Domestic, agricultural and industrial water activities lead to organic and inorganic pollution of the environment. Biotreatment of municipal wastewater with the potential production of biomass is a valuable feature of microalgae. In this study we evaluated the effects of wavelength and light intensity on phosphate and ammonium removal on the one hand, and biomass and protein production on the other hand by Spirulina platensis in municipal wastewater treatment under semi batch cultivation. S. platensis was inoculated at 40% in artificial wastewater open pond system. Red, blue and purple light with 3800, 4800 and 5800 lux light intensity under 12 h light and 12 h darkness were investigated. Cultivation was conducted in semi-batch conditions; after four days cultivation, one third of the culture was replaced with fresh medium. The highest biomass and protein concentrations were observed under blue light at 5800 lux light intensity, 5.45 and 3 g/l respectively cumulatively; while the highest amount of phosphate and ammonium removal were about 145 and 218 mg/l under purple light at 5800 lux intensity, respectively. The amounts of biomass and protein produced, as well as phosphate and ammonium removed, are therefore impacted by wavelength, light intensity, results show that light intensity and wavelength can be customized to reach on the one hand the highest biomass and protein production, and on the other hand to maximize the removal of phosphorous and ammonium. In this study, the degradation of paracetamol (PCT) by thermo-activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) and the feasibility of coupling thermo-activated peroxydisulfate to activated sludge culture were examined. The effect of the relevant parameters on the thermo activated peroxydisulfate process, namely temperature, PDS concentration, initial pH and initial PCT concentration was investigated. As observed, the solution pH did not have a significant effect on the PCT degradation. The temperature increased the degradation of PCT, while an increase of the initial PCT concentration impacted negatively its degradation yield. The PDS concentration showed an optimal value of 8 mM. The operating parameters were then optimized by using a central composite design (CCD). After performing a screening of the various factors, response surface analysis led to the following optimal conditions for the yield of PCT degradation: 0.33, 5 mM, pH = 6 and 68°C for the initial PCT concentration, the initial peroxydisulfate concentration and the temperature respectively, leading to the removal of 94.2% of PCT. Under these conditions, the BOD5/COD ratio increased from 0.008 initially to 0.34 after 10 h. Showing a significant improvement of the biodegradability; consequently and even if the limit of biodegradability (0.4) was not achieved, a biological treatment could be promisingly considered. Heterogeneous electro-Fenton mineralization of Acid Red 18 (AR18) in aqueous solution was studied with magnetite Fe3O4 (MNPs) and haematite Fe2O3 (HNPs) nanoparticles as catalysts. High mineralization yields of AR18 were obtained with magnetite, 81% TOC removal after 180 min of electrolysis in 40 mg L−1 Fe3O4, pH 3.0, at 50 mA of current intensity and in 50 mM Na2SO4. In order to explain the obtained mineralization yield achieved with MNPs, the quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (•OH) and iron leaching were performed at 50 and 100 mA. From the high iron concentration found in the bulk solution and the slight impact of the catalyst mass concentration on TOC removal, the formation of hydroxyl radicals occurs mainly through homogeneous process. In the presence of hydroxyl radical scavenger, degradation remained total after 15 min showing the involvement of a direct electrochemical oxidation of the dye at the electrode surface. Peroxidase from Brassica rapa was immobilized as cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) and used to treat air containing phenol as a model molecule of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Prior to an enzymatic treatment, phenol was absorbed into an aqueous or organic phase (silicone oil) to reach concentrations ranging from 20 to 160 mg/L. The process was carried out by introducing a desired weighing of BRP-CLEAs into preparations and reaction was started by injecting H2O2 solution to the medium. Optimization of the reaction conditions in the organic solvent revealed an optimal contact time of 60 min, 60 mg/L of phenol concentration and 3 mM H2O2, leading to a maximum removal yield of 70% for 3.4 UI/mL of BRP-CLEAs. These results were compared to those obtained in an aqueous medium that showed 90% of degradation yield after 40 min in the following conditions, 90 mg/L of initial phenol amount, 2 mM of H2O2 and 2.5 UI/mL of BRP-CLEAs. Parameters of the Michaelis-Menten model, Km and Vmax, were also determined for the reaction in both phases. Phenol removal by BRP-CLEAs in silicone oil succeeded with 70% of conversion yield. Recently a new group of ionic liquids (ILs) with herbicidal properties has been proposed for use in agriculture. Owing to the design of specific physicochemical properties, this group, referred to as herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs), allows for reducing herbicide field doses. Several ILs comprising phenoxy herbicides as anions and quaternary ammonium cations have been synthesized and tested under greenhouse and field conditions. However, since they are to be introduced into the environment, appropriate treatment technologies should be developed in order to ensure their proper removal and avoid possible contamination. In this study, didecyldimethylammonium (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) acetate was selected as a model HIL to evaluate the efficiency of a hybrid treatment method. Electrochemical oxidation or electro-Fenton was considered as a pretreatment step, whereas biodegradation was selected as the secondary treatment method. Both processes were carried out in current mode, at 10 mA with carbon felt as working electrode. The efficiency of degradation, oxidation and mineralization was evaluated after 6 h. Both processes decreased the total organic carbon and chemical oxygen demand (COD) values and increased the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) on the COD ratio to a value close to 0.4, showing that the electrolyzed solutions can be considered as ‘readily biodegradable.’ [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A solid/liquid system involving activated sludge immobilized in an agar medium and a non-aqueous phase liquid containing the target pollutant has been considered to treat a model hydrophobic volatile organic compound, toluene. The positive impact of the use of a multiphase bioreactor is that the organic phase constitutes a pollutant reservoir and also helps to overcome possible pollutant toxicity. In addition and to overcome the drawbacks of the use of a solid organic phase (high pressure drop and low mass transfer) instead of a liquid organic phase, the considered solid phase was the aqueous. Consequently, silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane) which showed its relevance for implementation in multiphase bioreactors was used. Promising results were observed from the analysis of toluene in the gaseous phase; for an initial amount of 2 g L−1related to the organic phase, a v/v ratio of 0.5 of the organic phase to the aqueous agar phase, total toluene consumption was observed in about 9 days, leading to a global biodegradation rate of approximately 3.1 mg L−1 h−1, namely in the range of values previously observed in liquid/liquid systems. A combined process coupling photocatalysis and a biological treatment was investigated for the removal of Bezacryl yellow (BZY), an industrial-use textile dye. Photocatalytic degradation experiments of BZY were carried out in two stirred reactors, operating in batch mode with internal or external irradiation. Two photocatalysts (TiO2P25 and TiO2PC500) were tested and the dye degradation was studied for different initial pollutant concentrations (10–117 mg L−1). A comparative study showed that the photocatalytic degradation led to the highest degradation and mineralization yields in a stirred reactor with internal irradiation in the presence of the P25 catalyst. Regardless of the photocatalyst, discoloration yields up to 99% were obtained for 10 and 20 mg L−1dye concentrations in the reactor with internal irradiation. Moreover, the first-order kinetic and Langmuir–Hinshelwood models were examined by using the nonlinear method for different initial concentrations and showed that the two models lead to completely different predicted kinetics suggesting that they were completely different.According to the BOD5/ Chemical oxygen demand (COD) ratio, the non-treated solution (20 mg L−1of BZY) was estimated as non-biodegradable. After photocatalytic pretreatment of bezacryl solution containing 20 mg/L of initial dye, the biodegradability test showed a BOD5/COD ratio of 0.5, which is above the limit of biodegradability (0.4). Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a recalcitrant xenobiotic pharmaceutical pollutant highly stable in soil and wastewater during treatment. The biodegradation of CBZ using streptomycetes has been few studied up to now. Sixteen newly filamentous bacteria belong to genusStreptomycesspp. isolated from different Romanian soil samples and three strains from a collection of microorganisms (MIUG) were morphologically characterized, tested based on their resistance against CBZ toxicity and then selected as agents for bioremediation. FiveStreptomycesspp. strains coded MIUG 4.88, MIUG 4.89, SNA, LP1 and LP2 showed CBZ tolerance at all of the tested concentrations, i.e. 0.05, 0.2, 1, 5 and 8 mg L−1. Two of these (MIUG 4.89 and SNA strains) were selected based on their resistance to target compound and were then assessed for CBZ biodegradation. The strainStreptomycesMIUG 4.89 showed an interesting efficiency for CBZ removal, with a yield of 35% when it was cultivated in submerged conditions on a minimal medium supplemented with 5 g L−1glucose. A two-phase partitioning bioreactor was considered to remove toluene contained in a biodegradable organic phase by activated sludge (AS). The selected solvent was hexadecane. In a first step, the biodegradation of toluene dissolved in hexadecane by AS was examined. In a second step, acclimation of the AS was carried out in order to improve the biodegradation rate. Acclimation improved toluene removal, since biodegradation yield increased from 72% to more than 91%. A total consumption was observed after only 4 days culture with acclimated AS, since the rest of the toluene corresponded to gas leak; while in the case of non-acclimated sludge, losses cannot account for all non-degraded toluene. Regarding hexadecane, acclimation also improved its degradation, from 43% to 79% after 6 days culture for non-acclimated and acclimated AS, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a substantial pollutant not only because of its high organic matter content and recalcitrant compounds such as polyphenols, but also due to its high chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand. Its degradation by means of hydroxyl radicals generated from microwave application in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and Cu(II) has been investigated. The optimal experimental conditions were found to be a microwave intensity of 680 W, the presence of Cu(II) and relatively concentrated hydrogen peroxide (12 mol L−1). In these conditions, discolouration of OMW reached 98.0±0.2% and phenolic compounds decreased to 81.8±0.2% of their initial concentration after 12 min microwave time. Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed that microwave degradation of phenols by means of the Fenton-like system Cu(II)/H2O2could be an efficient solution for the treatment of olive mill wastewater.
