Current indoor thermal environment is usually automatically controlled based on a temperature set-point given by room occupants or building managers. However, investigation shows that many temperature set-points are far from the comfortable temperature range recommended by design handbooks. Such unreasonable temperature set-points will result in not only uncomfortable indoor thermal environment, but also waste of cooling or heating energy. The authors have proposed a methodology of satisfaction based control to take place of the traditional set-point based control. This paper describes the experimental comparison results between satisfaction based indoor thermal environment control and set-point based control. Two test-beds were set up and a series of experiments was conducted to compare control performances, user acceptances, user work performances and system energy consumptions of the set-point based and satisfaction based control. The comparison results show that the satisfaction based control can achieve more stable thermal environment. Both of the two control methods can get relatively high scores regarding user acceptance and work performance. There are no statistically significant differences for user acceptance and work performance between two control methods. However, satisfaction based control consumed 15.3% and 11.9% less energy at two test-beds respectively than set-point based control due to more reasonable temperature settings given by the satisfaction based control. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a computational study on the energy consumption and related CO2 emissions for heating and cooling of an office building within the Urban Heat Island of London, currently and in the future. The study developed twenty weather files in an East-West axis through London; the weather files were constructed according to future climate change scenario for 2050 suitable for the UK which have been modified to represent specific locations within the London UHI based on measurements and predictions from a program developed for this purpose (LSSAT). The study simulated an office with typical construction, heat gains and operational patterns with an advanced thermal simulation program (IESVE). The predictions confirm that heating load decreases, cooling load and overheating hours increase as the office location moves from rural to urban sites and from present to future years. It is shown that internal heat gains are an important factor affecting energy performance and that night cooling using natural ventilation will have a beneficial effect at rural and city locations. As overheating will increase in the future, more buildings will use cooling; it is shown that this might lead to a five-fold increase of CO2 emission for city centre offices in London in 2050. The paper presents detailed results of the typical office placed on the East-West axis of the city, arguing the necessity to consider using weather files based on climate projections and urban heat island for the design of current buildings to safeguard their efficiency in the future. • A new methodology to investigate the impact of thermal mass is defined. • The use of unrepresentative boundary conditions could lead to inaccurate conclusions. • High thermal mass helps to decrease and regulate the internal temperature. • High thermal mass could increase energy use in the summer and winter seasons. • Isolating thermal mass through internal insulation results in better energy performance than external insulation. Contradictory conclusions have been reported on whether thermal mass reduces or increases energy demand in hot and cold climates. A novel approach to measuring the impact of thermal mass on the building's energy consumption is presented. The method aims to better represent reality and applies two different control conditions simultaneously in a numerical model: the first condition, which has been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on the time duration of heating/cooling activation (simulating an occupancy pattern) and the second, which has not been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on both the time duration and the internal temperature (simulating an occupancy pattern and the thermostatic control system). When investigating the impact of thermal mass on the internal temperature in a scenario where no heat is transferred into the building, the high thermal mass outperforms the low thermal mass, showing a time-shifting effect, long time lag, and small decrement factor. However, when modelled using the method presented in this paper, high thermal mass results in greater energy consumption during summer and winter periods in Saudi Arabia. During transition seasons where temperature swings occur on either side of the indoor set-point temperatures, thermal mass reduces thermal transmission. The impact of thermal mass is also investigated for several climatic conditions in Saudi Arabia. Simulation results show that an internally exposed thermal massive wall section results in greater energy consumption when compared to a similar building with isolated thermal mass (i.e. insulated internally). This is due to the fact that even though the internal temperature inside the building is being cooled/warmed up to the set-point, the thermal mass continues to transfer heat that is absorbed by the building's fabric from/to the interior, placing a greater demand on the cooling/heating system. Abstract: In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study to meet the building heating/cooling and power demand through a sustainable operation. We integrated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and triple effect absorption refrigeration system (TEARS) for space cooling/heating and water heating applications in buildings. The analysis is carried out to observe the effects of different operating conditions on the efficiency of the fuel cell, output of the fuel cell and TEARS, and the utilization factor of the system. It is found that the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water increases from 36% to 48.8%, 49% to 86%, and 14K to 23K, respectively when the temperature of the cell is increased for different cooling loads and membrane thicknesses. In addition, the increase in membrane thickness affected the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water in a negative way and they were found to be decreasing from 47.3% to 42%, 85% to 49%, and 23K to 12K, respectively for different cooling loads. The water supplied to the house is obtained from a geothermal water source which makes the system more sustainable. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper explores the current state-of-the-art in performance indicators and use of probabilistic approaches used in climate change impact studies. It presents a critical review of recent publications in this field, focussing on (1) metrics for energy use for heating and cooling, emissions, overheating and high-level performance aspects, and (2) uptake of uncertainty and risk analysis. This is followed by a case study, which is used to explore some of the contextual issues around the broader uptake of climate change impact studies in practice. The work concludes that probabilistic predictions of the impact of climate change are feasible, but only based on strict and explicitly stated assumptions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: It is well known that it is necessary to insulate the buildings to decrease the thermal demand and to decrease the use of heating and cooling. Due to the high cost of fossil fuels and to the necessity to reduce CO2 emissions, and also due to the new building regulations more attention is paid to the insulation of buildings. Different insulation materials are available in the market. Usually, they are compared by their thermal conductivity and with theoretical calculations, but there are no experimental comparisons available, where the behavior of such insulation materials in a building is compared over time. This is why the authors started a comparison of three typical insulation materials, polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool. For this purpose, four house-like cubicles were constructed (with a size of 2.4m×2.4m×2.4m) and their thermal performance throughout the time was measured. The cubicles were built under a conventional Mediterranean construction system, differing only in the insulation material used. During 2008 and the first months of 2009 the performance of these cubicles was evaluated, and the results are presented in this paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours. Abstract: This paper reports on an analytical investigation into the energy saving potential associated with modified comfort limits in transitional spaces in buildings. Such spaces may not require the same high level and close environmental control of more fully occupied spaces and thus a wider variation in conditions and interpretation of thermal comfort may be permitted. Estimations are made of energy saving potential based upon typical floor area proportions utilised for transition spaces of various types in office/commercial buildings. The data are combined with suggested norms for comfort expectation that have wider temperature limits than for normally occupied office zones. The method has been applied to a series of building types situated in the climate of the East Pennines area of the UK using a thermal analysis tool. The results show that useful energy savings (particularly for heating) are possible by allowing for a modest (and realistic) relaxation of prescribed comfort standards in transition spaces. Further work is now required to confirm the limits and assess energy saving in practice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
