This paper investigates factors associated with variation in daily total (electricity and gas) energy consumption in domestic buildings using linked pre-COVID-19 smart meter, weather, building thermal characteristics, and socio-technical survey data covering appliance ownership, demographics, behaviours, and attitudes for two nested sub-samples of 1418 and 682 British households selected from the Smart Energy Research Laboratory (SERL) Observatory panel. Linear mixed effects modelling resulted in adjusted R2 between 63% and 80% depending on sample size and combinations of contextual data used. Increased daily energy consumption was significantly associated (p -value < 0.05, VIF < 5) with: households living in buildings with more rooms and bedrooms, that are older, more detached, have air-conditioning, and experience colder (more heating degree days) or less sunny weather; households with more adult occupants, more children, older adult occupants, higher heating temperature setpoints, and that do not try to save energy. The results demonstrate the value of smart meter data linked with contextual data for improving understanding of energy demand in British housing. Accredited UK researchers are invited to apply to access the data, which has recently been updated to include over 13,000 households from across Great Britain. In this study, a solar based Rankine cycle and geothermal based system for multigeneration is designed and developed. It consists of a Rankine cycle with reheating for power generation, an absorption chiller cycle for cooling, a drying process to dry wet products, useful heat from the condenser of the Rankine cycle, and other useful heat out from heat exchangers. The overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the single generation and multigeneration systems are studied, and it is observed that the energy efficiency of the multigeneration system is higher than the single generation system. The energy efficiency of the single and multigeneration systems are 7% and 37%, respectively. Similarly, the overall exergy efficiencies for the single generation and multigeneration systems are also studied and presented in this paper. In addition to this, parametric studies are performed to observe the effects of different substantial parameters, namely inlet pressure and temperature of the turbine, and reference environment temperature in order to investigate the variations in the system performance in terms of the energy and exergy efficiencies. Abstract: District heating is used in many urban areas in Sweden. Almost always, the district heating utility is owned by the municipality and the municipality naturally encourages proprietors to connect their buildings to the grid, even if they cannot really force them to do so. The building owners are free to choose the best system, i.e. the cheapest one, for their need. Unfortunately, it is not always so easy to find the best solution. Mixed integer linear programming (MLIP) models might here come to help. By such computer programs it is possible to find the absolutely cheapest system of available alternatives, or even combinations among them. This paper shows how to design such a model and further how to closely depict the district heating, and electricity tariff. This is of course very important because the only interface between the proprietor of the building and the utility is found in this bureaucratic instrument. If the tariff is too high the building owners will choose other heating systems than district heating, or even worse, combining district heating with alternative base load sources. In Sweden, this has been of interest because ground-water coupled heat pumps can be profitable, operated by use of the relatively low electricity prices. In this paper we show that dual-fuel, and sometimes even triple-fuel systems, are of interest when the proprietor aims at minimising the cost for space and domestic hot-water heating. In practice, monthly temperature records play a major role calculating the heating and cooling degree-days of the air conditioner management in buildings. Classically, heating and cooling degree calculations are based on the comparison of outdoor temperature measurements with a standard level called the base temperature. Truncating the temperature series at a constant base temperature causes heating (deficits) and cooling (surpluses) degrees. Since outdoor temperature records are of random character, future predictions with probabilistic and statistical methods are convenient means for calculations. All previous methodologies in the literature are based on crisp logic with simple mathematical calculations. This paper proposes a new methodological approach by converting the actual temperature record probability distribution function (PDF) into a probabilistic standardized degree indicator (SDI) in normal (Gaussian) PDF form with zero mean and unit standard deviation. Furthermore, as a new evaluation methodology fuzzy logic inference calculations are provided. SDI is divided into seven classes, three for cooling, heating, and a single class for uncooled-unheated states. Heating and cooling degree changes according to SDI values are presented with crisp and fuzzy sets. The application of the methodology is made for Kadıköy urban area on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. In the case of fuzzy set SDI air conditioned operation, it has been determined that there is cooling energy saving of approximately 25% compared to the crisp set. This paper proposes a new method for an optimal control of the heating system at the building scale. This control is a new approach of energy planning that aims to decrease the heating consumption/expenses over a defined prediction horizon while respecting the occupants’ thermal comfort. It employs a simplified building thermal model to simulate the building thermal behavior taking into consideration the weather predictions. This approach is based on the application of Monte Carlo method, i.e., a random generator for the heating system scenarios. The aim is to determine the optimal heating plan for the prediction horizon that fulfills the constraints regarding the thermal comfort of occupants and the minimization of the energy consumption/expenses together with achieving a load shedding. Abstract: In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study to meet the building heating/cooling and power demand through a sustainable operation. We integrated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and triple effect absorption refrigeration system (TEARS) for space cooling/heating and water heating applications in buildings. The analysis is carried out to observe the effects of different operating conditions on the efficiency of the fuel cell, output of the fuel cell and TEARS, and the utilization factor of the system. It is found that the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water increases from 36% to 48.8%, 49% to 86%, and 14K to 23K, respectively when the temperature of the cell is increased for different cooling loads and membrane thicknesses. In addition, the increase in membrane thickness affected the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water in a negative way and they were found to be decreasing from 47.3% to 42%, 85% to 49%, and 23K to 12K, respectively for different cooling loads. The water supplied to the house is obtained from a geothermal water source which makes the system more sustainable. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: This paper reviews the annual energy and water performance of an aspiring low energy/carbon affordable housing development in southern UK, comprising 25 houses heated by a biomass fueled district heating network. Electrical, heat and water consumption data was collected for all dwellings and more detailed data logging was conducted on a sample of four. The data was analysed to benchmark the overall site performance and compare the individual dwellings. The individual dwellings performed efficiently in terms of electricity, heat and water consumption. Significant variation was identified between maximum and minimum consumers, even when typical performance correlates (i.e. number of occupants, floor area) were accounted for. Water consumption varies by a factor of > 7 and heat and electrical consumption by > 3 which, given the homogeneous design and specification of the buildings, suggested that occupant behaviour was important. Site-wide energy consumption and losses (over and above individual dwelling use) reduced energy and carbon emissions performance by 85% and 70% respectively. Although energy consumption in UK homes can be substantially reduced, the challenge for zero-carbon design is to address issues of total system performance, occupant behaviour and whole-building energy performance. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: Trigeneration systems, also known as Combined Heat, Cooling and Power (CHCP) systems, are interesting alternatives to supply different energy services in urban districts and in large buildings, particularly in warm areas such as Mediterranean countries. These systems can provide substantial benefits from economic, energetic, and environmental viewpoints, since the cogenerated heat can be used for heating in winter as well as cooling in summer with an absorption refrigerator. This paper develops an optimization model using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to determine the type, number and capacity of equipment in CHCP systems installed in the tertiary sector as well as to establish the optimal operation mode for the different plant components on an hour-by-hour basis throughout the year. The objective function to be minimized is the annual total cost. The optimization model considers the legal constraints imposed to feed the surplus autogenerated electricity into the grid at a regulated feed-in tariff. The optimization model is applied to design a system providing energy services for a hospital located in the city of Zaragoza (Spain). Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. In addition, over-cooling outdoor air (OA) flow couples the OA flow with the indoor heat removable needs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
