Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have garnered significant global attention from researchers due to their unique physicochemical properties and wide-ranging applications in industry and medicine. However, their release into aquatic ecosystems has raised concerns regarding potential ecotoxicological consequences. The present study investigated the effects of polyvinyl pyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles on Labeo rohita fingerlings, focusing on behavioural reactions, genotoxic effects, histological changes and bioaccumulation. L. rohita fingerlings were exposed to polyvinyl pyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 18 to 29 nm for 7 days at concentrations of 100, 200, 400 and 800 ug/l. The nanoparticle zeta potential was found to be extremely negative, measuring - 55.5 mV for 18 nm and - 31.4 mV for 29 nm. Behavioural abnormalities, including respiratory distress, reduced responsiveness and erratic swimming, were observed in exposed groups compared to controls, with severity increasing with higher nanoparticle concentrations. Genotoxicity assessment revealed significantly higher DNA damage in kidney cells compared to gill cells. Histological examination of gill tissues showed clogging in primary and secondary lamellae, along with distorted anatomy, necrosis and vacuolar atrophy in peripheral tubules of the kidneys. The kidneys exhibited greater nanoparticle accumulation than the gills with prolonged exposure. Moreover, 18 nm AgNPs induced more pronounced DNA damage and histological alterations in the kidney and gill tissues compared to 29 nm nanoparticles. This study elucidates the critical role of monitoring AgNPs in aquatic systems, providing essential data on their behaviour and environmental impacts. The findings highlight the need for improved detection techniques and effective management of AgNP contamination. Land surface temperature (LST) is defined as a phenomenon which shows that microclimate of an urban system gets heated much faster than its surrounding rural climates. The expansion of buildings has a noteworthy influence on land use/land cover (LULC) due to conversion of vegetation land into commercial and residential areas and their associated infrastructure by which LST is accelerated. The objective of the research was to study the impact of changes in LULC on LST of Southern Punjab (Pakistan) through remote sensing (RS) data. Landsat images of 30-year duration (1987, 1997, 2007 and 2017) were employed for identifying vegetation indices and LST in the study region. These images also helped to work out normalized difference water index (NDWI) and normalized difference built-up index (NDBI) maps. There was an increase from 29620 (3.63 %) to 88038 ha (10.8 %) in built-up area over the 30 years. LST values were found in the range 12-42 °C, 11-44 °C, 11-45 °C and 11-47 °C in the years 1987, 1997, 2007 and 2017, respectively. Regression coefficients (R 2 ) 0.81, 0.78, 0.84 and 0.76 were observed between NDVI and LST in the corresponding years respectively. Our study showed that NDVI and NDWI were negatively correlated with less LST; however, NDBI showed positive correlation with high LST. The novel photocatalyst of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAEDTC@MIL-101(Fe) was prepared based on the sol-gel method, and its structure and morphology were determined by SEM mapping, TEM, XRD, FTIR, and N 2 adsorption-desorption analyses. The photocatalytic activity of nanocomposite was evaluated in comparison with other particles as well as adsorption and photolysis processes. The effect of operating parameters showed that the complete degradation of penicillin G (PNG) can be provided at a photocatalyst dosage of 0.6 g/L, radiation intensity of 36 W, pH of 5, and time of 60 min. In the optimum condition, 84% TOC removal was attained and the BOD 5 /COD rate for the treated effluent was above 0.4, which was representative of the high biodegradability of the treated effluent compared to the raw sample. The findings of energy consumption showed that PNG can be easily and effectively treated by the photocatalytic process based on magnetic MIL-101(Fe) with electrical energy per order between 10 and 20.87 kWh/m 3 . Due to the excellent interaction between the MIL-101(Fe) and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /PAEDTC, the photocatalyst stability test showed a recyclability of the particles for 5 consecutive reaction cycles with a minimum reduction of 7%. Solution treated with photocatalyst under UV and visible light sources explained that the toxicity of the effluent after treatment is significantly reduced with the growth of Escherichia coli. Scavenging experiments showed that • OH radical and hole (h + ) are the main agents in degrading PNG to CO 2 , H 2 O, and biodegradable and low-toxicity products. Finally, the findings of the diagnostic analysis and comparative experiments proved that with the interaction of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 , NH 2 , and MIL-101(Fe), a lower band gap can be prepared for more absorption of photons and pollutant and also more and faster production of active radicals., (© 2023. The study is aimed at investigating the impact of waste management in the context of Industry 4.0 and sustainable development. Data were collected from 257 production managers in the industrial sector using a survey questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS and PLS-SEM. The findings indicated that Industry 4.0 and waste management significantly contribute to achieving sustainable development. The integration of Industry 4.0 technologies and effective waste management practices can help organizations implement sustainable development goals. Practical implications include assisting organizations in implementing Industry 4.0 technologies and waste management strategies based on the 3Rs principle. This can lead to reduced environmental impacts and improved resource efficiency, contributing to sustainable development. Policymakers can also benefit from the study's insights to address waste management challenges and promote sustainable development. The study's originality lies in its incorporation of the cyber-physical system and niche theory to explore how Industry 4.0 can facilitate sustainable waste management. It highlights the transformative potential of Industry 4.0 in the industrial sector, particularly in developing countries. The surface of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles was subject to modification through the incorporation of L-proline (LP) by simple co-precipitation method in which silver nanoparticles were deposited by in situ method, thereby yielding the Fe 3 O 4 @LP-Ag nanocatalyst. The fabricated nanocatalyst was characterized using an array of techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results evince that the immobilization of LP on the Fe 3 O 4 magnetic support facilitated the dispersion and stabilization of Ag NPs. The SPION@LP-Ag nanophotocatalyst exhibited exceptional catalytic efficiency facilitating the reduction of MO, MB, p-NP, p-NA, NB, and CR in the presence of NaBH 4 . The rate constants obtained from the pseudo-first-order equation were 0.78, 0.41, 0.34, 0.27, 0.45, 0.44, and 0.34 min -1 for CR, p-NP, NB, MB, MO, and p-NA, respectively. Additionally, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model was deemed the most probable mechanism for catalytic reduction. The novelty of this study lies in the use of L-proline immobilized on Fe 3 O 4 MNPs as a stabilizing agent for the in-situ deposition of silver nanoparticles, resulting in the synthesis of Fe 3 O 4 @LP-Ag nanocatalyst. This nanocatalyst exhibits high catalytic efficacy for the reduction of multiple organic pollutants and azo dyes, which can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the magnetic support and the catalytic activity of the silver nanoparticles. The goal of the current study was to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using ZnCl 2 .2H 2 O salt precursor and an aqueous extract of Nephrolepis exaltata (N. exaltata), which act as a capping and reducing agent. N. exaltata plant extract-mediated ZnO-NPs were further characterized by various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-visible (UV-Vis), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The nanoscale crystalline phase of ZnO-NPs was analyzed by the XRD patterns. The FT-IR analysis revealed different functional groups of biomolecules involved in the reduction and stabilization of the ZnO-NPs. The light absorption and optical properties of ZnO-NPs were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy at a wavelength of 380 nm. The spherical shape morphology of ZnO-NPs with mean particle size ranges between 60 and 80 nm was confirmed by SEM images. While the EDX analysis was used to identify the elemental composition of ZnO-NPs. Furthermore, the synthesized ZnO-NPs demonstrate potential antiplatelet activity by inhibiting the platelet aggregation induced by platelet activation factor (PAF) and arachidonic acid (AA). The results showed that synthesized ZnO-NPs were more effective in inhibiting platelet aggregation induced by AA with IC 50 (56% and 10 μg/mL) and PAF (63% and 10 μg/mL), respectively. However, the biocompatibility of ZnO-NPs was assessed in human lung cancer cell line (A549) under in vitro conditions. The cytotoxicity of synthesized nanoparticles revealed that cell viability decreased and the IC 50 was found to be 46.7% at a concentration of 75 μg/mL. The present work concluded the green synthesis of ZnO-NPs that was achieved by N. exaltata plant extract and showed good antiplatelet and cytotoxic activity, which demonstrates the lack of harmful effects making them more effective for use in pharmaceutical and medical fields to treat thrombotic disorders., (© 2023. The environmental goods and services industry consists of the activities that generate products and services to monitor, avoid, restrict, reduce, or repair environmental risk and decrease non-renewable energy resource usage. Although the environmental goods industry does not exist in many countries, mainly developing countries, through international trade, its impacts are reaching developing countries. This study examines the impact of environmental and non-environmental goods trade on emissions in high and middle-income countries. For empirical estimation, the panel ARDL model is applied using the data from 2007 to 2020. The results indicate that importing environmental goods decreases emissions while imports of non-environmental goods increase the emissions in high-income countries in the long run. It is found that imports of environmental goods in developing countries decrease emissions in both the short and long run. However, in the short run, the imports of non-environmental goods in developing countries have an insignificant impact on emissions., (© 2023. The generation of wastewater has increased rapidly with the expansion of industries, hence, posing a risk to human health and the environment. The development of novel materials and technologies for textile wastewater treatment is constantly evolving. In this work, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue employing ZSM-5 zeolite-doped polyaniline composites is presented. To fabricate ZSM-5-based polyaniline (PANI) composites, the simple approach of in situ oxidative polymerization has been adopted. Different weight ratios of ZSM-5 have been used for the synthesis, and samples have been labelled as PAZe-1, PAZe-5, and PAZe-10. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the prepared composites, including field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermo-gravimetry analysis (TGA). The photocatalytic performance of polyaniline, ZSM-5, and their composites was assessed by monitoring the degradation of methylene blue in the presence of visible light. Degradation results of the polyaniline-doped composites were found to be better than that of the polyaniline alone. When the photocatalytic efficiencies of different composites were compared, the PAZe-1 showed the best performance, with 99.9% degradation efficiency after 210 min of irradiation, while PANI, PAZe-5, PAZe-10, and ZSM-5 show 38%, 82%, 71%, and 99% removal efficiency. Apart from methylene blue, the composite PAZe-1 was further explored for the degradation of other organic pollutants such as methyl orange, chlorpyrifos, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid, and p-nitroaniline. The main aim of the present study was to assess the removal of cadmium (Cd) from contaminated soil by using Pelargonium × hortorum - an ornamental plant. Furthermore, the genotoxic impacts of Cd on plant was evaluated, and accumulated Cd in shoots were recovered as Cd-nanoparticles. For this purpose, a pot experiment was carried out with Cd (0-150 mg/kg) spiked soil. P. hortorum was grown for 24 weeks in a greenhouse. Subsequently, harvested root/shoot biomass and Cd concentration in root/shoot were determined. The micronucleus assay was performed to assess the genotoxicity of Cd within the selected plant. Accumulated Cd in shoots was recovered as Cd-nanoparticles and was characterized by SEM and XRD. Exposure to Cd exhibited a phytotoxic impact by reducing the plant biomass, but plant survived at higher Cd concentrations and the tolerance index was greater than 60% at a higher Cd level (150 mg/kg). Moreover, 257 mg/kg of Cd in aerial parts was observed, and maximum Cd uptake (120 mg plant -1 ) by P. hortorum was found at 150 mg/kg Cd. Plants exposed to Cd exhibited genotoxic impact by increasing the number of micronuclei by 59% at a higher Cd level (150 mg/kg) and the mitotic index was reduced by 20%. Noise exposure has reached an alarming degree over the years because of rapid growth in the industry, transportation, and urbanization. Therefore, it is a dire need to provide awareness of the sources and mitigation strategies of noise, and to highlight the health, and socio-economic impacts of noise. A few research studies have documented this emerging issue; however, there is no comprehensive document describing all types of noise, their impacts on living organisms, and control strategies. This review article summarizes the sources of noise; their effects on industrial workers, citizens, and animals; and the value of property in noisy areas. The plethora of literature is showing an increased level of noise in various cities of the world, which have various health consequences such as high blood pressure, insomnia, nausea, heart attack, exhaustion, dizziness, headache, and triggered hearing loss. Apart from humans, noise also affects animal habitat, preying, and reproduction ability; increases heart rate and hearing loss to even death and loss in property value; and impairs the hospital environment. Finally, we have discussed the possible strategies to mitigate the noise problem, policy statements, and regulations to be followed, with future research directions based on the identified research gaps., (© 2022. The role of ionic excretions and hyper-accumulation of salts through alterations of structural and functional traits in five populations of Suaeda vera Forssk. ex J.F. Gmel., a halophytic salt-indicator species of saline environments, was explored. Differently adapted populations of S. vera exhibited specific structural and functional responses for the survival in hyper-saline conditions. Better growth in population from moderately saline habitat (25-30 dS m -1 ) was linked to high shoot and root K + and increased ion selectivity (K + /Na + and Ca 2+ /Na + ). Increased excretion of Na + and Cl - with increasing salinity level was a critical mechanism in maintaining ionic balance. Drastic differences were observed for anatomical characteristics in populations inhabiting differentially salt-affected lands. The plants from highly saline sites were characterized by narrow metaxylem vessels, low proportion of cortical parenchyma, and reduced phloem area leading to stunted growth. Contrariwise, root area significantly increased due to high proportion of sclerified xylem tissue, which was associated with easier conduction of solutes and protection of roots from collapsing. Root sclerification particularly at the highest salinity regime was a key factor in the survival of this species in salt-affected compact soils. Leaf anatomical characteristics showed reduction with increasing salinity, but the leaf thickness responded otherwise. This contributed to increased leaf succulence because of high proportion of storage parenchyma in populations colonizing hyper-saline habitats. It was concluded that moderate salinity conditions were more suitable for the growth of S. vera, though some populations of this species were able to tolerate much higher salinity levels., (© 2022. One of the major environmental problems is the fast accumulation of brick kiln emissions near the peripheries of almost all urban centers. An enormous quantity of substandard coal, wood, rubber tires, or saw wood is used as fuel in these brick kilns, creating environmental pollution through carbon and heavy metals present in the emissions. The present study was designed to determine the distribution pattern of heavy metals in a soil-water-plant system under the influence of brick kiln emissions. Ash, soil (0-15 cm), water, and plant samples were collected from the adjacent areas of the brick kilns. Geo-accumulation index and contamination factors were used to assess the toxicity of metals to soil and plants. It was found that the concentrations of Cd in water, soil, coal, and plant samples were found in the range of 0.004-0.024 mg L -1 , 0.02-0.66, 0.002-0.042, and 0.06 to 0.07 mg kg -1 , respectively, while Pb concentration was found within the range of 0-0.08 mg L -1 , 0.30-8.60, 0.011-0, and 0.01-0.08 mg kg -1 in water, soil, and plant samples, respectively. The concentration of Cd in brick kilns ash was in the range of 0-0.04 mg kg -1 while Pb was found within the range of 0.01-0.05 mg kg -1 for ash. Geo-accumulation