circulating inside the gallery to be heated or cooled, depending on the season of the year, before it is further conditioned and conveyed to the rooms. This paper focuses on the three-dimensional numerical simulation of the airflow inside the gallery. The aim is to obtain a model to evaluate the thermal energy obtained in this architectural feature, integrating the effect of certain variables, such as the incident solar irradiation, the outdoor temperature and the air flow rate circulating in the gallery. Abstract: This paper deals with the numerical three-dimensional prediction of the induced flow patterns around and inside a building, which is cross-ventilated in a natural way. The air change rate is controlled by two opposite openings on the building envelope, as a function of wind velocity and its incidence angle. The numerical methodology is based on the finite volume numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, using the CFD commercial code FLUENT. The numerical results are compared with available experimental data regarding the refresh rate of the building''s room and the relative velocity profiles at the window openings, indicating a good agreement. Furthermore, a detailed description of the natural ventilation process is provided, whilst additional information regarding the induced velocity and pressure field is presented; information which cannot be easily extrapolated by experimental methodologies. Finally, the impact of the inner topology of the building on the induced flow field is investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
