Abstract: In this paper, an attempt has been made to validate the simulation model with experimental results of a model BIPV Trombe wall built in Izmir, Turkey. An energy analysis for determining the performance of a BIPV Trombe wall integrated to the façade of a room has been carried out. The analysis is based on transient condition. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been applied to predict the temperature and velocity distribution in the test room model. The simulations for two-dimensional model of BIPV Trombe wall system have been carried out for February 4–7th, 2008. The temperature and velocity distribution of the BIPV Trombe wall system are obtained from the simulation results. The simulation results and the measured values of surface temperatures of PV module and thermal wall; indoor, inter-space, inlet and outlet air temperatures have been compared and it is seen that they are in good agreement. The experimental results also show that 10% of solar radiation transmittance has been supplied by using a semi-transparent a-Si solar cell. Thus, thermal energy input to the system increases compared to other BIPV systems. Meanwhile, the experimental daily average electrical and thermal efficiency of this system can reach 4.52% and 27.2% respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Building energy performance simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, Ecotect, and eQuest are widely used to model energy performance of existing buildings and assess retrofit alternatives. Nevertheless, predictions from simulations typically deviate from actual measurements. Monitoring actual performance and measuring deviations from simulated data in 3D can help improve simulation accuracy through model calibrations, and in turn facilitate identification of energy performance problem. To do that, this paper presents Energy Performance Augmented Reality (EPAR) modeling that leverages collections of unordered digital and thermal imagery, in addition to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. First, users collect large numbers of digital and thermal imagery from the building under inspection using a single thermal camera. Through an image-based reconstruction pipeline, actual 3D spatio-thermal models are automatically generated and are superimposed with expected building energy performance models generated using CFD analysis through a user-driven process. The outcomes are EPAR models which visualize actual and expected models in a common 3D environment. Within the EPAR models, actual measurements and simulated results can be systematically compared and analyzed. The method is validated on typical residential and instructional buildings. The results demonstrate that EPAR models facilitate calibration of building energy performance models and support detection and analysis of building performance deviations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the tropics, daylighting from a side window requires shading to intercept direct sunlight from the window whilst allowing penetration of daylight from sky. In this paper, daylighting from a double-pane glazed window with enclosed horizontal slats (slat window) was investigated for which it is situated on either north or south wall of a room. Full-scale experiments and simulations were conducted to characterize distribution of the interior daylight from the slat window under a real tropical climate. Performance of the slat window was evaluated in terms of the “useful daylight illuminance” (UDI), interior daylight availability and light power density (LPD) of an integrated dimmable lighting system. Empirical formulas were developed for determining annual average LPD values of the dimmable lighting system over its served area. The LPD value can be used with a reduced form of the energy equation of Thailand's building energy code to evaluate the reduced annual electrical energy consumption for accreditation of the daylight use in a building. The analysis of life cycle cost proved that the daylighting from the slat window integrated with the dimmable lighting system is cost effective. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, technical procedure for developing energy performance label for office buildings in Iran is presented. According to inappropriate energy consumption indexes of the office buildings in Iran, present research was conducted for this group of buildings. For this purpose, a building energy simulator software tool was developed, validated, and applied to simulate an exhaustive sample society of office buildings. A widespread field activity was conducted to gather the modeling data from 285 office buildings through all the 4 climatic zones in Iran. Moreover, Reference Buildings as the energy efficient buildings were defined and modeled in the software environment. Energy consumption indexes from modeling of sample society and Reference Buildings were applied to conclude the boundaries for grades A–G of the label. Finally, the label appearance was designed and authorized to be applied for both the existent and new buildings. The upper limit for grade A is determined as: 84, 75, 78, and 82 (kWh/Y/m2) and the upper limit of grade G (the failing point) is concluded as: 588, 525, 546, and 574 (kWh/Y/m2) for cold, mild, hot and dry, and hot and wet climatic zones, respectively. Abstract: Energy consumption of buildings depends significantly on the criteria used for the indoor environment and building design and operation. The environmental factors that define the indoor environmental quality are: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, acoustic comfort and visual comfort. This paper approaches the numerical prediction of thermal comfort in closed spaces on the basis of PMV–PPD model, and its testing to asymmetric or nonuniform thermal radiation, as well as the indoor air quality simulation and control. The following are developed: a computation and testing model of thermal comfort in buildings, a computational model for indoor air quality numerical simulation, as well as a methodology to determine the outside airflow rate and to verify the indoor air quality in rooms, according to the European Standard CEN 1752. Also, the thermal comfort criteria for design of heating systems, the relationship between thermal environment and human performance, as well as the influence of carbon dioxide on human performance and productivity are presented. The performance of the developed computational models, implemented in two computer programs, is illustrated by using some numerical comparative applications for two building construction types. Abstract: In this paper, we outline a framework and the algorithms that will enable a home controller to accomplish occupancy-moderated