index and contamination factor values for Cd were found higher suggesting proper pollution prevention measures to be implemented. Site suitability with regards to environmental protection, public concerns, and the legitimate prerequisite is a basic issue that has been tended to in this study. By and large, marble waste is being unloaded on accessible open spaces or released in water to the close by waterways in the territory, Mohmand marble zone (Shabqadar), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Suitability assessment for marble waste collection and disposal was carried out through the integrated approach of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and geographic information system (GIS) to limit the ecological dangers, public, and government concerns related to marble waste. The available land use was ordered into three main land use classes followed by six sub-classes including water bodies and agriculture (environmental), settlement and social site (social), and marble units and roads (economic). These sub-classes in the investigation region were organized through pairwise correlation and weighted sum analysis, AHP procedure. The AHP results were interpreted through GIS tools of digitization, buffering, and overlay in ArcMap, ArcGIS. The integrated AHP and GIS outcomes were consolidated to get the optimum results of the study, marble waste collection, and disposal options. It was concluded that priority should be given to water bodies followed by agricultural land while protecting the available land use classes from marble waste hazards. The percent priority values calculated are 32.33%, 30.50%, 12.16%, 10.66%, 8.50%, and 6% for water bodies, agricultural land, settlements, marble processing units, roads, and cultural sites respectively. The sequence of priority of the land use values are waterbodies > agriculture > settlement > marble industries > road > cultural site. The present study investigates the causality between energy consumption, natural resources, and carbon emissions volatility. For empirical results, the study analyzed panel data of a Group of Twenty (G-20) countries from 1995 to 2018. The results of Pooled Mean Group (PMG) showed that the consumption of conventional energy sources increases the carbon emissions in the region under consideration. The results also showed that economic growth and carbon emissions are associated with each other according to the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis. The findings showed that rent on mineral resources, oil resources, and forest rent have a positive and significant impact on carbon emissions in G-20 countries. The findings of this study show the complex nature of the relationship between natural resources consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The study suggests a three-dimensional policy framework for the group of twenty countries of economic cooperation to address the environmental issues with a special focus on natural resources preservation and green economic growth., (© 2021. Irrigation water scheduling is crucial to make the most efficient use of ever-decreasing water. As excessive irrigation decreases yield, while imprecise application also causes various environmental issues. Therefore, efficient management of irrigation frequency and irrigation level is necessary to sustain productivity under limited water conditions. The objective of the current study is to assess the water productivity at various irrigation regimes during peanut crop growing seasons (2014 and 2015) in Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey. The field experiments were conducted with treatments consisting of three irrigation frequencies (IF) (IF 1 : 25 mm; IF 2 : 50 mm; and IF 3 : 75 mm of cumulative pan evaporation (CPE)), and four irrigation water levels (WL 1  = 0.50, WL 2  = 0.75, WL 3  = 1.0, and WL 4  = 1.25). WL 1 , WL 2 , WL 3 , and WL 4 treatments received 50, 75, 100, and 125 of cumulative pan evaporation. The CSM-CROPGRO-Peanut model was calibrated with experimental data in 2014 and evaluated with second-year experimental data (2015). The model simulated seed yield and final biomass (dry matter) reasonably well with low normalized root mean square error (RMSE n ) in various irrigation intervals. The model simulated reasonably well for days to anthesis (RMSE = 2.53, d-stat = 0.96, and r 2  = 0.90), days to physiological maturity (RMSE = 2.55), seed yield (RMSE = 1504), and tops biomass dry weight at maturity (RMSE = 3716). Simulation results indicated good agreement between measured and simulated soil water content (SWC) with low RMSE n values (4.0 to 16.8% in 2014 and 4.3 to 18.2% in 2015). Further results showed that IF 2 I 125 irrigation regime produced the highest seed yield. Generally, model evaluation performed reasonably well for all studied parameters with both years' experimental data. This study investigated the phytoremediation potential of maize (Zea mays L.) in Cd-contaminated soil through co-inoculation of metal-tolerant plant beneficial rhizobacteria (MtPBR: Pantoea sp. strain WP-5) with organic manures (PM, poultry manure, and BGR, biogas residues). The objectives of this study were to (i) examine comparative efficiency of MtPBR, PM and BGR alone or in combined form to improve maize biomass and physiology and (ii) understand the role of organic acid production in root exudates of maize for Cd accumulation and translocation. Pantoea sp. WP-5 showed organic acid production and tolerance to high Cd concentration (1000 mg L -1 ), thereby inoculated to maize seeds sown in soil spiked with 75 mg Cd kg -1 soil and 500 g each of the organic manures per pot. The co-inoculation of MtPBR + BGR significantly (P<0.05) increased chlorophyll contents, root/shoot dry weight, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and relative water contents and decreased electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde contents, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase activity in maize over the control treatment. The co-inoculation of MtPBR + BGR produced significantly (P<0.05) higher concentrations of acetic and citric acid (52.7±0.5 and 22.8±0.08 μg g -1 root fwt, respectively) in root exudates of maize, which immobilized Cd within plant roots inferred by the positive relation (root Cd vs. organic acids; R 2 = 0.80-0.92) and reduced Cd translocation to shoots inferred by the negative relation (shoot Cd vs. organic acids; R 2 = 0.81-0.90). Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in fish poses severe threats to the food safety and human health. This study was conducted to assess Hg bioaccumulation in fish (n = 24) and scalp hair (n = 77) of the fishing communities at up- and downstream of the river Swat, Pakistan. The mean Hg concentration in upstream fish Salmo trutta fario (Brown trout) and Schizothorax plagiostomus (Swati fish) species was 34.7±18 μg kg -1 and 29.4±15 μg kg -1 , respectively. The mean Hg concentration in downstream Swati fish, Crossocheilus diplochilus (Spena deqa), and Garra gotyla (Tora deqa) was 65±21 μg kg -1 , 123±33 μg kg -1 , and 326±53 μg Kg -1 , respectively. The mean Hg concentration in scalp hair of the up- and downstream fishing communities was 658±125 μg kg -1 and 3969±791 μg kg -1 , respectively. Independent T-test showed significant difference (p < 0.001) in the mean Hg concentration in scalp hair of the up- and downstream communities. The most prevalent health problems found in the fishing community were muscle pain, headache, visual impairment, arterial blood pressure, anemia, and kidney dysfunction. Multiple linear regression indicated that daily and weekly consumption of the fish significantly increase Hg accumulation in human scalp hair. Regular consumption of fruits and cruciferous and leafy vegetables were found to reduce Hg toxicity in the population. Energy consumption is widely regarded as the primary driver of economic development and environmental degradation. The current study examines how energy use is related to technological innovation, human resources, energy pricing, economic development, and trade openness. For this context, the data set of OECD economies' indicators as mentioned above has been compiled for the period 1991-2019. Three estimators were used in this study from the family of autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL): the mean group (MG), the dynamic fixed effect (DFE), and the pooled mean group (PMG). According to empirical research, technical advances, human resources, and energy pricing all have a negative impact on OECD countries' long-run energy consumption. In the short term, however, these variables have a negligible or inverse effect on energy consumption. On the other hand, economic growth and trade openness in OECD economies all contribute positively to energy demand in the short and long run. A sizeable amount of scholarly work has been done on different aspects of financial, economic, and environmental factors. In the present study, the nonlinearity is determined between financial development and carbon dioxide emissions in the long-run and short-run periods. According to the finding, the continued financial development initially increases the carbon dioxide emissions in the short and long run. Simultaneously, the square term of financial development reduces carbon dioxide emissions and proves the inverted U-shaped hypothesis in the short and long periods. The consumption of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide emissions, leading to environmental pollution. In contrast, renewable energy sources have fostered ecological sustainability by reducing CO 2 emissions in the long and short term. At the same time, a positive response from labor productivity to carbon dioxide emissions causes environmental pollution, while capital formation is not acknowledged as a significant contributor to CO 2 emissions. The Error Correction term has ascertained the reduction in error and convergence of the model from short to long term with a speed of 8% per annum. The study suggested that renewable energy and financial development should be indorsed for environmental preservation in developing European and Central Asian economies. Financial development in favor of low-cost renewables, advancing cleaner production methods, solar paneling, and electrification are a few possible remedies to achieve environmental sustainability in the short-run as well as long-run time frame., (© 2021. Elevated noise level is an emerging global problem. Therefore, the present work is conducted that can improve, increase, and integrate the already known issue in literature with new information coming from an emerging country such as Pakistan. The objectives of this study were (i) to assess the urban noise levels and traffic density of Chiniot and Jhang and (ii) to determine nonauditory health effects of noise levels on the residents of both cities. Noise levels were examined from 181 locations (103 from Jhang and 78 from Chiniot) and categorized into hospitals, educational, religious and recreational, residential, industrial areas, and traffic intersections. A-weighted noise level measurements were taken using an integrated sound level meter which recorded short-term road traffic noise continuously for 15 min at each location (LA eq15 ). The urban noise data showed 82% of the sites in Jhang (LA max = 103 dB) and 95% in Chiniot (LA max = 120 dB) exceeded the noise limits set by the National Environment Quality Standard of Pakistan (NEQS-Pak) and World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, higher intensity of noise levels (LA eq15 ≥ 100 dB) was recorded in Chiniot (17 sites) than in Jhang (1 site). Regression analysis showed a relatively strong relationship of traffic density with noise at Chiniot (R 2 = 0.48) compared to Jhang (R 2 = 0.31). However, spatial variability of noise with traffic density was observed in both cities. Survey study revealed that all the respondents in Jhang and Chiniot suffered from many noise-related health problems such as annoyance (53 and 51%), depression (45 and 47%), dizziness (61 and 65%), headache (67 and 64%), hypertension (71 and 56%), hearing loss (53 and 56%), physiological stress (65 and 65%), sleeplessness (81 and 84%), and tinnitus (70 and 62%) due to noise, respectively. We conclude that noise levels are higher in Chiniot primarily due to high road traffic and secondarily due to high population density. Developing economies are suffering to fulfill the sustainable environment's commitments in fiscal imbalance. This study attempted to highlight the core issue of fiscal imbalance in developing economies and its impact on a sustainable environment. For this purpose, the study utilized generalized least squares (GLS) and quantile autoregressive distributive lag (QARDL) on a 19-year dataset (2000-2018) of the South Asian region. The results of GLS indicate that fiscal imbalance contributing positively to South Asia's environmental degradation process. Here, energy consumption (due to dirty sources of energy) and energy intensity (due to inefficient energy conversion technology) are also sources of environmental degradation in this region. The results of QARDL confirm that economic and political fluctuations can be the long-run source of fiscal imbalance in this region, which ultimately slows down the process of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) theory and contributes positively to environmental degradation. Salinity harms crop productivity; thereby, the management of salt-affected soils is a prerequisite to obtaining optimum crop yields and achieving UN-SDGs. The application of bio-organic amendments is an eco-friendly and cost-effective technique for the management of salt-affected soils. Therefore, this study examined the effect of salt-tolerant Bacillus subtilis strain Y16 and biogas slurry (BGS) on growth, physiology, and yield of sunflower under salt-affected soil conditions. Three levels of soil salinity (original electrical conductivity (EC): 3 dS m -1 ; induced EC: 6 dS m -1 and 8 dS m -1 ) were evaluated against three levels of BGS (0 kg ha -1 , 600 kg ha -1 , and 800 kg ha -1 ) with and without bacterial inoculation. Soil salinity (EC = 8 dS m -1 ) significantly (P < 0.05) increased Na + contents (86%), which significantly (P < 0.05) reduced growth (17-56%), physiology (39-53%), and yield (58%) of sunflower. However, the combined application of BGS and B. subtilis alleviated salt stress and significantly (P < 0.05) improved sunflower growth (11-179%), physiology (10-84%), and yield (106%). The correlation analysis showed the superiority of B. subtilis for inducing salt-stress tolerance in sunflower as compared to BGS through homeostasis of K + /Na + ratio. The tolerance indices and heat map analysis revealed an increased salt-stress tolerance in sunflower by the synergistic application of BGS and B. subtilis at original (3 dS m -1 ) and induced (6 dS m -1 ) soil salinity. Based on the results, we conclude that the combined application of B. subtilis and BGS enhanced growth and yield of sunflower by improving physiological processes and adjustment of K + /Na + ratio in shoot under moderate salt-stress soil conditions., (© 2021. This study was carried out to screen historical diversity panel of bread wheat against municipal wastewater (MW) and remediated wastewater (RW) irrigation to find tolerant and sensitive genotypes and their impact on yield attributes. The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three water treatments, i.e., tap water (TW), RW, and MW. Yield attributes, health risk assessment, water and soil chemistry were recorded. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify tolerant and sensitive genotypes of wheat on the basis of metal accumulation. Metal accumulation in grains increased in pattern K > Fe > Zn in all irrigation treatments. Tolerant genotypes in MW showed lowest hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) values (adults 0.62; children 0.67) for Fe and Zn as compared to sensitive genotypes (adults 1.53; children 1.70). However, HI values in sensitive and tolerant genotypes of RW were recorded < 1. Mean values of yield attributes, i.e., plant height, spike length, spikelet per spike, grains per plant, biological yield, grain yield, and thousand kernel weight, were recorded in pattern, i.e., MW > RW > TW. In this study, yield attributes and human health are affected in both cases of higher and lower concentration of Fe and Zn metal. It is suggested that tolerant genotypes can prove useful for cultivation in areas receiving MW and also provide molecular breeding opportunities for seeking tolerance against metal stresses., (© 2021. Discharge of untreated textile wastewaters loaded with dyes is not only contaminating the soil and water resources but also posing a threat to the health and socioeconomic life of the people. Hence, there is a need to devise the strategies for effective treatment of such wastewaters. The present study reports the catalytic potential of biogenic ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized by using a bacterial strain Pseudochrobactrum sp. C5 for degradation of dyes and wastewater treatment. The catalytic potential of the biogenic ZnO NPs for degradation of dyes and wastewater treatment was also compared with that of the chemically synthesized ones. The characterization of the biogenic ZnO NPs through FT-IR, XRD, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) indicated that these are granular agglomerated particles having a size range of 90-110 nm and zeta potential of -27.41 mV. These catalytic NPs had resulted into almost complete (> 90%) decolorization of various dyes including the methanol blue and reactive black 5. These NPs also resulted into a significant reduction in COD, TDS, EC, pH, and color of two real wastewaters spiked with reactive black 5 and reactive red 120. The findings of this study suggest that the biosynthesized ZnO NPs might serve as a potential green solution for treatment of dye-loaded textile wastewaters.

