This paper examines the provision of demand-side ancillary services using building thermodynamics and heating ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In particular, we consider the secondary frequency control service where the load has to declare a power capacity and a nominal power at the beginning of the regulation period and then in real-time track the received regulation signal around its declared nominal power. A hierarchical control scheme is proposed in this paper. The local building controllers at the lowest level track the temperature setpoints received from the thermal flexibility controller which maximizes the flexibility of building’s thermal consumption. At the highest level, the electrical flexibility controller controls the HVAC system while maximizing the flexibility provided to the grid. The two flexibility control layers are based on robust optimization methods. A control oriented model of a typical HVAC system is developed, and simulations are carried out to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach. Results show that extra flexibility may be attained by exploiting the coefficient of performance (COP) of the chiller. A sleeping person is naturally immobile in a relatively small space. Hence, task\ambient air conditioning (TAC) can be best applied to a sleeping environment because of its proven performances in energy saving. However, when using previously developed the TAC systems for sleeping environment applications, cold draft was a serious issue and could hardly be avoided due to a high air velocity and a low air temperature inside an occupied zone. Therefore, in the experimental study reported in this paper, a radiation-based TAC (R-TAC) system has been developed, and its performances experimentally evaluated. In this paper, firstly, an experimental setup for a prototype R-TAC system, and experimental conditions and methods are reported. This is followed by presenting experimental results on the thermal comfort and ventilation performance. Finally, the issues of condensation risk when using the proposed R-TAC system are discussed. The study results presented in this paper have shown that the use of the R-TAC system could not only result in better thermal comfort and ventilation performances, but also effectively resolve the cold draft problem. Abstract: This paper summarizes a study undertaken to reveal potential challenges and opportunities for integrating optimization tools in net zero energy buildings (NZEB) design. The paper reviews current trends in simulation-based building performance optimization (BPO) and outlines major criteria for optimization tools selection and evaluation. This is based on analyzing user''s needs for tools capabilities and requirement specifications. The review is carried out by means of a literature review of 165 publications and interviews with 28 optimization experts. The findings are based on an inter-group comparison between experts. The aim is to assess the gaps and needs for integrating BPO tools in NZEB design. The findings indicate a breakthrough in using evolutionary algorithms in solving highly constrained envelope, HVAC and renewable optimization problems. Simple genetic algorithm solved many design and operation problems and allowed measuring the improvement in the optimality of a solution against a base case. Evolutionary algorithms are also easily adapted to enable them to solve a particular optimization problem more effectively. However, existing limitations including model uncertainty, computation time, difficulty of use and steep learning curve. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. If a heat recovery unit is used, the difference in heating performance is even greater, rising to −70%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Design engineers commonly oversize HVAC systems with the justification of needing a reasonable safety factor to manage periods more extreme than the specific design conditions. Unfortunately, the safety factor easily becomes excessive. The design engineers minimize their professional risk, and by doing so they are actually asking the building owner to pay an immediate penalty due to increased first cost of equipment and an ongoing penalty due to maintenance and energy use implications. The penalties associated with excessive safety factors are often not communicated to the client. This paper presents the results of a study of “rightsizing” rooftop HVAC systems. The study included intensive interviews with HVAC designers investigating the design process and extensive field measurement of rooftop units (RTUs) during peak cooling conditions. This paper focuses on defining the signature of oversizing, i.e. how to use the physical measurements to quantify the degree of oversizing of an RTU and how to estimate the penalty of oversizing in terms of energy consumption and peak electricity demand. Utility companies incentive programs have not yet identified mechanisms for incentivizing rightsizing of HVAC system. Abstract Understanding occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort is essential to defining the operational settings for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings. Due to the continuous impact of human and environmental factors, occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort level can change over time. Thus, to dynamically control the environment, thermal comfort should be monitored in real time. This paper presents a novel non-intrusive infrared thermography framework to estimate an occupant's thermal comfort level by measuring skin temperature collected from different facial regions using low-cost thermal cameras. Unlike existing methods that rely on placing sensors directly on humans for skin temperature measurement, the proposed framework is able to detect the presence of occupants, extract facial regions, measure skin temperature features, and interpret thermal comfort conditions with minimal interruption of the building occupants. The method is validated