In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge/opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. • Long term field evaluation of forecast control of heating. • Easy integration with existing installations in buildings. • Widely applicable measure for energy savings around 10%. • Payback time below one heating season. The priority for reaching carbon neutral buildings by 2050 is to first increase energy efficiency in existing buildings by use of easily and widely applicable measures that are verified based on long-term field research. One such solution is a forecast control of heating systems, which can be quickly and easily integrated to existing weather based controls. However, there are still no long-term field evaluation and detailed analyses of the main features of such a system, which would provide a clear picture about the system's energetical and economical features and thus increase their wide application in existing buildings. This paper provides the data from a long term field evaluation of an innovative forecast control of heating systems (forHEAT), which can be easily installed (in less than 2 h) and integrated with existing installations in millions of existing buildings in Europe and throughout the world. The energy consumption for heating was evaluated in seven residential buildings and three public office buildings before and after the installation and use of the forecast control. The resulting energy savings averaged 13.4% in the residential and 10.7% in the public buildings located in continental European climate, with very cold winters. Abstract Beyond the definition and measurement of energy poverty, which have mainly attracted research interest over the last decades, attention has recently begun to turn to a broader notion of energy vulnerability. So far, this has mostly been approached on a theoretical base, suggesting the incorporation of broader socio-economic aspects into the energy poverty framework. However, the quantitative measurement of energy vulnerability is still an unexplored field of research. In this paper, the "Vulnerability Index" is developed, which, based on stochastic analysis, quantifies the vulnerability of a population to the energy poverty ratio, compared to a reference population. Moreover, Sensitivity Analysis quantifies the particular contribution of various parameters to the problem, by determining their weighting factors. As case study, the vulnerability of Greek mountainous regions with respect to the country level was studied. The results showed that households living in mountainous regions are more vulnerable versus those of the whole country, at 89.7%. It was also found that energy policy should focus on raising incomes of mountainous population and, afterwards, on energy saving measures and reduction of heating cost in mountains. Housing Stock Energy Models (HSEMs) play a determinant role in the study of strategies to decarbonise the UK housing stock. Over the past three decades, a range of national HSEMs have been developed and deployed to estimate the energy demand of the 27 million dwellings that comprise the UK housing stock. However, despite ongoing improvements in the fidelity of both modelling strategies and calibration data, their longevity, usability and reliability have been compromised by a lack of modularity and openness in the underlying algorithms and calibration data sets. To address these shortfalls, a new open and modular platform for the dynamic simulation of national (in the first instance, the UK) housing stocks has been developed—the Energy Hub (EnHub) . This paper describes EnHub’s architecture, its underlying rationale, the datasets it employs, its current scope, examples of its application, and plans for its further development. In this we pay particular attention to the systematic identification of housing archetypes and their corresponding attributes to represent the stock. The scenarios we analyse in our initial applications of EnHub, based on these archetypes, focus on improvements to housing fabric, the efficiency of lights and appliances and of the related behavioural practices of their users. In this we consider a perfect uptake scenario and a conditional (partial) uptake scenario. Results from the disaggregation of energy use throughout the stock for the baseline case and for our scenarios indicate that improvements to solid wall and loft thermal performance are particularly effective, as are reductions in infiltration. Improvements in lights and appliances and reductions in the intensity of their use are largely counteracted by increases in heating demand. Housing archetypes that offer the greatest potential savings are apartments and detached dwellings, owing to their relatively high surface area to volume ratio; in particular for pre-1919 and inter-war epochs. District heating system brings with it the problem of achieving a fair billing service for heating of apartment buildings in the case of uneven temperature in them. The problem is most pronounced when the individual apartments are completely excluded from the heating system of the building. The model of an existing building with 24 apartments was simulated in the software EnergyPlus, for different characteristics of the thermal envelope and different conditions of use, when the apartment with the lowest energy consumption is excluded from the heating system. It was simulated the exclusion of this apartment in which people are present and the lights and electrical appliances are turned on and in which there is no presence of people and electricity consumption (the apartment is empty). As a measure of energy flow between unheated and adjacent apartments, the parameter “stolen” energy is defined. The results of the conducted simulations show that the stolen energy is reduced by the exterior and interior insulation of the building. In this paper, data on energy flow when there is interior insulation in apartments, in particular according to the current regulations in Serbia, are especially analyzed. The results show that, depending on the case and scenario, the stolen energy ranges from 27.23 to 7.97 kWh/m 2 . During the master planning of neighbourhoods, design decisions related to the urban layout and typology affect the building form and availability of solar radiation considerably. The influence of those decisions on the energy demand for heating is often neglected however because appropriate energy simulation tools are lacking. This paper proposes a simple and accurate design tool to assess the solar gains and heating energy demand in buildings during the master planning phase of neighbourhoods. Detailed information on building geometry, constituting building