The integral development of agriculture and tourism heavily depends on natural resources, especially agricultural resources, and it also may contribute to the sustainability of agriculture. The sustainability of agriculture is usually measured by the agricultural eco-efficiency. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of the agriculture and tourism integration on agricultural eco-efficiency, so as to reflect the role of the agriculture and tourism integration on promoting agricultural sustainability. Applying panel data of 19 provinces in Yangtze River Basin and Yellow River Basin in China from 2008 to 2019, this paper uses a PSTR model to demonstrate the impact of agriculture and tourism integration on agricultural eco-efficiency and its mechanisms. It is found that in the study area, the integration of agriculture and tourism can contribute to improvements in agricultural eco-efficiency, and when levels of integration are high, the promotional effect is enhanced. However, impacts vary among different regions to some extent. In terms of influencing mechanisms, inputs of agricultural labor, sown crop area, effective irrigation area and other factors decrease with continuous improvements of integration. The input of pesticides, fertilizers and other factors does not decrease in the initial stage of integration but undergoes a rapid decrease after crossing a threshold value. And it demonstrates that the integration of agriculture and tourism is beneficial for improving the agricultural eco-efficiency, so that it will contribute to agricultural sustainability. Meanwhile, this paper offers a new research perspective for discovering effects of agriculture and tourism integration, providing implications for formulating regional policies for the integration. In Ethiopia, on-farm agrobiodiversity and the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) play a key role in building smallholders' resilience. However, the impact of PSNP on on-farm agrobiodiversity is not yet well investigated. In this paper, we develop an analytical framework that links PSNP participation to on-farm agrobiodiversity. Both diverse farming systems and PSNP require labour inputs while providing income stabilization, which might result in a negative relationship between the two. Conversely, higher income from PSNP might allow farmers to increase their long-term on-farm investments, as opposed to the strategies oriented toward the highest immediate profit or calorie intake outcome. We base our empirical analysis on the World Bank's Ethiopian Socioeconomic Survey, a panel dataset encompassing nearly 3000 respondents and a Tobit model, based on Difference-in-Difference and the Propensity-Score Matching methods. We find that Ethiopia's PSNP has a negative impact on farm labour input, both in terms of labour intensity and duration. Furthermore, our results show that participation in the program is associated, on average, with lower on-farm crop diversity. We conclude that the PSNP participation may be crowding-out production stabilizing farming activities, such as intercropping or cover cropping, that are more labour intensive. Our findings call for embedding tools in the new phase of the PSNP (2021–2025) that could incentivise on-farm resilience-oriented investments, in particular leading to higher crop diversification. The coordinated development of agriculture and tourism is very important. On the basis of the index system of the predecessors, the development effect index after the integration of the subsystems is added, so as to construct the evaluation index system of the integrated development of agriculture and tourism in Inner Mongolia. The entropy weight method is used to set the weight value for each index, and the panel data from 2001 to 2019 collected from the Inner Mongolia Statistical Yearbook and the China Yearbook are analyzed with the coupled coordination degree model. The research results show that the development of agriculture and tourism in Inner Mongolia has been highly coupled since 2004; it has been reluctantly coordinated from 2007 until 2019 to achieve high-quality coordination; from 2001 to 2011, the development of tourism lagged behind the development of agriculture, while after 2012, the development of agriculture has been lagging behind the tourism industry. Wang (Asia Pac J Tour Res 24(6):550–562, 2019), Li and Du (Sustainability 13(10), 2021) had got similar conclusions. The article puts forward suggestions from two aspects. On the one hand, using the tourism as the trigger for the development of agriculture tourism by developing more agricultural-related tourism products so as to fully tap the tourism attributes of agriculture. The marketing of tourism products should be consciously inclined to agriculture; on the other hand, the promoting the development of tourism can be realized by adopting modern agriculture, which includes cultivating new types of large agricultural households, supporting the development of large and medium-sized farms, promoting the development of green agriculture and industrialized and three-dimensional agriculture. The modern agriculture can be deeply integrated with the tourism industry, thereby promoting the development of tourism. The research results and suggestions put forward in this paper have certain reference significance for the coordinated development of agriculture and tourism in Inner Mongolia and Southeast Asia. Agricultural carbon emission reduction is inseparable from discussions about government systems, especially in countries with distinctive institutional arrangements such as China. Environmental regulation may influence the impact of environmental decentralisation on agricultural carbon intensity. Using panel data from 30 provinces in mainland China from 2000 to 2015, this paper depicts the spatiotemporal pattern and dynamic evolution of environmental decentralisation, environmental regulation, and agricultural carbon intensity. It uses the spatial Durbin model to empirically study the internal connections between the three. The empirical results show that the enhancement of environmental decentralisation, environmental administrative decentralisation, environmental supervision decentralisation, and environmental monitoring decentralisation is not conducive to reducing agricultural carbon intensity. The results also show that the enhancement of the intensity of environmental regulation of "terminal governance type" and "front-end governance type" is conducive to reducing agricultural carbon intensity, but this effect has a negative "space spillover" phenomenon. Other findings are as follows: (1) the enhancement of the two types of environmental regulation intensity is conducive to changing the impact of environmental decentralisation on agricultural carbon intensity from a "grabbing-hand" to a "helping-hand"; (2) compared with balanced grain-producing and marketing areas and major grain-marketing areas, environmental decentralisation and two types of environmental regulations have a greater negative impact on the agricultural carbon intensity of major grain-producing areas. Therefore, the central government should change how it evaluates political performance; accelerate the construction of a diversified performance evaluation system; increase the weight of low-carbon, green, and other indicators that reflect the friendly development of agriculture in the system; and encourage local governments to adjust the direction of agricultural production. Hybrid renewable energy sources are sustainable and eco-friendly and challenge the alternative sources of conventional energy production facilities. Pakistan's present energy dilemma is a serious impediment to its economic progress. This paper proposes a techno-economic analysis of commercial-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems for commercial agricultural farms in Punjab, Pakistan. A survey was conducted to gather the load data of the farms from major cities of north, center, and south Punjab. For the PV system design, the K-means approach was used to cluster data from 93 farmers into nine clusters with similar electrical consumption. A complete technical, economic, and environmental study is undertaken of the PV systems deployed in five selected cities. The most practical locations are Attock and Multan, which have the lowest Levelized Cost of Energy at 5.52 and 5.37 cents/kWh, respectively. PV installations are nevertheless technically, economically, and environmentally feasible for all cities. Throughout its lifespan, the planned PV system has the potential for Faisalabad and Chiniot to minimize 154 metric tons of emissions, resulting in a greener environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural manufacturers (abbreviation: Manufacturers) are conventionally committed to carbon emission reductions under government subsidies to achieve carbon neutrality goals, such as manufacturer subsidies and consumer subsidies. In addition, with the increase in consumers' low-carbon preferences, a growing number of retailers exert sales efforts to promote carbon emission reduction. In this paper, we apply a game theory approach and focus on investigating how sales effort and different government subsidies promote manufacturers' carbon emission reductions. We draw several important conclusions: First, we find that government subsidies are not always conducive to promoting carbon emissions reductions. Second, we show that consumer subsidies impose a higher (lower) financial burden on the