Dwellings are material intensive products. To date, material use in dwellings has been investigated mainly using economic (exogenous) or dwelling (endogenous) drivers, with few studies comprehensively combining both. For the first time, we identify a comprehensive set of such drivers of demand for building materials and analyze them using the logarithmic mean divisia index (LMDI) method. We combine the LMDI method, the concept of dynamic material flow analysis, and physical and monetary flows to decompose the demand for building materials into the following six effects: material intensity, floor area shape, dwelling type, dwelling intensity, economic output, and population. We analyze these six effects on demand for concrete in new dwellings in the U.K. from 1951 to 2014, classified into six dwelling types and four subregions. Of these six effects, the material intensity effect is the most important, overall contributing to increasing concrete demand by +79 Mt from 1950 to 2014, while the dwelling intensity effect plays an opposite role, overall reducing concrete demand from 1950 to 2014 by -56 Mt. The economic output effect is also significant (+38 Mt from 1950 to 2014). A comparative analysis of the six effects in the four U.K. nations reveals that most of the effects arise from England, while the other nations have minor effects due to their smaller populations. Our results show that changes to the demand for concrete in the U.K. fluctuate and have mainly remained between ±30 Mt year-2 from 1950 to 2014, and thus the inflows of concrete into the in-use stock of dwellings have experienced neither entirely increasing or decreasing trends during this period. This study contributes to understanding changes in resource demand due to social, economic, and technological factors and thus improves the capability to reliably and quantitatively model the use of materials in the built environment.

Our understanding of the microorganisms involved in in situ biodegradation of xenobiotics, like pesticides, in natural and engineered environments is poor. On-farm biopurification systems (BPSs) treat farm-produced pesticide-contaminated wastewater to reduce surface water pollution. BPSs are a labor and cost-efficient technology but are still mainly operated as black box systems. We used DNA-stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) and classical enrichment to be informed about the organisms responsible for in situ degradation of the phenylurea herbicide linuron in a BPS matrix. DNA-SIP identified Ramlibacter, Variovorax, and an unknown Comamonadaceae genus as the dominant linuron assimilators. While linuron-degrading Variovorax strains have been isolated repeatedly, Ramlibacter has never been associated before with linuron degradation. Genes and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) previously linked to linuron catabolism were enriched in the heavy DNA-SIP fractions, suggesting their involvement in in situ linuron assimilation. BPS material free cultivation of linuron degraders from the same BPS matrix resulted in a community dominated by Variovorax, while Ramlibacter was not observed. To improve current and future risk assessment of pesticides under global warming, mechanistic insights and consideration of daily temperature fluctuations (DTFs) are needed. One overlooked mechanism how both higher mean temperatures and DTFs may increase toxicity is by reducing body size (temperature-size-rule). We studied whether a higher mean temperature and DTF magnified chlorpyrifos toxicity in Ischnura elegans damselfly larvae, and whether this was mediated by temperature-induced reductions in body size and/or physiological changes. The lethal effects of chlorpyrifos were magnified at the high mean temperature (up to ∼15%) and under DTF (up to ∼33%), and especially at their combination (up to ∼46%) indicating synergisms. This highlights that not only considering DTFs, but also their interaction with higher mean temperatures is pivotal for realistic predictions of pesticide toxicity. Both higher temperatures and DTFs resulted in smaller larvae, which were more sensitive to chlorpyrifos. Notably, the DTF-induced smaller body sizes, as well as the higher oxidative damage to lipids, contributed to the higher chlorpyrifos toxicity under DTF. While the health effects of cigarette smoking are well recognised and documented, the environmental impacts of tobacco are less appreciated and often overlooked. Here we evaluate tobacco's global footprint across its entire supply chain, looking at resources needs, wastes and emissions of the full cradle-to-grave life cycle of cigarettes. The cultivation of 32.4 Mt of green tobacco used for the production of 6.48 Mt of dry tobacco in the six trillion cigarettes manufactured worldwide in 2014, were shown to contribute almost 84 Mt CO2 eq emissions to climate change - approximately 0.2% of the global total, 490,000 tonnes 1,4 dichlorobenzene eq to ecosystem ecotoxicity levels, over 22 billion m3 and 21 Mt oil eq to water and fossil fuel depletion respectively. A typical cigarette was shown to have a water footprint of 3.7 litres, a climate change contribution of 14 g CO2 eq, and a fossil fuel depletion contribution of 3.5 g oil eq. Tobacco competes with essential commodities for resources and places significant pressures on the health of our planet and its most vulnerable inhabitants. Increased awareness as well as better monitoring and assessment of the environmental issues associated with tobacco should support the current efforts to reduce global tobacco use as an important element of sustainable development.

