Climate change and human activities have massively impacted the hydrological cycle. Thus, it is of the greatest concern to examine the effect of climate change on water management, especially at the regional level, to understand the possible future shifts in water supply and water-related crises and support regional water management. Fortunately, there is a high degree of ambiguity in determining the effect of climate change on water requirements. In this paper, the statistical downscaling (SDSM) model is applied to simulate the potential impact of climate on crop water requirements (CWR) by downscaling ET0 in the region of Western Maharashtra, India, for the future periods, viz., the 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s, across three meteorological stations (Pune, Rahuri, and Solapur). Four crops, i.e., cotton, soybean, onion, and sugarcane, were selected during the analysis. The Penman-Monteith equation calculates reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0). Furthermore, in conjunction with the crop coefficient (Kc) equation, it calculates crop evapotranspiration (ETc)/CWR. The predictor variables were extracted from the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis dataset for 1961–2000 and the HadCM3 for 1961–2099 under the H3A2 and H3B2 scenarios. The results indicated by SDSM profound good applicability in downscaling due to satisfactory performance during calibration and validation for all three stations. The projected ET0 indicated an increase in mean annual ET0 compared to the present condition during the 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s. The ET0 would increase for all months (in summer, winter, and pre-monsoon seasons) and decrease from June to September (monsoon season). The estimated future CWR shows variation in the range for cotton (− 0.97 to 2.48%), soybean (− 2.09 to 1.63%), onion (0.49 to 4.62%), and sugarcane (0.05 to 2.86%). The significance of this research lies in its contribution to understanding the potential impacts of climate change at a regional level. This study provides valuable insights into the expected changes in water demand for key crops. Economic development, population growth, and rapid urbanization are the reasons for an increasing generation of waste all over the world. Recently, the statistics showed that 2.1 million of tons municipal solid waste (MSW) was produced in 2016, which is estimated to enhance by 3.4 million tons in 2050. In recent times, municipal solid waste generation is dramatically increasing due to factors such as rapid urbanization, altered living standard, and increased population. These factors make the municipal solid waste management system complex and break the pollution-controlling strategies. So it necessitates the system to accurately predict the waste composition. Based on the waste classification, a suitable decomposition technique is preferred. Therefore, this paper proposed CMSOA optimized dual faster R-CNN based waste management system to accurately classify the waste composition. The proposed system is formed by hybridizing dual faster RCNN along with complex-valued encoding multi-chain seeker optimization algorithm (CMSOA). Various evaluation measures, namely accuracy, precision, recall, F-measure, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE metrics, are computed, and the case study analysis is conducted on the major five cities of Maharashtra. The comparative analysis is carried out for various approaches, and from the analysis, the results revealed that the proposed method provides better classification results than other methods. This paper summarizes the findings obtained in a monitoring study to understand the sources and processes affecting the quality of shallow and deep groundwater near central air conditioning plant site in Trombay region by making use of physicochemical and biological analyses. All the measured parameters of the groundwaters indicate that the groundwater quality is good and within permissible limits set by (Indian Bureau of Standards ). Shallow groundwater is dominantly of Na–HCO3 type whereas deep groundwater is of Ca–Mg–HCO3 type. The groundwater chemistry is mainly influenced by dissolution of minerals and base exchange processes. High total dissolved solids in shallow groundwater compared to deeper ones indicate faster circulation of groundwater in deep zone preferably through fissures and fractures whereas groundwater flow is sluggish in shallow zone. The main objective of this paper is to examine pollution threat, especially to the groundwater resources, around Tarapur industrial area (also called the Tarapur MIDC area) located on the Arabian Sea Coast in Thane District of Maharashtra State, India and suggest remedial measures that may also be relevant to other industrial areas on the Indian Sea Coast. One hundred and thirty one samples were collected from various sources, such as dugwells, borewells, dug-cum-borewells, effluent sumps, drainage channels (effluent channels), creeks and ocean, for chemical analyses. These analyses show that the area in general is characterized by hard water and high salinity hazard, possibly due to its proximity and hydraulic connection with the sea. Although the potability of groundwater is questionable in certain pockets, it is good enough for irrigation purposes at present. Low pH value and high heavy metal contents in the adjoining Muramba creek water is a matter of great concern and may be attributed to the indiscriminate disposal of industrial effluents to the drainage channels connecting the creek. Muramba Creek is well connected with the Arabian Sea, and there are evidences of seawater intrusion around this creek. Because of the fact that Muramba Creek is highly polluted, and is hydraulically connected with the dugwells and borewells surrounding the creek, it cannot be ruled out that the groundwater around this creek is susceptible to contamination. Unless measures are not taken immediately to stop the indiscriminate disposal of the solid wastes and liquid effluents in open ground and drainage channels, and measures are not taken to maintain the appropriate pH values at the effluent treatment facilities