elements and solar obstructions, is extracted from a 3D neighbourhood model using a plugin implemented in the modelling software SketchUp. This information is used to assess the heating energy demand of the buildings in the neighbourhood based on the dynamic Equivalent Heating Degree Day (dEHDD) method. Furthermore, the associated financial and environmental impacts are calculated based on an integrated life cycle approach, combining Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA) respectively. The design tool proposed is implemented for the Belgian context and used to analyse a number of schematic residential neighbourhood models with diverse built densities. The analysis reveals substantial differences in heating energy demand, life cycle financial and environmental costs. Neighbourhoods with a high built density and compact building types have a lower heating energy demand with potential reductions of up to 40% compared to neighbourhoods with a low built density and detached building types. This paper investigates factors associated with variation in daily total (electricity and gas) energy consumption in domestic buildings using linked pre-COVID-19 smart meter, weather, building thermal characteristics, and socio-technical survey data covering appliance ownership, demographics, behaviours, and attitudes for two nested sub-samples of 1418 and 682 British households selected from the Smart Energy Research Laboratory (SERL) Observatory panel. Linear mixed effects modelling resulted in adjusted R2 between 63% and 80% depending on sample size and combinations of contextual data used. Increased daily energy consumption was significantly associated (p -value < 0.05, VIF < 5) with: households living in buildings with more rooms and bedrooms, that are older, more detached, have air-conditioning, and experience colder (more heating degree days) or less sunny weather; households with more adult occupants, more children, older adult occupants, higher heating temperature setpoints, and that do not try to save energy. The results demonstrate the value of smart meter data linked with contextual data for improving understanding of energy demand in British housing. Accredited UK researchers are invited to apply to access the data, which has recently been updated to include over 13,000 households from across Great Britain. The aim of this paper is to propose a novel approach in order to accurately calculate the energy and economic savings due to the use of heat metering and thermostatic valves in residential buildings. The paper aims at proving that the present simplified approaches used in European Legislation may lead to significantly underestimate the profitability of this technology. The study is developed for four different typologies of buildings located in the city of Naples (South of Italy), including their geometrical and thermophysical properties. The buildings are first modelled in Google Sketchup and subsequently linked to the TRNSYS environment, which also includes a detailed model of the piping systems. The models allow one to evaluate, for every period of the year, energy demand, energy supplied by radiators, heat gains, transmission, etc. The developed models are used to calculate energy demands for three scenarios for each type of building: centralized heating systems not equipped with heat metering; thermostatic valves without heat metering; heat metering and thermostatic valves. The possible savings related to thermostatic valves and heat metering are estimated using the developed model. The results are compared with the ones provided by the Italian Standards. Results show that the thermostatic valves adoption leads to a significant reduction, up to 50%, of the thermal energy demand of the residential buildings and that all the proposed systems exhibit a remarkable economic profitability, with a payback period lower than 1.7 years. Application of Thermoeconomics in the diagnosis of building energy supply systems allows the localization and quantification of an abnormal operation, which can cause significant increase in energy consumption to obtain the same product. To do that, a comparison between the real operation of the energy system and the reference operation must be done. In this paper a DHW and heating plant based on a condensing boiler has been analysed. Diagnosis is applied through a mono-failure case using a methodology based on the fuel impact formula and the malfunction and dysfunction analysis. An innovative methodology will be presented in order to filter the induced effects that take place in a dynamic situation due to the control system. Although the real aim of diagnosis is to solve the inverse problem, in this work we have faced a direct problem, in which a parameter of one component of the plant has been modified and its effect over the other components and the whole plant is evaluated. The major outcome is that by the application of this methodology the effects produced by the faulty component can easily be quantified, both in performance and economic terms. Current indoor thermal environment is usually automatically controlled based on a temperature set-point given by room occupants or building managers. However, investigation shows that many temperature set-points are far from the comfortable temperature range recommended by design handbooks. Such unreasonable temperature set-points will result in not only uncomfortable indoor thermal environment, but also waste of cooling or heating energy. The authors have proposed a methodology of satisfaction based control to take place of the traditional set-point based control. This paper describes the experimental comparison results between satisfaction based indoor thermal environment control and set-point based control. Two test-beds were set up and a series of experiments was conducted to compare control performances, user acceptances, user work performances and system energy consumptions of the set-point based and satisfaction based control. The comparison results show that the satisfaction based control can achieve more stable thermal environment. Both of the two control methods can get relatively high scores regarding user acceptance and work performance. There are no statistically significant differences for user acceptance and work performance between two control methods. However, satisfaction based control consumed 15.3% and 11.9% less energy at two test-beds respectively than set-point based control due to more reasonable temperature settings given by the satisfaction based control. