In this paper, the problem of dispatching the operation of a distribution feeder comprising a set of heterogeneous resources is investigated. The main objective is to track a power trajectory, called the dispatch plan , which is computed the day before the beginning of operation. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally compute the dispatch plan so as to optimize the operation of the feeder while making sure to allocate enough local reserves to absorb deviations of the realizations. Indeed, during real-time operation, due to the stochasticity of part of the resources in the feeder portfolio, tracking errors need to be absorbed in order to track the committed dispatch plan. This is achieved by modulating the power consumption of a utility-scale battery energy storage system and of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of a commercial controllable building. To this end, a hierarchical controller is designed to coordinate these two controllable entities while requiring a minimal communication infrastructure. Due to the inherent different response times of these systems, the power injection of the electrical battery is controlled at a sub-minute time-scale so as to absorb high-frequency tracking errors and, therefore, deliver the dispatch service. At a slower time-scale, the controllable building is controlled to maintain the state of charge for the electrical battery at a scheduled level by means of a model predictive controller. The model predictive controller is designed in order to account for both comfort and operational constraints of the controllable building, as well as power limits for the electrical storage. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is demonstrated by means of both an extensive simulation analysis, as well as a set of 12 full day experimental results on the 20 kV distribution feeder in the campus of the Swiss institute of technology in Lausanne, that is comprised of: 1) A set of uncontrollable resources represented by five office buildings (350 kWp) and a roof-top photovoltaic installation (90 kWp), 2) a set of controllable resources, namely, a grid-connected electrical storage (720 kVA–500 kWh), and a fully-occupied multi-zone office building (45 kWp). Abstract Understanding occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort is essential to defining the operational settings for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings. Due to the continuous impact of human and environmental factors, occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort level can change over time. Thus, to dynamically control the environment, thermal comfort should be monitored in real time. This paper presents a novel non-intrusive infrared thermography framework to estimate an occupant's thermal comfort level by measuring skin temperature collected from different facial regions using low-cost thermal cameras. Unlike existing methods that rely on placing sensors directly on humans for skin temperature measurement, the proposed framework is able to detect the presence of occupants, extract facial regions, measure skin temperature features, and interpret thermal comfort conditions with minimal interruption of the building occupants. The method is validated by collecting thermal comfort data from a total of twelve subjects under cooling, heating and steady-state experiments. The results demonstrate that ears, nose and cheeks are most indicative of thermal comfort and the proposed framework can be used to assess occupants’ thermal comfort with an average accuracy of 85%. Real-time optimization (RTO) has been developed to improve the cost and/or energy efficiency of complex heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In current literature, almost all of the developed real-time optimization methods belong to the type of time-driven optimization, in which the action of optimization is triggered by “time”. As optimization should be done when the system operating conditions experience a change that is large enough to cause current operational setting not optimal any more, optimization strategies should recognize ‘significant’ changes and perform optimization when necessary. Since the time-driven optimization is a periodic mechanism in nature while those ‘significant’ changes may not be periodic, the time-driven optimization cannot capture ‘significant’ changes and do the optimization promptly. Therefore, this paper proposes an event-driven optimization (EDO) for complex HVAC systems, the key idea of which is to use “event” rather than “time” to trigger the action of optimization. A systematic event-driven optimization method is illustrated, where its main tasks, including event definition and event identification, will be discussed. Building energy simulators such as TRNSYS, EnergyPlus, and Esp-r offer an excellent opportunity for detailed design of house thermal model and its Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and provide very accurate simulation results useful for performance analysis and optimization process. In contrast, these energy simulators do not include sub-models of advanced devices/strategies for control of HVAC system operation and suffer from poor control mechanism. In addition to lack of an advance controller, they inherently offer no mechanism for estimating the future state of their process models based on forecast weather dataset. Hence, no predictive controller can be designed and implemented within these simulators. This paper discusses the development of a Matlab-TRNSYS co-simulator in order to control/manage a TRNSYS program, which was previously developed and calibrated based on the characteristics of a real case study house, with an advanced predictive controller. This co-simulator investigates the effectiveness of different predictive strategy planning models, including Load Shifting (LSH), Smart Dual Fuel Switching System (SDFSS), and LSHSDFSS, as the integration of fuel switching and load shifting strategy planning models on 24 h ahead energy cost saving of the case study house HVAC system. Simulation results of different consecutive sample days indicate that SDFSS could bring significant energy cost saving. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Abstract: This paper presents a review of studies on natural convection heat transfer in the triangular enclosure namely, in attic-shaped space. Much research activity has been devoted to this topic over the last three decades with a view to providing thermal comfort to the occupants in attic-shaped buildings and to minimising the energy costs associated with heating and air-conditioning. Two basic thermal boundary conditions of attic are considered to represent hot and cold climates or day and night time. This paper also reports on a significant number of studies which have been performed recently on other topics related to the attic space, for example, attics subject to localized heating and attics filled with porous media. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. If a heat recovery unit is used, the difference in heating performance is even greater, rising to −70%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Design engineers commonly oversize HVAC systems with the justification of needing a reasonable safety factor to manage periods more extreme than the specific design conditions. Unfortunately, the safety factor easily becomes excessive. The design engineers minimize their professional risk, and by doing so they are actually asking the building owner to pay an immediate penalty due to increased first cost of equipment and an ongoing penalty due to maintenance and energy use implications. The penalties associated with excessive safety factors are often not communicated to the client. This paper presents the results of a study of “rightsizing” rooftop HVAC systems. The study included intensive interviews with HVAC designers investigating the design process and extensive field measurement of rooftop units (RTUs) during peak cooling conditions. This paper focuses on defining the signature of oversizing, i.e. how to use the physical measurements to quantify the degree of oversizing of an RTU and how to estimate the penalty of oversizing in terms of energy consumption and peak electricity demand. Utility companies incentive programs have not yet identified mechanisms for incentivizing rightsizing of HVAC system. This paper presents a nonlinear hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach for building energy systems based on Modelica. The MPC approach takes into account two characteristics that are very common for building energy systems: nonlinearities (inherent in the building envelope and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems) and discontinuities (in the form of on/ off operation, discrete operation states and operation modes). The hybrid MPC approach integrates both continuous and discrete optimization variables into the control concept and thus is capable of controlling building energy systems with binary or integer decision variables, switching dynamics or logic if-then-else constraints. By employing a time-variant linearization approach, nonlinear Modelica optimization problems are approximated with high accuracy and transformed into a linearized state-space representation. Based on the linearization output, a linearized optimization problem is generated automatically in every MPC iteration, which is extensible by various integer characteristics and is accessible for a wide range of mixed-integer solvers. A simulation study on a nonlinear Modelica building energy system demonstrates the control quality of the proposed toolchain revealing a small linearization error and successful integration of multiple integer characteristics. In practice, monthly temperature records play a major role calculating the heating and cooling degree-days of the air conditioner management in buildings. Classically, heating and cooling degree calculations are based on the comparison of outdoor temperature measurements with a standard level called the base temperature. Truncating the temperature series at a constant base temperature causes heating (deficits) and cooling (surpluses) degrees. Since outdoor temperature records are of random character, future predictions with probabilistic and statistical methods are convenient means for calculations. All previous methodologies in the literature are based on crisp logic with simple mathematical calculations. This paper proposes a new methodological approach by converting the actual temperature record probability distribution function (PDF) into a probabilistic standardized degree indicator (SDI) in normal (Gaussian) PDF form with zero mean and unit standard deviation. Furthermore, as a new evaluation methodology fuzzy logic inference calculations are provided. SDI is divided into seven classes, three for cooling, heating, and a single class for uncooled-unheated states. Heating and cooling degree changes according to SDI values are presented with crisp and fuzzy sets. The application of the methodology is made for Kadıköy urban area on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. In the case of fuzzy set SDI air conditioned operation, it has been determined that there is cooling energy saving of approximately 25% compared to the crisp set. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems consume almost half of the total energy consumption in buildings. In order to reduce the energy consumption of HVAC systems in buildings, different passive heating and cooling strategies and thermal energy storage systems have been adopted. Water wall is an excellent short-term thermal energy storage system which can be used to maintain thermal comfort in buildings while reducing the heating and/or cooling load of the buildings. A significant amount of research work on water wall has been carried out since the 1980s. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the previous studies of water wall systems, focussing mainly on the performance of various configurations of water wall systems and the different research approaches adopted in the literature. The advantages and disadvantages of the different research approaches have been highlighted. It is revealed that the existing water wall research has been based mainly on an energy balance model and experimental modelling, but CFD (computational fluid dynamics) modelling has attracted little attention. Energy signatures for air conditioning systems can have characteristics which are not seen with heating systems. This paper explains and illustrates some of the characteristics that are specific to air conditioning systems and describes how energy signatures that take account of them can be applied to produce benchmarks, control charts and diagnostic information. It focusses on the use of energy signatures derived from measured daily system energy consumption. Daily energy signatures can generate more robust energy consumption benchmarks and provide additional insight into unusual energy demand patterns compared to monthly or weekly signatures, albeit requiring slightly more data. In particular, they distinguish between weekday and weekend consumptions. They can be used to generate benchmarks based on standardised annual consumption or standardised annual load factor. In addition they can be used to generate control charts to identify days of unusual consumption for individual systems. Wireless sensor network (WSN) for building applications has been considered by many HVAC experts as an efficient tool to promote building energy efficiency and indoor thermal comfort. This paper, therefore, proposes a strategy of using WSN to monitor the temperature distribution in a large-scale indoor space, which aims to (i) improve the quality of the measurements transmitted by wireless signals, (ii) identify the temperature distribution pattern of the large-scale space, and (iii) optimize the allocation of supply air rated flow rate to multiple supply air terminals that serve the space according to the identified temperature distribution pattern. The developed strategy is illustrated by applying it to a real WSN test bed, installed in a typical large-scale space in Hong Kong. Results are presented and discussed, which shows that the phenomenon of temperature uneven distribution was commonly existent in a large-scale space and the developed strategy was able to efficiently improve the quality of measurements by WSN and improve the temperature homogeneity in the large-scale space. Energy conservation and emission reduction have become a global consensus. As a novel promising energy-saving dehumidification technology, desiccant coated heat exchanger (DCHE)-based air conditioning systems have attracted immense attention recently. This paper provides a quick and reasonable selection of desiccant materials for DCHE systems using water as the cooling medium in different buildings and climates. By the theoretical calculation of moisture needed to be removed in three types of buildings (offices, residential buildings and restaurants) and the analysis of the dehumidification capacity of desiccants in DCHEs reported in the literature, optimal desiccants for different building types and ambient air conditions under given parameters are recommended. Salt-supported porous composite desiccants possess flexible dehumidification performance and can be utilized in most climates and building types, except for extremely humid indoor environments with high requirement for fresh air. Zeolites are especially suitable for return air states, American Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) summer and ARI humid climates in buildings with moderate indoor moisture gain, such as offices or residential buildings. Polyelectrolytes can be applied in humid climates and buildings with high indoor wet loads, such as restaurants. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. The results confirm our analysis of global datasets and show that humidex is a good predictor of indoor thermal comfort at high humidity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper presents a study of solar electricity generation and energy demand for heating and cooling of housing units’ assemblages. Two-story single family housing units, located in northern mid-latitude climate are considered in the study. Parameters studied include geometric shapes of individual units, their density in a neighborhood, and the site layout. The plan shapes of the housing units included in this study are rectangles and several variants of L shape. Site layouts studied are characterized by a straight road, a south-facing or a north-facing semi-circular road. Rectangular units and a site layout with straight road serve as reference for evaluating the effect of shape and site parameters. Results indicate that a significant increase in total electricity generation (up to 33%) can be achieved by the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems of housing units of certain shape-site configurations, as compared to the