multi-zone, multi-inhabitant space-conditioning under a demand-driven pricing scheme for electricity. We investigated the effects that influencing factors such as the number of zones and inhabitants, randomness of occupancy patterns and thermal mass of the residence can have on the efficacy of occupancy-moderated zonal space-conditioning (OZS) under different scenarios. Simulations driven by real data and highly realistic proxy data reveal that OZS can achieve improvements averaging 23% over the case without under certain settings. Our investigations also revealed that a house with heavier thermal mass stands to gain as much as 15% from OZS with pre-conditioning than a lighter one. We further offer a few pointers on reducing the cost of space-conditioning using OZS under a demand-driven pricing scheme to the average homeowner based on our findings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: When a wind flow approaches a building, a recirculation zone is created on the leeward side of the building. This turbulent zone behind the building increases the air mixing at the leeward openings between entering and leaving air. As a consequence the effective temperature difference is reduced at the opening, counteracting the stack effect. Therefore, the air change rate is lower than that in absence of wind. Some empirical correlations have been set up to assess the airflow rate due to the combination of stack and wind effects. However these correlations do not take into account the reduction of airflow rate in leeward conditions. This paper aims to improve the existing correlations and in particular to confront the issue related to leeward openings. The study is based on CFD simulations and full scale experiments. A comparison of Warren''s correlation with CFD and experimental results shows that this correlation captures well the stack and wind effects in windward conditions but shows poor results in leeward conditions. Thus, a new correlation has been developed by using CFD simulations in leeward conditions. The new correlation is then compared with the full-scale experiments and concords well. Abstract: In this paper a ray-tracing method is developed to describe the global solar transmittance of louver shading devices. The method is integrated in the dynamic building energy simulation program TRNSYS to assess the cooling demand and required peak cooling power in a south oriented office room. The proposed integrated approach allows calculating the solar transmittance for each time step. As the method is quite complex and requires an important computational effort, this research contrasts the results against the performance of simplified modeling and implementation approaches to assess the performance of louver shading devices. The use of view factor models not accounting for reflections in the shading device underestimates the cooling demand and the peak cooling power. It is shown that representing the shading device as a fixed reduction factor, independent of orientation and shading typology is an unacceptable simplification. However, the use of a simplified implementation of shading factors based on ray-tracing calculations is possible within acceptable margins of error. Best results are achieved by implementing solar radiation weighted monthly averages allowing to estimate the cooling demand and peak cooling power within 3%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An archetypal simulation model of office building representing variability in UK office building stock by parameterising built form, construction elements, occupancy/usage and operational/control strategy has been developed thus enabling detailed energy performance simulation to be used for stock modelling and parametric studies. The paper discusses the building characteristics needed to be considered for energy performance simulation, their values, and how they can be used in parametric studies. These parameters include built forms, fabrics (including thermal mass and insulation positioning), glazing percentages and characteristics, daylight and solar control measures and activity and operational related parameters (heating and cooling set points, ventilation rate, occupancy density and metabolic rate, equipment and lighting gain). The default parameter values suggested for the archetypal simulation model reflect typical existing and currently proposed UK office building stock. An archetypal model, combined with parametric studies, can be used in assessing energy performance of building stock and evaluating adaptation/retrofitting strategies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Thirty percent of the total worldwide energy is consumed by the residential sector, making it a very significant frontier for energy transitions for sustainability. While the Netherlands aims to achieve a remarkable reduction in the energy consumption in residential buildings with policies mainly aiming at new constructions; little attention is being paid to the existing stock, and this existing stock creates inertia against a transition. Although this is a widely accepted issue, the extent of such inertia has not been analyzed explicitly. In that respect, this study is a preliminary study that aims to demonstrate the importance of the existing housing stock, and the inertia it can cause against an energy transition. Besides, policy options such as increasing efficiency standards for new constructions and increasing the turnover rate of the existing stock are evaluated through simulation experiments using the model developed for the Dutch system. The set of experiments discussed in the paper provides a better understanding about this inertia, as well as what needs to be done for achieving significant progress in a residential energy transition. Abstract: Inhabitant''s decisions and actions have a strong impact on the energy consumption and are an important factor in reducing energy consumption and in modeling future energy trends. Energy simulations that take into account inhabitants’ behaviour are benchmarked at office buildings using controlled activity profiles and predefined scenarios. In this paper we have proposed a co-simulation environment for energy smart homes that takes into account inhabitants’ dynamic and social behaviour. Based on this kind of complex behaviour, the setpoints for different controllers are adjusted in the physical simulator. In this platform, human behaviour is modeled using the Brahms environment and the thermal model and controllers for different appliances are modeled as a physical simulator. The thermal model computes the temperature decrease/increase in a room based on the contextual information resulting from the behaviour simulator. Abstract: The building sector is an energy intensive