Stone crushing processes release particulates and associated noxious substances in our surroundings that are continuously destructing environmental conditions and ecosystem health. Morpho-anatomical changes in some medicinally important native species (Aerva javanica, Calotropis procera, Digera muricata, Euphorbia prostrata, Euploca strigosa, and Peganum harmala) exposed to heavy dust pollution were evaluated. These species selected on the basis of their ubiquitous distribution in the area. Two sites were selected in the Kirana Hills, Sargodha, one near stone crushers within 500-m radius (polluted) and the other 4 km away from the crushers (control) varying significantly in amount of dust particles received. A decrease in plant height of all species from dust-polluted sites was observed. Reduction in height was more prominent in species like C. procera and D. muricata. Stem sclerification increased in C. procera and E. prostrata from the polluted site that is an indication of better tolerance to dust pollution. C. procera showed increased stem and leaf epidermis, stem sclerenchyma, and stem vascular bundles, which can increase resistance to dust pollution. E. strigosa was the most sensitive species in which all morpho-anatomical factors decreased. Survival of plant species depended on specific structural modifications in dermal, mechanical, parenchymatous, and vascular tissue. Overall, dust pollution severely affected plant morphological and micro-morphological traits, but the response of selected species to dust pollution was variable. It is concluded that stem and leaf anatomical traits like size of dermal and storage tissue thickness and stomatal density are good indicators for biomonitoring of dust pollution.