Energy, water, and waste systems analyzed at a nexus level are important to move toward more sustainable cities. In this paper, the "resilience.io" platform is developed and applied to emphasize on waste-to-energy pathways, along with the water and energy sectors, aiming to develop waste treatment capacity and energy recovery with the lowest economic and environmental cost. Three categories of waste including wastewater (WW), municipal solid waste (MSW), and agriculture waste are tested as the feedstock for thermochemical treatment via incineration, gasification, or pyrolysis for combined heat and power generation, or biological treatment such as anaerobic digestion (AD) and aerobic treatment. A case study is presented for Ghana in sub-Saharan Africa, considering a combination of waste treatment technologies and infrastructure, depending on local characteristics for supply and demand. The results indicate that the biogas generated from waste treatment turns out to be a promising renewable energy source in the analyzed region, while more distributed energy resources can be integrated. A series of scenarios including the business-as-usual, base case, naturally constrained, policy interventions, and environmental and climate change impacts demonstrate how simulation with optimization models can provide new insights in the design of sustainable value chains, with particular emphasis on whole-system analysis and integration.

Acid and metalliferous release occurring when sulfide (principally pyrite)-containing rock from mining activities and from natural environments is exposed to the elements is acknowledged as a major environmental problem. Acid rock drainage (ARI)) management is both challenging and costly for operating and legacy mine sites. Current technological solutions are expensive and focused on treating ARD on release rather than preventing it at source. We describe here a viable, practical mechanism for reduced ARD through the formation of silicate-stabilized iron oxyhydroxide surface layers. Without silicate, oxidized pyrite particles form an overlayer of crystalline goethite or lepidocrocite with porous structure. With silicate addition, a smooth, continuous, coherent and apparently amorphous iron oxyhydroxide surface layer is observed, with consequent pyrite dissolution rates reduced by more than 90% at neutral pH. Silicate is structurally incorporated within this layer and inhibits the phase transformation from amorphous iron (oxy)hydroxide to goethite, resulting in pyrite surface passivation. This is confirmed by computational simulation, suggesting that silicate-doping of a pseudo amorphous iron oxyhydroxide (ferrihydrite structure) is thermodynamically more stable than the equivalent undoped structure. This mechanism and its controlling factors are described. As a consequence of the greatly reduced acid generation rate, neutralization from on-site available reactive silicate minerals may be used to maintain neutral pH, after initial limestone addition to achieve neutral pH, thus maintaining the integrity of these layers for effective ARD management. Biomagnetic monitoring of atmospheric pollution is a growing application in the field of environmental magnetism. Particulate matter (PM) in atmospheric pollution contains readily measurable concentrations of magnetic minerals. Biological surfaces, exposed to atmospheric pollution, accumulate magnetic particles over time, providing a record of location-specific, time integrated air quality information. This review summarizes current knowledge of biological material ("sensors") used for biomagnetic monitoring purposes. Our work addresses the following: the range of magnetic properties reported for lichens, mosses, leaves, bark, trunk wood, insects, crustaceans, mammal and human tissues; their associations with atmospheric pollutant species (PM, NO, trace elements, PAHs); the pros and cons of biomagnetic monitoring of atmospheric pollution; current challenges for large-scale implementation of biomagnetic monitoring; and future perspectives. A summary table is presented, with the aim of aiding researchers and policy makers in selecting the most suitable biological sensor for their intended biomagnetic monitoring purpose.

