The article discusses the challenges for life-cycle assessment (LCA) of biofuels. According to the authors, substitutes for petroleum-based transportation fuels are needed in order to address energy security and climate change concerns. They argue that biofuels, which are dominated by ethanol produced from corn and sugar cane, are emerging as important fossil fuel substitutes and decision-making tools are necessary to support choices among alternatives. Topics include an overview of the LCA methodology, the challenges to applying it to biofuels, such as predicting biofuel production technologies and practices, and the relationship between farmers, feedstock options, and land use.