government than manufacturer subsidies when carbon abatement costs are above (below) a threshold. Furthermore, retailers are preferable to impose sales effort under consumer subsidies when the cost of sales effort is higher. Third, the results suggest that manufacturer subsidies are more conducive to maximizing social welfare when consumer low-carbon preferences are small in the presence of retailer-imposed sales effort. The Filipino agricultural sector is exposed to multiple climatic, economic, and social risks that will likely intensify in the near future. Building agroecological resilience has been proposed to protect small-scale farmers' livelihoods and improve food security in the context of (unexpected) shocks and disruptions, and slow system changes such as climate change. This paper argues that commons-based seed production, based on collective management and ownership of seeds and varieties, can play a central role in building resilience capacities in smallholder communities. I explore this by applying an indicator-based framework to assess the contribution of the Filipino farmer network Magsasaka at Siyentipiko para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikultura (MASIPAG) to agroecological resilience. I find that the networks' commons-based seed governance builds agroecological resilience in various ways. By equipping small-scale farmers with the tools to regain control over seed production and breeding, they become stewards of an actively evolving collection of varieties. The in situ maintenance and development of traditional, open-pollinated varieties and a network of diversified trial and backup farms build up buffering capacities and foster agrobiodiversity and local adaptation. A focus on regionally available natural resources reduces vulnerabilities to external factors. Adaptive capacities are strengthened through a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness achieved by self-organization and polycentric organizational structures. Broad participation, shared learning and spaces for experimentation support the development of farmers' capacities to respond to diverse challenges. In many mining communities in the developing world, agricultural livelihoods are gradually being lost. These livelihood changes are fueled by emerging foreign investments into the local mining sector; unclear regulatory frameworks and mining laws; as well as perceived compromised regulatory systems currently in operation. With continuous foreign investments and complexities of local institutions, these local mining industries may eventually lessen the importance of agricultural livelihoods. This paper explores the perceived and actual effects of artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) of gold on farming and food production in the Akyem Abuakwa traditional area in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Adopting a case approach, the study used multiple qualitative and participatory methods, including interviews of selected farmers, small-scale miners and opinion leaders; focus group discussions with affected farmers and ASM workers; institutional consultations and field visits to affected farms and mining sites were all used in gathering empirical evidence. The paper brings out three revelations. Firstly, there are unclear power dynamics that seek to marginalize farmers from their farms and turn them into gold mining sites. Secondly, the paper reveals that illegal small-scale gold mining activities that take place with the knowledge of farmers but sometimes supported by traditional and customary power structures. Lastly, some farmers are forced into illegal and/or ASM by declining them some essential agricultural and financial gains they are supposed to receive. The paper makes a case for the effective regulation of ASM activities and a re-examination of the declining agricultural industry, especially in the study area and in Ghana at large. Water resources are the source of life for people to survive, especially in agriculture. Water resources provide necessary support for agricultural economic development and irrigation management. Using the panel data from 2013 to 2019, this paper uses the coupled coordination model to explore the degree of synergy between agricultural water resources efficiency (AWRE) and agricultural economic development level (AEDL), and analyzes the spatial correlation of coupling coordination degree (CCD) between the AWRE and AEDL, and further predicts the relationship between the two. The results are as follows: (1) There are superb variations in the CCD among provinces, and the diploma of coordination is greater in the south than in the north; (2) In the spatial correlation pattern, high–high agglomeration areas exhibit an growing trend, and the variety of low–low agglomeration areas is small; and (3) Through the prediction, it is found that in the further, the CCD will show a trend of slow increase in future. The state of India was situated on fertile land and river deltas with appropriate agricultural land. In 2019, agricultural fields, primarily cropland, occupy more than 40% of the country's total surface area. Moreover, agricultural industry revenues less than 3% of the country's Gross Provincial Product (GPP). While manufacturing has become the country's major financial activity, accounting countries represent half of GPP's revenues. The objective of the study is to find a way to improve the financial profitability and efficiency of farming supply chain networks as follows: (1) Fixation of national-level targets for zonal-level groups information after assessment and forecasts that affect production and distribution of agriculture. (2) Producers risk can be reduced by directing people to multiple factory and industrialization options based on market assessment. (3) Insurance costs and reduction of bank borrowing by standardizing the connection between bankers and producers using the structure to centralise land information. (4), Stabilize the agricultural sector by looking at nearby potential destinations for production and regulation of the Public Distribution System (PDS) flow for the security stock. The economic development level of the Yangtze River Economic Belt is relatively high, and the modern agricultural production has brought serious pressure to the agricultural ecological environment. At present, there is no research on the sustainable status of agroecosystem in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, based on the emergy theory, this paper analyzes and evaluates the input–output structure and sustainable status of the Yangtze River Economic Belt by calculating the input–output factors and relevant emergy indexes from 2010 to 2018. The results show that the total input and output emergy of the Yangtze River Economic Belt shows an upward trend from 2010 to 2018. The input of non-renewable industrial auxiliary emergy is too high which has been more than 80%, and the structure of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery industry is unreasonable, which makes the net emergy yield rate of the system very low, its value was only 0.23 in 2018, far less than 1, and the agroecosystem is in an unsustainable state. Except for Shanghai, most provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt are in an unsustainable state, and the status of the agricultural ecological environment is not optimistic. From 2010 to 2018, the overall ecological environment of the agricultural ecosystem in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is not optimistic. Among them, the most affected agricultural ecosystem's sustainable development index is the cash-crop area, total population, and agricultural fixed asset investment. Relevant departments and agricultural practitioners need to change the resource input structure of the agricultural ecosystem, reduce the dependence on industrial auxiliary energy, improve resource utilization efficiency, adjust the industrial structure of agricultural output and increase the production of high-emergy products, to realize sustainable development of the agricultural ecosystem. Current climate issues pose a challenge to green development, so it is important to study the relationship between climate change and agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP). This paper constructs a panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model using panel data from 2005 to 2019 in China to evaluate the relationship between climate change and agricultural green total factor productivity. Selecting agricultural operation scale, agricultural premium and green finance index as transfer variables, the PSTR model is constructed, respectively. The empirical results show that the impacts of different types of climate change on AGTFP have significant nonlinear characteristics. Smaller and larger agricultural operation scales can mitigate the negative impact of sunshine impact on AGTFP. Higher agricultural premiums and lower or higher green finance index can mitigate the negative impact of temperature shock and sunshine shock on AGTFP. Based on the research results, we put forward policy recommendations to encourage the expansion of agricultural operation scale, promote agricultural insurance and promote the construction of a green financial system. This paper explores agro-ecological implications of climate change and gendered adaptations in Northern Ghana. Drawing on feminist political ecology, sequential mix-method design was used to collect socio-economic and livelihood data