During the recent decades, a number of overflow embankment protection systems were implemented. One design is the Minimum Energy Loss (MEL) weir, developed to pass large flood events with minimum energy loss and low erosion. Several MEL weirs have successfully operated for decades in Australian catchments affected by heavy tropical and sub-tropical rainfalls with very flat gradients. Their historical performances are discussed and confirmed the design capability to pass large floods with small afflux and very small energy loss and little environmental impact including no significant erosion at the abutments. During a major flood, visual and quantitative observations were undertaken at the Chinchilla MEL weir. On the smooth converging chute, the observations showed that the inception of self‐aeration was a three‐dimensional process with a gradual change in free‐surface roughness, from a smooth glassy free-surface to a very-rough choppy surface. An optical technique (OF) was implemented to derive the contour maps of surface velocities based upon video movies taken from a sturdy tripod. The self-aerated flow velocity data were close to the backwater equation in the self‐aerated region, while highlighting regions of high- and low-velocities across the chute. The OF data showed large streamwise surface velocity fluctuations in the aerated flow region, consistent with the broad literature on self-aerated flow measurements. The ratio of transverse to streamwise surface turbulence intensity indicated a strong anisotropy of the free-surface turbulence.

When the Froude number F of a free-surface flow ranges between 0.3 and 3, the flow is unstable and frequently characterised by free surface undulations, with the undular hydraulic jump being a seminal flow in hydro-environmental mechanics. The presence of the free surface undulations significantly affects the flow field, with major velocity and pressure field redistributions between successive crests and troughs. All the current theoretical models to simulate undular hydraulic jumps are limited to two-dimensional flow conditions, ignoring all the relevant three-dimensional flow effects, namely shock-wave drag, turbulent breaking and turbulent stresses. These aspects are critically accounted for in this review article, where a depth-averaged Boussinesq model which approximately accounted for 3D flow effects was presented, constituting the first attempt in this line. The water waves resulting from the collapse of a dam are important unsteady free surface flows in civil and environmental engineering. Considering the basic case of ideal dam break waves in a horizontal and rectangular channel the wave patterns observed experimentally depends on the initial depths downstream (hd) and upstream (ho) of the dam. For r = hd/ho above the transition domain 0.4–0.55, the surge travelling downstream is undular, a feature described by the dispersive Serre–Green–Naghdi (SGN) equations. In contrast, for r below this transition domain, the surge is broken and it is well described by the weak solution of the Saint–Venant equations, called Shallow Water Equations (SWE). Hybrid models combining SGN–SWE equations are thus used in practice, typically implementing wave breaking modules resorting to several criteria to define the onset of breaking, frequently involving case-dependent calibration of parameters. In this work, a new set of higher-order depth-averaged non-hydrostatic equations is presented. The equations consist in the SGN equations plus additional higher-order contributions originating from the variation with elevation of the velocity profile, modeled here with a Picard iteration of the potential flow equations. In plunging jets and at hydraulic jumps, large amounts of air bubbles are entrained at the impingement of the liquid jet into the receiving body. Air is entrapped and advected into a turbulent shear layer with strong interactions between the air bubble advection process and momentum shear flow. In this new physical study, air–water flow measurements were systematically repeated with identical inflow length, inflow depth and inflow velocity in a vertical supported jet (PJ) and a horizontal hydraulic jump (HJ). Detailed measurements were conducted with the same instrumentation. Both similarities and differences were observed between the two multiphase gas–liquid shear flows. Visual observations showed a key difference in the outer region, with a buoyancy-driven flow in the plunging jet with negligible void fraction, versus a strong recirculation motion with uncontrolled interfacial aeration in the hydraulic jump. Differences were also observed at the impingement perimeter, in terms of fluctuation frequencies and amplitudes, for identical inflow conditions. Both flow conditions yielded intense local singular air entrainment and close results were observed in terms of void fraction, bubble count rate, bubble chord sizes and interfacial area in the shear layer, in both the plunging jet and hydraulic jump. The transfer of momentum between impinging jet and receiving water, as well as the effect of buoyancy, were however affected by the flow geometry.

A compression wave is an unsteady rapidly-varied open channel flow motion, characterised by an increase in water depth. A detailed investigation was conducted in a prismatic asymmetrical channel, to better understand the physical processes observed in tidal/tsunami-bore affected estuaries with irregular topography. The prismatic channel was equipped with a 1 V:5H transverse slope across the full channel width. The free-surface data presented three-dimensional unsteady flow features, and the velocity measurements showed a drastic impact of the surge on the flow field, with strong three-dimensional features. With the arrival of the surge front, the transverse velocity component became large in the shallow-water section, indicating some unsteady secondary motion and recirculation during and shortly after the passage of the surge. A culvert is a covered channel designed to pass water through an embankment. The recognition of the adverse ecological impacts of culverts on upstream fish passage is driving the development of new culvert design guidelines, with a focus on small-bodied fish species seeking low velocity zones to minimise energy expenditure. Herein a hybrid modelling technique was applied, combining physical modelling, one-dimensional theoretical calculation and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics modelling. The results reveal fundamental turbulent processes that may affect small-body-mass fish navigability and provide new insights for the development of standard box culvert design guidelines. Systematic validations were performed to a wide range of initial conditions and smooth barrel geometries. A physical relationship was derived from numerical and experimental data of past and present studies, correlating the dimensionless flow area with a normalised local velocity V/Vmean.

