The Device for Indirect Capture on Radionuclides (DICER) implements a new indirect technique for (n,γ) studies in which the neutron capture rate is determined from analysis of resonance neutron transmission data. The DICER instrument and associated radionuclide production at the Isotope Production Facility (IPF), both at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), as well radioactive sample fabrication, have been under development in the last few years. First measurements on a radioactive sample (88Zr, t½=83.4 days), which was recently reported to have an extremely large thermal neutron capture cross section and resonance integral [1, 2], are planned for the winter of 2021. A performance overview, brief details on the 88Zr fabrication and proof of good operation results will be presented.

Two measurements of fission γ rays were performed with the DANCE and NEUANCE arrays using the reactions 235 U(n, f) and 252 Cf(sf). Utilizing the fast time response of the detectors and a method for estimating the accidental background, we obtained the energy spectrum of the late prompt fission γ rays as a function of the time since fission. The experimental results are compared with predictions of the code CGMF folded with GEANT4 simulations of the detector response.

Experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility using shaped laser pulses with more than 1 MJ of energy have demonstrated the ability to control the implosion symmetry under ignition conditions. To achieve thermonuclear ignition, the low mode asymmetries must be small to minimize the size of the hotspot. The symmetry tuning experiments use symmetry capsules, “symcaps”, which replace the DT fuel with an equivalent mass of CH to emulate the hydrodynamic behavior of an ignition capsule. The x-ray self-emission signature from gas inside the capsule during the peak compression correlates with the surrounding hotspot shape. By tuning the shape of the self-emission, the capsule implosion symmetry can be made to be “round.” In the experimental results presented here, we utilized crossbeam energy transfer [S. H. Glenzer, et al., Science 327, 1228 (2010)] to change the ratio of the inner to outer cone power inside the hohlraum targets on the NIF. Variations in the ratio of the inner cone to outer cone power affect the radiation pattern incident on the capsule modifying the implosion symmetry.

Uranium-233 plays an important role in the Th-U fuel cycle, which has been proposed as an alternative to the U-Pu fuel cycle due to its reduced amount of transuranium elements. The available experimental 233U(n,γ) cross section data in the literature are scarce, [1–3]. In 2008, the 233U(n,γ) cross section was investigated at LANL using the DANCE detector combined with a PPAC, however the statistics in the keV regime were inadequate for a reliable extraction of the cross section at 100 keV. An accurate measurement of the 233U(n,γ) cross section is required by the NCSP to complete the neutron-induced cross section data; a new evaluation reported the need of 233U capture data. The challenge in this measurement lies in the difficulty of measuring capture cross section data due to the competing capture and fission channels. Fission reactions are around one order of magnitude more likely than capture for 233U. The accuracy in the capture cross section measurement relies on the discrimination between the γ-rays produced in capture and fission reactions, for which an experimental setup combining capture and fission detectors is needed. Following this requirement, a new measurement has been performed at LANSCE combining the γ-ray array DANCE with the neutron detector NEUANCE to identify fission and neutron-capture events. This measurement will provide results of the 233U capture-to-fission ratio in the Resolved and Unresolved Resonance regions.

The isomeric ratios for the neutron capture reaction 176Lu(n,γ) to the Jπ = 5/2−, 761.7 keV, T1/2 = 32.8 ns and the Jπ = 15/2+, 1356.9 keV, T1/2 = 11.1 ns levels of 177Lu, have been measured for the first time with the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. These measured isomeric ratios are compared with TALYS calculations.

The isomeric ratio for the neutron capture reaction 176Lu(n,γ) on the Jπ= 5/2−, 761.7 keV, T1/2=32.8 ns level of 177mLu, has been determined in the neutron energy range 8.5 eV-100 keV for the first time using the DANCE array at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The DANCE (Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments) array located at the Los Alamos national laboratory has been used to obtain the neutron capture cross sections for the 175Lu and 176Lu isotopes with neutron energies from thermal up to 100 keV. Both isotopes are of current interest for the nucleosynthesis s-process in astrophysics and for applications as in reactor physics or in nuclear medicine. Three targets were used to perform these measurements. One was natLu foil and the other two were isotope-enriched targets of 175Lu and 176Lu. The cross sections are obtained for now through a precise neutron flux determination and a normalization at the thermal neutron cross section value. A comparison with the recent experimental data and the evaluated data of ENDF/B-VII.0 will be presented. In addition, resonances parameters and spin assignments for some resonances will be featured.
