Abstract This paper tackles the issue of frost formation in air-to-air heat recovery devices dedicated to single room ventilation by means of both numerical simulations and experimental approaches. In such heat exchangers, it is commonly known that the formation of a frost layer on the surface generates an additional thermal resistance and a flow section reduction, which leads to an overall degradation of the overall unit performance. This paper proposes a three-zone model, considering a dry, a wet and a frost zone, by determining the location of moving boundaries. Each zone is handled independently and the relative proportion of each zone is determined by means of the exchanger wall temperature. Besides this frost model, a defrost model is also envisaged. Once validated with experimental data collected on a U-flow-type heat exchanger, the developed model is used to implement different strategies to reduce or prevent frost formation in the exchanger. Based on three different criteria, these strategies are compared with each other to evaluate their benefits and drawbacks. The criteria give information on the energy efficiency of the ventilation, on the air renewal quality and on the pressure balance between the inside and the outside of the building. Abstract Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are sized using design conditions, conditions that occur only a small percentage of time each year. As a result, HVAC systems frequently operate at part-load conditions since their capacity is larger than necessary except in the most extreme weather conditions. Most HVAC systems for residential and small commercial buildings in the U.S. use on/off controls, however, most energy modeling software tools do not simulate the on/off nature of this type of HVAC controls. This paper presents the development and validation of an on/off controller for residential applications in EnergyPlus using a custom EMS (energy management system). This controller is validated using minute-level field data collected for a house located in Sacramento, California with simulated occupancy and internal loads. The results obtained from EnergyPlus with and without the use of the developed on/off controller are also compared. The application of the developed on/off controller improves the HVAC energy use results accuracy around 19% in terms of the Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE) at the one-minute level compared to the results without the application of the on/off controller. It also makes the nature of operation and associated energy use signal of the HVAC system more realistic in terms of the on/off nature of the residential direct expansion coils. Furthermore, in this paper, the accuracy improvement of the results dominated by the internal loads is investigated by applying the one-minute schedule compared to the usual hourly schedules for the internal thermal loads. In order to obtain satisfactory effect of air conditioning and ventilation, the floor–supply displacement ventilation has widely applied in many civil buildings. Swirl diffusers mounted on the floor are widely used to provide fresh air into the occupied zone in the floor–supply displacement ventilation system. This paper studied the air distribution performance of swirl diffuser by 2D-PIV (particle image velocimetry). The experiment was implemented in a full-scale room to achieve reliable data of swirl diffusers. Flow visualizations have been carried out to determine the shape of the swirl jet. The whole velocity field was measured by 2D-PIV system, which is very useful to analyze air distribution above the swirl diffuser. With the aid of the flow visualizations and PIV test technology, the macro and micro structure of the air flow above the swirl diffuser is specified in more detail. Moreover, the centerline velocity decay coefficient (K value) and entrainment ratio were obtained. The research work of this paper provides detailed experimental data of air flow above the swirl diffuser, which provide the reference for selection of air terminal devices and a basis for follow-up numerical simulation study. Computer simulation for buildings has become affordable and possible in both research and industry during the last decades with rapid progress of computer industry as well as fundamental advancement of computational techniques. This paper provides an overview of such advancements achieved between 1987 and 2014, during which Professor Branko Todorovich served as Editor in Chief of Energy and Buildings Journal. The review, however, was not restricted to this journal only, in order to provide a fair snapshot on overall technique advances. Simulation and computational techniques cover a variety of aspects of building. This paper focuses specifically on six different topics including ventilation performance prediction, whole building energy and thermal load simulation, lighting and daylighting modeling, building information modeling, indoor acoustic simulation, and life cycle analysis of buildings. The requirements concerning energy performance of buildings and their internal installations, particularly HVAC systems, have been growing continuously in Poland and all over the world. The existing, traditional calculation methods following from the static heat exchange model are frequently not sufficient for a reasonable heating design of a building. Both in Poland and elsewhere in the world, methods and software are employed which allow a detailed simulation of the heating and moisture conditions in a building, and also an analysis of the performance of HVAC systems within a building. However, these systems are usually difficult in use and complex. In addition, the development of a simulation model that is sufficiently adequate to the real building requires considerable time involvement of a designer, is time-consuming and laborious (Menberg et al., 2019) [1]. A simplification of the simulation model of a building renders it possible to reduce the costs of computer simulations. The paper analyses in detail the effect of introducing a number of different variants of the simulation model developed in DesignBuilder on the quality of final results obtained. The objective of this analysis is to find simplifications which allow obtaining simulation results which have an acceptable level of deviations from the detailed model, thus facilitating a quick energy performance analysis of a given building. Fast prediction of indoor temperature distribution is valuable to recognize the status and assist in rapid decision making and heat source control. Prediction using a superposition theorem based on the assumption of fixed flow field is an alternative method of performing fast prediction. However, little research revealed the methods’ reliability based on fixed flow field, and previous prediction methods primarily focused on the temperature at a steady state. In this paper, an algebraic expression