While the importance of nanoparticle (NP) characterization under relevant test conditions is widely recognized in nanotoxicology, few studies monitor NPs behavior in the presence of exposed organisms. Here we studied the behavior of nine types of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during the 48 h algal toxicity test. In particular, we investigated NP aggregation and dissolution by time-resolved inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and ultrafiltration and performed mass balance measurements to study the distribution of Ag in the test system. We also determined the amount of extra-and intracellular Ag by chemically etching AgNPs on the surface of algal cells and used dark field microscopy for their imaging. We observed that positively charged branched polyethilenimine (bPEI)-coated AgNPs tend to aggregate in the presence of algae and interact with test vessels and algal cells, while citrate -coated AgNPs have a tendency to dissolve. On the other hand, with large variation of half-maximum effective concentration (EC50) across tested NPs (5.4 to 300 ngAg mL(-1)), Ag internalized by the algal cells at EC50 was similar (0.8 to 3.6 ngAg mL(-1)) for all AgNP types. These data show that while sorption to the vessels, dissolution, and aggregation impact on the distribution of AgNPs in the test system and on interactions with algal cells, AgNP toxicity is strongly correlated with the NP-cell surface interaction and internalization of Ag. Recent studies have investigated lead (Pb) concentrations in lip products but little is known about its oral bioavailability. In this study, 75 lipsticks and 18 lip glosses were assessed for Pb concentration, while 15 samples were assessed for Pb relative bioavailability (RBA, relative to Pb acetate absorption) using a mouse femur assay. Lead concentrations were 0.2-10 185 mg kg(-1), with 21 samples exceeding the Chinese limit of 40 mg kg(-1). Samples with orange and pink colors and/or low cost contained higher Pb concentrations. For samples with Pb > 7500 mg kg(-1), Pb was present due to the addition of lead chromate (PbCrO4) as a colorant, which was confirmed by X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis. Lead RBA in 15 samples (87-10 185 mg kg(-1)) ranged from 23% to 95%, being significantly higher in moderate Pb (56-95%; 87-300 mg kg(-1)) than high Pb samples (23-48%; >300 mg kg(-1)). The calculation of Pb intake based on Pb-RBA showed that lip product ingestion contributed 5.4-68% of the aggregate Pb exposure for women depending on Pb concentration. The high Pb concentration in some lip products together with their moderate Pb-RBA suggests that lip product ingestion is a potential health concern to women. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

The scientific understanding of nanoparticle (NP) release and transformations they undergo during the product life cycle is hampered by the narrow scope of many research endeavors in terms of both breadth of variables and completeness of analytical characterization. We conducted a comprehensive suite of studies to reveal overarching mechanisms and parameters for nanosilver transformations either still adhered to the fabric or when released after washing. Laboratory prepared nanoenhanced fabrics were investigated: three Ag variants and one Au used as an unreactive reference to separate mechanical from chemical releases. Sequential combinations of sunlight irradiation and/or washing in seven different detergent formulations was followed by NP characterization divided into two groups: (1) dissolved and particulate matter in the wash solutions and (2) the fraction that remained on the fabric. Analytical techniques included spICP-MS, XANES, TEM, SEM, and total metals analysis of fabric digests and wash water filtrates. Sunlight irradiation stabilizes metallic Ag upon washing. Detergents containing oxidizing agents assisted with Ag particle release but not Au NPs, inferring additional chemical mechanisms. While particle size played some role, the NP capping agent/fabric binder combination was a key factor in release. When particles were released, little alteration in size was observed. The use of well-controlled fabrics, unreactive reference materials, and a life-cycle based experimental regime are paramount to understanding changes in Ag speciation and release upon use of nanoenhanced textiles. Early deployment of carbon dioxide storage is likely to focus on injection into mature oil reservoirs, most of which occur in carbonate rock units. Observations and modeling have shown how capillary trapping leads to the immobilization of CO2 in saline aquifers, enhancing the security and capacity of storage. There are, however, no observations of trapping in rocks with a mixed-wet-state characteristic of hydrocarbon-bearing carbonate reservoirs. Here, we found that residual trapping of supercritical CO2 in a limestone altered to a mixed-wet state with oil was significantly less than trapping in the unaltered rock. In unaltered samples, the trapping of CO2 and N2 were indistinguishable, with a maximum residual saturation of 24%. After the alteration of the wetting state, the trapping of N2 was reduced, with a maximum residual saturation of 19%. The trapping of CO2 was reduced even further, with a maximum residual saturation of 15%. Best-fit Land-model constants shifted from C = 1.73 in the water-wet rock to C = 2.82 for N2 and C = 4.11 for the CO2 in the mixed-wet rock. The results indicate that plume migration will be less constrained by capillary trapping for CO2 storage projects using oil fields compared with those for saline aquifers.