sector, with great potential to reduce energy needs and environmental pollution. Several measures are being taken to increase the energy efficiency and avoid energy consumption in this sector. A recent trend is the nearly zero energy buildings, which was already adopted by some of the latest regulations, such as the 2010 recast of the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). However, to reach these goals, especially considering the existing building stock, new retrofit solutions are required, which must be well adapted to the specific building stock needs, and ensure that the building retrofit can achieve the nearly zero energy buildings standards. This paper presents a new prefabricated retrofit module solution for the facades of existing buildings, and also the steps taken to optimise its performance, which includes a judicious choice of materials, 3D modelling, cost–benefit analysis, use of different simulation tools for performance optimisation and prototyping. It is also shown the implementation of the retrofit module within an integrated retrofit approach, whose final goal was to obtain a building with the minimum possible energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract: This paper reports on a recently developed numerical simulation method (NGRFs, numerical generation of response factors method) for the prediction of earth-contact domain temperatures under multi zone structures. It will be studied the way that a typical multi-room slab-on-ground floor influences soil''s and other underground components’ temperature with time and depth. Abstract: It is a challenge to estimate the ventilation rate of a natural ventilated livestock building in varied wind conditions. Both experiment and numerical simulation approaches can be applied. In this paper, numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experiments using the pressure method and tracer gas method are compared. The simulations were based on five two-equation RANS turbulence models. A building model with two different sizes of the ridge openings was investigated in a wind tunnel. Results indict the simulated overall ventilation rate through building space by standard k–ω model has the closest agreement with experiment. However, there lies a large discrepancy between simulation and experiment as the ridge opening size become larger. The discrepancy may come from shortcoming of using pressure method, especially the network method, in calculating the ventilation rate in larger ridge opening, or lack of reliable technique to measure the wind pressure at the ridge opening. As for the tracer gas method, a generally good fit was found comparing with simulation results; however, the variance still exists as the wind direction was more perpendicular to the building sidewall. Abstract: The Low Carbon Futures project, funded by the Adaptation and Resilience in a Changing Climate (ARCC) Programme, has the objective of using the latest UK climate projections (UKCP’09) to assess overheating in a range of domestic and non-domestic buildings. As these climate projections are probabilistic in nature, and dynamic building simulation is being used by the project to assess building performance, the information produced is vast. To understand how to filter this data into a useable tool that can interact with current building practices, the project has commissioned a range of focus groups to obtain practitioner feedback. These focus groups provide guidance on how buildings are currently designed with respect to overheating but also how future overheating risk assessments, incorporating probabilistic climate projections, might be carried out. This paper describes the assimilation of all this research into a coherent building simulation methodology that could be used by building practitioners to assess future overheating risks of a range of buildings, and provide guidance for applying adaptation solutions to prevent defined comfort thresholds being exceeded. Abstract: Computational models of heat and moisture transport are frequently used in calculating energy gains and losses in buildings. However, any model can provide reliable information only in the case that the quality of input data is adequate. This is not always true because the standard lists of thermal and hygric parameters given by the producers as well as the material databases included in the simulation tools are usually far from complete. In this paper, we present the measurements of complete sets of heat and moisture transport and storage parameters of selected thermal insulation materials in dependence on moisture content. Two common thermal insulation materials, namely hydrophobic mineral wool and expanded polystyrene, are selected as reference materials. Two types of hydrophilic mineral wool and an autoclaved-aerated-concrete thermal insulation board are the representatives of prospective materials which appeared on the market within the last couple of years. The studied material parameters include bulk density, matrix density, porosity, saturation moisture content, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, moisture diffusivity, water vapor diffusion coefficient, sorption isotherm, and water retention curve. Abstract: Experimental and theoretical analyses have been performed to determine dynamic thermal characteristics of fiber insulations containing microencapsulated phase change material (PCM). It was followed by a series of transient computer simulations to investigate the performance of a wood-framed wall assembly with PCM-enhanced fiber insulation in different climatic conditions. A novel lab-scale testing procedure with use of the heat flow meter apparatus (HFMA) was introduced in 2009 for the analysis of dynamic thermal characteristics of PCM-enhanced materials. Today, test data on these characteristics is necessary for whole-building simulations, energy analysis, and energy code work. The transient characteristics of PCM-enhanced products depend on the PCM content and a quality of the PCM carrier. In the past, the only existing readily-available method of thermal evaluation of PCMs utilized the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) methodology. Unfortunately, this method required small and relatively uniform test specimens. This requirement is unrealistic in the case of many PCM-enhanced building envelope products. Small specimens are not representative of PCM-based blends, since these materials are not homogeneous. In this paper, dynamic thermal properties of materials, in which phase change processes occur, are analyzed based on a recently-upgraded dynamic experimental procedure: using the conventional HFMA. In order to theoretically analyze performance of these materials, an integral formula for the total heat flow in finite time interval, across the surface of a wall containing the phase change material, was derived. In numerical analysis of the southern-oriented wall the Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) weather data was used for the summer hot period between June 30th and July 3rd. In these simulations the following three climatic locations were used: Warsaw, Poland, Marseille, France, and Cairo, Egypt. It was found that for internal temperature of 24°C, peak-hour heat gains were reduced by 23–37% for Marseille and 21–25% for Cairo; similar effects were observed for Warsaw. