The capacity and mechanism of adsorption of monobutyltin (MBT) on clay minerals as related to the presence and dynamics of MBT in sediments and particulate matter were investigated. Two phyllosilicates of high permanent charge and expandable structure and two silicates of low permanent charge and nonexpandable structure were used as sorbents. The results suggest an important role for clay minerals in the presence and dynamics of MBT as bound residues in sediments.
