CERN IT has consolidated all life-cycle management of its physical server fleet on the Ironic bare-metal API. From the initial registration upon the first boot, over the inventory checking, the burn-in and the benchmarking for acceptance, the provisioning to the end users and the repairs during its service, up to the retirement at the end of the servers' life, all stages can be managed within this framework. This article will walk you through the server's life in the CERN data center, and explain how this enables us to handle a fleet of almost 10,000 nodes in an automated and efficient way and to prepare for the new data center which is currently being built. Eventually, we will round up things with the top challenges we faced when moving to this system, like the transparent adoption of already in-production nodes, after-the-fact inventory updates, or scaling issues. The INFN Tier1 data center is currently located in the premises of the Physics Department of the University of Bologna, where CNAF is also located. During 2023 it will be moved to the "Tecnopolo", the new facility for research, innovation, and technological development in the same city area; the same location is also hosting Leonardo, the pre-exascale supercomputing machine managed by CINECA, co-financed as part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, 4th ranked in the top500 November 2022 list. The construction of the new CNAF data center consists of two phases, corresponding to the computing requirements of LHC: Phase 1 involves an IT power of 3 MW, and Phase 2, starting from 2025, involves an IT power up to 10 MW. The new data center is designed to cope with the computing requirements of the data taking of the HL-LHC experiments, in the time spanning from 2026 to 2040 and will provide, at the same time, computing services for several other INFN experiments and projects, not only belonging to the HEP domain. The co-location with Leonardo opens wider possibilities to integrate HTC and HPC resources and the new CNAF data center will be tightly coupled with it, allowing access from a single entry point to resources located at CNAF and provided by the supercomputer. Data access from both infrastructures will be transparent to users. In this presentation we describe the new data center design, providing a status update on the migration, and we focus on the Leonardo integration showing the results of the preliminary tests to access it from the CNAF access points. Computational science, data management and analysis have been key factors in the success of Brookhaven National Laboratory's scientific programs at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS-II), the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), and in biological, atmospheric, and energy systems science, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) and Materials Science, as well as our participation in international research collaborations, such as the ATLAS Experiment at Europe's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (Switzerland) and the Belle II Experiment at KEK (Japan). The construction of a new data center is an acknowledgement of the increasing demand for computing and storage services at BNL in the near term and enable the Lab to address the needs of the future experiments at the High-Luminosity LHC at CERN and the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL in the long term. The Computing Facility Revitalization (CFR) project is aimed at repurposing the former National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS-I) building as the new data center for BNL. The construction of the new data center was finished in 2021Q3, and it was delivered for production in early FY2022 for all collaborations supported by the Scientific Data and Computing Center (SDCC), including STAR, PHENIX and sPHENIX experiments at RHIC collider at BNL, the Belle II Experiment at KEK (Japan), and the Computational Science Initiative at BNL (CSI). This paper highlights the key mechanical, electrical, and networking components of the new data center in its final configuration as used in production since 2021Q4 and gives an overview for the extension of the central network systems into the new data center and the migration of a significant portion of IT load and services from the old data center to the new data center carried out in 20212023, with expected completion of the main phase of the gradual IT equipment replacement and migration from the old data center into the new one set to the end of FY2023 (Sep 30, 2023). Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) as part of the refurbishment of one of its's data centres will install water to water heat pumps to use the heat produced by the computing servers to provide heat for the university via a district heating system. This will reduce the use of high carbon intensity natural gas heating boilers, replacing them with electricity which has a lower carbon intensity due to the contribution from wind, solar, hydroelectric, nuclear and biomass sources of power sources. The QMUL GridPP cluster today provides 15PB of storage and over 20K jobs slots mainly devoted to the ATLAS experiment. The data centre that houses the QMUL GridPP cluster, was originally commissioned in 2004. By 2020 it was in significant need of refurbishment. The original design had a maximum power capacity of 200KW, no hot/cold aisle containment, down flow air conditioning units using refrigerant cooling and no raised floor or ceiling