Highlights • The aim of this research is to investigate the thermal performance of the prototype building to assess overheating in the summer, particularly the long-term heatwave period in the UK. • To understand the impact of energy efficient technologies on occupants' wellbeing and health in order to identify occupants' thermal comfort level in these types of dwellings. • The study adopts a quantitative research design based on indoor monitoring, in-situ measurements and dynamic simulation modelling. • This clearly indicates that due to this prototype house's structural construction material behaviour in a heatwave and its location (southwest facing orientation), it is susceptible to very high overheating risk. • The results found from the monitoring during a long-term heatwave in the summer of 2018 provided strong evidence for overheating and thereby thermal discomfort in many occupied spaces, particularly on the first floor followed by several spaces on the ground floor. Meanwhile, all the occupied spaces appeared to be well above the acceptable thermal comfort benchmark throughout the data collection period. • To calibrate the building performance, as well as the building materials and components adopted in the model, the measured indoor environment data were scrutinised in conjunction with the IES simulation results. Abstract There is growing evidence that terraced houses—thermally lightweight, well insulated, naturally ventilated with three exposed wall surfaces—are at risk of overheating, especially in south-eastern England. The aim of this study is to evaluate the building performance and develop a reliable building simulation, which will be employed in the second phase of the study: developing affordable and feasible passive design strategies to support the energy-efficient building systems of the construction industry. This paper reports on the results from the first phase of the study where a quantitative methodology, including indoor and outdoor environmental monitoring, in-situ measurements and building simulation modelling, was adopted. The performance of a case study was modelled and simulated via employing Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) software suite. The results from the base-case were analysed according to the adaptive thermal comfort of Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Technical Memorandum 52 guidelines: The Limits of Thermal Comfort—Avoiding Overheating in European Buildings. The spaces studied within the case study house were observed to exceed the acceptable limits of thermal comfort; particularly, the large bedroom within this zone exceeded the upper limit for overheating up to 11 h daily. Furthermore, the results from the monitoring study indicate a high risk of summertime overheating across all the case study settings, especially during short-term peaks in outdoor temperatures. The main reasons for the problematic thermal performance were identified as well-insulated and fully air-tight building fabric, the lack of sufficient ventilation through the living spaces and excessive heat gains through the composite cladding material. Abstract Packaged air-conditioning units are widely used in commercial buildings. Most packaged units in the field are equipped with constant-speed supply fans and constant-speed compressors. Many efforts have been made to increase the operational efficiency of packaged air conditioners by retrofitting existing units with improved controls or developing innovative products with advanced designs. This paper evaluates the energy performance of a packaged unit with all variable-speed components, including the supply fan, the compressor, and the condenser fan. Both a field test and energy simulation are used to quantify the potential of energy savings from the variable-speed unit (VSU) against reference units. In the field test, the reference is a six-year-old existing unit. It was determined through monitoring for one year that the VSU had a 31% higher cooling efficiency than the reference unit. In the simulation, a retail building model was used to compare the performance between the VSU and two reference units—one representing existing units in the field and the other representing units meeting the latest energy code requirements by ASHRAE Standard 90.1. Simulation results showed that depending on the climate, the VSU can save electricity consumption (including both cooling and fan) by 45%–54% relative to the first reference and by 22%–29% relative to the second reference. Occupants account for a significant impact on building performance through their interactions with zone level building components. Empirically-derived occupant models, despite their potential to represent occupants’ impact in building performance simulation (BPS), have minimal penetration in design and code compliance processes. Instead, occupants are represented with static schedules or simple deterministic triggers. The objective of this paper is to better understand the influence of assumptions made in representing occupant interactions with building components over a BPS model's energy use and comfort predictions, as well as their ability to promote better design decisions. To this end, the energy and daylight performance of a generic perimeter office space in Ottawa, Canada were evaluated using a set of comprehensive performance metrics. Results indicate that representing dynamic occupant–building interactions lead to different energy predictions from the static schedules. The maximum difference in the total electricity use was for window-to-wall