by collecting thermal comfort data from a total of twelve subjects under cooling, heating and steady-state experiments. The results demonstrate that ears, nose and cheeks are most indicative of thermal comfort and the proposed framework can be used to assess occupants’ thermal comfort with an average accuracy of 85%. Abstract: This paper aims to study the various parameters that affect the energy performance of commercial buildings in Singapore. The parameters are diverse, ranging from characteristics of construction of the walls and windows, to the various system settings and types within the building. Building energy performance is measured via two key indexes, namely, the Envelope Thermal Transfer Value (ETTV) and the annual cooling energy requirement (E c). Parameters related to these two indexes are identified. An additional parameter, the solar absorptance of the wall, is further incorporated to calibrate the ETTV equation. A relative ranking on the functional parameters of ETTV has been performed to evaluate their effectiveness in lowering the ETTV of buildings. In addition, the impact of using cladding on ETTV is also studied. A correlation for E c, expressed in the form of a simple linear equation, has been developed. This correlation accounts for the internal building loads, envelope loads, operating schedules and efficiency of the cooling equipment. Finally, ETTV and E c have been employed to study the effects of chiller over-sizing and ventilation rates on building cooling energy. Abstract: An extended Gebhart–Block model for large space buildings is proposed in this paper, which is used to predict the vertical temperature distribution of hybrid ventilation. Natural ventilation coupled with air-conditioning is described with a mathematical model. The indoor thermal environment formed by the air-conditioning and the natural ventilation can also be conducted for the potential analysis and optimal use of the natural ventilation. Experiments were carried out in an atrium building in Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences. • An improved system is proposed based on multi-fans with frequency conversion. • The improved system meets pressure control requirement in non-working modes. • The energy saving and cleanliness can be achieved by switching operation modes. Pressure control for cleanrooms in the pharmaceutical industry is a necessary means to avoid the cross-contamination. The pressure control of traditional air conditioning can only handle the working stage. In the non-working stage, the system cannot reduce the air change rate per hour (ACH) in order to alleviate the problem of high energy consumption. This paper proposes an improved air conditioning system, which focuses on the ability to control pressure gradient of the system in working and non-working mode. By theoretical derivation of the combined fan frequency conversion, when the impedance and volume of the infiltration air satisfy S i G Z , i = S j G Z , j = S k G Z , k = c o n s t a n t , the pressure gradient in multi-zone cleanrooms can remain stable. A mathematical model of the system has been established, which includes five modules: air pipe network, fan characteristic curve, fan operating point solution, variable volume damper characteristic curve and multi-zone network pressure gradient solution. The correctness of the model is verified by field measurements. Taking a clean workshop as case study, the room pressure can be stabilized in the range of ± 3 Pa by switching the working and non-working mode, which can save 39.8% of the energy consumption in non-working mode, while ensuring cleanliness. Abstract: This paper studies air flow in an air-conditioned room containing a distributed heat source and a localised heat source, into which cool air is supplied at low momentum through openings at a low level, and from which old air is extracted from a high level. This situation may be analogous to an auditorium containing a distributed audience and a localised group of actors and lighting on a stage, into which cool air is distributed from underneath the seating, and from which old air is removed through a ceiling, for example. Using a combination of a theoretical model and laboratory experiments, the paper shows that, in such conditions, if the localised heating is sufficiently strong compared to the distributed heating, the room will become stratified into two layers at steady state. A layer of warm air lies atop a cooler layer that attains a temperature above that of the supply air. This temperature structure depends primarily on the supply air flow rate and the ratio of the distributed heating to the total heat flux. For a room with fixed heating, increasing the supply air flow rate raises the interface between the upper and lower layers, while cooling both layers. The temperature in the upper layer depends on the total heat flux, but the temperature in the lower layer depends on the flux of distributed heating. For a room with a fixed supply air flow rate and a fixed total heat flux, increasing the strength of distributed heating warms the lower layer, but does not affect the temperature in the upper layer. Such increase in the strength of distributed heating also raises the interface. To achieve sufficient ventilation and thermal comfort in an occupied lower zone while keeping any pocket of uncomfortably warm air well above it, cool air needs to be supplied within an appropriate range of flow rates, which depends on the ratio of the distributed heating to the total heat flux. Abstract: This paper presents analytical and numerical predictions of heat and pressure drop characteristics of a floor with the ventilating ducts. The experimental results are used to validate the models. An acceptable accuracy between the computational simulation and measured performance data is obtained. The analytical method is implemented as the computer program, which is a useful and accurate tool in designing heating system with underfloor air distribution. In a conventional