Based on a comparative research on newspapers from 13 European countries, this paper explores the concept of journalists as a “transnational interpretative community” (Zelizer, 1993; Traquina, 2002). Conducted by the EU Kids Online network, a two-month media analysis (October-November 2007) was focused on news involving children and the internet. This comparison identifies particularities of national coverage, on the one hand, and shared cross-national narratives, on the one hand, these being particularly visible in the news coverage of two international events covered by almost all papers. A shared culture is therefore visible in the ways journalists frame risks and opportunities experienced by children online, not apart from the scarcity of attention to the communicative rights expressed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The making of journalism, specially the profession of journalist, is in the col¬lective imagination as a series of stereotypes and classifications. This paper aims to present a first draft of the journalist’s social image, through the de¬scriptions provided by the very field, as the result of a self-definition: the journalists by themselves. According to the social representations’ concept, this paper seeks to understand not only how journalists see and interpret themselves, but also whether and how they portray the dualities present in the modus operandi of the activity.

This paper presents the radio program named Dick Danello Parlando d’Amore which was broadcasted in the state of Sao Paulo from 1981 to 2016. The program can be understood as a document that integrates the radio memory of Brazil and reveals an understudied genre: programs for immigrants and their descendants. The article aims to analyze this language as letters from listeners, music selection, the language used by the performer Dick Danello. The theoretical basis of this study is formed by theories of the radio, of listening and affections pointing to the relevance of the sense of hearing and the bonds involving performers and listeners for the radio experience as well as studies on love and romantic songs. Interviews and consultations to archive documents are also part of this methodological approach. This article is expected to demonstrate the importance of love bonds for the construction of memory that programs targeting the community of Italian immigrants have produced throughout the history of the radio in Brazil.

The challenge of this paper is understanding the imaginary of Journalism transformations in the transition from the industrial to the post-industrial period when the mass media gave place to the media of the masses. To this end, it seeks to broaden the Journalism Theories perspective based on the contribution of the General Theory of Imaginary, as to better understand what variances and reminiscences in the images permeate the epistemological field of this object in crisis. This symbolic reading is constructed from the mythocritic of classical Brazilian journalism epistemology books from the industrial period, which constituted our foundation while tensioning the post-industrial dynamics. The analysis allowed us to understand that the images constellating in the imaginary of journalism are dynamized from their imaginary responses to ancestral drives: Myths of Time, Myths of Vision, Myths of Progress, and Myths of the Order. Hence this symbolic and mythic framework, we could highlight the imagens evoked by our contemporary times.

This paper intends to contribute to the deepening of the state of the art of journalism studies in relation to the journalist 's autonomy regarding the editorial policy of vehicles, based on the evaluation of the ethical implications involved in the epistemological question of the linguistic/pragmatic turn of the traditional scientific paradigms from positivist to constructivist. In this context, controversial issues in the field of journalism study are addressed, such as the concept of objectivity and the authorship of the journalist in the construction of the news. This purpose is pursued from the pragmatic contributions of George Mead and Charles Peirce to their continuations in more recent theorizations. The reflection problematizes the commitment of journalism to the ethics of communication and a post conventional moral posture based on the commitment of journalism with the strengthening of public authority and the empowerment of citizenship.

This theoretical article discusses the central purpose of journalism in democratic societies, which is to inform in a qualified sense. The paper brings a mapping of authors about the role of journalism in informing, from the first known thesis on journalism in 1690. In addition, it points out that the role of informing is primordial in the discourse of media companies, journalists and readers when they define the duty of journalism in society. From the understanding that one cannot understand the purpose of informing as a finalistic process, it is pointed out that it is necessary to differentiate information from journalistic information. It is concluded that the information must have some attributes of quality, without which it would be invalidating to classify an information as journalistic. In order to be qualified, the information must be verified, relevant, contextualized, plural and engaging.