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Many parameters have been used to evaluate the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs, most of them for air-conditioned buildings. In this paper, the interest is focused on parameters to assess the thermal performance of envelope wall/roofs for non air-conditioned buildings. Five groups of parameters, some previously used and some newly proposed, have been analyzed. To test the evaluation parameters, numerical simulations of the periodic heat transfer through five different roof configurations have been carried out. This research shows the suitability of the energy transferred through the wall/roof during a day, the decrement factor, the discomfort degree hours, and the hot (or cold) thermal performance index to be used for thermal evaluation of wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. The sensitivity of these parameters with climatic conditions and with the outdoor surface solar absorptance is analyzed. Additionally, it has been shown that the steady-state thermal transmittance, the thermal admittance modulus, the periodic thermal transmittance modulus, and the surface decrement factor, calculated with surface temperatures, are not suitable parameters to evaluate wall/roofs in non air-conditioned buildings. Abstract: Thermal mass combined with other passive strategies can play an important role in buildings energy efficiency, minimizing the need of space-conditioning mechanical systems. However, the use of lightweight materials with low thermal mass is becoming increasingly common. Phase Change Materials (PCMs) can add thermal energy storage benefits to lightweight constructions. There are many studies about the use of PCM in buildings, but there are still some difficulties for effective use and practical application of these materials. The study of applications used in real buildings could help us find solutions to these difficulties. This paper analyzed different PCM applications presented in highly efficient lightweight construction houses that have participated in the American Solar Decathlon, an international competition organized by U.S. Department of Energy. These houses have been tested and monitored in Washington DC, place with suitable climate conditions for short term thermal storage systems. The study started with a classification of the PCM applications and included an analysis of the systems, materials, switching temperatures, containments and design strategies used to improve the houses energy performance. Also, it included results of numerical simulations and experimentation that the participant team had done, complemented with information available in the literature about similar materials or applications. Abstract: Presently the essential research trend for sustainable buildings is the use of renewable energy sources and the development of new techniques of energy storage. Phase change materials (PCMs) may store latent heat energy in addition to the typical sensible energy capacity of current building materials, allowing to store significantly more energy during the phase change process (solid to liquid and vice versa). The incorporation of PCMs into building envelope solutions takes advantage of solar energy, contributing to the overall reduction of energy consumption associated to use of the air conditioning systems. This paper presents and discusses research developed in two main components: experimental testing and numerical simulation of a building component with PCM incorporation. The main goal of the experimental testing carried out was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of PCM macro encapsulated into a typical Portuguese clay brick masonry enclosure wall. It is evaluated the influence of the phase change process of the PCM over the attenuation and time delay of the temperature fluctuations for indoor spaces. The experimental results allowed the calibration and validation of the numerical model, enabling to carry out parametric studies with different PCMs quantity analysing consequent temperature damping and time delay. Abstract: This paper describes field experiments and numerical simulations on hybrid utilization of renewable energy and fuel cells for a residential energy system. It presents results of empirical testing and evaluation of hybrid utilization involving solar energy. First, field experiments were conducted on an electric power and domestic hot water supply system that uses both solar energy and fuel cells. The system achieved a large amount of reduction in primary energy consumption compared with conventional systems. Secondly, a simulation was performed on the optimum scale and effect of introduction of the system. The simulation results proposed the optimum capacities of the solar energy utilization and fuel cells to minimize primary energy consumption of the system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: It becomes popular to use computer simulation technique to evaluate the performance of energy utilizations in buildings. The hourly weather data as simulation input is a crucial factor for the successful energy system simulation, and obtaining an accurate set of weather data is necessary to represent the long-term typical weather conditions throughout a year. This paper introduces a stochastic approach, which is called the first order multivariate Markov chain model, to generate the annual weather data for better evaluating and sizing different energy systems. The process for generating the weather data time series from the multivariate Markov transition probability matrices is described using 15-years actual hourly weather data of Hong Kong. The ability of this new model for retaining the statistical properties of the generated weather data series is examined and compared with the current existing TMY and TRY data. The main statistical properties used for this purpose are mean value, standard deviation, maximum value, minimum value, frequency distribution probability and persistency probability of the weather data sequence. The comparison between the observed weather data and the synthetically generated ones shows that the