Solar radiation (SR) is essential for yield improvement in lentil, which is a crop of marginal environments. Herein, experiments were conducted over 2 years under a semi-arid environment to study the radiation interception (RI), efficiency, growth, and development of three lentil genotypes (Punjab Masoor-2009 (PM-2009), NIAB Masoor-2006 (NM-2006), and NIAB Masoor-2002 (NM-2002)) in relation to three nitrogen rates (13, 19, and 25 kg ha -1 ). Seasonal dynamics of intercepted photoactive radiation (IPAR) and cumulated photosynthetic photon flux density were highly associated with seasonal dynamics of leaf area index (LAI), with a high value of R 2 (0.93 and 0.89) across all nitrogen rates and genotypes in both years. Nitrogen application promoted growth, and maximum LAI (3.97 and 3.57) and RI (324 and 301 MJ m -2 ) were attained for the first and second years of study, respectively. Biomass and yield were positively associated with IPAR. Variation in radiation absorption (RA) among genotypes was due to different patterns of LAI development. In both years, yield (23% and 25%) and radiation use efficiency (RUE) for grain yield (0.44 and 0.37 g MJ -1 ) were respectively higher for PM-2009 than for the other genotypes. Genotype PM-2009 had 15 days shorter crop cycle than others while 14% higher GDDs accumulated in the first year compared with the second due to the higher temperature. High nitrogen (25 kg ha -1 ) application resulted in higher dry matter (DM), and grain yield (GY), while RUE and PAR were not statistically different under 19 kg N ha -1 application across years. Genotypes PM-2009 and NM-2006 may perform reasonably well under arid to semi-arid regions at farmer field. These findings may assist researchers and crop modelers to optimize the lentil ideotype for efficient light utilization.

