As the population of urban areas is increasing continually, analysis of the particulate concentration dynamics in these areas is crucial. Therefore, this study investigated the temporal and spatial variabilities of PM 1 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 over the urban area of Turin in the Po Valley, Italy, based on high-resolution data from a monitoring campaign conducted between 2018 and 2021 (including COVID-19 lockdown period). The study also performed a source direction analysis of the urban observation using the conditional bivariate probability function (CBPF). The results showed substantial differences in PM 10 concentration at background (28-30 µg/m 3 ), and traffic stations (36 µg/m 3 ). PM 2.5 concentration was highest at traffic stations (24 µg/m 3 ). During the day, the highest values occurred at 9:00-11:00 AM, and the lowest concentrations occurred at 4:00-6:00 PM. The concentration peak position changed in a daily bimodal trend with the season. According to the CBPF, the relevant external particulate contributions to the Turin area are from the direction of the Po Valley (N-NE) and the typical direction of Saharan dust transport (S-SW). This study aimed to utilise cheap and abundantly available date palm fibre (DPF) wastes for the remediation of methylene blue (MLB) dye-contaminated groundwater. The DPF adsorbents were first prepared, followed by various characterisation analyses, including surface morphology, functional groups, and material structure. Subsequently, the DPF adsorbents were applied in the batch and continuous adsorption studies to assess the MLB dye removal from aqueous environments. The batch adsorption study achieved 98% maximum removal efficiency with a contact time, adsorbents dosage, initial pH, temperature, particle size, initial dye concentration, and agitation speed of 105 min, 3 g/L, 7.0, 45 °C, 0.075 mm, 50 mg/L, and 150 rpm, respectively. Langmuir was the best-fitted isotherm model depending on a higher correlation coefficient (R 2  = 0.985), with a maximum monolayer dye adsorption capacity (q max ) of 54.204 mg/g. Additionally, the second order was the best-fitted kinetic model (R 2  = 0.990), indicating that MLB dye was removed through chemisorption. Besides, the positive enthalpy change (ΔH°) and negative Gibb's free energy (ΔG°) values verified the endothermic process and spontaneous adsorption. According to the impact analysis of initial dye concentrations and flow rates on the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) performance in the continuous adsorption study using the Thomas, Belter, and Yan models, the experimental results and predicted breakthrough curves reflected an excellent agreement (R 2  ≥ 0.8767) and a sum of squared errors (SSE) ≤ 0.4834. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Iranian government swiftly implemented immediate and decisive measures to control the spread of the infection. This study aims to demonstrate the impact of restriction measure on air pollution, also to highlight the potential variability in results that can arias from different methodological approach. A comprehensive dual-approach assessment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the lockdown measures on criteria air pollutants. Firstly, a traditional approach compared air quality during the pandemic period with baseline conditions from 2013 to 2019. Secondly, observed air pollution values during different periods with varying restrictions in 2020 were compared with expected values. This comprehensive analysis allows for a robust comparison and quantification of the impact of different lockdown measures in Ahvaz. The study revealed significant changes in air pollutant concentrations in Ahvaz during 2020, with variations observed across different pollutants. Notable reductions were observed in O3 levels, particularly in November (-54.44% compared to the baseline) and December (-63.58% compared to expected values). Decreases in CO levels were observed in multiple months, while substantial reductions in PM10 and PM2.5 were observed during various periods. Inconsistencies in the magnitudes and directions of changes were found when comparing baseline and forecasted values. The overall stringency index showed an inverse association with changes in O3, NO2, and CO, with international travel controls and restrictions on internal movement having significant impacts. This study provides valuable insights into the impact of COVID-19 lockdown measures on air pollution in Ahvaz, Iran, using a comprehensive dual-approach assessment. Microparticles of anthropogenic origin, such as microplastics and microfibers, are pervasive pollutants in the marine environment of the world. These microparticles pollute water and can be ingested by biota; however, while microplastics are often monitored, very few studies focus on microfibers. Coastal areas, such as beaches, are more vulnerable to pollution due to their location between terrestrial and marine environments and their recreational and touristic functions. In this study, microparticle occurrence frequency was investigated along the Calabria coast, Italy, in one touristic beach in comparison with an unpopular one. High amounts of microparticles of anthropogenic origin were found in all sediment samples, despite the evident different tourist exploitation of the two examined beaches. Sediments of the most touristic beach had values between 729.5 ± 212.3 and 1327 ± 125.8 items/kg, instead, the less popular beach between 606.3 ± 102.8 and 1116.5 ± 226.9 items/kg (average and st. dev). Microparticle abundance varied before and after the touristic summer season, increasing in the most popular beach and decreasing in the unpopular one. Differences in microparticle abundance between foreshore and backshore were present too; however, statistical analyses did not show evident relations between microparticle abundance and the distance from the see. Grain size influenced the abundance of microparticles in sediments. Our results improve knowledge on microparticle pollution in marine environments, highlighting information about micropollution in coastal areas. Future studies are needed to understand better microparticle dynamics and ecological impacts in marine and terrestrial systems, implementing new strategies to monitor pollution state, enhancing the natural intermediate environments, and providing useful and sustainable measure of conservation., (© 2024. Urban forests face multiple human-mediated pressures leading to compromised ecosystem structure and functioning. Therefore, understanding ecosystem structure in response to ongoing pressures is crucial for sustaining ecological integrity and human well-being. We aim to assess the disturbance and its effects on the vegetation structure of urban forests in Chandigarh using a combination of remote sensing techniques and vegetation surveys. The disturbance was evaluated as a change in NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) from 2001 to 2021 by applying the BFAST (Breaks For Additive Season and Trend) algorithm to the MODIS satellite imagery data. A vegetation survey was conducted to compare the species composition, taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity as measures of forest vegetational structure. While signals of disturbance were evident, the changes in vegetation structure were not well established from our study. Further, this analysis indicated no significant differences in vegetation composition due to disturbance (F 1,12  = 0.91, p = 0.575). However, the phylogenetic diversity was substantially lower for disturbed plots than undisturbed plots, though the taxonomic diversity was similar among the disturbed and undisturbed plots. Our results confirmed that disturbance effects are more prominent on the phylogenetic than taxonomic diversity. These findings can be considered early signals of disturbance and its impact on the vegetation structure of urban forests and contribute to the knowledge base on urban ecosystems. Analysis of land use and land cover (LULC) change and its drivers and impacts in the biodiversity hotspot of Bale Mountain's socio-ecological system is crucial for formulating plausible policies and strategies that can enhance sustainable development. The study aimed to analyze spatio-temporal LULC changes and their trends, extents, drives, and impacts over the last 48 years in the Bale Mountain social-ecological system. Landsat imagery data from the years 1973, 1986, 1996, 2014, and 2021 together with qualitative data were used. LULC classification scheme employed a supervised classification method with the application of the maximum likelihood algorithm technique. In the period between 1973 and 2021, agriculture, bare land, and settlement showed areal increment by 153.13%, 295.57%, and 49.03% with the corresponding increased annual rate of 1.93%, 2.86%, and 0.83%, respectively. On the contrary, forest, wood land, bushland, grass land, and water body decreased by 29.97%, 1.36%, 28.16%, 8.63%, and 84.36% during the study period, respectively. During the period, major LULC change dynamics were also observed; the majority of woodland was converted to agriculture (757.8 km 2 ) and grassland (531.3 km 2 ); and forests were converted to other LULC classes, namely woodland (766.5 km 2 ), agriculture (706.1 km 2 ), grassland (34.6 km 2 ), bushland (31.9 km 2 ), settlement (20.5 km 2 ), and bare land (14.3 km 2 ). LULC changes were caused by the expansion of agriculture, settlement, overgrazing, infrastructure development, and fire that were driven by population growth and climate change, and supplemented by inadequate policy and institutional factors. Social and environmental importance and values of land uses and land covers in the study area necessitate further assessment of potential natural