ABSTRACT The defects that drying in concrete yards impose on coffee beans and the search for gourmet coffee production have prompted the emergence of new drying technologies. This work verified the technical and economic feasibility of drying coffee with dehumidified air with a refrigerating capacity of 422,908.7 J s-1, compatible with static capacity dryers equal to 75 m3. Considering the sale price of coffee, the cost of electric energy acquisition, the monthly interest rate and maintenance time, expenses that are equivalent to the depreciation of the concrete yard, a central compound rotational design was considered with 28 tests for the feasibility analysis, including the internal rate of return, net present value and the return on investment. The results showed that in the electric drying units, the dried coffee presents fewer broken and defective beans and has higher retention in a No. 17 sieve. With a higher beverage quality and a price 12.11% higher, drying with dehydrated air showed a PBD of 2.27 years and a return of US$ 2.49 million. The optimisation results were 98.98% desirable. It was concluded that it is economically feasible to dry coffee with dehydrated air and without using a concrete yard.

ABSTRACT The coffee crop requires great spray ability to penetrate into the plant canopy during the application of pesticides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spray deposition on leaves of coffee plants and the chemical control of the leaf miner provided by the application of different spray nozzles, with and without the use of an auxiliary boom. The deposition on the upper, middle and lower parts of the plants and the losses to the soil were evaluated using a tracer quantified by spectrophotometer. We also evaluated the chemical control of the leaf miner, counting the larvae, after the application of the insecticides cartap and fenpropathrin. The trial was carried out in a randomized block design, with four replications, in a factorial model (2×2+1): with and without the auxiliary boom, three spray nozzles (hollow cone – MAG 02, flat fan – AD 11002 and air induction hollow cone – TVI 8002) and a control. The use of the auxiliary boom increased the deposition in the lower part of the plants but decreased in the middle part, besides the increase in the runoff. The different nozzles do not provided differences in the deposition, showing the technical feasibility in the use of the hollow cone nozzles with coarse droplets and flat fan. All the chemical control decreased the leaf miner population, without differentiation.

Irrigation management can be established, considering the soil water potential, as the limiting factor for plant growth, assuming the soil water content between the field capacity and the permanent wilting point as available water for crops. Thus, the aim of this study was to establish the soil water potential interval during four different phenological phases of coffee irrigated by center pivot. The experiment was set at the experimental area of the Engineering Department at the Federal University of Lavras, in Brazil. The coffee variety planted is designated as Rubi, planted 0.8 meters apart, with rows spaced 3.5 meters apart. The treatments corresponded to the water depths applied based on different percentages of Kc and reference evapotranspiration (ET0) values. Sensors were used to measure the soil water potential interval, installed 25 centimeters depth. In order to compare the results, it was considered as the best matric potential the one that was balanced with the soil water content that resulted in the largest coffee productivity. Based on the obtained results, we verified that in the phases of fruit expansion and ripening, the best results were obtained, before the irrigations, when the soil water potential values reached -35 and -38 kPa, respectively. And in the flowering, small green and fruit expansion phases, when the values reached -31 and -32 kPa, respectively.O manejo de irrigação pode ser estabelecido considerando-se o potencial de água no solo, como fator limitante para o crescimento das plantas, assumindo o teor de água no solo entre a capacidade de campo e o ponto de murcha permanente, como água disponível para as culturas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estabelecer o intervalo de potencial matricial de água no solo para o manejo de irrigação, em quatro estádios fenológicos do cafeeiro irrigado por pivô central. O experimento foi desenvolvido na área experimental do Departamento de Engenharia, na Universidade Federal de Lavras. A variedade de cafeeiro cultivado foi a "Rubi", plantada no espaçamento de 3,5 x 0,80 m. Os tratamentos corresponderam a lâminas de água aplicadas em função de percentagens de valores de Kc e da evapotranspiração de referência (ET0). Para a obtenção do intervalo de potencial matricial de água no solo, foram instalados sensores de umidade tipo watermark, na profundidade de 0,25 m. Para a comparação dos resultados, considerou-se como melhor intervalo de potencial matricial, aquele em equilíbrio com o teor de água no solo, que resultou em maior produtividade da cultura. Com base nos resultados, verificou-se que, nas fases de granação e maturação dos frutos, os melhores resultados foram registrados quando, em geral, antes das irrigações, os valores de potencial matricial de água no solo alcançados foram de -35 a -38 kPa, e nas fases de dormência e florada, chumbinho e expansão dos frutos, os valores de potencial matricial alcançaram de -31 a -32 kPa, respectivamente.