construction, the ventilation air enters the building through a combination of pathways, such as windows and vents, via cracks around external openings, joints between building materials, etc. By contrast, in a dynamic insulation construction, the ventilation air is drawn into the building through the insulation material of the building envelope. Structures with dynamic insulation incorporate porous insulating material in the envelope and air passes through the porous material.The aim of this paper is to present the experimental work carried out on a wall component that is a combination of dynamic insulation panel and a ventilated façade, tested under real weather conditions. The wall component consisted of two main sub-layers: the ventilated external envelope and the dynamic insulation (DI) sub-layer. The DI component consisted of layers of breathing materials that let the air enter the room at a reasonable pressure difference between the interior and exterior.The paper describes the experimental work carried out and the results drawn from the tests performed in the linked wall component under: (i) various differential pressure regimes between the interior and the exterior of the test cell and (ii) controlled and floating internal air temperature. This paper presents the development of a symbolic transformation based strategy with interpretability and visualisation for building energy performance assessment. The strategy was developed using shape definition language based symbolic transformation and hierarchical clustering. Advanced visualisation techniques including dendrogram, heatmap and calendar view were used to assist in understanding building energy usage behaviours. A comparison of this proposed strategy with a Symbolic Aggregate approXimation (SAX) based strategy was also performed. The performance of the proposed strategy was tested and evaluated using the three-year hourly heating energy and electricity usage data of a higher education building. The result demonstrated that the proposed strategy can identify distinct building energy usage behaviours. The visualisation techniques used also assisted the information discovery process. The discovered information helped to understand building energy usage patterns. The comparison of the proposed strategy with the SAX based strategy showed that the proposed strategy outperformed the SAX based strategy for the case building tested in terms of the variations in building energy usage. The main purpose of this research is to suggest a virtual water flowmeter applicable in hydraulic systems with low-cost sensors. Practical procedures for realizing virtual water flowmeters for constant flow pumps (i.e., Cases 1 and 2) and variable flow pumps (i.e., Cases 3 and 4) are proposed in this paper. In Case 1, for measuring the water flow rate through a constant flow pump, the pump head was measured and the water flow rate was estimated using the pump characteristic curve obtained from the manufacturer or by deriving an empirical model based on the field measurement data. In Case 2, the water flow rate through a valve with a constant flow pump was estimated by measuring the pressure head between the valve and the valve opening position. The valve characteristic curve can be obtained by deriving an empirical model based on the initial field test results. The water flow rate through the variable flow pump was calculated, using the pump affinity laws and an empirical model, by measuring the frequency (i.e., Case 3) or input power (i.e., Case 4). The initial setup and test procedures for virtual flowmeters are also proposed in this research for practical use in the field. To verify the proposed procedures, experiments were conducted using constant and variable flow pumps in a pilot system. It was found that the virtual water flowmeters showed 2.9% to 6.7% of root mean square error from Case 1 to Case 4, compared with an ultrasonic water flowmeter, through long-term experimental verification. Industry is stuck in reactive mode regarding the maintenance of their heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, which leads to inefficient operation. To avoid wasteful use of natural resources a proactive approach is needed. To enable this transition combined knowledge-based and data-driven approaches such as the Industrial Data Analysis Improvement Cycle (IDAIC) framework have been proposed, but there is a lack of practical implementation in the literature. In this paper, we implement the IDAIC framework on an Air Handling Unit (AHU) in a real industrial facility to address the lack of practical and reproducible real world analysis. The lack of domain knowledge-driven data mining solutions is addressed primarily in two parts. Firstly, data and control issues are addressed to enable the application of knowledge-based techniques to detect faults that are easily identifiable. Secondly, data-mining based techniques are applied which focus on the detection of more subtle faults which are indicative of component degradation. This approach enabled the development of data-driven analysis that visualises the effect of the different modes of operation on the energy consumption of the AHU, which allow the onsite facilities team to make more informed decisions regarding the maintenance of this AHU. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Most of the state-of-the-art building simulation programs implement models in imperative programming languages. This complicates modeling and excludes the use of certain efficient methods for simulation and optimization. In contrast, equation-based modeling languages declare relations among variables, thereby allowing the use of computer algebra to enable much simpler schematic modeling and to generate efficient code for simulation and optimization. We contrast the two approaches in this paper. We explain how such manipulations support new use cases. In the first of two examples, we couple models of the electrical grid, multiple buildings, HVAC systems and controllers to test a controller that adjusts building room temperatures and PV inverter reactive power to maintain power quality. In the second example, we contrast the computing time for solving an optimal control problem for a room-level model predictive controller with and without symbolic manipulations. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. This paper describes the development and focus in the analysis of the Brazilian metamodels used in the residential labeling system. The metamodels represent the thermal behavior of naturally ventilated and artificially air-conditioned residential buildings. A computational simulation experiment using the EnergyPlus program was conducted taking into account naturally ventilated and artificially air-conditioned residential buildings. Several parameters were considered for parametric simulations such as thermal transmittance, thermal solar absorptance, shading device, ventilation opening factor. The multi-linear regression method was used to predict the cooling degree hours and the annual energy consumption for heating and cooling for dormitories and living room. An assessment on the accuracy of the Brazilian metamodels for residential buildings was analyzed and showed that the regressions include standard errors that may influence the metamodels accuracy. Therefore, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are presented as an alternative to improve the metamodels used in the Brazilian regulation. Comparing both statistical method multi-linear regression and artificial neural network method it can be seen that ANN presented lower results for standard deviation end root mean square errors. Therefore, ANNs are recommended to improve the accuracy of the prediction in further behavior associated with the labeling system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an investigation carried out for evaluating the dynamic thermal performance of a residential house using a multi-zone building model simulated with the help of TRNSYS 17. The building model integrates systems such as an air–air heat exchanger (AAHE), a water–air heat exchanger (WAHE) coupled with an earth–water heat exchanger (EWHE). The temperature based control strategies for these systems are recommended based on the simulation results. The AAHE and the EWHE have impact of 66% and 7% respectively on reduction of the annual heating consumption of the house. All the integrated systems together contribute significantly (72%) in reducing the annual heating consumption of the house. The annual heating consumption of the house per unit floor area is estimated as 6.9 kWh/(m 2 year) which is within the passive house standard. There is significant reduction of the overheating time above 25 °C due to the EWHE installed in the present house with annual ventilation air cooling contribution of 602.6 kWh/year. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. The results confirm our analysis of global datasets and show that humidex is a good predictor of indoor thermal comfort at high humidity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Energy efficiency and energy saving are important concepts bearing in mind by governments and population during the last years. There exist a widespread concern about fossil fuel depletions and the consequent sharp rise in their value. In particular, building is an area highly influenced by those issues. Studies indicate that 40% of the energy generated worldwide is consumed inside buildings, and then, measures to reduce energy consumption are required. In this work, an optimal controller for distributing the energy consumption rate inside a building and preserving, at the same time, the user welfare is proposed. More precisely, the paper presents a predictive control approach that obtains a high thermal comfort level optimizing the use of an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system by means of a cost function. The optimization procedure is based on the Lagrangian dual method, which allows the use of parallel programming paradigms in an easy way. This may reduce the computational effort proportionally to the number of processing elements when the problem to solve is large. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The possibility of storing thermal energy within the building structure to reduce building energy consumption has been studied. Hollow core panels used for a building structure are able to pass air through core cavities and be utilized as thermal storage. Previously, thermal storage models for ventilated slab system using the panels have been developed but it has typically focused on the system development and performance evaluation under particular conditions. As a result, it has been difficult to understand the effect of the system on whole building energy performance. This study develops a computational model for a ventilated slab system and investigates its implementation in a whole building energy simulation program, EnergyPlus. The system has two major components: an auxiliary air handling unit (AHU) and a radiant slab with hollow core panels. The auxiliary AHU includes an outside air mixer, coils, and a fan to produce either conditioned or unconditioned air depending on the user''s input. The air is then controlled by a defined delivery method, after passing through the cavity of the panel. Abstract: An experimental study is reported in this paper for a diffuse ceiling ventilation concept. The analyses were carried out with two different porous surfaces mounted in a suspended ceiling: perforated tiles of aluminium and of gypsum. Ventilation air was supplied above the suspended ceiling effectively creating a plenum for air distribution. The experiments were carried out in a climatic chamber and documented an air change efficiency equal to fully mixed conditions with a pressure drop of 0.5–1.5Pa and with no evidence of thermal discomfort. The magnitude of the pressure drop was enough to sustain the pressure of the plenum and ensure uni-directional airflow