The high-risk organic pollutants produced by industries are of growing concern. The highly porous coal-based activated carbon (AC) having a specific surface area of 3452.8 m 2 /g is used for the adsorption of azo dye from synthetic solution. The sorbent is characterized through BET, SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, and zeta potential. The sorbent exhibits - 18.7 mV surface charge, which is high enough for making suspension. The maximum dye uptake of 333 mg/g is observed in sorbent under acidic medium. The thermodynamics parameters like ∆G, ∆H, and ΔS were found to be - 12.40 kJ mol -1 , 39.66 kJ mol -1 , and 174.55 J mol -1  K -1 at 293 K, respectively, revealing that the adsorption mechanism is spontaneous, endothermic, and feasible. The experimental data follows the Langmuir and D-R models. The adsorption follows pseudo 2nd-order kinetics. DFT investigation shows that the dye sorption onto AC in configuration No. 4 (CFG-4) is more effective, as this configuration has high ∆H (enthalpy change) and adsorption energy (E ads ). This is confirmed by Mullikan atomic charge transfer phenomenon.

The study proposes an empirical model (based on stimulus-organism-response as conceptual framework) to analyse sojourners' intention to adopt green practices (i.e., electronic consumption behaviour). Specifically, the proposed model comprises ethical, ecological and economic concerns as stimuli while mapping sojourners' altruistic traits and beliefs in climate change, which further lead to their green behaviour. The study investigates a sample of 1184 sojourners in China. Results highlight that sojourners' perceived concerns (stimuli) are partially mediated by sojourners' altruistic traits and beliefs in climate change while defining their green behaviour. The novel contributions of the current study include determining sojourners' green behaviour, the role of scientific literacy and regulatory policy in green behaviour and generalising and proposing the concept of sojourner leakage (adapted from tourism leakage). The study emphasises that sojourners can be strategic stakeholders by involving them in designing, implementing and communicating green policies and reforms in diverse societies.

Anthropogenic activities are a major source for contaminating the agricultural soil with heavy metals, which can affect physiological and metabolic processes in plants. Among the heavy metals, chromium (Cr) is the most toxic pollutant that negatively affects plants' metabolic activities, growth, and yield. Chromium reduces the plant growth and development by influencing the photosynthetic performance and antioxidant enzyme activities. This study was designed to examine the promotive role of exogenously applied glycinebetaine (GB) on plant morphophysiological and biochemical attributes in cauliflower (Brassica oleracea botrytis L.) under Cr toxicity. Four levels (0, 10, 100, and 200 μM) of Cr were tested under the application of GB (1 mM). The results delineated that Cr stress caused a considerable reduction in plant growth, photosynthetic pigment, gas exchange parameters, and biomass production. At high concentration (200 μM), chromium stress decreased the plant height (57%), root length (32%), number of leaves (45%), and leaf area (29%) as compared with controls. Due to Cr stress, the electrolyte leakage and accumulation of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide increased both in the roots and leaves of cauliflower, whereas antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, and POD) decreased both in the roots and leaves of cauliflower due to Cr stress. At 200 μM of chromium treatment, root dry weight, stem dry weight, leaf dry weight, and flower dry weight declined up to 43%, 40%, 53%, and 72%, respectively. With the application of GB, dry biomass of plant increased significantly as compared with no GB treatment under chromium stress. As Cr level increased in growth media, its concentration also increased in all plant parts including roots, stem, leaves, and flowers. However, GB application efficiently alleviated the Cr toxic effects on cauliflower and maintained higher plant growth, biomass production, photosynthetic attributes, and gas exchange traits as compared with their respective controls. Exogenously applied GB decreased oxidative stress and improved antioxidative enzyme activities as compared with treatments without GB application. Furthermore, Cr concentrations taken by plants were decreased due to GB application. These findings suggest that GB can play a positive role to maintain plant morphology and photosynthetic attributes under Cr toxic conditions in cauliflower.

Faisalabad is one of the major industrial cities of Pakistan, which may cause noise pollution to the local residents due to the development of robust industrial and transport systems. This study aimed at (i) mapping the noise pollution levels at various locations of Faisalabad city; (ii) comparing noise pollution levels in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening for each source; and (iii) assessing nonauditory effects of noise on human health. Two industries and 43 famous/busy locations of Faisalabad Sadar were selected to study noise pollution by using the sound level meter for the period of 24 h. A questionnaire-based survey was carried out near the sampling points to get a public perception about the health impacts of noise pollution. The measured equivalent sound pressure levels (SPLeq) were higher than the permissible limits at all the sampling locations during morning, afternoon, and evening hours. The maximum sound pressure level (SPL max ) was 102 dB inside the production unit in the afternoon at Mian Muhammad Siddiq Textile Loom industry. The average SPL was found at State Bank road (102 dB), Children's Hospital (101 dB), Jhang Bazar (100 dB) in the afternoon and at Punjab Medical College in the evening (97 dB). Based on the survey, 94% of respondents reported headache, 76% sleeplessness, 74% hypertension, 74% physiological stress, 64% elevated blood pressure levels, and 60% dizziness due to noise. Noise pollution is higher than the standard limits and causes auditory as well as nonauditory effects on humans. The vehicles and industrial machinery should be maintained, and sound proofing and protection equipment should be provided to the workforce in order to protect them from extreme noise levels.

The extreme temperatures and uneven distribution of rainfall associated with climate change are expected to affect agricultural productivity and food security. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of climate change on wheat in southeastern regions of Turkey. The CERES-wheat crop simulation model was calibrated and evaluated with data from eight surveyed farms. The four farms were used for calibration and four for evaluation. Climate change scenarios were developed for the middle (2036-2065) and late 21st century (2066-2095) under representative concentration pathways (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5) for study sites in Islahiye and Nurdagi. Model calibration results showed a good agreement between observed and simulated yield with only a 1 to 11% range of error. The model evaluation results showed good fit between observed and simulated values of all parameters with % error ranged from 0.51 to 13.3%. Future climate change projections showed that maximum temperature (Tmax) will increase between 1.6 °C (RCP4.5) and 2.3 °C (RCP8.5), while minimum temperature (Tmin) will increase between 1.0 °C (RCP4.5) and 1.5 °C (RCP8.5) for mid-century. At the end of the century, Tmax is projected to increase from 2 °C (RCP4.5) to 4 °C (RCP8.5) and Tmin from 1.3 °C (RCP4.5) to 3.1 °C (RCP8.5). Climate change impacts results showed that future rise in temperature will reduce wheat yield by 16.3% in mid-century and 16.8% at the end of the century at Islahiye and for Nurdagi, while 13.0% in mid and 14.4% end of the century. The use of climate and crop modeling technique provides useful information in evaluating the climate change impacts and may assist stakeholders to make decisions to overcome the negative impacts in the near and long term.