During the last decades, concerns regarding the ecological impact of standard culverts have led to some design evolution. The installation of baffles along the culvert barrel yields smaller velocities and larger water depths in the barrel, potentially more suitable for upstream fish passage, albeit with a decrease in discharge capacity. Small triangular corner baffles were proposed to facilitate the upstream passage of small-body-mass fish, without compromising the discharge capacity of the culvert at design flow. Although fish benefited from low velocity regions for resting and sheltering, a small fraction of small-body-mass fish were observed to become disoriented by the adverse effect of flow reversal regions in the wake of plain baffles. This study presents the hydrodynamic testing of small ventilated triangular corner baffles for standard box culverts. The baffle ventilation was introduced to reduce the impact of negative wake behind the baffles. Two designs were tested: a baffle with three holes and a brush baffle. Detailed modelling in a near-full-scale culvert barrel showed that the ventilated corner baffles created a smaller negative wake region. A lesser negative velocity magnitude was observed behind the ventilated baffles, in comparison to plain baffles, for the same flow rate, baffle height and spacing. With ventilated corner baffles, the longitudinal distribution of low-velocity zone was more uniform, yielding a better longitudinal connectivity for upstream passage, compared to plain baffles. A comparison between various boundary treatments suggested however that the requirements for continuous, sizeable low positive velocity zone suitable to small-bodied fish might be better fulfilled with an asymmetrically roughened culvert barrel than with triangular baffles, even with ventilation.

A culvert is a covered channel to pass streams and floodwaters through an embankment. The ecological impact of culverts has been recognised, in particular in terms of stream connectivity, but existing guidelines lead often to un-economical culvert design. Herein, a small triangular corner baffle system was tested physically in a near-full-scale fish-friendly facility of a box culvert barrel. Experiments were repeated with several configurations to characterise the flow properties for a range of less-than-design flows, baffle sizes and spacings. In presence of triangular corner baffles, the flow was asymmetrical, owing to the wake behind each baffle. The presence of triangular corner baffles had a moderate effect on the flow resistance and discharge capacity, albeit the data indicated the combined effect of relative baffle height and spacing on the friction factor. With triangular baffles, the surface area of slow velocity regions increased by a factor of two to three. Such low velocity regions are preferential swimming zones for fish, beneficial to small-bodied fish passage. Testing with small-bodied fish showed that fish preferred to swim upstream in slow-velocity regions, typically next to the sidewalls and in the left corner where the triangular baffles were located. The presence of small triangular baffles facilitated substantially the upstream passage of small fish, including in terms of endurance, compared to a smooth un-baffled box culvert barrel, when the baffle size was comparable to the fish length. The present findings highlighted the importance of physical modelling at near full-scale for the development of fish-friendly culvert designs.

Stepped spillways are man-made hydraulic structures designed to control the release of flow and to achieve a high energy dissipation. The flow pattern for a given stepped chute geometry can be distinguished into different regimes. Herein, the transition flow regime occurs at a range of intermediate discharges and is characterised by strong hydrodynamic fluctuations and intense splashing next to the free-surface. Up to date, only minimal experimental data is available for the transition flow. As this flow regime is likely to occur on stepped spillways designed for skimming flow operation, a knowledge of the transition flow characteristics is important to ensure safe operation. The present article investigates the hydraulics of the transition flow regime on a laboratory spillway, presenting a detailed characterisation of air–water flow properties and an image-based analysis of pool depth fluctuations within successive step-cavities. The results show two different void fraction and turbulence intensity profiles, indicating the existence of an upper and a lower transition flow sub-regime. The image-based analysis suggests the presence of a rapidly and a gradually varied flow region downstream of the inception point for both sub-regimes, whereas full equilibrium flow was not reached in the physical model. Overall, the study contributes towards improving the characterisation of the transition flow by assembling analytical solutions for different two-phase flow parameters, including void fraction, interfacial velocity and step-cavity pool height.

The tidal bore of the Garonne River (France) was investigated on 29 August, 31 August and 27 October 2015, during which instantaneous velocity measurements were performed continuously at high-frequency (200 Hz). The tidal bore occurrence had a marked effect on the flow field and turbulent Reynolds stress data, indicating large shear stresses, together with large and rapid fluctuations, during the bore passage and the early flood tide. Like many natural process flows, the tidal bore flow motion was dominated by coherent structure activities and turbulent events, with significant impact on the natural systems including in terms of sediment processes. Herein a new turbulent event analysis was developed for the highly-unsteady rapidly-varied tidal bore flow. The analysis was based upon basic concepts, in which turbulent bursting events were defined in terms of the instantaneous relative turbulent flux, and the method was extended to the rapidly-varied, highly-unsteady tidal bore motion. The turbulent event data showed relatively close results for most fluxes during the tidal bores. The event duration showed some tidal trend, with longer turbulent events immediately after the tidal bore passage, occurring simultaneously with major sediment erosion processes. The field data set and analyses suggested that a turbulent event analysis may be applicable to highly-unsteady rapidly-varied flows, providing quantitative details into the turbulent bursts that are responsible for major mixing and sedimentary processes.