It was evaluated the effect of irrigation management on the production characteristics of coffee cultivar Acaiá MG-1474, planted in spacing of 3.00 m x 0.60 m, pruned in 2004, and irrigated by drip since the planting, in 1997. The experimental designed used was of randomized blocks with five treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of irrigation management strategies, applying or not applying controlled moisture deficit in layer of 0 to 0.4m, in dry seasons of the year: A = no irrigation (control), B = irrigation during all year considering the factor of water availability in the soil (f) equal to 0.75, C = irrigation during all year considering f = 0.25, D = irrigation during all year, but in January /February /March /July /October /November /December with f = 0.25 and April /May /June /August /September with f = 0.75, E = irrigation only during April /May /June /August /September with f = 0.25. From July /2005 to June /2007 the applied water depth was defined based on Class A pan evaporation (ECA) and the period from July/2007 to June/2008 based on readings of matric potential of soil obtained from Watermark® sensors. Each plot consisted of three rows with ten plants per row, considering as useful plot five plants of center line. The results indicated that the E irrigation management was the most suitable for technical reasons.Foi avaliado o efeito do manejo de irrigação nas características produtivas do cafeeiro da cultivar Acaiá MG-1474, plantado no espaçamento 3,00 m x 0,60 m, recepado em 2004 e irrigado por gotejamento desde o plantio, em 1997. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos utilizados constaram de estratégias de manejo de irrigação, aplicando ou não déficit controlado de umidade, na camada de 0 - 0,40m, nas épocas secas do ano, ou seja: A = Sem irrigação (testemunha); B = Irrigação o ano todo, considerando-se o fator de disponibilidade de água no solo (f) igual a 0,75; C = Irrigação o ano todo, considerando-se f = 0,25; D = Irrigação o ano todo, porém em jan. /fev. /mar. /jul. /out. /nov. /dez., com f = 0,25 e em abr. /maio /jun. /ago. /set. com f = 0,75; E = Irrigação somente nos meses de abr. /maio /jun. /ago. /set. com f = 0,25. No período de julho de 2005 a junho de 2007, a lâmina de água aplicada foi definida com base na evaporação do Tanque Classe A (ECA) e no período de julho de 2007 a julho de 2008, em leituras do potencial matricial do solo obtidas em sensores do tipo Watermark®. Cada parcela foi composta por três linhas de plantio, com 10 plantas por linha, considerando-se como parcela útil 5 plantas da linha central. Os resultados indicaram que o manejo de irrigação E foi o mais indicado por razões técnicas.

