Less than 2% of physicians complete a research training (PhD) after the residency with a declining trend in those pursuing a clinical scientist pathway in pediatrics. The exposure to research methodology during the clinical training may play a role in engaging the next generations of pediatric physician scientist. Herein, we describe the experience of the Padova Physician Scientist Research Training (PPSRT) of the pediatric residency program at the University of Padova. The PPSRT was addressed to residents attending PGY2 to PGY4 of the pediatric program and consisted of two cores: a general one including in person or virtual lectures about research methodology in pediatrics including design of a clinical trial, writing of a scientific paper and statistical methods, and a subspecialties core for the discussion of research challenges in each area and the scientific writing activities. The perceived barriers to a research training and an evaluation of the program were assessed by an anonymized questionnaire. Sixty-four out 150 residents registered for the research training with 62/64 completing the two cores. The major perceived barrier to research during clinical training was the absence of protected time (89%) followed by the lack of specific funds (37%). The group activities lead to the publication of 24 papers. Conclusion: This is the first experience in the Italian pediatric training of a dedicated research program within the frame of postgraduate medical education. Our report highlights the need for protected time to promote research interest and nurture a new generation of physician scientists. Receiving information in the case of a positive or false-positive expanded newborn screening (ENBS) result for metabolic diseases is a stressful event. The availability of psychological support to families is crucial across the different communication steps and is recommended by different guidelines and position papers. However, more information is needed about the availability of psychological resources in the ENBS process. This national survey aimed to provide an overview of the availability of psychological resources for parents who received communication of positivity at the ENBS in the 23 Italian centers and how the support is provided to parents. An online survey was sent to the Heads of the ENBS centers asking about the availability of a clinical psychologist, their involvement in the ENBS process, and an estimation of parents receiving psychological support. More than 60% of the centers report having a clinical psychologist in the ENBS team; however, in more than 50% of cases, the psychologist does not participate in the consultation with parents (nor for the first consultation post-positivity or at confirmation of diagnosis). Furthermore, nearly 60% of the centers reported the experience of parental rejection of psychological sessions. Conclusion: There is a need for harmonization among the Italian ENBS centers concerning the availability of psychological resources and how these resources are provided to families. Parents' needs remained only partially fulfilled. The Authors Chang Liu B.S and Yuan Shi commented our paper on Fluid restriction in management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in Italy. With our study, we conducted a prospective cross-sectional survey among all Italian Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to address conservative management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants below 29 weeks' gestational age (GA), with specific regard to fluid restriction (FR). The Authors wondered if the heterogeneity of use of fluid restriction both as a prophylactic tool and as a conservative tool when a hemodynamically significant PDA is diagnosed, was due to economic disparities among areas of the included centers. Conducting a secondary analysis of our data, we observed that if we separately consider the responses of two areas, northern and central-southern Italy, FR is slightly more frequently applied in Central and Southern regions (82%) as compared to Northern regions (78%), although this finding does not reach statistical significance. No correlation between the likelihood to adopt conservative measures and the amount of allowed fluid intake was found. The hypothesis that "less fluid intake resulted in milder clinical and echocardiographic presentations of PDA, and thus a lower rate of pharmacological treatment" cannot be supported by our current study design and might deserve future investigations. Oral sucrose is included in almost all recommendations for treatment of pain in newborns, but evidence if multiple doses might be more effective than a single standard dose is lacking. We designed a single-centre, double-blind, randomised, controlled trial. We enrolled preterm infants needing the heel prick procedure. Each enrolled infant was randomised to receive a single standard dose of sucrose 2 min before or a double dose of sucrose 2 min before, and 30 s after heel prick. Primary outcome was the efficacy of the two interventions tested by the premature infant pain