through a survey of 300 smallholder farmers. Paired sample t test, simple linear regression and descriptive statistics were used to determined yield variation, gendered perception, and adaptive capacities to climate change. Three focus group discussions and 15 key informant interviews were conducted to validate the survey results. Findings show that climate change has threatened the sustainability of local livelihoods with a significant drop in food production over the last 15 years. Adaptation to climate change in the study area is polarized by gender, affecting productivity. This is because men perceive climate change and its impacts differently from women. Men were likely to adapt changing methods of farming and improvement in storage capacity, while women were likely to adapt migration and livelihood diversification. Policy toward building resilience to the impacts of climate change should recognize and adopt these gender adaptive capacities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to identify the drivers and barriers of on-farm adoption of renewable energy systems (RES) in Spain and to determine how the existing mix of policies (subsidies, regulation and communication) affected the decisions of the farmers. The analysis is based on the results of a national survey that was completed by 719 farmers, representing the main types of farms and production regions. Statistically significant correlations have been observed between the probability of on-farm RES adoption and variables such as the use of contract farming, interest in new technologies and risk tolerance. Findings suggest that the diffusion of on-farm RES was at an early stage. Farmers are hesitant to adopt RES because the level of economic and regulatory uncertainty is perceived as too high in relation to the return and payback time typical of RES investments. Tailored business models and financing solutions should be implemented and promoted to overcome the described issues. Furthermore, relevant and reliable information should be available within farmers' most common professional networks such as cooperatives and farmers' associations. Sustainability assessment of agricultural system is vital to ensure improvements in agricultural sustainability abilities. Aiming at the comprehensive evaluation of agricultural sustainability, this paper builds an input and output indicator system, from the security–economy–society–ecology dimension. Then, based on super-efficiency slack-based model and coupling model, an integration model is developed and employed to measure the regional agricultural sustainability in 30 Chinese provinces in 2017. The major findings are as follows. First, significant regional disparities are found across the provinces, Beijing and Tianjin have the highest agricultural sustainability efficiencies at 0.902 and 0.957, respectively, and Xinjiang and Gansu only achieve 0.543 and 0.539, respectively. Second, China's eastern regions had the best agricultural sustainability efficiencies, followed by the central regions and the western regions. The agro-food system needs a genuine sustainability transition to achieve sustainable food and nutrition security in the face of climate change, population growth, ecosystem degradation and increasing resource scarcity. Agro-food sustainability transitions refer to transformation processes needed to move towards sustainable agriculture and food systems. There is a broad range of theoretical and conceptual frameworks that have been used to understand and promote transition towards sustainability. These include the multi-level perspective (MLP) on socio-technical transitions, transition management (TM), strategic niche management (SNM), technological innovation system (TIS) and social practice approach (SPA). The paper analyses the use of these heuristic frameworks in research on agro-food sustainability transitions. A search carried out in March 2018 on Scopus yielded 791 documents, and 127 research articles underwent a systematic review. Results show that more than three-fifths of research papers dealing with sustainability transitions in agriculture, food processing, distribution and consumption use at least one of the five heuristic frameworks (MLP, TM, SNM, TIS and SPA). The MLP is the most prominent framework in research on agro-food sustainability transitions, followed by TM, SPA, SNM and then TIS. Nevertheless, MLP is increasingly complemented with frameworks that focus on human-related and social factors (SPA), management and governance (TM, SNM) or agency and interactions between actors (TIS) in sustainability transitions processes. This paper investigates the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypotheses for agriculture. The impact of precipitations on soil CO2 emissions is incorporated in the EKC hypothesis to assess the so-called "Birch effect phenomenon." Through an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bound test modeling and using annual data from 1975 to 2014, we examine the short- and long-term relationships between net agricultural values added per rural capita, energy consumption, precipitation and agricultural CO2 emissions in Tunisian agriculture. We then used the nonlinear version of ARDL (NARDL) to examine the asymmetric effect of precipitations on CO2 emissions. The EKC assumption is validated in favor of the agricultural sector in both short and long-run associations, suggesting the adoption of cleaner production practices. The results also indicate that precipitation increases soil CO2 emissions in the short-term as well as in the long-term, confirming the Birch effect phenomenon and reflecting the specificity of the Tunisian climate-ecosystem. The asymmetric findings provide evidence of different CO2 emissions response to negative and positive shocks of precipitations in terms of magnitude, whereas the energy use in agriculture is found not to affect CO2 emissions when switching from linear to a nonlinear model. As recommendations, promoting the agricultural productivity and preserving farmland in Tunisia should be among the main actions for any agricultural policy to improve economic growth and to achieve environmental sustainability. The objective of this paper is to develop a framework to overcome problems of soil nutrient legacies and poor quality of water bodies raised by agricultural practices. A multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) approach is proposed to evaluate different alternatives to help to define sustainable vineyard agricultural solutions. The methodology developed was applied to a basin in the north-central part of Portugal, the São Lourenço basin. The land cover of the basin consists predominantly of vines. A number of alternatives based on different vineyard management practices and land use are evaluated against environmental and socioeconomic criteria by means of the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model and considering information included in some databases. The preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE) outranking method is used to rank the alternatives and to evaluate weight stability intervals assigned to criteria. A supplementary analysis is performed by a different MCDA method (technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS)), belonging to the family of compensatory methods, to provide additional insights to the decision makers. The results show the best and the worst alternatives for vineyard agricultural practices according to the weights assigned to the criteria. The sensitivity analysis of the weights indicated most stable ranking cases and the criterion that presents the narrow stability intervals. This work offers the opportunity to discuss comparisons between different types of agricultural practices and give insights for future developments of other areas where intensive vineyard cultivation is implemented. Economic development may have distinct implications for the environment based on gender-differentiated employment in various sectors of the economy. This is the first major attempt to incorporate gender in environmental modeling using sector-wise female employment status and gender parity index. In this study, we investigate the environment-gender nexus through the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in 36 Asian countries for the period 1991–2017 by panel data estimations. We find in all estimations through panel FMOLS that (a) per capita GDP positively affects CO2 emissions and (b) per capita CO2 is affected by per capita GDP squared negatively, thus confirming EKC for panel Asian data with 971 observations. The estimations of the paper also confirm the EKC hypothesis through panel data models in which GDP and GDP squared variables. Our findings suggest male and female labor market participation impacts the environment differently, particularly in the agricultural sectors. We also find that an increased schooling ratio (gender parity index) negatively impacts environmental degradation. The findings of the present study are expected to give insights into policymakers for understanding the theoretical and statistical association between environmental quality and male/female labor force in agricultural and industrial sectors for 36 Asian countries. Drought has become a dominant climate risk both around the world and in Europe, adding to the already challenging task of farming and governing the agricultural sector under climate change. Drought risk management is extremely complex. Apart from irrigation, most drought