through the ceiling. Consequently only reverse flow of insignificant magnitude was observed which has a positive impact on the hygiene of the plenum. Furthermore, the measurements documented that the ceiling acts as a radiant cooling surface which increases the potential and applicability of the concept. Risk of thermal discomfort was not disclosed but the study did show evidence of large fluctuating air movements which could stem from transient behaviour creating sensations of draught to the occupants. Abstract: Fenestration has always been regarded as the weak element in the building envelope due to its role in determining of the energy balance of a building. At the same time, cooling performance is becoming a significant parameter for evaluating the energy performance of buildings in Europe. Due to the plethora of window products with advanced properties currently existing on the market, it is not always easy for engineers to select the optimum solution. In this paper, the cooling performance of windows in the warmest part of Europe is evaluated with regard to their geometrical, thermophysical and optical characteristics, as well as their shading provisions. The analysis shows that the contribution of the windows in determining cooling loads is maximized when their solar transmittance is high and their thermal transmittance is low. Moreover, in the Mediterranean regions the increased thermal efficiency of transparent elements in buildings with controlled ventilation, such as offices, prohibits the dissipation of heat toward the ambient environment and ultimately result in higher cooling energy loads. Abstract: Energy efficiency is a central target for energy policy and a keystone for sustainable development. However, the lack of a valid set of energy efficiency indicators (EEI) sufficiently accurate, robust and repeatable is significantly affecting the success of such policies and causing no little confusion and speculation on this field. Therefore, it appears to be essential to identify suitable methods to measure energy efficiency and to achieve consensus over the use of a valid set of EEI. This paper reviews the definition of efficiency and its quantification. First, a methodology is introduced in order to construct EEI. This methodology is applied to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and an exhaustive classification of EEI is proposed at four levels: global, service, subsystem and equipment. A new ‘subsystems approach’ is introduced for the energy analysis of HVAC systems based on generation efficiency, transportation specific consumption and the ‘demand ratio’, a new measure of HVAC thermal energy efficiency. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: Energy used for building heating, ventilating and air conditioning contributes to a great share in the total energy consumption worldwide. Better understanding and management of energy distribution in those processes is essential for the improvement of process quality and efficiency of energy use. This paper presents the data-based mechanistic modelling approach which has been developed to model the dynamic indoor temperature distribution in an imperfectly mixed ventilated airspace based on energy input to the system. The combination of classical heat balance differential equations and the data-based modelling techniques for continuous-time system has brought a robust dynamic model suitable for model-based controlling and yet providing a profound insight at the energy and temperature distributions in ventilated systems. The effect of changing heat input on the temperature distribution inside a ventilated structure was studied. Dynamic response of indoor temperature to varying energy input could be explained by a second order transfer function model with a high coefficient of determination (R 2 >0.99), a low Young Identification Criterion (YIC<−2.3) and a low model standard error (SE<0.028°C). The physically meaningful model parameters as local heat load fraction γ and the coefficient of local temperature change h (°CJ−1) were revealed. This modelling approach is very useful for future design of model-based predictive controller for zonal control of indoor temperature by the direct adjustment of heat load into ventilated structures. Abstract: In earlier work , NIST developed a climate suitability analysis method to evaluate the potential of a given location for direct ventilative cooling and nighttime ventilative cooling. The direct ventilative cooling may be provided by either a natural ventilation system or a fan-powered economizer system. The climate suitability analysis is based on a general single-zone thermal model of a building configured to make optimal use of direct and/or nighttime ventilative cooling. This paper describes a new tool implementing this climate suitability methodology and its capability to consider an adaptive thermal comfort option and presents results from its application to analyze a variety of U.S. climates. The adaptive thermal comfort option has the potential to substantially increase the effectiveness of natural ventilation cooling for many U.S. cities. However, this impact is very dependent on the acceptable humidity range. If a dewpoint limit is used, the increase is significant for a dry climate such as Phoenix but much smaller for humid climates such as Miami. While ASHRAE Standard 55 does not impose a limit on humidity when using the adaptive thermal comfort option, the necessity of limiting humidity for other reasons needs to be considered. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a three dimensional study for evaluating the temperature profiles and air flow movement in a model room with a numerical model based on the Euler equations. Numerical results obtained for two scenarios of ventilation and air conditioning are compared with the predictions of a Navier–Stokes model. These numerical results are validated by experimental results measured in the model room. A comparison of the local thermal comfort indices PMV and PPD obtained experimentally and numerically is also presented. Results show that the Euler model is able to predict adequately total thermal comfort in the model room. Abstract: This paper presents a top-down strategy for detecting faulty HVAC units across different levels. Energy flow models of HVAC units are developed while the energy is the main feature extracted from the vast amount of real-time data of the HVAC system in a building. A temporal and spatial partition strategy for analyzing HVAC units is proposed. The partition takes into account of architectural, environmental, and human factors. The partition strategy leads to more appropriate thresholds for fault detection. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the detection of a systemwide fault and a fault at the VAV level. Abstract: Natural ventilation can contribute to the reduction of the air conditioning demand and to the improvement of thermal comfort in buildings. In this paper, the flow field and the air change rate generated by a simple configuration of natural ventilation, namely single-sided ventilation, are examined experimentally. The experiments are realized in a full scale building exposed to outdoor conditions, using several measurement techniques. The main features of the flow generated by stack and wind effect are examined for different outdoor conditions (temperature difference, wind speed and direction). Finally, measured air change rates are compared to those calculated by existing correlations in order to analyze their applicability to the experimental configuration. Results show that the wind generates turbulence diffusion at the opening, counteracting the stack effect. Moreover, in the case of windward opening, there is an additional effect, namely the effect of mixing layer, which tends to increase the airflow rate. Existing correlations give reasonably good results in the case of windward opening, while in the case of leeward opening they overestimate the airflow rate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. Based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model''s parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Abstract: In this paper numerical transient simulations were used to investigate the air flow patterns, distribution and velocity, and the particulate dispersion inside an existing typical hospitalization room equipped with an advanced Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), with Variable Air Volume (VAV) primary air system designed for immune-suppressed patients never modelled before. The three-dimensional models of the room consider different, most typical, positions of the patients. Results indicate the best conditions for the high induction air inlet diffuser and the scheme of pressures imposed in the room to provide the effective means of controlling flows containing virus droplets. We believe that our work exemplifies the usefulness of numerical investigations of HVAC performances in real situations and provides important recommendations towards disease control and careful design and optimization of ventilation in hospital settings. Abstract: This paper is concerned with the development of a mathematical model, capable of describing the quasi-steady state performance of an integrated ground source heat pump, which is used for heating and cooling of an institutional building located in a Mediterranean climate. The model is structured on functional basis according to the heat pump vapour compression or primary circuit, a secondary ground loop circuit and a secondary building loop circuit. Heat pump heating and cooling capacities, as well as COP, are considered to be dependent variables and are estimated in the model using performance fitted maps. Independent variables include: compressor speed, circulation pump speeds, ground loop return temperature and building circuit return temperature. The model is validated using data from a full-scale ground source heat pump installation. The validated model is used to examine system capacity and performance sensitivity to different control optimisation strategies, including set-point control of room air temperature, room air bandwidth temperature, building loop return water temperature and building loop return bandwidth temperature. Abstract: The provision of balcony to the living room of a residential flat offers a number of merits including improved view enjoyment, enhanced ventilation and increased planting space. In addition, a balcony can act as an overhang and provide solar shading as well as electricity saving of the air-conditioning system. This paper reports the findings on the energy and environmental impact due to the provision of a balcony. In this study, a typical residential flat with balcony constructed at the living room was modeled and the energy performance was investigated with the use of the typical weather data set of a subtropical city, Hong Kong. The effects of balcony''s orientation and glazing material of window were also evaluated. It was found that the residential flats facing various orientations (N, E, S, W, NE, SE, SW and NW) can offer substantial energy saving in air-conditioning system due to the shading effect of balcony. The building case with southwest facing balcony and clear glass glazed window gave the highest saving percentage of 12.3% in annual air-conditioning consumption. In terms of cost payback period, the values were estimated as 25.9 years (based on extra construction cost of a balcony) and over 100 years (based on extra purchasing cost), respectively. On the other hand, the energy payback period was 22.4 years for this building case. The provision of balcony to the living room of residential flat was found environmentally feasible in Hong Kong. Abstract: The significant and continuous increment in the global electricity consumption is asking for energy saving strategies. Efficient control for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) is the most cost-effective way to minimize the use of energy in