Multinucleon transfer (MNT) reactions have been demonstrated as a promising pathway to produce and study very neutron-rich heavy nuclei, which can enhance our understanding of the nuclear structural features relevant to the r-process. Translead fragments were produced from the MNT reaction approach using 136Xe+209Bi at IGISOL utilizing an MNT gas cell. The 211Bi, 211mPo, 211Po, and 212mPo nuclei have been observed prominently in the α-decay spectrum. The Geant4 simulation, which played a crucial role in optimizing the experimental parameters, reveals broader angular-energy distributions of MNT fragments released from a thick target compared to those observed from the GRAZING and Langevin models for a mono-energetic beam. Comparative yield analyses of MNT fragments for 136Xe+209Bi and 136Xe+176Yb reactions estimated using Geant4 Simulation as well as analytical formula support the production of many neutron-rich unknown mass nuclei in the rare-earth region.

Experimental determination of the cross sections of proton capture on radioactive nuclei is extremely difficult. Therefore, it is of substantial interest for the understanding of the production of the p-nuclei. For the first time, a direct measurement of proton-capture cross sections on stored, radioactive ions became possible in an energy range of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The experiment was performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI by making use of a sensitive method to measure (p,γ) and (p,n) reactions in inverse kinematics. These reaction channels are of high relevance for the nucleosyn-thesis processes in supernovae, which are among the most violent explosions in the universe and are not yet well understood. The cross section of the 118Te(p,γ) reaction has been measured at energies of 6 MeV/u and 7 MeV/u. The heavy ions interacted with a hydrogen gas jet target. The radiative recombination process of the fully stripped 118Te ions and electrons from the hydrogen target was used as a luminosity monitor. An overview of the experimental method and preliminary results from the ongoing analysis will be presented.

The experimental data collected during the S515 experiment performed by the R3B collaboration at GSI/FAIR represent a great opportunity to investigate nucleon knockout reactions of exotic nuclei in the region of Sn using complete kinematics measurements. These cross sections can be used in the future to investigate the quenching in the knockout of the minority species (neutrons or protons) in nuclei far from stability. Some of the arguments put forward are the underestimation of the knockout of deeply bound nucleons, final state interactions or the role of short-range correlations (SRC). Recently, several works based on inclusive measurements have shown that these SRCs could reduce the single nucleon knockout cross sections by around 50%, depending on the neutron excess (N/Z) of the initial projectile. The S515 data can help us to go further in this investigation because it allows to correlate the knockout cross sections of one, two or more nucleons with the number of protons and neutrons emitted from the target and which can be detected by the CALIFA and NeuLAND detectors, respectively, and perform complete kinematical studies on the nature of the event (SRC, evaporation, emission of clusters, final-state interactions...). Here the results obtained for the charge distribution of reaction residues are presented, which is one of the first steps of the still on-going analysis.

The current understanding of light hypernuclei, which are sub-atomic nuclei with strangeness, is being challenged and studied in detail by several European research groups and collaborations. In recent years, studies of hypernuclei using high-energy heavy ion beams have reported unexpected results on the three-body hypernuclear state 3ΛH, named the hypertriton. For some time, reports of a shorter lifetime and larger binding energy than what was previously accepted have created a puzzling situation for its theoretical description; this is known as the "hypertriton puzzle". With the inclusion of the most recent experimental measurements, the current status of the hypertriton puzzle is evolving. Additionally, the possible neutral bound state of a Λ hyperon with two neutrons, nnΛ, has raised questions about our understanding of the formation of light hypernuclei either in bound or resonance states. These results have initiated several ongoing experimental programs all over the world to study these three-body hypernuclear states precisely. We are studying these light hypernuclear states by employing heavy ion beams at 2AGeV on a fixed carbon target with the WASA detector system and the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The WASA-FRS experimental campaign was performed during the first quarter of 2022, and this paper presents a short overview of the campaign and how it seeks to tackle the hypertriton and nnΛ puzzles. Data analysis is ongoing, and several preliminary results will be reported.

An experiment was performed at GSI with the objective of measuring theβ-intensity distribution in the decay of Hg, Au and Pt isotopes around N=126 using the total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy technique. The aim is to benchmark theoretical models used to make predictions of half-life and neutron emission probabilities of exotic nuclei involved in the rapid neutron capture process, leading to the synthesis of very heavy elements. This paper presents some experimental details and the current status of the analysis.

We lack significant nuclear physics input to understand the rapid-neutron capture (r-)process fully. The r-process is the source of half the elements heavier than iron and the only way to produce the long-lived actinides we find on earth. This process’s key nuclear physics inputs are nuclear masses, cross-sections of (n,γ) and (γ,n), and decay half-lives and branching ratios of neutron-rich isotopes. However, there is currently no method to directly measure neutron-induced reaction rates on short-lived nuclides, so there is no experimental data for the primary nuclear reaction that drives the r-process. We show here a conceptual design of a novel approach to access this information experimentally. The idea is to form a target of short-lived isotopes by confining them as ions in a radio-frequency (RF) trap. Next, they are irradiated with an intense neutron flux, and the reaction products are identified by mass spectrometry. The chosen method is a two-stage process in the presence of high neutron fluxes. The first process is neutron-induced fission in a thin actinide foil to create fission fragments. These fragments are slowed down in a cryogenic stopping cell before being filtered through a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) system. The RFQ system selects fission fragments of a specific atomic mass number A and confines them to a small volume in an RF trap, where they are irradiated for a second time in a controlled manner. The resultant A+1 isotopes are mass-selectively transported to a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer, where the reaction products are identified and counted.

Precision experiments with relativistic fragments separated in-flight require special experimentalmethods to overcome the inherent large emittance from the creation in nuclear reactions and atomic interactions in matter. At GSI relativistic exotic nuclei have been produced via uranium projectile fragmentation and fission and investigated with the inflight separator FRS directly, or in combination with either the storage-cooler ring ESR or the FRS Ion Catcher. 1000 A·MeV 238U ions were used to create 60 new neutron-rich isotopes separated and identified with the FRS to measure their production cross sections. In another experimental campaign the fragments were separated in flight and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR for accurate mass and lifetime measurements. In these experimentswe have obtained accurate new mass values analyzed via a novel method which has reduced the systematic errors for both Schottky Mass Spectrometry (SMS) and for Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS). Pioneering experiments have been carried out with the FRS Ion Catcher consisting of three experimental components, the dispersive magnetic system of the FRS with a monoenergetic and a homogeneous degrader, a cryogenic stopping cell filled with pure helium and a multiple-reflection time-of flight mass separator. The FRS Ion Catcher enables high precision spectroscopy experiments with eV to keV exotic nuclides. Results from these different FRS experiments are presented in this overview together with prospects for the next-generation facility Super-FRS. The novel features of the Super-FRS compared with the present FRS will be discussed in addition.