area ratios (WWR) of 20%, which was about 30% higher with the stochastic cases than the blind-open static cases. WWR 60% and 40% generally yielded the lowest lighting electricity use with the static and stochastic cases, respectively. This is the second part of the paper “Simplified method for shading-loss analysis in BIPV systems”. The objective of Part 2 is to apply the simplified method described in Part 1 in order to estimate the influence of partial shadings on the performance of four installed and in operation BIPV systems. The method consists in identifying and quantifying the shading on a surface, relating the fraction of shaded area with the percentage of incident irradiation reduction during the same period, in order to propose a shading index (SI) that represents the energy losses on partially shaded PV systems. SI was validated through the analysed case studies and it was proved to be a convenient way of estimating the PV generation of partially shaded PV systems. This method is independent from the electric configuration and can be used for already installed PV systems, or surfaces under investigation for PV installations, both through manual calculations and also through calculations using dedicated software packages. Green building design is presently among the hottest research topics in the world. Maintaining a comfortable indoor environment with minimum energy consumption is a challenging task that attracts the attention of experts around the world. With the recent advances in building performance simulation tools, it is now possible to predict and assess building performance at the design stage. Simulation-based optimization of building design is a potential application that connects building performance simulation with optimization algorithms. In this paper, numerous studies on the optimization of building envelope design were assembled and reviewed. Popular optimization algorithms were compared and discussed. Targeted objectives were collected and summarized. Based on the statistical results, the limitations in this research area were identified, and some potential breakthroughs were suggested. This paper introduces a Human and Building Interaction Toolkit (HABIT) for simulating the thermally adaptive behaviors and comfort of office occupants alongside building energy consumption. The toolkit uses the Building Controls Virtual Test Bed (BCVTB) to co-simulate a field-tested, agent-based behavior model with an EnergyPlus medium office model. The usefulness of the toolkit is demonstrated through a series of zone and building-level case study simulations that examine the wisdom of pairing local heating and cooling options with strategic thermostat set point offsets, judging from the energy, Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and cost perspectives. Results generally suggest that trading efficient local heating/cooling options for whole space conditioning has both energy and comfort benefits, saving up to 28% of monthly HVAC energy while improving the acceptability of thermal conditions in a Philadelphia climate. Nevertheless, cost analysis shows that the fuel source of conserved energy must be considered – particularly in the case of personal heater use, which adds to electric plug loads and associated utility and CO 2 emissions cost penalties. Moreover, costs from even small changes in simulated occupant productivity tend to overwhelm energy costs, suggesting the need to improve the accuracy and precision of available productivity models across multiple seasons and climates. The use of cool materials for heat island mitigation has gained a lot of interest during the past few years. Cool materials are characterized by high solar reflectance and infrared emittance values. To maximize cooling energy savings, high albedo roof coatings should maintain the above properties for the service life of the coating. The aim of the present paper is to analyze the weatherisation of the cool roofs in two buildings in Athens Greece. The optical properties of the aged and new cool roofs are measured and compared. The impact of ageing in the two buildings’ energy performance is estimated. A mineralogical analysis is performed in order to quantify the deposition of pollutants on the cool roofs’ surface. In addition, a series of microbiological tests are implemented to reveal the impact of ageing and weatherisation in health. In both school roofs the surface temperature has a significant decrease between the part of the existing cool coating and the application of the new part with a temperature difference reached reaching 7–12 K. Since some years, dense cities and compact buildings are promoted as sustainable and energy efficient designs. Nevertheless, urban planning strategies should take into account the interactions between buildings and the microclimate because the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon can increase the cooling load of buildings and is strongly influenced by urban morphology, urban landscaping and the thermal properties of buildings and soil. The modification of these parameters, such as building density, can mitigate UHI, with direct and indirect improvement of building energy performances. The case study presented in this paper concerns a new district in La Rochelle (France) named Atlantech. Currently at the design stage, the goal is to transform this old military camp into a zero carbon district. This study was performed in parallel with urban planning using EnviBatE and SOLENE-Microclimate simulation. Two building densities are compared through