risk management options have more than one goal and may potentially have negative trade-offs with other risk management objectives. Moreover, government regulations and market mechanisms influence farmers' decision-making. However, previous studies, both in developed and in developing countries, have predominantly focused on attitudinal and structural influencing factors on farmers' risk management behavior. In this paper, we comprehensively investigate farmers' decision spaces with respect to drought risk management. We address two applied research questions: (1) What are farmers' preferred drought risk management measures? (2) From a farmer's perspective, what are the dominant factors influencing drought risk management decisions? We find that farmers primarily think of production-based rather than financial measures with respect to drought risk management. At the same time, natural and technical constraints and enabling factors dominate their mental decision space, followed by public and private institutional aspects. This research provides a basis for the design of integrated and holistic drought risk management policy and the drought risk governance needed for sustainable use of land and water resources such as needed to address systemic risks and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, we introduce a novel approach using mental models extracted from interviews to explore cognitive representations of farmers' decision spaces. Since the introduction of the sustainability challenge, scientists disagree over the interpretation of the term 'sustainability.' Weak and strong sustainability are the two main interpretations of sustainability, which are opposing each other. Some researchers stated that the interpretation of the term depends on the context; others disagree pointing out that it always implies the meaning of continuation. The term 'sustainability' can be used as attribute, which adds a certain characteristic to the noun. If something can be attributed as being sustainable, it can also be unsustainable. The sustainability challenge consists of shifting from the current unsustainable towards a sustainable system. This paper outlines that the weak sustainability term is illegitimate, as it leads to a contradiction with the acknowledged assumption that the current state is unsustainable. This contradiction is revealed through an analysis of the occurrence of decoupling in agriculture: Agricultural land use could be decoupled from agricultural production, but only with the trade-off of massive increases in fertilizer, pesticide, energy and water usage. This paper outlines an inherent inconsistency within the ongoing discussion about the interpretation of sustainability. This paper describes the informal groundwater market existing in the urban-peri-urban interface of Chennai. The private water tanker suppliers and packaged water industries utilize the land and water resources of the peri-urban villages. Thus, the groundwater sources in peri-urban areas play a significant role in meeting the growing urban demand. The villages that are experiencing the groundwater market are highly influenced by the urbanization and its related activities, due to their proximity to the city. The transfer of groundwater from the peri-urban villages not only deprives the peri-urban areas of their water rights but also leads to environmental damage. Agriculture declined in the water marketed villages in the range of 20-95 per cent during 1990-2007. The pre-monsoon and post-monsoon groundwater level fluctuation varied from 2-6 m to 0-5 m, respectively, during 1971-2007. The declining trend of the groundwater table and agriculture is highly significant in the water marketing villages. Moreover, the present groundwater quality is also in a susceptible state due to over extraction. Hence, strengthening the legal and institutional framework to ensure an equitable access to water for both urban and peri-urban areas is urgently required. This paper also describes the characteristics of the groundwater transfer, quantification of the marketed water, the role of the existing regulatory framework, and the institutional mechanisms. Many stakeholder's meeting and focus group discussions have been conducted in the villages under study for understanding the socio-economic implications of the water market. Rapid change in climate is set to alter the delicate balance that exists between man and nature. It is more so for the region which are ecologically fragile. The literature to this effect points out that the poorest countries and communities are likely to suffer the most because of their geographic locations, low income and low institutional capacity, as well as their greater reliance on climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture. Even if climate mitigations plans are implemented properly there will be some degree of warming due to inertia of emissions already released. As such, there is a strong consensus about the need of adaptation to changing climatic conditions. Adaptation is believed to enhance the resilience against increasing climate variability. In this backdrop, the objective of the present paper is, therefore, to systematically and critically review the existing literature on the impacts of climate change and choice of adaptations across countries and draw insights for suggesting a comprehensive policy framework particularly for developing countries in this regard. The paper finds that the role of government and civil society is crucial for enabling efficient adaptation methods. Development policies and programs having synergy effect with climate change initiatives help adapt with the changing climate better. However, the availability of clean technology in developing countries will play the decisive role in controlling their growth rate of emission. Vietnamese rural mountains are undergoing a significant transformation process in agriculture-based economy nowadays. A challenge facing ethnic minorities is identifying more appropriate way of life to cope with unpredictable risks associated with agriculture. This paper deals with livelihood diversification by the Dzao, an indigenous ethnic minority group in the Vietnamese Northern Mountains. One hundred and six Dzao households from 11 villages are surveyed with a systematic random sampling. The Simpson diversity index and the Average Agricultural Livelihood Diversification Index are used to measure the livelihood diversification of villages. Eighteen survey questions are developed from six determinants of livelihood diversification such as seasonality, risk strategies, labor markets, credit market failures, asset strategies and coping behavior and adaptation. The results show that livelihood diversification aligns Dzao farmers' goals to the short-term economic feasibility and long-term sustainability. Farmers diversify their livelihood by combining livelihood strategies for agricultural intensification, agricultural extensification and migration. Diversification should range from a temporary change in the household livelihood portfolio (occasional diversification) to a deliberate attempt to optimize the household capacity taking advantage of opportunities and coping with unexpected constraints (strategic diversification). How farmers perceive climate change is linked to whether they are responding and adapting to it. However, often this perception does not correspond with what actually happens. Based on a search of empirical studies carried out in Africa and Asia, this paper analyzes two factors that can influence farmers' perception regarding climate change: expected utility maximization and availability heuristic. While expected utility maximization refers to an expected change in farmers' well-being, the availability heuristic is a mental shortcut based on the memory of occurrence of events. Generally, empirical studies show that farmers' perceptions are aligning with meteorological records regarding an increase in temperature. However, while there are no significant variations in rainfall trends, farmers perceive a reduction in rainfall in the last few years. The recent increase in drought frequency and severity may cause this divergence, because it affects farmers' well-being, and extreme droughts have a central position in peoples' memory. In this context, our findings suggest that farmers' perceptions are influenced by economic and psychological issues. Policymakers, extension workers and developers of climate projects need to pay attention to farm and farmers' characteristics in order to develop mitigation and/or adaptation practices regarding climate change. Can development occur without running down natural resources in an unsustainable way? The concept of natural capital offers a way for those with divergent views (ecologists and economists for example) to discuss this difficult question. Four aspects are examined in detail. First, the role of institutions in facilitating sustainable development is discussed, with examples from forestry. Then examples from (eco)tourism illustrate the potential – and limits – of applicability of the concept. Measurement issues for natural capital are then considered in detail. Finally, the concept is applied to agricultural strategy in fragile lands, where the tradeoff between the environment and development is likely to be most severe. The Circular Economy is now the focus of attention in various sectors, and many international organisations, such as FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO, are