This paper aims to analyze the criminalization of the social movements for land rights through mediatic discourses published in three online newspapers with greater circulation in Rondonia, a State in northern Brazil. The investigative choice relied on the Liga Camponesa dos Pobres, or LCP (Poor Peasants League), and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, MST (Landless Rural Workers Movement) due to the political representation and historical performance achieved by these movements in the State. For the studies, we categorized the most recurrent speeches about them: being terrorists, vandals and cangaceiros, to interdisciplinarly analyze them, in the light of Communication and Semiotics, and the Right to Land. The methodology with a qualitative approach was characterized based on the theoretical-bibliographic references, of a documentary and iconographic nature in said newspapers. According to the analysis, it can be concluded that the conflicts in the countryside in Rondonia and the growing number of homicides of militant farmers of the LCP and the MST are related to the criminalization exposed in the media.

The characteristic of political journalism, structured in the conflict, leads to believe that the struggle of forces occurs at all the time and in all the instances. This process involves a complex network of interests that give the news relevant political weight. This paper discusses the political news coverage in print publications from the perspective of frameworks studies (GAMSON; MODIGLIANI, 1989; GAMSON; LASCH, 1980; VIMIEIRO; MAIA, 2011) and Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011). The text is a part that shows the results of the master’s thesis “News frameworks of Sartori’s Government: the selection of sources in the newspaper Zero Hora”. The aspects of reality highlighted by the frames compose 17 main packages that synthesizes the frameworks of 2015 in a polarized way, with predominance of contestation frames versus reinforcement frames of the government. Regarding the sources, the data demonstrates the dichotomy between the government and the civil servants, indicating that the main political dispute in the State that year was between the public administration and their functionaries.

In this paper it is briefly analyzed the coverage of 2014’s FIFA World Cup (headquartered in Brazil) aired by the Brazilian TV newscast Jornal Nacional. We present empirical data collected in a research project conducted by the author that allow us to observe what is considered here as an adaptation in the editorial line of the television news. It is addressed the hypothesis that such variation would be potentially motivated by both the cultural relevance that football has in the country, and the interest of reaching higher audience ratings by Globo’s TV news program due to the coverage of the event. Additionally, it is pointed that the variation (observed both quantitatively and qualitatively in the categories of the typically aired news in that TV program) started before the beginning of the tournament.

The production of news related to the Pantanal area in Mato Grosso do Sul also is minimally present in the newspapers, as receive other approaches to environmental issues, showing that the preservation area is understood as the exploration area. It follows, by analysis, that the angle, presence and speech of news related to the Pantanal come as an instrument for firm economic issues, devaluing the biome and the relevant environmental considerations.

This text observe how the newspaper Gazeta do Povo (Curitiba) addresses environmental public policies during the period 2000 to 2009. The policies are the result of the attention that the government provides for certain topics and the need for a large number of people, in which case the environmental theme was highlighted from the last decades of the twentieth century, when the environmental problems brought to the attention of society . In this scenario, the media act as a space for debate, where we can see to what extent it gives the public discussion on the subject and also as a way to schedule the public sphere. The paper presents empirical data that allow you to observe what the most common themes and moments in which development of these actions the media gives more attention and makes the cover. The initial hypothesis that guides the work is that the themes do not appear in a balanced way and the media coverage has also fragmented, addressing the issue only as a means of disseminating the government agenda and not the debate preceding the establishment of policies and in its assessment.

This paper presents results of an evaluation of the quality of the coverage of issues associated to the preservation of rights of children and adolescents in the eight main newspapers of major cities of Bauru (Sao Paulo State) administrative region, from August 2008 to March 2009. In a total of 389 assessed stories, 66% portrayed acts of legal infraction and violence with children and adolescents as victims or perpetrators, with a fragmented and superficial perspective; 34% are greater approaches about public policies aimed at the preservation of social rights. The results show the existence of a smaller number, yet significant, of stories which presented extended and more contextualized approaches. From a general view, we can point out that the contribution given by the media as a form of vigilance over the execution of public policies has been limited, which justifies the concern of demanding, from the mass media, measures to fulfill the role attributed to them by contemporaneous democracies to the strengthening of citizenship. This paper describes the results of a analysis upon the coverage about children social exclusion in Brazil, highlighting the relations between journalistic practice and public policies. The emphasis is upon the role of public policies citation (in the stories) as an indicator in the comparative analysis between “day-to-day news” and “special stories”, in Brazilian press media, from mid 1990’s to mid 2000’s. Despite the space increase for themes related to the youth rights among one decade, it seems that “minimum parameters” of the journalistic practice are hardly observed in the “day-to-day press”, comparing to the “special stories”.