MX (3-Chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone) is a drinking water disinfection byproduct (DBP). It is a potent mutagen and is of concern to public health. Data on MX levels in drinking water, especially in the UK, are limited. Our aim was to investigate factors associated with variability of MX concentrations at the tap, and to evaluate if routinely measured trihalomethanes (THMs) are an appropriate proxy measure for MX. We conducted quarterly water sampling at consumers' taps in eight water supply zones in and around Bradford, UK, between 2007 and 2010. We collected 79 samples which were analyzed for MX using GC-HRMS. Other parameters such as pH, temperature, UV-absorbance and free chlorine were measured concurrently, and total THMs were modeled from regulatory monitoring data. To our knowledge this is the longest MX measurement survey undertaken to date. Concentrations of MX varied between 8.9 and 45.5 ng/L with a median of 21.3 ng/L. MX demonstrated clear seasonality with concentrations peaking in late summer/early fall. Multivariate regression showed that MX levels were associated with total trihalomethanes, UV-absorbance and pH. However, the relationship between TTHM and MX may not be sufficiently consistent across time and location for TTHM to be used as a proxy measure for MX in exposure assessment.

Aluminum is acutely toxic, and elevated concentrations of dissolved Al can have detrimental effects on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Robust analytical methods that can determine environmentally relevant Al fractions accurately and efficiently are required by the environmental monitoring community. A simple, robust passive sampling method, the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique, was evaluated for the measurement of dissolved Al species in freshwater and marine water using either Chelex-100 or Metsorb (a titanium dioxide-based binding agent) as the adsorbent. Mass vs time DGT deployments at pH 5.05 (Al(3+) and Al(OH)(2+) dominate) and 8.35 (Al(OH)(4)(-) dominates) demonstrated linear uptake of Al (R(2) = 0.989 and 0.988, respectively) for Metsorb. Similar deployments of Chelex-DGT showed linear uptake at pH 5.05 (R(2) = 0.994); however, at pH 8.35 the mass of Al accumulated was 40-70% lower than predicted, suggesting that Chelex-100 is not suitable for Al measurements at high pH. The Metsorb-DGT measurement was independent of pH (5.0-8.5) and ionic strength (0.001-0.7 mol L(-1) NaNO(3)), whereas the Chelex-DGT measurement was only independent of ionic strength at pH 5.0. At pH 8.4, increasing ionic strength led to considerable underestimation (up to 67%) of Al concentration. Deployments of Metsorb-DGT (up to 4 days) in synthetic freshwater (pH range 5.4-8.1) and synthetic seawater (pH 8.15) resulted in linear mass uptakes, and the concentration measured by DGT agreed well with solution concentrations. Conversely, deployment of Chelex-DGT in synthetic seawater and freshwater (pH ≥7.7 Al(OH)(4)(-) dominant species) resulted in a decrease in accumulated mass with increasing deployment time. In situ field evaluations in fresh, estuarine, and marine waters confirmed that Metsorb-DGT was more accurate than Chelex-DGT for the measurement of dissolved Al in typical environmental waters.