Dam-break flood waves are associated with major environmental disasters provoked by the sudden release of water stored in reservoirs. Ritter found in 1892 an analytical solution to the wave structure of an ideal fluid released during an instantaneous dam failure, propagating over initially dry horizontal terrain. This solution, though ideal, hence frictionless, is widely used to test numerical solutions of the Shallow Water Equations (SWE), and as educational tool in courses of fluid mechanics, given that it is a peculiar case of the Riemann problem. However, the real wave structure observed experimentally differs in a major portion of the wave profile, including the positive and negative fronts. Given the importance of an accurate prediction of the dam break wave, the positive and negative wave portions originating from the breaking of a dam with initially dry land on the tailwater reach are revisited in this work. First, the propagation features of the dry-front are investigated using an analytical boundary-layer type model (Whitham/Dressler/Chanson model) constructed matching an (outer) inviscid dynamic wave to an (inner) viscous diffusive wave. The analytical solution is evaluated using an accurate numerical solution of the SWE produced using the MUSCL-Hancock finite-volume method, which is tested independently obtaining the solution based on the discontinuous Galerkin finite-element method. The propagation features of the negative wave are poorly reproduced by the SWE during the initial stages of dam break flows, and, thus, are then investigated using the Serre–Green–Naghdi equations for weakly-dispersive fully non-linear water waves, which are solved using a finite volume-finite difference scheme.

The flow structure in the aerated region of the roller generated by breaking waves remains a great challenge to study, with large quantities of entrained air and turbulence interactions making it very difficult to investigate in details. A number of analogies were proposed between breaking waves in deep or shallow water, tidal bores and hydraulic jumps. Many numerical models used to simulate waves in the surf zone do not implicitly simulate the breaking process of the waves, but are required to parameterise the wave-breaking effects, thus relying on experimental data. Analogies are also assumed to quantify the roller dynamics and the energy dissipation. The scope of this paper is to review the different analogies proposed in the literature and to discuss current practices. A thorough survey is offered and a discussion is developed an aimed at improving the use of possible breaking proxies. The most recent data are revisited and scrutinised for the use of most advanced numerical models to educe the surf zone hydrodynamics. In particular, the roller dynamics and geometrical characteristics are discussed. An open discussion is proposed to explore the actual practices and propose perspectives based on the most appropriate analogy, namely the tidal bore.

In high-velocity chute flows, free-surface aeration is often observed. The phenomenon is called self-aeration or white waters. When the turbulent shear stresses next to the free-surface are large enough, air bubbles are entrained throughout the entire air–water column. A rapidly-varied flow region is observed immediately downstream of the inception point of free-surface aeration. An analytical solution of the air diffusion equation is proposed and the results compare well with new experimental data. Both experiments and theory indicate that the flow bulking spans over approximately 3–4 step cavities downstream of the inception point of free-surface aeration on a stepped chute. Further downstream the void fraction distributions follow closely earlier solutions of the air diffusion equation. The application of the diffusion equation solution to prototype and laboratory data shows air bubble diffusivities typically larger than the momentum transfer coefficient. The result highlights however a marked decrease in the ratio of air bubble diffusivity to eddy viscosity with increasing Reynolds number. The finding might indicate some limitation of laboratory investigations of air bubble diffusion process in self-aerated flows and of their extrapolation to full-scale prototype applications.

In open channel, canals and rivers, a rapid increase in flow depth will induce a positive surge, also called bore or compression wave. The positive surge is a translating hydraulic jump. Herein new experiments were conducted in a large-size rectangular channel to characterise the unsteady turbulent properties, including the coupling between free-surface and velocity fluctuations. Experiments were repeated 25 times and the data analyses yielded the instantaneous median and instantaneous fluctuations of free-surface elevation, velocities and turbulent Reynolds stresses. The passage of the surge front was associated with large free-surface fluctuations, comparable to those observed in stationary hydraulic jumps, coupled with large instantaneous velocity fluctuations. The bore propagation was associated with large turbulent Reynolds stresses and instantaneous shear stress fluctuations, during the passage of the surge. A broad range of shear stress levels was observed underneath the bore front, with the probability density of the tangential stresses distributed normally and the normal stresses distributed in a skewed single-mode fashion. Maxima in normal and tangential stresses were observed shortly after the passage of a breaking bore roller toe. The maximum Reynolds stresses occurred after the occurrence of the maximum free-surface fluctuations, and this time lag implied some interaction between the free-surface fluctuations and shear stress fluctuations beneath the surge front, and possibly some causal effect.