Thus we present ethnography as a journalistic observation tool, which, providing the reporter of a better immersion in reality, allows for a media representation of science-in-progress, in the constructivist manner proposed by Bruno Latour, as well as a subjectivation of scientists, bringing them closer to ordinary people.

It argues that the adoption of these practices of exteriorization of the journalistic practice. Finally, some questions are placed on what these phenomena of the opening of the journalism field can represent in terms of legitimacy/delegitimacy journalism as an institution.

This paper has as main objective to suggest a news’ classification which we call non-news, a product strongly present in our lives nowadays. We analyze the most famous celebrity publication in Brazil, a magazine called Caras. Our hypothesis is that, the media creates a phenomenon of self feeding. Weapply some concepts from the News and Journalism theories, and we subvert the cannons. To analyse this case can help us to understand a new mediatic reality. In this environment, the news - the non-news – is a momentary result in which the media does not cover events that take place in the outside world, the media creates the non-news itself by self feeding.

The collection of this material occurred during the election period of 2012 and was replicated in the same period of 2013, year no election. Is discussed, compared, changes and maintenance with regard to the themes of the news and features that were the most read of the day these media analyzed in both periods. It is considered important to identify what kind of information draws attention of users in this space, under the assumption that news characterized as softnews (entertainment, celebrity and sports) offer little substantive to add to the debate, while hardnews (health, education, politics, violence, minorities, etc.) highlight issues of public interest. Altogether, there were 1,929 entries from 2012 and 1806 of 2013.

Placed between Literature and Journalism by amalgamating fact checking to the narrative aesthetics of fiction, Literary Journalism faces the challenge of producing works of ambiguous character. One of the factors in this dispute is the use of composite characters, created by combining biographic features of a number of sources in a single person. In this paper we discuss the borders between fact and fiction in this kind of narrative in two instances. The first is a historical one, with a focus on the profiles about Hugh Griffin Flood by American reporter Joseph Mitchell (1908-1996) published in the New Yorker magazine in the 1940s. The second one puts an emphasis on the separation between real and fake characters, treated as fraud in the press from the 1980s due to cases such as those of The Washington Post reporter Janet Cooke and The New York Times reporter Jason Blair, in 2003.

This paper performs a discussion about the death of journalist Vladimir Herzog starting from whose who have suffered tortures in the military regime. The main object of analysis is the documentary “Vlado: 30 anos depois”, produced by TV Cultura and directed by João Batista de Andrade. The methodology is based on a content analysis grounded in evidentiary paradigm, taking the film as an indicator of social life (in dialogue with the historical context in which it is inserted). Th e investigations undertaken indicate that the dictatorship’s victims narrate their stories not by a singular desire, but by concern for a story that could be overlooked because of the absence of images that could express their pain, which, however, does not preclude its remembrance by the media and journalism in particular.

Published at Jornal do Brasil from 1963 to 1993, Coluna do Castello is the journalistic column of greater longevity in the domestic press. At the column, the journalist Carlos Castello Branco used to post informative reports, analyzes and predictions on the directions of the national politics. Based on content analysis and the theory of journalistic genres and historical perspectives, this paper studies the texts published at Coluna do Castello in the early stage of the military dictatorship in Brazil (1963-1967), including the preparation and the coup d’etat of 1964, and the phase of stronger repression against the press (1968-1973) as the Institutional Act No. 5 was enacted.