statistical characteristics of the developed set of weather data are satisfactorily preserved and the developed set of weather data can predict and evaluate different energy systems more accurately. Abstract: This paper introduces a solar-assisted ground-coupled heat pump (SAGCHP) system with heat storage for space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) supply. The simulation results of the system''s detailed operating performance are presented. The optimization of the system design is carried out by the TRNSYS and a numerical simulation is performed for continuous operation of 20 years under the meteorological conditions of Beijing. Different control strategies are considered and the operational characteristics of each working mode are studied. The simulating results show that the long term yearly average space heating efficiency is improved by 26.3% compared to a traditional ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) system because the solar thermal collecting system is used to elevate the thermal energy in the soil and to provide direct space heating with heat storage. At the same time, the underground heat load imbalance problem for a heating load dominated GCHP is solved by soil recharging during non-heating periods, while extra solar energy is utilized to supply DHW. The flexibility and high efficiency of the SAGCHP system could offer an alternative for space heating and DHW supply by heat pump technology and solar energy in cold winters of northern China. Abstract: To streamline the design of the energy efficient buildings, appropriate tools are needed to assess their energy performance taking into account the microclimatic context. Numerical simulation seems to be the most suitable issue, but none tool is dedicate to the direct evaluation of the microclimate influence on the building energy consumption. A complete solution could be to use both CFD and thermoradiative simulation tools complementary with the coupling technique perspective. This paper presents both a developed CFD–thermoradiative coupled simulation tool and a typical application on an urban fragment. The results lead to two kind of observations: [•] Integration of the thermal model of a building in the microclimatic simulation platform enable a quantitative evaluation of the building energy demand regarding different urban design scenarii (e.g. mineralized vs vegetated). [•] Different physical phenomena do not contribute as much in the energy balance and it is important to compute precisely each one to obtain the small scale microclimatic influence. Abstract: Efforts have been devoted to the identification of the impacts of occupant behavior on building energy consumption. Various factors influence building energy consumption at the same time, leading to the lack of precision when identifying the individual effects of occupant behavior. This paper reports the development of a new methodology for examining the influences of occupant behavior on building energy consumption; the method is based on a basic data mining technique (cluster analysis). To deal with data inconsistencies, min–max normalization is performed as a data preprocessing step before clustering. Grey relational grades, a measure of relevancy between two factors, are used as weighted coefficients of different attributes in cluster analysis. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method, the method was applied to a set of residential buildings’ measurement data. The results show that the method facilitates the evaluation of building energy-saving potential by improving the behavior of building occupants, and provides multifaceted insights into building energy end-use patterns associated with the occupant behavior. The results obtained could help prioritize efforts at modification of occupant behavior in order to reduce building energy consumption, and help improve modeling of occupant behavior in numerical simulation. Abstract: Ground coupled heat pump systems can offer high energy efficiency for heating and cooling of buildings. The coupling of the ground loop with system and building represents a complex system and system performances can vary over long periods, in the range of 10–15 years due to the charge or discharge of the ground loop. In order to correctly concept, size and optimise these systems, numerical simulation is a perfect tool. The assessment of the global performance of such systems through simulation relies on several parameters, from the physical model validity to the operating conditions and control of the system. Typically, a GCHP system is simulated with a 1-h step. Transient phenomena inside the borehole are often neglected since ground models are mainly developed to characterise long term phenomena. However, detailed system simulations considering a realistic control of the system require much smaller time steps. In these cases, the validity of simulation models has to be verified. This paper proposes a hybrid approach combining experiments and simulation to highlight and quantify the impact of borehole short-time response on the system efficiency and system operation. First, a comparison between steady state and transient models as well as measurement is carried out. It reveals significant influence of dynamic effects inside the borehole. Abstract: Natural ventilation, which is in line with the concepts of sustainability and green energy, is widely acknowledged nowadays. Prevailing winds in urban areas are unavoidably modified by the increasing number of closely placed high-rise buildings that significantly modify the natural ventilation behaviour. This paper explores the effects of building interference on natural ventilation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The cross-ventilation rate (temporal-average volumetric airflow rate) of hypothetical apartments in a building cluster under isothermal conditions was examined using the standard two-equation k − ɛ turbulence model. The sensitivity of ventilation rate to wind direction, building separation and building disposition (building shift) was studied. Placing buildings farther away from one another substantially promoted the ventilation rate, cancelling the unfavourable interference eventually when the building separation was about five times the building width (the optimum separation). The characteristic flow pattern leading to this behaviour was revealed. With the adoption of building disposition, the optimum separation could be reduced to three times the building width. In addition, the airflow rates could be doubled with suitable shifts. Abstract: Active transparent façades constitute a building envelope component that is becoming more and more common in high-rise office buildings. Many designers have opted for