10. Energy Analysis of Relics Museum Buildings

Abstract

With an increase of building energy consumption, the requirement of building energy conservation becomes a key importance of national energy development. It's not feasible to apply the traditional method to predict and analyze energy consumption in relics museums like the Emperor Qin's Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses Museum at Xi’an City, China, due to the particularities of soil and building structures. This paper uses commercial software DeST to analyze the building energy consumption by estimating building cooling and heating loads hourly. The single factor method is used to analyze the affection of load influential factors and the average unit change value and rate method is used to analyze the factor levels. The predicted results show that the simulated building possesses considerable energy saving potential. In addition, the significance of various loading impact factors is further discussed.

11. Experimental Investigation of a Spiral Tube Embedded Latent Thermal Energy Storage Tank Using Paraffin as PCM.

Abstract

Latent thermal energy storage (LTES) is widely used in excess energy reservation. The performance of a LTES unit is critical for its application. In this study, the spiral tube embedded LTES tank is investigated experimentally, with a composite of paraffin as the phase change material (PCM). Temperature distribution of PCM in the tank was obtained, for both charging and discharging processes. The results showed that during the charging process, the temperature of upper part of PCM increases faster than that in the lower part, which is considered as the effect of natural convection of PCM that dominates the charging process. Inlet water temperature has a greater influence rather than flow rate on heat transfer performance since the increase of temperature difference between HTF and PCM reduces all thermal resistance in the heat transfer, however it could not be increased infinitely to enhance heat transfer performance. 12. Direct Numerical Simulation on Melting Phase Change Behavior in Open-cell Metal Foam.

Abstract

This study presented a pore-scaled numerical simulation on the melting phase change heat transfer of a phase change material (PCM) impregnated in open-cell metal foam. Idealized tetrakaidecahedron was selected as the representing unit cell (UC) to mimic the real foam microstructure and an assembly of tetrakaidecahedron UCs with six lines and three rows was built for computation. Phase change heat transfer in PCM and coupled heat transfer between PCM and metallic ligaments were directly simulated. To address the contribution of natural convection in the melting phase to the overall melting time and pore-scaled melting interface, natural convection in the interstitial fluid was modeled and compared with the conduction-dominated case. Results demonstrated that micro-foam can significantly accelerate the melting phase change rate and further enhancement was observed at pore scale when natural convection in the melting phase was triggered on. Abstract

In this paper, a radiant heating system is introduced, which was developed based on the model of capillary radiant terminal (CRT) combined with solar thermal energy usage and phase change thermal storage (PCTS) technology. The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility and the stability of the system that could be applied into residential buildings in the actual construction. The indoor thermal environment based on the tested system is analyzed in this paper. According to the weather condition of Xi’an, the winter average solar insolation and the ambient temperature were 9.14 MJ/m 2 and 8.9 o C, respectively. The experimental results show that the average heating capacity of the designed system was about 1.08 kW for a typical sunny day in the winter. It was higher than the simulated heating load. As a result, the indoor air temperature reached 18 o C, which sufficiently met the requirement of indoor thermal condition. It is also found that the indoor air temperature distributes uniformly and the maximum difference of the vertical temperatures was less than 3.2 o C. This indicates that the indoor thermal comfort of the test room can be classified in the comfort level of A.
