Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial products extensively used in the past. Because of their widespread presence and toxic effects, the international community adopted control measures to reduce their release into the environment. Currently, PCB concentrations are decreasing, but humans are still exposed. In this paper, we reported the results of a study concerning PCB concentrations in human serum samples collected in Italy over two decades. The aim of the study was to investigate the trend of major determinants of PCB human exposure, several decades after the end of their production. PCB concentrations ranged over three orders of magnitude (from 0.4 to 958 ng/g lipid), with a median value of 85 ng/g lipid. We identified age, sampling year, body mass index, sex, and living near hot spots or being occupationally exposed as relevant factors in determining body burden. Our results can give indications to refine regulatory policies on PCBs in Italy, with particular attention to the disposal of residue PCB-containing products. To improve control measures can further decrease the exposure of citizens to PCBs, limit health implications, and improve citizens' perception about chemical risk management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid trend of industrialization and urbanization can lead to greater exposure of the general population to chromium, cobalt, and nickel. Their total body burden from all routes of recent exposure, as well as interindividual variability in exposure levels, metabolism, and excretion rates, are reflected in the blood metal concentrations. The main goals in this study were as follows: observing the reference levels of chromium, cobalt, and nickel in the blood of the population living in Belgrade, identification of individual and sociodemographic factors that most affect their blood levels, and comprehension of recent exposure to chromium, cobalt, and nickel. Blood was sampled from 984 participants, voluntary blood donors, who agreed to participate in this study. Individual and sociodemographic data were collected using questionnaire adapted for different subpopulations. Blood metal analyses were measured using ICP-MS method (7700×, Agilent, USA). Our study provided reference values of chromium, cobalt, and nickel in blood for adult population (18–65 years) and confirmed that blood cobalt and nickel levels were mostly influenced by age and gender, and age, respectively. Furthermore, weight status affected blood chromium and cobalt levels, while national origin affected blood chromium levels. The present study highlighted the importance of human biomonitoring studies to monitor exposure status and identify subpopulations with increased exposure to chromium, cobalt, and nickel. Despite limited biomonitoring studies suggesting extensive antibiotic exposure in general population, the body burden of antibiotics in young children and their potential health risks remain unclear. To assess the antibiotic exposure levels in young children, 508 preschoolers aged 3–6 years were recruited from eastern China in 2022, and a total of 50 representative antibiotics from 8 categories, including 17 human antibiotics (HAs), 4 antibiotics preferred as HAs (PHAs), 16 veterinary antibiotics (VAs), and 13 antibiotics preferred as VAs (PVAs), were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were calculated to evaluate the health risks, and multivariate logistic regression was applied to examine diet with antibiotic exposure. Our results showed that there were 41 antibiotics detected in children's urine, and the overall detection frequency was as high as 100%. Sulfonamides, macrolides, β-lactams, quinolones, and azoles were the predominant categories of antibiotic detected. Among the studied children, 6.5% had a sum of estimated daily intake (EDI) of all VAs and PVAs larger than 1 μg/kg/day. Notably, 10.0% of the children had a microbiological HI value exceeding 1, primarily contributed by ciprofloxacin. Children with higher consumption of seafood had a relatively increased exposure to multiple categories of antibiotics, including HAs, VAs, quinolones, azoles, and others. Principal component analysis suggested that "Aquatic products and viscera preferred dietary pattern" scores were positively correlated with the exposure levels of ciprofloxacin (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02–1.47) and carbadox (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.10–1.59), and a relatively increased exposure of PHAs was realized in children with higher "Meat-egg preferred dietary pattern" scores (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03–1.50). In conclusion, there was a widespread exposure to antibiotics among preschool children from eastern China, and children who consumed more animal-derived foods may had an increased exposure to antibiotics. Differences in PCDD/Fs concentrations were registered among adult bank voles (Myodes glareolus) inhabiting forest in the vicinity of the Landfill Salariyevo (Moscow, Russia) and caught in early spring (over-winter survivors) and late summer. The levels of highly toxic congeners and WHO-TEQ05 in samples of wintering voles were much lower than those in samples got in summer. This difference was investigated analyzing PCDD/Fs in sexually matured animals and offspring obtained in vivarium. Practically, no significant differences of PCDD/Fs concentrations and general toxicity were revealed among sexes. The main impact to these seasonal differences in PCDD/Fs accumulation was assigned to the types of functional development and activity, diet variation as natural growth of all voles occurs on the same territory but in seasonally diverse conditions. So, the species functional ecology (lifestyle and seasonal features) should be considered in practical application of animal models from natural populations for local monitoring of PCDD/Fs body burden, and