This paper describes an innovative planning process, the Wind Power Charter of the Regional Natural Park of the Narbonnaise (southern France). By 'innovative', we mean that planners' decisions relate to the site/situation which they aim to transform rather than to preexisting norms or abstract territorial representations, as is so often the case in wind power planning processes. This planning process has a direct consequence: it succeeds in taking into account the existing local landscape and in engaging it in a transformative process. Drawing upon Deleuze's and Guattari's concepts of 'map'/'tracing', and on Deleuze's concept of 'sign', we follow the way in which landscape is circulated in this process and analyse the relational properties of the graphic representations which underlie it. The analysis relies on a follow-up of the design and consultation work throughout this process. It shows how an iconographic practice can contribute to the composition of an emerging reality (new landscape) without indexing it to preexisting and normative representations of the territory: hence the title of the paper, "Playing with the line, channelling multiplicity", which connects the materiality of graphic forms with the nonrepresentational--with the multiplicity of the emerging energy landscapes. In this paper I suggest fleshing out and making material the authorial voice by exploring pathways for writing a critical biography of Claude Raffestin, a Swiss geographer writing since the late 1970s up to the present day. In exploring his life and contribution as part of the wider Francophone tradition of social and political geography, I aim to engage further with the debate on the circulation of knowledge and the alleged hegemony of the English language within geography. In doing this, I suggest that the term 'disciplinary Orientalism' might help to think through some of the contradictions in geography, which both draws heavily from foreign critical thinkers, often removed from the spaces and contexts of debate they are/were writing in, and simultaneously ignores foreign geographical traditions and contributions. Building on Raffestin's work-and drawing from diverse sources, including his writings, reviews of his work, and new interview material-I explore how his geographies might make sense here and now, to the extent that 'here' is inevitably an uncertain place, not only in where this paper is written and read but also because reading always takes place in-between contexts. Through this example I explore how scholars are embodied and located in uncertain places and points to the multiple circulations and noncirculations of theory and praxis within geography. In this paper I explore the notion that our movements in and through a place define our engagement with it and help to constitute it as a place. Concepts and concomitant interpretations of place as a ‘situated’ and contemplative experience have to date received much cultural geographical attention. In increasingly mobile societies, however, I argue that mobility should be central to the ways in which we conceptualise and understand the character and meanings of different spaces and places. Although geographical exploration has begun concerning the politics and power relations of the mobile subject, little attention has yet been paid to the experiences and spatialities generative of the body-subject in mobility. Whilst acknowledging the importance of representations in directing action, I strategically emphasise and explore the notion that we create meaning and belong in a place according to how we are in a place. Drawing upon ethnographic work with racing and touring cyclists in the United Kingdom and France, I consider how the conjoining of the person and bike and the resulting embodied rhythms and kinaesthetic sensations of the movement of cycling are constitutive of the character and meanings of particular places. Ultimately, in this paper I point to an understanding of the kinaesthetic and sensuous experiences of the hybrid subject-object (in this instance ‘the cyclist’) as fundamental in rethinking how people live, feel, and ultimately create meaningful spatial relations. In principle, the European Union provides for the free movements of workers between its member states. No worker should be discriminated against based solely on nationality, and this applies to most jobs in the public sector. In practice, however, the elimination of nationality criteria for public sector work applies only to workers from EU member states. In the French public health care system, discrimination based on nationality, either of the worker or the worker's diploma, remains salient for 'third-country' medical professionals whose qualifications must undergo a lengthy recognition process. In the context of expanding EU integration and anxieties over postcolonial medical migration into Europe, the historical and geographical context for nationality criteria warrants greater attention. This paper suggests that the persistence of nationality restrictions, and their effects on medical professionals seeking recognition for their qualifications in France, lies in the occluded colonial context for their development. This perspective on medical migration requires moving outside the European frame in which nationality restrictions, instantiated in French law during the Third Republic (1870-1914) and strengthened further under the Vichy Regime (1940-44), have been addressed by historians and policy makers. A more explicitly postcolonial perspective on medical migration's implications for citizenship productively demonstrates how colonial distinctions between French citizens and colonial subjects helped shape the regulatory frameworks that continue to regulate the medical professions in contemporary France.
