In hot and humid climate such as in Japan and south east Asia, dehumidification in summer is really important for air conditioning. Temperature and humidity independent control (THIC) of air conditioning system can handle sensible heat and latent heat separately, and provide good indoor environment and achieve energy conservation. Desiccant air handling unit is one of the major solution for THIC of air conditioning system. It needs hot water to regenerate sorbent which absorbs moist in the air. Combined heat and power can supply hot water at almost constant temperature for desiccant air handling system and also contribute to the business continuity plan of commercial buildings. However, there are still uncertainties about the factors which affect energy performance of desiccant air handling unit and the optimum design and operations in hot and humid climate. The objectives of this paper are to prove factors which affect energy performance of desiccant air handling unit by measurement analysis and show optimum condition of the desiccant air handling unit under various room conditions by simulation. Measurement analysis shows that energy performance of desiccant air handling unit depends not only on the inlet air condition to dehumidification wheel but also on designed supply air humidity. Furthermore, simulation results show the optimum inlet air condition entering dehumidification wheel under various supply air absolute humidity which is determined by design room conditions. This paper presents the development of a symbolic transformation based strategy with interpretability and visualisation for building energy performance assessment. The strategy was developed using shape definition language based symbolic transformation and hierarchical clustering. Advanced visualisation techniques including dendrogram, heatmap and calendar view were used to assist in understanding building energy usage behaviours. A comparison of this proposed strategy with a Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX) based strategy was also performed. The performance of the proposed strategy was tested and evaluated using the three-year hourly heating energy and electricity usage data of a higher education building. The result demonstrated that the proposed strategy can identify distinct building energy usage behaviours. The visualisation techniques used also assisted the information discovery process. The discovered information helped to understand building energy usage patterns. The comparison of the proposed strategy with the SAX based strategy showed that the proposed strategy outperformed the SAX based strategy for the case building tested in terms of the variations in building energy usage. A Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) is a term, subject to ambiguity, that could be used to describe a building with characteristics such as equal energy generation to usage, significantly reduced energy demands, energy costs equalling zero or net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Despite lacking an authoritative definition of NZEBs, this relatively new emerging concept in Australia provides significant opportunities to reduce GHG emissions, energy usage and operational energy costs for buildings owners. This paper aims to explore the existing NZEB models, assess the progression of NZEB literature, identify key policies encouraging NZEB development and recognise potential areas of NZEB research. Building energy simulators such as TRNSYS, EnergyPlus, and Esp-r offer an excellent opportunity for detailed design of house thermal model and its Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and provide very accurate simulation results useful for performance analysis and optimization process. In contrast, these energy simulators do not include sub-models of advanced devices/strategies for control of HVAC system operation and suffer from poor control mechanism. In addition to lack of an advance controller, they inherently offer no mechanism for estimating the future state of their process models based on forecast weather dataset. Hence, no predictive controller can be designed and implemented within these simulators. This paper discusses the development of a Matlab-TRNSYS co-simulator in order to control/manage a TRNSYS program, which was previously developed and calibrated based on the characteristics of a real case study house, with an advanced predictive controller. This co-simulator investigates the effectiveness of different predictive strategy planning models, including Load Shifting (LSH), Smart Dual Fuel Switching System (SDFSS), and LSHSDFSS, as the integration of fuel switching and load shifting strategy planning models on 24 h ahead energy cost saving of the case study house HVAC system. Simulation results of different consecutive sample days indicate that SDFSS could bring significant energy cost saving. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Cooling of buildings currently represents a considerable fraction of the total energy consumption in the world. Global and local climate change in combination with the projected population increase and economic development is expected to increase tremendously the future cooling energy demand of buildings and make it the dominant energy component. The present paper aims to present and discuss the details of the framework which defines the present and future cooling energy consumption of the building sector. The more recent quantitative and qualitative data concerning the penetration of air conditioning around the world are presented and analyzed. The main technological, economic, environmental and social drivers that determine the market penetration of air conditioning are identified and their impact is investigated. The potential future evolution of the main parameters that define the cooling energy consumption and in particular climate change, the population increase, income growth, potential technological improvements and the main socioeconomic drivers are investigated and existing forecasts are presented. Proposed methodologies to predict the future cooling energy consumption of the building sector are reported and discussed, while existing estimates and predictions regarding the future cooling energy consumption of individual buildings as well as of the total building sector are documented, evaluated and