the impacts on solar irradiance, wind airflows, building indoor temperatures and energy demand. Analysis of reference and densified district highlights various impacts such as the wind velocity decrease, up to 80%, and the effect on an existing nearby building solar irradiation, reduced by 7%. Occupant behavior is now widely recognized as a major contributing factor to uncertainty of building performance. While a surge of research on the topic has occurred over the past four decades, and particularly the past few years, there are many gaps in knowledge and limitations to current methodologies. This paper outlines the state-of-the-art research, current obstacles and future needs and directions for the following four-step iterative process: (1) occupant monitoring and data collection, (2) model development, (3) model evaluation, and (4) model implementation into building simulation tools. Major themes include the need for greater rigor in experimental methodologies; detailed, honest, and candid reporting of methods and results; and development of an efficient means to implement occupant behavior models and integrate them into building energy modeling programs. • A review of simulation-aided occupant-centric building design studies is presented. • Covered themes include occupant-centric metrics, models and design practices. • Most studies focus on energy-related metrics with a lack of implementation. • Metrics related to occupant comfort, wellbeing and space planning are understudied. • Improved data collection, modeling and communication methods are recommended. Occupants are active participants in their built environment, affecting its performance while simultaneously being affected by its design and indoor environmental conditions. With recent advances in computer modeling, simulation tools, and analysis techniques, topics such as human-building interactions and occupant behavior have gained significant interest in the literature given their premise of improving building design processes and operating strategies. In practice, the focus of occupant-centric literature has been mostly geared towards the latter (i.e., operation), leaving the implications on building design practices underexplored. This paper fills the gap by providing a critical review of existing studies applying computer-based modeling and simulation to guide occupant-centric building design. The reviewed papers are organized along four main themes, namely occupant-centric: (i) metrics of building performance, (ii) modeling and simulation approaches, (iii) design methods and applications, and (iv) supporting practices and mechanisms. Important barriers are identified for a more effective application of occupant-centric building design practices, including the limited consideration of metrics beyond energy efficiency (e.g., occupant well-being and space planning), the limited implementation and validation of the proposed methods, and the lack of integration of occupant behavior modeling in existing building performance simulation tools. Future research directions are discussed, covering large-scale international data collection efforts to move from generic assumptions about occupant behavior to specific/localized knowledge, improved metrics of measuring building performance, and improved industry practices, such as building codes, to promote an occupant-in-the-loop approach to the building design process. Abstract: Building energy performance simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, Ecotect, and eQuest are widely used to model energy performance of existing buildings and assess retrofit alternatives. Nevertheless, predictions from simulations typically deviate from actual measurements. Monitoring actual performance and measuring deviations from simulated data in 3D can help improve simulation accuracy through model calibrations, and in turn facilitate identification of energy performance problem. To do that, this paper presents Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling that leverages collections of unordered digital and thermal imagery, in addition to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. First, users collect large numbers of digital and thermal imagery from the building under inspection using a single thermal camera. Through an image-based reconstruction pipeline, actual 3D spatio-thermal models are automatically generated and are superimposed with expected building energy performance models generated using CFD analysis through a user-driven process. The outcomes are EPAR models which visualize actual and expected models in a common 3D environment. Within the EPAR models, actual measurements and simulated results can be systematically compared and analyzed. The method is validated on typical residential and instructional buildings. The results demonstrate that EPAR models facilitate calibration of building energy performance models and support detection and analysis of building performance deviations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, technical procedure for developing energy performance label for office buildings in Iran is presented. According to inappropriate energy consumption indexes of the office buildings in Iran, present research was conducted for this group of buildings. For this purpose, a building energy simulator software tool was developed, validated, and applied to simulate an exhaustive sample society of office buildings. A widespread field activity was conducted to gather the modeling data from 285 office buildings through all the 4 climatic zones in