This study was conducted to investigate the changes in leaf physiological parameters to abiotic stress induced by different levels of cement dust. On day 15, Arachis hypogaea L. plants (sowing day was considered as day 0) were divided into six groups, and cement was sprinkled over plants with the help of hand pump, twice a week at T 1 (5 g pot -1 ), T 2 (8 g pot -1 ), T 3 (10 g pot -1 ), T 4 (15 g pot -1 ), T 5 (20 g pot -1 ), and T 0 /control (0 g pot -1 ), until fruit maturity. Morphometric parameters such as root and shoot length, leaf area, and seed weight were significantly higher in T 0 , while the minimum was recorded in T 5 . Physiological analyses of leaves and roots revealed a remarkable reduction (p < 0.05) in sugar, amino acid, and protein contents, while the concentration of enzymatic antioxidants was increased in cement-treated plants. The concentration of abscisic acid in leaves was significantly higher in treatment groups as compared with control, while gibberellic acid concentration was low. Strikingly, cement dust decreases the level of leaf photosynthetic pigments, reduces stomatal conductance, and adversely affects photosynthesis. Leaf histological analysis revealed confirmatory evidence of stomatal closure, cell damage, reduced cell area, and abridged leaf thickness. Salient features of the present study provide useful evidence to estimate cement dust as a critical abiotic stress factor, which has adverse effects on photosynthesis, leaf anatomical features, stomatal functioning, and productivity. Our work opens new avenues for a deep portfolio of cement-based stress mediating pathophysiology in Arachis hypogaea.

Climate change adversely affects food security all over the world, especially in developing countries where the increasing population is confronting food insecurity and malnutrition. Crop models can assist stakeholders for assessment of climate change in current and future agricultural production systems. The aim of this study was to use of system analysis approach through CSM-CERES-Millet model to quantify climate change and its impact on pearl millet under arid and semi-arid climatic conditions of Punjab, Pakistan. Calibration and evaluation of CERES-Millet were performed with the field observations for pearl millet hybrid 86M86. Mid-century (2040-2069) climate change scenarios for representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 were generated based on an ensemble of selected five general circulation models (GCMs). The model was calibrated with optimum treatment (15-cm plant spacing and 200 kg N ha -1 ) using field observations on phenology, growth and grain yield. Thereafter, pearl millet cultivar was evaluated with remaining treatments of plant spacing and nitrogen during 2015 and 2016 in Faisalabad and Layyah. The CERES-Millet model was calibrated very well and predicted the grain yield with 1.14% error. Model valuation results showed that there was a close agreement between the observed and simulated values of grain yield with RMSE ranging from 172 to 193 kg ha -1 . The results of future climate scenarios revealed that there would be an increase in T min (2.8 °C and 2.9 °C, respectively, for the semi-arid and arid environment) and T max (2.5 °C and 2.7 °C, respectively, for the semi-arid and arid environment) under RCP4.5. For RCP8.5, there would be an increase of 4 °C in T min for the semi-arid and arid environment and an increase of 3.7 °C and 3.9 °C in T max , respectively, for the semi-arid and arid environment. The impacts of climate changes showed that pearl millet yield would be reduced by 7 to 10% under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 in Faisalabad and 10 to 13% in Layyah under RCP 4.5 and 8.5 for mid-century. So, CSM-CERES-Millet is a useful tool in assessing the climate change impacts.

Reutilization of putrescible municipal solid wastes (MSW) in agriculture can provide valuable plant nutrients. However, it may pose serious noncarcinogenic health risks for a human when contaminants, especially the heavy metals in MSW, end up in plants through the waste-soil-plant continuum. This study examined the effects of composting methods viz. aerobically (AC), anaerobically (ANC), and aerobic-anaerobically (AANC) composted MSW material on (i) fertilizer value: vegetable yield, nitrogen (N) mineralization, and apparent N recovery (ANR); and (ii) associated health risks: selected heavy metal concentration, daily intake of metals (DIM), health risk index (HRI), hazard index (HI), and target hazard quotient (THQ) when applied to a loamy soil. All the aforementioned compost materials were incorporated into the sandy loam soil filled in pots and carrot and spinach were cultivated for 85 and 90 days, respectively. After soil application, between 51 and 56% of the applied organic N was mineralized from ANC material, while the values in case of AC and AANC were 26-31% and 34-40%, respectively. Consequently, dry matter yield and vegetable N uptake from composts were in the order ANC > AANC > AC (P < 0.05). Further, vegetable ANR was the highest from ANC (56 and 56%) than AANC (42 and 45%), and AC (30 and 33%) for spinach and carrot, respectively (P < 0.05). Interestingly, plant uptake of lead and cadmium was lowest from ANC as compared to AC or AANC (P < 0.05), irrespective of the vegetable type. Consequently, DIM, HRI, and THQ for these metals were substantially lower in the former as compared to the latter compost materials. Further, HI from ANC material was 50% lower over the unfertilized control indicating the absence of noncarcinogenic human health risks via vegetable intake. This all indicates that from viewpoint of sustainable waste recycling in agriculture, anaerobic composting is superior to the other composting methods.

Uncertainty in future availability of irrigation water and regulation of nutrient amount, management strategies for irrigation and nitrogen (N) are essential to maximize the crop productivity. To study the response of irrigation and N on water productivity and economic return of maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield, an experiment was conducted at Water Management Research Center, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2015 and 2016. Treatments included of full and three reduced levels of irrigation, with four rates of N fertilization. An empirical model was developed using observed grain yield for irrigation and N levels. Results from model and economic analysis showed that the N rates of 235, 229, 233, and 210 kg ha -1 were the most economical optimum N rates to achieve the economic yield of 9321, 8937, 5748, and 3493 kg ha -1 at 100%, 80%, 60%, and 40% irrigation levels, respectively. Economic optimum N rates were further explored to find out the optimum level of irrigation as a function of the total water applied using a quadratic equation. The results showed that 520 mm is the optimum level of irrigation for the entire growing season in 2015 and 2016. Results also revealed that yield is not significantly affected by reducing the irrigation from full irrigation to 80% of full irrigation. It is concluded from the study that the relationship between irrigation and N can be used for efficient management of irrigation and N and to reduce the losses of N to avoid the economic loss and environmental hazards. The empirical equation can help farmers to optimize irrigation and N to obtain maximum economic return in semi-arid regions with sandy loam soils.

In semiarid regions, deficit and unpredictable precipitation results in yield losses. Uniconazole is a plant growth regulator and its application is beneficial in water saving agriculture and improves maize production in semiarid regions. In order to determine the effects of uniconazole application on seed filling and hormonal changes of maize, a field study was conducted in the summer of 2015 and 2016. Seeds were soaked in uniconazole at concentration of 0 (SCK), 25 (S 25 ), 50 (S 50 ), and 75 (S 75 ) mg kg -1 , while in the second experiment, uniconazole was applied to the foliage at concentration of 0 (FCK), 25 (F 25 ), 50 (F 50 ), and 75 (F 75 ) mg L -1 at the eight-leaf. Uniconazole application significantly improves the seed filling rates by regulating the endogenous hormones contents. Uniconazole seed soaking treatments improved significantly the seed filling rate of superior, middle, and inferior seeds compared with foliar application treatments. Uniconazole improved significantly the zeatin (Z) + zeatin riboside (ZR) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents while reducing the gibberellic acid (GA) content in the seeds during the process of seed filling. The Z + ZR and ABA contents were significantly positively correlated while the GA content was negatively correlated with maximum seed weight, maximum seed filling rates, and mean seed filling rates. Treatments S 25 and F 25 significantly improved the above dry matter accumulation plant -1 , seed filling rates, ABA, Z + ZR contents, characters of ear, and grain yield while reduced the GA content. It is concluded from our results that the uniconazole application at concentration of 25 mg kg -1 as seed soaking or 25 mg L -1 foliar applied at the eight-leaf stage is beneficial to improve the seed filling rates and grain yield of maize in semiarid regions.