showing great interest in the issue (FAO, 2021). In the 2030 agenda published by the UN in 2015, specifically SDG 2 says 'End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture'. Hence, research on the application of Circular Economy methods in agriculture has become increasingly relevant. The main objective of this study was to analyse the evolution of this line of research and identify current trends linking Circular Economy and Agriculture and identify the drivers in this area of study. A bibliometric analysis of the articles produced in the period 2005–2020 was therefore carried out. The results show, in an irrefutable manner, that this topic is increasingly gaining visibility and relevance, that coincides with the establishment of the SDGs. The analysis of the key words highlighted three main lines of research: sustainability and sustainable development, as the eco-sustainable management of agricultural processes; bioenergy, produced from waste or agricultural production; life-cycle assessment, methods for calculating the environmental and health impacts of agricultural production processes. Interest in the Circular Economy depends on the awareness on the topic shown by each country. This is also reflected in the research. The regions where studies on Circular Economy and Agriculture are mainly carried out are Europe, Asia, North and South America, while Russia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania still suffer from a certain gap. The situation of studies limited to Circular Economy applied to organic agriculture was also briefly analysed, and it was pointed out that in recent years many researchers have turned towards this field of research. Due to over exploitation of groundwater, there is a drastic decrease in groundwater level and its quality. The groundwater samples have been analysed to estimate its aptness for domestic and agricultural in Sivakasi Taluk industrial areas. In the course of post monsoon and summer of 2020, twenty two samples have been collected from the research area. The groundwater samples were examined for various parameters like pH, EC, TDS, TA, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, Cl−, SO4−, HCO3−, F−, DO and samples were compared with BIS, WHO and ICMR standards. It is inferred through results that EC and TDS values were spiked up due to excess presence of Cl−, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, F− and NO3− present in water samples near the industrial areas and natural rock formation. The water samples were evaluated for their suitability for irrigation and were assessed by SAR, % Na, Kelly's ratio and MH, USSL diagram shows majority of the samples are apt for agricultural. Piper plot indicates that majority of the collected samples fall under the Na–Cl category thereafter by Mg- HCO3- Cl, Ca–Mg–Cl and Na + K –Cl types and this infers anthropogenic influences. Gibb's plot shows that the collected samples fall under evaporation dominion field followed by rock-water dominion field of the two seasons. Climate change in developing nations has become a severe obstacle to extensive land productivity. Farmer's resilience to climate change impact can be boosted via adaptation measures. Smallholder farmers' expertise, however, can be fragmented and inconsistent, especially in times of climatic stress. It is worth mentioning that social networks play a part in how farmers decide how to adapt. Formal and informal social ties are the categories we use to categorize social networks. Using primary data obtained from banana growers on the island of Ngazidja in the Comoros archipelago, this study need to analyze the variable effects of social ties on farmers' adaptation decisions and further assess the impact of adaptation strategies on land productivity under climate change. According to the findings, less than 32% of banana growers used adaptation measures to lessen the effects of climate change on agricultural practices. Banana producers favored replanting trees, boosting sucker reduction, improving irrigation, and mixing crops. Farmers applied adaptation tactics at a higher rate when they were members of agricultural cooperatives and connected to sellers of agricultural inputs. The connection to local farmers, on the other hand, prevented farmers from taking proactive measures to counteract climate change. We also revealed that banana producers' land production increased dramatically due to adaptation measures. These results illustrate the significance of smallholder farmers' various social connections when formulating a policy package to improve land productivity and increase their responses to climate change. Energy use analysis and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are among the most important aspects regarding the sustainability performance of a farming system. The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact, in terms of energy consumption and GHG emissions in thirty vineyards located on Crete, Greece, and deliver a digital, decision support tool (DST). A simplified life cycle approach was used to collect data from the vineyards up to farm gate, located in the top wine-producing Cretan municipalities, regarding farming practices, inputs, and yield for a 2-year period. Sum energy and non-renewable energy intensity and efficiency were calculated. GHG emissions were estimated in terms of CO2 equivalents, following IPCC methodology, while the emissions intensity is also reported. Fossil fuels consumed by machinery for weed management, transportation, soil management, pest control, and synthetic fertilizers were the practices found to be accountable for the higher energy consumption. Synthetic fertilizers and fossil fuel consumption were the main sources of GHG emissions, followed by burning of the pruning residues. Omitting burning pruning residues, reducing tillage intensity, and replacing mechanical weed management are highlighted as the main practices that can improve the sustainability of viticulture on Crete. Making use of the collected data, a crop-specific DST, named "ECO2VINE", for calculating a vineyard's energy use and GHG emissions was developed, validated, and made publicly available. Diseases and pests are a growing threat to small and large banana farmers and can cause catastrophic losses. Diseases affect all parts of the plant and are caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses. Although their impact is generally less devastating, pests, mainly insects and nematodes, are also significant factors. For better management of these diseases and pests, several technologies and or agroecological practices are often used by small farmers but are not often known or disseminated. Here, we did a meta-analysis combined with a review to describe banana diseases and pests as well as agroecological methods for their management. On the basis of the meta-analysis, 11 main bananas pests and diseases have been identified. Depending on the importance of their management by agroecological methods, Mycosphaerella fijiensis was most studied here (Z-value = 0.48), followed by the nematodes Radopholus similis (Z-value = 0.32) and Helicotylenchus multicinctus (Z-value = 0.32). The insect pests Erionota thrax (Z-value = 0.28), Cosmopolites sordidus (Z-value = 0.23) and Polytus mellerborgi (Z-value = 0.22) were also widely studied. Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) was moderately studied (Z-value = 0.26). There was a significant positive response of pest and disease to agroecological practices / technologies. Agricultural technologies involving the use of predators to control pests and the use of biopesticides were the most demonstrated in studies. Agriculture is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Changes in precipitation and temperature patterns will result in long-term declines in production and short-term crop failures. These short- and long-run impacts are projected to be particularly severe in developing countries because of high exposure to climate change impacts and dependence on rain-fed agriculture. To overcome the challenges of a changing climate on agricultural production in West Africa, farmers implement a range of adaptation strategies. Using a systematic review of spatial–temporal empirical literature published on climate change adaptation in the West African ecological region and data collected from semi-structure interviews to farmers, we identified adaptation strategies in West Africa and explored their efficiency computing their cost–benefit ratio to examine farmers' private returns per dollar spent. Our results show that 91 adaptation strategies are employed by farmers in the sub-region, classified into six categories: cultural practices, forest management strategies, land management practices, water management strategies, risk management strategies and the use of improved technologies. Our results show that planting of trees, increased use of fertilizers, use of resistant varieties, mixed farming and crop diversification are the strategies that generate the highest returns, with highest annual mean net benefits. Mulching was also found a financial attractive as it generates the greatest returns per dollar spent ($3.2) and internal rate of return due to its low associated cost. The adaptation options that generate net mean annual losses were water harvesting, erosion control and making of big mounds. In a scenario with a 10% annual increase in annual benefits and costs over a period of five years, all the adaptation strategies, apart from