resources' user groups and valuation of ecosystem services in the study area. This study aims to examine the health effects of smog on different age groups in Gujranwala and its associated health effects. To achieve this, primary data was gathered through a questionnaire survey focused on health issues faced by elderly individuals during the smog season. The results of the survey revealed that older adults in Gujranwala are particularly vulnerable to a range of health problems during this period, including coughing, throat infections, irritated eyes, runny noses, shortness of breath, chest pain while breathing, wheezing, asthma, heart problems, and respiratory issues. In order to analyze the spatial distribution of these health concerns, spatial and geo-statistical methods were employed utilizing ArcGIS 10.5. By integrating field data and secondary sources, hotspot and cold spot zones were identified. Employing the statistical model within ArcMap 10.5, hotspot analysis was performed to determine areas with elevated air quality index (AQI) values and associated health problems. The application of the inverse distance weighted approach, incorporating the Z value, facilitated a visual representation of areas with heightened and reduced AQI and health-related issues. The study's outcomes underscore the prevalence of health challenges among older adults during the winter months in Gujranwala, particularly linked to smog-induced throat infections, irritated eyes, and runny noses. The research identified zones with escalated AQI values, encompassing regions such as Gujranwala, Chandaqella, Alam Chowk, Khali Shahpur, Sialkot Bypass, and Pindi Bypass. It was established that industrial pollutants and vehicular emissions are the primary contributors to smog in the area. Given the detrimental consequences of pollution on individuals of all age groups, it is imperative to take action to mitigate its impact. This can be achieved through addressing pollution sources, implementing effective emission control measures, and fostering public awareness. By adopting proactive measures, the adverse health effects of pollution can be minimized, thereby fostering a healthier and safer environment for the entire population. The degradation of ambient air quality is a pressing global concern, and India, as a developing nation, has witnessed a rapid surge in industrial activities in recent decades. This surge has resulted in numerous Indian cities ranking among the world's most polluted urban areas. Chandigarh, strategically positioned within the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP), has not escaped this distressing trend, experiencing a significant spike in air pollution levels. This study focuses on comprehending and addressing the air quality issues in Chandigarh, shedding light on the evolution of air pollution trends and their dependence on meteorological factors. Notably, the study reveals that, with the exception of O 3 , pollutant concentrations surge during the rice stubble burning season. These pollutants persist in the atmosphere for prolonged periods, exacerbating the situation during winter due to lower temperatures and heightened use of fossil fuels for heating by low-income households. In contrast, the wheat stubble burning period does not significantly impact pollutant concentrations. The study also identifies a spring peak in surface O 3 concentrations, attributed to favorable high temperatures that promote the photochemical reactions responsible for this phenomenon, a distinctive feature in South Asia and the Himalayas. An examination of the connection between pollutant concentrations and meteorological parameters underscores that elevated pollutant levels, except for CO, are linked to lower relative humidity and temperatures. This suggests that current development patterns have contributed to the escalation of air pollution in Chandigarh, necessitating urgent interventions to preserve the city's aesthetics and the health of its residents. Furthermore, to model and monitor pollutant behavior in Chandigarh, more extensive and extended studies are imperative. Both short-term and long-term investigations into the environmental and health impacts of air pollutants, including primary and secondary pollutants, are of paramount importance. This research quantitatively evaluated the diversity of plants to protect vulnerable species. To measure vegetation information, the appropriate sampling plot size was determined based on the canopy cover of the dominant species of the study area (1 m 2 ). Then, in each unit, sampling was done along 3 transects of 100 m. Along each transect, 10 plots with dimensions of one square meter were placed at a distance of 10 m from each other. In each plot, the type, life forms, frequency of plant species, and species density were recorded. Species diversity indices were calculated using Ecological Methodology software. The values obtained from these indicators were analyzed in SPSS 24 statistical software and using the F test. The results of the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the highest values of the species diversity indices are in the middle altitudes (ecotone) class. ANOVA of the richness, evenness, and heterogeneity indices in different altitude classes showed that the values of the richness indices were not significant, but among the indices related to the heterogeneity, the Hill index and all the evenness indices were significant. Comparing the numerical indices of our communities enables us to determine the impact of environmental stress in a single community to choose the best habitat among a similar group for conservation. A community that has high diversity and richness is important for conservation. Therefore, the authorities must prevent the destruction of the vegetation of the study area in connection with the implementation of principled and correct management by the potential of the region, but also to reduce the pressure of livestock grazing and carry out corrective and restoration operations, to turn these rangelands towards rich diversity., (© 2023. Chemically assisted phytoremediation is suggested as an effective approach to amplify the metal-remediating potential of hyperaccumulators. The current study assessed the efficiency of two biodegradable chelants (S,S-ethylenediamine disuccinic acid, EDDS; nitrilotriacetic acid, NTA) in enhancing the remediation of Cd by Coronopus didymus (Brassicaceae). C. didymus growing in Cd-contaminated soil (35-175 mg kg -1 soil) showed increased growth and biomass due to the hormesis effect, and chelant supplementation further increased growth, biomass, and Cd accumulation. A significant interaction with chelants and different Cd concentrations was observed, except for Cd content in roots and Cd content in leaves, which exhibited a non-significant interaction with chelant addition. The effect of the NTA amendment on the root dry biomass and shoot dry biomass was more pronounced than EDDS at all the Cd treatments. Upon addition of EDDS and NTA, bio-concentration factor values were enhanced by ~184-205 and ~ 199-208, respectively. The tolerance index of root and shoot increased over the control upon the addition of chelants, with NTA being better than EDDS. With chelant supplementation, bio-accumulation coefficient values were in the order Cd 35  + NTA (~163%) > Cd 105  + NTA (~137%) > Cd 35  + EDDS (~89%) > Cd 175  + NTA (~85%) > Cd 105  + EDDS (~62%) > Cd 175  + EDDS (~40%). The translocation factor correlated positively (r ≥ 0.8) with tolerance index and Cd accumulation in different plant parts. Although existing studies mainly focused on the air quality status in Bangladesh, quantifying the natural and manmade effects, the frequency of high pollution levels, and the associated health risks remained beyond detailed investigation. Air quality and meteorological data from the Department of Environment for 2012-2019 were analyzed, attempting to answer those questions. Cluster analysis of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and gaseous pollutants implied that Dhaka and neighboring cities, Narayangonj and Gazipur, are from similar sources compared to the other major cities in the country. Apart from the transboundary sources, land use types and climate parameters unevenly affected local pollution loadings across city domains. The particulate concentrations persistently remained above the national standard for almost half the year, with the peaks during the dry months. Even though nitrogen oxides remained high in all three cities, other gaseous pollutants, such as CO and O 3 , except SO 2 , showed elevated concentrations solely in Dhaka city. Concentrations of gaseous pollutants in Dhaka vary spatially, but no statistical differences could be discerned between the working days and holidays. Frequency analysis results and hazard quotients revealed the likelihood of adverse health outcomes in Narayangonj ensuing from particulate exposures surpasses the other cities for different age, gender, and occupation groups. Nonetheless, school-aged children and construction workers were most at risk from chronic exposure to gaseous pollutants mostly in Dhaka. Mongolia is a country with a quickly growing economy mainly based on mining of gold, copper, coal, and other minerals. Mining, urbanization, and agriculture impact the water quality in the upper Selenga River Basin in northern Mongolia, which is the center of the Mongolian economy. Previous measurements of pollution loads were alarming, but restricted to chemical measurements. Here, for the first time, we combine freshwater biomonitoring and laboratory water quality data across a broad gradient of water quality and land use intensity. We track the effects of different types of pollution on aquatic invertebrates and test their use as bioindicators. We collected