The safety of microplastics (MPs) and associated health effects has been one of the major concerns worldwide. However, the role of photoaging toward the risk of MPs in water ecosystems remains inconclusive yet. In this study, the size of polyamide (PA, ∼32.50 μm) MPs was obviously decreased after photoaging in water containing fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) (∼19.75 and ∼24.30 μm, respectively). Nanoplastics were formed (4.65% and 2.03%, respectively) and hydrophilia and colloidal stability was improved due to the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups. FA-aged PA exhibited higher inhibition on body length and weight of developing zebrafish than HA-aged and pristine PA. Photoaged MPs in intestine were more difficult to be depurated by zebrafish, leading to the disappearance of intestinal folding, shedding of more enterocytes, and emaciation of intestinal microvilli. Dietary lipid digestion in larvae was inhibited by aged PA due to oxidative stress-triggered lipid peroxidation and inhibition of lipase activities and bile acids secretion. Exposure of photoaged MPs down-regulated genes (cd36, dgat1a, dgat2, mttp, etc.) associated with triglyceride resynthesis and transportation, resulting in lipid maladsorption and growth inhibition. Our findings highlight the potential negative effects of environmentally aged MPs on diet digestion and nutrient assimilation in fish.

This study surveyed occurrences and influencing factors of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) on skin surface. Skin wipe samples from palms, back-of-hands and forearms of 30 adults were collected by using gauze pads soaked in isopropyl alcohol in Beijing, China. Tris(chloropropyl) phosphate isomers (∑TCPP), tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) were the most abundant compounds with detection frequencies higher than 97%. ∑TCPP showed the highest mean level (4.6 μg/m2), followed by TPHP (2.4 μg/m2) and TCEP (1.6 μg/m2). Levels on palms were slightly higher than on back-of-hands, and both were substantially higher than those on forearms. TCEP and ∑TCPP levels were strong reliable in three repeated measurements from 4 participants over a three month period (intraclass correlation of coefficient of 0.91 and 0.95, respectively), while TPHP levels were not. Washing with soap and water removed a large fraction of PFRs on hands with median reduction of 76, 72 and 67% for TCEP, ∑TCPP and TPHP, respectively. Paired dust samples, table surface wipe and hand wipe samples were collected from 17 offices (13 surface wipes and 22 hand wipes) in Beijing. Hand wipe TCEP, ∑TCPP and TPHP were neither correlated with dust samples nor with table surface wipe samples. Two methods were used for dermal exposure assessments. The estimated lower median total exposure from palms, back-of-hands and forearms by the relative absorption method were 0.6, 1.0, 0.3 ng/kg BW-d for TCEP, ∑TCPP and TPHP, respectively. These estimates were in the same range as those via dust ingestion for adults in Beijing, suggesting dermal absorption is likely a significant pathway of human PFR exposure. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered to be the main sources of microplastic contaminants in the aquatic environment, and an in-depth understanding of the behavior of microplastics among the critical treatment technologies in WWTPs is urgently needed. In this paper, the characteristics and removal of microplastics in 38 WWTPs in 11 countries worldwide were reviewed. The abundance of microplastics in the influent, effluent, and sludge was compared. Then, based on existing data, the removal efficiency of microplastics in critical treatment technologies were compared by quantitative analysis. Particularly, detailed mechanisms of critical treatment technologies including primary settling treatment with flocculation, bioreactor system, advanced oxidation and membrane filtration were discussed. Thereafter, the abundance load and ecological hazard of the microplastics discharged from WWTPs into the aquatic and soil environments were summarized. The abundance of microplastics in the influent ranged from 0.28 particles L−1 to 3.14 × 104 particles L−1, while that in the effluent ranged from 0.01 particles L−1 to 2.97 × 102 particles L−1. The microplastic abundance in the sludge within the range of 4.40 × 103–2.40 × 105 particles kg−1. The occurrence levels of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and four novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were determined and compared in indoor dust from different microenvironments (21 homes, 23 offices and 16 day care centers) in Beijing, China. Concentrations of ∑8PBDEs in dust were 430–17,000 ng/g, 690–8600 ng/g, and 90–2300 ng/g for homes, offices, and day care centers, respectively, and were dominated by BDE-209. Concentrations of ∑4NBFRs ranged from 310 to 17,000 ng/g, 300 to 4300 ng/g, and not detected to 500 ng/g for homes, offices, and day care centers, respectively, and were dominated by bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE) across microenvironments. The results showed an increasing detection and elevated concentration of NBFRs (especially BEH-TEBP), indicating that monitoring of NBFRs in dust samples should be of concern in future studies. A notable finding was that the BFR concentrations in dust samples from day care centers were generally one order of magnitude lower than those from homes and offices in the present study. This implies that previous estimates of toddler exposure via dust ingestion on data from homes may be overestimated. Concentrations of BDE-209 and ∑8PBDEs were found to be significantly higher in elevated surface dust than floor dust from day care centers. The estimates of daily intakes of BFRs via dust ingestion for Chinese adults and toddlers using Monte Carlo analysis were 2–5 orders of magnitude lower than the corresponding reference daily intakes. This study documents the temporal variability in concentrations of flame retardants (FRs) in floor dust from three offices in Beijing, China. Dust from Office A (OAD) was collected weekly from March to August, 2012, and sampling of dust from Office B and C (OBD and OCD) was conducted fortnightly (each two weeks) from March to December 2012. With intensive and continuous sampling, we report for the first time on clear and coherent temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and phosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) in indoor dust. The observed mean concentrations of ∑9PBDEs, ∑4NBFRs and ∑9PFRs, were 554, 11,100 and 128,000 ng g−1 in OAD; 7560, 5000 and 17,300 ng g−1 in OBD; and 4750, 3550 and 17,200 ng g−1 in OCD, respectively. With exception of PBDEs, concentrations of FRs were elevated in OAD than in OBD and OCD. Two to ten-fold variations were observed between the minimum and maximum concentrations of FRs in the same office, indicating that the sampling moment exerts a substantial influence on the level of FR contamination. Different seasonality was distinctively found between BFRs and PFRs. Except for a few occasional abnormal values, BFR levels in office dust were generally constant among different seasons. The abundance rank order for PFRs was: winter > autumn > summer, with peak values occurring in late winter and early spring. This pattern may be attributable to the fact that PFRs are more sensitive to temperature changes compared to PBDEs and NBFRs owning to their higher volatilities. The absence of significant seasonal variation for BFR concentrations in indoor dust compared to outdoor air and dust concentrations is also discussed. For researches on toxic chemicals in settled indoor dust, selection of dust fraction is a critical influencing factor to the accuracy of human exposure risk assessment results. However, analysis of the selection of dust fraction in recent studies revealed that there is no consensus. This study classified and presented researches on distribution of toxic chemicals according to dust particle size and on relationship between dust particle size and human exposure possibility. According to the literature, beyond the fact that there were no consistent conclusions on particle size distribution of adherent fraction, dust with particle size less than 100 μm should be paid more attention and that larger than 250 μm is neither adherent nor proper for human exposure risk assessment. Calculation results based on literature data show that with different selections of dust fractions, analytical results of toxic chemicals would vary up to 10-fold, which means that selecting dust fractions arbitrarily will lead to large errors in risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals in settled dust. Taking into account the influence of dust particle size on risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals, a new methodology for risk assessment of human exposure to toxic chemicals in settled indoor dust is proposed and human exposure parameter systems to settled indoor dust are advised to be established at national and regional scales all over the world.