water harvesting, will yield positive net present value benefits for the farmers. Since any climate change adaptation will inevitably have heterogenous financial implications to farmers, result from this study sheds light on farmers' private incentives to embark on adaptation strategies and provides information needed for decision support on adaptation measures choice selection, policy and planning across the sub region with relevance to other areas. Shrinking agricultural land sizes and multiplied food demand have prompted overuse of fertilizers in agriculture, leading to a series of environmental repercussions worsening day after day. In the contemporary scenario, concerns over the magnitude of soil destruction and plant health have shifted the scientific community's attention toward sustainable agricultural practices, including organic farming and the use of organic fertilizers like vermicompost (VC), animal manure, etc. A factorial study using a randomized block design was conducted in the field to appraise the potential of fertilizer and irrigation water on the biochemical and growth responses of Abelmoschus esculentus using different doses of VCs along with and without recommended doses of NPK. All the biochemical analyses were performed at 45 and 65 DAG (days after germination). At both ages, combination of 3-ton ha−1 vermicompost + recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer (120:60:60 kg ha−1) + irrigation water treatments (T5) had the highest protein, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and phenol content and less lipid peroxidation as compared to control (144.28%, 84.21%, 83%, 224.2% and -60.43%, respectively). Also, T5 treatment showed a noticeable increase in the photosynthetic pigments level and reduced heavy metal content in fruits of the test plant at maturity. Statistical analyses, including PCA, Pearson correlation matrix, and MANOVA (p < 0.05), showed that appropriate dosing of VC together with inorganic fertilizer not only augments plant growth and yield, but also helps in reducing the transport of metals to different plant parts, mitigating food chain contamination. However, overdosing on fertilizers could negatively impact the plant's growth and yield. This research discusses the impact of climate change on inflation, as well as the limitations of existing econometric models in incorporating multiple climate-related variables in determining inflation. To address this limitation, the study introduces the climate condition index (CCI) for 153 countries covering the 1901–2021 period to investigate the relationship between climate and agricultural inflation. This index represents a weighted average of various climate variables, including cloud coverage, temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure, and wet day frequency. The weights are the long-term cointegration coefficients of the climate variables concerning the Agricultural Producer Price Index (APPI), which were obtained from separate vector error correction models (VECMs) constructed for each country. The study shows that climate change has a significant impact on agricultural prices globally, as evidenced by a median Granger causality p-value of 0.036 across 153 countries (CCI Granger causing APPI in 127 countries with a 90% confidence interval). The results align with panel vector autoregression and country-specific VECMs impulse responses, which indicate that climate conditions negatively impact agriculture in 142 countries, while 11 countries gain from climate change. The study's overall results suggest that climate change substantially affects agriculture globally. In light of the significant economic reliance on agricultural production, it is advisable for governments to consider the issue from the perspective of sustainable growth, while central banks should tackle it with a focus on the inflationary implications through green quantitative easing. The study examined the impact of social, demographic, and economic factors on the economic empowerment of rural women in agricultural activities in Ethiopia's Dire Dawa region, using a mixed-methods research approach. The research team collected data from a sample of 419 women engaged in agricultural activities and used the proportional odds model and the partial proportional odds model to identify the factors associated with economic empowerment. The study found that age, property ownership, and education and training had a negative effect, while social networks and media had a positive effect on economic empowerment. The results also showed that women aged 40 and above had a lower likelihood of being economically empowered and lack of property ownership and limited contact with extension agents hurt economic empowerment. The study recommended improving women's access to credit, land ownership, and training opportunities to promote gender equity and women's economic empowerment in the agricultural sector in Ethiopia. This study contributes to the literature by using a mixed-methods approach that integrated qualitative data with quantitative data, which has not been used before in Ethiopia. The findings provide important implications for policymakers and development practitioners in promoting gender equity and women's economic empowerment in the agricultural sector. The study highlights the need to address the challenges that women face in achieving economic empowerment, including limited access to credit, training, and land ownership. By improving access to these resources, policymakers and development practitioners can create an enabling environment that fosters women's economic empowerment and promotes gender equity in Ethiopia's agricultural sector. Groundwater resources play an important role in meeting the water needs of agriculture and industry. Therefore, identifying the factors affecting the potential challenges of groundwater resources can be key to proper implementation and management, considered the main goal of the current research. In this study, agricultural groundwater poverty index (AGPI) and industrial groundwater poverty index (IGPI) were developed based on General, Effective, and Data mining methods for the study period 2012–2020 in the West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. Both agricultural and industrial sectors were classified into five categories with 17 and 15 associated variables, respectively. The total scores of AGPI and IGPI were obtained (48.63, 47.80, 49.67) and (33.35, 33.60, 33.37), respectively, for General, Effective, and Data mining methods in the West Azerbaijan Province. In 2012–2020, the qualitative classification of the sustainability status of groundwater resources for the agriculture and industry sectors was at a good and very good level. The crop cultivation patterns of Pea, Beans, and Lentils products require management reforms to avoid the relative unsustainability in groundwater resources. Also, Production of Food and Beverages, Tobacco products, Production of Coke fuel, Oil refineries, and Nuclear fuels, Chemical Products, Rubber and Plastic products, and Non-Metallic Mineral Products could face management challenges in the West Azerbaijan Province. As the agricultural sector puts more pressure on groundwater resources than the industrial sector, it is expected that the southern part of the province will be more affected by water crises in the future. Also, the countries' internal management plans and international relations, such as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), could have a significant impact on the status of their water resources. Due to saving time and money, it is highly recommended to use the Data mining method to develop the AGPI and IGPI in practical projects. With the deep integration of the digital economy and agricultural development, agricultural digital transformation promotes agricultural production, and industrial upgrading and broadens sales channels to achieve the strategic goal of rural revitalization in China. To explore whether agricultural digitization can help farmers increase their income and what path can be achieved, this study is based on the theoretical framework of rural revitalization theory and digitization. Through a questionnaire survey of 1500 farmers in Hubei Province, the impact mechanism of agricultural digitization transformation on farmers' income is empirically studied. The empirical results show that the digital transformation of agriculture can promote the increase in farmers' income, and promote the increase in farmers' income by improving production efficiency, broadening sales channels, and promoting the upgrading of agricultural structure. At the same time, both production efficiency and sales channels form a chain double intermediary path with the upgrading of agricultural structure. Under the background of rural revitalization, this study provides theoretical references and guidance for further promoting agricultural digital transformation to increase farmers' income. Agricultural practices naturally interject greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere; consequently, analyzing decadal variation in N2O, CO2, and CH4 is indispensable over a major rice cultivating area (West Bengal) in subtropical India. Analysis of EDGAR data shows an unremitting increase in GHGs in the study region over two decades. The increasing global warming makes us revisit climate-resilient strategies to mitigate the risk of climate change on paddy production in agrarian economies. However, adapting to these strategies