a ventilated façade, claiming that this technology is sustainable, reduces energy consumption and enhances indoor comfort conditions, but these claims have often proved to be wrong. From the thermofluid-dynamic analysis point of view, few design procedures or sufficiently detailed, reliable and easy to use simulation software are available for ventilated façades. A numerical model that has been developed to simulate the thermal behaviour of mechanically ventilated active transparent façades is presented in this paper. The model, developed in the Simulink/Matlab® environment, simulates the façade in both steady-state and transient conditions and provides the temperature of the different layers of the façade structure and the corresponding heat fluxes as output data. The model has been validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data obtained in the laboratory. A test has also been performed on a real façade under actual operating conditions. The model performance has resulted to be quite promising. Abstract: The frequency of adjustments to the supply temperature set-point in district heating networks influences the overall operating cost in two ways: adaptability to changes in network conditions; and availability of time for determining an appropriate response. In this paper we investigate this trade-off and show that operating costs can be reduced through appropriate control period selection. Eleven hypothetical scenarios spanning five different networks have been simulated under a variety of control policies. Abstract: This paper explores the potential of reducing the annual energy consumption of a central air-conditioned building through advanced evaporative cooling systems. The building considered is a typical three floor library building of a University. The regenerative evaporative cooling technology is coupled with the liquid cooled water chiller system to accomplish the energy conservation objective. Comparisons of the regenerative evaporative cooling are made with simple evaporative cooling to bring out the importance such a system. The well-known building simulation software, TRNSYS is used to carry out the heat load calculations and the dynamic simulations of the building. Annual energy consumptions of different components of the air-conditioning system are estimated for the existing water chiller system as well as for both coupled evaporative cooling systems (simple and regenerative). The annual energy consumptions, the indoor temperature, the relative humidity and the thermal comfort index ‘PMV’ are compared for all the three different air-conditioning systems. The coupling of direct and regenerative evaporative cooling technologies with water chiller system has shown, respectively, 12.09% and 15.69% savings in annual energy consumption of the building, while maintaining PMV between −1 and +1 for most of the hours in the year. Abstract: The importance of calculating the effect of thermal bridges in building energy demand is growing. This is because new energy saving regulations are being applied in different countries making builders to increase the level of insulation in homes, and therefore raising the percentage of thermal bridges in total heat loss. This paper makes an introduction to the problem that implies correctly calculating the heat transfer through thermal bridges within the programs to calculate the building energy demand considering their inertia. Abstract: This paper identifies the impact of thermostat strategies on heating and cooling energy consumptions in buildings, thus suggesting the importance of a database for understanding the effect of thermostat settings and for deciding energy-conscious strategies. Using computer simulation, diverse thermostat strategies – change of setback period, change of set-point temperature, and change of setback temperature – were tested parametrically in a typical USA single-family homes, located in two climate zones, namely cold (Detroit, Michigan) and hot-humid (Miami, Florida). Analysis revealed that heating and cooling systems were significant energy-consuming components in each climate zone. Accordingly, heating energy in cold climate zones and cooling energy in hot-humid climate zones have potential for matchingly significant saving. Diverse thermostat strategies (changes of setback period, of set-point, of setback temperature) demonstrated their obvious impacts on such saving. In the cold climate in particular, the heating system showed the most significant energy-saving effect via proper thermostat strategies. Abstract: The present paper deals with the thermal study of honeycomb panels for short-term heat storage. Using honeycomb panels filled with Phase Change Materials (PCMs) allowed us to fulfil two criteria: enhancement of thermal conductivity and containment to avoid possible leaks. Paraffin whose thermal properties have been measured has been chosen as PCM. The response of the PCM panel to temperature variations was studied with a specific test bench. Temperature and flux measurements clearly showed a significant thermal inertia increase compared to samples filled with air and water. Abstract: A glazed gallery in most old buildings is a space located on the first floor (and/or higher floors), facing south and almost fully glazed. As a result of the large glazed area and the orientation of the gallery, its temperature is warmer than the exterior and, in cold weather, it is used both as a space to insulate the adjacent rooms and as a leisure area, among other applications. In the framework of the ARFRISOL project (Bioclimatic Architecture and Solar Cooling), a demonstration container has been constructed in northern Spain (Asturias) which includes, among other bioclimatic elements, a glazed gallery. This gallery is considered as an element of Bioclimatic Architecture that enables solar radiation to be collected and the energy obtained to be used to support the building''s air conditioning system. It consists of a south-facing glazed exterior wall, an intermediate space or passage and a partially glazed interior wall. Dampers located in the floor and ceiling of the intermediate space and connected to the air ducts enable the air circulating inside the gallery to be heated or cooled, depending on the season of the year, before it is further conditioned and conveyed to the rooms. This paper focuses on the three-dimensional numerical simulation of the airflow inside the gallery. Abstract: A traditional Chinese heating system, the Chinese Kang, is used by 175 million people in detached houses in the rural regions of China, especially in Northeast China. This system utilizes biomass such as corn stalks, straw, corncob and energy plants as the heat sources. The objective of this paper is to establish