profile-PIPP scale obtained at 30 s, 60 s, and 120 s after heel prick. Secondary outcome was the evaluation of the concordance between the PIPP scale and other pain scores more feasible in clinical practice. Seventy-two infants were randomised. No difference in pain perception as measured by the PIPP scale was found between the groups: median PIPP values 4.0(IQR 3.0-4.0) vs 3.0(IQR 3.0-4.0) at baseline; 6.0(IQR 5.0-10.0) vs 6.0(IQR 4.0-8.5) at 30 s; 6.0(IQR 4.0-7.0) vs 5.0(IQR 4.0-8.5) at 60 s and 5.0(IQR 4.0-7.0) vs 5.0(IQR 4.0-7.5) at 2 min, in the experimental and standard treatment groups, respectively (p = 0.9020). This article provides comprehensive recommendations for the systemic treatment of severe pediatric psoriasis based on evidence obtained from a systematic review of the literature and the consensus opinion of expert dermatologists and pediatricians. For each systemic treatment, the grade of recommendation (A, B, C) based on the treatment's approval by the European Medicines Agency for childhood psoriasis and the experts' opinions is discussed. The grade of recommendation for narrow-band-ultraviolet B phototherapy, cyclosporine, and retinoids is C, while that for methotrexate is C/B. The use of adalimumab, etanercept, and ustekinumab has a grade A recommendation. No conventional systemic treatments are approved for pediatric psoriasis. Adalimumab is approved by the European Medicines Agency as a first-line treatment for severe chronic plaque psoriasis in children (≥ 4 years old) and adolescents. Etanercept and ustekinumab are approved as second-line therapy in children ≥ 6 and ≥ 12 years, respectively.Conclusion: A treatment algorithm as well as practical tools (i.e., tabular summaries of differential diagnoses, treatment mechanism of actions, dosing regimens, control parameters) are provided to assist in therapeutic reasoning and decision-making for individual patients. Erythema nodosum (EN), although relatively uncommon in the pediatric population, is the most frequent type of panniculitis in children. The present study aimed to report all the cases of children admitted to our tertiary pediatric hospital with the diagnosis of EN to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, etiology, treatment, and the course of this disease in the pediatric age. This observational study retrospectively considered all children evaluated to the emergency room (ER) of Meyer Children's University Hospital, Florence, Italy, discharged with a diagnosis of EN over a 12-year period (from January 2009 to December 2021). Clinical and laboratory data were recorded using a standardized report form. Sixty-eight patients with EN were included. The etiologic diagnosis of EN was made in 38 children (55.9%): 29 (42.6%) had infection-related EN (in particular EBV and β-hemolytic streptococcus), 6 (8.8%) had Crohn's disease, 1 celiac disease, 1 Sjogren syndrome, and 1 Hodgkin lymphoma. In 30 patients (45%), no definitive diagnosis was reached, and they were defined as having idiopathic EN. Most of the laboratory tests were nonspecific. No statistical differences were found in the demographic and clinical data, and the main diagnostic laboratory parameters between patients with idiopathic EN versus those with secondary EN. Conclusion: Since EN can be isolated or the first manifestation of heterogeneous underlying pathologies, some of which can be severe and life-threatening, it is important to recognize it and carry out all the necessary etiological diagnostic investigations to understand its etiology and start the specific treatment. Adequate follow-up in celiac disease is important to improve dietary compliance and treat disease-related symptoms and possible complications. However, data on the follow-up of celiac children is scarce. We aimed to assess current pediatric celiac follow-up practices across Europe. Pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists from 35 countries in Europe, Israel, Turkey, and Russia completed an anonymous survey which comprised a 52-item questionnaire developed by the ESPGHAN Special Interest Group on Celiac Disease. A total of 911 physicians, the majority of whom exclusively worked in pediatric care (83%) and academic institutions (60%), completed the questionnaire. Mean age and mean experience with celiac care were 48.7 years (± 10.6) and 15.7 years (± 9.9), respectively. The vast majority (≥ 92%) always assessed anthropometry, dietary adherence, and tissue-transglutaminase IgA-antibodies at every visit, with the first visit being between 3 and 6 months after diagnosis. Other parameters (% always tested) were as follows: complete blood count (60%), iron status (48%), liver enzymes (42%), thyroid function (38%), and vitamin D (26%). Quality of life was never assessed by 35% of the responding physicians. Transition to adult care was mostly completed via a written transition report (37%) or no formal transition at all (27%). Conclusions: Follow-up of celiac children and adolescents in Europe may be improved, especially regarding a more rational use of (laboratory) tests, dietary and QoL