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a computational study on the energy consumption and related CO2 emissions for heating and cooling of an office building within the Urban Heat Island of London, currently and in the future. The study developed twenty weather files in an East-West axis through London; the weather files were constructed according to future climate change scenario for 2050 suitable for the UK which have been modified to represent specific locations within the London UHI based on measurements and predictions from a program developed for this purpose (LSSAT). The study simulated an office with typical construction, heat gains and operational patterns with an advanced thermal simulation program (IESVE). The predictions confirm that heating load decreases, cooling load and overheating hours increase as the office location moves from rural to urban sites and from present to future years. It is shown that internal heat gains are an important factor affecting energy performance and that night cooling using natural ventilation will have a beneficial effect at rural and city locations. As overheating will increase in the future, more buildings will use cooling; it is shown that this might lead to a five-fold increase of CO2 emission for city centre offices in London in 2050. Abstract: The article described the dilatancy technology of district heating system with high-temperature heat pump (HTHP). For the exploitation of low-temperature return network sources, a high-temperature heat pump with a heat exchanger was planned. As the core technology of the dilatancy district heating system, HTHP units and heat exchanging systems had been described detailedly through theoretical and experimental analysis. The model was proved to be in good agreement with the experiment data. It could be used for engineering design. In this paper the district heating system in Datong was taken as a case study. The main characteristics of the dilatancy district heating system had been presented in the form of diagrams. The principal advantage of dilatancy technology in the district heating system lies in increasing the temperature difference, reducing the diameters and the initial investment of primary side network. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. If a heat recovery unit is used, the difference in heating performance is even greater, rising to −70%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Building energy regulations, also referred to as building energy codes, emerged in the 1970s as an essential tool for improving energy efficiency and minimising energy consumption in buildings. Basically they aim at setting minimum energy efficiency requirements to achieve energy efficient design in new buildings. This paper analyses the development of building energy codes concerning Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) energy efficiency, along with their scope and compliance paths. The paper focuses on the synthesis of energy efficiency requirements on HVAC systems of non-residential buildings in different regulations. Critical issues for the development of prescriptive and performance regulatory paths for this type of systems in non-residential buildings are discussed in order to improve the understanding of HVAC energy efficiency topics and to provide policy makers with a menu of options to strengthen the HVAC section of building energy codes. This paper presents a practical method to optimize in-building section of centralized Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems which consist of indoor air loops and chilled water loops. First, through component characteristic analysis, mathematical models associated with cooling loads and energy consumption for heat exchangers and energy consuming devices are established. By considering variation of cooling load of each end user, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is employed to model duct and pipe networks and obtain optimal differential pressure (DP) set points based on limited sensor information. A mix-integer nonlinear constraint optimization of system energy is formulated and solved by a modified genetic algorithm. The main feature of our paper is a systematic approach in optimizing the overall system energy consumption rather than that of individual component. A simulation study for a typical centralized HVAC system is provided to compare the proposed optimization method with traditional ones. The paper briefly describes energy-efficiency standards that have been issued for residential buildings in Northern and Central China as well as energy-efficiency inspection standards and specifications for renovation of existing residential heating systems in Northern China, and development of energy-efficiency standards for Southern China. The paper also describes barriers to improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings in China and strategies for overcoming these barriers, including reform of the method of payment for heating in Northern China. • A new methodology to investigate the impact of thermal mass is defined. • The use of unrepresentative boundary conditions could lead to inaccurate conclusions. • High thermal mass helps to decrease and regulate the internal temperature. • High thermal mass could increase energy use in the summer and winter seasons. • Isolating thermal mass through internal insulation results in better energy performance than external insulation. Contradictory conclusions have been reported on whether thermal mass reduces or increases energy demand in hot and cold climates. A novel approach to measuring the impact of thermal mass on the building's energy consumption is presented. The method aims to better represent reality and applies two different control conditions simultaneously in a numerical model: the first condition, which has been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on the time duration of heating/cooling activation (simulating an occupancy pattern) and the second, which has not been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on both the time duration and the internal temperature (simulating an occupancy pattern and the thermostatic control system). When investigating the impact of thermal mass on the internal temperature in a scenario where no heat is transferred into the building, the high thermal mass outperforms the low thermal mass, showing a time-shifting effect, long time lag, and small decrement factor. However, when modelled using the method presented in this paper, high thermal mass results in greater energy consumption during summer and winter periods in Saudi Arabia. During transition seasons where temperature swings occur on either side of the indoor set-point temperatures, thermal mass reduces thermal transmission. The impact of thermal mass is also investigated for several climatic conditions in Saudi