a set of models to simulate the energy performance of the Kang heating system in one Chinese detached house. An experimental field study was carried out to collect practical parameters in a newly constructed Chinese detached house. The dynamic performance of the Kang heating system was simulated by using IDA-ICE 4.0 embedded with an empirical model built in the field study. The results show that the simulation can obtain good overall agreement with the field measurement results. It was confirmed that the Kang model created by IDA-ICE 4.0 is capable of simulating the performance of the Kang system and of calculating energy consumption in the detached house. Moreover, the result reveals that the thermal environment in the present Chinese detached house is still poor during the severe cold season if only the Kang system is used to heat the whole house. Abstract: The evaluation of building energy consumption usually requires building energy profiles on an hourly basis. Computer simulations can be used to obtain this information but generating simulations requires a significant amount of experience, time, and effort to enter detailed building parameters. This paper presents a simple methodology to estimate hourly electrical and fuel energy consumption of a building by applying a series of predetermined coefficients to the monthly energy consumption data from electrical and fuel utility bills. The advantage of having predetermined coefficients is that it relieves the user from the burden of performing a detailed dynamic simulation of the building. The coefficients provided to the user are obtained by running EnergyPlus Benchmark Models simulations; thus, the simulation process is transparent to the user. The methodology has been applied to a hypothetical building placed both in Atlanta, GA, and in Meridian, MS, and in both cases, errors obtained for the estimated hourly energy consumption are mainly within 10%. Abstract: This paper describes the results of experimental tests and computer simulation modelling aimed at evaluating the performance of an electrochromic (EC) window with respect to solar control in buildings. The research is carried out by a test-cell equipped with a small area EC double glazing unit (EC-DGU) where one pane consists of an EC device and the other of a clear glass. The performance of the device on global light transmittance control, internal temperature control and solar heat gain control, is investigated in summer-time under real sky conditions as a function of time, test-cell orientation and switching strategies (static and dynamic). Both experiments and numerical analysis show that the decrease of the heat load affecting the test-cell, normalized respect to a clear float glass, is maximum when the EC-DGU is set to its lowest transmitting state and amounts to about 50% for west orientation and about 60% for south orientation. Abstract: This paper describes the analysis of the hygrothermal behaviours of stabilised rammed earth (SRE) walls used in a building in the UK. The analysis was achieved by computer simulation using WUFI Plus v1.2 whole building hygrothermal analysis software. To validate the model, an unoccupied test room in an unheated SRE building was monitored for 10 months. The hygrothermal properties of the SRE material were measured in the laboratory. It is shown that the SRE walls significantly reduced the amplitude of relative humidity fluctuations in the room air and reduced the frequency of high humidity periods at the wall surface. By adapting the model to represent an occupied and conditioned space, it is demonstrated that SRE walls have the potential to reduce the energy demand for humidification/dehumidification plant. Abstract: Mean wind pressure coefficients (C p) are key input parameters for air infiltration and ventilation studies. However, building energy simulation and stand-alone airflow network programs usually only provide and/or use a limited amount of C p data, which are based on several assumptions. An important assumption consists of using surface-averaged C p values instead of local C p values with a high resolution in space. This paper provides information on the uncertainty in the calculated airflow rate due to the use of surface-averaged C p data. The study is performed using published empirical data on pressure coefficients obtained from extensive wind tunnel experiments. The uncertainty is assessed based on the comparison of the airflow rate (ϕ) calculated using the surface-averaged C p values (ϕ AV) and the airflow rate calculated using local C p values (ϕ LOC). The results indicate that the uncertainty with a confidence interval of 95% is high: 0.23 ϕ AV < ϕ LOC <5.07 ϕ AV. In cases with the largest surface-averaged ΔC p, the underestimation or overestimation is smaller but not negligible: 0.52 ϕ AV < ϕ LOC <1.42 ϕ AV. These results provide boundaries for future improvements in C p data quality, and new developments can be evaluated by comparison with the uncertainty of the current methods. Abstract: In the last few years, thermal comfort research in summer has significantly increased the electricity consumption in buildings. This is mainly due to the use of conventional air conditioning systems operating with mechanical vapor compression. Solar cooling systems appear to be an interesting solution to solve this problem. But the understanding of this technology has to be refined through fundamental studies by developing numerical simulations. Moreover, the study of pilot plants is a practical method to gain experience by analyzing all the processes behind solar cooling technology. This paper presents an experimental study of a solar cooling absorption system implemented in Reunion Island, located in the southern hemisphere near the Capricorn Tropic. The particularity of this project is to achieve an effective cooling of classrooms, by a solar cooling system without any backup systems (hot or cold). The aim of this experimental study is to define the limits of the use of such system under tropical climate conditions without setting a set point temperature. Indoor thermal comfort is achieved by a self-stabilizing operating system that maintains the indoor temperature 6°C below the outdoor temperature. During some critical periods of the year, when the outdoor temperature is very high and when the solar cooling system cannot provide enough refrigerating production, thermal comfort inside the building is achieved by using ceiling fans. Abstract: An adaptive approach to control a water valve for a cooling coil, called an adaptive fuzzy logic controller (AFLC), is developed and validated in this study. The AFLC calculates the error between the supply air temperature and the supply air temperature set point for air in an air