Lodging is a major constraint contributing to poor grain yield and quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. The use of plant growth regulators is becoming a foremost agro-chemical approach for minimizing the risk of lodging in cereal crops. The present study was conducted to examine the effects of the paclobutrazol application on culm physical strength, lignin content, and lodging resistance of wheat. Wheat seeds were soaked in paclobutrazol at the concentrations of 0 (CK, as control), 200 (PB1), 300 (PB2), and 400 (PB3) mg L -1 . Our results showed that paclobutrazol resulted in a dose-dependent decrease of plant height, internode length, and center of gravity height. Paclobutrazol treatments evidently increased the culm diameter, culm filling degree, and wall thickness of basal internodes, resulting in greater stalk-breaking strength and lodging resistance index (CLRI), where their maximum values were obtained with PB1 treatment. In addition, the activities of lignin-related enzymes were improved by paclobutrazol, particularly at low concentration, which increased the lignin accumulation of the basal internodes of wheat, subsequently improving the capability of stalk lodging resistance. Moreover, the correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between stem diameter, culm filling degree, and lignin with stalk bending strength and CLRI. The paclobutrazol concentration ≥ 300 mg L -1 (PB2 and PB3 treatments) showed inhibitive effects on various culm morphological traits. These results suggest that not only the plant height, but also the lignin contents and physical strength of internodes are closely related with the lodging resistance of wheat, and reduction in plant height along with improved culm morphological characteristics and higher lignin accumulation in basal internodes could effectively relieve the risk of lodging.

Continuous addition of undesired effluents to the environment affects foliar surface of leaf, changes their morphology, stomata, photosynthetic pigments, and biochemical constituents which result in massive damage due to persistent nature of the pollutant. In persistent hostile environment, plants fail to grow and develop, and the effects are often extensive. In current study, landscape plants were exposed to different levels of road dust to analyze the effect on various photosynthetic pigments. Dry roadside sediments were collected through a vacuum pump and passed through filters to get fine particles less than 100 μm and sprinkled on Euphorbia milii (EM), Gardenia jasminoides (GJ), and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (HRs) by using a hand pump, twice daily at T 1 (control), T 2 , T 3 , and T 4 (0, 2, 4, and 6 g/plant, respectively) for a period of 3 months in green house. Road sediment significantly reduces leaf pigments in landscape plants population and the effects were more severe in high level of dust deposition. Individual response of EM, GJ, and HRs to different levels of road dust was variable; however, road sediment significantly reduces leaf pigments at high dose of roadside dust deposition. EM plants exposed to 2 g/plant roadside dust showed higher chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, total chlorophyll, chlorophyllide-b, and polar carotenoid contents as compared to GJ and HRs. Leaf chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, and polar carotenoid contents of EM were higher than GJ and HRs in T 3 and T 4 treatments. However HRs showed significantly higher protochlorophyllide, chlorophyllide-a, and pheophytin-b contents of leaf in T 4 group. EM was found as tolerant landscape plant followed by HRs. GJ was most vulnerable to road dust stress. Present study concludes that the entire biosynthesis of leaf pigments is in chain and interlinked together where effect of road dust on one pigment influences other pigments and their derivatives. Salient features of the present study provide useful evidence to estimate roadside dust as a major risk factor for plant pigments, and plants in green belt along roadside suffer retarded growth and fail to establish and develop.

One of the most serious environmental issues of the present century is metal contamination of the aqueous environment due to the release of metal-containing effluents into the water bodies. Cadmium (Cd) is one of the toxic heavy metals which is not biodegradable thereby causing high risks to animals, plants, and humans. In the present study, potential and feasibility of compost derived from fruits and vegetables for Cd biosorption from aqueous solution were investigated. The batch biosorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of Cd concentrations (5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/L), compost biomass (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/100 mL), pH (4, 6, and 8), contact time (1, 4, and 19 h), and temperature (28 and 35 °C) on Cd sorption and removal by compost. The biosorption of Cd was found to be highly dependent on initial Cd concentration, sorbent biomass, pH, contact time, and temperature of aqueous solution. It was observed that Cd sorption by compost was rapid up to 4 h, and then it became slow and stable as the contact time shifted towards equilibrium state (19 h). At equilibrium, the Cd sorption (q = 0.33-5.43 mg/g compost) and removal (45-99%) were observed at pH 6 and temperature 28 °C depending upon Cd concentrations and sorbent biomass in aqueous solution. The equilibrium experimental data were fitted well with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (q max  = 6.35-7.14 mg/g compost, R 2  = 0.77-0.98). FTIR spectrum of the compost indicated the presence of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, which might be involved in the biosorption of Cd through ion exchange and complexation mechanisms. The optimal environmental conditions (pH 6, sorbent biomass 0.5 g/100 mL, and temperature 28 °C) induced more Cd sorption on compost at equilibrium. Results show compost as a cost-effective adsorbent material having high potential for heavy metal remediation from aqueous solution.

This study aimed to assess the mechanisms of innate immune function responses to silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticle functionalized with dithiocarbamate groups (IONP) exposure alone and its associated mercury (Hg) in European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) phagocytes isolated from peritoneum (P-phagocytes), gill (G-phagocytes), head kidney (HK-phagocytes) and spleen (S-phagocytes). The study evaluated viability, phagocytosis, oxidative burst activity (OBA) and lipid peroxidation (LPO). Four groups were made: (1) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + RPMI-1640 (control), (2) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + IONP (2.5 mg L(-1)), (3) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + Hg (50 μg L(-1)) and (4) 2 × 10(6) phagocytes + IONP + Hg. Samplings were performed at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure. A. anguilla P-, G-, HK- and S-phagocytes in vitro exposure to IONP alone revealed either increased (except HK-phagocytes at 16 h) or no change in viability, suggesting that the cells are metabolically active and resistant to IONP exposure alone. In terms of phagocytes overactivation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production as an indirect mechanism of immunotoxicity, the phagocytes responded in the following manner: P- > S- > HK- = G-phagocytes for IONP exposure alone, S- > HK- > P- = G-phagocytes for Hg exposure alone and HK- > G- = S- > P-phagocytes for concomitant exposure. Overall, considering Hg as a surrogate for metals and its association with IONP, as well as the likelihood that it could pose a serious threat to aquatic organisms by modulating their immune defense mechanisms if accidentally discharged into the aquatic environment, current results suggest that the step of IONP-metal complex removal must not be underrated and should be processed without any more ado.

This work investigated the accumulation, allocation, and impact of zinc (Zn; 1.0 μM-10 mM) in maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings under simulated laboratory conditions. Z. mays exhibited no significant change in its habitus (the physical characteristics of plants) up to 10-1000 μM of Zn (vs 5-10 mM Zn). Zn tolerance evaluation, based on the root test, indicated a high tolerance of Z. mays to both low and intermediate (or relatively high) concentrations of Zn, whereas this plant failed to tolerate 10 mM Zn and exhibited a 5-fold decrease in its Zn tolerance. Contingent to Zn treatment levels, Zn hampered the growth of axial organs and brought decreases in the leaf area, water regime, and biomass accumulation. Nevertheless, at elevated levels of Zn (10 mM), Zn(2+) was stored in the root cytoplasm and inhibited both axial organ growth and water regime. However, accumulation and allocation of Zn in Z. mays roots, studied herein employing X-ray fluorimeter and histochemical methods, were close to Zn accumulator plants. Overall, the study outcomes revealed Zn tolerance of Z. mays, and also implicate its potential role in Zn phytoextraction.

Titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have received wide attention in diverse application, but the potential impact of these nanomaterials on the environment, aquatic life and especially on fish cell lines is lacking. The present study aimed to investigate the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by TiO2 NPs on Chinook salmon cells derived from Oncorhynchus tshawytscha embryos (CHSE-214). The The MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide] and neutral red (NR) assays in CHSE-214 cells exposed to TiO2 NPs revealed concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect in the range of 10 to 60 μg/ml for 24 h. CHSE-214 cells exposed to TiO2 NPs (10-60 μg/ml) exhibited significant decline in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) glutathione (GSH) content and increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) in a concentration-dependent manner. TiO2 NPs induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in CHSE-214 cells which serve as a base line studies for future studies.