buildings. In this framework, an energy management and control system (EMCS) has been developed to schedule electricity end-uses in the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. This paper presents an evaluation performed by using the EMCS of different control strategies for HVAC split systems. It analyzed the effect of different schedules for a common air-conditioning device and demand response strategies are tested in several situations. The economic saving is calculated taking into account the electricity contract clauses. Finally, a test is made for the control of a group of similar devices in order to reduce the maximum peak power in consumption and to obtain a flexible load shape with the HVAC loads. Abstract: This paper deals with the numerical three-dimensional prediction of the induced flow patterns around and inside a building, which is cross-ventilated in a natural way. The air change rate is controlled by two opposite openings on the building envelope, as a function of wind velocity and its incidence angle. The numerical methodology is based on the finite volume numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, using the CFD commercial code FLUENT. The numerical results are compared with available experimental data regarding the refresh rate of the building''s room and the relative velocity profiles at the window openings, indicating a good agreement. Furthermore, a detailed description of the natural ventilation process is provided, whilst additional information regarding the induced velocity and pressure field is presented; information which cannot be easily extrapolated by experimental methodologies. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. Abstract: This paper presents an adaptive Smith predictor-based self-tuning PI controller and its application to the air-conditioning system of a test room. The significant time delay of air-conditioning processes can lead to degradation of performance and instability of the control loop. The parameters of air-conditioning processes vary due to the changes in the operation conditions. By using a recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm combined with a z-domain fitting method, the parameters of the air-conditioning process in the closed loop including time delay can be estimated online. Based on the estimated dead-time, a Smith predictor, which uses a reference model, is adopted to reduce the unfavorable effects of the time delay in the air-conditioning system. Based on the predicted error and estimated values, the control signal of the control loop is calculated by a self-tuning PI controller using ITAE tuning rules. The performance, robustness and effectiveness of the proposed control method are validated in the experimental platform. The corresponding performance of the proposed control method is compared with an adaptive PI controller. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed strategy achieves better performance compared with the adaptive PI controller considering the effects of set-point changes, parameter variations or load disturbances in HVAC systems. Abstract: Design guidelines for natural ventilation (NV) in buildings focus on the potential hourly air change (ACH) rates based on the building space parameters. Critically, external airflow data is often assumed on the basis of a single mean wind speed and an associated prevailing wind direction. This can result in significant variation in ventilation rates and comfort conditions when non-design external wind conditions prevail. This paper describes a CFD study aimed at examining the influence of variations in external wind speed and direction on the air change rate for the atrium space of a two-storey naturally ventilated building. The building atrium is ventilated by a series of entry vents on one wall of the building in conjunction with roof vents. External wind speeds from 25 to 250% of the mean site wind speed (5.7m/s) were examined and found to result in an almost linear increase in the ACH rate. For a single wind speed, the relationship between wind direction and the ACH rate was also found to be approximately linear for wind directions between 0° and 90° (orthogonal and parallel) to the wall vent openings, but non-linear for other wind directions (90–135°). More generally, the significant variation in the atrium ACH rate with changes in external wind conditions, evident in this particular building model, illustrates the importance of considering non-design wind conditions when designing NV buildings. Abstract: Natural ventilation has gained prominence in recent times as a bespoke method of ventilating buildings. The two fundamental principles of natural ventilation are stack effect and wind driven ventilation. This paper reviews miscellaneous wind driven ventilation designs with respect to traditional means such as wind towers and more modern techniques including turbine ventilators and wind catchers. A distinction is made between specific types of wind driven ventilation techniques depending on their operation and mode of engagement with the wind. For example, a static wind catcher is classified as passive; a rotating wind cowl as a directed passive technique and a rotating turbine ventilator is classified as outright active due to its constant rotation with the wind. Abstract: The coupling of thermal mass and natural ventilation is important to passive building design. Thermal mass can be classified as external thermal mass and internal thermal mass. Due to great diurnal variation of ambient air temperature and solar radiation intensity, heat transfer through building envelopes, which is called external thermal mass, is a complex and unsteady process. Indoor furniture are internal thermal mass, affecting the indoor air temperature through the process of absorbing and releasing heat. In this paper, a heat balance model coupling the external and internal thermal mass, natural ventilation rate and indoor air temperature for naturally ventilated building is developed. In