water samples, environmental parameters, and macroinvertebrates at 36 sampling sites at the rivers of Tuul, Kharaa, and Orkhon and their tributaries Sugnugur, Boroo, Sharyn Gol, Gatsuurt, and Yeröö. PCA of catchment water quality distinguished three groups of pollutants prevalent at the sites: (1) nutrients, (2) saline components (Cl - , Na  + , Mg 2+ , SO 4 2- ) and mining by-products (B, Sr, U, Mo), and (3) (heavy) metals, which often exceeded regulatory standards. We recorded a total of 59 macroinvertebrate taxa belonging to 32 families in seven insect orders plus Amphipoda and Gastropoda. Species diversity declined with higher impact. Five environmental factors structured macroinvertebrate community composition in RDA: elevation of sample location, site total nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and water chemistry. We conclude that macroinvertebrate communities are an appropriate and inexpensive tool for monitoring water quality in Mongolia and suggest government action to establish a long-term monitoring program.2+ ) and mining by-products (B, Sr, U, Mo), and (3) (heavy) metals, which often exceeded regulatory standards. For the last few decades, air pollution in developing country like India is increasing, and it is a matter of huge concern due to its associated human health impacts. In this region, the burgeoning population, escalating urbanization and industrialization, has been cited as the major reason for such a high air pollution. The present study was carried out for health risk assessment of aerosol particles (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) and its associated heavy metals of an agriculture farm site at Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) considered to be green urban area in Delhi, India. The concentrations of both PM 10 and PM 2.5 varied significantly from 136 to 177 µg/m 3 and 56 to 162 µg/m 3 , respectively at the site. In the present case, the highest PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels were reported in January, followed by December. The levels of ambient PM 10 and PM 2.5 are influenced by wind prevailing meteorology. These levels of PM 10 and PM 2.5 are more than the permissible limits of WHO guidelines of 15 and 5 µg/m 3 , respectively, thereby leading to high aerosol loadings specifically in winters. The PM concentration of the atmosphere was found to be negatively correlated with temperature during the sampling period. The concentrations of surface ozone O 3 and NO x in the present study were observed to be high in February and March, respectively. The increasing air pollution in the city of Delhi poses a great risk to the human health, as the particulate matter loaded with heavy metals can enter humans via different pathways, viz., ingestion, inhalation, and absorption through skin. The mean hazard index for metals (Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Cr, and Ni) was observed within the acceptable limit (HI < 1), thereby indicating negligible non-carcinogenic effects to residing population. The carcinogenic risk assessment was conducted for Cd, Pb, and As only, as the concentrations for other metals were found to be quite low. The carcinogenic risk values were also within the limits of USEPA standards, indicating no carcinogenic risks to the health of children and adults residing near the site. This information about the PM pollution at the agricultural site and health risk assessment will serve as a baseline data in assessment of human health impacts due to air pollution at the local scale and can be used for development of mitigation strategies for tackling air pollution., (© 2023. Wetlands play an important role in conserving biodiversity, the hydrosphere's equilibrium, and the maintenance of daily livelihood; therefore, the trophic process hastens the succession procedure in them, resulting in structural changes in the landscape. The study aimed to monitor and investigate the impact of the trophic procedure on landscape structural changes in Anzali Wetland, specifically domains related to vegetation canopy and water bodies, over 24 years. The TSI (trophic state index) of the Anzali Wetland, a vital habitat in the south of the Caspian Sea, was estimated by using the Carlson TSI for 1994, 2002, 2014, and 2018. Based on satellite data for these years, the structural landscape changes were also measured using metrics such as the number of patches (NumP), class area (CA), mean patch size (MPS), and mean shape index (MSI) of the measured patch using in Patch Analyst. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was then used to calculate the correlation between the two variables of trophic index modifications and landscape metrics. Results showed that the TSI of the wetland touched 59.51 in 1994 and then reached 65.10 in 2018. Its water body area, which was 5283.90 ha in 1994, decreased to 4183.92 ha in 2018, indicating the greatest decrease in the area from 2002 to 2018. In addition, the maximum area of vegetation canopy in 2018 was 11696.31 ha. The trophic exhibited a positive correlation of 0.8 with the area of the vegetation canopy and a positive correlation of 0.4 with the NumP of the vegetation canopy. It also had an inverse correlation of -0.4 with the area and NumP of the water body. Wetland ecosystems provide critical ecological services to both humans and wildlife. However, many wetlands around the world are facing challenges that threaten their ecological integrity and jeopardize their status as Ramsar Convention sites. The Shadegan Wetland, a Ramsar site since 1975, has been on the Montreux Record since 1993 due to changing conditions in the wetland. This study aims to utilize linear programming (LP) techniques to evaluate the status of criterion IV of the Ramsar Convention within the Shadegan Wetland. Using mathematical language and Excel software, we defined criterion IV and developed a linear model. The Lingo software was employed to verify the model by setting constraints for proxy variables (X variables). We selected constraints based on extreme climatic conditions, such as energy and water limitations, during the study period while considering the trend of each variable. By identifying effective interventions for promoting sustainable use of the wetland while preserving its ecological balance, the LP can support the efforts to re-nominate the Shadegan Wetland as a Ramsar site. Considering the critical conditions, the lowest value of Z in the studied period unravels the critical year as the target. Based on the result, 2015 with the lowest value of the Z index (- 0.36) was identified as the critical year in the entire study period starting from 2001-2019. The 17 α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) adsorption from aqueous solution was examined using a novel adsorbent made from rice husk powder coated with CuO nanoparticles (CRH). Advanced analyses of FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDSwere used to identify the classification parameters of a CRH-like surface morphology, configuration, and functional groups. The rice husk was coated with CuO nanoparticles, allowing it to create large surface area materials with significantly improved textural qualities with regard to functional use and adsorption performance, according to a detailed characterization of the synthesized materials. The adsorption process was applied successfully with elimination effectiveness of 100% which can be kept up to 61.3%. The parameters of adsorption were affecting the adsorption process significantly. Thermodynamic data stated that the process of adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous, chemisorption and the molecules of EE2 show affinity with the CRH. It was discovered that the adsorption process controlled by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model demonstrates that the chemisorption process was controlling EE2 removal. Recently, for quick urbanization and industrialization, pollutants, especially urban dust, have posed many threats to the human environment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are regarded as the main dangerous pollutants that are widespread, persistent, and carcinogenic. The present work aimed to investigate the contamination and sources of PAHs, as well as to assess the risk of cancer for 16 priority PAHs, in urban dust samples in Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz cities in Iran. We measured PAH concentrations by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The average concentrations of the 16 PAHs in Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz were 6215.11, 7611.03, and 7810.37 μg kg -1 , respectively. The domination of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs was observed in Ahvaz, while maximum contribution was observed for high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs in Esfahan and Shiraz. For PAHs' source identification, diagnostic ratio, correlation analysis, clustering, and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were used. PAHs had a combustion (coal and wood, oil, fossil fuels) and gasoline/diesel engine emissions in all cities. Comparative studies suggest that the PAH compounds' level is higher in the research area than in other countries, except for China and India. Also, the pollution of urban dust PAHs has increased over time compared to previous studies in the same cities. The cancer risk from exposure to dust contaminated with PAHs was assessed using the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) model. According to the findings, a high risk of exposure to cancer was observed in Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz. However, compared to adults, children are at higher risk of cancer in their daily lives via dermal contact and unconscious ingestion. Based on the ILCR