Arabia. Simulation results show that an internally exposed thermal massive wall section results in greater energy consumption when compared to a similar building with isolated thermal mass (i.e. insulated internally). This is due to the fact that even though the internal temperature inside the building is being cooled/warmed up to the set-point, the thermal mass continues to transfer heat that is absorbed by the building's fabric from/to the interior, placing a greater demand on the cooling/heating system. The layout of an underfloor heating system determines its heating performance. Conventionally, the design is completed by qualified experts using professional software, but this method is inefficient and heavily relies on the experts' previous experience. This paper proposes a hierarchical approach for the automatic design of underfloor heating systems aimed at residential buildings, and the underfloor heating layout problem is decomposed into a routing problem and coverage path planning problem. First, the routing problem is formulated as a shortest path problem in an appropriate routing graph and solved to provide the routing of pipes for further coverage. Subsequently, a depth-first layout algorithm is developed to recursively simplify the coverage path planning problem to obtain the basic rectangle layout, achieving uniform coverage of the given layout zone. Simulation results on two houses show that, unlike one popular commercial platform, the proposed approach generated feasible solutions in all 13 test instances. The new method improved the minimum temperature, average temperature, average percentage of nodes greater than 30 °C, and total energy efficiency by 3.18 °C, 0.79 °C, 3.23%, and 4.19%, respectively, with a lower variance on average. This paper reports the results of three innovative laboratory tests implemented during winter 2013 in the framework of the Climate for Culture European Project (2009–2014). Thermal analysis was used to assess the heating efficiency of some heaters with different power consumption, geometric shape and dimensions. Experimental laboratory results were obtained under natural indoor environmental conditions and the outcomes were applied to a real case study of two churches on the Italian Alps during the Friendly Heating project. Results provide useful information to help final users and/or conservators to exploit at the best the heating efficiency of some heaters on the basis of the geometric characteristics of the elements and represent helpful advices for their installation, considering both the optimal position for the maximum comfort performance and the need for not exceeding specific risk thresholds for artwork preservation. This paper discussed the influence of apartment location on household space heating energy demand per floor area in multi-apartment buildings. According to the actual data, apartment location has a significant impact on space heating consumption per floor area in multi-apartment buildings. Based on average data of each location, a corner unit on the top floor has a space heating consumption per floor area 26.1% higher than a center unit on the middle floor. For multi-apartment buildings, a correction should be made to reflect the effect of apartment location when billing is calculated from space heating consumption instead of floor area. Location correction factors (LCFs) of seven typical cities based on building type and building age were analyzed by calibrated simulation method. The study finds that LCFs for older buildings are smaller than those of younger buildings, varying from 0.8% to 15.3% for seven typical cities. As for different regions, the greater the heating degree day is, the larger the location correction factor (LCF) is, with the deviation among 5.7–14.4%. LCFs can provide a billing-tool to make a fair allocation of heating costs, which may promote the reform of heat metering and billing in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although China's heat metering technology has developed rapidly in recent years, the improvement demonstrates an unbalance in different provinces. It is of great significance to outlook application and sustainability of heat metering technology in various regions technically. Taking the sustainability of heat metering technology as research object, the author establishes a sustainable evaluation model in this paper. Factors in the evaluation model are assigned through a main questionnaire and actual application of typical projects. A pecking-order contrast method is adopted to determine weights of factors in the evaluation model, correspondingly sustainable development of heat metering in various locations is assessed. Sustainability scores in three regions (Northeast, Northwest and North China) are obtained via evaluation model. The model owns high accuracy compared with results of heat metering work assessment by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD). The heat metering in the three regions score 60, 62 and 75, respectively, implying that the sustainability in the northeast and northwest is unsatisfactory but in north is somehow better. It is suggested that envelope heat insulation should be increased in the northeast region, while policy support and heat metering technology ought to be enhanced in the northwest. • Freely available online overview of district heating efficiency indicators. • Hourly district heating energy use data from approx. 43 000 buildings. • Building stock segmented into building typologies for analysis of: • -1) Heating energy use intensity, 2) load variation and 3) cooling efficiency This paper provides a state-of-the-art and freely available online overview of the district heating (DH) efficiency of Danish building typologies. The overview is based on DH consumption data from 42 969 buildings constructed up until 2017 that in combination with data from the Danish Building and Dwelling Register constitutes a dataset with a previously unseen level of detail, confidence, sample size, and research opportunities. The paper also presents an initial analysis of the dataset in terms of three heating efficiency indicators, namely 1) Annual heating energy use intensity, 2) Daily heat load variation, and 3) Cooling efficiency. The overall finding was that building typologies perform significantly different from one another concerning indicators 1 and 2, but not for indicator 3. It is therefore not possible to declare one building typology more efficient than the other as this depends on the building construction year and the considered efficiency indicator. The data indicate that further energy-efficiency improvements of the existing building stock are essential to the