reference. The energy load of a building is affected by its orientation and shape. Increased heating demand by L variants (by up to 8%) is more than offset by annual electricity production of their BIPV systems (by up to 35%). Heating and cooling loads depend significantly on unit density in a site; Attached units require up to 30% less cooling and 50% less heating than detached configurations of the same site. Variation of surface orientation, particularly in curved site layouts, enables the spread of peak electricity generation over up to 6h. This effect may be beneficial to grid supply efficiency. Energy balance assessment indicates that some unit shapes generate up to 96% of their total energy use. Neighborhood configurations studied generate between 65% and 85% of their total energy demand. Abstract: A retrofit study was conducted in an unoccupied manufactured house to investigate the impacts of airtightening on ventilation rates and energy consumption. This paper describes the retrofits and the results of the pre- and post-retrofit assessment of building airtightness, ventilation, and energy use. Building envelope and air distribution systems airtightness were measured using fan pressurization. Air change rates were measured continuously using the tracer gas decay technique. Energy consumption associated with heating and cooling was monitored through measurement of gas consumption by the forced-air furnace for heating and electricity use by the air-conditioning system for cooling. The results of the study show that the retrofits reduced building envelope leakage by about 18% and duct leakage by about 80%. The reduction in the house infiltration rates depended on weather conditions and the manner in which the heating and cooling system was controlled, but in general these rates were reduced by about one third. The energy consumption of the house for heating and cooling was reduced by only about 10%, which is relatively small but not totally unexpected given that infiltration only accounts for a portion of the heating and cooling load. Abstract: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. Based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model''s parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Abstract: In this paper numerical transient simulations were used to investigate the air flow patterns, distribution and velocity, and the particulate dispersion inside an existing typical hospitalization room equipped with an advanced Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), with Variable Air Volume (VAV) primary air system designed for immune-suppressed patients never modelled before. The three-dimensional models of the room consider different, most typical, positions of the patients. Results indicate the best conditions for the high induction air inlet diffuser and the scheme of pressures imposed in the room to provide the effective means of controlling flows containing virus droplets. We believe that our work exemplifies the usefulness of numerical investigations of HVAC performances in real situations and provides important recommendations towards disease control and careful design and optimization of ventilation in hospital settings. Abstract: This paper is concerned with the development of a mathematical model, capable of describing the quasi-steady state performance of an integrated ground source heat pump, which is used for heating and cooling of an institutional building located in a Mediterranean climate. The model is structured on functional basis according to the heat pump vapour compression or primary circuit, a secondary ground loop circuit and a secondary building loop circuit. Heat pump heating and cooling capacities, as well as COP, are considered to be dependent variables and are estimated in the model using performance fitted maps. Independent variables include: compressor speed, circulation pump speeds, ground loop return temperature and building circuit return temperature. The model is validated using data from a full-scale ground source heat pump installation. The validated model is used to examine system capacity and performance sensitivity to different control optimisation strategies, including set-point control of room air temperature, room air bandwidth temperature, building loop return water temperature and building loop return bandwidth temperature. Abstract: The significant and continuous increment in the global electricity consumption is asking for energy saving strategies. Efficient control for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC) is the most cost-effective way to minimize the use of energy in buildings. In this framework, an energy management and control system (EMCS) has been developed to schedule electricity end-uses in the campus of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Spain. This paper presents an evaluation performed by using the EMCS of different control strategies for HVAC split systems. It analyzed the effect of different schedules for a common air-conditioning device and demand response strategies are tested in several situations. The economic saving is calculated taking into account the electricity contract clauses. Finally, a test is made for the control of a group of similar devices in order to reduce the maximum peak power in consumption and to obtain a flexible load shape with the HVAC loads. Abstract: The paper presents an extended method for exergy analysis of buildings and Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, according to an energy demand build-up model from the building side to the energy supply side. The HVAC systems comprise a thermal energy emission and control system, a thermal distribution