Land-use regression modeling was used to develop maps of annual average black smoke (BS) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) concentrations in 1962, 1971, 1981, and 1991 for Great Britain on a 1 km grid for use in epidemiological studies. Models were developed in a GIS using data on land cover, the road network, and population, summarized within circular buffers around air pollution monitoring sites, together with altitude and coordinates of monitoring sites to consider global trend surfaces. Models were developed against the log-normal (LN) concentration, yielding R(2) values of 0.68 (n = 534), 0.68 (n = 767), 0.41 (n = 771), and 0.39 (n = 155) for BS and 0.61 (n = 482), 0.65 (n = 733), 0.38 (n = 756), and 0.24 (n = 153) for SO(2) in 1962, 1971, 1981, and 1991, respectively. Model evaluation was undertaken using concentrations at an independent set of monitoring sites. For BS, values of R(2) were 0.56 (n = 133), 0.41 (n = 191), 0.38 (n = 193), and 0.34 (n = 37), and for SO(2) values of R(2) were 0.71 (n = 121), 0.57 (n = 183), 0.26 (n = 189), and 0.31 (n = 38) for 1962, 1971, 1981, and 1991, respectively. Models slightly underpredicted (fractional bias: 0∼-0.1) monitored concentrations of both pollutants for all years. This is the first study to produce historic concentration maps at a national level going back to the 1960s.

A new diffusive gradients in a thin film (DGT) technique for measuring dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in fresh and marine waters is reported. The new method, which uses a commercially available titanium dioxide based adsorbent (Metsorb), was evaluated and compared to the well-established ferrihydrite-DGT method (ferrihydrite cast within the polyacrylamide gel). DGT time-series experiments showed that the mass of DRP accumulated by Metsorb and ferrihydrite was linear with time when deployed in simple solutions. Both DGT methods showed predictable uptake across the pH (4.0-8.3) and ionic strength (0.0001-1 mol L(-1) NaNO(3)) ranges investigated, and the total capacity of the Metsorb binding phase (similar to 40 000 ng P) was 2.5-5 times higher than the reported total capacity of the ferrihydrite binding phase. The measurement of DRP in synthetic freshwater and synthetic seawater by Metsorb-DGT over a 4 day deployment period showed excellent agreement with the concentration of DRP measured directly in solution, whereas the ferrihydrite-DGT method significantly underestimated (23-30%) the DRP concentration in synthetic seawater for deployment times of two days or more. Field deployments of Metsorb-DGT samplers with various diffusive layer thicknesses allowed accurate measurement of both the diffusive boundary layer thickness and DRP concentration in situ. The Metsorb-DGT method performs similarly to ferrihydrite-DGT for freshwater measurements but is shown to be more accurate than the ferrihydrite method for determining DRP in seawater. Radiocarbon (14C) measurements offer a unique investigative tool to study methane emissions by identifying fossil-fuel methane in air. Fossil-fuel methane is devoid of 14C and, when emitted to the atmosphere, causes a strong decrease in the ratio of radiocarbon to total carbon in methane (Δ14CH4). By observing the changes in Δ14CH4, the fossil fraction of methane emissions can be quantified. Presently, there are very few published Δ14CH4 measurements, mainly because it is challenging to collect and process the large volumes of air needed for radiocarbon measurements. We present a new sampling system that collects enough methane carbon for high precision Δ14CH4 measurements without having to transport large volumes of air. The system catalytically combusts CH4 into CO2 and adsorbs the combustion-derived CO2 onto a molecular sieve trap, after first removing CO2, CO, and H2O. Tests using reference air show a Δ14CH4 measurement repeatability of 5.4‰, similar or better than the precision in the most recent reported measurements. We use the system to produce the first Δ14CH4 measurements in central London and show that day-to-day differences in Δ14CH4 in these samples can be attributed to fossil methane input. The new system could be deployed in a range of settings to investigate CH4 sources., This study presents the development and testing of a unique sampling system for atmospheric methane at ambient concentrations (∼2 ppm) for high precision radiocarbon (14C) measurements that can identify fossil methane sources, which are entirely depleted in 14C.