assessment, and transition to adult care. Evidence-based advice from international scientific societies is needed. Late-preterm infants (LPT) are at increased risk for long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae and iron deficiency. The aim of the study is to assess the positive effect of iron supplementation on psychomotor development in healthy LPT. We designed a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind trial dividing the newborns into two groups. Every patient was assessed using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GMDS)-II edition at 12-month post-conceptional age. The study was performed at the Neonatology Unit of our Hospital, in Italy. Sixty-six healthy LPT infants born between 340⁄7 and 366⁄7 weeks of gestational age were enrolled in the study. One group received martial prophylaxis from the third week of life to 6 months of post-conceptional age (2 mg/kg/day of iron pidolate), the other received placebo. Fifty-two of the enrolled infants were assessed using the GMDS at 12-month of post-conceptional age. Statistical analysis of the mean scores of the Griffiths subscales was performed. There was a difference in the mean developmental quotient (DQ) (p < 0.01) between the two groups: iron group mean DQ 121.45 ± 10.53 vs placebo group mean DQ 113.25 ± 9.70. Moreover, mean scores of the Griffiths subscales A, B, and D showed significant differences between the two groups (scale A p < 0.05, scale B p < 0.02, scale D p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: We recommend that all LPT neonates receive iron supplementation during the first 6 months of life in order to improve their 1-year neurodevelopmental quotient. Kabuki syndrome (KS) is a well-recognized disorder characterized by postnatal growth deficiency, dysmorphic facial features, skeletal anomalies, and intellectual disability. The syndrome is caused by KMT2D gene mutations or less frequently KDM6A gene mutations or deletions. We report a systematic evaluation of KS patients from Campania region of Italy; data were also compared with literature ones. We collected data of 15 subjects (8 males and 7 females with age range 10-26 years; mean age 16.9 years) with confirmed diagnosis of KS, representing the entire cohort of patients from Campania Region. Each patient performed biochemical testing and instrumental investigation. Neuro-intellectual development, cranio-facial dysmorphisms, and multisystem involvement data were collected retrospectively. For each category, type of defects and frequency of the anomalies were analyzed. Our observation shows that KS patients from Campania region have some particular and previously underscored, neurological and immunological findings. We found high prevalence of EEG's abnormalities (43%) and MRI brain abnormalities (60%). Microcephaly resulted more common in our series (33%), if compared with major cohorts described in literature. Biochemical features of immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases including thyroid autoimmunity, polyserositis, and vitiligo were observed with high prevalence (54.5%). Low immunoglobulins levels were a frequent finding. Lymphocyte class investigation showed significantly reduced CD8 levels in one patient.Conclusions: These data confirm great heterogeneity of clinical manifestations in KS and suggest to introduce further clinical diagnostic criteria in order to perform a correct and precocious diagnosis. A new pediatric fixed combination of beclometasone dipropionate (BDP) 50 μg and formoterol fumarate (FF) 6 μg via pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) (CHF1535, Chiesi, Italy) was investigated. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study, a single CHF1535 administration using AeroChamber Plus™ spacer device (2 actuations, total dose BDP 100 μg/FF 12 μg) was compared to the same pMDI free combination in 56 asthmatic children aged ≥ 5 and < 12 years. Primary efficacy variable was forced expiratory volume during the first second (FEV1) area under the curve corrected by time over 12 h following morning dose (AUC0-12h). Further CHF1535 doses (50 μg/6 μg, 100 μg/12 μg, and 200 μg/24 μg) were also explored. Adverse events, electrocardiogram, and vital signs were monitored for safety. CHF1535 was non-inferior to free combination [adjusted mean difference (95% CI) 0.004 L (− 0.050, 0.041] with lower confidence limit greater than the limit set at 0.1 L. FEV1 AUC0-12h of each CHF1535 dose vs placebo were 0.037 L (p = 0.160), 0.119 L (p < 0.001), and 0.094 (p < 0.001) for 50/6, 100/12, and 200/24, respectively. No safety signals were found. Conclusion: CHF1535 was as effective as free combination BDP/FF, with a trend towards a dose-related response. All treatments were safe. Given COVID-19 pandemic periodic outpatient assessment of otitis-prone children regularly followed at our tertiary outpatient clinic of upper respiratory tract infections was discontinued since 9 March. In order to avoid leaving the patients to themselves just during the winter months, which are the most critical ones for these children, we