Hydraulic engineering is the science of water in motion, and mainly dealing with the interactions between the flowing fluid and its surrounding environment. The technical challenges are huge [2]. The levels of complexity are closely linked with the variety of water systems, the broad range of relevant time and length scales, the variability of water systems from droughts to gigantic floods, the complexity of basic fluid mechanics with non-linear governing equations, natural fluid instabilities, interactions between water, solid, air and biological life, and the total dependence of humanity on water [3]. The challenges are not only scientific but also geo-political, as discussed below. This special issue intends to cover some of recent progresses in understanding environmental flows in hydraulic engineering. In our history, water resources and water-related issues have been and continue to be present in numerous armed conflicts [2, 11]. A number of conflicts were directly impacted by natural events (typhoons, tsunamis, wind setup) [7], sometimes considered as natural catastrophes or ‘divine’ salvation depending upon the side. Historical man-made use of water resources included artificial droughts and floods. Droughts were created by diverting river courses and drying up surface and ground-water reserves: e.g., during the siege of Khara Khoto [12]. Artificial flooding was caused by the construction of a dam and its destruction, and the breaching of dykes [3]. Some related case was the bombing of the Sorpe and Mohne dams during the dam buster campaign in 1943 [13], and the anticipation of German dam destruction at the German-Swiss border to stop the crossing of the Rhine river by the Allied Forces during WWII [9]. Since WWII, international armed conflicts have been numerous, with increasing risks of conflict from competition for water resources and food security with prevailing climate change tendencies [6]. In water supply channels, the brusque operation of control gates may induce large unsteady flow motion called surges. Such a rapid operation of gates must often be restricted, although it may be conducted to scour silted channels and sewers. Herein a physical study was conducted under controlled flow conditions to study the turbulent mixing in the very-close vicinity of a rapidly opening/closing Tainter gate, with a focus on the unsteady transient mixing induced by the gate operation. The data suggested that the negative/positive surge generation was associated with large instantaneous free-surface fluctuations. The velocity measurements indicated significant variations in longitudinal velocity during the surge generation, as well as large fluctuations of all velocity components. The processes were associated with large Reynolds stress levels. A succession of rapid closure and opening of undershoot gates provided optimum conditions to scour silted canals, and the present results gave some detailed insights into the physical processes.

A sudden decrease in water depth, called a negative surge or expansion wave, is characterised by a gentle change in free-surface elevation. Some geophysical applications include the ebb tide flow in macro-tidal estuaries, the rundown of swash waters and the retreating waters after maximum tsunami runup in a river channel. The upstream propagation of expansion waves against an initially steady flow was investigated in laboratory under controlled flow conditions including detailed free-surface velocity and Reynolds stress measurements. Both non-intrusive free-surface measurements and intrusive velocity measurements were conducted for relatively large Reynolds numbers with two types of bed roughness. The data showed that the propagation of expansion waves appeared to be a relatively smooth lowering to the water surface. The wave leading edge celerity data showed a characteristic trend, with a rapid acceleration immediately following the surge generation, followed by a deceleration of the leading edge surge towards an asymptotical value: $$(\mathrm{U}+\mathrm{V}_\mathrm{o})/(\mathrm{g}\times \mathrm{d}_\mathrm{o})^{1/2}=1$$ for both smooth and rough bed experiments. The results indicated that the bed roughness had little to no effect, within the experimental flow conditions. Relatively large fluctuations in free-surface elevation, velocity and turbulent shear stress were recorded beneath the leading edge of the negative surge for all flow conditions. The instantaneous turbulent shear stress levels were significantly larger than the critical shear stress for sediment erosion. The present results implied a substantial bed erosion during an expansion wave motion.

While the energy dissipation rate for embankment stepped spillways was studied previously, the optimum design for aeration and air-water mass transfer is not known. Herein new air-water flow experiments were conducted on several stepped spillways with embankment dam slopes using with phase-detection intrusive probes. The present data were compared with previ- ous studies in terms of energy dissipation, flow aeration and air-water mass transfer. The air-water mass transfer was calculated based upon air-water flow measurements in terms of dissolvedoxygen.There-oxygenationrateswerecomparedwithpreviousstudiescomprising both conductivity and direct dissolved oxygen measurements. The comparison highlighted a monotonic increase of aeration efficiency with energy dissipation rate. All data were in good agreement independent of channel slopes, stepped configuration and sensor size. The data confirmed the effects of strong air-water interactions within the bulk of the flow for both energy dissipation and re-oxygenation performances.

A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising, and the bore front corresponds to the leading edge of the tidal wave in a funnel shaped estuarine zone with macro-tidal conditions. Some field observations were conducted in the tidal bore of the Garonne River on 7 June 2012 in the Arcins channel, a few weeks after a major flood. The tidal bore was a flat undular bore with a Froude number close to unity: Fr1 = 1.02 and 1.19 (morning and afternoon respectively). A key feature of the study was the simultaneous recording of the water elevation, instantaneous velocity components and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) estimates, together with a detailed characterisation of the sediment bed materials. The sediment was some silty material (d50 ≈ 13 μm) which exhibited some non-Newtonion thixotropic behaviour. The velocity and SSC estimate were recorded simultaneously at high frequency, enabling a quantitative estimate of the suspended sediment flux at the end of the ebb tide and during the early flood tide. The net sediment flux per unit area was directed upstream after the bore, and its magnitude was much larger than that at end of ebb tide. The field observations highlighted a number of unusual features on the morning of 7 June 2012. These included (a) a slight rise in water elevation starting about 70 s prior to the front, (b) a delayed flow reversal about 50 s after the bore front, (c) some large fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) about 100 s after the bore front and (d) a transient water elevation lowering about 10 min after the bore front passage. The measurements of water temperature and salinity showed nearly identical results before and after the tidal bore, with no evidence of saline and thermal front during the study.