values, the risk of cancer is in the order of Shiraz > Isfahan > Ahvaz. To assess air pollutants and their effects on urban dust, TROPOMI onboard the Sentinel-5P data were used in the studied cities during 2018-2021. The results show that Ahvaz has different high levels of CO compared to the other 2 cities. Also, Isfahan has different high levels of NO 2 compared to the other 2 cities, but Shiraz has different low levels of O 3 . According to satellite time series data, the trend of the Aerosol Absorbing Index (AAI) has been increasing, while there was a decreasing trend in AAI from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic until 12 months later. Therefore, the natural and anthropogenic sources of urban dust PAHs have been increasing in all studied cities. The global attention on microplastics in soils, particularly in agricultural soils, has been growing. However, there is a need to investigate the impact of microplastics on the ability of agricultural soils to add and remove pollutants. To address this, a series of batch experiments were conducted to examine how high-density polyethylene microplastics affect the adsorption and desorption of lead in a field soil under different conditions. The equilibrium for both lead adsorption and desorption, with and without microplastics, was reached within 120 min. The adsorption kinetics of lead followed the quasi-second-order model, and the Langmuir model provided a more accurate fit for the adsorption isotherm compared to the Freundlich model. Generally, the addition of microplastics decreased lead adsorption but increased its excretion. The effects varied depending on the dosage of microplastics, particle size, and solution pH. Higher microplastic dosage and larger particle size resulted in a more pronounced reduction in lead adsorption and an increase in lead excretion, although these effects also depended on the solution pH. Analysis using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the adsorption lead on the surface of microplastics. Both types of microplastic samples, before and after lead adsorption, exhibited similar X-ray diffraction patterns, indicating that the microplastics maintained their high crystallinity and did not undergo any new crystalline phase formation. Consequently, the introduction of microplastics into the soil may enhance the mobility of lead by reducing the soil's adsorption capacity, thereby posing greater risks to the agricultural ecosystem., (© 2023. Using an integrated analytical hierarchy process, remote sensing and geographic information system techniques, the current study aims to map and identify the potential groundwater zones of Kurukshetra District of Haryana, which is located in the Ghaggar and Upper Yamuna Basins in India. This is done in the context of a significant change in the use of groundwater pattern, with respect to its continuously increasing demand due to the growing population, expansion of area under irrigation and related economic factors. The amount and quality of groundwater are anticipated to be impacted by anthropogenic activities as well as natural factors such as geomorphology, soil type, lithology and rainfall variance owing to a changing climatic scenario. The potential index of groundwater for this study was calculated by using nine important factors, including geomorphology, rainfall, soil type, depth to groundwater level, lithology, land use land cover, normalized difference vegetation index, cumulative sand thickness and elevation. The integration of multiple thematic layers was accomplished using the overlay weighted method to generate a potential groundwater zonation map and the accuracy of the resulting map was validated against a groundwater resource potential map. Statistical measures demonstrate an 82% agreement between the two maps, indicating a high level of concurrence. Accordingly, three groundwater zones of good, average and bad potential have been identified in the study area. In the current study, a process that combines weighted ranking with spatial data transformation and harmonization has been developed to obtain information for accurate decision-making. Antimony (Sb) has been classified as a high-priority contaminant in the environment. Sb contamination resulting from the use of antimony-containing compounds in industry necessitates the development of efficient methods to remove it from water and wastewater. Adsorption is a highly efficient and reliable method for pollutants removal owing to its availability, recyclability, and low cost. Recently, carbonaceous materials and their applications for the removal of Sb from the aqueous matrices have received special attention worldwide. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the occurrence and exposure of Sb in the environment and on human health, respectively. Different carbon-based adsorbents have been classified for the adsorptive removal of Sb and their adsorption characteristics have been delineated. Recent development in the adsorption performance of the adsorbent materials for improving the Sb removal from the aqueous medium has been outlined. Further, to develop an understanding of the effect of different parameters like pH, competitive ions, and dissolved ions for Sb adsorption and subsequent removal have been discussed. A retrospective analysis of literature was conducted to present the adsorption behavior and underlying mechanisms involved in the removal of Sb using various adsorbents. Grassland ecosystems are affected by the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme climate events (e.g., droughts). Understanding how grassland ecosystems maintain their functioning, resistance, and resilience under climatic perturbations is a topic of current concern. Resistance is the capacity of an ecosystem to withstand change against extreme climate, while resilience is the ability of an ecosystem to return to its original state after a perturbation. Using the growing season Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI gs , an index of vegetation growth) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (a drought index), we evaluated the response, resistance, and resilience of vegetation to climatic conditions for alpine grassland, grass-dominated steppe, hay meadow, arid steppe, and semi-arid steppe in northern China for the period 1982-2012. The results show that NDVI gs varied significantly across these grasslands, with the highest (lowest) NDVI gs values in alpine grassland (semi-arid steppe). We found increasing trends of greenness in alpine grassland, grass-dominated steppe, and hay meadow, while there were no detectable changes of NDVI gs in arid and semi-arid steppes. NDVI gs decreased with increasing dryness from extreme wet to extreme dry. Alpine and steppe grasslands exhibited higher resistance to and lower resilience after extreme wet, while lower resistance to and higher resilience after extreme dry conditions. No significant differences in resistance and resilience of hay meadow under climatic conditions suggest the stability of this grassland under climatic perturbations. Climate change and anthropogenic pressures have resulted in a significant shift in the invasion susceptibility and frequency of non-native species in mountain ecosystems. Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. (Family: Asteraceae) is an invasive species that spreads quickly in mountains, especially in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh. The current study used a trait-based approach to evaluate the impact of local habitat heterogeneity (soil physico-chemical properties) on C. arvense. Thirteen plant functional traits (root, shoot, leaf, and reproductive traits) of C. arvense were studied in three different habitat types (agricultural, marshy, and roadside). Functional trait variability in C. arvense was higher between, than within habitats (between different populations). All the functional traits interacted with habitat change, except for leaf count and seed mass. Soil properties strongly affect C. arvense's resource-use strategies across habitats. The plant adapted to a resource-poor environment (roadside habitat) by conserving resources and to a resource-rich environment (agricultural and marshy land habitat) by acquiring them. The ability of C. arvense to use resources differently reflects its persistence in introduced habitats. Events of climate change have led to increased aridification, which alters local vegetation patterns and results in the invasion of opportunistic species. Though many studies assess the impact of invasive weeds and aridification at the agronomic level, studies investigating changes in local vegetation are severely lacking. We investigated the impact of the invasive plant Verbesina encelioides (Asteraceae) on the local vegetation composition across different dryland ecosystems in Punjab, northwestern India. Based on the aridity index for the period of 1991-2016, three major dryland ecosystems, i.e., arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid, were found in Punjab. The impact of V. encelioides on local biodiversity was measured in terms of species diversity (using Shannon's diversity index, Simpson's dominance index, Hill's evenness index, and Margalef's richness index), species composition (using non-metric multidimensional scaling based on Bray-Curtis's dissimilarity index), and species proportion in the two invasion classes (uninvaded and invaded) and across the three aridity zones (arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid). The vegetation survey depicted the presence of 53 flowering species belonging to 22 families, including 30 exotics and 23 natives. Verbesina encelioides decreased species diversity and proportion, with a more pronounced impact in arid and semi-arid ecosystems. In contrast, species