kept in touch with the families of 102 children (mean age 41.4 ± 14.0 months) who had had a follow-up visit scheduled during the lockdown, and compensated with telemedicine assessment. This incidentally leads to the unexpected but not at all negative finding that a consistent clinical improvement had been occurred in most (82.3%) of children. A statistically significant reduction in the mean number of documented acute otitis media episodes, otorrhea episodes, and systemic antibiotic treatments during the February–April 2020 period compared with February–April 2019 was attested. Clinical evaluation performed in 27.4% cases revealed normal middle ear findings in all but three (89.3%) children. Conclusion: Our data document a global improvement of otitis-prone children in Milan during the Italian lockdown, as a fortuitous and incidental positive effect of the national lockdown. What is Know: • During COVID-19 pandemic in Italy any non-urgent medical activity including periodic outpatient assessment of otitis-prone children was discontinued. • Otitis-prone children experience acute infectious exacerbations mainly in winter. Detailed data on clinical presentations and outcomes of children with COVID-19 in Europe are still lacking. In this descriptive study, we report on 130 children with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosed by 28 centers (mostly hospitals), in 10 regions in Italy, during the first months of the pandemic. Among these, 67 (51.5%) had a relative with COVID-19 while 34 (26.2%) had comorbidities, with the most frequent being respiratory, cardiac, or neuromuscular chronic diseases. Overall, 98 (75.4%) had an asymptomatic or mild disease, 11 (8.5%) had moderate disease, 11 (8.5%) had a severe disease, and 9 (6.9%) had a critical presentation with infants below 6 months having significantly increased risk of critical disease severity (OR 5.6, 95% CI 1.3 to 29.1). Seventy-five (57.7%) children were hospitalized, 15 (11.5%) needed some respiratory support, and nine (6.9%) were treated in an intensive care unit. All recovered. Conclusion:This descriptive case series of children with COVID-19, mostly encompassing of cases enrolled at hospital level, suggest that COVID-19 may have a non-negligible rate of severe presentations in selected pediatric populations with a relatively high rates of comorbidities. More studies are needed to further understand the presentation and outcomes of children with COVID-19 in children with special needs. Complementary feeding practices are debated among pediatricians, primarily regarding whether nutritional needs or developmental readiness should be prioritized in recommendations for starting complementary feeding. The aim of the present study was to analyze the timing of the start of complementary feeding and the related motivations with an 8-item online survey administered to active members of the Italian Society of Primary Care Pediatricians. The participation rate was 43.3% (350 of 808), and 213 (60.9%) and 137 (39.1%) of the participants chose items related to developmental readiness and nutritional needs, respectively, as the criteria for starting complementary feeding. Approximately 74% of the participants reported that they recommended starting complementary feeding between 5 and 6 months of age, 17% recommended starting before 5 months, and 8% recommended starting after 6 months. Predefined schemes were proposed by 38% of the participants, and a responsive feeding modality was proposed by 13%, while the majority (49%) recommended both modalities depending on family characteristics. Regarding recommendations based on nutritional needs, 89% of pediatricians reported providing indications concerning the quantity of meat consumed during the first year of life, and 91% reported recommending introducing added salt only after 12 months of age. Compared with pediatricians who emphasized developmental readiness, those who prioritized nutritional needs suggested earlier complementary feeding start and a higher use of predefined schemes and were more likely to make recommendations regarding meat quantity and added salt (p < 0.0001).Conclusions: Pediatricians who used a developmental readiness criterion for starting complementary feeding may less frequently provide nutritional advice to parents, even if a trend to harmonize the different positions regarding complementary feeding start time is emerging.What is Known:• Pediatricians make suggestions for introducing complementary feeding based on scientific evidence, local traditions, and personal beliefs.• Either infants' nutritional needs or their developmental readiness currently is used as determinant for the timing of complementary feeding.What is New:• More than 60% of Italian pediatricians consider developmental readiness a priority for introducing complementary feeding.