analyzed. Based on the explored inputs and forecasts, a model to predict the future cooling energy consumption of both the residential and commercial sector is developed. Three scenarios based on low, average and high future development, compared to the current development, are created and the range of the expected cooling energy demand in 2050 is predicted under various boundary assumptions. Abstract: With the actual environmental issues of energy savings in buildings, there are more efforts to prevent any increase in energy use associated with installing air-conditioning systems. The actual standard of thermal comfort in buildings ISO 7730 is based on static model that is acceptable in air-conditioned buildings, but unreliable for the case of naturally ventilated buildings. The different field studies have shown that occupants of naturally ventilated buildings accept and prefer a significantly wider range of temperatures compared to occupants of air-conditioned buildings. The results of these field studies have contributed to develop the adaptive approach. Adaptive comfort algorithms have been integrated in EN15251 and ASHRAE standards to take into account the adaptive approach in naturally ventilated buildings. These adaptive algorithms seem to be more efficient for naturally ventilated buildings, but need to be assessed in field studies. This paper evaluates different algorithms from both static and adaptive approach in naturally ventilated buildings across a field survey that has been conducted in France in five naturally ventilated office buildings. The paper presents the methodology guidelines, and the thermal comfort algorithms considered. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. In this paper, measures such as planting urban greenery and using high-albedo paint to mitigate the urban heat-island effect, conserve energy, and reduce CO 2 emissions were assessed. As a typical energy-saving method for buildings, reducing the internal heat sources and increasing the insulation are also assessed. We used a coupled urban canopy and building energy model to predict the heat loads of buildings in city districts, the effects of air-conditioning on energy consumption, and air temperature changes. In this model, a vertical one-dimensional local atmospheric model is coupled with an air-conditioning load calculation model for buildings, making it possible to assess the interaction between anthropogenic heat release due to air-conditioning usage and the outside thermal environment. In this study, we selected a target study region in the city of Kawasaki, Japan. When typical city districts were assessed, planting greenery or increasing albedo achieved temperature reductions of 0.6–1.0 °C and 0.1–0.5 °C, respectively, and energy savings of 40–80 and 70–90 kJ/m 2 /day (per unit floor area) on a typical summer day. The results from the large-scale assessment show that urban greening or albedo increases achieved the highest energy savings, of up to 400 t-CO 2 /day, in the entire target study region. Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems consume almost half of the total energy consumption in buildings. In order to reduce the energy consumption of HVAC systems in buildings, different passive heating and cooling strategies and thermal energy storage systems have been adopted. Water wall is an excellent short-term thermal energy storage system which can be used to maintain thermal comfort in buildings while reducing the heating and/or cooling load of the buildings. A significant amount of research work on water wall has been carried out since the 1980s. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the previous studies of water wall systems, focussing mainly on the performance of various configurations of water wall systems and the different research approaches adopted in the literature. The advantages and disadvantages of the different research approaches have been highlighted. It is revealed that the existing water wall research has been based mainly on an energy balance model and experimental modelling, but CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modelling has attracted little attention. Energy signatures for air conditioning systems can have characteristics which are not seen with heating systems. This paper explains and illustrates some of the characteristics that are specific to air conditioning systems and describes how energy signatures that take account of them can be applied to produce benchmarks, control charts and diagnostic information. It focusses on the use of energy signatures derived from measured daily system energy consumption. Daily energy signatures can generate more robust energy consumption benchmarks and provide additional insight into unusual energy demand patterns compared to monthly or weekly signatures, albeit requiring slightly more data. In particular, they distinguish between weekday and weekend consumptions. They can be used to generate benchmarks based on standardised annual consumption or standardised annual load factor. In addition they can be used to generate control charts to identify days of unusual consumption for individual systems. Control strategies of building shading devices can achieve important savings in the air conditioning and lighting energy consumption of a building. Calculation procedures of the different solar control devices (overhangs, side fins, etc.) are of special interest in annual energy performance simulation programs, which have to obtain solar gains in hourly time-steps and, more recently, in five minute time-steps. A common approach used to overcome this problem in the past was to select a representative day of a certain period of time and maintain the same results of shading calculations for the rest of the period. Nowadays, the new generation computers have drastically reduced computational costs, but some programs still use the former approach. The present paper assesses the error made by the use of it. Different overhang and side fin typologies and orientations, location latitudes and simulation time-steps have been analysed. 