before their disposal, the problem would indeed be formidable one day, and it will be too late then for the authorities to take care of the resulting maladies. Few suggestions have been given for controlling and managing the industrial pollution around the Tarapur MIDC area. Lonar Lake is a highly saline inland water body created by a crater in Maharashtra, India. A rare occurrence of the colour change of lake water from green to brown and eventually to pinkish-red was observed in Lonar in June 2020. This phenomenon attracted the attention of researchers, academicians and interestingly legal fraternity to understand the causes of colour change. The literature studies coupled the phenomenon of colouration of water to three aspects: the presence of halophilic Halobacterium salinarum or an algal species of Dunaliella (Dunaliella salina) or oxidization of metals (Fe and Mn) present in water. A comprehensive study was done to understand and assess the change in the colour of Lonar Lake water. The green colour of the lake is primarily due to the dominance of chlorophyll-a pigment in the algae population. The stressed condition in June 2020 adversely affected the photosynthesis activity of Dunaliella sp. resulting in the red colouration of the species. This red colour of Dunaliella sp. is due to the formation of a pigment named carotenoid which is similar to that in halophilic bacteria. This pigment completely hides the green chloroplast, and water turns pinkish-red. This study describes detailed investigations of environmental and climatic parameters to determine possible causes of abiotic stress on the algae population of the lake. The major factors contributing to the stressed conditions are high dissolved solids, alkalinity and alkaline pH due to salts in the lake water due to evaporation losses and limited rainfall over the months. Small towns are becoming hotspots of pollution due to industrial, urbanisation, and domestic activities. Air pollution affects human health and it is also responsible for physiological changes in plants. Green belt development programmes are cost-effective for the minimisation of air pollution. In the present study, to calculate air pollution tolerance index (APTI) and anticipated performance index (API), samples of 25 plant species were collected from each area i.e. the industrial (I), urban (U), and rural (R) areas and analysed for different parameters. Amongst all three areas, APTI of Artocarpus heterophyllus (46.74), Calotropis gigantea (43.63), and Bauhinia racemose (42.11) have shown the highest values and these plants can act as an inhibitor of air pollution. Also, the APTI of Ocimum tenuiflorum has found to be the lowest (12.05, 11.32, 12.86) as compared to other plant species amongst the three areas. Statistical analysis reveals that values of R2 are consistent in case of total chlorophyll (TC) and ascorbic acid (AA). API index showed the efficiency of Calotropis gigantea (excellent), Artocarpus heterophyllus (very good), and Mangifera indica (very good) for the green belt development around the selected areas. It is recommended to plant above-mentioned plant species along the roadside by considering their air pollution tolerance ability and medicinal as well as economic importance. Furthermore, it is suggested to plant species of Artocarpus heterophyllus (jackfruit) and Mangifera indica (Alphonso mango) which will generate income source for the local government bodies (Ratnagiri Municipal Council), as the fruits and wood of these plants can be exported and sold. Drought is considered among the most perilous events with catastrophic consequences, particularly from the agro-economic point of view. These consequences are expected to exacerbate under the increasing meteorological aberrations due to changing climate, which necessitates investigating drought variabilities. This study presents a thorough spatiotemporal assessment of drought trends and variabilities over the agriculture-dominated Marathwada Region, Maharashtra, India. The precipitation data is extracted from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) gridded product, whereas actual evapotranspiration (ET) and Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) are obtained from Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM) datasets. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is used to characterize drought occurrences at multiple time frames, whereas non-parametric tests, i.e., modified Mann–Kendall (MMK) and Sen's slope (SS) tests, are employed to detect trends. The results reveal the region to be prone to droughts, and SPI at a longer time frame (i.e., 12-monthly moving frame) can capture drought occurrences better than the shorter time frames, which can be attributed to the lesser randomness in the time series in the longer frame. A mix of positive/negative trends of SPI series are found for the monsoonal months; however, they are relatively more concentrated towards negative ZMMK. Hence, the Marathwada Region can be inferred to have exhibited a relatively increased tendency towards drought occurrences. The seasonal differences in mean values and trends of rainfall, ET, and ESI are discussed in detail. Since the Marathwada Region has a monsoon-dominated climate with high agricultural importance, the information reported in this study will help in devising water management strategies to minimize the repercussions of droughts. Rapid expansion in urbanization and industrialization coupled with recent drought conditions has triggered unplanned groundwater development leading to severe stress on groundwater resources in many urban cities of India, particularly cities like Nanded, Maharashtra. In the quest of tapping drinking water requirement, due to recent drought conditions, people from the city are piercing through entire thickness of shallow basalt aquifers to reach productive deeper granite aquifers. Earlier reports from Nanded and surrounding districts suggest that deeper granite aquifer is contaminated with fluoride (geogenic). The study aimed to find out variations in fluoride concentration in shallow basalt (10-167 m) and deeper granite aquifers (below 167 m) and to find out the