The design floods of several reservoirs were recently re-evaluated and the revised spillway outflow could result in dam overtopping with catastrophic consequences for some embankment structures. Herein a physical study was performed on flat and pooled stepped spillways with a slope typical of embankments (θ = 26.6 ◦ ) and four stepped configurations were tested: a stepped spillway with flat horizontal steps, a pooled stepped spillway, and two stepped spillways with in-line and staggered configurations of flat and pooled steps. The focus of the study was on the flow aeration, air-water flow properties, cavity flow processes, and energy dissipation performances. The results demonstrated the strong aeration of the flow for all configurations. On the in-line and staggered configurations of flat and pooled steps, the flow was highly three-dimensional. The residual head and energy dissipation rates at the stepped chute downstream end were calculated based upon the detailed air-water flow properties. The results showed that the residual energy was the lowest for the flat stepped weir. The data for the stepped spillway configuration with in-line and staggered configurations of flat and pooled steps showed large differences in terms of residual head in the transverse direction. Altogether the present results showed that, on a 26.6 ◦ slope stepped chute, the designs with in-line and staggered configurations of flat and pooled steps did not provide any advantageous performances in terms of energy dissipation and flow aeration, but they were affected by three-dimensional patterns leading to some flow concentration.

Air–water flows at hydraulic structures are commonly observed and called white waters. The free-surface aeration is characterised by some intense exchanges of air and water leading to complex air–water structures including some clustering. The number and properties of clusters may provide some measure of the level of particle-turbulence and particle–particle interactions in the high-velocity air–water flows. Herein a re-analysis of air–water clusters was applied to a highly aerated free-surface flow data set (Chanson and Carosi, Exp Fluids 42:385–401, 2007). A two-dimensional cluster analysis was introduced combining a longitudinal clustering criterion based on near-wake effect and a side-by-side particle detection method. The results highlighted a significant number of clustered particles in the high-velocity free-surface flows. The number of bubble/droplet clusters per second and the percentage of clustered particles were significantly larger using the two-dimensional cluster analysis than those derived from earlier longitudinal detection techniques only. A number of large cluster structures were further detected. The results illustrated the complex interactions between entrained air and turbulent structures in skimming flow on a stepped spillway, and the cluster detection method may apply to other highly aerated free-surface flows.

In an open channel, a change from a supercritical to subcritical flow is a strong dissipative process called a hydraulic jump. Herein some new measurements of free-surface fluctuations of the impingement perimeter and integral turbulent time and length scales in the roller are presented with a focus on turbulence in hydraulic jumps with a marked roller. The observations highlighted the fluctuating nature of the impingement perimeter in terms of both longitudinal and transverse locations. The results showed further the close link between the production and detachment of large eddies in jump shear layer, and the longitudinal fluctuations of the jump toe. They highlighted the importance of the impingement perimeter as the origin of the developing shear layer and a source of vorticity. The air–water flow measurements emphasised the intense flow aeration. The turbulent velocity distributions presented a shape similar to a wall jet solution with a marked shear layer downstream of the impingement point. The integral turbulent length scale distributions exhibited a monotonic increase with increasing vertical elevation within 0.2 < Lz/d1 < 0.8 in the shear layer, where Lz is the integral turbulent length scale and d1 the inflow depth, while the integral turbulent time scales were about two orders of magnitude smaller than the period of impingement position longitudinal oscillations.

In natural waterways and estuaries, the understanding of turbulent mixing is critical to the knowledge of sediment transport, stormwater runoff during flood events, and release of nutrient-rich wastewater into ecosystems. In the present study, some field measurements were conducted in a small subtropical estuary with micro-tidal range and semi-diurnal tides during king tide conditions: i.e., the tidal range was the largest for both 2009 and 2010. The turbulent velocity measurements were performed continuously at high-frequency (50Hz) for 60 h. Two acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs) were sampled simultaneously in the middle estuarine zone, and a third ADV was deployed in the upper estuary for 12 h only. The results provided an unique characterisation of the turbulence in both middle and upper estuarine zones under the king tide conditions. The present observations showed some marked differences between king tide and neap tide conditions. During the king tide conditions, the tidal forcing was the dominant water exchange and circulation mechanism in the estuary. In contrast, the long-term oscillations linked with internal and external resonance played a major role in the turbulent mixing during neap tides. The data set showed further that the upper estuarine zone was drastically less affected by the spring tide range: the flow motion remained slow, but the turbulent velocity data were affected by the propagation of a transient front during the very early flood tide motion at the sampling site.

A positive surge is a unsteady open channel flow resulting from the rapid rise of the free-surface. The phenomenon may be observed in water supply canals and channels as well as in some estuaries during spring tidal conditions. The formation and development of positive surges can be predicted using the method of characteristics and shallow water equations. The paper is the second part of a study presenting the results from new experimental investigations conducted in a large rectangular channel. Detailed unsteady velocity measurements were performed with a high temporal resolution using acoustic Doppler velocimetry and non-intrusive free-surface measurement devices. Several experiments were conducted with the same initial discharge (Q = 0.060 m3/s) and six different gate openings after closure resulting in both non-breaking undular and breaking bores. A comparison between main features of the undular surges with literature theories demonstrated that the experimental data were mostly in agreement with Andersen’s theory. The analysis of unsteady flow field including Reynolds stresses confirmed and extended previous findings about positive surge hydrodynamics.

