The carried scientific research regarding evaluation the hygrothermal effects of integration the vegetation into the building envelope was influenced with the differences in necessity to use air-conditioning in the houses, which are not surrounded with vegetation in horizontal structure and which have such vegetation during the summer time. The experimental testing is based on the precise measurements of the relative humidity and temperature, which were carried close to the building plaster in the place without influence of vegetation and between the wall and vegetation. Vegetation on the house, which was used for experimental purposes, is made up of the vine species with a thickness of 40 cm in the place where measurement was carried. Although the investigation takes longer, the paper aims to one month to show the summer time. The mathematical modelling of the obtained data was realized using the numerical as well as the statistical methods The paper aims especially on modelling the differences in relative humidity and temperature of the air and between the wall and vegetation. The dependence of temperature differences was expressed as a piecewise function using the method of Least squares of multiple regression as statistical method. Also the proportional energy to that which might be saved daily instead of its use for air-conditioning in the house was determined. Energy consumption and air quality index (AQI) prediction is important for efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system operation and management. A data-mining approach is presented in this paper for modeling and short-term prediction of the complicated non-linear system. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) ensemble performs best among the data mining algorithms discussed in this paper. A clustering-based method from preprocessing input data to construct the prediction models is proposed to decreases the prediction errors and the computational cost. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through a practical case study with both modeling and short-term prediction. The analytical results showed that the method was capable of reducing the prediction errors for modeling and short-term prediction by 11.05% and 12.21%, respectively, comparing with the models built without clustering method. In practice, monthly temperature records play a major role calculating the heating and cooling degree-days of the air conditioner management in buildings. Classically, heating and cooling degree calculations are based on the comparison of outdoor temperature measurements with a standard level called the base temperature. Truncating the temperature series at a constant base temperature causes heating (deficits) and cooling (surpluses) degrees. Since outdoor temperature records are of random character, future predictions with probabilistic and statistical methods are convenient means for calculations. All previous methodologies in the literature are based on crisp logic with simple mathematical calculations. This paper proposes a new methodological approach by converting the actual temperature record probability distribution function (PDF) into a probabilistic standardized degree indicator (SDI) in normal (Gaussian) PDF form with zero mean and unit standard deviation. Furthermore, as a new evaluation methodology fuzzy logic inference calculations are provided. SDI is divided into seven classes, three for cooling, heating, and a single class for uncooled-unheated states. Heating and cooling degree changes according to SDI values are presented with crisp and fuzzy sets. The application of the methodology is made for Kadıköy urban area on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. In the case of fuzzy set SDI air conditioned operation, it has been determined that there is cooling energy saving of approximately 25% compared to the crisp set. Abstract: This paper presents the first and second law analyses of the developed solar-desiccant air-conditioning system (SDACS). The results of the analyses show that the solar collector is the main contributor to both energy loss and exergy destruction of the system at 35.56% and 55.30%. The water pipe network contributed to 13.45% and 1.65% of energy loss and exergy loss. Electric heater contributed to 0.66% and 7.94% of the energy loss and exergy destruction. Storage tank contributed to 5.80% and 6.70% of energy loss and exergy destruction. Desiccant wheel contributed to 3.25% and 0.58% of energy loss and exergy destruction. Air fans contributed to 0.44% and 1.51% of energy loss and exergy destruction. At present, the thermal energy system (TES) has energy and exergy performances based on electric consumption of 2.428 and 0.199. The desiccant cooling system (DCS) has energy and exergy performances based on thermal consumption of 0.403 and 0.093. The desiccant cooling system has in terms of energy and exergy performances based on electric consumption of 1.627 and 0.029. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: The general methodology for estimating energy consumption in buildings, in accordance with the EN ISO 13790, needs the use of constants that are valid for each set of climatic conditions. Furthermore, there are variables other than building structure and weather conditions that have an influence. In this sense, recent research works showed the real effect of permeable coverings on indoor environmental conditions, by controlling indoor moisture. The effect of the associated heat and mass transfer on heating or cooling energy consumption is evident during the initial hours of building occupation. In the present paper, the general methodology of building heat demand calculation is modified to consider different levels of permeability of internal coverings, in order to obtain a more accurate model. Results showed that permeable coverings are related with a higher building utilisation factor, and that the value of this factor is higher in summer than in winter season. Consequently, despite the fact that the sensibility of energy consumption to internal coverings may be lower than to building envelope, new constants are proposed to express a relationship between building permeability and energy consumption, in order to apply the certification equation. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. In addition, over-cooling outdoor air (OA) flow couples the OA flow with the indoor heat removable needs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Almost in all the major cities in Asian countries, residential buildings are characterized with high-rise and high density. Under this circumstance, achieving comfortable and healthy indoor environment with minimized energy consumption becomes a very challenging engineering and societal issue. While the wide use of air-conditioning helped to improve thermal comfort, health problems associated with poor indoor air qualities have appeared more frequently. The increased energy consumption is also a great concern in view of its impact on the energy economics of the region. Drawn from some of the onsite measurements and survey, and also the author’s personal observation, some of the key issues are discussed in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The aim of the work accounted for in this paper has been to investigate a demand controlled ventilation (DCV) system for a typical Swedish multifamily building with exhaust ventilation. Another aim has been to apply and evaluate the IDA Indoor Climate and Energy (ICE) simulation software in this application. The work has been related to a renovation project of a large number of apartments with exhaust ventilation systems recently carried out by a Swedish municipal housing association.A typical apartment, chosen among 1000 existing apartments, has been modelled using IDA Climate and Energy simulation software. Four exhaust ventilation system concepts have been evaluated:The simulations show that it would be possible to achieve energy savings using occupancy and/or humidity controlled ventilation to reduce the average ventilation flow rate while keeping an acceptable indoor climate. Based on the simulation results a demand controlled ventilation system is developed and implemented in occupied apartments in order to investigate the performance.A measurement based validation of the simulation program indicates that it can be applied reliably.