relationship between fluoride and other ions. Study suggests that concentration of fluoride in shallow basalt aquifer is within maximum permissible limits of Bureau of Indian Standards and deeper granite aquifer contains as high as 4.9 mg/l of fluoride and all samples from granite aquifers are unfit for human consumption. The groundwater from basalt aquifer is mainly Ca-HCOCl type, and from granite aquifer, it is Ca-Na-Cl type. The correlation plot between F vs. pH, Na and HCO shows a positive correlation and an inverse relationship with Ca in both aquifers. As recommendations, it is suggested that granite aquifers should not be tapped for drinking purposes; however, in drought situations, water from this aquifer should be blended with treated surface water before supplying for drinking purposes. Efforts may be made to utilize 1.35 MCM of rainwater from available rooftop, which is sufficient to cater for the needs of ~40,800 people annually. Most effective defluoridation techniques like electrolytic de-fluoridation (EDF), ion exchange and reverse osmosis may be adopted along with integrated fluorosis mitigation measures. This study compares the ambient air particulate matter (PM10) data of 15 different coal mine environments. For most of these mine environments, the monitoring was carried out by different researchers using respirable dust sampler (RDS) that separates PM10 by centrifugal inertial separation. At two sites - Padmapur and Ghugus (Chandrapur, Maharashtra, India) - mass inertial impaction-based sampler was used for PM10 monitoring. It is observed that the spatiotemporal average value of ambient air PM10 monitored using mass inertial impactor reports relatively higher values (240-372 μg/m) compared to those monitored using RDS (<227 μg/m). In order to realize the severity of mine area pollution, it is compared with PM10 values found in an urban area (Delhi, India). It is found that PM10 values in Delhi (using mass inertial impactor) are much higher (300-400 μg/m) than those reported for the mine environment. The data seems to indicate that the mine environment is relatively cleaner than urban air and therefore raises doubt about the appropriateness of using either mass impactor or RDS for PM10 sampling. Thane district is one of the most industrialized districts in Maharashtra. The heavy industrialization and the increasing urbanization are responsible for the rapidly increasing stress on the water and soil environment of the area. Therefore, an attempt has been made through comprehensive study on the groundwater contamination and soil contamination due to heavy metals in Thane region of Maharashtra. The area undertaken for the study was Thane and its suburbans Kalwa, Divajunction, Dombivali, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar. Industrialization and urbanization lead to generation of large volumes of wastewater from domestic, commercial, industrial, and other sources, which discharged in to natural water bodies like river and creek in this region. Groundwater samples and soil samples were collected from residential, commercial, agriculture, and industrial areas. Groundwater samples were analyzed for various water quality parameters. The analytical data shows very high concentration of total dissolved solids, total hardness, total alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand, chloride etc. Groundwater and soil samples were analyzed for ten heavy metals by inductively coupled plasma (ICPE-9000) atomic emission spectroscopy. The analytical data reveal that, very high concentration level of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and nickel throughout the industrial area. The random dumping of hazardous waste in the industrial area could be the main cause of the groundwater and soil contamination spreading by rainwater and wind. In the residential areas the local dumping is expected to be the main source for heavy metals. A comparison of the results of groundwater with WHO guidelines show that most of the groundwater sampling station are heavily contaminated with organic matter and heavy metals. Groundwater samples are heavily contaminated by arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and nickel. Similarly, the results of heavy metals in soil compared with Swedish soil guideline values for polluted soil show that soil samples collected from residential, commercial and industrial areas are heavily contaminated by arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and nickel. Stratospheric input and photochemical ozone formation in the troposphere are the two main sources determining the ozone levels in the surface layer of the atmosphere. Because of the importance of ozone in controlling the atmospheric chemistry and its decisive role in the heat balance of atmosphere, leading to climate change, the examination of its formation and destruction are of great interest. This study characterized the distribution of Ground level Ozone (GLO) in Chandrapur district is lying between 19°25′N to 20°45′N and 78°50′E to 80°10′E. Continuous ozone analyzer was used to quantify GLO at thirteen locations fixed by Global Positioning System (GPS) during the winter of 2005–2006. The daily GLO at all the locations ranged between 6.4 and 24.8 ppbv with an average and standard deviation of 14.9 ± 6.5 ppbv. The maximum and minimum concentration occurs during 1300–1600 h and 0300–0500 h may be due to high solar radiation facilitating photochemical production of O3 and downward mixing from the overlying air mass and in situ destruction of ozone by deposition and/or the reaction between O3 and NO. GIS based spatial distribution of GLO in Chandrapur district is indicates that the central core of the district and southern sites experienced elevated levels of GLO relative to the northern and western areas. The sites near by Chandrapur city are particularly affected by elevated GLO. The average variation of GLO with temperature shows a significant correlation of r = 0.55 indicating a direct relationship between GLO and temperature. Similarly an attempt has been made to compare the GLO monitored data in Chandrapur district with the reported values for other locations in Indian cities.