• Pediatricians following the criterion of developmental readiness may less frequently give detailed nutritional advice. Association between the use of infant formula and risks for infants' health is seldom studied in western countries. We set up a historical cohort based on record linkage analysis, combining the data from administrative databases providing individual data. Infants receiving the second dose of pediatric immunization between 2015 and 2017 were included. The main outcome measure was antibiotic prescriptions from enrolment up to 24 months of age, by infant feeding category at enrolment. The extended Cox regression technique was used to account for recurrent events. The infants' cohort included 40,258 5-month-old infants; during the study period, 60,932 antibiotic prescriptions were filled. Compared with infants fully breastfed, children fed with both maternal milk and formula received 106 more antibiotic prescriptions per 1000 children/year, whereas infants receiving formula only had 138 excess prescriptions per 1000 children/year. The association with infant feeding was statistically significant and remained unchanged after adjustment for common confounders (adjusted hazard ratio, HR, for complementary feeding vs full breastfeeding 1.09; 95%CI 1.05 to 1.12; formula only versus full breastfeeding adj. Measles outbreaks were recently reported in Europe due to low immunization rates. In this scenario, identifying the reasons of no vaccination is crucial to set up strategies to improve immunization rate. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the determinants of missed vaccination in children living in Southern Italy, during the 2016 outbreak. A standardized face-to-face questionnaire was used to record demographic data, immunization status, and reasons for missed vaccination. A total of 1141 children (median age 86 months, male 47.2%) was enrolled, 77.8% of the children were adequately vaccinated for age, 6.3% were incompletely vaccinated for age, and 15.9% did not receive any vaccine dose. Vaccination rate and reasons for not vaccinating significantly varied according to age, with children ≤ 24 months showing the lowest rate (67.8%). Reasons for not vaccinating included fear for side effects (51%), presence of underlying chronic conditions (12.2%), skip scheduled appointment (12.2%), refusal of vaccination (10.3%), acute illnesses (7.2%), and allergy to eggs (4.6%). The presence of underlying condition was a risk factor for inadequate immunization (p < 0.0001). Sleep-related disordered breathing (SDB) is very common in paediatric patients affected by Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). However, data addressing SBD patterns and their management are lacking. The aim of the present study was to analyse SDB features in 14 PWS patients (age range, 8 months-17 years). Polygraphic registration (PG) during a 12-h nocturnal sleep was performed in all patients. Obstructive and central apnoea indices and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded along with demographic and clinical data. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) was diagnosed in 13/14 patients (92.9%); the mean obstructive apnoea-hypopnea index (OAHI) was 7.6 ± 4.2 events/h with a mean central apnoea index (CAI) of 0.7 ± 1.04 events/h. Time spent with SpO2 < 90% was of 0.02% [range 0-23%], with a mean oxygen desaturation index of 12.1 ± 6.9 events/h. No correlation was found between OAHI and body mass index (mean BMI 28 ± 9.8 kg/m2 and BMI z-score 2.7 ± 1.7).Conclusion: OSA was the predominant sleep-related disorder in our PWS patients, not associated with age or obesity, and appeared more severe than previously reported. Further studies addressing the underlying mechanisms are necessary in larger study populations to better design the most appropriate clinical approach. Unlabelled: A sharp uptrend in emergency department (ED) visits for injuries associated with inflatable bouncers (IBs) has been observed recently. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology and features of injuries resulting from the use of IBs at an Italian pediatric ED. We collected data of 521 children from GIPSE (regional software for management of admission at ED) in the period of 2002-2013. The injuries were slightly more frequent in males than females (52.4 vs 47.6 %). Preschooler children were the most commonly injured (45.7 %). The occurrence of injuries increased by year (eight cases in 2002 and 90 cases in 2013), and a seasonal variability was reported (207 cases in the period of April-June). The most common body region injured was the upper extremity (52.4 %). Children with fractures were 126 times more likely to have injured the upper extremity rather than other body regions compared with patients with no fracture (p < 0.05). Humerus and radius/ulna fractures occurred most commonly in preschooler children (p < 0.05). Fractures were 43 times more likely to be hospitalized than children with no fracture (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Injuries associated with IBs increased over time. Preschooler children were most injured, and this means there is insufficient adherence to existing recommendations concerning an age limit.What Is Known: • Along with the skyrocketing popularity of IBs among children, the number of children presenting to