Also, undular wave period and wave length data were relatively close to the values predicted by the wave dispersion theory for gravity waves in intermediate water depths.

An open channel flow with a flow depth close to the critical depth is characterised by a curvilinear streamline flow field that results in steady free surface undulations. Near critical flows of practical relevance encompass the undular hydraulic jump when the flow changes from supercritical (F > 1) to subcritical (F < 1), and the undular weir flow over broad-crested weirs where the flow changes from subcritical (F < 1) to supercritical (F > 1). So far these flows were mainly studied based on ideal fluid flow computations, for which the flow is assumed irrotational and, thus, shear forces are absent. While the approach is accurate for critical flow conditions (F = 1) in weir and flumes, near-critical flows involve long distances reaches, and the effect of friction on the flow properties cannot be neglected. In the present study the characteristics of near-critical free-surface flows are reanalysed based on a model accounting for both the streamline curvature and friction effects. Based on the improved model, some better agreement with experimental results is found, thereby highlighting the main frictional features of the flow profiles. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

A tidal bore may occur in a macro-tidal estuary when the tidal range exceeds 4.5–6 m and the estuary bathymetry amplifies the tidal wave. Its upstream propagation induces a strong mixing of the estuarine waters. The propagation of undular tidal bores was investigated herein to study the effect of bridge piers on the bore propagation and characteristics. Both the tidal bore profile and the turbulence generated by the bore were recorded. The free-surface undulation profiles exhibited a quasi-periodic shape, and the potential energy of the undulations represented up to 30% of the potential energy of the tidal bore. The presence of the channel constriction had a major impact on the free-surface properties. The undular tidal bore lost nearly one third of its potential energy per surface area as it propagated through the channel constriction. The detailed instantaneous velocity measurements showed a marked effect of the tidal bore passage suggesting the upstream advection of energetic events and vorticity “clouds” behind the bore front in both channel configurations: prismatic and with constriction. The turbulence patches were linked to some secondary motions and the proposed mechanisms were consistent with some field observations in the Daly River tidal bore. The findings emphasise the strong mixing induced by the tidal bore processes, and the impact of bridge structures on the phenomenon.

A tidal bore is a natural and fragile phenomenon, which is of great importance for the ecology of an estuary. The bore development is closely linked with the tidal range and the river mouth shape, and its existence is sensitive to any small change in boundary conditions. Despite their ecological and cultural value, little is known on the flow field, turbulent mixing and sediment motion beneath tidal bores. Indeed, some striking features can be highlighted in two-dimensional simulations, such as large velocity fluctuations and flow recirculation structures. Using Large Eddy Simulation method, the numerical results emphasised the complicated turbulent structures and their unsteadiness under a tidal bore.

A tidal bore is a series of waves propagating upstream as the tidal flow turns to rising. It forms during the spring tide conditions when the tidal range exceeds 5–6 m and the flood tide is confined to a narrow funnelled estuary with low freshwater levels. A tidal bore is associated with a massive mixing of the estuarine waters that stirs the organic matter and creates some rich fishing grounds. Its occurrence is essential to many ecological processes and the survival of unique eco-systems. The tidal bore is also an integral part of the cultural heritage in many regions: the Qiantang River bore in China, the Severn River bore in UK, the Dordogne River in France. In this contribution, the environmental, ecological and cultural impacts of tidal bores are reviewed, explained and discussed.

Relatively little systematic research has been conducted on the turbulence characteristics of small estuaries. In the present study, detailed measurements were conducted in a small subtropical estuary with a focus on turbulent flux events. Acoustic Doppler velocimeters were installed in the mid-estuary at fixed locations and sampled simultaneously and continuously for 50 h. A turbulent flux event analysis was performed for the entire data sets extending the technique of Narasimha et al. (Phil Trans R Soc Ser A 365:841–858, 2007) to the unsteady open channel flow motion and to turbulent sub-events. Turbulent bursting events were defined in terms of the instantaneous turbulent flux. The data showed close results for all ADV units. The very-large majority of turbulent events lasted between 0.04 and 0.3 s with an average of 1 to 4 turbulent events observed per second. A number of turbulent bursting events consisted of consecutive turbulent sub-events, with between 1 and 3 sub-events per main event on average. For all ADV systems, the number of events, event duration and event amplitude showed some tidal trends, with basic differences between high- and low-water periods. A comparison between the present estuary data and the atmospheric boundary layer results of Narasimha et al. (Phil Trans R Soc Ser A 365:841–858, 2007) showed a number of similarities and demonstrated the significance of turbulent events in environmental flows. A burstiness index of 0.85 was found for the present data.

With the re-evaluation and revision of a number of design floods, several embankment overtopping protection systems have been developed and a common technique is the construction of a stepped spillway on the downstream slope. For such moderate slope stepped channels, detailed air–water flow measurements were performed in a large facility with a focus on the rate of energy dissipation, flow resistance, air–water interfacial areas and re-aeration rates. Past and present experimental results showed a significant aeration of the flow. The median dimensionless residual head was about 3 × dc for the 21.8° sloping chute and smaller than that for flatter slopes (θ = 3.4° and 15.9°). The flow resistance results yielded an equivalent Darcy friction factor of about 0.25 implying a larger flow resistance for the 21.8° slope angle than for smaller slope angles. The re-aeration rate was deduced from the integration of the mass transfer equation using measured air–water interfacial areas and air–water flow velocities. The results suggested an increasing re-aeration rate with increasing rate of energy dissipation. The stepped invert contributed to intense turbulence production, free-surface aeration and large interfacial areas. The experimental data showed however some distinctive seesaw pattern in the longitudinal distribution of air–water flow properties with a wave length of about two step cavities. While these may be caused by the interactions between successive adjacent step cavities and their interference with the free-surface, the existence of such “instabilities” implies that the traditional concept of normal flow might not exist in skimming flows above moderate-slope stepped spillways.