was established to predict the temperature distribution based on the definition of transient accessibility indices for temperature. The prediction accuracy was mainly verified using a numerical method with 14 cases. It was concluded: (1) the proposed expression can perform fast prediction once the transient accessibility indices are prepared in advance; (2) the fixed flow field adopted in the proposed method should be built by a thermal scenario considering the heat source at a certain intensity, rather than a scenario with no heat source. The accuracy is acceptable for positions outside the heat source area; (3) there is no significant effect of the choice of supply air temperature utilized in building the fixed flow field on prediction accuracy. Nowadays, energy simulation in many respects assists researchers and engineers in the design phase, as well as in the buildings operational phase. Reliability of the integrated simulation model and the knowledge and experience of the user are the cornerstones of good quality simulation prediction result. This study was preceded by a detailed and long-term experimental analysis of the building with a double-skin ventilated façade [10] . The paper presents results of the measurement, fine-tuning process and validation of the numerical simulation model. The simulation software tool, EnergyPlus in combination with Airflow Network Algorithm algorithm was used for the cavity air temperature and velocity prediction. When the model was verified, the criterion of eligibility were defined with the recommended statistical indicators. In order to achieve the better assessment, the validation process was done trifold: for winter, transitional and summer season. Overall, the research results highlight a very good agreement and a high level of matching between measured values and simulated results, which is a confirmation of the applied energy simulation tool. Most of the state-of-the-art building simulation programs implement models in imperative programming languages. This complicates modeling and excludes the use of certain efficient methods for simulation and optimization. In contrast, equation-based modeling languages declare relations among variables, thereby allowing the use of computer algebra to enable much simpler schematic modeling and to generate efficient code for simulation and optimization. We contrast the two approaches in this paper. We explain how such manipulations support new use cases. In the first of two examples, we couple models of the electrical grid, multiple buildings, HVAC systems and controllers to test a controller that adjusts building room temperatures and PV inverter reactive power to maintain power quality. In the second example, we contrast the computing time for solving an optimal control problem for a room-level model predictive controller with and without symbolic manipulations. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. Outdoor thermal comfort has been a widely concerned issue in tropical and subtropical cities. In order to assess the conditions of outdoor thermal comfort, quantitative information on different spatial and temporal scales is required. This paper employs a numerical model (SOLWEIG – SOlar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry) to examine the spatial and temporal variations of mean radiant temperature ( T mrt ), as an indicator of radiant heat load and outdoor heat stress in high-density sub-tropical urban environment in summer. The SOLWEIG model is found to simulate the six-directional shortwave and longwave radiation fluxes as well as T mrt very well. Simulation results show that urban geometry plays an important role in intra-urban differences in summer daytime T mrt . Open areas are generally warmer than surrounding narrow street canyons. Street canyons are sheltered from incoming direct solar radiation by shading of buildings while open areas are exposed to intense solar radiation, especially along the sunlit walls where high T mrt is observed due to reflected short-wave radiation and long-wave radiation emitted from the sunlit building walls. The present study confirms that there are great potential in using urban geometry to mitigate high radiant heat load and daytime heat stress in the compacted urban environment. In high-density subtropical cities where high daytime T mrt causes severe thermal discomfort in summer, dense urban structures are able to mitigate the extremely high T mrt and improve outdoor thermal comfort. Innovative and efficient ways to perform numerical simulations are worth investigations to reduce the computational complexity of building models and permit to solve complex problems. This paper proposes a Proper Generalised Decomposition (PGD) model reduction technique for heat and moisture multizone modelling. First, the transient multizone problem is written using PGD formalism and solved in a non-incremental way to assess hygrothermal fields. The computational complexity and accuracy of results of the reduced-order model and the large original model are compared, highlighting that the fields are precisely represented with the PGD resolution. The complexity of the reduced-order model is lower, offering interesting numerical savings, particularly when the number of the building zones increases. The second advantage of the method is for solving parametric problems. Two illustrations are proposed. The first considers a climate and ventilation flow rates parametric multizone problem. The PGD model analyse the behaviour of building zones as a function of these two extra-parameters. For the second, an initial condition and source-term PGD parametric solution is computed. It is then coupled with a wall model to perform whole-building hygrothermal simulation. Abstract: It is a challenge to estimate the ventilation rate of a natural ventilated livestock building in varied wind conditions. Both experiment and numerical simulation approaches can be applied. In this paper, numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experiments using the pressure method and tracer gas method are compared. The simulations were based on five two-equation RANS turbulence models. A building model with two different sizes of the ridge openings was investigated in a wind tunnel. Results indict the simulated overall ventilation rate through building space by standard k–ω model has the closest agreement with experiment. However, there lies a large discrepancy between simulation and experiment as the ridge opening size become larger. The discrepancy may come from shortcoming of using pressure method, especially the network method, in calculating the ventilation rate in larger ridge opening, or lack of reliable technique to measure the wind pressure at the ridge opening. As for the tracer gas method, a generally good fit was found comparing with simulation results; however, the variance still exists as the wind direction was more