composition varied between uninvaded and invaded classes only in arid ecosystems. Ecological parameters derived from population statistics (number of individuals) were more drastically affected than those from species abundance data. Erosion by water is the main cause of land degradation. Landscapes degraded by erosion need to be restored in many respects, and particularly in terms of ecosystem services. From an economic and management perspective, care is needed to select priority areas and determine the means to be applied to restore them. Globally, the model most commonly used to produce scenarios for the prevention of soil losses is the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). This study of the subbasin of the Sulakyurt Dam Basin in Turkey aims (1) to identify the distribution of soil losses over time and by location, and (2) to grade the priority areas for the prevention of soil losses by means of a simulation. The average potential soil losses in the area under study are estimated at 42.35 t ha -1  year -1 , and the average actual losses at 39.49 t ha -1  year -1 . According to the simulation, 27.61% of the study area (2782 ha) is of the highest priority for soil restoration. In our study, forests have the highest soil losses, which is contrary to the natural protection that forests provide against erosion. The high rates are due to the slope, the forest area is very steep. So it is the slope factor that outweighs the vegetation cover factor. Of the forest areas, 41.74% (1766 ha) falls within the areas of highest priority. Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration (NF) are the essential physical separation technologies used to remove contaminants from liquid streams. A hybrid of nanofiltration and forward osmosis (FO) was used to increase the removal efficiency of heavy metals in synthesized oil effluents. Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were synthesized by applying surface polymerization on a polysulfone substrate to use in the forward osmosis process. The impact of different membrane fabrication conditions such as time, temperature, and pressure on effluent flux, the effect of different concentrations of the heavy metal solution on adsorption rate and sedimentation rate, the impact of TiO 2 nanoparticles on the performance and structure of forward osmosis membranes were investigated. The morphology, composition, and properties of TiO 2 nanocomposites made by the infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were studied. Kinetic modeling and Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tamkin relationships were used to draw adsorption isotherms and evaluate adsorption equilibrium data. The results indicated that pressure and temperature directly affect water outlet flux, and time affects it indirectly. Evaluating the isothermal relationships revealed that chromium adsorption from the TFN 0.05 ppm membrane and thin-film composite (TFC) membrane follows the Langmuir model with correlation coefficients of 0.996 and 0.995, respectively. Beta-agonist pharmaceuticals are widely used in humans and livestock for disease treatment, legal or illegal growth promotion in food animals, bodybuilding, weight loss, and sports doping. The occurrence of beta-agonists in wastewater treatment plants and their subsequent environmental impacts require greater attention. This study determined the levels of 12 beta-agonists in a wastewater treatment plant and evaluated their ecotoxicological risks as well as consumption levels and risks to human health. Among the 12 selected beta-agonists, all were detected in wastewater and 11 in sludge. In most cases, the concentrations of beta-agonists were higher in spring than in summer. Their total average daily mass loads per capita in the influent and effluent were 1.35 μg/d/p and 2.11 μg/d/p, respectively. The overall removal efficiencies of individual beta-agonists ranged from -295.3 to 71.2%. Ecotoxicological risk assessment revealed a low risk to daphnid and green algae from the levels of fenoterol and the mixture of 12 selected beta-agonists in the effluent. The daily consumption levels of individual beta-agonists per capita were 0.028-1.200 μg/d/p. Demographic outbursts and increased food demands invoke excessive use of pesticides in the agricultural field for increasing productivity which leads to the relentless decline of riverine health and its tributaries. These tributaries are connected to a plethora of point and non-point sources that transport pollutants including pesticides into the Ganga river's mainstream. Simultaneous climate change and lack of rainfall significantly increase pesticide concentration in the soil and water matrix of the river basin. This paper is intended to review the paradigm shift of pesticide pollution in the last few decades in the river Ganga and its tributaries. Along with this, a comprehensive review suggests the ecological risk assessment method which facilitates policy development, sustainable riverine ecosystem management, and decision-making. Before 2011, the total mixture of Hexachlorocyclohexane was found at 0.004-0.026 ng/mL in Hooghly, but now, the concentration has increased up to 0.465-4.132 ng/mL. For beekeeping to be sustainable, the management of colonies for the production of bee products must be economically viable without endangering the lives of bees, and must include acceptable practices such as the treatment of hives with appropriate products. Occasionally, the use of acaricides to treat the hives against varroosis is uncontrolled and can accumulate in the hives, putting the colonies at risk. In this work, a screening of seven acaricides was carried out in different apiaries in Andalusia (Spain). Their distribution in beeswax, brood, honey, and bees from colonies in different surroundings was evaluated at different times. It was found that beeswax was highly contaminated but honey, brood and bees had acceptable levels, below their respective MRL or LD50, after a certain period following varrocide treatments. The present study assessed the resilience model of Hyrcanian forests with Navroud-Asalem watershed as a case study. The Navroud-Assalem watershed was selected for study because of its special environmental characteristics and access to relatively acceptable information. In order to model resilience, the appropriate indices influencing resilience in Hyrcanian forests were identified and selected. The criteria of biological diversity and forest health and vitality were selected along with the indices of species diversity, forest-type diversity, mixed stands, and the infected area percentage forests with disturbance factors. Thirteen sub-indices and 33 variables were determined and the relationship between the indices and criteria was identified by developing a questionnaire using the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method. The weights of each index were estimated in Vensim software using the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. Collecting and analyzing the regional information, the conceptual model was developed and formulated quantitatively and mathematically and was entered into Vensim for resilience modeling of the selected parcels. The DEMATEL method indicated that the species diversity indices and the percentage of affected forests had the greatest influence and interaction with other factors in the system. The parcels studied had different slopes and were affected by the input variables. They were considered as resilient if they were found to maintain current conditions. Avoidance of exploitation, infestation by pests, severe fires in the region, and increased livestock grazing compared to the existing situation were among the prerequisites for resilience in the region. Vensim modeling represents that in control parcel no. 232 the nondimensional resilience parameter is 3025 (the most resilient parcel), while in the disturbed parcel no. 278 this amount is 1775 (the least resilient parcel)., (© 2023. This paper presents an assessment of the start-up performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) for the treatment of low-strength (chemical oxygen demand, COD < 200 mg/L) domestic wastewater by the application of a diatomite carrier. The feasibility was evaluated in terms of the start-up period and stability of the aerobic granules as well as COD and phosphate removal efficiencies. A single pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was used and operated separately for the control granulation and granulation with diatomite. Complete granulation (granulation rate ≥ 90%) was achieved within 20 days for the case of diatomite with an average influent COD concentration of 184 mg/L. In comparison, control granulation required 85 days to accomplish the same feat with a higher average influent COD concentration (253 mg/L). The presence of diatomite solidifies the core of the granules and enhances physical stability. AGS with diatomite recorded the strength and sludge volume index of 18 IC and 53 mL/g suspended solids (SS) which is superior to control AGS without diatomite (19.3 IC, 81 mL/g SS). Quick start-up and achievement of stable granules lead to an efficient COD (89%) and phosphate removal (74%) in 50 days of bioreactor operation. Interestingly, this study revealed that diatomite has some special mechanism in enhancing the removal of both COD and phosphate. Also, diatomite has a significant influence on microbial diversity. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are mistakenly consumed by people through their diet, including food and water. The occurrence, source, and health hazards of 16 PAHs in 36 tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) and silver catfish (Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus) samples from Okulu River, Nigeria were investigated in this study. The total PAH concentration ranged from 11.70-24.20 to 13.40-19.60 µg/kg, being statistically different between the two species. The values were higher than the European Commission limits of 12 µg/kg and within the World Health Organization limit of 20 µg/kg. The 16 PAHs were detected in both fish species. The diagnostic ratio revealed that petroleum, fossil fuel, and incomplete combustion of biomass wastes were the sources of PAHs in the fishes. Pearson's correlation showed that the PAHs can come from diverse sources. The non-carcinogenic risk quotients (HQs) and hazard index (HI) in both fish species were 1, an indication of no adverse health effects. Among the 9 PAHs that were used to calculate the HI, BaP and BgP accounted for 31% and 62%, respectively, for Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and 25% and 69%, respectively, for Sarotherodon melanotheron. The carcinogenic hazard of the 7 PAHs assessed was within the acceptable range of 10 -6 -10 -4 . But the sum of the carcinogenic hazard was on the order of 10 -3 in both species of fish, an indication of carcinogenic health effects. 79% and 75% of the total carcinogenic risk for Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus and Sarotherodon melanotheron, respectively, are from DaA and InP. Predicting potential fire hazard zones in natural areas is one of the means of mitigating and managing fires. The current research focuses on the prioritizing of elements which contribute to the spread of fire and the special zoning of potentially dangerous areas in addition to the pinpointing of locations for the establishment of fire stations in forested areas in the Shimbar national reserve based on historical data spanning 2001 to 2018. The study utilizes elements (physiological, vegetation cover, meteorological, anthropological factors) contributing to wildfires as inputs into an artificial neural network and the development of a fuzzy inference system in order to produce fire zoning maps for the region under study. The map is divided into five sectors, i.e., minimum, low, moderate, high, and maximum risk of fire. The validation of the fire zoning map was evaluated at 0.83 and the RMSE error was 0.75. The results obtained show that 20% of the area under study is within the average risk category, 11% is within the high-risk category, and 10% is within the very high-risk category of a potential fire hazard. The most important variables were distance from a flowing source, i.e., river or stream, the land formation type, elevation, and the minimum temperature. The identification of suitable locations for firefighting stations was carried out by merging the fuzzy inference system model and Arc GIS, and the results obtained defined 16 possible locations. It was concluded that the application of hybrid models when dealing with the aforementioned variables is effective when seeking to determine locations for the establishment of firefighting stations and rural safety services; moreover, such hybrid models are highly efficacious for determining of fire hazard zones. Models for land cover/land use simulation are appropriate and important tools for decision-makers, helping them build future plausible landscape scenarios. Due to the fact that the simulation results of different models may be different, it is sometimes difficult for users to choose a suitable model. Therefore, in this study, an integrated approach is used, combining the data obtained from remote sensing and GIS with Land Change Modeler (LCM) and Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) models to simulate and predict land cover/land use changes for 2028 in Karaj metropolis (Northern Iran as a poor region-in terms of data-which is under intense and rapid urbanization. In this sense, three land cover/land use maps related to the study area were primarily generated using satellite image data for the period 2006, 2011, and 2017. They were used as a basis to define two scenarios: business-as-usual (BAU) scenario and participatory plausible scenario (PPS) for 2028. Afterwards, the necessary input data used in running of both models were prepared and, then, the outputs of the models were interpreted and compared. According to the results, while human-made coverage and low-density grasslands increased by about 74% and 12%, respectively, it was from 2006 to 2017 that agricultural lands, gardens, and high-density grasslands decreased by 42%, 34%, and 7%, respectively. According to the business-as-usual scenario, which was projected using the LCM model, the increase in human-made cover will continue by about 29% by 2028, and the reduction rate of agricultural lands, gardens, and low-dense and dense grasslands will experience decrease by about 20%, 3%, 11%, and 9%, respectively. The participatory plausible scenario for 2028, which was defined using the InVEST model, confirmed the same results, but having different quantities. Accordingly, while human-made cover will increase by about 73%, the reduction rate of agricultural lands, gardens, and low-dense and dense grasslands will decrease by about 41%, 10%, 16%, and 1%, respectively. The output quantities of InVEST scenario model seem to be closer to reality with less uncertainty, because this model estimates the quantity of demand for land and its suitability for different uses, based on the views of different stakeholders, and considers landscape development future policies and plans. South Pars Industrial Zone is located near an Assaluyeh city on the coast of the Persian Gulf and is known as the energy capital of Iran. In this study, environmental and health effects due to PCB congeners had an assessment. In this study, 10 air stations, 10 seawater, and sediments stations were systematically selected and sampled in two seasons. Air, seawater, and sediment pollution made by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were evaluated. Seawater-sediment exchange conditions using the fugacity coefficient reviewed. PCB levels in marine sediments, seawater, and air based on the analysis of the obtained data were 107.33-172.92 ng/g, ND-135.68 ng/L, and ND-4.4 ng/m 3 , respectively. The highest concentration was observed in the vicinity of refineries, petrochemicals, and petroleum export facilities. These values had increased significantly compared to values of studies, conducted in similar areas. The sources were electrical wastes, storage sites, power generation units, and wastewater treatment. The ecological risk of seawater was assessed to be low to high, while sediment risks were reported with a low to moderate risk range. In 70% of the stations, the predominant transfer was from sediments to seawater; sediments were in fact the secondary source of seawater pollution. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with multi-sensors are one of the most innovative technologies for measuring plant health and predicting final yield in field conditions, especially in the water deficit situation in rain-deprived regions. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the individual plant and canopy-level measurements using UAV imageries in three different genotypes, Suwan4452 (drought-tolerant), Pac339, and S7328 (drought-sensitive) of maize (Zea mays L.) at vegetative and reproductive stages under WW (well-watered) and WD (water deficit) conditions. At the vegetative stage, only CWSI (crop water stress index) of Pac339 and S7328 under WD increased significantly by 1.86- and 1.69-fold over WW, whereas the vegetation indices (EVI2 (Enhanced Vegetation Index 2), OSAVI (Optimized Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index), GNDVI (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), NDRE (Normalized Difference Red Edge Index), and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)) derived from UAV multi-sensors did not vary. At the reproductive stage, CWSI in drought-sensitive genotype (S7328) under WD increased by 1.92-fold over WW. All the vegetation indices (EVI2, OSAVI, GNDVI, NDRE, and NDVI) of Pac339 and S7328 under WD decreased when compared with those of Suwan4452. NDVI derived from GreenSeeker ® handheld and NDVI from UAV data was closely related (R 2  = 0.5924). An increase in leaf temperature (T leaf ) and reduction in NDVI of WD stressed maize plants was observed (R 2  = 0.5829) leading to yield loss (R 2  = 0.5198). In summary, a close correlation was observed between the physiological data of individual plants and vegetation indices of canopy level (collected using a UAV platform) in drought-sensitive genotypes of maize crops under WD conditions, thus indicating its effectiveness in the classification of drought-tolerant genotypes., (© 2022. Amirkalayeh Wetland, listed as wetlands of International Importance in the Ramsar Convention, exposes to severe water quality stress resulted from increase in dissolved ions and nutrients concentrations. In addition to in situ measurements of physicochemical parameters (electrical conductivity, pH, and temperature), a total number of 28 water samples were collected from Amirkalayeh Wetland and surrounding surface and groundwater resources to investigate the most important factors increasing trophic state and decreasing the water quality of the wetland. Water samples were analyzed for major ions and dissolved plant nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and phosphate). Up to three-time increase in salinity and dramatic rising in nutrients level was observed in Amirkalayeh Wetland from 2017 to 2021. The excessive nutrients intake resulted in hyper-eutrophication trophic status of Amirkalayeh Wetland. Our hydrological, hydrochemical, and statistical studies investigating the role of a variety of possible water quality degrading factors show that surface and subsurface drainage of agricultural return water into the Amirkalayeh Wetland