The transport of ferrihydrite colloid (FHC) through porous media is influenced by anions (e.g., PO43-) and cations (e.g., Ca2+) in the aqueous environment. This study investigated the cotransport of FHC with P and P/Ca in saturated sand columns. The results showed that P adsorption enhanced FHC transport, whereas Ca loaded onto P-FHC retarded FHC transport. Phosphate adsorption provided a negative potential on the FHC, while Ca added to P-FHC led to electrostatic screening, compression of the electric double layer, and formation of Ca5(PO4)3OH followed by heteroaggregation at pH ≥ 6.0. The monodentate and bidentate P surface complexes coexisted, and Ca mainly formed a ternary complex with bidentate P (≡(FeO)2PO2Ca). The unprotonation bidentate P at the Stern 1-plane had a considerable negative potential at the Van der Waals molecular surface. Extending the potential effect to the outer layer of FHC, the potential at the Stern 2-plane and zeta potential exhibited a corresponding change, resulting in a change in FHC mobility, which was validated by comparison of experimental results, DFT calculations, and CD-MUSIC models. Our results highlighted the influence of P and Ca on FHC transport and elucidated their interaction mechanisms based on quantum chemistry and colloidal chemical interface reactions.

Microbial reduction of soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) to sparingly soluble tetravalent uranium (U(IV)) has been explored as an in situ strategy to immobilize U. Organic ligands might pose a potential hindrance to the success of such remediation efforts. In the current study, a set of structurally diverse organicligands were shown to enhance the dissolution of crystalline uraninite (UO2) for a wide range of ligand concentrations under anoxic conditions at pH 7.0. Comparisons were made to ligandinduced U mobilization from noncrystalline U(IV). For both U phases, aqueous U concentrations remained low in the absence of organic ligands (500 times more U mobilization). This work shows the potential of numerous organic ligands present in the environment to mobilize both recalcitrant and labile U forms under anoxic conditions to hazardous levels and, in doing so, undermine the stability of immobilized U(IV) sources.

Knowledge on organic matter (OM) concentration and composition is of major importance for predicting Zn speciation and bioavailability in soils, especially for low-Zn soils. However, comprehensive knowledge on the effect of soil-like organic amendments such as compost on metal speciation is limited. For the first time, multisurface modeling is applied on compost to study the effect of solid and dissolved OM composition on the speciation of reactive Zn as influenced by conditions applied in frequently used extractions to estimate Zn bioavailability. First, compost OM composition was determined by fractionation in operationally defined humic, fulvic, and hydrophilic acid pools under various extraction conditions, and subsequently, Zn speciation was modeled using the generic non-ideal competitive adsorption-Donnan (NICA-Donnan) model in addition to adsorption to hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) and clay. The results show a strong effect of extraction conditions on OM concentration and composition and related dissolved Zn speciation. Model predictions show that Zn in solution is mainly bound to dissolved humic acids. Analysis of deviations between measured and modeled Zn concentrations reveal specific limitations of the current generic model parameters, particularly with regard to Zn binding to OM at low concentrations and Ca-Zn competition, that is, typical conditions that occur in low-Zn soils.

The performance of a multisurface sorption model approach, composed of well-accepted surface complexation models in combination with published "generic" parameter sets, is evaluated for its possible use in risk assessment. For that purpose, the leaching of a broad range of potential soil contaminants (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ba, Cr, Co, Mo, V, Sn, Sb, S, As, Se) from eight diffusely and industrially contaminated soils is predicted simultaneously without any parameter optimization. The model approach includes aqueous speciation in combination with sorption to organic matter (NICA-Donnan model), Fe/Al(hydr)oxides (Generalized Two-Layer Model), and clay (Donnan model). Independent data generated by pH-static leaching experiments, performed with individual subsamples over a wide pH range (pH 0.4-12), provide a sensitive evaluation of the model performance. Root-mean-squared error values between predicted and measured log concentrations over the entire pH range, RMSE(log), are < 0.5 for Cu, Ni, Cd, Co, S, and Se, and RMSE(log) < 1 for Zn, Ba, Cr, Pb, Sn, Mo, Sn and As. The approach without parameter optimization has led to recommendations for further research with particular emphasis on identification of leaching mechanisms for Pb, Mo, Sb, and V and further expansion of the data sets to reduce the uncertainty of the available generic sorption parameters for Sn, Sb, Ba, Cr, and V.

Data for interactions between arsenate (AsO4(3-) and fulvic acids (FA) or humic acids (HA) at the surface of goethite are presented (pH 3-7, ionic strength 2 mM and 10 mM). Adsorption of FA and HA leads to desorption of arsenate and a correspondingly strong increase of arsenic concentration in solution. Adsorption of both FA and HA is mutually decreased by the competition with arsenate. The competition between FA and arsenate is much stronger than that between HA and arsenate. Using an advanced model, the LCD model (Ligand and Charge Distribution), arsenate adsorption to goethite in the presence of both adsorbed FA and HA can be predicted reasonably well. The stronger effects of FA on arsenate adsorption are caused, according to the model, by its spatial location which is closer to the oxide surface, and as a consequence, the electrostatic interactions between adsorbed FA particles and arsenate ions are much stronger than those for HA particles. The results show that site and electrostatic competition are the major mechanisms explaining the effects of natural organic matter on the arsenic speciation, whereas other possible mechanisms, such as a chemical reduction of arsenate to arsenite and formation of ternary organic arsenic complexes, are of minor significance.