this model, the inner surface temperature of building envelopes is obtained based on the harmonic response method. The effect of external and internal thermal mass on indoor air temperature for six external walls is discussed of different configurations including lightweight and heavy structures with and without external/internal insulation. Based on this model, a simple tool is developed to estimate the indoor air temperature for certain external and internal thermal mass and to determine the internal thermal mass needed to maintain required indoor air temperature for certain external wall for naturally ventilated building. Abstract: In the last decade a lot of research effort has been spent on identifying the effect of the urban climate on the energy performance of buildings and HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) systems. In this paper a methodology is proposed to assess that effect by the exclusive use of modeled data. Particularly, by using a downscaling modeling procedure a process for the generation of weather files for energy calculations is achieved. From a non-hydrostatic weather model the urban climate of the city of Lisbon is simulated and via a weather generator climatic data files for the buildings’ simulation software are derived. Abstract: Hospital operating rooms (ORs) require efficient HVAC installations to secure the highly demanding indoor environmental conditions for patients and medical personnel. This paper reviews published standards and guidelines on design, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of HVAC installations in hospital ORs, indoor thermal conditions, and summarizes measured data from short monitoring of indoor thermal conditions along with audit results and main characteristics of 20 ORs in 10 major Hellenic hospitals. Measured indoor temperature ranged from 14 to 29°C, and relative humidity from 13 to 80%. The number of air changes per hour ranged from 3.2 to 58 ACH. The commonly encountered problems include insufficient indoor air exchange, poor control on indoor thermal conditions, bad space ergonomics that influence the ventilation system operation, poor technical installations maintenance and understaffed technical departments. Abstract: Natural ventilation, relying on openings in the façade, is applicable to a limited range of climates, sites and building types. Advanced naturally ventilated buildings, such as those using stacks to encourage buoyancy driven airflow, or hybrid buildings, which integrate both natural and mechanical systems, can extend the range of buildings and climate within which natural ventilation might be used. This paper describes the design of a new library building for a college, located near Chicago, which uses a new hybrid ventilation concept despite the severe continental climate. The likely operation of the building is illustrated using dynamic thermal modelling and computational fluid dynamics analyses. The new building challenges ingrained preconceptions about building designs for severe climates and exposes barriers to low energy buildings posed by national standards and guidelines. Abstract: This paper reports on the results of a questionnaire survey on sleeping thermal environment and bedroom air conditioning in high-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong. The survey aimed at investigating the current situation of sleeping thermal environment and bedroom air conditioning, in order to gather relevant background information to develop strategies for bedroom air conditioning in the subtropics. It focused on the use patterns and types of bedroom air conditioning systems used, human factors such as the use of bedding and sleepwear during sleep, preference for indoor air temperature settings in bedrooms, ventilation control at nighttime with room air conditioner (RAC) turned on, etc. The results of the survey showed that most of the respondents would prefer a relatively low indoor air temperature at below 24°C. Most of the respondents might however not be satisfied with the indoor air quality (IAQ) in bedrooms in Hong Kong. On the other hand, 68% of the respondents did not use any ventilation control intentionally during their sleep with their RACs turned on. Abstract: Conventional ventilation control schemes for VAV systems cannot achieve acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ). Ventilation control at the zone level is one of key factors affecting IAQ and also impacts thermal control. This paper proposes a multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) controller to control temperature and ventilation of multiple zones in a building with a model predictive control (MPC) strategy. The controller follows the ventilation rate procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62.1 and meets its ventilation requirements. Simulation-based experiments under four types of typical weather conditions are conducted to evaluate the controller''s performance. Abstract: This paper presents the modeling of a desiccant wheel used for dehumidifying the ventilation air of an air-conditioning system. The simulation of the combined heat and mass transfer processes that occur in a solid desiccant wheel is carried out with MATLAB Simulink. Using the numerical method, the performance of an adiabatic rotary dehumidifier is parametrically studied, and the optimal rotational speed is determined by examining the outlet adsorption-side humidity profiles. The solutions of the simulation at different conditions used in air dehumidifier have been investigated according to the previous published studies. The model is validated through comparison the simulated results with the published actual values of an experimental work. This method is useful to study and modelling of solid desiccant dehumidification and cooling system. The modeling solutions are used to develop simple correlations for the outlet air conditions of humidity and temperature of air through the wheel as a function of the physically measurable input variables.