handling unit (AHU) of a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and continues to improve the fuzzy controller parameters to minimize the error. The AFLC uses genetic algorithms (GAs) to improve the fuzzy rule matrix and fuzzy membership functions for the AHU in HVAC systems. In this paper, the application of genetic algorithms for developing the AFLC is presented. After a brief background on fuzzy logic controllers and GA theory, the use of GAs is explained. Three methods of modifying the fuzzy rule matrix using the GAs are presented along with simulation and real-time experimental results. Abstract: Enhancing load calculation tools into building simulation programs requires an in-depth revision and fine tuning of the load calculation assumptions prior to the addition of the HVAC system modelling routines. It is of special interest the analysis of transient heat conduction through multi-layer walls where, in order to improve the coupling between the passive elements of the building and the HVAC systems, an improvement of the time resolution in the calculation becomes critical. Several methods have been historically used, although recently Laplace''s method has been displaced by the State Space method. This paper proposes a new strategy for fine time resolution on the calculation of the response factors through Laplace''s method considering a comparison with the performance of the State Space method when used to calculate conduction transfer functions. Abstract: This paper deals with the numerical three-dimensional prediction of the induced flow patterns around and inside a building, which is cross-ventilated in a natural way. The air change rate is controlled by two opposite openings on the building envelope, as a function of wind velocity and its incidence angle. The numerical methodology is based on the finite volume numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, using the CFD commercial code FLUENT. The numerical results are compared with available experimental data regarding the refresh rate of the building''s room and the relative velocity profiles at the window openings, indicating a good agreement. Furthermore, a detailed description of the natural ventilation process is provided, whilst additional information regarding the induced velocity and pressure field is presented; information which cannot be easily extrapolated by experimental methodologies. Abstract: An Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (ETAHE) is a low energy cooling and heating building component. It uses the ground''s thermal storage to dampen ambient air temperature oscillations by delivering the air through a horizontally buried duct. To reduce airflow resistance, some hybrid ventilated buildings have recently adopted large cross-sectional area ducts. This paper describes the development of an Artificial Neural Network based Heat Convection (ANN-HC) algorithm to predict local average Nusselt Numbers along the duct surfaces. Furthermore, the ANN-HC algorithm is integrated with a transient three-dimensional heat transfer model based on finite element analysis of heat conduction in the ground domain surrounding the ETAHE to establish a new thermal modeling method for ETAHEs. A case study is presented to demonstrate the working principle of the new method. It is shown that the method can very well simulate the interactions between an ETAHE and its environment. Abstract: This paper presents the experimental study and numerical simulation of a semi-indirect evaporative cooler (SIEC), which acts as an energy recovery device in air conditioning systems. The numerical simulation was conducted by applying the CFD software FLUENT implementing a UDF to model evaporation/condensation. The numerical model was validated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data. Abstract: The Kyoto protocol binded the developed countries to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions at least by 5% by 2008–2012 in order to tackle global warming and climate change. Some of the measures of the governments to achieve this goal are to promote new buildings construction and to retrofit existing buildings while satisfying low energy criteria. This means improving energy efficiency of buildings and energy systems, developing sustainable building concepts and promoting renewable energy sources. The design of a low energy building requires parametric studies via simulation tools in order to optimize the design of the building envelope and HVAC systems. These studies are often complex and time consuming due to a large number of parameters to consider. Hence, this paper aims to set up a methodology that simplifies parametrical studies during the design process of a low energy building. Abstract: In this paper we compare our estimate of energy consumption for domestic hot water production in a building with the measured value. The energy consumption for hot water production is estimated from the measured total power consumption. The estimation method was developed using computer simulations, and it is based on the assumption that hot water production causes rapid and detectable changes in power consumption. A comparison of our estimates with measurements indicates that the uncertainty in estimation of hot water energy consumption is ±10%. Abstract: The dome-covered house is an example of designing buildings by learning from the optimized biological forms from the nature in order to reduce the energy use for heating in cold climates. This paper presents the three-dimensional thermal and airflow (3D-TAF) model that predicts the impact of such dome on the heating load of the protected house. The emphasis is on the airflow model, the formulation of the system of equations, the calculation procedure, and the comparison with a CFD model. A case study of a dome located in Montreal (Canada) is presented. Abstract: This paper briefly reviews the primary parameters for a double skin façade (DSF) design. The research presents an integrated and iterative modeling process for analyzing the thermal performance of DSF cavities with buoyancy-driven airflow by using a building energy simulation program (BESP) along with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package. A typical DSF cavity model has been established and simulated. The model and the modeling process have been calibrated and validated against the experimental data. The validated model was used to develop correlations that can be implemented in a BESP, allowing users to take advantage of the accuracy gained from CFD simulations without the required computation time. Correlations were developed for airflow rate through cavity, average and peak cavity air temperature, cavity air pressure, and interior convection coefficient.