plenum. The main requirements of the refurbishment are: To significantly improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon usage of the University; Improve the availability and reliability of the power and cooling; Increase the capacity of the facility to provide for future expansion; Provide a long term home for the GridPP cluster to support the computing needs of the LHC and other new large science experiments (SKA/LSST) into the next decade. After taking into account the future requirements and likely funding allocation, floor space in the data centre and the space available to house the cooling equipment the following design was chosen: A total power capacity of 390KW with redundant feeds to each rack; 39 racks with an average of 10KW of power per rack (flexible up to 20KW); An enclosed hot aisle design with in row cooling units using water cooling; water to water heat pumps connected to the universities district heating system An overview of the project, it's status and expected benefits in power and carbon saving are presented. Anomaly detection in data center IT and physical infrastructure is challenging due to the amount of heterogeneous data to be analyzed. Defining a solution that early identifies unexpected anomalies is particularly important to prevent data losses, breakdown of the system, and any other event considered to be critical for the activity of the data center. In the context of the INFN CNAF data center, one of the WLCG Tier-1s, we have performed a study based on monitored cooling, electrical, and IT hardware and software metrics to identify anomalies. In the present work, we aim to explore statistical approaches and machine learning solutions in the anomaly detection field for time series numerical metrics related to IT and physical infrastructure sensors. With the usage of statistical Z-score and percentile approaches and clustering DBSCAN technique, we have been able to group and identify anomalous events. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, currently in construction in Chile, will start performing the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) in 2025 for 10 years. Its 8.4-meter telescope will survey the southern sky in less than 4 nights in six optical bands, and repeatedly generate about 2 000 exposures per night, corresponding to a data volume of about 20 TiB every night. Three data facilities are preparing to contribute to the production of the annual data releases: the US Data Facility will process 35% of the raw data, the UK data facility will process 25% of the raw data and the French data facility, operated by CC-IN2P3, will locally process the remaining 40% of the raw data. In the context of the Data Preview 0.2 (DP0.2), the Data Release Production pipelines have been executed on the DC-2 simulated dataset (generated by the Dark Energy Science Collaboration, DESC). This dataset includes 20 000 simulated exposures, representing 300 square degrees of Rubin images with a typical depth of 5 years. DP0.2 ran at the Interim Data Facility (based on Google cloud), and the full exercise was independently replicated at CC-IN2P3. During this exercise, 3 PiB of data and more than 200 million files were produced. In this contribution we will present a detailed description of the system that we set up to perform this processing campaign using CC-IN2P3's computing and storage infrastructure. Several topics will be addressed: workflow generation and execution, batch job submission, memory and I/O requirements, etc. We will focus on the issues that arose during this campaign and how we addressed them and will present some perspectives after this exercise. The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) is a large-scale collaboration which gathers computing resources from more than 170 computing centers worldwide. To fulfill the requirements of new applications and to improve the long-term sustainability of the grid middleware, newly available solutions are being investigated. Like open-source and commercial players, the HEP community has also recognized the benefits of integrating cloud technologies into the legacy, grid-based workflows. Since March 2021, INFN has entered the field of cloud computing establishing the INFN CLOUD infrastructure. This platform supports scientific computing, software development and training, and serves as an extension of local resources. Among available services, virtual machines, Docker-based deployments, HTCondor (deployed on Kubernetes) or general-purpose Kubernetes clusters can be deployed. An ongoing R&D activity within the ATLAS experiment has the long-term objective to define an operation model which is efficient, versatile and scalable in terms of costs and computing power. As a part of this larger effort, this study investigates the feasibility of an automated, cloud-based data analysis workflow for the ATLAS experiment using INFN CLOUD resources. The scope of this research has been defined in a new INFN R&D project: the INfn Cloud based Atlas aNalysis faciliTy, or INCANT. The long-term objective of INCANT is to provide a cloud-based system to support data preparation and data analysis. As a first project milestone, a proofof-concept has been developed. A Kubernetes cluster equipped with 7 nodes (total 28 vCPU, 56 GB of RAM and 700 GB of non-shared block storage) hosts an HTCondor cluster, federated with INFN's IAM authentication platform, running in specialized Kubernetes pods. HTCondor worker nodes have direct access to CVMFS