In hydraulic structures, free-surface aeration is commonly observed: i.e., the white waters. The air bubble entrainment may be localised (hydraulic jumps, plunging jets) or continuous along an interface (water jets, chutes). Despite recent advances, there are some basic concerns about the extrapolation of laboratory results to large size prototype structures. Herein the basic air bubble entrainment processes are reviewed and the relevant dynamic similarities are discussed. Traditionally, physical studies are conducted using a Froude similitude which implies drastically smaller laboratory Reynolds numbers than in the corresponding prototype flows. Basic dimensional analyses are developed for both singular and interfacial aeration processes. The results are discussed in the light of systematic investigations and they show that the notion of scale effects is closely linked with the selection of relevant characteristic air–water flow properties. Recent studies of local air–water flow properties highlight that turbulence levels, entrained bubble sizes and interfacial areas are improperly scaled based upon a Froude similitude even in large-size models operating with the so defined Reynolds numbers up to 5 E+5. In laboratory models, the dimensionless turbulence levels, air–water interfacial areas and mass transfer rates are drastically underestimated.

Many environmental problems are linked to multiphase flows encompassing ecological issues, chemical processes and mixing or diffusion, with applications in different engineering fields. The transition from a supercritical flow to a subcritical motion constitutes a hydraulic jump. This flow regime is characterised by strong interactions between turbulence, free surface and air–water mixing. Although a hydraulic jump contributes to some dissipation of the flow kinetic energy, it is also associated with increases of turbulent shear stresses and the development of turbulent eddies with implications in terms of scour, erosion and sediment transport. Despite a number of experimental, theoretical and numerical studies, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the physical mechanisms involved in the diffusion and air–water mixing processes within hydraulic jumps, as well as on the interaction between the free-surface and turbulence. New experimental investigations were undertaken in hydraulic jumps with Froude numbers up to Fr = 8.3. Two-phase flow measurements were performed with phase-detection conductivity probes. Basic results related to the distributions of void fraction, bubble frequency and mean bubble chord length are presented. New developments are discussed for the interfacial bubble velocities and their fluctuations, characterizing the turbulence level and integral time scales of turbulence representing a “lifetime” of the longitudinal bubbly flow structures. The analyses show good agreement with previous studies in terms of the vertical profiles of void fraction, bubble frequency and mean bubble chord length. The dimensionless distributions of interfacial velocities compared favourably with wall-jet equations. Measurements showed high turbulence levels. Turbulence time scales were found to be dependent on the distance downstream of the toe as well as on the distance to the bottom showing the importance of the lower (channel bed) and upper (free surface) boundary conditions on the turbulence structure.

The interest in air-water flows has not diminished in recent years, but it is accompanied by frequent citations of early, sometimes outdated articles. A basic issue is the inadequate, incomplete interpretation of air-water flow instrumentation by hydraulic engineers and researchers. This article comments on high-velocity air-water flow measurements by means of intrusive phase detection probes. This article focus on the bubbly flow structure of high-velocity air-water flow based upon measurements by means of intrusive phase detection probes. It is shown that some advanced post-processing techniques may yields expanded information on the air-water turbulent flow properties and bubbly flow structures. The outcomes demonstrate simple techniques in high-velocity air-water flow analysis.

In high-velocity open channel flows, free-surface aeration is commonly observed. The effects of surface waves on the air-water flow properties are tested herein. The study simulates the air-water flow past a fixed-location phase-detection probe by introducing random fluctuations of the flow depth. The present model yields results that are close to experimental observations in terms of void fraction, bubble count rate and bubble/droplet chord size distributions. The results show that the surface waves have relatively little impact on the void fraction profiles, but that the bubble count rate profiles and the distributions of bubble and chord sizes are affected by the presence of surface waves.

A hydraulic jump is characterized by strong energy dissipation and mixing, large-scale turbulence, air entrainment, waves, and spray. Despite recent pertinent studies, the interaction between air bubbles diffusion and momentum transfer is not completely understood. The objective of this paper is to present experimental results from new measurements performed in a rectangular horizontal flume with partially developed inflow conditions. The vertical distributions of the void fraction and the air bubbles count rate were recorded for inflow Froude number Fr1 in the range from 5.2 to 14.3. Rapid detrainment process was observed near the jump toe, whereas the structure of the air diffusion layer was clearly observed over longer distances. These new data were compared with previous data generally collected at lower Froude numbers. The comparison demonstrated that, at a fixed distance from the jump toe, the maximum void fraction Cmax increases with the increasing Fr1. The vertical locations of the maximum void fraction and bubble count rate were consistent with previous studies. Finally, an empirical correlation between the upper boundary of the air diffusion layer and the distance from the impingement point was derived.