and impact assessment is necessary to comprehend their productiveness and further policy recommendation. Therefore, this study identifies the determinants of adaptation and measures the impact of these strategies on farm performance (yield and net income) and food security of smallholder paddy farmers in India. We used primary data from 612 paddy farmers from 20 villages in the Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. The study used probit regression analysis to identify adaptation constraints and Multinomial Logistic Regression (MLR) to determine the change in the direction and magnitude of the determinants of adaptation strategies. The study also used the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) approach to estimate the causal impact of climate adaptation on paddy yield, net income, and food security. Probit model outcomes identified that education level, cooperative membership, access to extension services, and institutional credit adoption positively and significantly impacted climate change adaptation across smallholders. MLR analysis identified that the direction and magnitude of the discussed determinants changed with different combinations of adaptation choices. The PSM results estimated that adaptation of climate-resilient strategies impacted paddy productivity, net income, and food security positively and significantly. In addition, paddy farmers using a more significant number of climate adaptation strategies experienced better yield, revenue, and food security than those farmers using fewer adaptation strategies. Public extension services disseminate awareness and promote community participation in landscape restoration efforts around the world. Due to the importance of forest restoration programs in Pakistan, access to public extension services can have a significant impact on community mobilization in reforestation efforts. This study quantifies the social and landscape restoration impacts of extension services in communities with and without access to extension services. It also identifies the factors influencing community-level access to extension services in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region of Pakistan. The results of our study showed that those communities that had access to extension services were more active and effective in restoring forest landscapes than those that didn't have access to extension services. Extension services increased awareness of forest conservation, adoption and implementation of forest management strategies, changes in attitudes and behaviors, and social empowerment through capacity building. The findings suggested that several factors, including no roads to a village on hilltop, proximity/distance of a village to the extension office, lack of community cooperation with extension officers, weak government support for extension agents and elite capture in the communities restricted communities' access to extension services. Based on the findings of the study, we recommend the development of infrastructure, especially roads to uphill villages, and the recruitment of more extension agents to include marginalized communities in extension programs. Challenges to crop sector arising from changing temperature and rainfall cause losses to food crop productivity in particular and agriculture sector in general. The present study aims to see the farm households' perception and adaptation to climate change and to determine the effects of adaptation on food crop productivity in Pakistan using cross-sectional data collected from Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan. Probit model is used to evaluate farmer's understanding of climate change and its associated institutional, socio-economic and demographic variables. Results show that the majority of farmers have experienced the changes in rainfall (76%) and temperature (79%). Socio-economic and demographic variables such as education above primary schooling years, number of earners, medium farm size, NGOs, and access to information sources, namely radio and neighboring farmers, are significantly related with perception of climate change. Propensity score matching method (PSM) is employed for examining the factors influencing adaptation to climate change and the effects of adaptation on food crop productivity. Results of PSM indicate that male household heads, family size, matriculation education, households having access to credit, information source, land quality, perception of rainfall and rented land are significantly related with adaptation to climate change. Productivity gains for adapters are 0.04% and the productivity gains for non-adapters are 3.8% if they adapted. The study suggests the need to invest in farmer's education, improve information sources and skills of existing extension staffs on climate change and adaptation measures. Agriculture is mainly a rural preoccupation, and about three quarters of the population growth in developing countries emanate from agricultural households. Some demographers posit that the agricultural system affects birth rates; in addition, population pressures might put stress on agricultural land in farming communities. This paper focuses on the population to land ratio in the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) Enumeration Areas (EAs) in Ghana and tackles the important question: Do households adjust to an increasing population/land ratio by having fewer children? The authors explore this theme in the context of rural population density and fertility in the three MiDA zones, drawing on data collected in 23 EAs in Ghana in 2008. The results suggest that fertility in the MiDA zones can be affected by density if nothing is done to regulate population density. The regression estimates for the pooled data show that all the coefficients are negative and statistically significant at the 0.05 level or better. Thus, children ever born is inversely correlated with density, agricultural production, female literacy and the trend variable (year). The estimates from the cross-sectional data as well as the spatial coefficient were consistent with those of the pooled data. The results under various model specifications are stable. We find from the Cox model that areas with higher education levels and a lower share of individuals working in agriculture, both correlated with land use. Agricultural production has at most a modest independent effect on fertility. Our findings suggest that population density has a reasonable inhibiting effect on fertility in the MiDA Zones. There is growing awareness in today’s society regarding the potential of sustainable farming practices to decrease soil degradation processes. This paper analyses the financial, environmental and social aspects of durum wheat cultivation practices linked to soil degradation processes in Southern Tuscany. The analysis has been conducted within a Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) framework and utilizing NAIADE (Novel Approach to Imprecise Assessment and Decision Environments) as a software tool. Conventional, integrated and organic durum wheat cultivation practices have been compared. One key outcome of the analysis is that organic practices represent a good compromise solution in relation to the environmental and socio-economic evaluation criteria chosen. Finally, the paper also offers some considerations regarding the influence of Agricultural European Policies (such as the CAP-Common Agricultural Policy) on the management of farming systems and as a consequence on the soil degradation phenomena. This paper discusses the economic potential in terms of income changes that may result from conversion to low-external-input agriculture (LEIA) organic farming in a Kenya's catchment area. A spreadsheet model applying the gross margin and net present value analysis was developed to estimate economic returns to labour and land of alternative smallholder cropping systems in the East Mau Catchment. The income and costs over a 10-year horizon associated with current cropping practices of a typical farm household cultivating 1.12 hectares of maize-bean intercrop, Irish potato, carrots, tomatoes, cabbages and kales mix were characterized based on field work conducted in 2008-2010. An 'average' smallholder LEIA organic farm was simulated based on the conventional one, and its income discounted. A comparison was then made of the two farm types. Results indicate annual net present value returns to cropped land average Ksh 21,878/ha ($ 267/ha) and Kshs 22,561/ha (€ 275/ha) in 2010 values for conventional and prototype LEIA organic farming systems, respectively. Net returns are particularly sensitive to crop yields and price and cost of fertilizers and seeds. Further efforts should be made to provide an economic analysis of other LEIA organic farming practices such as composting, double digging and agroforestry in terms of additional labour costs resultant. The model can be extended to build more scenarios on the role of price premiums. Sustainable development requires clean water. In Sweden, water supply has historically been good, but a changed climate may alter that situation. Islands such as Öland and Gotland, which already have a strained water situation due to their location and bedrock, can be useful case studies for understanding how industries adapt and overcome obstacles in changing behaviour to be more sustainable. Focus groups and a postal questionnaire were conducted to study the water shortage mitigations of the tourism and agriculture