system, an electricity distribution system and an energy conversion system. Energy and exergy that are required by a building and a HVAC system are posed into the external part and classified by different forms of energy carriers. The external part is out of the boundary of the study. The method is illustrated with an office building equipped with low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling systems situated in the Netherlands. Thermal exergy and thermal energy demands of the building and thermal energy and thermal exergy losses occurring in the HVAC systems are discussed. The building and the HVAC systems to be considered meet standard Dutch energy performance regulations. Nevertheless their overall exergy efficiencies are low in both cases (17.15% and 6.81% subsequently). The exergy analysis also pinpoints that the thermal energy emission and control system and the energy conversion system are the main causes of the exergy inefficiencies in the heating and cooling cases, respectively. Abstract: The large thermal time constant of thermally activated building systems (TABS) hampers communication between the system''s production and emission. Therefore, conventional building control strategies, typically using room temperature feedback, are unadapted to control thermal comfort efficiently. In this paper, measurement data and simulation results reveal that unadapted TABS control has a dramatic impact on overall energy performance. Measurements in a TABS building with room temperature feedback show the HVAC system switching between heating and cooling in a very short time frame. A simplified, generic room model is used to simulate, understand and evaluate this behaviour. For room temperature feedback control, only 45% of the cold and 15% of the heat produced actually controls room temperature. The remainder is stored in the TABS and exchanged between the heating and cooling system. Enlarging the heating-to-cooling set point band improves this ratio, while maintaining thermal comfort. On the other hand, night time operation control of the circulation pump, adapted to the TABS thermal time constant, eliminates this ‘unused’ energy completely. In this case, however, even with perfect heat gain forecasts, it is difficult to avoid room temperatures dropping below thermal comfort limits during initial office hours. Abstract: Axiomatic design (AD) is a theory that helps to develop new design objects and allows one to evaluate the quality of designs. The aim of this paper is to apply this theory to the design of heat ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and to come to conclusions about the design quality of some specific applications. The focus is the comfort and energy consumption in commercial buildings in South European climates. The discussion contains a brief description of variable air volume (VAV) systems and dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) with terminal units, such as fan-coils, induction units and chilled ceilings. Occasionally, the DOAS design should include over-cooled outdoor air in order to ensure an extra cooling means. According to the AD''s first axiom, ideal systems are independent or decoupled. Our conclusion is that VAV and DOAS with induction units are coupled designs, and on the other end, DOAS with fan-coils or chilled ceilings are decoupled designs. In addition, over-cooling outdoor air (OA) flow couples the OA flow with the indoor heat removable needs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In the last decade a lot of research effort has been spent on identifying the effect of the urban climate on the energy performance of buildings and HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) systems. In this paper a methodology is proposed to assess that effect by the exclusive use of modeled data. Particularly, by using a downscaling modeling procedure a process for the generation of weather files for energy calculations is achieved. From a non-hydrostatic weather model the urban climate of the city of Lisbon is simulated and via a weather generator climatic data files for the buildings’ simulation software are derived. The results on the energy behavior of a reference test cell for different sites inside the city of Lisbon are presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Solar air collectors are important components for solar energy utilization in green houses. In this paper, experimental studies were carried out regarding to a solar air collector (SAC), for which the length of air channel is 1500mm, the width is 500mm, and a variable air channel gap ranges from 100 to 500mm. In the experiment, the uniform heat flux along the air channel is effected by three electric heating plates, which play a role as solar radiation. It is found that the temperature distribution of air and the induced natural air-flow rate are highly dependent on heat input, inclination angle, channel gap, etc. Experimental results indicate that the optimum inclination angle for the SAC is 45°, under which a maximum natural ventilation rate can be created. Also found is that there exists an appropriate channel length, about 1m in this study, beyond which the obtained heat and the natural ventilation rate cannot be increased drastically. Higher the volume of air-flow rate through the SAC, lower the temperature difference between inlet and outlet, consequently, it should be balanced between the air temperature rise and a suitable mechanical air-flow rate in order to obtain maximum heat. Additionally, theoretical analysis based on heat balance equations is testified to agree well with experimental results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