individual functional type of ontogenesis among cyclomorphic mammalian species, especially. This study aims to evaluate the body burdens of cadmium (Cd) associated with potential health impairment in residents living near electroplating industries. A total of 269 residents from exposure area and 106 from control area were recruited. We measured the blood and urinary Cd levels using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS); performed physical examinations; determined the urinary levels of β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), Nacetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG); and evaluated the associations between Cd and these biomarkers. Blood and urinary Cd levels in exposure group were statistically higher than in control group (1.712 vs. 1.159 μg/L; 1.980 vs. 1.740 μg/L, respectively, p < 0.05). Urinary β2-MG and 8-OHdG levels in exposure group were also statistically higher (0.448 vs. 0.090 mg/L; 12.759 vs. 12.115 μg/L, respectively, p < 0.05), but urinary NAG levels showed no significant difference between the two groups (13.614 vs. 8.246 IU/L, p > 0.05). The proportion of abnormal nasal symptoms occurring in exposed subjects (88.8%) was much higher than in control subjects (78.2%, p < 0.05). Urinary Cd levels were positively correlated with blood Cd levels, urinary 8-OHdG, and NAG levels (r = 0.307, r = 0.185, r = 0.150, p < 0.05), but not correlated with urinary β2-MG levels (p > 0.05). In conclusion, our study revealed that residents living in close proximity to electroplating industries had elevated body burdens of Cd levels, as well as slight renal dysfunction and DNA oxidation damage. Historical (or legacy) contaminants, such as metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs; e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls) have been measured in circumpolar subpopulations of polar bears, especially from Hudson Bay, East Greenland, and Svalbard, but substantially less is currently known about new and/or emerging contaminants such as polychlorinated naphthalenes, current-use pesticides, organotins, and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is an apex Arctic predator that accumulates high levels of bioaccumulative POPs and mercury (Hg), but there is currently no comprehensive profiling of the present knowledge on contaminants in tissue and body compartments in polar bears. Based on current literature reports and data, and including archived museum samples (as far back as the 1300s) and up to 2018, the aim of this review is to utilize available data to examine the comparative distribution and burden of mainly lipophilic contaminants in kidney, liver, fat, and other body compartments, such as milk, blood, and brain. Highlight outcomes from this review include the following: (1) the kidneys are one of the most important tissue depots of contaminants in polar bears; (2) there is a critical lack of data concerning the presence of metals of concern (other than Hg); and (3) there currently are no data available on the concentrations of many newer and emerging contaminants, such as PACs, which is especially relevant given the increasing oil and gas development in regions, such as the Beaufort Sea (Canada). We investigated the common wasp, Vespula vulgaris as a bioindicator and biomonitor of metals in the industrial area. Using traps, we collected 257 yellowjackets along a pollution gradient in the Harjavalta Cu-Ni smelter in Southwest Finland. Our method detected metal elements such as arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and mercury (Hg) in wasps. The data analyses revealed V. vulgaris can be a proper indicator for As, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb, rather than for Fe and Zn contamination. Body burdens of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb decreased with an increase in distance from smelter. Enrichment factor (EF) followed the pattern Pb ˃ Cd ˃ As ˃ Co ˃ Cu ˃ Ni. The highest bioaccumulation (BAF) values were revealed for Cd (5.9) and the lowest for Pb (0.1). Specially designed software (WaspFacer) allowed revealing body burdens of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, and Pb to be associated with rather smaller than more asymmetric facial colour markings in yellowjackets. These results add to the body of literature on how heavy metal contaminants can have tangible phenotypic effects on insects and open future opportunities for using wasps as indicators of metal pollution. Metals are widely used in modern society harming the environment; their toxicity cause environmental adverse effects to many organisms including zooplankton. This contribution employed: (a) acute and chronic toxicity tests, (b) epifluorescence image analysis, and (c) atomic absorption techniques, to analyze toxicity of four trace (copper, iron, nickel, and zinc), and one non-trace metals (mercury) on the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata. This work integrated results of Bioconcentration Factors (BCF's), sites of entry and accumulation and to determine mechanisms of uptake and toxicity of these five metals of the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata. This integral analysis enhanced our understanding of knowledge on: (a) the toxicity mechanisms, (b) sites of metal entry and concentration inside the rotifer, (c) bioconcentration and body burdens. As expected, Hg the non-trace metal used here, was the most toxic. Our results suggest that the toxicity is ameliorated in the rotifer by selecting feeding avoiding the most toxic particles and reducing adverse effects on reproduction, until mortality per se reduces reproduction. The chronic effect on ingestion rate was quite sensitive for all metals whereas reproduction was slightly affected. The combination of acute and chronic tests and determination of BCF's for each metal allowed calculation of the acute and chronic body burdens.