25% of the studied cases have shown annual average relative errors of 5% or greater in the incident solar radiation over the glazing surface. Common configurations, such as south oriented overhangs, show daily deviations of incident solar energy up to 0.48 kW h/m 2 , with a relative error of 17%, having hourly errors as high as 26%. • That aim is to quantify the impact of urban context on building cooling loads. • Building energy modeling is used to test 108 urban context configurations. • The configurations combine different context heights, distances, and orientations. • Savings of 26% and 24% were observed for total and peak cooling, respectively. • Implications on cooling system sizing and urban planning practices are discussed. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of the impact of the built urban context on the cooling energy performance of buildings subjected to extreme hot weather conditions. The proposed approach combines building energy modeling with an extensive parametric variation and statistical analysis scheme. It provides a direct quantification of inter-building shading on energy performance, with an emphasis on the cooling demand patterns for buildings of different types and sizes. Results show that the combined effects of urban context height, distance, and orientation can lead to significant reductions in cooling demand, reaching up to 26% for total cooling loads and 24% for peak cooling loads. The observed savings are particularly notable for residential buildings, making them an ideal target for urban development strategies that aim to leverage inter-building shading effects for energy conservation purposes. Moreover, an in-depth analysis of peak loads illustrates how the density and compactness of the urban form can be used as passive design strategies to reduce the load, and hence, the size of air conditioning systems. Obtained as a research result of conducted project, this paper presents an innovative, energy efficient multipurpose system for a sustainable globally cost-effective building's solar energy use and developed methodology for its dynamic analysis and optimization. The initial research and development goal was to create a cost-effective technical solution for replacing fossil fuel and electricity with solar energy for water heating for different purposes (for pools, sanitary water, washing) in one SPA. After successful realization of the initial goal, the study was proceeded and as a result, the created advanced system has been enriched with AC performance. The study success was based on understanding and combined measurements and by BPS made predictions of AC loads and solar radiation dynamics as well as on the determination of the synergetic relations between all relevant quantities. Further, by the performed BPS dynamic simulations for geographically spread buildings locations, it has been shown that the final result of the conducted scientific engineering R&D work has been the created system of confirmed prestigious to the sustainability relevant performance – globally cost-effective building integrated photovoltaic powered heat pump (HP), assisted by waste water heat recovery, for solar AC, water heating and saving. HVAC systems occupy a large part of the building's energy consumption. The development of fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) techniques for HVAC system is becoming increasingly essential for building energy saving. The present paper proposes a comparison study on the basic data-driven methods for variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system fault diagnosis. And five widely used data-driven methods were analyzed, which were decision tree (DT), support vector machines (SVM), clustering (CL), shallow neural networks (SNN), and deep neural networks (DNN). The six common types of fault data in VRF system and three evaluation indexes were used to compare the performance of the proposed five FDD methods in single fault and multiple faults. Results indicate that the single fault diagnosis performance of all methods is better than multiple fault diagnosis. The performances of DNN, SNN, and SVM are better than CART and CL no matter single fault or multiple fault diagnosis. Among them, we believe that the SVM method is preferred for single fault diagnosis and the DNN method is preferred for multiple fault diagnosis. And the performance of method CL is the worst, especially in the case of multiple fault classification, the accuracy is only about 48%. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. The results confirm our analysis of global datasets and show that humidex is a good predictor of indoor thermal comfort at high humidity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Energy efficiency and energy saving are important concepts bearing in mind by governments and population during the last years. There exist a widespread concern about fossil fuel depletions and the consequent sharp rise in their value. In particular, building is an area highly influenced by those issues. Studies indicate that 40% of the energy generated worldwide is consumed inside buildings, and then, measures to reduce energy consumption are required. In this work, an optimal controller for distributing the energy consumption rate inside a building and preserving, at the same time, the user welfare is proposed. More precisely, the paper presents a predictive control approach that obtains a high thermal comfort level optimizing the use of an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system by means of a cost function. The optimization procedure is based on the Lagrangian dual method, which allows the use of parallel programming paradigms in an easy way. Abstract: In general, a proper balance of temperature and humidity control is essential for efficient datacenter operation and is integral to protecting the significant investment in computer and network technology in datacenter facilities. However, the rising costs of energy and the drive to be green are resulting in a greater demand to conserve energy. One method of reducing facility costs for a chilled water plant is by adding an economizer. The purpose of this study is to develop energy models of the most common economizer systems. A normal chiller plant with an air-side economizer and a water-side economizer are compared. Results show that outdoor conditions influence facility energy consumption. This paper provides terminology and definitions for the two different types of economizer modes and compares their energy performance against key datacenter attributes in temperate or subtropical regions. The electrical