[article in Spanish] We created a web-based digital history resource, documenting the work of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus in Bembibre, Spain. The resource contains an interpretative historical narrative that examines the Sisters’ time in Bembibre and the development of their school, as well as a visualization of their historical context and the conceptual tools used in the research. The user can read the narrative, explore their photographs, listen to exchanges in the groups organized by the Sisters when the research began, but also learn about the larger historical framework in which they lived. The resource also invites contributions from users who lived this experience, and our intention is to help foster an online community of the Sisters’ former pupils and their descendants. The target users for this resource are researchers as well as the Sisters and former students of the school. The purpose of the work is twofold: one, to explore the new methods of conceptualizing and disseminating humanities research that are afforded by digital technology, and two, to make historical research accessible for the general public and to create a space for those who lived the experience in Bembibre and worked with the Sisters to be a part of the research. espanolEste articulo tiene como objetivo averiguar las iniciativas educativas para los congolenos con discapacidades durante la colonizacion belga, 1908-1960. Describimos que la discapacidad era una razon importante para la fundacion de la colonia belga y se puede suponer que un numero importante de congolenos tenian discapacidades. Sin embargo, no existe ninguna investigacion historica sobre este asunto. Es esta laguna en particular sobre la que queremos investigar en profundidad. Con este fin, hemos consultado diversas fuentes, a veces contradictorias. Ademas de la literatura basica sobre la colonizacion belga y la literatura mas especifica sobre la discapacidad en relacion con la cultura, consultamos varios archivos, material audiovisual y tambien incluimos algunos testimonios. La principal conclusion es que en la mayor parte del periodo colonial no se presto ninguna o muy poca preocupacion por los congolenos con discapacidades. Esto se explica por la poca diferenciacion hecha por los propios congolenos. Argumentamos que el negro era considerado un individuo extranjero y, por lo tanto, el factor adicional de la discapacidad no se noto. En los ultimos anos de la colonizacion hay diferentes iniciativas educativas, las cuales se explican por el probable aumento de diferenciacion entre los mismos congolenos al final de la epoca de colonizacion.How to reference this articleVerhaegen, E., Verstraete, P., & Depaepe, M. We found out disability strongly influenced the foundation of the Belgian colony and that it can be assumed that a significant number of Congolese in the Belgian colony were disabled. Yet no historical research about this subject can be found. The subject seemed to be hardly neglected and overlooked. It is this particular contradiction or silence in historiography that this article wants to elucidate. For this purpose, various and sometimes conflicting sources have been consulted. In addition to basic literature on the Belgian colonization and more specific literature on disability in relation to culture, various archives, such as audiovisual material and oral witnesses of this particular period have been included in this research. Our main finding is that in most of the colonial period little or no educational initiatives were provided for Congolese people with disabilities. This we explain by the very limited differentiation which was made between the Congolese themselves. We argue that the black man as such was considered as a rather alien figure and consequently the additional factor of disability remained hardly unnoticed.