realization of 4th Generation District Heating technologies in Denmark and that these improvements most likely will lead to increased heat load variations that need to be addressed, for instance by enabling a larger degree of demand-side flexibility in the existing district heating systems. The large temporal variation of the buildings' cooling efficiency indicates that there is a potential for rethinking e.g. domestic hot water production in the summer or introduce differentiated billing based on the daily, weekly, or maybe seasonal cooling performance. • A new enclosed melting system was built for deicing the bottom of a train. • A new method was used for simulating gravity shedding melting in complex models. • The effect of supply air properties on system performance was studied. In winter, a large amount of icing and snowing occurs in outdoor equipment and systems, which adversely affects their lifespan. The melting process is divided into two parts: convection melting and gravity shedding melting. This paper is based on an experiment with a real high-speed train unit, and it establishes a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of the bogie area to validate the mathematical model of the winter ice melting experiment. A numerical simulation was used to calculate the airflow in the baffle-enclosed space and to predict the effects of interactions between air and the ice body on heat transfer and phase change. The influence of air velocity and temperature on the heat transfer was analyzed. The computational simulation effectively quantifies the amount of heat transfer and energy consumption under different conditions. This paper also presents a research method for the simulation of gravity shedding in complex models. These models provide information for the construction of similar ice melting models. This paper has suggested that for thin ice bodies, convection melting was the dominant strategy. For thick ice bodies, however, gravity shedding melting became dominant. [Display omitted] The rapid development of urbanization has created high demand for central heating systems. This trend has led to an increase in energy consumption for central heating, which has made China's energy-saving transformation extremely difficult. However, the channel by which urbanization impacts and the future trends of energy consumption for central heating are still unclear. Therefore, this study employs the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) method to decompose the effect of urbanization on changes in energy consumption for central heating during 2001–2019 in China. We investigate the contribution of urbanization from demographic, economic and spatial perspectives. Additionally, a scenario analysis is used to explore trends in energy consumption for central heating in different projected urbanization scenarios. The results show that urbanization has a positive impact on energy consumption for central heating, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Demographic urbanization has the strongest positive effect on energy consumption for central heating, followed by spatial urbanization and then economic urbanization. Compared with the expansion of area and economic development, population agglomeration will bring more energy consumption for central heating. The forecasting results indicate that energy consumption for central heating will reach 176–189 Mtce in 2030, which is approximately 1.4 times the current level. This work quantifies the energy consumption for central heating in the future under urbanization. Abstract: The paper presents the methodology for the risk-based dimensioning of domestic hot water (DHW) and heating demands. It is demonstrated that they are stochastic variables. DHW demands are specified on the basis of hot water consumption statistics in Hungary. The standard values of heat demands for heating are based on the duration curve of external air temperatures. This study discusses daily mean temperature distribution in the heating season – between 15 October and 15 April in Hungary – and the description of its duration curve sorted by time. The authors verify the assumption that the duration curve can be described by normal distribution mathematically with high precision. Thereby they somewhat put an end to the process of mathematical experimentation on what function should be used to describe the frequency and duration curve of external daily mean temperatures in the heating season. Abstract: The paper presents a study of solar electricity generation and energy demand for heating and cooling of housing units’ assemblages. Two-story single family housing units, located in northern mid-latitude climate are considered in the study. Parameters studied include geometric shapes of individual units, their density in a neighborhood, and the site layout. The plan shapes of the housing units included in this study are rectangles and several variants of L shape. Site layouts studied are characterized by a straight road, a south-facing or a north-facing semi-circular road. Rectangular units and a site layout with straight road serve as reference for evaluating the effect of shape and site parameters. Results indicate that a significant increase in total electricity generation (up to 33%) can be achieved by the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems of housing units of certain shape-site configurations, as compared to the reference. The energy load of a building is affected by its orientation and shape. Increased heating demand by L variants (by up to 8%) is more than offset by annual electricity production of their BIPV systems (by up to 35%). Heating and cooling loads depend significantly on unit density in a site; Attached units require up to 30% less cooling and 50% less heating than detached configurations of the same site. Variation of surface orientation, particularly in curved site layouts, enables the spread of peak electricity generation over up to 6h. This effect may be beneficial to grid supply efficiency. Energy balance assessment indicates that some unit shapes generate up to 96% of their total energy use. Neighborhood configurations studied generate between 65% and 85% of their total energy demand. Abstract: In this paper we undertake a comprehensive study to meet the building heating/cooling and power demand through a sustainable operation. We integrated polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and triple effect absorption refrigeration system (TEARS) for space cooling/heating and water heating applications in buildings. The analysis is carried out to observe the effects of different operating conditions on the efficiency of the fuel cell, output of the fuel cell and TEARS, and the utilization factor of the system. It is found that the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water increases from 36% to 48.8%, 49% to 86%, and 14K to 23K, respectively when the temperature of the cell is increased for different cooling loads and membrane thicknesses. In addition, the increase in membrane thickness affected the efficiency, the utilization factor, and change in temperature of hot water in a negative way and they were found to be decreasing from 47.3% to 42%, 85% to 49%, and 23K to 12K, respectively for different cooling loads. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: This paper explores the current state-of-the-art in performance indicators and use of probabilistic approaches used in climate change impact studies. It presents a critical review of recent publications in this field, focussing on (1) metrics for energy use for heating and cooling, emissions, overheating and high-level performance aspects, and (2) uptake of uncertainty and risk analysis. This is followed by a case study, which is used to explore some of the contextual issues around the broader uptake of climate change impact studies in practice. Abstract: Energy use in the built environment represents a large part of total energy use in Sweden and is one important sector where energy conservation needs to be significantly improved in order to meet the national implementation of the European goals. One key question that needs to be investigated in relation to these goals is the performance and implementation of passive or low-energy houses. This paper presents results and an evaluation of a newly built house in an area with passive houses in Linköping, Sweden. Nine passive houses were built with the aim to be energy efficient, with an annual space heating demand of 21kWh/m2, and at the same time to have the same visual appearance as any other building in the surrounding area. This study evaluates the energy performance of a residential area with low-energy buildings based on Building Energy Simulation (BES) (IDA ICE 4), and measurements from the real object. Both annual and hourly validation is performed using room by room modeling and internal heat gains. A novel approach to internal heat gain modeling is presented using time-use data (TUD). Abstract: This paper introduces a comparison of different measuring methods of buildings fabric thermal resistance, including the test wall measuring points arrangements and measurement results, conducted in a test chamber in Cagliari (Italy) in summer 2009. Two methods and their measurement uncertainties are presented and compared by the compatibility of measurement study. The non-destructive method involves the heat-flow rate measurement through the test wall and its surface temperatures. The reliability of this method depends on the temperatures difference between the two environments separated by the building envelope. Thus two measurement series with different temperatures were carried out on the test wall. The destructive method instead foresees the acquisition of a sample by the use of a hollow drill, the building envelope layers thickness measurement and the thermal properties assignment to each different material. The wall R-value is the sum of each layer thermal resistance. The comparison shows that the R-values measured by the non-destructive method with a temperature difference of 10°C and 7°C and the one calculated from the destructive method obey the compatibility of measurement principle. Abstract: According to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) all new European buildings (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.) must since 2006 have an energy declaration based on the calculated energy performance of the building, including heating, ventilating, cooling and lighting systems. This energy declaration must refer to the primary energy or CO2 emissions. The European Organization for Standardization (CEN) has prepared a series of standards for energy performance calculations for buildings and systems. This paper presents related standards for heating systems. The relevant CEN-standards are presented and a sample calculation of energy performance is made for a small single family house, an office building and an industrial building in three different geographical locations: Stockholm, Brussels, and Venice. The additional heat losses from heating systems can be 10–20% of the building energy demand. The additional loss depends on the type of heat emitter, type of control, pump and boiler. Abstract: From energy statistics (primary energy consumption) and a few Census data (residential buildings floor area) the average specific primary energy use (kWh/m2) of a territorial (Regional or National) building stock may be easily evaluated. However, can we achieve a deeper insight on this building stock using basically the same data bases? This is the question which this paper is aiming at, and the results is an analytical methodology to determine the Statistical Distribution Of residential Buildings according to primary Energy consumption for heating purposes (E-SDOB) at a Regional or National scale. This tool may allow the legislator to define a performance scale for building energy certification, to introduce mandatory measures and incentives for building energy retrofits, to evaluate the potential of new technologies, etc. The main source of data required for determining E-SDOB is still the National Census, but it has to be integrated by energy standards and laws, literature and a few data taken from the authors’ experience and in situ analysis. Abstract: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. Based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model''s parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study on the impact of reflective coatings on indoor environment and building energy consumption. Three types of coatings were applied on identical buildings and their performance was compared with three sets of experiments in both summer and winter. The first experiment considers the impact of coatings on exterior and interior surface temperatures, indoor air temperatures, globe temperature, thermal stratification and mean radiant temperatures for non-conditioned buildings (free-floating case); the second one focused on the impact of coatings on reduction of electricity consumption in conditioned spaces; in the third experiment, the impact of different envelope material properties equipped with different coatings was investigated. The results showed that, depending on location, season and orientation, exterior and interior surface temperatures can be reduced by up to 20°C and 4.7°C respectively using