Ao utilizar o solo como forma de tratamento e de disposição final de águas residuárias de café (ARC) e essa como fonte de água e de nutrientes para os cafeeiros, solucionam-se problemas ambientais e diminuem-se os custos de produção para o cafeicultor. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos de diferentes doses de potássio aplicadas via ARC no crescimento vegetativo de cafeeiros (Coffea arabica L.), Catuaí' e Catucaí', em seu primeiro ano, bem como o incremento de potássio e a condutividade elétrica na solução do solo. O estudo foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Engenharia, na Universidade Federal de Lavras, no município de Lavras - MG. Os tratamentos foram definidos por diferentes doses de potássio (K+): 30 mg L-1; 65 mg L-1; 100 mg L-1; 135 mg L-1, aplicadas via ARC, e pela testemunha (água de irrigação e adubação convencional). ARC com concentrações até 135 mg L-1 de potássio contribui para o crescimento vegetativo do cafeeiro, especificamente, altura de planta e diâmetro do ramo ortotrópico, mostrando-se igualmente, ou melhor, que a água de irrigação e potássio por meio da adubação convencional. Além disso, o aumento na concentração de potássio do solo em todos os tratamentos não foi suficiente para aumentar a condutividade elétrica em níveis que possam afetar o crescimento da planta, no período avaliado.Using the soil as a form of treatment and final disposal for coffee wastewater(CW), considering its water and nutrient content to the coffee, solves environmental problems and reduces production costs for coffee growers. This research had the objective to evaluate the influence of different potassium levels from WC on the growth of (Coffea arabica L.), Catuaí' and Catucaí' coffee varieties, in their fist year, as well the potassium increase and electrical conductivity in the soil solution. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Engineering Department, of Universidade Federal de Lavras, in Lavras - MG, Brazil. The treatment levels were defined as: 30 mg L-1; 65 mg L-1; 100 mg L-1; 135 mg L-1 of potassium (K+), applied through CW and the control (irrigation water and conventional fertilization). Coffee processing wastewater with concentration up to 135 mg L-1 of potassium contributes to coffee growth, specifically, plant height and shoot diameter, showing to be equal or even better than irrigation water and potassium via conventional fertilizers. In addition, during the period evaluated the increase in soil potassium concentration was not enough to increase electrical conductivity to levels that could affect plant growth.

O presente estudo foi realizado no Pólo de Tecnologia em Pós-Colheita de Café, na Universidade Federal de Lavras - MG. Seu objetivo foi estudar a distribuição da temperatura e do teor de água na direção radial do secador rotativo. Para a realização do teste, foram usados, concomitantemente, dois secadores da marca Pinhalense, com capacidade de 5.000 kg cada; em um secador usou-se lenha e no outro GLP, como combustíveis para o aquecimento do ar. A medição da temperatura do ar de secagem e da massa de café foi feita por meio de termopares distribuídos em 18 pontos no secador. As leituras de todas as temperaturas, registradas em um indicador, foram feitas em intervalos de meia hora. A redução do teor de água foi acompanhada em nove pontos na massa de café. Observou-se que os valores da temperatura no plenum apresentaram menor oscilação na secagem quando se usou o GLP. Além disso, independentemente do tipo de combustível, foram observados gradientes máximos de até 25 °C na temperatura e três pontos percentuais no teor de água na direção radial, na seção central do secador, em razão dos maiores valores de pressão estática (637,84 Pa). De maneira geral, independentemente do combustível usado, o gradiente de temperatura observado longitudinalmente na massa de café foi bem menor do que na direção radial.The present study was accomplished in the "Pólo de Tecnologia em Pós-Colheita de Café", at the "Universidade Federal de Lavras", MG, Brazil. Its objective was to investigate the distribution of temperature and moisture content in the radial direction of the rotary dryer. For the test accomplishment, two dryers of the Pinhalense mark were used concomitantly with a 5,000 kg capacity. In a dryer, firewood was used and in the other GLP, as fuels for air heating. The air drying and coffee mass temperature were determined by means of thermocouples distributed on eighteen ends of the dryer. The readings of all the temperatures recorded on the dial were done every half an hour. Moisture content loss was followed in nine points in coffee mass. It was found that the values of temperature in the plenum presented less oscillation in the drying which used GLP. Furthermore, regardless the sort of fuel, there were found maximum temperature gradient of 20 °C and three percents points of moisture content in the radial direction in central section, as consequence of the higher values of static pressure (637.84 Pa) in the plenum observed in this section. Regardless the kind of fuel, the temperature gradient measured in the longitudinal sense of the coffee mass was substantially less in the radial direction.