Iran. Moreover, Reference Buildings as the energy efficient buildings were defined and modeled in the software environment. Energy consumption indexes from modeling of sample society and Reference Buildings were applied to conclude the boundaries for grades A–G of the label. Finally, the label appearance was designed and authorized to be applied for both the existent and new buildings. The upper limit for grade A is determined as: 84, 75, 78, and 82 (kWh/Y/m2) and the upper limit of grade G (the failing point) is concluded as: 588, 525, 546, and 574 (kWh/Y/m2) for cold, mild, hot and dry, and hot and wet climatic zones, respectively. Abstract: Energy consumption of buildings depends significantly on the criteria used for the indoor environment and building design and operation. The environmental factors that define the indoor environmental quality are: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort and visual comfort. This paper approaches the numerical prediction of thermal comfort in closed spaces on the basis of PMV–PPD model, and its testing to asymmetric or nonuniform thermal radiation, as well as the indoor air quality simulation and control. The following are developed: a computation and testing model of thermal comfort in buildings, a computational model for indoor air quality numerical simulation, as well as a methodology to determine the outside airflow rate and to verify the indoor air quality in rooms, according to the European Standard CEN 1752. Also, the thermal comfort criteria for design of heating systems, the relationship between thermal environment and human performance, as well as the influence of carbon dioxide on human performance and productivity are presented. The performance of the developed computational models, implemented in two computer programs, is illustrated by using some numerical comparative applications for two building construction types. Abstract: In this paper a ray-tracing method is developed to describe the global solar transmittance of louver shading devices. The method is integrated in the dynamic building energy simulation program TRNSYS to assess the cooling demand and required peak cooling power in a south oriented office room. The proposed integrated approach allows calculating the solar transmittance for each time step. As the method is quite complex and requires an important computational effort, this research contrasts the results against the performance of simplified modeling and implementation approaches to assess the performance of louver shading devices. The use of view factor models not accounting for reflections in the shading device underestimates the cooling demand and the peak cooling power. It is shown that representing the shading device as a fixed reduction factor, independent of orientation and shading typology is an unacceptable simplification. However, the use of a simplified implementation of shading factors based on ray-tracing calculations is possible within acceptable margins of error. Best results are achieved by implementing solar radiation weighted monthly averages allowing to estimate the cooling demand and peak cooling power within 3%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An archetypal simulation model of office building representing variability in UK office building stock by parameterising built form, construction elements, occupancy/usage and operational/control strategy has been developed thus enabling detailed energy performance simulation to be used for stock modelling and parametric studies. The paper discusses the building characteristics needed to be considered for energy performance simulation, their values, and how they can be used in parametric studies. These parameters include built forms, fabrics (including thermal mass and insulation positioning), glazing percentages and characteristics, daylight and solar control measures and activity and operational related parameters (heating and cooling set points, ventilation rate, occupancy density and metabolic rate, equipment and lighting gain). The default parameter values suggested for the archetypal simulation model reflect typical existing and currently proposed UK office building stock. An archetypal model, combined with parametric studies, can be used in assessing energy performance of building stock and evaluating adaptation/retrofitting strategies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Low Carbon Futures project, funded by the Adaptation and Resilience in a Changing Climate (ARCC) Programme, has the objective of using the latest UK climate projections (UKCP’09) to assess overheating in a range of domestic and non-domestic buildings. As these climate projections are probabilistic in nature, and dynamic building simulation is being used by the project to assess building performance, the information produced is vast. To understand how to filter this data into a useable tool that can interact with current building practices, the project has commissioned a range of focus groups to obtain practitioner feedback. These focus groups provide guidance on how buildings are currently designed with respect to overheating but also how future overheating risk assessments, incorporating probabilistic climate projections, might be carried out. This paper describes the assimilation of all this research into a coherent building simulation methodology that could be used by building practitioners to assess future overheating risks of a range of buildings, and provide guidance for applying adaptation solutions to prevent defined comfort thresholds being exceeded.