This paper discusses the modeling of anion and cation leaching from complex matrixes such as weathered steel slag. The novelty of the method is its simultaneous application of the theoretical models for solubility, competitive sorption, and surface precipitation phenomena to a complex system. Selective chemical extractions, pH dependent leaching experiments, and geochemical modeling were used to investigate the thermodynamic equilibrium of 12 ions (As, Ca, Cr, Ba, SO4, Mg, Cd, Cu, Mo, Pb, V, and Zn) with aqueous complexes, soluble solids, and sorptive surfaces in the presence of 12 background analytes (Al, Cl, Co, Fe, K, Mn, Na, Ni, Hg, NO3, CO3, and Ba). Modeling results show that surface complexation and surface precipitation reactions limit the aqueous concentrations of Cd, Zn, and Pb in an environment where Ca, Mg, Si, and CO3 dissolve from soluble solids and compete for sorption sites. The leaching of SO4, Cr, As, Si, Ca, and Mg appears to be controlled by corresponding soluble solids.

Aluminum interacts with negatively charged surfaces in plant roots, causing inhibition of growth and nutrient uptake in plants growing on acid soils. Pectins in the root cell wall form the major cation adsorption surface, with Ca2+ as the main adsorbing cation. Adsorption of Al3+ and Ca2+ to isolated cell wall material of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) roots was examined at pH 3.00-4.25 and in the presence of the aluminum chelators citrate and malate. Al3+ displaced Ca2+ from its pectic binding sites in the cell wall to a large extent but apparently also bound to non-Ca binding groups, displacing protons. Aluminum adsorption depended on the pH of the solution, with little Al adsorbing to the cell wall material at very low pH (< 3.50). Under very acid conditions Al3+ replacing Ca2+ at pectic cross-links is therefore not expected to play a role in X toxicity. Equimolar concentrations of citrate decreased Al competition for Ca binding sites almost completely, whereas malate only had an intermediate effect. The competition of (organo) Al3+, Ca2+, and H+ for cell wall binding sites was described adequately using the Gaines-Thomas exchange model. (Less)

In this paper, we characterize the leaching of heavy metals (Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) from eight contaminated soils over a wide range of pH (pH 0.4-12) using an original approach based on batch pH-static leaching experiments in combination with selective chemical extractions and geochemical modeling. The leached concentrations of the heavy metals are generally much lower than the total concentrations and show a strong pH dependency, resulting in "V-shaped" leaching curves with orders of magnitude changes in solution concentrations. The "multisurface" model used incorporates adsorption to dissolved and solid organic matter (NICA-Donnan), iron/aluminum (hydr)oxide (generalized two-layer model) and clay (Donnan model). These models were applied without modifications, and only the standard set of binding constants and parameters was used (i.e., without any fitting). The model predictions of heavy metal leaching are generally adequate and sometimes excellent. Results from speciation calculations are consistent with the well-recognized importance of organic matter as the dominant reactive solid phase in soils. The observed differences between soils with respect to element speciation in the solid phase correspond to the relative amounts of the reactive surfaces present in the soils. In the solution phase, complexes with dissolved organic matter (DOM) are predominant over most of the pH range. Free metal ions (Me2+) are generally the dominant species below pH 4. The combination of the experimental and modeling approach as used in this study is shown to be promising because it leads to a more fundamental understanding of the pH-dependent leaching processes in soils. The "multisurface" modeling approach, with the selected sorption models, is shown to be able to adequately predict the leaching of heavy metals from contaminated soils over a wide range of conditions, without any fitting of parameters.

A total of 171 datasets of literature and experimental data for metal-ion binding by fulvic and humic acids have been digitized and re-analyzed using the NICA-Donnan model. Generic parameter values have been derived that can be used for modeling in the absence of specific metal-ion binding measurements. These values complement the previously derived generic descriptions of proton binding. For ions where the ranges of pH, concentration, and ionic strength conditions are well covered by the available data, the generic parameters successfully describe the metal-ion binding behavior across a very wide range of conditions and for different humic and fulvic acids. Where published data for other metal ions are too sparse to constrain the model well, generic parameters have been estimated by interpolating trends observable in the parameter values of the well-defined data. Recommended generic NICA-Donnan model parameters are provided for 23 metal ions (Al, Am, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cm, Co, CrIII, Cu, Dy, Eu, FeII, FeIII, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, ThIV, UVIO2, VIIIO, and Zn) for both fulvic and humic acids. These parameters probably represent the best NICA-Donnan description of metal-ion binding that can be achieved using existing data