different coatings. The maximum reduction in globe temperature and mean radiant temperature was 2.3°C and 3.7°C in that order. For the conditioned case, the annual reduction in electricity consumption for electricity reached 116kWh. Abstract: This paper presents model predictive controller (MPC) applied to the temperature control of real building. Conventional control strategies of a building heating system such as weather-compensated control cannot make use of the energy supplied to a building (e.g. solar gain in case of sunny day). Moreover dropout of outside temperature can lead to underheating of a building. Presented predictive controller uses both weather forecast and thermal model of a building to inside temperature control. By this, it can utilize thermal capacity of a building and minimize energy consumption. It can also maintain inside temperature at desired level independent of outside weather conditions. Nevertheless, proper identification of the building model is crucial. The models of multiple input multiple output systems (MIMO) can be identified by means of subspace methods. Oftentimes, the measured data used for identification are not satisfactory and need special treatment. Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation of energy-related and economic aspects of production of thermal energy to heat a family house with wood briquette. The object of the study was a detached house with an area of 247m2, situated in Olsztyn, in the north-east of Poland. The study lasted three years, from October 2006 to September 2009. The highest monthly consumption of wood briquette for thermal energy production: heating water for the central heating system and hot utility water production were recorded in January (1052–1333kg/month). The average annual briquette consumption ranged from 6.36 to 6.72t/year. With the mean lower heating value of briquette of 17.99GJ/t, the mean consumption of energy in the fuel ranged from 114 to 121GJ/year. The annual cost of heat production for a family house with briquette as fuel ranged from €572 to €651, during the 2006/2007 and 2008/2009 seasons, respectively. It would have been cheaper by €187–228year−1 to heat the house with seasoned willow chips, whereas using alternative fuels, such as hard coal (fraction 0.5–2.5cm) oak pellets, natural gas and heating oil would have increased the cost of heat production. Abstract: In this paper, we propose a vision-based system for human detection and activity analysis in indoor environment. The developed presence sensor is based on video analysis, using a static camera. Composed of three main steps, the first one consists in change detection using a background model updated at different levels to manage the most common variations of the environment. Second, a moving objects tracking, based on interest points, is performed. Third, in order to know the nature of the various objects that could be present in the scene, multiple cascades of boosted classifiers are used. The validation protocol, defined by the industrial partners involved in the CAPTHOM project focusing among other things on “Energy Management in Building”, is then detailed. Three applications integrated into the CAPTHOM project illustrate how the developed system can help in collecting useful information for the building management system. Occupancy detection and people counting as well as activity characterization and 3D location extend to a wide variety of buildings technology research areas such as human-centered environmental control including heating adjustment and demand-controlled ventilation, but also security and energy efficient buildings. Abstract: A traditional Chinese heating system, the Chinese Kang, is used by 175 million people in detached houses in the rural regions of China, especially in Northeast China. This system utilizes biomass such as corn stalks, straw, corncob and energy plants as the heat sources. The objective of this paper is to establish a set of models to simulate the energy performance of the Kang heating system in one Chinese detached house. An experimental field study was carried out to collect practical parameters in a newly constructed Chinese detached house. The dynamic performance of the Kang heating system was simulated by using IDA-ICE 4.0 embedded with an empirical model built in the field study. The results show that the simulation can obtain good overall agreement with the field measurement results. It was confirmed that the Kang model created by IDA-ICE 4.0 is capable of simulating the performance of the Kang system and of calculating energy consumption in the detached house. Moreover, the result reveals that the thermal environment in the present Chinese detached house is still poor during the severe cold season if only the Kang system is used to heat the whole house. Abstract: This paper reviews the annual energy and water performance of an aspiring low energy/carbon affordable housing development in southern UK, comprising 25 houses heated by a biomass fueled district heating network. Electrical, heat and water consumption data was collected for all dwellings and more detailed data logging was conducted on a sample of four. The data was analysed to benchmark the overall site performance and compare the individual dwellings. The individual dwellings performed efficiently in terms of electricity, heat and water consumption. Significant variation was identified between maximum and minimum consumers, even when typical performance correlates (i.e. number of occupants, floor area) were accounted for. Water consumption varies by a factor of > 7 and heat and electrical consumption by > 3 which, given the homogeneous design and specification of the buildings, suggested that occupant behaviour was important. Site-wide energy consumption and losses (over and above individual dwelling use) reduced energy and carbon emissions performance by 85% and 70% respectively. Although energy consumption in UK homes can be substantially reduced, the challenge for zero-carbon design is to address issues of total system performance, occupant behaviour and whole-building energy performance. Abstract: Green roofs are a passive cooling technique that stop incoming solar radiation from reaching the building structure below. Many studies have been conducted over the past 10 years to consider the potential building energy benefits of green roofs and shown that they can offer benefits in winter heating reduction as well as summer cooling. This paper reviews the current literature and highlights the situations in which the greatest building energy savings can be made. Older buildings with poor existing insulation are deemed to benefit most from a green roof as current