and EOS (via XRootD) for provisioning software and data, respectively. They are also connected to a NFS shared drive which can optionally be backed by an S3-compatible 2 TB storage. Jobs are submitted to the HTCondor cluster from a satellite, Dockerized submit node which is also federated with INFN's IAM and connected to the same data and software resources. INFN-CNAF is one of the Worldwide Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (WLCG) Tier-1 data centers, providing support in terms of computing, networking, storage resources and services also to a wide variety of scientific collaborations, ranging from physics to bioinformatics and industrial engineering [1]. Recently, several collaborations working with our data center have developed computing and data management workflows that require access to S3 storage services and/or the integration with POSIX capabilities. Nevertheless, the access to the data must be regulated by federated authentication and authorization mechanisms, such as OpenID Connect (OIDC), which is largely adopted by communities like WLCG [2] and within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) [3]. In the present work, the possibility to regulate POSIX access by integrating JSON Web Token (JWT) [4] authentication, provided by INDIGO-IAM as Identity Provider [5], with solutions based on S3 (for object storage) and WebDAV (for hierarchical storage) protocols has been evaluated an related results have been reported. In such respect, a comparison between the performance yielded by S3 and WebDAV protocols has been carried out within the same distributed environment with the aim to better identify the solution most suitable for the different use cases. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is preparing to execute the most ambitious astronomical survey ever attempted, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Currently the final phase of construction is under way in the Chilean Andes, with the Observatory's ten-year science mission scheduled to begin in 2025. Rubin's 8.4-meter telescope will nightly scan the southern hemisphere collecting imagery in the wavelength range 320–1050 nm covering the entire observable sky every 4 nights using a 3.2 gigapixel camera, the largest imaging device ever built for astronomy. Automated detection and classification of celestial objects will be performed by sophisticated algorithms on high-resolution images to progressively produce an astronomical catalog eventually composed of 20 billion galaxies and 17 billion stars and their associated physical properties. In this article we present an overview of the system currently being constructed to perform data distribution as well as the annual campaigns which reprocess the entire image dataset collected since the beginning of the survey. These processing campaigns will utilize computing and storage resources provided by three Rubin data facilities (one in the US and two in Europe). Each year a Data Release will be produced and disseminated to science collaborations for use in studies comprising four main science pillars: probing dark matter and dark energy, taking inventory of solar system objects, exploring the transient optical sky and mapping the Milky Way. Also presented is the method by which we leverage some of the common tools and best practices used for management of large-scale distributed data processing projects in the high energy physics and astronomy communities. The CERN IT Storage group operates multiple distributed storage systems to support all CERN data storage requirements. The storage and distribution of physics data generated by LHC and non-LHC experiments is one of the biggest challenges the group has to take on during LHC Run-3. EOS [1], the CERN distributed disk storage system is playing a key role in LHC data-taking. During the first ten months of 2022, more than 440PB have been written by the experiments and 2.9EB have been read out. The data storage requirements of LHC Run-3 are higher than what was previously delivered. The storage operations team has started investigating multiple areas to upgrade and optimize the current storage resources. A new, dedicated and redundant EOS infrastructure based on 100Gbit servers was installed, commissioned and deployed for the ALICE Online and Offline (O2) project. This cluster can sustain high-throughput data transfer between the ALICE Event Processing Nodes (EPN) and the CERN's data center. This paper will present the architecture, techniques and workflows in place allowing EOS to deliver fast, reliable and scalable data storage to meet experiment needs during LHC Run-3 and beyond. The Storage Group in the CERN IT Department operates several Ceph storage clusters with an overall capacity exceeding 100 PB. Ceph is a crucial component of the infrastructure delivering IT services to all the users of the Organization as it provides: i) Block storage for OpenStack, ii) CephFS, used as persistent storage by containers (OpenShift and Kubernetes) and as shared filesystems by HPC clusters and iii) S3 object storage for cloud-native applications, monitoring and software distribution across the WLCG. The Ceph infrastructure at CERN is being rationalized and restructured to allow for the implementation of a Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery plan. In this paper, we give an overview of how we transitioned from a single cluster providing block storage to multiple ones, enabling Storage Availability zones, and how block