The article provides information on micro electronic mechanical systems (MEMS), as discussed in the British Society of Environmental Engineer's annual convention in London, England in December 2005. The seminar focused on the design, fabrication and application of commercial MEMS in the engineering and medical industries. Several lecturers provided in-depth review of developments, covering topics from accelerometers to pace-makers. Professor Richard Syms presented a review of the range of products available in electronic, optical, chemical, biochemical, medical and mechanical forms. Syms concluded that the industry is not another semiconductor type business opportunity following Moore's law of diminishing feature size, but a unique market requiring a multi billion-dollar investment with high risks to fulfill its potential.
