This article maps the characteristics and challenges involved in the institutionalization of journalism teaching at ECA, from the 1960s to the 1970s. Special attention is given to aspects of the school's educational project, curriculum, and its institutional design, in addition to the profiles of the teachers who founded the journalism course, with particular attention given to the role of one teacher who became the school's main leader - José Marques de Melo. This paper includes institutional documents and excerpts from interviews conducted with some of the institution's former professors during the aforementioned time period. Despite the obstacles experienced within the institution - particularly during the country's military dictatorship in the 1970s - this paper describes the teachers' early efforts to create the course, when they were conducting laboratory activities and research, holding seminars, and also articulating with the production sector. The department of journalism endeavored to become a leader in the debates on teaching and training professionals in the field, thus establishing the ECA's course as one of importance.