building regulations require such high levels of insulation that green roofs are seen to hardly affect annual building energy consumption. As over half of the existing UK building stock was built before any roof insulation was required, it is older buildings that will benefit most from green roofs. Abstract: It is well known that it is necessary to insulate the buildings to decrease the thermal demand and to decrease the use of heating and cooling. Due to the high cost of fossil fuels and to the necessity to reduce CO2 emissions, and also due to the new building regulations more attention is paid to the insulation of buildings. Different insulation materials are available in the market. Usually, they are compared by their thermal conductivity and with theoretical calculations, but there are no experimental comparisons available, where the behavior of such insulation materials in a building is compared over time. This is why the authors started a comparison of three typical insulation materials, polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool. For this purpose, four house-like cubicles were constructed (with a size of 2.4m×2.4m×2.4m) and their thermal performance throughout the time was measured. The cubicles were built under a conventional Mediterranean construction system, differing only in the insulation material used. Abstract: Possible solutions for zero energy building design in UK are discussed in this paper. Simulation software (EnergyPlus and TRNSYS 16) are employed in this study, where EnergyPlus simulations are applied to enable facade design studies considering building materials, window sizes and orientations and TRNSYS is used for the investigation of the feasibility of zero energy houses with renewable electricity, solar hot water system and energy efficient heating systems under Cardiff weather conditions. Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours. Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. Abstract: The Chinese kang is an ancient integrated home system for cooking, sleeping, domestic heating and ventilation. It is still widely used today in nearly 85% of rural homes in northern China. In 2004, there were 67 million kangs used by 175 million people. Existing kang designs are mostly based on the intuition and accumulation of craftsman experience. There is a trend that Chinese kang is gradually replaced by bed and coal-burning radiators, domestic heating stoves, etc. using commercial energy. As rural building heating constitutes 25% of total building energy consumption in China, we consider that the transition and new technologies for rural home heating in northern China is crucial for managing future building energy consumption in China. This paper reviews the basic heat transfer and airflow principles of Chinese kang, as well as describing the traditional grounded kang and the relatively new elevated kang. The thermal performance of the kang is shown by data from literature and field surveys. The future of Chinese kang and research needs is also briefly discussed. In the current economic situation in Ukraine, the operation of heat supply systems occurs at a reduced temperature of circuit water. The increased temperature graph of 95/70 °C due to the high cost of fuel is impractical. The experience of such countries as Denmark, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Holland with developed centralized heat supply indicates the need for the first-class equipment of an individual heating point (IHP) of a building with an automatic control system, and then the transition to technology with a reduced temperature graph is carried out. Therefore, the modernization of heat supply systems in Ukraine aimed at the use of a reduced temperature graph will require a transition to closed independent heating systems, to qualitative and quantitative regulation and to automation of consumer IHP systems. A lot of district heating systems in Poland also require modernization to meet the requirements of the European Directive EED 2018/2002. Abstract: This paper investigates energy conservation, mitigation of CO2 emissions and economics of retrofitting for a honey storage building with Trombe wall for winter heating application. The passive heating potential of Trombe wall for a honey storage building was estimated using TRNSYS building simulation software. This honey storage building is located at Gwalior (latitude: 26°14′N) in India. During winter months, the room air temperature of building falls below the required temperature range of 18–27°C which is suitable for honey storage. So, the room air temperature range is maintained in the building using a 2.3kW capacity electrical oil filled radiator (or room air heater) which accounts for the major energy consumption of the building on an annual basis. On account of which there are significant CO2 emissions into the atmosphere from the honey storage building. Hence, this case study was conducted to recommend the passive heating concept to the stakeholders of the building so as to conserve the energy requirement for room air heating. The investigation showed that the room air temperature can be easily maintained in the range suitable for honey storage using a vented Trombe wall. The experimental work was carried out for the existing building on a typical clear day of harsh winter month of January to validate the results of TRNSYS model of the present building. The statistical error analysis showed a good agreement between model and experimental results. This investigation concludes that there is potential of energy conservation up to 3312kWh/year and associated reduction in CO2 emissions (∼33tonne/year) using a Trombe wall. Abstract: This paper reports on an analytical investigation into the energy saving potential associated with modified comfort limits in transitional spaces in buildings. Such spaces may not require the same high level and close environmental control of more fully occupied spaces and thus a wider variation in conditions and interpretation of thermal comfort may be permitted. Estimations are made of energy saving potential based upon typical floor area proportions utilised for transition spaces of various types in office/commercial buildings. The data are combined with suggested norms for comfort expectation that have wider temperature limits than for normally occupied office zones. The method has been applied to a series of building types situated in the climate of the East Pennines area of the UK using a thermal analysis tool. The results show that useful energy savings (particularly for heating) are possible by allowing for a modest (and realistic) relaxation of prescribed comfort standards in transition spaces.