industries. The results indicated four salient steps for these industries: awareness/knowledge, responsibility, behaviour and mitigation measures. While awareness was high among all respondents, the level of knowledge varied. Both the tourism and agriculture industries acknowledged their own responsibility but primarily placed the responsibility on each other and on other actors. All respondents had ideas about what behaviours needed to be changed in others, but not as much about their own behaviours, which is a natural consequence of the transfer of responsibility. Finally, there were many ideas for mitigation measures with the agricultural industry focusing on traditional approaches such as irrigation ponds and collecting rainwater, and the tourism industry having more innovative ideas such as re-circulating water and behaviour changes but had not progressed as far in their implementation. This study has shown that industries have different prerequisites and that providing them with tools to help them use preventive measures could speed up the transition to a more sustainable future. In recent years, the Vietnamese government has dedicated considerable planning and resources toward agricultural restructuring. These far-reaching efforts include promotion of intensive shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta to encourage the sustainable development of rural livelihoods. However, while intensive shrimp production may improve economic wellbeing, the current production practices raise concerns about the impacts on the local environment. The current study examines the economic and environmental efficiencies associated with the two primary species of farmed shrimp in four coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta. The study employs the material balance principle as a framework which considers the inputs to production and the outputs which may be undesirable. Using the efficiency estimates, we measure and investigate the trade-offs between the economic and environmental efficiencies for the shrimp farming in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. The results suggest that the shrimp farming produces a significant nutrient surplus for either species. The analysis also suggests that achieving cost efficiency and environmental efficiency would help the shrimp farmers to reduce the undesirable outputs and that the movement from the cost efficiency to the environmental efficiency could result in a reduction of both production costs and nutrients. Based on these results, we offer policy recommendations for economically feasible and environmentally friendly shrimp farming. Analyzing the effects on Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries of recently proposed European Union (EU) and United States (US) carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAs) and bans on the import of non-deforestation-free products (DFPs), we ask: What share of LAC exports could be affected? What would be the consequences of the EU and US broadening these regulations to other commodities, or of other countries adopting similar regulations? How vulnerable are LAC countries, in terms of emissions intensity, deforestation risk, and export concentration risks? What policies could they adopt in response? Using data from the World Integrated Trade Solutions, we find that, as the region's productive profile is agricultural rather than industrial, CBAs have a milder effect than DFPs. Less than 0.5% of LAC exports are exposed under the EU-CBA, compared to 17% under the EU-DFP and around 6% under the US-DFP. A broader EU-CBA would impact up to 14% of LAC country exports, while expanding the consequences of the EU-DFP would be marginal. The impact of other countries adopting CBA plans would also be small, because the EU and US are the main LAC export destinations. LAC products are vulnerable for several reasons, from having higher embedded emissions—and therefore costs—than European producers', to having regional competitors with lower emissions intensity or deforestation risk, and lacking alternative export markets. Excessive concentration of greenhouse gases in atmosphere emitted from human activities has been considerably changing the world's climate, especially in the last 50 years. Agriculture, as humans' food production system, has undoubtedly interrelated with climate change (CC). During current decades, the impacts of CC on agriculture have been properly investigated; however, the impacts of agriculture on CC have received lower attention. This may be due to the scarcity of long-term spatiotemporal climatic and agricultural data to analyze coupling trends and interactions. Benefiting from a comprehensive database and using structural equation modeling, this study seeks to investigate the contribution of agriculture to CC in Iran for more than half a century. For this, two indicators were developed to evaluate structural characteristics of agricultural expansion (AEI) and CC at the province level. Then, the effect of AEI on CC was investigated using the structural equation modeling technique. The results showed that AEI has not had a positive contribution to raising the long-term average surface temperature. Precisely, the provinces with a higher level of surface temperature have had a lower AEI, indicating that other sectors outweigh agriculture in exacerbating long-term CC in the country. Nevertheless, Iran still needs to improve and sustain its agricultural practices and technologies. The main conclusion of this study is that if the government and policymakers aspire to manage CC, they should have a more holistic and systematic view. Riceberry rice has a special characteristic of being specially bred with high nutrients. High-value added products from riceberry are being promoted targeting health-conscious consumers. To provide supporting information for sustainable food systems, environmental footprinting was applied for evaluating the environmental performance of a ready-to-eat product of riceberry rice mixed with kidney red bean called "Riceberry + KU", developed by Kasetsart University in Thailand. Based on sold unit as the unit of analysis, the carbon footprint of Riceberry + KU was 5.24 gCO2e per 300 g. Interestingly, white rice had the highest carbon footprint and riceberry rice as well as the riceberry product had at least 30% lower values. However, using nutrient-based scores, although white rice still had the highest carbon footprint, Riceberry + KU had 80% lower and the riceberry rice had 65% lower values. This resulted from the highest nutritional levels found in Riceberry + KU along with the lower greenhouse gas emissions from riceberry field during the cultivation stage. Similar trends were found in the other impact categories assessed by using life cycle assessment as well. To provide appropriate information to consumers for making more sustainable food choices, the environmental performance based on nutrient quality resulting from different farming systems and processing methods should be used to derive recommendations for moving toward sustainable food systems. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive approach to agricultural enterprise clustering that will allow us to diagnose their market position and identify integration opportunities to increase production outputs. Cluster analysis is used as the methodology in this study. The study analysed 44 agricultural enterprises in Russia. Based on the cluster analysis, four groups of homogeneous agricultural enterprises with diverse activities that are significant in the given economic market segment were identified, within which the mean and limit values of clustering indicators were calculated. We were able to highlight the characteristics of each group of companies thanks to the clustering. The leader cluster was identified, which has a high number of personnel and performance indicators that are above the mean. This cluster's enterprises are industry leaders; they cover a large territory in Russia; they engage in technological, innovative, logistical, and international activities; and they have a high level of strategic planning and management. This generalised characterisation enabled us to compare the main criteria of the clusters, allowing us to identify the field of strategic action to improve production outputs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a PROMETHEE multicriteria outranking-based approach for prioritizing agricultural interventions to alleviate climate change on a farm basis. The drought-prone areas of Rajshahi and flood-saline-prone areas of Barisal in rural Bangladesh were chosen as case studies. A number of existent agricultural interventions have been comparatively evaluated upon several diversified criteria. The process of evaluation was held through an online survey to experts with knowledge in rice farming and climate change effects in Bangladesh. The findings indicate that water storage systems were prioritized first in northern drought area, whereas the introduction of improved rice varieties in flood-saline south was of the highest importance. Furthermore, the combined implementation of water storage, improved rice varieties, and seminars on agricultural management to farmers was signified as an integrated response to climate change for both regions. The findings were already presented to key stakeholders where a strong support for the combined implementation of the suggested interventions in pilot sites was given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