end use breakdown and the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value for a typical year were estimated. The water-side economizer made it possible to achieve a maximum energy performance improvement of about 16.6% over the reference base cooling system, whereas the air-side economizer made it possible to achieve about 42.4% improvement. Abstract: This paper presents a study of an ejector expansion CO2 air conditioner system. A comprehensive analytical model for 3-ton air-to-air controllable ejector expansion transcritical CO2 air conditioners was developed and validated. The ejector component efficiencies were estimated using empirical correlations, instead of being simply assumed to be fixed values as done in other literature studies. Parametric studies of the ejector expansion CO2 systems show that the coefficient of performance (COP) and the cooling capacity reach maximum levels when the motive nozzle throat diameter becomes 2.8mm; the maximum cooling COP and cooling capacity occurred for a mixing section constant-area diameter of between 4.1 and 4.2mm; COP and cooling capacity are affected by the outdoor air temperature. At particular ejector geometries and an outdoor temperature of 37.8°C, the transcritical CO2 system using an ejector as the expansion device outperformed a conventional expansion-valve transcritical CO2 system in COP and cooling capacity by approximately 30.7% and 32.1%, respectively. A careful selection of ejector geometry, such as motive nozzle throat diameter and mixing section constant-area diameter, is critical in order to improve the performance of an ejector expansion CO2 air conditioning system. Abstract: This paper presents an investigation of the influence of local insulated roofing materials used in Burkina Faso on air conditioning loads of typical individual houses located in dry tropical climates. The walls are made of a composite clay–straw mixture whereas the insulated materials are made of red wood, white wood, and two assembled insulated panels. The thermophysical properties of the insulating materials as well as the clay–straw composite have been studied, utilizing an experimental apparatus based on the hot plate method. The values of the thermophysical properties obtained are in the same range as those published in the literature. Afterward, the house has been modeled using TRNSYS together with the climatic data of Ouagadougou. This simulation shows that the clay–straw mixture reduces the air conditioning load by about 8% compared to clay walled houses. As for the roof, the study indicates the influence of the insulated materials on the air conditioning load. Hence, a 1.5cm thick insulator made of red wood induces a saving of energy about 6.2% and 12.1% for an insulation panel made of natural fiber and a lime–cement mixture on the air conditioning load. Abstract: Numerous computer programs are available to calculate the energy efficiency of buildings. Many are based on the use of a reference building to determine the degree of efficiency. However, this methodology presents a major constraint when assessing a building after construction and during the use stage. To assess the energy efficiency of buildings, this paper proposes new indices based on energy consumption during different periods; as well as other parameters of the buildings such as construction area, number of users, and air-conditioned volume. Abstract: Thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS) are regarded as top-cooling systems rather than full air-conditioning systems. Therefore, adaptive thermal comfort models (ASHRAE55, ISSO74 or EN15251) are supposed to be applicable to TABS buildings, although the comfort model conditions are not necessarily satisfied. This paper investigates whether, for a moderate climate and with the heating and cooling set points chosen according to the adaptive models, the building’s energy use reduces. After all, applying adaptive models, if appropriate, is thought to lower energy use because higher maximum operative zone temperatures T op,max are allowed, compared to the conventional ISO7730 model. For purpose of generality, a building with an ideal heating and cooling system is considered. Analysis of moderate climate weather data reveals a low energy reducing potential for the ASHRAE55 and ISSO74 model, because high reference outdoor temperatures hardly occur. EN15251 on the other hand, allows very high T op,max and will lower the cooling need. A 2-zone building simulation demonstrates a higher cooling need for ASHRAE55 and ISSO74, compared to ISO7730. Because cooling is needed during the whole year, the lower winter T op,max of these adaptive models causes these unexpected results. Abstract: The significant and continuous increment in the global electricity consumption is asking for energy saving strategies. Efficient control for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) is the most cost-effective way to minimize the use of energy in buildings. In this framework, an energy management and control system (EMCS) has been developed to schedule electricity end-uses in the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. This paper presents an evaluation performed by using the EMCS of different control strategies for HVAC split systems. It analyzed the effect of different schedules for a common air-conditioning device and demand response strategies are tested in several situations. The economic saving is calculated taking into account the electricity contract clauses. Finally, a test is made for the control of a group of similar devices in order to reduce the maximum peak power in consumption and to obtain a flexible load shape with the HVAC loads. Abstract: The thermal performance of an enthalpy/membrane heat exchanger is experimentally investigated. The heat exchanger utilizes a 60gsm Kraft paper as the heat and moisture transfer surface for HVAC energy recovery. The heat exchanger sensible, latent and total effectiveness have been determined through temperature and moisture content measurements. The annual energy consumption of an air conditioner coupled with an enthalpy/membrane heat exchanger is also studied and compared with a conventional air conditioning cycle using in-house modified HPRate software. The heat exchanger effectiveness are used as thermal performance indicators and incorporated in the