perpendicular to the building sidewall. Abstract: To streamline the design of the energy efficient buildings, appropriate tools are needed to assess their energy performance taking into account the microclimatic context. Numerical simulation seems to be the most suitable issue, but none tool is dedicate to the direct evaluation of the microclimate influence on the building energy consumption. A complete solution could be to use both CFD and thermoradiative simulation tools complementary with the coupling technique perspective. This paper presents both a developed CFD–thermoradiative coupled simulation tool and a typical application on an urban fragment. The results lead to two kind of observations: [•] Integration of the thermal model of a building in the microclimatic simulation platform enable a quantitative evaluation of the building energy demand regarding different urban design scenarii (e.g. mineralized vs vegetated). [•] Different physical phenomena do not contribute as much in the energy balance and it is important to compute precisely each one to obtain the small scale microclimatic influence. Abstract: Active transparent façades constitute a building envelope component that is becoming more and more common in high-rise office buildings. Many designers have opted for a ventilated façade, claiming that this technology is sustainable, reduces energy consumption and enhances indoor comfort conditions, but these claims have often proved to be wrong. From the thermofluid-dynamic analysis point of view, few design procedures or sufficiently detailed, reliable and easy to use simulation software are available for ventilated façades. A numerical model that has been developed to simulate the thermal behaviour of mechanically ventilated active transparent façades is presented in this paper. The model, developed in the Simulink/Matlab® environment, simulates the façade in both steady-state and transient conditions and provides the temperature of the different layers of the façade structure and the corresponding heat fluxes as output data. The model has been validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data obtained in the laboratory. A test has also been performed on a real façade under actual operating conditions. The model performance has resulted to be quite promising. The accuracy of the prediction of the temperature is good, while the simulations of the heat fluxes are slightly less reliable for some operative conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Mean wind pressure coefficients (C p) are key input parameters for air infiltration and ventilation studies. However, building energy simulation and stand-alone airflow network programs usually only provide and/or use a limited amount of C p data, which are based on several assumptions. An important assumption consists of using surface-averaged C p values instead of local C p values with a high resolution in space. This paper provides information on the uncertainty in the calculated airflow rate due to the use of surface-averaged C p data. The study is performed using published empirical data on pressure coefficients obtained from extensive wind tunnel experiments. The uncertainty is assessed based on the comparison of the airflow rate (ϕ) calculated using the surface-averaged C p values (ϕ AV) and the airflow rate calculated using local C p values (ϕ LOC). The results indicate that the uncertainty with a confidence interval of 95% is high: 0.23 ϕ AV < ϕ LOC <5.07 ϕ AV. In cases with the largest surface-averaged ΔC p, the underestimation or overestimation is smaller but not negligible: 0.52 ϕ AV < ϕ LOC <1.42 ϕ AV. These results provide boundaries for future improvements in C p data quality, and new developments can be evaluated by comparison with the uncertainty of the current methods. Abstract: This paper deals with the numerical three-dimensional prediction of the induced flow patterns around and inside a building, which is cross-ventilated in a natural way. The air change rate is controlled by two opposite openings on the building envelope, as a function of wind velocity and its incidence angle. The numerical methodology is based on the finite volume numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, using the CFD commercial code FLUENT. The numerical results are compared with available experimental data regarding the refresh rate of the building''s room and the relative velocity profiles at the window openings, indicating a good agreement. Furthermore, a detailed description of the natural ventilation process is provided, whilst additional information regarding the induced velocity and pressure field is presented; information which cannot be easily extrapolated by experimental methodologies. Finally, the impact of the inner topology of the building on the induced flow field is investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (ETAHE) is a low energy cooling and heating building component. It uses the ground''s thermal storage to dampen ambient air temperature oscillations by delivering the air through a horizontally buried duct. To reduce airflow resistance, some hybrid ventilated buildings have recently adopted large cross-sectional area ducts. This paper describes the development of an Artificial Neural Network based Heat Convection (ANN-HC) algorithm to predict local average Nusselt Numbers along the duct surfaces. Furthermore, the ANN-HC algorithm is integrated with a transient three-dimensional heat transfer model based on finite element analysis of heat conduction in the ground domain surrounding the ETAHE to establish a new thermal modeling method for ETAHEs. A case study is presented to demonstrate the working principle of the new method. It is shown that the method can very well simulate the interactions between an ETAHE and its environment. Abstract: The Kyoto protocol binded the developed countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at least by 5% by 2008–2012 in order to tackle global warming and climate change. Some of the measures of the governments to achieve this goal are to promote new buildings construction and to retrofit existing buildings while satisfying low energy criteria. This means improving energy efficiency of buildings and energy systems, developing sustainable building concepts and promoting renewable energy sources. The design of a low energy building requires parametric studies via simulation tools in order to optimize the design of the building envelope and HVAC systems. These studies are often complex and time consuming due to a large number of parameters to consider. Hence, this paper aims to set up a methodology that simplifies parametrical studies during the design process of a low energy building. The methodology is based on the Design of Experiments (DOE) method which is a statistical method widely used in industry to perform parametric studies that reduces the required number of experiments.