Having multidisciplinary applications, iron oxide nanoparticles can inevitably enter aquatic system and impact inhabitants such as fish. However, the studies in this context have ignored the significance of obvious interaction of iron oxide nanoparticles with other persistent co-contaminants such as mercury (Hg) in the modulation of the toxicity and underlying mechanisms of iron oxide nanoparticles and Hg alone, and concomitant exposures. This study aimed to evaluate lipid peroxidation (LPO) and its control with glutathione (GSH) and associated enzymes (such as glutathione reductase, GR; glutathione peroxidase, GPX; glutathione sulfo-transferase, GST) in European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) hepatocytes exposed to stressors with following schemes: (i) no silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with dithiocarbamate (Fe3O4@SiO2/Si DTC, hereafter called 'FeNPs'; size range 82 ± 21 to 100 ± 30 nm) or Hg, (ii) FeNPs (2.5 μg L(-1)) alone, (iii) Hg (50 μg L(-1)) alone and (iv) FeNPs + Hg concomitant condition during 0 to 72 h. The exhibition of a differential coordination between GSH regeneration (determined as GR activity) and GSH metabolism (determined as the activity of GPX and GST) was perceptible in A. anguilla hepatocytes in order to control FeNPs, Hg and FeNPs + Hg exposure condition-mediated LPO. This study revealed the significance of a fine tuning among GR, GPX and GST in keeping LPO level under control during FeNPs or Hg alone exposure, and a direct role of total GSH (TGSH) in the control of LPO level and impaired GSH metabolism under the concomitant (FeNPs + Hg) exposure. An interpretation of the fish risk to FeNPs in a multi-pollution state should equally consider the potential outcome of the interaction of FeNPs with other contaminants.

Heavy metal ions such as cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) are considered essential/beneficial for optimal plant growth, development, and productivity. However, these ions readily impact functions of many enzymes and proteins, halt metabolism, and exhibit phytotoxicity at supra-optimum supply. Nevertheless, the concentrations of these heavy metal ions are increasing in agricultural soils worldwide via both natural and anthropogenic sources that need immediate attention. Considering recent breakthroughs on Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, and Zn in soil-plant system, the present paper: (a) overviews the status in soils and their uptake, transport, and significance in plants; (b) critically discusses their elevated level-mediated toxicity to both plant growth/development and cell/genome; (c) briefly cross talks on the significance of potential interactions between previous plant-beneficial heavy metal ions in plants; and (d) highlights so far unexplored aspects in the current context.

Stress factors provoke enhanced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plants. ROS that escape antioxidant-mediated scavenging/detoxification react with biomolecules such as cellular lipids and proteins and cause irreversible damage to the structure of these molecules, initiate their oxidation, and subsequently inactivate key cellular functions. The lipid- and protein-oxidation products are considered as the significant oxidative stress biomarkers in stressed plants. Also, there exists an abundance of information on the abiotic stress-mediated elevations in the generation of ROS, and the modulation of lipid and protein oxidation in abiotic stressed plants. However, the available literature reflects a wide information gap on the mechanisms underlying lipid- and protein-oxidation processes, major techniques for the determination of lipid- and protein-oxidation products, and on critical cross-talks among these aspects. Based on recent reports, this article (a) introduces ROS and highlights their relationship with abiotic stress-caused consequences in crop plants, (b) examines critically the various physiological/biochemical aspects of oxidative damage to lipids (membrane lipids) and proteins in stressed crop plants, (c) summarizes the principles of current technologies used to evaluate the extent of lipid and protein oxidation, (d) synthesizes major outcomes of studies on lipid and protein oxidation in plants under abiotic stress, and finally, (e) considers a brief cross-talk on the ROS-accrued lipid and protein oxidation, pointing to the aspects unexplored so far.

The study aimed to assess the genotoxic potential of silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticle functionalized with dithiocarbamate groups (IONP, 100 nm) in vitro exposure alone or its interference with mercury (Hg) co-exposure in the blood of European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) by evaluating 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA). Four groups were made: (i) 2 × 10(6) erythrocytes + Roswell Park Memorial Institute-1640 (RPMI-1640) (control), (ii) 2 × 10(6) erythrocytes + IONP (2.5 mg L(-1)), (iii) 2 × 10(6) erythrocytes + Hg (50 μg L(-1)), and (iv) 2 × 10(6) erythrocytes + IONP + Hg. Blood plasma was also processed following the previous exposure conditions. Samplings were performed at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48, and 72 h of exposure. The results revealed significant ENA increases at both early (2, 4, 8) and late (16, 24, 48, 72) hours of exposure to IONP alone. However, IONP exposure combined with Hg co-exposure revealed no ENA increase at 2 h, suggesting that IONP-Hg complex formation is efficient to eliminate the DNA damage induced by individual exposure to IONP or Hg at early hours. Hence, the initial occurrence of antagonism between IONP and Hg was perceptible; however, at late hours of exposure, IONP was unable to mitigate the mercury-accrued negative impacts. Plasma exposure to IONP alone displayed a significant increase in 8-OHdG levels at 2 and 48 h of exposure. However, IONP in combination with Hg co-exposure revealed an increase in 8-OHdG levels at all the exposure length (except 16 h), suggesting that both IONP and Hg independently oxidized DNA. In addition, an additive effect on 8-OHdG levels at both early and late hours, and on LPO only at late hours (except 24 h), suggested that DNA is more susceptible to peroxidative damage than lipid.

Major endogenous biochemical properties can make plants ideal agents for metal/metalloid-contaminated site cleanup. This study investigates the biochemistry of Juncus maritimus (Lam) roots for its high mercury (Hg) stabilization potential in the sediments of the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal), which received Hg-rich effluents from a chlor-alkali industry between 1950 and 1994. J. maritimus plants were collected at a reference (R) site and three sites with the highest (L1), moderate (L2), and the lowest (L3) Hg contamination levels. The highest Hg-harboring/stabilizing J. maritimus roots at L1, exhibited significantly elevated damage endpoints (H2O2; lipid peroxidation, LPO; electrolyte leakage, EL; protein oxidation, PO; proline) which were accompanied by differential changes in H2O2-metabolizing defense system components (ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase), glutathione reductase and the contents of both reduced and oxidized glutathione. Trends in measured endpoints reached maximum levels at L1 followed by L2 and L3. Cross-talks on root-Hg status and the studied biochemical traits revealed (a) high Hg-accrued elevations in oxidative stress as an obvious response; (b) Hg-stabilization potential of J. maritimus roots as a result of a successful mitigation of elevated high Hg-induced H2O2, and its anomalies such as LPO, EL, and PO; and (c) the induction of and a fine synchronization between non-glutathione and glutathione-based systems. Overall, the study unveiled biochemical mechanisms underlying root tolerance to Hg burden-accrued anomalies which, in turn, helped J. maritimus during Hg-stabilization.

Human health is closely linked with soils via plants, grazers, or plant-based products. This study estimated plant-beneficial elements (macronutrients: K, P; secondary macronutrients: Ca, Mg; micronutrients: Mo, Mn, Na, Ni, Se) in both soils and shoots of two forage grass species (Eriophorum angustifolium and Lolium perenne) prevalent in the vicinity of a chemical industry complex (Estarreja, Portugal). Both soils and plants from the chemical industrial areas exhibited differential concentrations of the studied elements. In soils, the role of contamination was evidenced as insignificant in context of its impact on all the tested macro and secondary macronutrients except P, and micronutrients such as Mo and Ni. In forage grass plant shoots, the role of contamination was evidenced as insignificant in relation to its impact on all the tested macro and secondary macronutrients except K. Between the two forage grass plants, high Se-harboring L. perenne cannot be recommended for its use as animal feed.