In natural systems, mixing is driven by turbulence, but current knowledge is limited in estuarine zones where predictions of contaminant dispersion are often inaccurate. A series of detailed field studies was conducted in a small sub-tropical creek in eastern Australia. Hydrodynamic, physio-chemical and ecological measurements were conducted simultaneously to assess the complexity of the estuarine zone, notably the interactions between turbulence and environment. The measurements were typically performed at high frequency over a tidal cycle. The results provide an original data set to complement long-term monitoring and a basis for a more detailed study of mixing in sub-tropical systems. Unlike many long-term observations, velocity and water quality scalars were measured herein with sufficient spatial and temporal resolutions to determine quantities of interest in the study of turbulence, while ecological indicators were sampled systematically and simultaneously. In particular the results yielded contrasted outcomes, and the finding impacts on the selection process for key water quality indicators.

A tidal bore impacts significantly on the estuarine ecosystem, although little is known on the flow field, mixing and sediment motion beneath tidal bores. In the absence of detailed systematic field measurements, a quasi-steady flow analogy was applied to investigate undular tidal bores with inflow Froude numbers between 1.25 and 1.6. Experimental results indicated that rapid flow redistributions occur beneath the free-surface undulations, with significant variations in bed shear stress between wave crests and troughs. Dynamic similarity was used to predict detailed flow characteristics of undular tidal bores. The effects of periodic loading on river sediments, scour of river bed and flow mixing behind the bore are discussed. A better understanding of these processes will contribute to better management practices in tidal bore affected rivers, including the Styx and Daly rivers in tropical Australia.

Gas-liquid interface measurements were conducted in a strongly turbulent free-surface flow (i.e. stepped cascade). Local void fractions, bubble count rates, bubble size distributions and gas-liquid interface areas were measured simultaneously in the air-water flow region using resistivity probes. The results highlight the air-water mass transfer potential of a stepped cascade with measured specific interface area over 650 m-1 and depth-average specific area up to 310 m-1. A comparison between single-tip and double-tip resistivity probes suggests that simple robust single-tip probes may provide accurate, although conservative, gas-liquid interfacial properties. The latter device may be used in the field and in prototype plants.

This special issue on "Hydraulic Structures: A Challenge to Engineers and Researchers" regroups four papers based upon some presentations at the First International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures (IJREWHS'06) held in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal on 2-4 September 2006 (Fig. 1), and published in the workshop proceedings (MATOS and CHANSON 2006). The IJREWHS'06 workshop addressed conventional and innovative aspects of hydraulic structures design, operation, rehabilitation, and interaction with the environment. The main themes of the workshop embraced the hydraulics of dams and hydropower schemes, river structures, hydraulic structures in urban drainage and sewer systems, as well as coastal protection systems. This workshop provided an opportunity for young researchers and engineers, typically post-graduate students, but also young researchers and engineers in both public and private sectors, to present ideas, plans, and preliminary results of their own research in an inspiring, friendly, co-operative, and non-competitive environment. The publication of the workshop proceedings marked the conclusion of the event. The interest for the workshop proceedings was demonstrated by 2,000 proceedings downloads in first 9 months. Importantly it highlighted a worldwide regain of interest for hydraulic engineering and hydraulic structures (Fig. 2). Figure 2 shows a RCC gravity dam equipped with a stepped spillway, completed in March 2006. The four contributions of the special issue regroup a wide range of applications. The first paper deals with riprap protection for embankment dams. It presents a series of experiments conducted in a large-size facility. Different failure scenarios were tested and new design criteria are proposed for overtopping protection of earthfill dams. The second contribution reviews the assessment of the design parameters leading to the definition of the crest level of a coastal dike along the German North Sea. It recommends to enhance the reliability of the hindcasted wave parameters and to include, in the design process, an investigation of the effect of the medium term morphological developments. The third paper deals with the catastrophic impact of landslides in reservoirs. New experiments in a large size channel highlighted the usefulness of adequate physical modelling for a transient analysis of the integrated system, including slide ramp, reservoir and surroundings. The last contribution deals with high-velocity air-water flows commonly observed in dam spillways and outlets, and the measurements of their two-phase phase flow properties. Simple techniques are presented to yield detailed information on the air-water turbulent flow properties and flow structures.© Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2007.

A tidal bore is a hydrodynamic discontinuity propagating upstream in an estuarine zone with a funnel shape as the tide starts rising under spring tidal conditions. The transient sediment motion beneath tidal bores was investigated in laboratory under controlled flow conditions by measuring simultaneously the fluid and sediment particle velocities. Although no sediment transport was observed in the initially steady flow and in undular bores, a transient sheet flow motion was observed beneath the breaking bores. The sediment transport was initiated during the passage of the bore roller toe by the large longitudinal pressure gradient force, and the sediment particles were subjected to large horizontal accelerations. About 5 % of all particles were accelerated in excess of 1 g. The sediments were advected upstream with an average velocity close to the instantaneous fluid velocity. The time evolution of instantaneous particle velocity for each trajectory was analysed, using the starting point of particle trajectory corresponding to the entrainment point, and the end point to the particle stoppage point. The present data provided some quantitative data in terms of force terms acting on sediment particles beneath a tidal bore and their trajectory characteristics.