modified software. Energy analysis showed that an air conditioning system coupled with a membrane heat exchanger consumes less energy than a conventional air conditioning system in hot and humid climates where the latent load is high. It has been shown that in humid climate a saving of up to 8% in annual energy consumption can be achieved when membrane heat exchanger is used instead of a conventional HVAC system. Abstract: Passive cooling is considered as an alternative technology to avoid unwanted heat gains, to reduce urban heat islands and to generate cooling potential for buildings (limiting air-conditioning energy). According to materials and surface treatments, the roof can represent to be a major heat gain source from opaque elements of the building fabric, heating up the outer surface and increasing heat flow by conduction. This paper presents low-cost new radiative materials (1∉/m2) allowing to limit heat gains during diurnal cycle for hot seasons. To evaluate the relevance of these new substrates, their reflective UV–VIS–IR behavior are studied and compared to classical roofed materials available in industrial and developing countries. A 48m2 experimental roof having different surfaces (plate steel sheets, fiber cement, terra cotta tiles and corrugated sheets) allows to determine the temperature ratio δ between uncoated and coated materials. Up to 34% surface temperature gains are obtained for white coated CS, 25% for FC and ∼18% for TCT and PSS. Abstract: The general methodology for estimating energy consumption in buildings, in accordance with the EN ISO 13790, needs the use of constants that are valid for each set of climatic conditions. Furthermore, there are variables other than building structure and weather conditions that have an influence. In this sense, recent research works showed the real effect of permeable coverings on indoor environmental conditions, by controlling indoor moisture. The effect of the associated heat and mass transfer on heating or cooling energy consumption is evident during the initial hours of building occupation. In the present paper, the general methodology of building heat demand calculation is modified to consider different levels of permeability of internal coverings, in order to obtain a more accurate model. Results showed that permeable coverings are related with a higher building utilisation factor, and that the value of this factor is higher in summer than in winter season. Consequently, despite the fact that the sensibility of energy consumption to internal coverings may be lower than to building envelope, new constants are proposed to express a relationship between building permeability and energy consumption, in order to apply the certification equation. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: Automatic fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) can help enhance building energy efficiency by facilitating early detection of occurrence of system faults, especially those of air-conditioning systems, thus enabling rectification of the faults before much energy is wasted due to such faults. However, building owners may not invest in FDD unless they are convinced of the energy cost savings that can be achieved. This paper presents the results of a study on the energy cost impacts of a range of common system faults in variable air volume (VAV) air-conditioning systems, which are widely adopted for their good part-load energy efficiency. The faults studied include room air temperature sensor offset, stuck VAV box damper, supply air temperature sensor offset, stuck outdoor air damper and stuck/leaking cooling coil valve. The simulation results indicate that some faults may significantly increase energy use in buildings, for example, negative room air temperature sensor offset, stuck open VAV box damper, negative supply air temperature sensor offset, stuck open outdoor air damper and stuck open and leaking cooling coil valve. Since building occupants may adapt to the symptoms of these faults, such as reduced room air temperature, and thus may not complain about them, the occurrence of such faults are not immediately apparent unless a FDD system is available. Some other faults, e.g. positive supply air temperature sensor offset, positive room air temperature sensor offset, stuck closed cooling coil valve and stuck closed VAV box damper, may allow less energy to be used but will lead to unbearable indoor environmental conditions, such as high indoor temperature. Such faults, therefore, can easily be detected even without a FDD system, as there will be feedback from the building occupants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours. Ventilative cooling technologies have the potential to be an effective measure to reduce buildings energy consumption, by meeting some or all of the cooling requirement of a building without the need for mechanical cooling. Mixed-Mode (MM) buildings utilise both natural and mechanical cooling systems to meet their thermal energy demand. These buildings are able to guarantee that thermal comfort conditions are maintained, whilst exploiting the cooling potential provided by the climate. Effective management of the cooling systems in MM buildings is important to ensure that comfort is maintained and free cooling is exploited when available. While the implementation of hybrid ventilation systems is becoming more common, the current industrial and academic research state-of-the-art provide different and sometimes contrasting approaches to the management and evaluation of MM buildings. The current review provides an overview of studies into MM buildings performed in the last 10 years, analyzing in detail key factors that determine the potential of a building to save energy, including simulations inputs assumption, comfort standard used for evaluation, building and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems typologies and control strategy employed. A detailed analysis of the papers which had a focus on methods for control of hybrid ventilation system was undertaken. This highlighted the importance of coordination between systems to ensure operational effectiveness and showing that while the majority of the studies employed classical control techniques, predictive control methods were the most investigated approaches to fully exploit the potential efficiency of MM buildings.