are the major cause of increase in trophic level and decreasing water quality. Results of this work indicate that Amirkalayeh Wetland is exposed to severe water quality stress that threatens the aquatic life and ecosystem of this wetland. Coal-powered thermal plants are the primary source of energy production around the globe. More than half (56.89%) of the Indian power plants use coal for power production. Coal burning in power plants results in coal combustion residuals, which contain coal fly ash (CFA) that is recognized as principle by-product. CFA is difficult to characterize due to its broad compositional variation. Hence, the present article summarizes the various physical, chemical, mineralogical, and petrological characterizations of CFA to its use in different applications. Indian coal thermal power plants are found to release two types of CFA: F (fine) and C (coarse). CFA particles are identified as unburned carbon particles with a large fraction of silica oxides, alumina oxides, and iron oxides with a small fraction of calcium oxide (CaO). Morphologically, CFA particles are spherical, with large carbon molecules and a smooth texture surface. In terms of mineralogy; quartz, mullite, magnetite, and hematite are the dominant mineral phases of CFA and tend to be non-plastic, with permeability levels ranging from 8 × 10 -6 to 1.87 × 10 -4 cms -1 . Petrographically, CFA is enriched in inertinite and liptinites as well as collotelinite, collodetrinite, and vitrodetrinite particles. Moreover, CFA is found to be composed of various organic and inorganic particles. By virtue of multiple characterizations, it has been utilized in several applications for decades, which is still quite limited. Despite the importance of transboundary water management, cooperation mechanisms are limited, especially in the case of Mekong River basin where environmental and social aspects are threatened by recent anthropogenic pressures like hydropower development. Existing transboundary mechanism such as the Mekong River Commission (MRC) is challenged to facilitate the cooperation between riparian states. An epistemic community (EC) is considered to effectively influence international governance and is studied as part of transboundary river regimes. The existence of an MRC EC is part of that regime but understanding about its characteristics is yet limited. This research aims to fill in the gap by unraveling the main features of the EC in relation to hydropower development. We analyze shared causal beliefs and policy goals that developed in the EC framework of Haas applying literature review and semi-structured interviews of experts. Results show that the community experts share causal beliefs and policy goals only to a limited extent while disagreeing on many aspects. It resembles a "disciplined" or "professional" group rather than an EC. This suggests that the knowledge factor has not gained proper influence and attention in the region, resulting in incoherent policy advice leading to policymakers developing policies based on incomplete and fragmented knowledge. The role of the MRC in the decision-making process could become more relevant if it would facilitate the development of an EC. Bringing key stakeholders including policymakers and experts into a platform where policy goals and causal beliefs are facilitated to reach possible consensus is recommended. Narrowing the science-policy gap while acknowledging differences in interests and policy objectives is crucial to reach a sustainable transboundary management of the Mekong River given its rapid development, especially on hydropower., (© 2022. The accent of the present study is determination of Urban Aerosol Pollution Island (UAPI) intensity and spatial variability in particulate matter concentration (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) over Delhi. For analysis, the hourly concentration dataset of PM 2.5 and PM 10 from January 2019 to December 2020 was obtained from ten air quality monitoring stations of Delhi. Additionally, UAPI Index has been calculated to assess the intensity of particulate pollution. The daily, monthly, and annual variations in the trends of PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and UAPI index along with related meteorological parameters have been analyzed. Particulate pollution peaked majorly during two seasons, i.e., summer and winter. The highest concentration of PM 10 was observed to be 426.77 µg/m 3 while that of PM 2.5 was observed to be 301.91 µg/m 3 in January 2019 for traffic-affected regions. During winters, higher PM 2.5 concentration was observed which can be ascribed to increased local emissions and enhanced secondary particle formations. While the increase in PM 10 concentrations led to an increment in pollution episodes during summers over most of the sites in Delhi. The UAPI index was found to be declining in 2020 over traffic affected regions (77.92 and 27.22 for 2019 and 2020, respectively) as well as in the background regions (64.91 and 19.80 for 2019 and 2020, respectively) of Delhi. Low traffic intensity and reduced pollutant emission could have been responsible for the reduction of UAPI intensity in the year 2020. Mercury (Hg) concentrations in soils and Hg releases from soils during wildfires are not well characterised in Portugal, even though wildfire activity continues to increase around the Mediterranean. This study focused on the low to moderate severity wildfire in Pombal (Portugal) in 2019, which consumed 12.5 ha of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.). We evaluated Hg concentrations in soil profiles and Hg pools in organic horizons to assess the fire-induced Hg emissions. Moreover, impacts of the fire on forest floor properties were estimated. Four soil profiles were sampled, two at the burned area and two at a nearby unburned area. The soil profiles displayed a typical Hg distribution, with higher Hg concentrations (156 µg kg -1 ) in the organic horizons with a sharp decrease in the mineral layers. The bond between organic matter and Hg was evident along the profiles, with a strong correlation between TOC and Hg. Ratios of Hg/TOC in the surface layers of the soil were similar in all profiles. The mean organic Hg pool at the studied site was calculated at 10.6 g ha -1 . The fire did not seem to affect the topsoil properties based on visual indicators and the lack of statistical differences (p > 0.05) among measured fire-sensitive chemical soil properties (pH, CEC, TOC, TS) between the topsoils of the burned and unburned areas. If we consider a hypothetical complete combustion of the organic layer (743 Mg) and unaffected topsoil, we estimated a release of 133 g of Hg from the burned area. This study provides a framework for optimizing ecosystem service zones based on landscape patterns. Ecosystem service zoning is a tool for making more informed land-use decisions and integrating ecosystem services into land development strategies. Accordingly, a meta-heuristic algorithm (simulated annealing-genetic hybrid) was applied to optimize zones of three ecosystem services, including aesthetic value, recreation value, and noise pollution reduction service. The goal was to select ecosystem service zones in terms of area, percentage of landscape, shape, and number of patches in two land-use types, including the built-up and green cover. The results indicated that optimum zones based on green infrastructure comprised more extent and average suitability than human infrastructure. The western and southern parts of the target area showed the highest values of ecosystem services for the two land-use classes. The convergence curve of the objective functions indicated the good performance of the employed algorithm in optimizing ecosystem service zones. Overall, the results indicated that optimizing ecosystem service zones based on landscape patterns improved the land-use management framework in the study area. This study was conducted to find out characteristics of trace element levels and those impacts to organisms at a former uranium (U) mining site. Concentrations of trace elements (Li, Mg, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Cs, Ba, Pb, Bi, and U) were determined in sediments, water, and three organism types (insects, frogs, and newts) from three zones in the former U mining site, Ningyo-toge in Japan. Concentrations of As and U in the sediments and water samples were the highest at the mill tailings pond (MP) site, where post-U extraction remnants have been accumulated. Additionally, among the organisms analyzed the highest concentrations of these elements/isotopes were found in newts from MP. Considering data analyses of the whole-body element concentrations, bioaccumulation factors, and δ 15 N values for the organisms, it was concluded that newts might be the most vulnerable species in this location. Coal thermal power plants are the dominant factor in producing various hazardous elements in surrounding surface soil, resulting in a significant human health hazard. In the current study, the seasonal (pre- and post-monsoon) concentration of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in surface soil around coal power production unit was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The possible health risks throughout multiple exposure routes, i.e., ingestion, dermal, and inhalation were estimated for adult and children. Furthermore, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), pollution factor (CF), ecological risk index, and pollution load index (PLI) were applied to interpret the environmental pollution in the study area. The geospatial distribution pattern was computed to understand the trace and hazardous element distribution in the surface soil. As a result, the concentration of Fe (mg/kg) in pre-monsoon (15,620) and post-monsoon (27,180), Ni (mg/kg) in pre-monsoon (19.8), and post-monsoon (81.7) was found above the standard limits of soil prescribed by the WHO and FAO. Enrichment factor was observed between 0.95-6948 (pre-monsoon) and 0.53-116.09 (post-monsoon). The ecological risk index was found moderate to considerable for As and Cd metals during both seasons. In addition, the average PLI value was observed high for both seasons indicating the contamination of the study area with heavy metals. Understanding the impact of management interventions on the environment over decadal and longer timeframes is urgently required. Longitudinal or large-scale studies with consistent methods are best practice, but more commonly, small datasets with differing methods are used to achieve larger coverage. Changes in methods and interpretation affect our ability to understand data trends through time or across space, so an ability to understand and adjust for such discrepancies between datasets is important for applied ecologists. Calibration or double sampling is the key to unlocking the value from disparate datasets, allowing us to account for the differences between datasets while acknowledging the uncertainties. We use a case study of livestock grazing impacts on riparian vegetation in southeastern Australia to develop a flexible and powerful approach to this problem. Using double sampling, we estimated changes in vegetation attributes over a 12-year period using a pseudo-quantitative visual method as the starting point, and the same technique plus point-intercept survey for the second round. The disparate nature of the datasets produced uncertain estimates of change over time, but accounting for this uncertainty explicitly is precisely the objective and highlights the need to look more closely at this very common problem in environmental management, as well as the potential benefits of the double sampling approach., (© 2022. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) are a challenging group of volatile organic compounds in industrial and energy areas. Since these aromatics may cause serious diseases such as cancer and respiratory illnesses, they must be monitored. Pars Special Economic Energy Zone (PSEEZ) in Iran is the second largest energy zone of the world with numerous gas refineries and petrochemical complexes for producing a wide range of products. This study is focused on determination of BTEX concentration in the whole South Pars area (46 sampling points) which is the active site of PSEEZ using passive sampling. Then, the results of the passive sampling are used for providing spatial distribution of BTEX using GIS. The annual BTEX measurements revealed that benzene and toluene concentration violates the maximum permitted values at numerous points most of which are located in the vicinity of petrochemical complexes. Active sampling in these complexes not only confirms the results of passive sampling, but also suggests a more intensified BTEX pollution in the air quality of the area which reaches as high as 3500 μg.m -3 and 18,000 μg.m -3 for benzene and toluene, respectively, being far beyond the acceptable standards. Health risk analysis also confirms the intensity of BTEX at the selected points. This study suggests a reconsideration of the location of non-operational sites and personnel who are more vulnerable to BTEX contamination. This research aimed to determine the background and precautionary values of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Co, As, and Hg and provide the spatial distribution of these metals in Albania's soils using statistical and geostatistical methods. Since the distribution of the data was commonly not Gaussian, they were transformed into their natural logarithm for deriving background concentrations and precautionary values. Background concentrations were defined as antilog of the median. Precautionary concentration values for soil protection were defined as antilog of 90th percentile of the ln-transformed data. Background concentrations in forest soils were larger compared to those in soils under other land use types. The largest background concentrations for Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Co, and Zn were found in forest soils formed on magmatic rocks, while largest concentrations of Pb and Hg were found in soils formed on flysch and molasse. The background values and precautionary concentration values (in brackets) (mg kg -1 ) for agricultural soils across flysch/molasses and quaternary deposits were as follows: Cd 0.24 (0.82), Cr 131.63 (527.42), Cu 41.26 (72.75), Ni 287.15 (632.70), Pb 19.11 (284.86), Zn 81.80 (113.90). The largest background values for Cd and Zn were found in Phaeozems, for Cr, Pb, and Co in Luvisols and Cambisols, and for Cu, Hg, and Ni in Fluvisols. The proposed background concentrations and precautionary values complete the picture of metal contents in European soils, can be used as reference concentrations for the Albanian environmental legislation, and allow the identification of potential contamination hot spots., (© 2022. The quality of surface and groundwater are fundamental concerns. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 80% of diseases are waterborne. This percentage mostly lies in developing nations and underdeveloped countries. Determining the relationship between land-use patterns and groundwater quality changes is one of the methods to evaluate the impact of land-use on the hydrological condition of each region which ultimately assists in managing natural resources. In the present study, the spatial-temporal model via satellite images of Landsat TM, ETM, and OLI for2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017 are used to investigate all these modalities in Shahriar Plain, Tehran, Iran. Following image processing and analysis, the land-uses of the study area are classified into urban, farming, and bare lands. In order to assess the water quality of the study area, the periodic sampling data of piezometric wells in the plain were used from 2002 to 2017. Based on the US Salinity Laboratory (USSL) diagram, water qualities for agricultural uses are classified. Results demonstrated that land area has changed over time indicating an increase in urban land area and declines in agricultural and bare lands. Additionally, the results of the groundwater quality indicated C3S1 class in the second and third periods have increased to 3.58% (1025.93 ha) and 12.82% (9367.85 ha) while C2S1 class has been decreased in second and third periods to 3.58 and 12.82%. Today, problems of treating wastewater spent caustic produced by refinery units with high toxic compounds and chemical oxygen demand (COD) become concerns of many managers of these industries and environmental experts. Hence, emission without application of treatment methods will have adverse environmental impacts. In this study, two direct acid neutralization (DAN) and wet air oxidation (WAO) processes were selected to treatment the wastewater of the Bandar Abbas oil refinery in southern Iran. The aim was to reduce COD and harmful substances, compare the two methods, optimize processes, and evaluate their performance. Experimental experiments were performed in a reactor system with different input variables related to two different methods. Parameter optimization was performed based on Box-Behnken (BBD) method and Design Expert software. The analysis of the results based on statistical methods and response procedure diagrams was used to evaluate the status of COD changes to the parameters. The best operating conditions of temperature, pressure, residence time, and stoichiometric coefficient of air were 148.269 °C, 15.716 bar, 3.563 h, and 8.415 l/h respectively in WAO with 68% reduction in COD, and for DAN process, temperature, pH, and agitation speed were 30.082 °C, 2.008, and 203.672 rpm, respectively, with 43% reduction in COD. Results of rapid impact assessment matrix (RIAM) showed that WAO process with a higher score is a more environmentally friendly method and DAN process has been considered by experts due to its popularity, ease of testing, less equipment requirements, and lower cost., (© 2021. This paper assesses the long-term combined effects of land use (LU) and climate change on river hydrology and water scarcity of two rivers of the Western Ghats of India. The historical LU changes were studied for four decades (1988-2016) using the maximum likelihood algorithm and the long-term LU (2016-2075) was estimated using the Dyna-CLUE prediction model. Five General Circulation Models (GCMs) were utilized to assess the effects of climate change (CC) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used for hydrological modeling of the two river catchments. To characterize granular effects of LU and CC on regional hydrology, a scenario approach was adopted and three scenarios depicting near-future (2006-2040), mid-future (2041-2070), and far-future (2071-2100) based on climate were established. The present rate of LU change indicated a reduction in forest cover by 20% and an increase in urbanized areas by 9.5% between 1988 and 2016. It was estimated that forest cover in the catchments may be expected to halve compared to the present-day LU (55% in 2016 to 23% in 2075), along with large-scale conversion to agricultural lands (13.5% in 2016 to 49.5% in 2075). As a result of changes to LU and forecasted climate, it was found that rivers in the Western Ghats of India might face scarcity of fresh water in the next two decades until the year 2040. However, because of large-scale LU conversion toward the year 2050, streamflow in rivers might increase as high as 70.94% at certain times of the year. Although an increase in streamflow is perceived favorable, the streamflow changes during summer and winter may be expected to affect the cropping calendar and crop yield.