ED with injuries from these plays has also been increasing at an alarming rate; • The European literature about this phenomenon is scarce and no specific legislations exist for safety of these devises in European Union (EU). Unlabelled: Despite the severity of HUS and the fact that it represents a leading cause of acute kidney injury in children, the general epidemiology of HUS is all but well documented. The present study provides updated, population-based, purely epidemiological information on HUS in childhood from a large and densely populated area of northern Italy (9.6 million inhabitants, 1.6 million children). We systematically reviewed the files concerning patients with STEC-HUS and atypical HUS (aHUS) over a 10-year observation period (January 2003-December 2012). We included all incident cases with a documented first episode of HUS before the age of 18 years. We identified 101 cases of HUS during the 10 years. The overall mean annual incidence was 6.3 cases/million children aged <18 years (range 1.9-11.9), and 15.7/million of age-related population (MARP) among subjects aged <5 years; aHUS accounted for 11.9 % of the cases (mean incidence 0.75/MARP). Unlabelled: The aim of our study was to examine the association between problematic cell phone use (PCPU) for text messaging and substance abuse in young adolescents. This cross-sectional study was conducted on the basis of an ad hoc questionnaire, during the 2014-2015 school year in a province of the Veneto Region (Italy); it involved a sample of 1156 students in grades 6 to 8 (11 to 13 years old). A self-report scale based on the Short Message Service (SMS) Problem Use Diagnostic Questionnaire (SMS-PUDQ) was administered to assess the sample's PCPU. A multivariate logistic regression model was applied to seek associations between PCPU (as the dependent variable) and independent variables. The proportion of students who reported a PCPU increased with age in girls (13.5% in 6th grade, 16.4% in 7th grade, and 19.5% in 8th grade), but not in boys (14.3% in 6th grade, 18.0% in 7th grade, and 14.8% in 8th grade). Logistic regression showed that drunkenness at least once and energy drink consumption raised the odds of PCPU, whereas reading books, higher average school marks, and longer hours of sleep were associated with lower odds of PCPU in early adolescence.Conclusion: our findings confirm a widespread PCPU for text messaging among early adolescents. Several authors report MS affecting not only young adults but also children and adolescents. Sardinia is one of the regions at the highest risk for MS worldwide in the adult population; to date, no definite data exist on the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of pediatric MS (pMS) in northern Sardinia. Patients with diagnosis of optic neuritis, myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), demyelinating disorders, MS, or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) according to McDonald criteria were enrolled, when disease onset occurred within the range of 0-18 years. From January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2012, 21 cases of pMS and 5 cases of CIS were found in northern Sardinia. The annual mean pMS incidence was 2.85 cases per 100,000 pediatric population, and the annual mean CIS incidence was 0.68 cases per 100,000 pediatric population. The pMS and CIS prevalence computed on 31 December 2012 was 26.92 and 6.41 per 100,000 pediatric population, respectively.Conclusion: Our pMS data among Sardinians corroborate the epidemiological scenario described in the adult population being the incidence estimates significantly higher than those reported elsewhere.What Is Known: Sardinia is one of the regions at the highest risk for MS worldwide in the adult population. Unlabelled: Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disorder induced by a trigger factor in genetically susceptible individuals. There is emerging evidence about the impact of the month of birth on the development of several autoimmune diseases. Our aim was to investigate whether, in Italian CD children, the season of birth is associated with development of CD later in life. We report a survey conducted at two Italian referral centers for CD in Rome and Bari. The CD database was created to enable retrospective examination of the data of all the consecutive patients, born between 2003 and 2010, who had received a diagnosis of CD. This CD patient group comprising 596 children was compared with a reference group that included all subjects born in the same period and in the same cities (439,990 controls). Overall, there was a summer birth preponderance in CD patients compared to controls (28.2 % of CD patients vs 23.0 % of the control population; OR 1.315; 95 % CI 1.100 to 1.572). Stratifying the caseload by gender and age, the summer birth preponderance was maintained for females (28.6 % CD females vs 22.6 % control females; OR 1.368; 95 % CI 1.069 to 1.750).Conclusions: our survey confirms that in Italy, children born in summer are at higher risk to develop CD than subjects born in other seasons.