storage backups can be achieved. We also illustrate future plans for file systems backups through cback,a restic-based scalable orchestrator, and how S3 implements data immutability and provides a highly available, Multi-Data Centre object storage service. The new unified monitoring architecture (MONIT) for the CERN Data Centres and for the WLCG Infrastructure is based on established open source technologies to collect, stream, store and access monitoring data. The previous solutions, based on in-house development and commercial software, have been replaced with widely- recognized technologies such as Collectd, Kafka, Spark, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB, Grafana and others. The monitoring infrastructure, fully based on CERN cloud resources, covers the whole workflow of the monitoring data: from collecting and validating metrics and logs to making them available for dashboards, reports and alarms. The deployment in production of this new DC and WLCG monitoring is well under way and this contribution provides a summary of the progress, hurdles met and lessons learned in using these open source technologies. A small Cloud infrastructure for scientific computing likely operates in a saturated regime, which imposes to optimize the allocation of resources. Tenants typically pay a priori for a fraction of the overall resources. Within this business model, an advanced scheduling strategy is needed in order to optimize the data centre occupancy. FaSS, a Fair Share Scheduler service for OpenNebula, addresses this issue by satisfying resource requests according to an algorithm, which prioritizes tasks according to an initial weight and to the historical resource usage of the project. In this proceedings, we are going to describe the implementation of FaSS Version 1.0, released in March 2017 as a product of the INDIGO-DataCloud project. The Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) provides added value to published and reference data, enabling scientific research with the data through innovative services and tools. As a long standing data centre it is important to maintain and update the processes that have been developed over many years, in particular to manage the increasing volume of publications and data. CDS presentations at the LISA conference have highlighted these developments, and a poster supporting these presentations showed the current CDS user interfaces. Astronomy is a fertile environment with collaborations leading to the elaboration of disciplinary standards. Deploying standards in data centers can be beneficial for long term preservation and it puts the discipline in the open data era. VizieR [1] is the CDS service dedicated to catalogues. It gathers data and tables, but also associated data like spectra or images coming from published papers or collaborations with various agencies. VizieR gives access to data through services to the astronomical community and preserves data for the long term. Several years ago, it became clear that it was worth applying for an external evaluation to certify that VizieR is a trustable data repository. The Data Seal of Approval (DSA) [2] is granted to repositories that are committed to archiving and providing access to scholarly research in a sustainable way. CDS applied to the DSA in particular for the VizieR catalogue service. The VizieR information system is based on accurate data documentation provided by specialists. Traditional latency-limited trigger architectures typical for conventional experiments are inapplicable for the CBM experiment. Instead, CBM will ship and collect time-stamped data into a readout buffer in a form of a time-slice of a certain length and deliver it to a large computer farm, where online event reconstruction and selection will be performed. Grouping measurements into physical collisions must be performed in software and requires reconstruction not only in space, but also in time, the so-called 4- dimensional track reconstruction and event building. The tracks, reconstructed with 4D Cellular Automaton track finder, are combined into event-corresponding clusters according to the estimated time in the target position and the errors, obtained with the Kalman Filter method. The reconstructed events are given as inputs to the KF Particle Finder package for short-lived particle reconstruction. The results of time-based reconstruction of simulated collisions in CBM are presented and discussed in details. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global Science experimental Data hub Center (GSDC) at Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) is a unique data center in South Korea established for promoting the fundamental research fields by supporting them with the expertise on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and the infrastructure for High Performance Computing (HPC), High Throughput Computing (HTC) and Networking. GSDC has supported various research fields in South Korea dealing with the large scale of data, e.g. RENO experiment for neutrino research, LIGO experiment for gravitational wave detection, Genome sequencing project for bio-medical, and HEP experiments such as CDF at FNAL, Belle at KEK, and STAR at BNL. In particular, GSDC has run a Tier-1 center for ALICE experiment using the LHC at CERN since 2013. In this talk, we present the overview on computing infrastructure that GSDC runs for the research fields and we discuss on the data center infrastructure management system deployed at GSDC.
